Good morning #sunchat peeps! Got the idea for today's topic from this awesome video - be sure to watch it. How cool to be in this guy's SS "classroom"? What do you do to make your classroom and lessons come alive? Time for Roll Call!

This video really inspired me to make my lessons come to life for my students. Looking forward to your ideas this morning1 #sunchathttps://t.co/JDLFObbJTL
I had an ESOL teacher take my Library comic books w $100 worth he also bought and had students write origin stories for their created superhero. They were encouraged to create names in their own language. Amazing creative writing! #sunchat
@susankotch posted a really cool video about this history teacher and how he uses hands on artifacts in his class. As a Spanish teacher, this concept is HUGE for teaching culture! #spanishteacher#sunchat

Derrick - glad a SS teachers joined in. Anxious to hear your thoughts on the video I shared. Are you often able to bring in artifacts for your students to see and touch? #sunchat@CrabtreeHMS
Morning- Emily from no- can't be on much today because I need to get this house on the market. I have a hands on opportunity for all of you: please help me paint and stuff. I'm not kidding, I'm struggling up here. #please#sunchat#noForReal
"Everything tells a story... I want to make a room where they want to come and learn." Thanks for sharing this example, Susan. Mr. Heilman's curated space reminds me of this book: Mr. Wilson's Cabinet of Wonders by Lawrence Weschler. #sunchat

As I'm here struggling get my house on the market basically by myself I have a realization- if I had more hands on, collaborative projects in school as a child, maybe I wouldn't be having so much difficulty to ask for help as an adult #sunchat
I wish schools had a budget for these types of purchases - just as important as a textbook, or more so, in my opinion. #sunchat I guess this is where private donations are so important.
I bring in a lot of different things that I have acquired on my own travels to Peru, Costa Rica, and Mexico. I also collect things that friends bring back from their travels. The students love to see hispanic toys, money, and food! #sunchat
So much more important for our rural schools or Title 1 schools, when trips and opportunity for getting out in person will be less likely. #sunchat Some schools won't even allow school pets now. :(
Plan to join #WhatIsSchool with @deem_ellen and me on Thursday, March 15, at 7:00 PM EST, as we take on "Dealing With TREACHERY, VILLAINY, JEALOUSLY and other Bad Things at School" #sunchat
Video was great! What an inspiration! I have some artifacts (really cool Depression Era stuff from my great-grandfather) but I teach early American history & it is hard to find things from that era. We get to visit DC & see artifacts that we learn about in class. #sunchat
Teaching ELA, I try to anticipate items that relate to books or stories that we read and scour garage sales all summer. This year, I'm in search for an old suitcase to accompany my lessons on Holocaust. Want to fill it with some belonging that would be confiscated. #sunchat
With technology, it is becoming more possible for "virtual fieldtrips" that give students the ability to see artifacts and experience the culture virtually. I think this paired with something hands on that they can touch and pass around is a great way to offer exposure! #sunchat
When I was in the classroom I felt like I was hoarder of science related materials so I could share ‘real stuff’ as they learned. I’m Admin now so I’m just a hoarder sharing ‘stuff’ as needed! #sunchat Can’t part with ‘stuff’!
Have you looked at Ebay, Derrick? I bet you'd find some things on there, or a trip through Virginia to a garage sale or two might yield some finds! #sunchat

I completely understand!! I am an admin of other Spanish teacahers. I can never part with things because I see the potential of my teachers using it in their classrooms to make the language and culture come alive!! #sunchat
I’m proud to receive such overwhelming support from the Greater Pittsburgh Jewish Community. I fully stand with Israel and will be a strong ally in Congress. #PA18https://t.co/yFENswvXCo
You can use online material if you have computers. But holding a comic book, manipulating things your hands is quite different from online. Both have value. #sunchat
My HS Spanish teacher dressed in clothing she would wear in Spain. Her passion for the culture and language made us look forward to her class. #sunchat
I have that book! I love using picture books to accompany the concepts. Boris ate a Thesaurus is great as well. But there is nothing like hands-on. That's why I like to use paint chips to help with descriptive writing. Touching something brings it to life. #sunchat
Social Studies and Science seem to have the best opportunity for hands-on. Us ELA and Math teachers need to use a bit more imagination, but it can happen. I used a model of a sailboat to help understand Gary Paulsen's "Voyage of the Frog". #sunchat
Often Ts are afraid to ask - he mentioned 70% of the items in his class were donations. Live by the @pat_croce idea of just asking - worst people can say is no #sunchat
If you put a call out to the community with a wish list of items, you'd probably get some great donations! But storage needs to be pre-arranged, and a way to curate so items can be found. But such a cool idea! I'd love to do it! #sunchat
I’ve used @SkypeClassroom to connect with museums and historians this year because trips, artifacts, and expenses are difficult to attain. Even though they cannot get a full sensory experience, it’s a great opportunity to do something amazing #sunchat
OMG yes! Talk about bringing the lesson to life! Allowing the student to dress up as well! It's just as impactful with teens as it is with Kinders! #sunchat
Thinking of moving and can’t even believe the amount of ‘stuff’ I have accumulated over the last 10 years. I keep it ‘just in case’ I need it someday. Reality is I prob don’t even know what I have or where it is so I will end up buying it again! #sunchat

Agreed! Many people hate to throw things out so they are stuck in an attic. They'd probably love to see it go to a good home, for a great cause! Social media would be a perfect place to connect artifacts with teacher-owners! #sunchat#thepowerofsocialmedia
Well, I'm inspired to put the call out for a wish list of items. I'll need to see if I can get some for my Holocaust unit. I have one newspaper from D-Day which the kids can touch and read. I need more! #sunchat An older neighbor found it in her closet, and I nabbed it.
Compromise idea: Reboot show-&-tell w/Ss bringing quirky artifact of theirs or family's to inspire storytelling. Tell own stories, trade objects or combine w/peers to imagine new stories, do research to reveal hidden stories. Artifacts then donated or taken back home #sunchat
You've helped the NRA boost their membership more than any one person since Charlton Heston because of your misguided smears and cyber bullying campaign against them.
A virtual tour? Not sure if Google has made that one or if there might be one on Ellis Island site-Felt the same way abt the Am Rev so I wnt to the Am Rev Museum in Philly myself-AND found a virtual tour on their website for my 4th grade class... sooo great! #sunchat@susankotch
These are tough times in education. Take care of yourself. Take care of your colleagues. Take care of your students. Together we can make it better. #satchat#sunchat
