We use the Q/A format & we will start with our first question momentarily. Be sure to use our favorite hashtag!
-
We will follow the Q1, Q2, Q3 format with A1, A2, A3 in response! Get ready for our first question!
-
Q1: Why are relationships significant in a school / district setting?
-
Sorry I'm late... Alex Engineering Teacher tweeting from lovely Lake Zurich
-
A1: in order to have the best learning environment you have to build a relationship - Ss learn better when they believe you care
-
Thanks for joining us Alex. Q1 just popped! Good timing!
-
A1 Relationships are at the core of the human experience. They are what drive us to do great things or keep us from greatness
-
A1: everything is about relationships and keeping the focus on teaching and learning, not personal issues. https://t.co/Byd5SAaHNN
-
-
Q1: Why are relationships significant in a school / district setting?
-
Terrific start! People, especially children, are "pleasers" by nature.
-
Schools are like large families. Relationships of all kinds affect one another. Some may even be a little dysfunctional at times.
-
A1: Quality relationships help people stay engaged in a positive way
-
A1. I'm currently co-teaching with the school reading specialist. It's all about a trusting relationship when teaching as a team.
-
True, we would like all relationships to be great, but when they're not...
-
Yes, and it does take work. The team is more powerful than the individual https://t.co/sDMBHjU1Ls
-
-
A1. I'm currently co-teaching with the school reading specialist. It's all about a trusting relationship when teaching as a team.
-
A1 Relationships are imprtnt because we can't build trust w/out having one. When ppl trust they feel safe to share & take risk.
-
Excellent - we will focus on this trust aspect in just a few minutes!
-
Q2: Who are adversarial stakeholders? How do they make us feel?
-
A2 Almost daily, I field phone calls or email messages from frustrated Ps who feel they have been wronged.
-
A2: Often the adversarial people just want to be heard We need to find someone to create the relationship and trust.
-
A2 Admin who dont have trust in their Ts to do the best thing for Ss.
-
A2.1 Sometimes people in the same role as us feel a need to compete.
-
Why are the Ps frustrated? Is it about a student or their issues?
-
Good point - are students ever adversarial?
-
A2: unfortunately Ts can be adversarial as they want to hold on to what's always worked instead of looking for new opportunities
-
I agree, Starts with “I’m a teacher, but that isn’t why I’m calling” https://t.co/AMZ2ITnx8Q
-
-
A2.1 Sometimes people in the same role as us feel a need to compete.
-
Hey all, Matt from McHenry checking in late to the party!
-
A2: adversaries make the work of school like war instead of like a place of learning
-
A2.1 I don't know about all of you, but my emotional capacity has a limit, I don't like to use it all up on adversaries.
-
Good way of describing the frustration many of us feel at times.
-
A2: you here admin & Ts or building admin & district admin complain in those models where decisions are made at the top w/o input
-
Always worked, or gotten them by when measuring to an assessment they devised or focused solely on?
-
Welcome Matt - glad you could join us!
-
I see this so much in my PD work “My test scores are good, why change?” “Wait your class is deadly boring… https://t.co/HFiYJ7RSEB
-
-
A2: unfortunately Ts can be adversarial as they want to hold on to what's always worked instead of looking for new opportunities
-
The adversarial stakeholder is the one whose trust we have not earned & they make me feel like I need to do more to connect.
-
A2-I find those that exhibit these behaviors do not have enough info about what we are doing....making efforts to bring all in
-
A2 adversials take issue with the school or educators. We often get defensive and upset. We Need to listen to understand.
-
we can't be afraid as Ts or Admin. To be able to try new things
-
I like how you've sprinkled this issue with a "growth mindset" perspective!
-
Agreed, but some dont want to connect. Some like solidarity for some reason
-
Agreed Matthew we need to over communicate! https://t.co/cSGC5WubcQ
-
-
A2-I find those that exhibit these behaviors do not have enough info about what we are doing....making efforts to bring all in
-
it's certainly not a good use of time & energy, it's important to avoid power struggles
-
I agree the power struggles take away from our core very important work! https://t.co/aLV7udeZJC
-
-
it's certainly not a good use of time & energy, it's important to avoid power struggles
-
Nice, caring exchanges happening. Apparently, no adversaries here tonight! : ) Q3 coming up momentarily!
-
Q3: What strategies would you recommend for turning adversaries into allies?
-
Violeta. EL teacher. Just lurking
-
seek first to understand before trying to be understood....great point!
-
Do you think it is power? Creating a powerless against change? https://t.co/Vg292UaAC1
-
-
Agreed, but some dont want to connect. Some like solidarity for some reason
-
Please jump in when you feel ready. We value your perspective!
-
I don't just want to communicate, I want to validate feelings and embrace opinions!
-
A3: Find out why they are adversarial, see if you can turn it your way
-
What would be your approach to this?
-
A3-we have two ears and one mouth....use them in a way that allows us to listen more and talk less....encourage discourse
-
A3 Move from listening to action. Some how we have to show them we heard them even if we don't agree with them.
-
-
Agree! Listening seems to be becoming a lost art form. As said earlier, sometimes people just want to be heard
-
A3 The art of leadership is turning your adversary into an ally. Agreeing on a mutual goal is one strategy.
-
the key is building true, authentic relationships, can't be done overnight. However, done right, you can turn them
-
True - keep it focused on the issue. Don't let it get personal. Don't take on their monkeys!
-
A3 It depends on who the adversary is, but likely show the value in the challenges you face. If they want data, examples, etc.
-
Looks like a level-headed group tonight. We're looking to keep the peace and solve problems!
-
Q4: What does "choosing to be positive" look like in your school / classroom?
-
Leave the monkeys at the zoo. We need all our energy moving forward not backwards to yesterdays problems. https://t.co/b4otlNsmvI
-
-
True - keep it focused on the issue. Don't let it get personal. Don't take on their monkeys!
-
Words to live by, for sure!
-
A3: finding and identifying a common goal and staying student centered
-
We always have great minds participating in these discussions https://t.co/QKS1Os00o4
-
-
Looks like a level-headed group tonight. We're looking to keep the peace and solve problems!
-
A4 Sometimes simple things say so much; a smile, a warm greeting, getting to know each other - these things can build trust
-
A4 It is accepting what works and being honest about what could be improved upon or discarded. To often we only see the good.
-
I agree about the what can be improved on, that is critical! https://t.co/tiihh0xjkz
-
-
A4 It is accepting what works and being honest about what could be improved upon or discarded. To often we only see the good.
-
A4 How about helping out a stranger, random acts of senseless kindness! Would these be seen as positive?
-
they are also all positive, positivity can be contagious
-
A4-everyday I am living the dream...our elem building must be a place people want to come to work and learn....need positive ways
-
Right on cue Chris - I agree!
-
Eager to arrive, reluctant to leave - because you offer something so special & compelling!
-
A4 A simple smile passing by can be a very powerful tool...
-
-
A4 Authentic positive interactions are the norm, not just when reacting to a person or incident.
-
Yep, how about learning everyone's name!
-
Q5: How can we build trust in our classrooms / schools?
-
beach park and we can take everyone! Best job that I have the privilege to do each day
-
It catches some Ss & Ps off guard when you remember their first names!
-
visiting classes on a regular basis will also help alleviate anxiety come evaluations
-
A5 Relationships are where it starts. Understanding eachothers challenges and ideals.
-
A5 Show them the way. Be okay w/failing forward & own your mistakes. Have a genuine interest in who your Ts are as ppl.
-
A4: planning in time for fun in class. Laughing can make learning more meaningful
-
A5-it all starts with relationships, kids and parents must know we are there each day to serve and help all succeed
-
A5 Establishing trust can be challenging. I think being unselfish with our time is a good place to start. Get to know each other!
-
Yep, make it conditional - something that can lead to processing / reflection / growth.
-
great point, people are happier, willing to do more & embrace changes and initiates when relationships are positive
-
Trust takes an investment of time/caring and can be lost in an instant. Trust is your most valuable asset, value it!
-
A5 Don't all stakeholders feel more trusted when they are all invited to the "big kids table"? (Childhood Thanksgiving reference)
-
Q6: What can we do to help our students deal positively with their adversaries?
-
Love this, agreed the referenced worked with me! https://t.co/LjplJ7BGKU
-
-
A5 Don't all stakeholders feel more trusted when they are all invited to the "big kids table"? (Childhood Thanksgiving reference)
-
A6 Kids don't always hear us, but they're always watching us. Modeling positivity is vital!
-
A6-given the current reality of everything occurring, we need adults to stand up and model for our S while encouraging
-
A6 We have to coach them & safely guide them through the process of talking w/their adversary.
-
A5 One must show/demonstrate that they care about others before they can begin to earn trust. #1 trait sought after by parents
-
-
Unfortunate that so many of us can relate to this. Understanding underlying issues is key here.
-
A6 Just did a T/S mediation last week. Both shared & both owned their part in the situation.
-
So important! These are life skills sadly. There are adversaries down many paths in life! https://t.co/7yZlI5NzIf
-
-
A6 We have to coach them & safely guide them through the process of talking w/their adversary.
-
A6 Providing instruction on emotional intelligence will provide Ss the tools they need to deal with their own and others emotions
-
Seems so logical - get adversaries together to communicate. Still OK to disagree, with civility.
-
Agreed! My son learned so much from a super hard situation https://t.co/O0oYNcpCCu
-
-
Unfortunate that so many of us can relate to this. Understanding underlying issues is key here.
-
A6 Too bad some of our politicians are such poor role models in the adversarial arena. Had to be said.
-
Q7: What types of support are appreciated when we are facing adversaries?
-
MPC will host Marc Brackett, Yale Dir. of Emotional Intelligence on Feb. 28.Go to https://t.co/GhDVq8dbZQ for more info.
-
You are going to get me started on a rant. Dislike reality for this very reason! Loudest is right mentality - Yuk!
-
A7 I write down my concerns & practice having the conversation paying attention to my voice and tone.
-
-
Looks like we're winding down for the evening - last prompt coming up (PoA)
-
Hard to model civility when our national political landscape is at its lowest
!
-
Q8: Starting tomorrow, what is your plan for building impactful relationships in your school?
-
-
Using Twitter to tell the authentic story of a district. Snap those pictures and share great things! https://t.co/gr72Ddcybd
-
-
Q8: Starting tomorrow, what is your plan for building impactful relationships in your school?
-
A8 I will continue to develop my relationship w the staff. I will continue to create a safe place to disagree & try new things.
-
You can treat Q8 as a slow chat question as you make your school climate & culture more positive this week!
-
And yes, to tell our story! ! https://t.co/ZhWJrT0f9M
