A1: Inquiry in the classroom involves student led discovery, inductive reasoning, and opportunitues for students to take ownership of what they learn and what they use to learn it. #ycsdchat
A1: inquiery (spelling?) Is the why behind the content. Why do verbs conjugate that way in Spanish? Why do we care about speaking another language?#ycsdchat
A1: In my understanding of inquiry in social studies, inquiry is where students answer guiding questions by corroborating information from amongst a variety of sources. #ycsdchat
A1: Inquiry leads to deeper learning experiences. Students are engaged in asking questions, finding solutions, and developing a better understanding. #ycsdchat
A2 essential question first, research or find sources of information, then unite the information, maybe reframe the question and share that by answering the question #ycsdchat
A2: Ask the question, research for information, process or think it through, and then share out. In the sharing new questions will be raised and you can then just repeat the process. #ycsdchat
A2- I found these great examples with a google search- I love how there are so many commonalities between the process in many different disciplines! #ycsdchat
A2: 1. Engaging students in the inquiry
2. Elicit hypotheses
3. Gathering data
4. Drawing conclusions
5. Asking more questions to see if students were able to reach a level of understanding with the initial inquiries #ycsdchat
A2- #ycsdchat cycles to me sound closed, and I prefer a different way of conceptualizing the āsteps.ā Itās a bit messier than a cycle; perhaps itās more akin to a āchoose your own adventureā narrative, though everyone eventually gets to the same ābig picture.ā
A2: I donāt necessarily think itās a cycle that should end. When students plot their learning and reach that knowledge benchmark set, then they should have confidence to continue learning more #ycsdchat
A2: Thinking of it as a cycle is appropriate because it is engaging in ongoing learning. It involves observation, questioning, hypothesizing, investigating, evaluating, revising and back to the beginning. I do think some of these steps overlap and integrate. #ycsdchat
A3: I think itās important students feel invested in their learning. Giving them the ability to explore and learn at different paces/subjects/pathways is important in building a well rounded future adult #ycsdchat
A3: Inquiry builds problem solving skills and encourages asking questions. Students often don't realize how much they can learn by just asking the question to begin with. #ycsdchat
A3: Inquiry in Social Studies requires students to be able to pull important information from across primary and secondary resources. Students who have this skill tend to be better able to assess the reliability of sources than those who lack the skill of corroboration. #ycsdchat
Yes! I just had a student tell me she wonāt ask questions or even accept help because she is afraid of looking dumb. Youāre only dumb if you donāt ask, because how else will you learn???? #ycsdchat
A3 Sorry Iām late tonight for this great topic! The inquiry process allows Ss to work from creating to application & reflection. Skills needed for college/career ready Ss #ycsdchat@Historywmoses
A3- #ycsdchat Engagement: students know the essential skills they are supposed to acquire, and get to see them at work. It is a much more authentic opportunity to assess their own knowledge and learning.
Q4: For me, my biggest struggle tends to be finding source materials. The things I enjoy reading and investigating are not always things my students enjoy, and finding materials appropriate for a class of diverse learners and reading levels is always a challenge. #ycsdchat
A4 the student centered part is my struggle! Also, lang output in secondary lang classes is often novice low (memorized lists) that Ss become frustrated that they can't say it right....#ycsdchat
A4: Creating effective inquiry lessons that fit into the standards nicely and providing scaffolds and structure for some students but allowing more freedom to others. #ycsdchat
A4- Personally, I struggle with writing truly compelling questions. I know that something I find compelling might not be so interesting for my students! This article does a great job helping frame how I think about things... https://t.co/Gbyim2eyYL#ycsdchat
@DiscoveryEd has some great resources for student inquiry. There's more than just video clips. And there are great features for Ts to personalize learning for their Ss #ycsdchat
Q4: For me, my biggest struggle tends to be finding source materials. The things I enjoy reading and investigating are not always things my students enjoy, and finding materials appropriate for a class of diverse learners and reading levels is always a challenge. #ycsdchat
A4 My metaphor is a museum walk. See the main exhibits for general knowledge then dive into the specialty areas and back rooms that have all the really cool stuff! #ycsdchat
A4 Moving from teacher led inquiry to student led inquiry. I have large classes of very diverse learners who will stay and play if given too much freedom to inquire.#ycsdchat
A5 AP spanishlanguage and culture has an essential question about culture, beauty and aesthetics. I'd like to have the ss explore it & develop their own assessment #ycsdchat
A5: Easy...at the end of the year āModern Peopleā & what important accomplishment they have made! In the 2008 SOLs the people were listed but now in the 2015 standards itās open ended. I would love for my students to lead the charge and decide who āmakes the cutā #ycsdchat
A5: Argh, there are too many I want to do! I especially love inquires that compare a world my students know (like modern U. S.) to one Iām teaching them about (like Ancient Rome). How was slavery in one society different from slavery in another? Their governments? Art? #ycsdchat
A5: In third grade, we have been trying to incorporate at least one inductive lesson into our units in reading and math. I'd like to continue with that as well as to use it more often in upcoming science content such as soil and Earth/moon/sun relationships. #ycsdchat
