Hello! Chad Ostrowski here, from Canton, OH. I work with teachers, schools and district sharing @thegridmethod and so much more to help them reach more students! #masterychat
Hello, I teach 4th grade in Hampton Roads. Lack of sleep and a long day of testing has me ready for bed but feel the need for a great chat LOL #MasteryChat
A1 Three things: Relationships must be authentic, intentional, & consistent to be lasting Ss can see when Ts are not fully engaged & that will affect the T/S relationship #masterychat
A1: Truly embracing and emphasizing with students' stories and passions. Pursuing "getting to know you" activities beyond a few days at the start of the year. #masterychat

Q1: Build relationships by showing kids who you are as a human - your family, your passions, your history - so that they are comfortable doing the same #masterychat
A1: by treating our students the way that we want to be treated.. with value and respect. When students act out, find out the why and go from there. #masterychat
A1 - Through honest, authentic interactions. Have fun, but be honest with students and help them find the information, ideas, and paths that make them feel like education is an authentic experience for them. #MasteryChat
Q1: I think the key with this is authenticy. Being who you are and celebrating who they are. That's when it's real and connection happens. #masterychat
#masterychat
Unforgettable teachers would instill hope and purpose in students' lives by walking the life- long learners' journeys together. Spark of joy in growing intellectually and emotionally will surely impact their lives. 💕
A1: CARE. You should care about their thoughts, feelings, interests, strengths, and who they are as a person. We are more than just teachers, they are more than just students. If you care about who they are, they know and reciprocate that respect. 😊✌️ #MasteryChat
lol. Barely. She technically has a profile but has made one tweet in four years and has 1 follower, lol. I keep trying to bring her to our side! She teaches at @MintHillMiddle in @CharMeckSchools!

A1: Personal story telling and minor comedy schtick is my hook in the beginning. From there it’s taking time, listening, and showing you care by the effort you give. And most importantly: LEARN THEIR NAMES! #masterychat
A1: Make the effort to really connect and get to know students. Be your authentic self, and then students will appreciate you more. A real relationship will emerge. #masterychat
A1- Morning meetings were HUGE for my class this year. We talked topics like conflict, perseverance, etc. It made everyone relatable, human, and comfortable to make mistakes! Great for classroom community & relationship building #MasteryChat
A1: Building student relationships starts with having an open mind. Each and every student is unique. Do not make assumptions about your students before getting to know them. Approach each student with a blank slate. #Masterychat
A1: Be patient, understanding, & compassionate, yet realistic. Modeling these are important for teachers, too. Making learning fun also helps to build strong peer connections and lasting positive memories! #masterychat
#masterychat A1. When the students know we are there for them and we are genuine in our caring, they understand it. JUST a few minutes in the day ,to spend with them and you own them for life
A1: Authentic and a day at a time. I am a firm believer that kids want structure and support they don’t want a friend that just gives them what they want. #Masterychat
A1 Start with respect and finding their humanity. Find out who they are in non-academic settings so that you can reach who they are as learners ! #masterychat
Q1: Build relationships by showing kids who you are as a human - your family, your passions, your history - so that they are comfortable doing the same #masterychat
A1: To make a lasting impact, we, as teachers, have to care. We need to focus on creating those positive relationships and foster that love of learning with our Ss. #masterychat
A1: I find that using their NAMES as often as possible helps those relationships bloom & leave a lasting impression! We all want to feel known, loved, and valued as important to the community! #MasteryChat
A1-if we want unforgettable relationships, we need to be unforgettable! Make that personal connection and be the best teacher they ever had. #masterychat
Q#1- I give out my email & phone number on day 1. Then I promise to answer queastions ASAP. Then I spend 180 days doing everything I can to live up to that promise! #masterychat
A1: My plan was to loop with my SS for the next 2 years. Well, that changed, I’m going from 6th to 8th. I’ll see my kiddos from this year in 2 years now, can’t wait to see how they have grown!! #masterychat
A1 See students for who they are in that moment, without preconceptions or stories of who they have been in the past. Get to know them as they begin a brand new chapter of their lives in your classroom #masterychat
A1: When we ‘check in’ with Ss about something they shared with us, they will know we listen to them and in turn they matter. This is a building block for impact #masterychat
A1: Make the effort to really connect and get to know students. Be your authentic self, and then students will appreciate you more. A real relationship will emerge. #masterychat
A1: By doing more than saying "hello" and "see you next time." You need to invest in relationships, so they are worth something. Showing kindness, compassion, empathy, and treating your students like they are more than "just kids" as society too often does... #masterychat
A1: Be patient, understanding, & compassionate, yet realistic. Modeling these are important for teachers, too. Making learning fun also helps to build strong peer connections and lasting positive memories! #masterychat
A1: Exchange stories! I love sharing my story with students and finding out we have so much in common. THIS strong connections make us unforgettable 🙌🏼💕✨
#masterychat
Be yourself with ss, get ti know them, let them know you care. I worked with this young lady for 5 years in elem. Today she graduated HS. The connection and relationship is real! #masterychat
A1: You have to care and be you. My students know I'm only human & they see the mistakes, I'm never above admitting if I'm wrong, I always push them to be better & do better. Always support & encourage them. #MasteryChat
A1: Having a real, vested interest in knowing our students--knowing things about them that don't show up in their report card and cum file through real conversation and projects that let their interests and ideas shine through #masterychat
A1 We are present every day, time to interact with our Ss and those we see in the hall, has to be ongoing, build connections, support them, share our struggles and help them to push though theirs #Masterychat
A1 Start with respect and finding their humanity. Find out who they are in non-academic settings so that you can reach who they are as learners ! #masterychat
A1 Relationships are not built on grand gestures or declarations of a relationship. They are built on daily microscopically small interactions. Dropping pennies into the relationship bank bit by bit. A morning smile. A "How are you?" said with just the right tone. #masterychat
A1 Joining #masterychat for the first time. Building rapport with students is possibly the most important aspect of teaching, providing the foundation for all things to come over the course of the year. With rapport comes trust, room to grow, roon to fail, & incentive to try again
A1: If students sense you genuinely care, they will see it and the impact will last a lifetime. Of course the academics is also important and how much learning is going on. #Masterychat
A1) Take time to listen to them. It's easy to jump to conclusions and assume the worst. It's harder to listen with an open heart & an open mind. #masterychat
A1 I recently wrote a blog post on this very topic! I shared some simple ways to make lifelong relationships with students and families! Relationships are the real foundation for learning! https://t.co/4Rzof6jRQk#masterychat#champforkids
#masterychat A1 authenticity is critical. Kids can spot a phony. At the same time, sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone, meet them where they are, invest in knowing what makes them tick. Enjoy and appreciate who they are.
A1: I think the Ss enthusiasm with the events/lessons we plan drive the connection. Always try to do stuff they will remember 20 years from now. #masterychat
A1 Relationships are not built on grand gestures or declarations of a relationship. They are built on daily microscopically small interactions. Dropping pennies into the relationship bank bit by bit. A morning smile. A "How are you?" said with just the right tone. #masterychat
A1: Building lasting relationships involves making real connections. Attend Ss sporting events, art shows, or band concerts. Show your Ss that you care. #masterychat
A2: When the door to our classroom opens, we have the chance to offer hope, security, and acceptance to students who may not experience it anywhere else. Doing this creates a home for them #masterychat
A1: relationships with Ss are so important- more important than sometimes we even realize. I’ve learned that while I try to impact my Ss lives, in reality they impact mine just as much. I don’t have Ss for a year- I ❤️ them for a lifetime!#masterychat#LoveLiteracyLearning
#masterychat A1 authenticity is critical. Kids can spot a phony. At the same time, sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone, meet them where they are, invest in knowing what makes them tick. Enjoy and appreciate who they are.
If we want to be respected; we need to respect our Ss first...today's child is diff than what we were Ts need to give first to get respect #masterychat
A2- Give them a voice in how the class is run and designed. Make jokes. Have a laugh. Enjoy, or act like I enjoy, being in my own classroom can have a gigantic impact on my students' perceptions of my classes and how comfortable they are. #MasteryChat
A1: Start the day with personal greetings and circling up for a quick class share session. My students each share something important, a goal, and something they are thankful for every morning with the class. #masterychat
A2. I try to make my S's feel that they are always welcome in my room. Its OUR home. They can come in anytime they want. I have had kids come in to "cool off" and some cry in my office. Its their safe place. #MasteryChat
A1: As leaders we also have to build a culture that is collaborative and that values many voices. That is building a foundation of trust and relationship building #masterychathttps://t.co/cPIs6PAFAQ
A1: you learn about the kid outside of your four walls. What are their interests, hobbies, hopes, and dreams. When you take the time you truly learn about someone you build a foundation that can last a lifetime.
#masterychat
A2 My classroom holds my personality. As you can see from my Home page...it feels like a friends basement where comfort is essential to learning. #Masterychat
A2: I joke around with my students a lot. I think humor does a great job at breaking down walls. I chat about dinner plans we have and upcoming events. I have lots of posters with my personal interests on them to help show my "human side" #masterychat
A2- Alternative seating (couch & recliner) AND Ss choose their seat (as long as they sit next to different Ss and in a different location) each day. #masterychat
A2 - By creating a welcoming environment of mutual respect, engagement and comfort you can help your students relax and take advantage of the resources and guidance you provide for them #masterychat
A2: Instead of filling the room with pre-made posters, fill it with their work, art, and interests. Have them help you care for class plants or pets, and allow them to feel invested in the room. Make cleaning up a game instead of a chore... so many ways! 🙌 #masterychat
#masterychat A2. They are welcome to the room any time , my children know I can be counted on and they are ready to get a bit of moral lecture from me , I often hear " miss you are just like mom" .They feel safe to talk to me .
A2: Have students give input on classroom design, make students feel comfortable, and have them help to develop classroom norms and expectations #MasteryChat
A1) Keep learning more about your students everyday. That will allow you to not only form stronger relationships with your students, it’ll allow you to bring their interests/learning styles into your instruction! #MasteryChat
A1 Relationships are not built on grand gestures or declarations of a relationship. They are built on daily microscopically small interactions. Dropping pennies into the relationship bank bit by bit. A morning smile. A "How are you?" said with just the right tone. #masterychat
A2: Depends on home. For some of my kids, home is the place they want to be as far away from as possible. I would argue there’s no place like school and I try to make my room a space where all students feel warm and welcome in. #MasteryChat
A1 Tell them the truth treat them with kindness and respect demand their best effort support them help them fail forward believe in them listen like you mean it look them in the eye when you speak to them...trust them, and they will trust you #Masterychat
A2: We create a home in our classroom when we are able to bring together people with many differences and allowing them to find commonality among each other. #masterychat
A2: I put personal belongings on the wall, if kiddos draw pictures or write notes to me I hang those up too. I don't have much space, but what I do have I want the Ss to feel that it is theirs too. #masterychat
I couldn't agree more. They will forget worksheets, but they won't forget engaging & experiential learning experiences with a healthy dose of fun involved. #masterychat
#masterychat A2 hard sometimes, we are stuck with certain furniture. We work with what we have, we share spaces and my students learn early that they are free to use the space. We spread out on the floor or into open spaces. Wherever we can be productive and comfy
A2) Incorporate their interests and get to know them on a very foundational level. That will allow for strong bonds to form between you and your students! #MasteryChat
A2 My wife's favorite saying is #LiveLaughLove Its that philosophy that I try to put into my classroom Make it feel like home by laughing, living, and loving life w/my Ss #masterychat
Absolutely- they need to be done throughout the year and in meaningful ways. Especially as students get older, they have very little tolerance for trivial and trite getting to know you activities. #masterychat
Mi casa es su casa! At the beginning of the year Ss create visuals of things that are important to them... we discuss in Spanish then decorate our home for the year #MasteryChat
A2. By welcoming them when they come into class. I also give them the responsibility of the room. They can arrange how they need to to be functional as long as they take care of it, or just like (my) home, privileges must be earned back. #MasteryChat
A2: As a new teacher, I plan on incorporating some of my passions into the classroom such as Disney. I also want to incorporate some flexible seating and make the classroom feel as comfortable as possible. #masterychat
A2I think creating a classroom culture that is inclusive and without judgement is step one. In math, I work hard to reduce anxiety because so many Ss tense up when you even mention the subject. I also have fun stuff around the room that makes my physical space unique #masterychat
A2 I have it decorated, painted walls, quotes, student work, lights, animals and try to make it comfortable, yes I teach HS Spanish and STEAM, just love a welcoming space :) #Masterychat
A2-Have not yet done this but am really interested in exploring the idea of flexible seating-how can desks and chairs feel like home despite positive classroom atmosphere? #masterychat
A2: I would modify the question. For some, home is nowhere kids want to be. I would argue there is no place like school and I try to make my room as welcoming and warm (not temp, but culture) as possible for all students. #masterychat
A2 By making them know they are always welcome in my classroom. I also encourage them to decorate the classroom so it feels like home to them. #masterychat
A1. Building relationships the first day! My kids know that we are a family! We are each others cheerleaders and also lean on each other! These are our brothers ans sisters💕❤️💗#masterychat
Make it as cozy as possible: flex seating, pictures, lighting options. Let Ss have input as much as possible. We spend most of our waking hours in a classroom. Better enjoy it! #masterychat
A2 Clutter haha! My walls are covered in posters and student work, they can sit where they like, and they don't have to ask me for basic things like getting water or going to the bathroom #masterychat
A2: One of the benefits of replacing lectures with instructional videos and employing self-pacing is I am no longer concerned with students interrupting my class. I always welcome students and adults in my class without fear of breaking the flow. #masterychat
A2: I want to work on changing up some of my lighting options next year and getting student photos up and displayed (I've had the picture frames...) #masterychat
Hello #masterychat
Understanding what a students LOVES to do, and is GOOD at can really help you propel them within the content you teach them. In other words, clever differentiation tailored to student likes and abilities can help teachers be difference makers.
A2: Depends on home. For some of my kids, home is the place they want to be as far away from as possible. I would argue there’s no place like school and I try to make my room a space where all students feel warm and welcome in. #MasteryChat
A2 Let Ss have input in class procedures, setting expectations, organizing materials, and arranging furniture/seating. Give them a place for their things, hang their masterpieces, and respect their "spot" or personal space in the room #studentvoice#Masterychat
A2) Ensure students feel safe, secure, important, and valued. Also, Incorporate their interests into instruction and get to know your students on a fundamental level #MasteryChat
Hi all! Melissa from Atchison, KS. I teach 6-8 Soc Studies. Just dropped off my son at baseball practice, so I'm a few mins late. But always glad to see what you all can share! #masterychat#mschat
A1: Exchange stories! I love sharing my story with students and finding out we have so much in common. THIS strong connections make us unforgettable 🙌🏼💕✨

Have I told you lately how much I ❤️ you? I wish my own kids could have had you as a teacher, Cameron. You are ALL about the kids. Never change! #masterychat

A2. Home is where the heart is , visual content are very important in the classrooms (I have visual content in my office). Children love photographs that represent who they are. ASK THEM TO BRING A PICTURE OF THEIR LOVE ONE TO MAKE A VIAUAL WALL #masterychat
A2: My Ss know I’ll be by their side to motivate, encourage & inspire. I will also tell them what they need to hear- not just what they want to hear. I love them as if they were my own and want the best for them! I’ll do anything for them! #MasteryChat#LoveLiteracyLearning
A2 I have flexible seating, they take ownership by taking care of the room, class meetings to build relationships and nurture them, and they come in once the school doors open instead of sitting out in the halls. #MasteryChat
A2 I use Responsive Classroom and Morning Meeting. We work hard to create a positive culture. As a class we are having a hard time right now, but they know they are loved and we will find a way to get back on track #masterychat
A2: At my campus all classrooms are expected to have a reading center where students feel comfortable reading or working in a nice comfortable space. #Masterychat
Have I told you lately how much I ❤️ you? I wish my own kids could have had you as a teacher, Cameron. You are ALL about the kids. Never change! #masterychat

I love #FlexibleSeating. It has changed the climate of my classroom greatly. Honestly, it was more of a transition for me! I had to revamp my game! I would love to help if you are interested in chatting some time!?!
What are you most worried about? #MasteryChat
A2 I LOVE how many ppl have said flexible seating! I also carefully consider lighting in my room in terms of the physical environment. Other than that, the ability to Ss to move, go get water w/o asking, seek out what they need. It is all part of the "hominess" goal. #masterychat
A2: Create an environment where they feel safe, accepted, and loved! #masterychat Establish a space where everyone feels like an important part of the team! If they are absent let them know how much they were missed!❤️
Yep. This. Pretty sure most of my kids don’t want it to feel like home at all. They want it to feel like a place where a kid can be a kid (but not a Chuck E. Cheese). #MasteryChat
A student-centered classroom has definitely helped with classroom management. They take ownership of their environment. Now if I didn't get to something someone just does it or they write a note. #masterychat
A2)+ This year I've been incorporating a little bit of the mood meter/ Ss get time to think about & express their feelings. It also helps me as I get to learn what kind of a day they are having (at least at that moment). #masterychat
YES! That is where the real power of tech and modern education lies. When you change the fundamental ways we deliver content and students access content, you can transform not just the instruction, but also the environment! #masterychat
A2: Creating a homelike environment in the classroom: Ss feel comfortable allowing for learning to occur! Comfort is based on respect, mutual understanding, high expectations and a loving, supportive teacher. #masterychat
Flexible seating has changed my classroom environment for the better. There is a time and place for a seating chart, but allowing kids to make that small choice can work wonders in their work in class. #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat A2. This year, I had my students’ parents send in a family picture, which I framed and hung up on the wall. What an incredible impact it has made! I drew a portrait for one student without a family photo, and took a picture for another at a school event.
A3. OMG!!!!!!!! This one is hard to type. I have had the "dont do adult things convo" with middle school kids. It breaks my heart. But hopefully will make a difference. #masterychat
A3 First and most...LOVE your role as a teacher. It is not a job, but your life...Make sure you appreciate it every day...you are there for the kids! #Masterychat
A2: Walls are not covered with Ss work, but rather Ss Strengths. Ss completed Strengthsfinder quiz...Everyone brings value! @TheRanchAUSD team effort!
#Masterychat
A2- when I was student teaching, I learned the term “cozy spots”. I give the kids the freedom to work where they feel most comfortable. I hope that this freedom makes them feel more at home #MasteryChat
A2 Inviting students to bring in costumes and props from home to create a shared collection helped my students feel creative and build community, and led to more than a few laughs, when they were staging scenes from Macbeth. #masterychat
Don't you just love when there are so many great conversations happening that you can't keep up? It means there is AWESOME learning happening, too! #ILoveMasteryChat#masterychat
A3: Believe in yourself and the ideas you bring to the table. When we adopt a positive mindset in our teaching, it will begin to spill over into how we interact with Ss and colleagues #masterychat
A3: I sometimes need to check myself......especially this time of year at the end.......remember that patience is key! Some Ss are nervous about moving to the HS and/or not looking forward to summer. #masterychat
A3 - ALWAYS assume (even when the odds say otherwise) that students WANT to learn and have the best intentions in their actions. If you come from this place it will help foster more meaningful corrections and discussion that will help them grow and progress #masterychat
A3 - Ask students how they feel. Ask them about their day. Ask them about their successes and failures. Talk to them and be positive as much as you can. A bit of care and treating them like a human can go a long way. #MasteryChat
A3: They are only kids, learning & growinig. They come to us with the best the are adn we are working to make them even better. We all make mistakes & tomorrow is a new day. #masterychat
A3: I hit Twitter for some inspiration and Professional Development (reading) first thing each morning. My attitude gets adjusted and my brain gets going. Then I’m ready to face the day! #masterychat
A3 i do a 3-word meditation each morning...first thing when the kids get in the room. It grounds me, and sets my journey in a positive motion... #Masterychat
A3: whenever I’m feeling not so positive, I like to pay it forward in a drivethru or by doing an act for someone else. It usually re-sparks my positivity in my life. #masterychat
A2 Inviting students to bring in costumes and props from home to create a shared collection helped my students feel creative and build community, and led to more than a few laughs, when they were staging scenes from Macbeth. #masterychat
A3 Share your passions with your students, they ❤️ hearing about your life and hobbies. Use your passions as part of your teaching, keeps you upbeat and enthusiastic. I'm excited about things we're doing 😀 #masterychat
I always had plants in the room and tried to keep flowers on my desk. We had a class fish and used a plug in air freshener. Bringing nature inside made a huge difference. #masterychat
A3: reflect on all the good we see each day. Remember tomorrow is not promised. Keep in mind you have the chance to influence lives every day (good or bad). Find a positive outlet to relieve stress like yoga, weight lifting, running. Etc.
#masterychat
A lot of what happens to sour things is only temporary and will quickly be forgotten. Said it before but those prefrontal cortices are not online yet. Have a short memory. #MasteryChat
A3: Teach in a way that brings you joy. Put in a little extra time to have fun lessons, hands on experiences, and more choice for kids. If they’re excited, they’re focused, and you can be a positive facilitator. Also, take time for yourself! #MasteryChat
A3) Not take myself too seriously; give 2nd chances (more than once); just breathe when I need to; get enough sleep each night; eat very minimal processed foods;be the master of my thoughts & keep them positive. #masterychat
A3: I always make sure I have a smile on my face when I speak to others, especially my students. Be positive in your interactions with others. #masterychat
A3 Best practice...smile and laugh at life w/your students When they see us have joy, even when life is difficult, they will see you as an example #masterychat
A3: When I'm at my least positive, if I take a few minutes to chat 1:1 about random things with a kiddo or go out and play at recess with my kids...it reminds me why I have the best job ever. #masterychat
#masterychat the arrangement is pretty flexible. Kids get to sit next to and work with whoever they want. That changes on a daily basis. They all work on self paced playlists with video and @goformative, so I don’t teach in front of the class anymore.
A3. Never let the child that leave inside you “die”. Laugh with them, about something silly; talk to them when they seem frustrated; confort them when they are nervous. But more than anything LOVE THEM that need that everyday. #masterychat
This is awesome! Have an idea in mind and Not worried about it working! I only teach one class as the rest of my job is coaching others so the room is shared with four of us which is one barrier-just need to get it approved and get everyone on board :) #masterychat
A3: Staying positive in the classroom can begin in the morning. Start each day with Gratitude. I keep a short gratitude journal that helps me to begin each day in the positive. #masterychat
A3) Always remember, we are there for our students. They are looking for us to guide them, to be a role model, and to keep them safe.
Your students will always make you smile, no matter what!
#MasteryChat
A3 A teacher in my building starts the day off with a special motivational meme of the day This sets the positive tone for her class each period throughout the day! #Masterychat
A3: I hit Twitter for some inspiration and Professional Development (reading) first thing each morning. My attitude gets adjusted and my brain gets going. Then I’m ready to face the day! #masterychat
A3: Students in poverty rarely have positive outlets in their life. They travel through a world that is inundated with pain and struggle. Remember that for many of our students their classroom is the most consistent safe place they have in their lives. #masterychat
This! It can be expensive! Ikea has some really cheap pillows you can find and if you have a Marc's around you, they have some good, cheap stuff as well! It doesn't have to be fancy! #masterychat

@MrKaplanJK, @RaeHughart, @MsHoskinsTech
A3: I think you've got to constantly focus on the students and the wins that come ... find a win (big or small) for each kid every day. They are there!!! #masterychat
A3: stay open to collaboration, be supportive of your students and colleagues, call parents for the good things, integrate your interests and passions into your lessons, always celebrate the small successes #Masterychat
A3: Take time to recharge. Every fire needs fuel. Stoke your flame and make the choice to be positive! As I've said before, it's not always easy, but it's always worth. #masterychat
A3 Dont see it as a job, see it as a calling. Also because the Ss look up to us, we should try as much as possible to be Positive. Smile, have fun. #masterychat
A3 Look for something sweet amongst the sour! There is always some good to be found in every situation and every person! #masterychathttps://t.co/aaX19f4ist
A3: I try to bring sunshine to the lives of my Ss and colleagues. I make them smile, laugh, and remind them why I’m so thankful for them. It’s important to not only tell people but show them why they’re special! #MasteryChat#LoveLiteracyLearning
I did this too! Left a few post-it’s on desks before school started. Kids would then leave them for me. It was like our secret messaging system. #masterychat
I string christmas lights back and forth and back and forth so we do our work under starlight. :) The key is to use enough strings of lights that it is bright enough to work! so much better than flourescent lights! #masterychat
Exactly. Allow them those small choice humanizes the classroom from, to paraphrase Ken Robinson, a mechanized system with a specific place for every students to a human system where students choose their place. #MasteryChat
A2: so many great answers from everyone ❤️. Flexible seating, rugs, a rocket the kids built that is their clubhouse, mugs I bought for them to drink from during tea/knitting book talk, rug from home, light covers, etc. #masterychat
Not sure how I would explain it in an interview. But it's about a month left of school and my 3rd graders definitely consider this room their home. On their own they will do call backs to get their peers' attention, leave me notes, and Ask 3 B4 Me. #masterychat
A3: Frame all commands in a positive way. Instead of “johnny get to work” say “I really like how this group is on task and working together.” You’ll be surprised how it gets everyone else on task. I also thank my Ss for working hard at the end of every period. #masterychat
A2. I have tried to breakaway from a classroom and create a family room! Doesn’t really matter the room thiugh, what matters is the love ❤️that fills the room-
Dance party🎉❤️#masterychat
A2: I always greet my students and ask them about their day. I also use humor to make them feel at home. I still have former students who call me mom every time I see them walking in the hallway😊. #masterychat
A3 not gonna lie, some days really test your positivity. 😂 Love what you are doing, if you don’t, ask yourself why you do it. If you can, be an agent of change for the things you dislike. Find those pockets of joy, take time to step back and breath. #masterychat
Have a great rest of the chat #masterychat - see you next time, I have to jump over to co moderate #slpspedchat at 8:30 ET, feel free to jump over or share when you can.
Ah! Yes! Practicing gratitude each day is so powerful. Stretching it like a muscle to find, reshape and reframe even the toughest of times. It works! #MasteryChat
A3 Sometimes we don't feel so positive, but honestly for me, I am so happy to get the day started, to talk with Ss, to have new opps each day to make a difference, to learn w/Ss, have fun, laugh, #Masterychat
A3: When I am having a rough day, I go on Twitter to recharge. I also try to send positive emails home because that uplifts the spirit of everyone involved. I want to be seen as a light in others lives, and I want to be an encourager and not a critic. #masterychat
A3 Staying positive, for me, involves creating a setting where students can share their sense of humor; adults can model by finding humor in some aspect of the activity, encourage students to share their wry insights, and soon, everyone is smiling,or at least, relaxed #masterychat
A3 I need to take my few minutes at the start of the day to center myself, take a few deep breathes, & reset. The students don't care about how little sleep I got, how much my 13 year old rolled her eyes at me this morning, or how much it cost to fill up my gas tank. #masterychat
A3 often we start class by watching the Inspiring America clip from NBC Nightly News. We then use our Spanish to talk about our reactions and how the clip inspires us #MasteryChat
A3. Never let the child that live inside you “die”. Laughs with them about something silly, talk to them when they seem frustrated, confort them when they are nervous. But more than anything remember they are children so LOVE THEM that need that EVERYDAY. #masteryChat
A3: When I am having a rough day, I go on Twitter to recharge. I also try to send positive emails home because that uplifts the spirit of everyone involved. I want to be seen as a light in others lives, and I want to be an encourager and not a critic. #masterychat
A3+: I think it's also important to remember that kids don't necessarily know how to stay positive. They need to see us be real ... and positive problem solve. Especially our perfectionists and anxious ones. #masterychat
A3- honestly? Hold our teacher friends accountable. Every single one of us has those days and moments where we just want to complain. But when it gets out of hand, we need to say something. #masteryChat
A3) always bring the energy to your classroom or school. The best ways to make connections are high fives and fist bumps, with as many S’s as possible #MasteryChat
I always had plants in the room and tried to keep flowers on my desk. We had a class fish and used a plug in air freshener. Bringing nature inside made a huge difference. #masterychat
A3: I have read that studies show that “feelings of gratitude directly activated brain regions associated with the neurotransmitter dopamine.” Therefore, I encourage expressions of gratitude throughout the day. https://t.co/ceptJ9ovdT#MasteryChat
A3: I have read that studies show that “feelings of gratitude directly activated brain regions associated with the neurotransmitter dopamine.” Therefore, I encourage expressions of gratitude throughout the day. https://t.co/ceptJ9ovdT#MasteryChat
Hey Tiffany! I work for an awesome organization @BasecampNe , we support schools as they implement personalized learning. We coach teachers, provide PD opportunities, support school leaders as they build capacity, and do just about anything else we can to help! #masterychat
A3: On the advice of @kd0nn I have a “Positivity Folder” in my inbox where I keep #allthefeels. When the day goes sour, I take a trip through those messages. #masterychat
A3 I'm a believer in having short term memory. If I've had a difficult day w/ a S or a class, I need to forget it the next day. One teacher has shared this saying, "I've never seen this day before," to start your day. You can't hold on to negativity from past #masterychat
A4 Choice in how to intake information and how to process it. Not all people learn the same way, so we have to work WITH them to get what we want ....learning! #MasteryChat
A4: Teach them how to reflect! It’s easy to say, “Okay today we are going to reflect…” But does reflection look the same for every student? Do students really reflect after they’ve been given a grade? Do you give F2F feedback? #masterychat
A4 Give Ss Opportunities To Lead! When we are intentional at giving Ss a platform to lead they will become accustomed to leading Leadership is a developed skill #masterychat
A4: We need to put them in the driver's seat by giving them voice and choice whenever possible! Help them set achievable goals and encourage them to surpass those goals! #Masterychat
A4 It is about letting go and letting our students truly discover learning through self-regulation. If we are doing, we are learning...we should already know...It is our students' turn. #Masterychat
A3 remember that our Ss come in the door each day at their own expected level and we have to help them raise it instead of expecting it to already be there, read, meditate, or find some other healthy form of release, stay out of drama and the rumor mill #MasteryChat
A4: Creating S ownership by helping them to see that learning is creating their story. They are individuals and don't have to be like - (fill in the blank). #masterychat
A3) Definitely! Adding interesting classes or units really brings back the passion in teaching. And you never know when kids will flourish! #masterychat
A4: Providing time for students to share their hard work through a platform they choose. They get to be leaders in their learning. We do Genius Hour. #masterychat
A4) As students change they want more ownership. No more being the center of attention for teachers, but we need to ask big questions then allow students to plot out their own learning from there #MasteryChat
A4 - Using self paced mastery and @thegridmethod is a great way to increase student ownership and accountability where they control and own their actions, learning and success! #masterychat
A3: When I’m having a bad day or feeling down I seek out those who bring a positive light to my life!Often it is the students who lift me up! #masterychat
It's a technique I learned in grad school. I'm a school counselor. Cognitive Behavior Therapy focuses a lot on cognitive distortions - this is a great way to explain it to kids (or anyone)! If we change our thinking, we can change our behavior. #MasteryChat
A4: It is often through ownership that students become invested. I make it a point to plan and prepare units and lessons with my students with full transparency. Can be very eye opening! #masterychat
A4: I feel like I put a lot of responsibility on my students. I am a guide not a chauffeur to learning. I provide the basics, but I want them to make the deeper connections, since this is THEIR education. #masterychat@ERobbPrincipal@TechNinjaTodd@ToddRisser
A4 Voice and choice! Blended learning, hyperdocs, learning menus, reflection reflection reflection. I have seen my students grow SO much this year because I gave them a little more choice and voice in our class #masterychat
I’m a HUGE fan of using video presentations! My students invest so much time and energy into these projects because they get to make decisions and problem-solve every step of the way. #projectbasedlearning is my key to student investment #MasteryChat
A3: With testing coming up next week I keep encouraging my Ss to do their best and TRY.
A 5th grader (past S of mine) came by my room and I asked how testing went...He replied, "I tried."
Then I had him share that with my class. #masterychat
A4 Student voice and choice! Ownership of learning, and the opportunity to show/share learning in a way Ss chooses! Empower them to be the captain of their ship #masterychat
A4 - Choice in their learning. As @GingerLewman told me, be the resource, not the source in the class. My best days this year were where I was able to just answer questions rather provide direct instruction on content. #MasteryChat
A4) Teach how to self-reflect & encourage Ss to constantly do that; frequently check in w/Ss to assess their needs; Promote a growth mindset & let Ss know they are the masters of their learning. #masterychat
A4: transparency of learning expectations leads to tracking of growth/mastery which leads to student ownership w them choosing how they’ll show what they know. #masterychat
I agree wholeheartedly! When we help our Ss develop their leadership skills, we set in a motion a chain of events that is truly unstoppable! #Masterychat
A4 Give Ss Opportunities To Lead! When we are intentional at giving Ss a platform to lead they will become accustomed to leading Leadership is a developed skill #masterychat
A4: Be sherpas, not gatekeepers of the knowledge. Guide your students, encourage them, honor and celebrate their mastery and success. Be their cheerleader and coach, empowering them to believe in themselves. Cheer them on! #MasteryChat
A4) Let students lead the way! Allow students to lead the lessons you teach by incorporating inquiry-based teaching techniques. It will allow for higher-order thinking and for them to own their learning #MasteryChat
A4: Give Ss agency as to how they will demonstrate their knowledge. Make learning about "Their process" to conquering a problem or struggle. #Masterychat
A4. I teach only through self paced playlists, video and @goformative. I don’t teach in front of the class anymore. Ss are responsible for their own learning and I spend all day meeting with small groups and individuals. See how I do it: https://t.co/z2PKoPpJwR#masterychat
#masterychat A4 students need to be allowed to take risks ,fail and be resilient to stand up get going again.i accept my mistakes infront of them, never hesitate to say "sorry" and keep nudging them to move on.they know it's ok to Falter and they know they need to reach the END
A4: "You didn't master this.....yet! But you will. And if you're willing to keep trying, I'll be there to support you the whole way, because I care about you and your success." #masterychat
A4 I have been using @Seesaw this year. Ss are making choices about which pieces to record. They own their portfolios and love getting feedback from me and their families. #masterychat
A4: Allow for remediation, a constant learning loop of clear feedback and encouragement. Push for the removal of grades to intrinsically motivate, rather than demotivate. #masterychat
Isn't it awesome to see that shift?
Even better- answer their questions with questions and REALLY see that ownership fly into the students' hands! #masterychat
A3. BE HAPPY! Enjoy the time with your kids💗 Time is so precious and the year just flys by! I am cherishing every minute I have with mine! Make lots of memories💗❤️. Academics will come and go but the time with your family is priceless! You can’t get that back!
#masterychat
A4: provide them with the appropriate scaffolding to empower them to work successful and independently.
Best student quote this week: “I didn’t think I could do it, but I did it!” ~ Carly, K-student
#masterychat
A4 Also teaching Ss how to set goals and break tasks into parts they can master some of these skills need to be taught/modeled in order to build that autonomy we are truly hoping for #masterychat
A4: In my room, Ss learn through Transdisciplinary Problem Based Learning. #TPBL Every 2 weeks we have Ss presenting their work product to the class (and as many outsiders as I can find). #masterychat
On some big assignments, students give themselves an effort grade. I do the same based on my observations. The two scores are averaged and that is half of the total grade. Good for students with disabilities. #hardwork#effort#masterychat
A4: Allow students to evaluate you. I give my Ss the chance to give feedback on their experience and how clear I have been in my teaching each week. We have grown quite a bit together this year! #masterychat
A4: Give students a voice and allow them to choose. Not every student learns in the same way. Be responsive to their needs and be okay with giving them the reigns at times. They will astonish you. #masterychat
A4: Encourage them to take risks. Teach them how to be problem-solvers. Show them how to collaborate with each other. Give them time to explore. #masterychat
Hmm. I think I know someone who is pretty good at that...
(Hint: It's Rae)
(Hint 2: #teachfurther)
(Hint 3: She will talk your ear of about it if you let her)
#masterychat
Agree...I frequently have students "present" their learning to the class. This could look like Ss at the whiteboard explaining how to solve a problem or at my desk and working under the doc camera. #masterychat
Great idea! I read recently of a T that has a blank sheet of paper at the back of every test and allows Ss to write anything related to the topic that they know but was not asked about. #Masterychat
Exactly. Give them ownership by asking them how they would solve the issue or reframing the problem with an additional question. Sometimes it is just the spark of a question that ignites the ownership. #MasteryChat
Self-reflection has been such an amazing tool this year. Before, it felt like something I "should" have students do because it's an easy wrap up, but my students have gotten so much out of it that I can't imagine them not reflecting! #masterychat
A4 Helping students shine is the source of great joy for educators; Why not strive to teach them the fundamentals, give them the support they need, foster character development, & help them transfer energy into action towards some sort of meaningful goal with impact. #masterychat
A1:I build relationships w/kids by getting to know them.Having lunch w/them.Playing w/them at recess.Going to their events outside of school. Being real w/them. Being honest. Telling them my successes/failures. Apologizing to them when I make a mistake.♥️ing them. #MasteryChat
A4: Let them help you plan ... put them to work thinking about how and what they want to learn! The planning alone covers so many needed skills! #masterychat
A4 I encourage self-evaluation and setting goals. I also like to see how they can relate what they're learning to our everyday life as well as tying in what they love. #MasteryChat
A4 S ownership comes when you stop doing it for them. When you stop giving them answers & allow them to believe they can't learn it. Ownership comes when you design learning experiences that move at the S pace- even if that means a different pace for every S! #masterychat
Pay it Forward has been a game changer for @TheRanchAUSD Ss. They struggle. They collaborate.
and know they bring value to each other. Refine and make better!
#Masterychat
A4: By holding them accountable for their own learning. My teachers are expected to go over CBAs and benchmarks scored with each student and students are expected to graph their own progress. #Masterychat
A4: Student ownership comes to life when students can control their own pace and are expected to achieve mastery before progressing. Success becomes dependent on their own self-efficacy. Metacognition becomes a natural part of the learning process #masterychat
Yes! My students created an awesome video about mythological creatures for a #geniushour project AND learned how to edit video and apply sound filters! #masterychat
A4: we have to know our Ss- their desires, passions, strengths, areas to grow. . .this helps us encourage them to take a lead in something they’re interested in. We need to learn to be by their side but allow them to step up & take charge. #MasteryChat#LoveLiteracyLearning
A4: Unstructured play time has really let me see my kids shine, build new ideas and learn from each other (it's my favorite part of the day) #masterychat
A4: Encourage them to find their passion and create goals. Support their interests and help them understand that it takes hard work and sacrifice to reach those goals!🙏🏻#masterychat
What a great question! Joyful spirit is so contagious! Start each day with a big smile, greet each student with warmth, and engage with passion for learning. Kids love "happy" teachers!! ♥#masterychat
If you try to be positive 100% of the time, you will be a terrible parent, teacher, boss, etc. because you wlll be a fake polyanna if you do that. You will have no respect from the people who you are in charge of. #BeReal#masterychat
We call our class our school family. We love each other, support each other and celebrate each other’s successes. We also have WOW Weekend every Monday where students can share something that brings us all a little closer together. ♥️ #MasteryChat
A4: project based learning. Show me what you know or learned through your talents. Really cool read to add to the topic.
https://t.co/SV9XZqJFkX#masterychat
A4. Empower our students! Give them choice and voice! It should be about our kids! They should be in the driver’s seat of their own education! #masterychat
A4:Giving work that can be applied to the real world makes a difference. Do project/inquiry work, give your Ss choice, allow them to do exciting work in math-plan a trip for time, look for houses with area/perimeter-meet your standards by teaching important things! #MasteryChat
Agreed! My Ss r only 6 & 7 years old, but once they learn how to self reflect, it really does make a difference. The key is consistence and checking in on their progress. #masterychat#asfg
A4b) this podcast from the @TeacherCast is great student ownership! Asking them questions that they can explore themselves and make them think puts the ball in their court to drive their learning #MasteryChat
Bingo! Yes they need to know we trust them to be able to tackle these issues, because we equipped them with the essential skills and background info! #masterychat

@MrsBarnett_Tchr, @ERobbPrincipal, @TechNinjaTodd, @ToddRisser
Self paced and project based, but add in the publication element - blog instead of essay, YouTube instead of sharing on Google docs...get it out there. #MasteryChat
Exactly. You know who was positive all the time? The parents in the Willy Wonka movie. And what did they create? Bratty kids. Nobody wants that. #masterychat
A5: I have had multiple students say that I get very loud when I teach history "but not in a mad way." They think it is weird at the start of the year how excited I get about history, but by the end I get some nice emails from Ps excited that their kids love history #masterychat
A4 Plan lessons based on student interest and strengths. The best lessons are when my Ss say they had so much fun they didn’t realize they were learning! Make it relevant. #MasteryChat
A5: Make strong connections and try new learning strategies like project-based learning. Ask students for input and allow for peer collaboration, too! #masterychat
I recently began writing my #HeardItFromHankins to help myself & encourage others to stay on the positive path. I also started #ThankfulThursday & pass out sticky notes to both staff & students to spread positivity. Today, I was “calling out” others for good things! #MasteryChat
A5: We need to model being a life-long learner committed to reading and writing. I always ask teacher candidates what they are reading. It's one way to see what they love! #Masterychat
A5 - Genuine excitement for your content and putting your passion into everything you do. BE AUTHENTIC, let your students feel your excitement! #masterychat
A4. give them the tools to grow and own their work. Listen to the story behind that and praise them every success BIG OR SMALL remembering them that Super heroes come in EVERY SIZE #masteryChat
A5 Our Passion must be real. If it isn't, our kids will see right through it. We need to genuinely live our teaching and make our passion contagious. #Masterychat
A5: Students fall in love with content that teachers love to teach. Don’t be afraid to be the #1 fan of what you teach. The passion we have for our content can often spark passion in our Ss like wildfire #masterychat
A5: Be enthusiastic. Be a continuous learner. Allow the students to be the EXPLORERS of the content— just because you love it doesn’t mean you should play the “look at how intelligent I am” game. Be patient. Give feedback, and be excited about their learning. #masterychat
A5: That's an interesting one. I think if you love something is just shows - whether you want it to or not. I suppose the question is about how to love teaching even when the topic may not be your fav. #masterychat
A4: My wonderful students do an amazing job or articulating the impact of blended learning and self-pacing on student ownership in this video #masterychathttps://t.co/v5mjXojTTV
Q2: I've seen a lot of people say it: a community approach to the classroom is important. Give students input on how the classroom is run, decorated. Set expectations with them. Give them a say on assessment & learning. Encourage them to set expectations for you. #masterychat
Shane Elkin from Cincy/NKY it has been great following tonight’s chat. Lots of GREAT educators giving great input/feedback. I think being real and enjoying our students is important. Remember be you...I’m old and a little crusty but it works for me. You guys ROCK! #masterychat
It is not fake... I truly love teaching #Math. Not because it's Math... but because of the moment a student realizes... They totally got this! #Masterychat#TeachFurther
Mine are 14-15 but many have never been asked to reflect before. They thought I was crazy! We reflect all the time now and that has led to some wonderful conversations (especially when it was time to choose classes for next year) #masterychat
yep...As I prep my students for state testing I let them know that the test will be long and ugly. However, since there is not getting around it the only thing they can do is their best. It's my job to give them the strategies & skills. #masterychat
A5 - Today I was working with a few students and we were discussing world issue and I talked to them about where I have been and were I know people. They asked me how I did these things in my life and I said teaching. All of them said that want to be teachers now. #MasteryChat
A4 create a climate where S voices matter and where Ss feel safe taking risks. provide choice, guide them to ask better questions, release control #masterychat
A5: I love finding songs that relate to what we are covering in math. I am not afraid to be a little silly and take healthy risks that will help students learn. I feel like passion rubs off on others, and Ss can tell if the teacher is truly devoted. #masterychat
A5: For me it is more than the love of what I teach, it is the love of who I teach. I truely care for all fo my Ss and I hope it is through that they realize the love of what I am teaching is important also. #masterychat
A5. I’m a recovering English major who realized early in my career that few students would “love” literature and writing the way I do. So, I aim for “appreciation” which also honors the students’ preferences for other subjects. #MasteryChat
A5: Interact WITH your content alongside Ss. When they see that the assignments we give them are important enough for us to do as well, they will see the value. #masterychat
And those are the days you spend some time in the car reflecting and figure out how to transform that opportunity into a future success. I still do this regularly. All about turning losses into wins! #waledchat#masterychat
In reply to
@timlriley, @ERobbPrincipal, @TechNinjaTodd, @ToddRisser
A5: Remain current with instructional practices, always speak with kindness about our profession, and BRING IT (passion, excitement, energy) to the classroom each day. #masterychat
A5 I have to be honest, I am not sure how to teach without demonstrating a crazy excitment & enthusiasm for what I teach. I don't care what the topic is, there is something beautiful about it- some interplay of events/phenomenon that make it magical. FInd that. #masterychat
I wish I had had you as a math teacher! Drill and kill killed any hope I had of doing math quickly (or well) so i don't do it now if I can help it. You're changing lives, Rae! #masterychat
A5 If you are excited about the lessons your teaching they will be too, it's contagious 😀 School should be fun and exciting, kids should be afraid to miss something #masterychat
A5. Love what you teach but more than anything LOVE WHO YOU TEACH. That is the only way that we demonstrate that WE LOVE TO TEACH THEM no matter the subject. #masteryChat
Right! They have to be taught how to do it. Once they learn, it becomes a powerful tool. How lucky they r to have you to teach them the power of self-reflection! #masterychat
Perfect. Exactly. Give it to them straight. There are some who would say you are wrong for doing that because it sounds negative. Not true. Be positive when you can. Real when you have to be. #Masterychat
A5 Perhaps the ideal is to do what you love, love what you teach, teach what you know, know when you don't have the answers, and all the while, facilitate students' journeys so they can discover their passions & find purpose in their learning. They may remember that #masterychat
A5: my Ss know that I not only have a love for reading but a passion to see them succeed. I am honest with them and share my stories of success & failures, we have real discussions about real topics, we create a family & count on each other. #MasteryChat#LoveLiteracyLearning
A5 make it fun, interesting, relevant, and get a little geeked out when you are working with kids! They will see your passion and they will become curious! #masterychat#champforkids
Be enthusiastic about your content in whatever delivery format. Show we continually what to learn more about it. Encourage related side projects and student discovery of material. #MasteryChat
A5 Tell them about somehting cool that just happened in your field, let them see your eyes light up when you cover that topic near and dear to you heart, encourage THEM to bring you new factoids #masterychat
The best learning comes when Ss have the opportunity to teach themselves! As #TeacherOfTheDay (chosen via @Flipgrid), Miss Torres decided she wanted to create her own game to teach her peers about contractions during small group. She calls it “Contraction Action”! @KirkElementary
A6: Ss may not remember a specific lesson, a grade they received, or a project they were assigned, but they will never forget you. When our WHY is centered around Ss, the impact we leave will last. #masterychat
A6: In the end, they won’t remember your assessments or decor or lessons, but they will remember how you made them feel. Students should ALWAYS be your why. Student rapport should overpower everything else. #masterychat
A5: show excitement and joy when you teach or talk about what you love. When kids see you are excited about something, they can’thelo but be excited too! #masterychat
A6: Try going across the country without a map. If you're like me, you'll end up at a gas station about 30 miles outside of town wondering what year it is. It is important to have direction and purpose so you can guide Ss to theirs! #masterychat@ERobbPrincipal@DisruptedTv
A5: I would agree yes u love ur subject but honestly there are parts of social studies that bore me. However, students would never know because I love learning. When I taught I made it a game to put on the best performance I could for my consumers.
#MasteryChat
A6 Our "why" defines us It show what we are here for When we live a life of #ThisIsWhyITeach it will leave a lasting impression on our Ss In the end Ss will remember relationships & our "why" not our curricular area...my opinion #masterychat
A6 - There should be a reason for the learning in our classrooms and students should be aware of that at every level of learning. If you cannot understand how this applies, then why learn something. Although learning for learning's sake is awesome too. #MasteryChat
A5 I tell my Ss all the time how I think what I'm teaching them is so cool. I explain how our content relates to current events, that stories I hear/read are related to a topic, & I show pics of my travels to place that we're learning about. I live Soc Studies! #Masterychat
#masterychat A5 everyone loves a story...I tell & weave stories.that works even from my elder ones. They hear the stories & then analyse or give inputs and discuss.
I also am one of the learners in class .sometimes my kids take over the class & I sit back.they love the empowerment
A6: Knowing our WHY helps us to set a foundation that influences how we teach and interact with our Ss. When our foundation is strong, our impact will endure. #masterychat
A6: Your "WHY" centers you; centers your purpose. It should be revisited frequently so you remember the purpose of your service and your interaction with the students. Your "WHY" helps you innovate your what to target your Ss! #Masterychat
A6) Knowing the, “why” for anything always furthers learning. It allows your students to ask more questions and to be hungry for more learning.
It fosters lifelong learning!
#MasteryChat
A1 This year we begin every class with what I call "café". Students speak in French about anything that means anything to them...it gives them a chance to struggle through the language learning process in a positive, meaningful way. Game changer! #MasteryChat
#masterychat I am so upset I missed this chat! I will definitely catch up with all of the comments and advice. This is one amazing PLN full of unforgettable educators!
A6 Knowing your WHY and remembering your WHY each day should help keep you in a positive mindset. Everything we do should be about the kids #masterychat
Constantly reflecting on one's practice (and the system at large!) allows for the continued flame of passion to burn. It keeps us energized, intense, and engaging! #masterychat#restorehumanity
A5- I have always been a strong reader and poor mathematician. My students know this, but they also know that I am so open to learning to be better and learning new strategies that my “weakness” gives them the safety to make mistakes right along w me! #masterychat#vulnerability
A6 The WHY drives the HOW and helps you reach all of your Ss. When Ss see WHY something matters, WHY you teach, WHY they should love learning, they know that they have support and can conquer the world #masterychat
A6) The “why” for me in every lesson or discussion is really what helps me guide. It could be for the Ss or for building understanding or for making connections. If I don’t know why, the kids won’t either - that’s when you lose engagement. #masterychat
A6: I was just reading an imprint that my Ss made me. It had 142 messages and brought tears to my eyes. When I am having a rough day and losing sense of my purpose, I look at that and realize that I am making a difference one child at a time. #masterychat
A6. Knowing why will keep the passion for educating, mentoring future generations to think and solve even the most mundane problems, not to mention the societal problems they will help solve. #MasteryChat
A6) Our Why drives our mission. It helps us stay driven on what we do and how we do what we do. Without a Why we won’t have a purpose for all that we do #MasteryChat
I use #TeachFurther Themed Internships sponsored by Local Businesses to learn. I will always remember the student that connected with me years later having earned his first job with one of our 6th grade sponsors... #LiveChanging#masterychathttps://t.co/FhScdHgRRo
A6: Ss are my why. Having the senior invite me to her graduation and thank me for everything I did to support her more than 6 yrs ago tells me that keeping my Ss the why makes all the differenece. #masterychat
A1 This year we begin every class with what I call "café". Students speak in French about anything that means anything to them...it gives them a chance to struggle through the language learning process in a positive, meaningful way. Game changer! #MasteryChat
A6: "The why" I feel like I need to take @EMercedLearning in on this one. The why determines the path and choices I make to make the best learning experience for my kids. #masterychat
A6 The WHY drives the HOW and helps you reach all of your Ss. When Ss see WHY something matters, WHY you teach, WHY they should love learning, they know that they have support and can conquer the world #masterychat
A6: I've shared this on Twitter before, but having Erin Gruwell (Freedom Writers) as an instructor was a game changer. She lit the fire and helped me articulate the "Why." I've never forgotten my why. #masterychat
A6) I feel my purpose as a T is to help make this world a better place. I do this by helping Ss understand the beauty & the issues in our world. Why read if you do not read to lunderstand our world? Why write if u do not write to improve the world? #masterychat
A6: Being able to state the why has to start with me. I must make sure I have one ... then I know that I can anchor that to something that's meaningful. Once that's clear, sharing with students becomes an organic conversation. #masterychat
A6 This year I have been able to see many former Ss. They are in High School and have been working in our building. I love when they share what they loved about being in my K or 2nd grade. Also some 5th graders have asked to visit my class during Fun Friday. #masterychat
A6: Knowing the why behind your choices and actions means you’re being intentional. Being intentional involves working to reflect, adapt, and be your best - which is what our students deserve. #MasteryChat
A6- our admin asked us our “why” at the beginning of the year and then posted it in the workroom. Seeing my answer on a daily basis is a reminder that every choice I make should be toward that goal. I know this directly impacts my attitude w my students. #masterychat
A6: Knowing our WHY helps us focus on WHO we are helping, WHAT needs to happen, HOW we plan on accomplishing this, WHERE we need to look for resources, and never lose sight even when it seems impossible. #MasteryChat#LoveLiteracyLearning
A2 I try to give students their own space. I always refer to it as OUR classroom so it gives them ownership. I let them vote on EVERYTHING, which makes them feel so empowered. #MasteryChat
A6 If Ss are our why they will feel the impact of our love, our encouragement, and our expectations for many years to come! The key is keeping them at the top of your priority list and remaining focused on them! #masterychat
A6 Knowing our purpose will help students discover their own. A group of fmr students recently shared their written feedback on a controversial issue at our fmr school. I was so proud to see how they worked together constructively & productively to offer solutions #masterychat
A6 I think it's impt to understand that while *I* love history & geography, some Ss might not. So my WHY needs to show them that they can apply ideas & skills from my class to things that they are interested in #Masterychat
A6: For me, knowing the “why” motivates me to be the best teacher I can for my students so that I can impact them as individuals and also as learners and leaders of the future. #masterychat
#masterychat A6 I know my WHY .I make it my annual mission to help Ss acquaint with their WHY so they know WHAT WHEN WHERE to act and HOW to reach the set goals .we set goals every term and revisit frequently.that helps them stay focused
A6: Knowing our “why” ignites our passion that carries over into our classroom and, more importantly, impacts our students. If they feel it, know we support & love them — they’ll believe they can do anything & want to learn from you. ♥️

A6 Your why gives you purpose, and maintains the core of what you do. My why is always about igniting a love of science with Ss like my idols did for me #masterychat
A6 this amazing senior presented her Capstone today. She shared that I instilled a love of language and culture ...she will be attending PC, my alma mater and minoring in Spanish #MasteryChat@rkraeger
Q6: Knowing our why anchors us, gives purpose to our action. Knowing why helps us set expectations, orients our reflection, gives purpose to our action. Without it, we risk leaving our actions to the whims of others, without a guiding philosophy #masterychat
A5:Getting stupid geeky over stuff....and relating it to the world outside of class. And when I say super geeky, super cheesy with memory devices, songs, and memes help too. #masterychat#dontbeafraidtobesmart
@RAMiddle_RAMS check out tonight’s #masterychat for some amazing ideas on what it takes to be an unforgettable teacher! Really inspiring to help get us through the last few weeks of the school year! #RAMSinspire#A5instruction
I love this response!!! It’s so important we understand our OWN potential and passion in order to support our students discover theirs!!!! 🙌🏼💕✨ #masterychat
A5 again, it’s about authenticity. I truly love what I teach, most of the time and the dryer, less fun bits drive me to be creative so I am still enthusiastic. Hooks, simulations, games, bring your energy, get them excited, when they’re engaged that’s all I need. #masterychat
A3 It's so hard when you have 25+ students walking in and out of your classroom every 40 minutes, but I try to make it a point to speak to each of my students 1-on-1 each class. It doesn't happen every day, of course, but the way their faces light up is priceless!!! #MasteryChat
Thanks everyone, this was an awesome chat, feel free to reach out if you’re looking for ways to implement personalized learning in your school! #MasteryChat
A6: We demonstrate our “Why” by showing our students how important they are to us each day! “People don’t buy what you do, they buy “Why” you do it!” -Simon Sinek #masterychat
