Hey, all! Jenn from Student-Centered World, here....taking a relaxing breath after just finishing up our first course that goes live on Wednesday! #learnlap
Welcome to your first chat, Kaitlyn! I've mostly lurked until this recent book study. Finding it to be a lot of fun...great way to reflect on my teaching and get amazing ideas and inspiration from other educators! #LearnLAP
A1 Anytime my students can get out of their seats and get their hands on something, collaborating, friendly competition, having fun with learning I call that active learning. #LearnLAP
In my room, "Active Learning" involves a lot of workshop-style lessons and activities throughout the day. A lot of movement, collaboration, time to apply new learning, and as much student choice as I can incorporate (given so much district-mandated curriculum) #LearnLAP

A1: Active learning looks like full participation, sounds engaged conversations, feels like excitement and discovery...the vehicle for active learning can take many modes - allow S suggestions! #LearnLAP
Look at my banner-class in action. Using self-pacing and some choice in a #flipclass, Ss are always doing something - engaged in content, practice/processing, extending understanding. Lots of hands on, not a lots of lecturing. #learnlap
A1: Inquiry based instruction! Letting Ss mess about with equipment, form hypotheses and determine for themselves how to proceed in data collection, analysis and presentation. You can imagine that all only works out ~50% of the time but it's so fun. #learnlap
A1: Students asking the questions, making a plan to find the answers, reflecting, adjusting, taking risks, seeking help from those around them, making their learning relevant, and being empowered to make an impact in the world. #LearnLAP
A1: As an ESL teacher, it means TALKING and communicating about anything and everything. It means letting tangential conversations blossom into linguistic opportunities. It means teaching "indisputable" one moment and "it's lit" the next. #learnlap
A1: I find you can make ANYTHING active when you give the students choice in the matter.....you need to cover x, y, z and you have options a, b, or c to do it....if they're engaged, it's working (I've heard heated debates stem from this concept bw Ss...it's awesome lol) #learnlap
A1: Active learning includes discussions, reflections, debates, hands on experiences, students are engaged & empowered to take control of their learning through voice & choice #LearnLAP
A1: Active learning looks like SS walking/jumping up and down along a giant number line to learn concepts of more/less, like collecting leaves outside and inspecting their parts with magnifying glass, and like us acting out favorite parts of read aloud books together! #LearnLAP
A1 - I had my students explain about and reflect on our learning experiences throughout the year. Here's what they created:
https://t.co/a4gzkZOZdL#LearnLAP
A1 active learning is when my students are asking the questions and taking the lead to find the answers by communicating and working together. #LearnLAP
A1 Active Learning at the MS level is Ss doing the "heavy lifting". It is sometimes hard to see who the T is, because they are working with the Ss at any time during class, anywhere. Ss are doing what they need to do to learn #LearnLAP
A1. Active Learning can be experimenting where Ss are utilizing skills they have learned to solve problems that relate to everyday life. i.e. crime scene investigation: Unknown cmpds, Chromatography, fingerprinting, testing materials, untilizing data in matrix! #learnlap
A1: active learning is when the students are guided by a big question and are trusted to make sense of it, find meaning, investigate, and build understanding (of course while being supported) #LearnLAP
You will become addicted :) take a look at my pinned tweet for a calendar of as many ed chats as I could find. Adding new ones as they pop up. #learnlap
QUESTION 2: When students are actively involved in their learning, it becomes more meaningful because they've "experienced" it.
Describe a passive activity that you can make more active? Or, share some great active learning lessons you've done in the past! #LearnLAP
Times have changed - I was a music major in HS and had 4 periods of music a day, but in none of them were we permitted to make our own music. I got yelled at for tuning my own guitar even though I had been playing for 10 years at the time. #learnlap
Used to lecture (more than I like to admit) and I flipped class 7 years ago. So much time for activities like project based learning and labs and model making. #FlipClass#LearnLAP
QUESTION 2: When students are actively involved in their learning, it becomes more meaningful because they've "experienced" it.
Describe a passive activity that you can make more active? Or, share some great active learning lessons you've done in the past! #LearnLAP
A2: Iβve seen Ts do a book fair. Like a science fair, where Ss present their take on the book read in class. Would LOVE to do this or something similar #LearnLAP
A2: My Ss study Alabama History. This year, I'm making it more active with choices like S created songs, raps, poems, stories, videos, newscasts, etc. I'm not content with how things have been #learnlap
A2: I'm moving into a position that, for one year, will involve strictly teaching digital skills. I'm hoping that I can find ways to get kids up and moving even though their content will be directly tied to their devices. #learnlap
A2: Having flexibility in the classroom can help with anything. Sometimes the work is drab, but if you have flexible seating, it gives it a different atmosphere and you'll hear things like, "remember the day we were all on the couch? I remember reading..." #learnlap
A2: passive- taking notes on how the first people got to the Americas. Active- ask βhow did the first people get to the Americas. Build at least two working theories and list questions that you need to research to help you build stronger theories.β#LearnLAP
A2: Computation (Physics) practice, Ss need to struggle/fail/get help. I am excited to try letting Ss solve parts of a problem in small groups, then rotate around the room to find all of the "pieces" of the big picture from other groups before a share out. #LearnLAP
A2 We tried PBL "Kid Town" unit this past March...talk about active learning! Put everything else on hold for weeks. Students learned tons about community, worked amazingly well throughout, and experienced the success and failures of creating and running their own town. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 2: When students are actively involved in their learning, it becomes more meaningful because they've "experienced" it.
Describe a passive activity that you can make more active? Or, share some great active learning lessons you've done in the past! #LearnLAP
A2: I don't think I can just take an activity and make it active, at least I'm not able to think that way at the moment. It think it will take a bigger change in how I think about the way learning happens in the classroom. #learnlap
A2. I did a weaving proj., the pictures were too big. We can try making something 3d, but a lot smaller requiring less time! Where Ss can travel around to different tables to get different materials to decorate their items! #learnlap
A2 Anytime I can get them out of their seats instead of giving me a written response that results in the same feedback I do. I can get a clear picture of their understanding by having them move to 4 corners or play a game. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 3: (See Image) Where can you integrate debates, simulations, fairs, projects, or other active learning experiences in your curriculum? Where do you already have these kinds of activities in the curriculum? #LearnLAP
Taught 7 habits of happy kids for our manner unit! Instead of just reading the books I had my Ss act out the bad examples and then teach us how to change them to make better choices! They loved it! #LearnLAP
I start doing monthly projects/presentations (they have a choice from many options, including a book presentation) in January with my firsties. It's awesome to see them continue to build confidence each month. #LearnLAP
Instead of a review test at Ss desks, I have questions posted around the room that they travel to with a clipboard in partners to talk it out. They hand in their notes when they are done for accountability.#LearnLAP
A3: My hope is to make each of our digital skills projects tied to other content areas, digital citizenship or current events. This should allow plenty of room for active discussion and debate. #learnlap
Lucky your students that you are mixing it up and not sticking with what you've been doing. More work, but far better results (and more fun!) #LearnLAP
A3: Math is a great place for active learning. Check out https://t.co/rWSXBJPE4o for inspirational lessons that get students actively thinking about ideas. #LearnLAP (huge Jo Boaler fan!)
A3: Debates, simulations, fairs, projects all make me think of science and social studies. So I think there are great opps to integrate these ACTIVitities into reading and writing (beyond research projects or plays). #LearnLAP
Added 30% more labs in the past year or two, recently started trying out project based units (so many cool projects). Going to use a problem based unit next year. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 3: (See Image) Where can you integrate debates, simulations, fairs, projects, or other active learning experiences in your curriculum? Where do you already have these kinds of activities in the curriculum? #LearnLAP
A3: I like integrating debates into controversial topics. Like GMO's or cloning. I teach genetics and will try a debate on genetically engineering babies... found an article that UK is actually doing that. #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP A3: We've already integrated PBL's into the curriculum, but you are inspiring me to brainstorm possibilities for debate, skit etc for Spanish 1 and 2...!
Paul, reading Chapter 6 of #LearnLAP this week just further reinforced to me how lucky your kids are to have you as a teacher. You really knock it out of the park!
A2 We play "Earn your way Out" with out vocabulary. They give me a def or use it in a sentence and if they are correct they can head to their lockers slightly early if not they have to go to the back of the line. #loveit#LearnLAP
A3: Will be starting the year with waves (in physics) this year -- I wonder if students could debate the danger/safety of types of electromagnetic waves to learn about them rather than lecture or readings. #learnlap
A2: Often, I see where Ss are asked to read & record thoughts in a journal. Why not take these reflections & allow for discussion about what was read & how they feel about it. These conversations are so powerful in showing who understands & who may have misconceptions #LearnLAP
QUESTION 2: When students are actively involved in their learning, it becomes more meaningful because they've "experienced" it.
Describe a passive activity that you can make more active? Or, share some great active learning lessons you've done in the past! #LearnLAP
A3: Honestly, the best way to find new activites is to play with Google..type in the topic and add "student-centered", "project-based", "simulation", etc. and the world will pop up....amend for what will work for your students and you have an entirely new activity #learnlap
A3: In ESL, we can argue about anything. Debates galore. It doesn't even have to be an academic topic. Any opportunity to talk is an important opportunity to take, especially for beginners. Also, love to use social media just to get them to learn how to type. #learnlap
QUESTION 3: (See Image) Where can you integrate debates, simulations, fairs, projects, or other active learning experiences in your curriculum? Where do you already have these kinds of activities in the curriculum? #LearnLAP
A3: Instead of just learning about "Energy Transfers" we identified energy transfers in toys & gadgets by playing with them and then describing the energy transfers on video: https://t.co/Q2Ynxx7SPt#LearnLAP
A3. During our discussion period of results, we sometimes get quite a debate going as to which results are correct in comparison, and how they differ! The observ. is in the eye of the beholder! We display proj. so P can see them! We have demos for P, too! #learnlap
A3: Ss could defend the points of view of the protagonist OR antagonist in stories in debates. History is an area where debates would fit in nicely in my CR as well as Science. #learnlap
A1: In our middle school literacy workshop, active learning means active thinking. The beauty of workshop is that it amplifies active learning and thinking; time is spent inquiring, applying, reflecting, and sharing. For more: https://t.co/hV9Y5NScsk#learnlap#TCRWP
A3) I really want to tie debate and a Learning project into math. Iβm teaching math for all of 5th Grade next year so Iβm excited to step out and try would you rather math and do a math project all about how math might play into a studentβs future career #KidsDeserveIt#learnlap
A2: teaching 1984 for Ss to understand society, I played a 2 minute power point of certain words with The Bells by Edgar Allen Poe. Ss began to wait for PP until Friday when it wasnβt played #pavlovsdog#classicalconditioning#LearnLAP
QUESTION 2: When students are actively involved in their learning, it becomes more meaningful because they've "experienced" it.
Describe a passive activity that you can make more active? Or, share some great active learning lessons you've done in the past! #LearnLAP
A3 Our Kid Town unit was a full on simulation. Classroom was transformed into the student-created town. I had to let go of so much of my control that month...to amazing results. Want to see where else I can fit this type of learning in this year. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 3: (See Image) Where can you integrate debates, simulations, fairs, projects, or other active learning experiences in your curriculum? Where do you already have these kinds of activities in the curriculum? #LearnLAP
We watch a mystery video every week so if we donβt have a debate or project to do I allow my students to ask Qs of things they are curious about and we search videos and read books on them! #LearnLAP
QUESTION 4: Active learning takes time. Often, things like Science Fair projects and hand-made projects are assigned as homework, impacting parents and students' home life.
How can you create active learning experiences that students can do completely in school? #LearnLAP
A3 We loved the Big Question Debate this year and also had a guest teach the class about an Diego Old Globe's production of The Importance of Being Earnest. So fun! Selfie School Scavenger Hunt was great to introduce 9th to their new school! #learnlap#unlimitedteacher
A3: When reading various texts, I look for opportunities to have Ss discuss different perspectives from the charactersβ POV and to use their prior knowledge to enhance the conversation #LearnLAP
QUESTION 3: (See Image) Where can you integrate debates, simulations, fairs, projects, or other active learning experiences in your curriculum? Where do you already have these kinds of activities in the curriculum? #LearnLAP
QUESTION 4: Active learning takes time. Often, things like Science Fair projects and hand-made projects are assigned as homework, impacting parents and students' home life.
How can you create active learning experiences that students can do completely in school? #LearnLAP
A1 Active learning in 1st grade is where kids pose questions, collaborate on ideas, communicate about what they notice & continually refine new questions. #LearnLAP
Typing is an important skill that isn't explicitly taught much anymore. When I learned Russian, I was able to write in beautiful script but I couldn't text and relied on the microphone. Not convenient. It took months to be comfortable typing. #learnlap
A4: I keep things simple in my room - little to no homework so that I can be a large part of the learning and creating process with my students. Their work DURING is just as important (often more so!) than the final product. I need to see every step. #learnlap
A4: So much of what I do in PreK is active learning! We sky-write the letters. We sing songs and do actions for all of our academic areas. Young children learn best by doing. #LearnLAP
A4: I teach online, so all projects are completed at home. If I was in bricks & mortar, I would help sts with science fair projects at school allowing others to help assist with the project. #LearnLAP
A3 @geniushour is a regular part of our ELA program. So many research, writing and presenting skills built right in a fit into outcomes. Students are in charge and leading the way. #LearnLAP
A4: Iβve had Ss suggest themes to read about & look for selections that they would recommend. They then had to share this info with the group & we decided what to read next. The Ss were so involved & many read texts they never would have before based on their peers #LearnLAP
QUESTION 4: Active learning takes time. Often, things like Science Fair projects and hand-made projects are assigned as homework, impacting parents and students' home life.
How can you create active learning experiences that students can do completely in school? #LearnLAP
A4: All learning takes place in my classroom including projects. Integration of content into the ELA block is a must for this to happen along with flexible scheduling, a laser-focused plan, and a supportive, trusting administrator #LearnLAP
QUESTION 4: Active learning takes time. Often, things like Science Fair projects and hand-made projects are assigned as homework, impacting parents and students' home life.
How can you create active learning experiences that students can do completely in school? #LearnLAP
QUESTION 4: Active learning takes time. Often, things like Science Fair projects and hand-made projects are assigned as homework, impacting parents and students' home life.
How can you create active learning experiences that students can do completely in school? #LearnLAP
A4: Still need to think of an answer to this question, but I found that it's not just time but also resources. Some kids just don't have access to the junk needed to do most physics projects. And most have no idea how to use tools. #learnlap
A4 If it has value, it should be done in class. A Ss life outside of class should not impede their ability to be successful, since as MS kiddos they often don't control their homelives. Home learning is practice time, and won't be grading it anymore. #LearnLAP
A4: decide what is meaningful, get rid of the things that arenβt. Do t give homework because parents might expect it. Give homework that is independent and promotes reflection not recitation and memorization #LearnLAP
A4 Besides reading the novel (which is sometimes read in class, but in HS ELA, sometimes they must read outside of class), I don't assign homework. Even essay writing is done in class. It was such a productive shift! #learnlap#unlimitedteacher
A4: We use the workshop model, meaning our lesson is ten minutes or less (clarity + brevity). The rest of the time is for inquiry, application, discussion/exploration, and reflection. #learnlap#TCRWP
A4 Ch.6 of #LearnLAP really had me pondering this...especially knowing that the parents will likely take over the home learning experience. Trying to consider how to have students do their choice projects at school...but without 1:1 tablets not sure how to make it work...???
QUESTION 4: Active learning takes time. Often, things like Science Fair projects and hand-made projects are assigned as homework, impacting parents and students' home life.
How can you create active learning experiences that students can do completely in school? #LearnLAP
A4: Our Science Fair / Inquiry Fair / Passion Time Fair is done COMPLETELY in school! I'm every student's assistant for experiments & we ALL work together on the report: https://t.co/W6xqqVL9O0
Blog Post: https://t.co/nKtoUold3b#LearnLAP
A4: I often assign most reading as homework with class time used to βdo the work.β I donβt know with an English that that I can avoid homework totally, but Iβve def assigned less and more meaningfully #LearnLAP
A4 in the mornings for 30 min my students get their goal time! They created their own goals on what they wanted to work on and created steps to meet these goals. Love seeing how they work together and cheer each other on! #LearnLAP
A2 Excited to move low stakes journals for writing practice to BLOGS! Students can still practice new writing skills, but now with more voice, choice, and authentic audiences! The need for clarity increases too when the audience can ask questions! #learnlap#unlimitedteacher
"decide what is meaningful, get rid of the things that arenβt" - so well said, Sean! This is a tough one and is definitely a goal of mine this year. Thanks! #LearnLAP
A4: I flip the classroom with @edpuzzle. They have a week or more to watch the video (where I can see their results in real time) and then when they get to class, they have the baseline information of the content and all our classtime is spent hands-on, diving in #learnlap
QUESTION 5: (See Image) Could Project-Based Learning (PBL) make a positive impact on engagement and motivation in your classroom? Describe one (or more) area(s) of your curriculum where you can integrate PBL. #LearnLAP
I teach middle school, so a little different, biggest thing is teach them how to choose meaningful questions that they really care about (for more than a day)
#learnlap
A2 One way for young writers to share their interactive books is through inviting a friend to participate with them and help 'teach' their story. Audience members follow up w/ ?s & Compliments. #LearnLAP
A4: We have a "genius hour" called PAW U at our school. K-5 Ss collaborate, create, and connect through problem solving or producing projects on topics they CHOOSE & LEAD. #LearnLAP No prep work by T bc it is all led by Ss. T only facilitates.
You and your students are going to LOVE this! Our class has literacy blogs (via @Kidblog all about their reading. By giving them choice, it's been amazing to see so many more sides to them than you would see otherwise (through essays, vlogs, listicles, etc.). #learnlap
A5: PBL makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE. If you haven't tried it, you are MISSING OUT. You will be blown away by what your students can produce, ESPECIALLY if you don't expect cookie cutter projects. Give them basic guidelines and let them have at it. AMAZING results. #learnlap
A5 I teach mainly ELA and social. Project based learning plays a big part in our day. Last year my students made podcast for a health topic. We called it the Health Challenge. https://t.co/UwjlgstkPv#LearnLAP
#LearnLAP A5: PBL's are an active part of our classroom learning. I plan to have students review last year's concepts to prepare to begin to learn this year's.
Iβm having a great time reading all your awesome ideas! I LOVE how many Ts are embracing #LearnLAP, your Ss are so lucky! Pretty amazing ripples, @PaulSolarz π
A5: My students are always more excited to research when they get to choose their topics. This process always translates to higher rates of essays turned in on time! #LearnLAP
You and your students are going to LOVE this! Our class has literacy blogs (via @Kidblog all about their reading. By giving them choice, it's been amazing to see so many more sides to them than you would see otherwise (through essays, vlogs, listicles, etc.). #learnlap
better than project based, make it problem based. A real world problem to solve is totally cross curricular, you would be amazed how many standards you can find that are there
#learnlap
QUESTION 5: (See Image) Could Project-Based Learning (PBL) make a positive impact on engagement and motivation in your classroom? Describe one (or more) area(s) of your curriculum where you can integrate PBL. #LearnLAP
A5 YES! We traded our traditional research paper to be PBL: 80 HS juniors researched, wrote, submitted a grant to try for $20k, hoping to improve ELA rooms for ALL future students. #learnlap
A5: IMO it would increase engagement and motivation, especially if your essential question is open & doesn't have a right/wrong answer. Let ss solve a real life problem through a project. The possibilities of integration are endless. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 5: (See Image) Could Project-Based Learning (PBL) make a positive impact on engagement and motivation in your classroom? Describe one (or more) area(s) of your curriculum where you can integrate PBL. #LearnLAP
A5: In our district, we have integrated PBL units in elementary school for each science & history/social science unit of study. Our building has worked really hard to create student friendly rubrics & work on feedback about the process rather than just on the product #LearnLAP
QUESTION 5: (See Image) Could Project-Based Learning (PBL) make a positive impact on engagement and motivation in your classroom? Describe one (or more) area(s) of your curriculum where you can integrate PBL. #LearnLAP
A3 We continually transform our dramatic play area (post office, fabric store, color lab, museum, photography studio.) The excitement continues to grow as families help make the area more realistic and engaging. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 6: Since our current education system continues to focus on content acquisition over skills development, how can you transfer some of this responsibility to your students? How can we stop TELLING our students everything & start helping them discover it? #LearnLAP
A5: PBL can make an impact if itβs presented right. Ss must be able to know whatβs expected of them. Integrate PBL during multi-media research #learnLAP
QUESTION 5: (See Image) Could Project-Based Learning (PBL) make a positive impact on engagement and motivation in your classroom? Describe one (or more) area(s) of your curriculum where you can integrate PBL. #LearnLAP
A5. Quite easily in STEM areas! Multiple projects can be done in any of the subject areas! Writing the driving question! I was going to try one in math, but after working with my Ss on homework;I need to redesgn proj. to each ind. Ss needs! #learnlap
A5: For the end of our unit on the Great Depression, students ultimately researched homelessness in our area today and then wrote letters to government officials about what can be done to help.....THOSE types of assignments have meaning #learnlap
A6 Doing a workshop today and tomorrow on #Quest4Learning that hits a lot of these points. If you want Ss to pick up the pen, we need to make it a worthwhile task for them to do it. Today's Ss need a WHY! #learnlap
be willing to take risks and relinquish control
do the amazing that you dream of
then make sure the curriculum mandates are met as part of it
think outside the box
#learnlap
QUESTION 6: Since our current education system continues to focus on content acquisition over skills development, how can you transfer some of this responsibility to your students? How can we stop TELLING our students everything & start helping them discover it? #LearnLAP
A6 We need to help them ask good questions and help them know how to sort through the enormous amount of info that is available to them. We also need to step back and trust them to do it with guidance of course. #LearnLAP
A6: I help sts set goals that involve skills. I teach them the importance of 21st century skills, and encourage them to acquire those skills throughout school and life. #LearnLAP
A5: I use PBL a loooot. PBL lets me use the same structure each day so that I waste no time on logistics. Just language development with a goal in mind. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 5: (See Image) Could Project-Based Learning (PBL) make a positive impact on engagement and motivation in your classroom? Describe one (or more) area(s) of your curriculum where you can integrate PBL. #LearnLAP
A6: Funny that you ask. I was just watching a webinar on open questions in math and that's a great example of helping ss discover patterns in math. I think that is powerful. Instead of feeding them the concepts or knowledge, giving them opportunities to discover them!! #LearnLAP
QUESTION 6: Since our current education system continues to focus on content acquisition over skills development, how can you transfer some of this responsibility to your students? How can we stop TELLING our students everything & start helping them discover it? #LearnLAP
A6 #learnLAP THIS DOES IT. I promise! @cultofpedagogy podcast coming out about it soon! Easy shift, greater learning (content AND skills), less prep/scoring, & more students-student, teacher-student time. It says reading but ALL subjects can use it: https://t.co/I15Rs7ygkx
QUESTION 6: Since our current education system continues to focus on content acquisition over skills development, how can you transfer some of this responsibility to your students? How can we stop TELLING our students everything & start helping them discover it? #LearnLAP
A6: It's all about PBL. Honestly. Lay the foundation of content and then have them build whatever building moves them....some will build a house, but some will build a skyscraper...and they will ALL learn more than if you just talked at them https://t.co/Lkohhgj5Fx#learnlap
A6: Our education system can focus on whatever it wants to, but I'll keep teaching skills before content. When kids have the skills, they can acquire any content. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 6: Since our current education system continues to focus on content acquisition over skills development, how can you transfer some of this responsibility to your students? How can we stop TELLING our students everything & start helping them discover it? #LearnLAP
A6: Ss have a lot they are curious about, inspired, passionate about, and want to find solutions for. If we take the time to listen to what they have to say, weβd be amazed. We must know our Ss & their learning styles so we can set them up for success #LearnLAP
QUESTION 6: Since our current education system continues to focus on content acquisition over skills development, how can you transfer some of this responsibility to your students? How can we stop TELLING our students everything & start helping them discover it? #LearnLAP
A6: In reading, I try not to teach a skill or strategy out of context. Instead, skills instruction is embedded into Shared Reading (via Kindle for Mac) as opportunities come up in the reading. I love doing this with "Wonder" - so many great lessons can be taught! #LearnLAP
A6: In writing, I've stopped pointing out missing periods and capitals once a student understands these basic rules. Instead I say, "Find two errors here!" #LearnLAP
A6: In social studies, I presented my students with questions & problems they had to research together & solve collaboratively during our Oregon Trail simulation: https://t.co/PxbENsZwys#LearnLAP
A6: In science, I have students experiment BEFORE learning new content. Later, I explain the content in relation to their experiences! That experiential background knowledge helps make learning more permanent.
Marble Coasters (friction): https://t.co/aIdKAcBDKM#LearnLAP
A6: Give students a voice! I can't count the number of times my instruction di a quick left turn because of something they wanted to know more about. #LearnLAP
A4 Many inquiries lend themselves beautifully to modeling, demos & apprenticeship. We, in fact, begin w/ lrng how to research a topic together (Recent exs: quilts, trains, art masterpieces or ice.) As we model research, writing, presenting, the kids truly get it! #LearnLAP
A6 this is something I am trying to improve on this next year! I am all for trial and error in my classroom! We have done many projects havenβt worked and my Ss learned ITβS OK and are more willing to take control of learning. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 7: Technology is not always the best tool for the job, but sometimes we're missing opportunities to integrate a tech tool to improve collaboration, revision, or creativity!
How can you (or have you) used technology to improve a lesson?
#LearnLAP
A6. When we experiment and create different mixtures, the Ss can see the changes, feel the changes with their hands as they mix the substances, make their own observations, then discuss results of the phen.! #learnlap
A7: Google Classroom makes the world go-round. If you don't use it, it's a complete game changer....most of my class has turned digital thanks to this platform! #learnlap
#learnlap A great story! Frustrated with our room, we met with admin, local company, SD educators, parents. We didn't win but it was EVEN BETTER! We had to be resourceful and resilient. Here's a link to see!: https://t.co/ZKXgIFctLS
I run my class through MS onenote classnotebook, I have students use tech to record labs as they do them, use as a tool for learning,(quests, challenges) and use it to demonstrate learning
#learnlap
QUESTION 7: Technology is not always the best tool for the job, but sometimes we're missing opportunities to integrate a tech tool to improve collaboration, revision, or creativity!
How can you (or have you) used technology to improve a lesson?
#LearnLAP
I need to scoot and help my littles get ready for bed....but thanks for a great chat tonight! Looking forward to next time. Please check out our site when you have a chance.... https://t.co/MHmR7DlvJJ#learnlap
I like to do weekly PLC's (Professional Learning Community Conversations). Ss read up on a topic, and come to class with their own questions to discuss with peers. I give them the topic and background, and they take it in directions meaningful to them. #LearnLAP
A7 technology integration is one of my big 3 goals for this year! I have done a few web quests where the students watched videos to answer questions they created. They enjoyed being able to do it on their own! #LearnLAP

A7: I just came across a resource for making Magnetic Poetry using Google Slides and I think it would be a great way to hear what students know about a new topic, providing some key words to prompt those who have trouble recalling. #learnlap
A7: This year, we went 1:1 with technology & weβve been learning along the way. I want to ensure that the technology is a tool & not just replacing what can be done on paper. Itβs not just loading PDF copies into google classroom. What do we have available now?#LearnLAP
QUESTION 7: Technology is not always the best tool for the job, but sometimes we're missing opportunities to integrate a tech tool to improve collaboration, revision, or creativity!
How can you (or have you) used technology to improve a lesson?

A7 #learnlap We made our Collaboration Screens happen! 1:1 is great but I was concerned about a decrease in discussion. Not anymore! :)

A6: In writing, I've stopped pointing out missing periods and capitals once a student understands these basic rules. Instead I say, "Find two errors here!" #LearnLAP
A7: I like to use Flipgrid for responses in class. An awesome video response platform that is so easy to use! They can respond from in class or at home! Parents can get involved. Ss can respond to each other. Possibilities are endless! #LearnLAP
#learnLAP I like to phrase in questions: One of these seems redundant. Do you know which one? Can you tell me the problem with the topic sentence? What step are you missing here?

A7: As long as you start with the learning objective, technology can definitely be a tool to enhance lessons. You can use technology as a way for students to create products that show their learning, thus providing choice and voice. #LearnLAP

QUESTION 8: (See Image) How can we politely advocate for our students?
What can we say to teachers who strictly lecture & assign worksheets rather than try active learning techniques?
Why should we create lessons that are active, student-led, and technology-filled? #LearnLAP
. It's a game-changer! We need to give our learners a chance to show us what they can do on their own as inquirers and thinkers. For more: https://t.co/nQXDPNJJNz π #learnlap#kidsdeserveit
talk to those teachers about retiring, it they don't prepare students well for the future, they won't have a retirement.

This strikes a sad chord for me today. My SmartBoard has been replaced with a monitor. I used the SmartBoard a lot to actively engage students with material. Need to go backwards with tech (less green, too) and have students put thoughts and ideas on chart paper. #LearnLAP

A6 One huge part of Ss taking ownership is having plenty of open-ended resources & giving kids time & space to explore. Our 5 yr olds will get water droppers on Day 1, go in the garden & try things out! They'll figure out how to handle the pips & tch each other. #LearnLAP
A7b: I've used technology to help my fifth graders create book reviews and book trailers. They were so excited to share what they had learned and their favorite parts of books. #LearnLAP
A8: We donβt want students that are compliant or just engaged- we them to be EMPOWERED! Letβs provide our Ss with learning experiences that inspire them to be active participants in their learning. #LearnLAP

See you all into #tlap!
A8: We do #ObserveMe, so other teachers can see what others do. Great way to advocate for sts b/c then other teachers can see what works for you. #LearnLAP
A8: As department chair, I include in our meetings a chance for teachers to share something they're excited about in their classes. I think it helps raise the bar when we all hear about the cool things happening around us. #learnlap
A8 I can get extremely excited for many of the lessons and projects we are doing! A teacher a couple years ago told me, my excitement and energy to join in with my students was what convinced her to change and try something new. π€·ββοΈ #LearnLAP
A7 We're planning some coding engagements to enhance our inquiries into maps and problem-solving. Excited to see how technology expands the children's understandings! #LearnLAP
A8 "I tried something new today that you might want to try. My students loved it and learned a lot. It was so much better than what I've been doing. Would you like me to show it to you?" #LearnLAP
