Good morning from the Dominican Republic where the waves are still pounding us - more damage to our north coast than with the hurricanes in September.

Hi all, My name is Sarah and I am a student teacher in New Zealand and I have to participate in a few twitter chats as part of an assignment. I hope i keep up! #BFC530

I taught homebound for seven years, it takes true collaboration to make the home school connection work, both Ts must work together, along with parents and team Ts to ensure Ss get their needs met! I loved teaching homebound! #bfc530

I've been asked to send work to homebound students over the years via email or prepare an envelope to send home. I've never had one that did the work or sent anything in. Too sick maybe? Not sure what scenarios have Ss homebound but still well enough to complete work?

For our homebound kids, they hire a teacher to go to the student's home for 5 hours a week, in order to deliver assignments and teach new material. This hired person uses the lesson plans of the teacher(s) of record. I do not feel like this is a very good model to use. #bfc530
Good morning everyone! No snow days here, we have Online Learning Days! T required to provide 15-20 minute lessons/activities and have 2 specified ‘office hours’ over the day. S have 3 days to submit wrk on return to school. No make up days needed. #bfc530
welcome Sarah! You read what you can :) Most folks just lurk in our first chat, maybe retweeting what we find useful. But if you're so inspired - respond to folks too.
What course is this for?
#bfc530
I actually haven’t had students home bound for more than a week or two. I send home work if requested, usually just math, sometimes it gets done, sometimes not. #bfc530
Homebound is tough because there is a teacher assigned to them ... in the past we have given work, but much of it was not completed while they were out. #bfc530
We receive a request for work from the teacher who will be doing the home instruction. Sometimes it is difficult, especially if Im leading group work or the lessons are based off simulations/games we are having in classroom #bfc530
That’s too bad, Ss on homebound, regardless of why, need to stay connected to their learning, homebound and lead teachers must work tegether to find a way to communicate and exchange materials regularly! #bfc530
I don't think a teacher has a responsibility to give work to a students who are housebound without the encouragement of the parent or guardian.

About 90% of my classwork is available through my GoogleClassroom ... but I will be honest, it is mostly accessed by kids in class and not from home. Parents don't even look at it. #bfc530
We haven’t had a successful model for this- currently we have absent folders for kiddos and they pick up their work when they get back or their parents pick it up. No time to teach the lesson to an individual unfortunately #BFC530
Maybe this is a difference between elementary and secondary. As a HS ELA teacher, I frequently had a student or two out for an extended medical leave. #bfc530

Maybe in my case the in-home teacher just took over the teaching? Not sure. I certainly never granted any credits for those Ss as evidence of learning was not coming in. Just assumed they were too sick / unable.

As the Kindergarten is not mandatory in Ontario, parents can choose to keep their children home until grade one. It can be a significant adjustment without the K experience, however. Some use day care or a bit of home schooling instead...relatively small number. #bfc530
Classroom Ts responsibility to provide work and grade. Assigned Ts role is to teach lesson and provide support. This keeps the student up to date with what is happening in class and allows the grading to be consistent. #bfc530
When we had a student Homebound they Facetimed with kids, but that was more social than school related ... i think the tech is there, but the system is not using. If you're homebound do you really want to be linked to class everyday? #bfc530
That seems to go along w/one of my greatest pet peeves, when a request comes from home to send work in advance before they go on vacation. You prepare something only to discover none of it is completed. Learned the lesson never to give work in advance quickly #bfc530
We receive a request for work from the teacher who will be doing the home instruction. Sometimes it is difficult, especially if Im leading group work or the lessons are based off simulations/games we are having in classroom #bfc530
#snowday Sad that the weather is keeping me in, but #grateful to have time with my #bfc530 community. All of you help me feel connected when I am stuck inside. #thankyou
A: I taught a home bound in the past. I received the work from the teacher and acted as a facilitator to the S. Lucky for me she was a great 4th grade student who had broken her leg and things were pretty easy. #bfc530
In my district, if the homebound teacher requests work, then I am required to provide it as the classroom teacher. Same for evaluation tools. It's not my choice to decide if I'd like to or not. #bfc530
It seems the teacher is expected to do all the hoop jumping while the kids get to enjoy their vacation ... and still get the time to make-up the work. I now say ... "check GoogleClassroom" ... they don't #bfc530
In teaching Gr12 Studies of Religion, I often had school leaders in my class who would be absent from time to time. I got into the habit of making an MP3 recording of my lesson, which with the notes for the class, was added to the class Google Drive Folder. 24/7 learning #bfc530
Yes, I had an okay experience with this when I taught hs. Was more #pbl. Now? It would be very challenging for me to "give" my material to someone else. #bfc530
When I had a home bound student, her classroom teachers were offered the home bound job as well. I did it along with two other teachers, so most of her classes came to her and she was able to jump right back into school when she returned. #bfc530

Ugh yes. This usually happens when I get requests for work when a student is sick for a few days or goes on a vacation. I typically don't get completed work back. But it's very difficult for my special ed students to complete work without any instruction #bfc530
The request for work in advance also makes me complete work that I didnt intend to do until the following week, creating a stress on my time to alleviate the stress of a family going on vacation while school is in session #bfc530
Have a great day, everyone. And for my northern snowbound friends, stay safe & warm, and enjoy your day “off”. I know you’ll be doing school work, as it never ends! May you all have bright sunny days soon! #bfc530
Agreed...not fair if it turns out to be some kind of ‘penalty’ for the teacher...nor is it, necessarily productive or useful, as you have described. #bfc530

Yep! See my post about recording the lesson for them. Technically they could Skype in and join in from home. The technology means worksheets are unnecessary. As Dr Marcia Tate @drmarciatate says “worksheets don’t grow Dendrites!” #bfc530

Wow, I have had only positive experiences as a homebound teacher, our system is effective and when Ss get back to school, they are right on track! #bfc530
Same. We do a lot of PBL & exploratory learning - no lessons to send home. Makes it hard. We try to come up with alternatives for Ss, but they definitely don't learn as much #bfc530
Communication would be such a huge part of this. Such a huge change in learning if its only for a short period of time. Children might not respond positively to a change in teaching style. #BFC530
We had a student out of school conquering cancer a few years back, and he attended classes via robot that roamed the halls #bfc530https://t.co/J8stXsTI3v

It is and you do attempt to communicate effectively with the homebound instructor, but time in the day including the ability to meet with a common planning time, or even through email is always a challenge #bfc530
I believe that communication is key for homebound students. Although there may be numerous limitations and restrictions, the teacher should have a positive and willing attitude to connect and provide the means for the homebound student to succeed. #bfc530

Out of respect for the situation, yes. It may be different for an elementary school teacher who has a contained classroom, but for me, the guidance counselor will reach out to see if the child is able at that time to even complete the work. Always case by case #bfc530

I used Voice Recorder on my Samsung Galaxy S5 & a $10 Lapel Mic which records as a WAV file.Upload it to Dropbox or your Google Drive, from which you download it to the App ‘Voice Record Pro’ (affordable) on my iPad to convert from WAV to MP3 & upload to class Google Drive #bfc530

Oh ok. We do not have home bound teachers where I am from so I guess its a little different. Does it feel like you need to do more when a request comes in? #BFC530
In regards to this model, I believe that it is so important as the teacher to create a community like culture where the homebound student can also participate in this community, just in a different form and time. Inclusiveness of all students despite their circumstances!#bfc530
It's extra work for sure to put together a package to send home. These days I use Google Classroom to post work and Khan Academy for practice problems so I tell Ss to follow along online. #bfc530
I totally understand. Is it normal to work with the same home bound teachers? And do you get any notice when a child is required work to be sent home? #bfc530
My son was in homebound on and off for 6 years. It was not a great experience and just added to the stress of his medical condition. I'm not sure that there's really a good plan for chronically ill students. #bfc530
My work is available without request ... there are official channels when a kid homebound vs I am just going to be out for a week. Also a difference for the why a kid is homebound #bfc530

I feel there is more we can do for these long-term homebound students, but we are strapped for resources and time to do it (which should not be an excuse). #bfc530
May I ask how it was not a good experience? Was it that the teacher wasn't willing to assist actively, or was there a lack of communication? Or something else? #bfc530
The homebound system works great when there's a qualified T providing home instruction and a school T providing work. Any break in the chain creates problems. #bfc530
Yes! When at Parent Student Teacher interview the P asks what more you can do, let them know that the child can access every lesson any time, 24/7, esp.preparing for exams.A great feedback tool, when you listen to yourself. You suddenly realise how you must sound to tSs. #bfc530

That sounds like you have it sorted! I do wish more teachers in NZ used those tools for home bound Students. Instead of just sending home a worksheet. #BFC530
Good morning #bfc530 My 2cents - Elem Ss who go on vacay and ask for work often don’t think about school or work until the last minute-if at all-which results in minimal effort Better to catch up when they return. Home bound Ss are a very different story.
In our district, the classroom T provides work until a student has been officially designated as requiring home instruction. Then, a T from the district’s home instruction list is hired to teach them for 5 hrs/wk for up to 6 months. #bfc530
Q🤔: For homebound students, what is the classroom teacher's responsibility versus the assigned teacher's responsibility in your district?

Via @MrTravisDrake#BFC530 🌅🌄
There were many issues. Often, we got Ts not able to teach the material. ie K-1 T trying to tackle HS material. He was also expected to take exams at school in evening, even though his health was fragile. #bfc530
Sad that it seems like since most schools only have a few Ss on home instruction, and only for short periods of time, one sees how flawed the system is... #bfc530
Wow, it sounds like that would have been an extremely difficult time for both your son and the rest of the family! I can see how there really needs to be a seperate plan for homebound students that are chronically ill! #bfc530
We are required to provide work until a long term solution has been found. Often better to prioritize compulsory courses for graduation like English or Math; not b/c the others aren’t valuable but more b/c electives are easier to make up once a S returns to school #bfc530

I agree - same in HS. I taught English, so last minute vacation requests often resulted in providing the next novel to be read & a promise to work w/ them upon return to catch up. Home bound Ss were a little different, but I would still use a novel to keep them on track #bfc530
As happened in class, incl.Qs, Discussions, etc. Editing on the fly in class. Pause used when Ss were doing their work, group or individual (prevents dead space&file no bigger than needed), if the discussion was sensitive or a S requested a pause. Ss were 17yo. #bfc530

Classroom T gets any handouts together passed out in class and home bound T gives and collects. Bc it’s hard to find Ts comfortable with math, I love using YouTube as a resource to give all Ss an opp for help outside of class. Either develop a playlist or produce your own #bfc530
Huge perspective shift since I teach math and we have pressure of hitting certain standards before end of year and SAT heavy. What a world of difference this would be! This made me more excited for work today. #bfc530
Yes, homebound instruction needs to be a coordinated team effort to meet the learning needs of the Ss, wherever they are! Schedules, due dates, assessments, projects-try to keep the S up to date! #bfc530
Morning, #bfc530. This is rare where I work, though absences are certainly familiar as stepping stone to home-bound instruction. W/daily slides & folders of increasingly digital materials, communicating w/assigned T or absent S feels easier than it used to, presuming tech access.
