A1 Guide Ss to fact check & investigate other opinions of what they find on social media so they are informed & indpt thinkers
-
A1 by directing Ss to obviously gasified info to make a point?
-
-
-
A1. First step is to realize that Ss aren't competent consumers just because they consume a lot of Internet.
-
explain to them that not everything they see online is true and that they need to read from many different sources-
-
A1. Step 2 is probably connected to talking with Ss about their experiences online. To often we forget to ask.
-
-before deciding that sth is true or not.
-
A1 Train Ss to develop critical thinking skills, research methods from multiple sources & ALWAYS consider the source!
-
I agree. We also need to teach Ss the difference between critical think in a traditional fashion and online.
-
the chn weren't best pleased when they realised they'd been fooled. But made them research

-
Q2 coming up in a moment!
-
-
a1 we are struggling with this in our district and are looking at digital citizenship based programs
-
I am sure if we share case studies for discussion will get them think harder.
-
-
A1. Encouraging them to prioritize the content quality instead of quantity-based trends.
-
Over here, we think the solution needs to draw us back to What is our value-system..
-
A2 Social media has great potential for global education and increasing awareness, relationships, connection, empathy, and action
-
-
A1: Allow it to offer Ss a different view from their own, i.e. follow content Twitter feeds from global sources
-
So true. Social Media can empower the process of students exploring the World.
-
Why are people more vocal online at face-to-face?
-
they were "real" but they were openly falsified if u looked hard enough the disclaimer was there
-
A1 In exactly the same way as one would check printed matter - whether it is a newspaper, book, magazine, journal etc...
-
by using it mainly as a way of communication/interaction as well as a way of sharing info related or not to their lesson
-
A2)Ss connecting with other Ss around the world opens them up to care about social issues. They need to want it on their own
-
-
Such a great ?! I am going to pose it to my 9th graders tomorrow and see what they say.
-
A1 Ss question and filter when we show them that they (or anyone) can be authors of social media and encourage their discussions
-
A2 By dialogue and using social media as the thread to link discussions.
-
Love to hear what they share
-
-
Late to the chat! A2 - Social Media is great for updated ways to create empathy by looking at multiple views.
-
A2 Polarization occurs when we stop relating to eachother. Solutions lie in direct communication. https://t.co/2AHZ3z4de8
-
A2: Work collaboratively on developing social media spaces that address problems by creating solutions.
-
completely agree! It builds "emotional equity" in them
-
-
-
-
absolutely! Their curiosity should be embraced!
-
-
A2 and hopefully these solutions are not left in the ether but acted upon
-
We encourage kids to use social media to spread positive messages to change the way people think about social media.
-
A3: We encourage by being teachers and modeling the behavior ourselves
-
how about ask them? Listen. Learn what they think and why. Help expand perspectives.
-
I believe its simply by identifying similarities & embracing differences which instantly breaks down preconceived ideas
-
A3: Must teach empathy along w/ critical thinking. When Ss can empathize w/ each other, much more likely to be thoughtful
-
A3 rising awareness of local causes thru social media then volunteering as part of performing civic duty
-
a lesson many forget but its the groundwork of education
-
A3 I agree Ts we need to model for our Ss. Also show Ss to look beyond getting "likes" by showing real influential role models.
-
A3) Honestly it is about getting parents/adults involved and showing them how their behavior on social media affects their Ss
-
A3 Teaching critical thinking and empathy in the classroom & at home will translate into positive digital citizenship.
-
A2 like all human activity social media can have a negative side so need to play towards its positives
-
the dreaded "like" currency is a killer
-
A3 agree to this move away from a tick box culture and perform some thing that is real
-
A3: teaching them that learning is a communal experience and asking them to contribute to for social good and growth as a class
-
TED_ED: Q2 coming up in a moment!
-
TED_ED: Q2 How can teachers and students use social media as a solution to societal issues?
https://t.co/dO9lfdGHF4 …
-
-
-
it is the WORST! I wish I knew how to solve this problem.
-
very important lesson to highlight the communal experience both locally and globally
-
A3 Good question. Train Ss on cultural compassion online & off. Learn by reading & listening
https://t.co/3QCJA7WzN7
-
now I feel guilty liking this comment, but couldn't agree more!
-
A2 Social media is the art, have Ss experiment with the medium based on their direction: awareness, support, humor, learning
-
A3 Show Ss how long form essays have greater value & reader loyalty than "bandwagon jumpers"
https://t.co/QGc9bM0SYs
-
and their parents & wider community + for older Ss stakeholders like employers & universities
-
-
Yes, thank you. Thinking Globally deepens and gives meaning to use of Social media
-

-
Q4 How can we teach students to use social media as a conscious discussion space for growth and learning? https://t.co/r8YWdmcJrR
-
suggest online platforms that will help them gain knowledge,on twitter/blogs or even instagram! Knowledge is everywhere!
-
A4: I actually think students could teach us grow ups a thing or two about that
-
A4: Model it. Show them our own discussions from and other social media-based PD.
-
A4) Ss need to see consequences for using it the wrong way. Schools are still struggling as to what this looks like exactly
-
model. Pull up +ve and -ve examples from social media platforms. Have them determine differences in approaches.
-
A4 Its important to start w/ "mock" social media platform before letting Ss online. Digital Citizenship is a privilege, not right
-
A4 lead them to the water and then allow them to drink
-
-
A4 Adults need be proper examples for students to follow, modeling good digital citizenship. https://t.co/qBuIbzma7u
-
society is too fixated on "empty" social news-there needs to be a shift in how that content is glorified over informative
-
A4 Teach Ss how to debate & present info face-to-face FIRST then before online discussion.

-
Q4 How can we teach students to use social media as a conscious discussion space for growth and learning? https://t.co/r8YWdmcJrR

-
Good Q for UK Ss what do other EU countries think about the UK being in the EU
-
A4 Train Ss on effective communication written & orally to be more effective online.

-
Q4 How can we teach students to use social media as a conscious discussion space for growth and learning? https://t.co/r8YWdmcJrR
-
Yes true but at that point they use social media personally. We should give them a fresh start w/ a class identity.
-
TED_ED: Wrapping up Q3, on to Q4
-
TED_ED: Q4 How can we teach students to use social media as a conscious discussion space for growth and learning? …
-
Model building a learning community & invite kids. Kids need adults guiding them through social media. Parents need edu.
-
-
really great idea. Turn their gossip Twitters into something good..for a class. Maybe even a grade. thanks!
-
excellent idea + be great to find out what they feel are +ve & -ve
-
Distinguish btw function and form to encourge appreciation for substance and expression https://t.co/ASFYA3ahNc

society is too fixated on "empty" social news-there needs to be a shift in how that content is glorified over informative
-
yes! Just pull up examples and have them figure it out. Just ask them to categorize and why.
