Hi #scitlap crew! Introduce yourself and share what helps you learn and retain information the best.
Tonight we are highlighting learning strategies by the Learning Scientist. Here is their website for your reference.

Hi Scott, thanks for joining us! Concrete examples work well for me as well. I like them best when I can make them a bit ridiculous to aid the memory. #scitlap
First strategy: Spaced Practice
Space out your study over time - plan ahead to avoid cramming.
How can we encourage this in an engaging way? What would make practice more enoyable? #scitlaphttps://t.co/R5ctdjc5kz
Spaced Practice. I've started using @quizizz and Ss love it. They can take the quiz over and over and over. On different days too for spaced practice. #scitlap

Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species or Did King Philip come over for good spaghetti?
Ironically this is now wiped from the MA science curriculum. #scitlap
I was just reading about this in new #eduprotocols but I heard Jon talk too. I have been giving Ss time daily a variety of ways Quia, Quizlet, Quizizz & Flashcards to study sci vocab prefixes & suffixes assessment scores improved #scitlap
Retrieval Practice.
Students bringing information to mind - main ideas, similarites, differences without notes or hints. NO GRADES ATTACHED!
What are some ways you have done (or could do) this in your class? Keeping it engaging of course.#scitlaphttps://t.co/b1oxkHxlL9
@PerkyScience I'm so excited for this topic. I recently discovered the Learning Scientists through @ditchpod and recently included the link on my study skills section on my unit outline. #scitlap
RP: The bell-ringer/ warm-up I do (w/ @plickers ) is often from the previous two years of science. Gives us a chance to talk and discuss the topic as needed. #scitlap
Retrieval: Graphic organizers. LOVE Venn diagrams for teaching and for form assessment. BTW, Remember the old "Inspiration" software for mind maps??? (note, these are 2 unrelated thoughts) #scitlap
If you want to go deeper into retrieval practice @PoojaAgarwal has a site https://t.co/LPlzerHoPk and a downloadable guide to help you implement it in multiple ways. It is a great resource #scitlap
Elaboration:
Concepts and ideas are explained and described ideas with rich details. Including how things work and why. Connect with different ideas, how different ideas work together and apply to your life.
How can this be a part of our classes? #scitlaphttps://t.co/0wLiqapvll
My challenge with this practice is the kids think it is okay to "help" each other since it isn't for a grade. :( Kind of defeats the whole practice scene for those who need it the most. #scitlap
I really like this practice for tying in previous units to what we are covering now. Too often science units become siloed for kids. I think we can use elaboration to make meaningful connections. #scitlap
OK, I looked briefly at "elaboration" and it reminds me of MY study guides that I provide prior to a test...except THEY MAKE THEIR OWN. Golden! #scitlap
My @AmplifyScience unit have really helped me w/ Elaborate with video clip of professionals then running Sims & generating data then modeling knowledge to date in a variety of ways as well as adding pair share activity/ discussion cards. #scitlap
Okay, you had me at "THEY MAKE THEIR OWN" What kind of support would they need? Could it be peer checked? What can we do to support this? Or what do you already do? #scitlap
Interleaving:
Make sure you understand the idea, then swtich to something different. Study the ideas in different orders.
How can we add this practice to our classroom. How can we encourage our Ss to do this? #scitlaphttps://t.co/Vve1Off4YX
I think it is a work for many, but such an critical work. I find at the end of the year the units the kids remember best are the ones they felt connected to them here and now. You are right, it is a battle, but one worth fighting. #scitlap
I'm not sure. I have a love-hate relationship with study guides. If taught/checked/modeled along the way, this would be a great way to teach a unit! #scitlap
Interleaving: I see this working well with skills. Using a balance to find mass in different labs. Reinforces the same skill but different ways. #scitlap
It is something to consider. I too have a love/hate relationship. I have tried many methods but haven't found one that I have settled on yet. [sigh] #scitlap
I have a science teacher who goes to the math teachers and gives them problems on density or whatever we are working on and then finds ways for us to use their math concepts on what we are studying. I love this example of cross-curricular interleaving. #scitlap
Concrete Examples
Use CORRECT specific examples to understand abstract ideas
Start with ideas from the teacher then work up to your own created ideas
Science and be abstract. How do we lead our Ss to these examples? How do you make them stick? #scitlaphttps://t.co/cckSUPBTav
Interweavjnvg: awesome with Quia, Quizlet and digital flashcards and especially Quizlet Live. Student can choose activity to best reformat or throw them a challenge. I like students have resource choice to study & learn. #scitlap
I need to create some quizlets that have concepts interleaved. I am learning that these practices are things you have to intentionally plan to do. #scitlap
Concrete Examples for Abstract ideas this is where I like video clips, Sims with guided lesson, and making models that move or are interactive #scitlap
Agreed I love this stuff. It's a recent obsession...wish I had more time to explore. I didn't even know there was such a thing as learning scientists until recently. #scitlap
I need to do better with models. They make such a difference and provide a great resource to return and talk about. What are some unique models you use that we may not think about? #scitlap
Dual Coding
Link the content to visuals.
Explain what the visual means without looking at the words. Goal: Ss draw their own visual from memory.
What are some ways to implement this? How do you get the Ss to draw? How can you share it out? #scitlaphttps://t.co/cckSUPBTav
I think this is the perfect fit for sketch notes. Also for those hesitant to draw we do “infoPics” they pic an image that represents the concept then in 7 words or less explains the connection. #scitlap
Do you have any student examples of sketch notes you can share? I would love more of my kids to do these but it seems many are hesitant to try. #scitlap
Dual coding: besides sketch noting, short film clips with like explain everything, Ss can also use things like Frayer Model (also #Eduprotocols) or other graphic organizers. #scitlap
Look at you interleaving already! @jmattmiller talks about having a random picture and having the Ss tell you how it relates to what they are studying. I have only done it once, but was blown away by their connections. (Thanks for the reminder) #scitlap.
I'm thinking about the flower parts that Ss just learned about. If ONE day they had the image and the NEXT day they had the terms and had to draw.... #scitlap
Yep, I just might use this tomorrow! Ss just finished the Industrial Revolution in social studies, so I taught them about the peppered moth population shift. Now, to find the PERFECT image... #scitlap
