  • ksuding Nov 13 @ 8:34 PM EST
A1: Obvious reading looks like eyes facing toward text...which more often than not brings upon the "it's cheating" when thinking of accommodations. However, it looks like me driving in my car and accessing auditory text via audiobooks. #PatinsIcam
  • danielgmcnulty Nov 13 @ 8:34 PM EST
A1: ā€œreadingā€ to me ā€œlooksā€ like someone or something decoding information and assimilating it into existing knowledge/information. #PatinsIcam

Q4: How can teachers support tactile readers? #PatinsIcam
  • ksuding Nov 13 @ 8:40 PM EST
A4: T can have specialized format Braille for Ss in a TIMELY manner. (same time as peers) Tactile books can be created to support learning. This can be done with 3D objects/textures within the reading. #PatinsIcam
  • ss4122 Nov 13 @ 8:40 PM EST
A2: Reading to me is making meaning from content. That content can come from many different forms. #PatinsIcam
  • danielgmcnulty Nov 13 @ 8:40 PM EST
A4: One big thing Ts can do is to make sure that braille textbooks & materials identified and ordered as far in advance as possible! This can take months sometimes. Use the ICAM web portal to order: https://t.co/3ayUgBRVvJ #PatinsIcam
  • kellygrillo Nov 13 @ 8:40 PM EST

A5: using the auditory channel to read via recorded voice or electronic voice #PatinsIcam
  • danielgmcnulty Nov 13 @ 8:43 PM EST
A5: Reading w oneā€™s ears is very different that just listening. Itā€™s very involved and complex and can often be much more complex than visual reading. It has to be taught explicitly, not just assumed that an audio book given to a S will solve all issues instantly. #PatinsIcam
  • JulieHKuhn Nov 13 @ 8:43 PM EST
A5: Listening to books but may also have visual cues, such as highlighted words and sentences/paragraphs. #PatinsIcam
  • punkspeced Nov 13 @ 8:44 PM EST

A1: Reading can also be interpreting art (graphic novels, paintings, etc.). It can also be figuring out body language and facial expressions. Is it bad that Iā€™m stuck on Q1?#PatinsIcam
  • danielgmcnulty Nov 13 @ 8:44 PM EST
Yes! Could be human recorded voice OR synthesized voice and BOTH have their place! #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @BevSharritt
  • ksuding Nov 13 @ 8:44 PM EST
A5: Auditory reading often referred 2 as reading with your ears. I HIGHLY suggest that we ALWAYS connect that term 2 "auditory reading" 2 advocate 4 change of lang & acceptance 4 accommodations for Ss especially written in their IEP. MODELING is a powerful movement. #PatinsIcam
  • JulieHKuhn Nov 13 @ 8:45 PM EST
Q6: How can teachers support auditory readers? #PatinsIcam
  • danielgmcnulty Nov 13 @ 8:46 PM EST
A6: Ts can ID Ss reading strengths w/a tool like uPAR, ID needed formats in IEPs, order needed accessible dig. text and/or audio as specialized formats of textbooks & core materials, and teach all Ss ways of utilizing Text To Speech on the devices they already have. #PatinsIcam
  • punkspeced Nov 13 @ 8:46 PM EST
A5: Using your ears to access the knowledge a book or audio file has to offer! #PatinsIcam
  • BevSharritt Nov 13 @ 8:46 PM EST
A6: make text and tools available for them to read auditorily, public library downloads, providing text to speech tools that may also combine auditory with visual (highlighting) #PatinsIcam
  • ksuding Nov 13 @ 8:46 PM EST
A6: Audio formats all instructional materials. Also by classroom discussions as to how we ALL retain info in different ways. This can create a culture of acceptance & nonjudge w in the classroom. Ss often will not use their accommodations if feel like they look diff. #PatinsIcam
  • JulieHKuhn Nov 13 @ 8:46 PM EST
A6: Provide materials and opportunities and earbuds. #PatinsIcam
  • PATINSSandi Nov 13 @ 8:46 PM EST
So many things need to be taught thoughtfully/explicitly. It is easy as an educator to forget what our students don't know. #PatinsIcam

  • JulieHKuhn Nov 13 @ 8:48 PM EST
Q7: What is visual reading? #PatinsIcam
  • danielgmcnulty Nov 13 @ 8:48 PM EST
A7: Visual reading is probably what much of the general public typically thinks of first as ā€œreading.ā€ Itā€™s using oneā€™s eyes as the initial way of decoding information/symbols. #PatinsIcam
  • ksuding Nov 13 @ 8:48 PM EST
A7: Visual reading is decoding the text with ur eyes and make meaning of what u are decoding/reading. #PatinsIcam
  • PATINSSandi Nov 13 @ 8:48 PM EST
A7: Decoding and comprehending visual information. #PatinsIcam

It made a big difference for my daughter when her dad and I read Harry Potter aloud while taking boat rides. She became really engaged as a life long lover of reading. #PatinsIcam

A7: Visua Reading is the ā€˜readingā€™ everyone thinks of. Using your eyes to decode a text. #PatinsIcam
  • JulieHKuhn Nov 13 @ 8:50 PM EST
A7: Reding with eyes, may be accompanied by tactual and auditory cues. I whisper to myself or interact with characters when I visually read. #PatinsIcam
  • neal_at Nov 13 @ 8:51 PM EST
We R constantly looking 4 times when we can incorporate #3D & tactile materials with Ss reading. Math, science & social studies often are written so visually that our BLV Ss could miss out on key concepts. When introduced we find ALL learners gravitate towards them. #PatinsIcam

Q8: What are your favorite resources to go tofor reading materials for tactile, auditory and visual readers? #PatinsIcam
  • ksuding Nov 13 @ 8:52 PM EST
A8: Allowing Ss access to the text if being read aloud to in a group. Having the ability to track the words and follow along will improve comprehension skills. Also, make sure u have your CLOSED CAPTIONS on all videos. #PatinsIcam
  • JulieHKuhn Nov 13 @ 8:52 PM EST
Q9: How can teachers support visual readers? #PatinsIcam
  • kellygrillo Nov 13 @ 8:52 PM EST
A7: Visual Reading can be tracking with another person reading text if students are so dysfluent that it labors the process, this is a great scaffold when building in grade level fluency. #PatinsIcam
  • BevSharritt Nov 13 @ 8:53 PM EST
A8: adjusting font, spacing, size, colors, filters. Allowing students to determine optimal positioning of materials. Sometimes masking for distractions, or highlighting to help with tracking #PatinsIcam
  • danielgmcnulty Nov 13 @ 8:53 PM EST
A8: Ts can ensure that font, contrast, background color, font size, are all adjustable, even for more ā€œtraditionalā€ visual readers! All learners have preferences and those preferences can change from day to day. Give Ss control of those settings. #PatinsIcam
  • ksuding Nov 13 @ 8:53 PM EST
A9: In Indiana, I feel the most valuable resource for reading materials in specialized formats is our Indiana Center for Accessible Materials aka: ICAM https://t.co/xtEH5ItVwu #PatinsIcam
