Hi I’m Kevin from Indianapolis, IN. I teach biology and Earth/Space Science. I also serve as an eCoach @LCHSBears. Hope some of my friends from #EDpiper, #NVedchat, & #INeLearn come in tonight #IDedchat
It happens to us all! Last week I posted a Q without the hashtag and couldn't figure out why folks weren't responding. LOL! #IDedchat I quickly fixed my error.
I think it could be done at all levels. Ele ed has a pretty good grasp on this already (from my limited experience) but def needs to be done at secondary level #IDedchat
I would love to see more cross curricular problem based units. I think they lend themselves to real world connections rather than teaching content in silos. #IDedchat
R1: what if students signed up for the project they want to complete for the year instead of courses they want to take. The curriculum they learn through the project teaches them the content they are expected to learn. #idedchat
Between simple polling, interviews, meeting with their grade level principals. Anything that would allow all members to feel like they had a voice in the matter. Maybe even look at research #idedchat
Add community service, #PBL, cross curricular learning, authentic audience, etc. documented using tech, and 4Cs are reinforced. Brings in now and future ready skills. #IDedchat
A2: Anything that would aim to “replace” the teacher. No matter how good technology is/becomes, education will ultimately be a human enterprise, based on relationships. Anything that overlooks that would be a mistake. #IDedchat
#idedchat A1: Getting all teachers on the same page in terms of a shared vision for the students. Touching base and understanding teachers is very important to buy in their commitment for the students. Happy staff, happy school, happy students!
My thought is that we increase the adults that are interacting with Ss. Could be the facilitators of the project and members/stakeholders in the community. #IDedchat
School is not like any other place. When was the last time you had to take a multiple choice test to solve a problem at work? Or help your community? So that’s what I mean. Learning activities would look like the real world.
A2: Teaching content or posing questions that can be Googled. I want students learning how to ask questions that don't have a single answer... #IDedchat
Volume and/or quality interactions, right? While it takes a village, it often just requires one caring adult to make a huge difference in the life of a student. #IDedchat
R3: no passing periods, no grade level restrictions, Ss can come and go as they need. More of an flexible campus setup with office hours for Ss to get extra help and guidance if needed. #idedchat
This idea always makes me think of open concept schools of the 80's.. I have never seen so many bookshelves and file cabinets today in schools designed that way.. We always come back around to good ideas. #idedchat
A3 Ss with mobile education in their hip pocket w/Teacher in a creative space like maker, forest, artist residency etc https://t.co/anSClVoFi6#idedchat
A3: Buzzing...students in collaborative groups...spots for quite reflection...multiple "projects" going at once....teacher as learner consulting other learners on their journey. #IDedchat
Q4: I like that @Dale_Chu mentioned that he wouldn't want anything present in his new school that "replaces" a teacher. What role would technology play in your "reinvented" school? #IDedchat
I really like that, Kevin. Your insight also implies a shared responsibility for student success. DeAndre isn't MY student because he's in my class, but he's OUR student because he's in our school. #IDedchat
A4: It would certainly be a TOOL, but by no means a replacement. Teachers still need to be physically in the classroom. Technology just helps make deeper connections and allows for great collaboration. #idedchat
What?! Students writing on walls? What if instead of having purchased or pintrest decorations, Students write/draw/sketch on the walls to create their own anchor charts? :-) #IDedchat
Q4 #IDedchat I believe strongly in tools. The tech we have today is amazing & these tools should be used to empower our students. AI and machine learning are moving fast. Let’s take advantage of opportunities for personalized learning. It’s not a question of replacement.
#idedchat A2: Forcing every teacher to dish out the same instructions and materials to every class. Providing a common base of materials as reference is one thing, but there must be flexibility of choice, as long as it comes with justification and accountability
A4: There could be a lot of variety here (e.g. personalized learning), but it should be an enhancer. I imagine technology empowering student voice and choice while allowing teachers to spend more time as a guide/facilitator. #IDedchat
R4: being realistic..do our kids want to be at our schools? Do they truly enjoy our delivery or the use of tech in its current means? Do they feel like they are getting a lot out of what we are doing with them? #idedchat
A4: Use technology as a tool (considering the learning objectives first) AND use it to break down the walls of the classroom and bring the world in! #IDedchat
I agree, even as one of the 1st MOOC dev'r Teachers are in my paradigm. w/ mobile education MOOC on a smartphone, Teacher in a Creative Space doing PBL @ 50% learning retention Dynamite #idedchat
I still want lots of technology, but along with it I would want Ts who reinvent the way they assess understanding and how they use technology. No more digital worksheets and phone bans because they can give you the answers. I see Ss using tech as a production tool #IDedchat
Q4: I like that @Dale_Chu mentioned that he wouldn't want anything present in his new school that "replaces" a teacher. What role would technology play in your "reinvented" school? #IDedchat
A3 better yet connect to a Columbian Class or Alabama in mystery skype made a list of $k Teachers avail times and subjects https://t.co/jrQWpR9VBu#idedchat
R5: I think my ideas could be multiple grade levels and ability levels. I can’t get over how @khanacademy has videos to learn anything. What if we have classrooms where you can learn ANYTHING ANYTIME Any AGE? #idedchat
A5: Instead of having "grade levels" what if students could "level up" based upon mastery through their projects. I know that there are many "mastery based" and Game based thought leaders out there. #IDedchat
A5: If we truly believe that every child learns at his/her own pace, then I’m not sure we’d organize our schools by grade levels. Rather than time being the constant and learning being the variable, we should aspire to flip the paradigm. #IDedchat
Exactly. I'm actually trying to find an angle to work it into a class and have it be part of the curriculum. Just haven't found the right angle yet #idedchat
A5: I am not sure how it would work, but I see flexible grade levels. Ss go where they need to go for a particular set of learning objectives. If that makes sense. #IDedchat
Our leadership team is looking for an accountability/grade check form that Ss check their grades, fill the form out, and it will e-mail the results to parents keeping them informed. Replacing progress reports and shows missing assignments. #idedchat
This is an area in which our current system needs to find a way to get better. We even have technologies in place to help the process...but there are still major gaps. #IDedchat
Our leadership team is trying to put the ownership on the Ss to keep them aware of their grades and yet keep parents informed at the same time. #idedchat
A5 what if we rely on Badges like the Scouts and we have no grades just pure PBL? It worked for Edison & Einstein<- I just throw their endorsements in I'm sure I wont hear from them #idedchat
And this is why chats like #IDedchat are important to me. I gain new insight every week. Thanks for the forum @averyteach! Thanks to all of you who contributed tonight and all the other nights.
I run my MOOC, so yes I can reinvent it... haha I will come and free all my fellow teachers that would like to work with curious students not just k-6 but from 7 on... yes they will be fighting to sit in the front #idedchat
