I love this graphic- it really helps me understand the relationships between a lot of related ideas! It is from this great mindshift article https://t.co/bz5OcQKoED credit to @trev_mackenzie and @rbathursthunt #ycsdchat
  • MrsSMBean Jan 30 @ 8:09 PM EST
A1: Simply put... when students drive their own learning. #ycsdchat
  • MsInsley - Moderator Jan 30 @ 8:09 PM EST
A1: Providing Ss the opportunity to explore different ways to learn a concept, put it to use, or display what they know #ycsdchat
  • MrsCooperYES Jan 30 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1: Inquiry in the classroom involves student led discovery, inductive reasoning, and opportunitues for students to take ownership of what they learn and what they use to learn it. #ycsdchat
  • proctor_o Jan 30 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1: inquiery (spelling?) Is the why behind the content. Why do verbs conjugate that way in Spanish? Why do we care about speaking another language?#ycsdchat
  • MsDurio Jan 30 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1: I love your graphic @Historywmoses because thatā€™s kind of what came to my mind - multiple pathways. #ycsdchat
  • MrsD_AcademicLa Jan 30 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1 To me inquiry is student based learning where they have the freedom to explore topics however interests/works best for them #ycsdchat
  • Historywmoses Jan 30 @ 8:11 PM EST
I love the idea of student-led discovery! Such an important part of the inquiry process. #ycsdchat
    In reply to @MrsCooperYES
  • ElizabethLeste6 Jan 30 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1 Inquiry can start with a 'hook' intro of the concept that students can discover through various formats. #ycsdchat
  • REEdelstein Jan 30 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1: In my understanding of inquiry in social studies, inquiry is where students answer guiding questions by corroborating information from amongst a variety of sources. #ycsdchat
  • MrsSMBean Jan 30 @ 8:12 PM EST
This breaks it down so itā€™s seems easy to understand and implement. https://t.co/UP6trde9lZ #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Jan 30 @ 8:13 PM EST
A1: Inquiry leads to deeper learning experiences. Students are engaged in asking questions, finding solutions, and developing a better understanding. #ycsdchat
  • hball1025 Jan 30 @ 8:14 PM EST
A1-Simply stated inquiry is Student directed; interest driven in the classroom #ycsdchat
  • drjaimemiller Jan 30 @ 8:15 PM EST
A1: #ycsdchat Inquiry is going beyond passive learning. Itā€™s posing questions and having discussions to create knowledge.
  • cdbauer Jan 30 @ 8:16 PM EST
Hi #ycsdchat. Glad to be joining you!
  • Historywmoses Jan 30 @ 8:16 PM EST
Those are some great thoughts! Now, let's narrow it down. #ycsdchat
  • proctor_o Jan 30 @ 8:19 PM EST
A2 essential question first, research or find sources of information, then unite the information, maybe reframe the question and share that by answering the question #ycsdchat
  • cdbauer Jan 30 @ 8:19 PM EST
A1 Inquiry is student led discovery... maybe add some on some facilitation and direction from the teacher #ycsdchat
  • MrsSMBean Jan 30 @ 8:19 PM EST
A2: Ask the question, research for information, process or think it through, and then share out. In the sharing new questions will be raised and you can then just repeat the process. #ycsdchat
  • Historywmoses Jan 30 @ 8:20 PM EST
A2- I found these great examples with a google search- I love how there are so many commonalities between the process in many different disciplines! #ycsdchat
  • MsInsley - Moderator Jan 30 @ 8:20 PM EST
A2: question, research, test it/try it/present it, reflect, keep questioning #ycsdchat
  • Historywmoses Jan 30 @ 8:20 PM EST
That unite the info is so important, and kids really struggle with it! #ycsdchat
    In reply to @proctor_o
  • REEdelstein Jan 30 @ 8:20 PM EST
A2: 1. Engaging students in the inquiry 2. Elicit hypotheses 3. Gathering data 4. Drawing conclusions 5. Asking more questions to see if students were able to reach a level of understanding with the initial inquiries #ycsdchat
  • hball1025 Jan 30 @ 8:21 PM EST
    A2-interest, questions, relevance, knowledge, discovery, problem-solving #ycsdchat

A2 Questions and discovery lead to more questions and more discovery #ycsdchat
  • MrsCooperYES Jan 30 @ 8:22 PM EST
A2: Ask, investigate, synthesize information, decide on an answer to originial and/or ask a new question based on new information #ycsdchat
  • Historywmoses Jan 30 @ 8:22 PM EST
    Just like life! #ycsdchat
    In reply to @cdbauer
  • drjaimemiller Jan 30 @ 8:23 PM EST
A2- #ycsdchat cycles to me sound closed, and I prefer a different way of conceptualizing the ā€œsteps.ā€ Itā€™s a bit messier than a cycle; perhaps itā€™s more akin to a ā€œchoose your own adventureā€ narrative, though everyone eventually gets to the same ā€œbig picture.ā€
  • Powell4CNU_GMS Jan 30 @ 8:23 PM EST
A2: I donā€™t necessarily think itā€™s a cycle that should end. When students plot their learning and reach that knowledge benchmark set, then they should have confidence to continue learning more #ycsdchat
  • ElizabethLeste6 Jan 30 @ 8:24 PM EST
A2 Intro or hook of concepts, group sharing ideas, narrow down ideas, hands on problem solving, teacher redirection and encouraging, sharing #ycsdchat
  • Historywmoses Jan 30 @ 8:24 PM EST
Oooooh- because sometimes you learn something that might make you go back and re-evaluate what you think you know. #ycsdchat
    In reply to @drjaimemiller
  • Historywmoses Jan 30 @ 8:25 PM EST
We will talk about that more in a bit! #ycsdchat
    In reply to @MrsSMBean
  • kecagle - Moderator Jan 30 @ 8:25 PM EST
A2: Thinking of it as a cycle is appropriate because it is engaging in ongoing learning. It involves observation, questioning, hypothesizing, investigating, evaluating, revising and back to the beginning. I do think some of these steps overlap and integrate. #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Jan 30 @ 8:26 PM EST
The struggle is real...and purposeful. #ycsdchat

    Q3 for the #ycsdchat rockstars!
  • kdenny_ Jan 30 @ 8:30 PM EST
A3 Students learn and internalize more by doing instead of hearing. #ycsdchat
  • MrsSMBean Jan 30 @ 8:30 PM EST
A3: one of the top benefits is student ownership and engagement! Itā€™s really THEIR classroom and THEIR learning! #ycsdchat
  • Powell4CNU_GMS Jan 30 @ 8:30 PM EST
A3: I think itā€™s important students feel invested in their learning. Giving them the ability to explore and learn at different paces/subjects/pathways is important in building a well rounded future adult #ycsdchat
  • proctor_o Jan 30 @ 8:31 PM EST
A3: inquiry allows the free thinkers to shine. And we aren't doing worksheet, directed practice. It's real and natural #ycsdchat
  • hball1025 Jan 30 @ 8:31 PM EST
A3--at the top is interest, choice, ownership of their learning #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Jan 30 @ 8:32 PM EST
Encourage students to focus on the process of research and discovery.https://t.co/9QurhgGCyG #ycsdchat
  • ElizabethLeste6 Jan 30 @ 8:32 PM EST
A3 I find their ideas are amazing when I give them open ended lessons where they discover something new, all the while wrapped up in a sol.#ycsdchat
  • Historywmoses Jan 30 @ 8:33 PM EST
Arenā€™t those on the indicators of engagement? #sensingatrend #ycsdchat
    In reply to @hball1025
  • MrsCooperYES Jan 30 @ 8:33 PM EST
A3: Inquiry builds problem solving skills and encourages asking questions. Students often don't realize how much they can learn by just asking the question to begin with. #ycsdchat
  • MrsD_AcademicLa Jan 30 @ 8:33 PM EST
A3 interest, engagement, and buy in #ycsdchat
  • REEdelstein Jan 30 @ 8:34 PM EST
A3: Inquiry in Social Studies requires students to be able to pull important information from across primary and secondary resources. Students who have this skill tend to be better able to assess the reliability of sources than those who lack the skill of corroboration. #ycsdchat
  • Historywmoses Jan 30 @ 8:35 PM EST
Yes! I just had a student tell me she wonā€™t ask questions or even accept help because she is afraid of looking dumb. Youā€™re only dumb if you donā€™t ask, because how else will you learn???? #ycsdchat
    In reply to @MrsCooperYES
  • wallaceteaching Jan 30 @ 8:35 PM EST
A3 Sorry Iā€™m late tonight for this great topic! The inquiry process allows Ss to work from creating to application & reflection. Skills needed for college/career ready Ss #ycsdchat @Historywmoses
  • MsInsley - Moderator Jan 30 @ 8:35 PM EST
A3: It builds more interest and makes the learning more engaging #ycsdchat
  • Historywmoses Jan 30 @ 8:36 PM EST
Definitely. Do you use the inquiry design model from @C3Teachers? They have a database of great resources that require students to do this. #ycsdchat
    In reply to @REEdelstein, @C3Teachers
  • hball1025 Jan 30 @ 8:37 PM EST
A3--it allows for natural curiosity, exploration, and discovery too which also leads to engaged learners #ycsdchat
  • Historywmoses Jan 30 @ 8:38 PM EST
  • wallaceteaching Jan 30 @ 8:38 PM EST
#ycsdchat Awesome way to make learning meaningful. #buyin
    • ElizabethLeste6 Jan 30 @ 8:32 PM EST
A3 I find their ideas are amazing when I give them open ended lessons where they discover something new, all the while wrapped up in a sol.#ycsdchat
  • drjaimemiller Jan 30 @ 8:39 PM EST
A3- #ycsdchat Engagement: students know the essential skills they are supposed to acquire, and get to see them at work. It is a much more authentic opportunity to assess their own knowledge and learning.
  • hball1025 Jan 30 @ 8:40 PM EST
A4--Letting go as the SOL's and high stakes tests still drive so much in regards to the what Ss are supposed to know #ycsdchat
  • MrsD_AcademicLa Jan 30 @ 8:40 PM EST
A4 Independence is a struggle for my ss #ycsdchat
  • REEdelstein Jan 30 @ 8:40 PM EST
Q4: For me, my biggest struggle tends to be finding source materials. The things I enjoy reading and investigating are not always things my students enjoy, and finding materials appropriate for a class of diverse learners and reading levels is always a challenge. #ycsdchat
  • Historywmoses Jan 30 @ 8:41 PM EST
A4- @trev_mackenzie and @rbathursthunt also made this awesome graphic about easing students into the deep end of inquiry. Good article here, too- https://t.co/wMnjg3GhIP #ycsdchat
  • proctor_o Jan 30 @ 8:42 PM EST
A4 the student centered part is my struggle! Also, lang output in secondary lang classes is often novice low (memorized lists) that Ss become frustrated that they can't say it right....#ycsdchat
  • MrsSMBean Jan 30 @ 8:42 PM EST
A4: Letting go of control...where you cannot really ā€œtimeā€ it or pace it or even control where the questioning goes! #ycsdchat
  • MrsCooperYES Jan 30 @ 8:43 PM EST
A4: Creating effective inquiry lessons that fit into the standards nicely and providing scaffolds and structure for some students but allowing more freedom to others. #ycsdchat
  • Historywmoses Jan 30 @ 8:44 PM EST
A4- Personally, I struggle with writing truly compelling questions. I know that something I find compelling might not be so interesting for my students! This article does a great job helping frame how I think about things... https://t.co/Gbyim2eyYL #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Jan 30 @ 8:44 PM EST
@DiscoveryEd has some great resources for student inquiry. There's more than just video clips. And there are great features for Ts to personalize learning for their Ss #ycsdchat
#ycsdchat
  • wallaceteaching Jan 30 @ 8:44 PM EST
A4 My metaphor is a museum walk. See the main exhibits for general knowledge then dive into the specialty areas and back rooms that have all the really cool stuff! #ycsdchat
  • ElizabethLeste6 Jan 30 @ 8:45 PM EST
A4 Moving from teacher led inquiry to student led inquiry. I have large classes of very diverse learners who will stay and play if given too much freedom to inquire.#ycsdchat

A5 AP spanishlanguage and culture has an essential question about culture, beauty and aesthetics. I'd like to have the ss explore it & develop their own assessment #ycsdchat
  • MrsSMBean Jan 30 @ 8:52 PM EST
A5: Easy...at the end of the year ā€œModern Peopleā€ & what important accomplishment they have made! In the 2008 SOLs the people were listed but now in the 2015 standards itā€™s open ended. I would love for my students to lead the charge and decide who ā€œmakes the cutā€ #ycsdchat
  • Historywmoses Jan 30 @ 8:52 PM EST
    That sounds like fun! #ycsdchat
    In reply to @proctor_o
  • REEdelstein Jan 30 @ 8:53 PM EST
A5: Argh, there are too many I want to do! I especially love inquires that compare a world my students know (like modern U. S.) to one Iā€™m teaching them about (like Ancient Rome). How was slavery in one society different from slavery in another? Their governments? Art? #ycsdchat
  • MrsCooperYES Jan 30 @ 8:53 PM EST
A5: In third grade, we have been trying to incorporate at least one inductive lesson into our units in reading and math. I'd like to continue with that as well as to use it more often in upcoming science content such as soil and Earth/moon/sun relationships. #ycsdchat
  • Historywmoses Jan 30 @ 8:53 PM EST
