I know it has been another very tough weekend for many, and yet, tonight, I wanted to seek to #empower each of you with thinking about #mindfulness and the possibility of using some ideas and techniques with yourself and or your children or students. #resiliencechat

@saratruebridge is not here tonight, yet, as your guide for the eve we will be examining #mindfulness. I’ll pose some questions, nd you answer, and add comments, and be sure to add #resiliencechat to all your #resiliencechat posts so all can follow.

A1: Mindful behaviors help educators recognize and embrace diverse learners with diverse needs, and also helps students exercise these behaviors as needed. #resiliencechat
Do you think that as teacher’s learn about #mindfulness they themselves can become more centered, or that the practices allow them to become more aware of their student’s interests or issues? Just wondering. #Resiliencechat
Could you share a little more on this. Why might it be important to become #aware of their student’s interests, issues, concerns, goals? #Resiliencechat
A1: #Resiliencechat It makes a huge impact. Teachers are setting the example and by practicing mindfulness, students are going to learn from you. Be patient, Be in the moment, appreciate, breath...students will follow.
A1 I have talked about the fact that my first grade teacher complained about the fact that her birthday was the same as Pearl Harbor Day. #resiliencechat

Well, there is that! Love how you tell it like it was Deb! Yes, we are working very hard to assist our educators with seeking to expand perspective, compassion, and to connect with students from all backgrounds. #Resiliencechat
A1: They will be calmer and more patient. They will model these traits in times of stress & show kids how to respond appropriately to upsetting events. #resiliencechat

A2: The brain state of the teacher sets the climate for the entire class. If the teacher is stressed, the entire class will pick up on this stress and likely feel more stressed. If the teacher is calm, the class is more likely to feel more calm. #resiliencechat
A2: They would be better equipped to handle the students in their charge, many of whom have needs that go beyond academics. Also helps teachers do their jobs at the highest level by addressing their individual needs. #resiliencechat
(Joining late) A2 #resiliencechat Happy, balanced, well-cared for and respected Ts are just overall best for kids. Healthy well-being = healthy for kids to learn from.
I frequently speak to leaders about this very trait.
“Calm builds confidence, confidence builds courage, courage leads to change that builds true culture shifts.”
Martinez, 2018

A2: Right on @JacobFFSUSD...teachers need to be in a good place and mindset in order to do their jobs effectively. Unfortunately, negativity is still in schools. #resiliencechat
Our school @IPSWallace107 has implemented mindfulness building wide. From morning meetings to 2 90 second mindful moments each day over the PA. Total culture change for staff and students! #bethechange#resiliencechat
A2: Teachers would have peace & be able to be focused educators. Without all the stress, they could get through so much more with the kids. #resiliencechat
#resiliencechat
Q3:
Now, let’s take it one more step - some are already there - How do students become more #empowered by us improving the skills of our educators?
A1: Mindfulness practices work on fostering self-awareness as to what’s happening within you so you can positively respond to what’s happening around you. It’s important to model self-compassion & effective self-regulation techniques as part of a healthy lifestyle #resiliencechat

A2: Improving teachers' overall well-being helps them to be more focused on their day with their students. Many students have much more going on at home, and could really benefit from a teacher that is stress-free and excited to teach her students. #resiliencechat
Woah over the PA? That's cool! How has the whole staff responded? Do they like it and are feeling the benefits? Or is there some resistance? #resiliencechat
Welcome Will. #Resiliencechat
We often hear of teachers leaving because of the stress, and high demand, yet, we are working to build places of support where they can thrive, and we hope they will stay in the profession longer.
A2: Self-care is essential. A dysregulated adult cannot regulate a child! Just like in a plane... We must put our oxygen masks on first to truly help our students with their oxygen masks! #TraumaInformed#Selfcare#Mindfulness#resiliencechat
#resiliencechat
Q3:
Now, let’s take it one more step - some are already there - How do students become more #empowered by us improving the skills of our educators?
A3 When I was in 5th grade, my teacher told us to bring brushes and a smock and paints because we were going to paint. Well, I forgot to tell my mom and so I came without. She punished me instead. I had to spend the time watcfhing others paint. #resiliencechat
A3: This is a focus at our school and the student growth is amazing. We are teaching them skills to succeed in life. The road isn't easy, but the progress is undeniable...and I love the relationships I build along the way! #resiliencechat
They love it! Most turn out the lights and use the 90 seconds for calm and peace. If Ss move Ts have been directed to ignore however most students love it. We have used the same song for 2 years. As soon as kids hear it their bodies relax #resiliencechat
#resiliencechat Q4
Okay, #Mindfulness = Great Strategy
#Skilled#Educators = Great Strategy
Focus on improving Teacher - Student Relationship = Priceless!
Thoughts? What are the gains?

A4: The Students will remember more on what they learn because they have a strong connection with the Teacher and are able to connect well with him/her. #resiliencechat
We are using Second Steps Curriculum for Social/Emotional Learning. The morning meetings (morning meeting book) and the mindfulness moment came ideas from our PBIS team last year. Very powerful! #resiliencechat
A3) The teacher on the edge doesn’t have the patience to do much beyond automatation. Anything else opens the door to that final, back-breaking straw. The centered teacher is able to engage the student on their terms. Students can tell the difference at the start. #Resiliencechat
A3: What teacher models, students will pick up.Using my classroom as an example... when my students learned how to solve social conflict by just talking through it, they didn’t need me to solve it anymore. And their arguing lessened- they were happier & empowered. #resiliencechat
A4: When Ss have relationships, they feel safe in the classroom. They are more likely to open up with staff and also try new things and fail. They will work through these failures and challenges and make gains socially/emotionally/academically. #resiliencechat

A3: When social emotional skills, mindfulness & academics are taught together, the greatest impact on academic learning happens. Students are more creative, more responsive, & increase their ability to retain and what they have learned when they are calm & relaxed #Resiliencechat

Q3:
Now, let’s take it one more step - some are already there - How do students become more #empowered by us improving the skills of our educators?
A4) Self-confidence. Comfort with the thinking process, and less focus on answer-getting. Academic discourse. All the things that make being a student fun and being a teacher fun! #Resiliencechat
Everyone is simply #onfire tonight!
Ring the alarm bells, and pass out the prizes!
I am so fortunate to have this amazing #resiliencechat group with us tonight!
A4 #resiliencechat Relationships are the foundation of meaningful instruction. Kids learn from people who care about them. The gains potentially include lifelong independence, resilience, and success in life.

A3: Adults with confidence in their craft and tools to regulate themselves freely give the class culture authority over their community. Once that community is formed it becomes “we” thus empowering students voice and overall class culture #resiliencechat

Q3:
Now, let’s take it one more step - some are already there - How do students become more #empowered by us improving the skills of our educators?
A4: #resiliencechat Life long memories and lessons that stick with you. Relationships, #resilience and climate are everything in creating/being in an environment. It's got to be positive. The potential impact is endless.

Good night, folks. Going to work really hard at being resilient. Hopefully I won't really have to wait three weeks before I start chemo. Time is of the essence. #resiliencechat
Being a counselor I have the opportunity to play it in my office from my phone and we relax/meditate together. I role model for them! However, I have used it in the hallway or cafeteria just playing it while walking around and kids start to calm and regulate! #resiliencechat
