#BadgeChatK12 Archive
#BadgeChatK12 was founded in December, 2014 by a group of educators who are passionate about credentialing learning and achieving. While there are thousands of us around the globe issuing badges to learners, there was not yet a regular twitter chat for those of us in the K-12 space to gather for learning and sharing about badging. After reaching out to leaders in the field (like the good folks at Mozilla and The Badge Alliance) for their thoughts, #BadgeChatK12 was born.

Faith based schools: Challenging assumptions and presuppositions that prevent primary and higher.
congrats Tom! That's a great reflection!!!
For the next 30 min my tweets will be dedicated to Join or lurk! Topic: Messaging a Digital Badge Initiative
Hope to be around. Putting final touches to CanvasCon prez: TeachEatTakeAway for informal CPD (using Badgr & Canvas)
We want to hear your thoughts on messaging a Digital Badge initiative. Plz include in your tweets
Welcome to ! Let’s get to know each other. What do you teach? Where are you? Do you use badges or just curious?
Tom from So Cal. Excited to launch a pilot program at my school next year.
Even if you're not part of a Badge initiative, you've been part of *a* initiative so you have valuable thoughts to contribute!
I'm in CA - teach French. Curious and interested!
Welcome! Be sure to connect w Tom! Also, in NC has great language teacher Badge resources
Demian from Santa Barbara. Looking forward to piloting badges next year in K-6.
Hola Demian! So excited for you and your students...looking fwd to hearing about your messaging tonight!
A1. I think we need to start with principals and superintendents to help promote legislation.
Hi ! Sarah here dropping by to say hello and to wish everyone a great chat!
Alright, let's get into those questions...
Q1: Who are the stakeholders to include in messaging a Badge initiative?
kelly from Tahoe dropping in! EdTech & Curriculum Coordinator.
A1: The is where I'd start, followed by the twitter community, and of course !
So the decision makers are important to include early. What kinds of policies would u hope they'd push?
A1: I'd start with Ss, parents, district, teachers whoever will be seeing badges
A1: Since I do mostly PD I need to get my Ts & admin on board more to make this initiative grow!
So glad you mentioned PARENTS. We're foolish for them to be the last to know about new initiatives!
A1. Teachers and students are the key stakeholders for us to start. Need to develop the “why” before the “how.”
i'd add earning badges too as that is so important for buy-in.
Great point: include others in your messaging so your work isn't in a silo! https://t.co/fFIP8eTYRI
A1: The is where I'd start, followed by the twitter community, and of course !
We have a badge design contest going on right now for our first badge. St. input is key.
A1: Those getting the (Ss, Ts), those issuing (Ts, Admin), and the community (business/industry partners)
So part of your ss' answer to "why?" is bc they themselves designed?
Hardly. Work draws heavily on fantastic CSS script & designs that amazing kindly lent me. All trial&error!
that's an awesome idea! Love it!
Haha, guess I'm coming at this from a different approach than most K12 teachers re: consortium!
A1: Including the intended audience in messaging also important: College admissions, Dept of Ed, HR
but it's a point well taken. We need to go outside of our edu box!
Question 2 coming at you!
Q2: What are some important messages to share regarding a Badge initiative?
Hoping a design made by or picked by sts will be motivational. Right from the get go, I hope that they’ll “want” to earn it
Q2: What it means and what it's worth-- if it stands for a cert. or something then stakeholders need to buy in before.
a2: the purpose of the badge and why evidence of learning is vital.
Hi all. Teach IT/physics in British international school in Netherlands. Main role supporting elearning. Badges for staff CPD
hashtag assist! This is too good to miss! https://t.co/4fh85S3i1g
A2. Badges show PROOF of what students can do and give them an edge in the work force.
Almost sounds like predicting the FAQs and getting those out to stakeholders early
I know just nodded his head:) https://t.co/NppzAYdpkm
a2: the purpose of the badge and why evidence of learning is vital.
A2: exactly the proof, purpose and criteria are key
i've learned SO much from Ben and you, Noah! love my PLN!
A2: Sadly, proactively anticipating critics' issues and having those responses ready
A1: In my staff CPD badge trial the key buy-in is SMT for support & mandate. Regular engagement/feedback of learners critical
Q2: Badge needs to ultimately remind earner/learner of that they “know” and are able to do, not an object to acquire.
I think anticipating why someone will say no and having a response is key for getting naysayers on board!
A2: Address student privacy, informed consent, COPPA compliance. Those questions WILL arise
Big smiles over here! I don't even need to answer Q2 now!
i've found it funny how many peeps are negative abt badges yet have fitbits! They're earning digital badges.
Sorry - Senior Management Team What is K12 equivalent?
For staff, I think that "response" is often a question...allow them to speak to root cause of real issues
Great convos...keep 'em going while we push to question 3!
Q3: What might be effective media to use when messaging a Badge initiative?
So bummed to not be able to make badge summit this year
Would like some badge providers to develop more gamification elements too (if used with a VLE)
Yes you are! To rub it in: One of the creators of Oregon Trail is speaking at Badge Summit!
Q3. Social media. Local public access TV. Local TV news.
oops https://t.co/lAM7aNVOLP
A3: I was thinking let Ss take the lead to advertise to start. They're the best at spreading the word!
A3: The TVs in our lobbies and cafeterias! Such great, underutilized channels to promote what's good in schools!
i'm missing it too. :( Hope to make it next year!
A3: Marquee outside of school
A3: APS had their print services make laminated color posters for any school that requested
Pushing out 2 quick questions in final 5 minutes...
Q4: Can you share examples/lessons of successful (or unsuccessful) messaging w Badging?
Q5: What are your takeaways from this week’s chat?
A4. I created a formal PowerPoint with resources to our admin and that's how I got the pilot approved
A5: Laying ground work is key; go slow to go fast; involve all stakeholders.
Awesome! Hope you'll share the link with our chat! https://t.co/eJD52M8Xna
A4. I created a formal PowerPoint with resources to our admin and that's how I got the pilot approved
Agree! Feel fortunate that in APS it hasn't been a mandate, all opt in so momentum is REAL
A5: Agreed. My head spins thinking about doing something schoolwide or districtwide to start https://t.co/pRNVLklM74
A5: Laying ground work is key; go slow to go fast; involve all stakeholders.
A5: As soon as we think we've included all the stakeholders, it's a good sign we've forgotten someone
A5: we're starting an Adult Ed program this fall w/ badges. Can't wait to try it out w/ a website & bells & whistles! ;)
Huge shoutout to for our topic and questions tonight! If you don't her, you should (eg >100,000 Badges issued)
A3 Interesting work in UK at Yr7-9 (6-8 in K12?) on assessment without levels using Learning Mastery https://t.co/M00NnqxtH7
Let us know how it all goes.
