Weekly chat for excited 1st grade teachers who love to learn and share ideas. Participants are interested in a variety of topics including literacy, math, technology, play, inquiry, and being the best educators they can be!
Happy Sunday & Daylight Savings Day! It's time for #1stchat. I'm Val from Michigan and I'm excited to learn more about Engineering with guest moderator @mflicek1 tonight! Please be sure to follow @mflicek1 so that you can see the questions as they are tweeted.
Hello #1stchat friends! I'm excited to learn with all of you tonight! My name is Michelle and I teach in Green Bay, WI. Let's start with some introductions!
The barrister at Starbucks this morning gave me the best laugh. In response to an error in my order she said...It's not your fault or my fault, it's the days fault. #daylightsavings lol #1stchat
Hi, I’m Deb and I teach in De Soto, KS. Moved to from 5th grade to first this year. #1stchat has been recommended to me a lot, but it’s my first time joining in.
Throughout tonight’s chat, I will be referring to the Engineering Design Process(EDP) as the steps of Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve. You may use a variation of this process. #1stchat
A1: My school is a STEM school with a focus specifically on the engineering piece. We have been using the NGSS standards for 3 years and have created integrated units that have engineering focuses in each. #1stchat

Students are always full of questions and curiosities and if the "ask" piece is emphasized and exciting for them, they'll be intrinsically motivated to do the work for the rest #1stchat#PSUElemEd

A2 We do a STEM challenge quite a bit. I try making my students go through this process. In the past, the project took plan & create. Adding improve make ss think deeper and teach them to keep improving their product. #1stchat
A2: When working on any project/activity, have Ss stop to think about what they are going to do and make a plan before the creation part. Very important. #1stchat
Yes! The "Improve" phase makes some ss uncomfortable because they associate it as a failure or not good enough. I teach them to always keep wanting more for themselves! #1stchat
A3: One of my favorites goes with our economics unit. Ss design products they end up selling at an Family and Friends Economics sale. SOOO much fun, engaging, uses the EDP, and we raise some funds! #1stchat
A3: In my practicum I've observe a "Genius Hour", where students come up with any question, and over the course of 6 weeks or so they work to answer that question. Some make cookbooks, some make catapults! #1stchat#PSUElemEd
A3 We love #kevaplanks and I have connected design projects with literature. Ex: The Relatives Came by C. Rylant. Ss work in groups and design and build a home to accommodate the guests using #kevaplanks#1stchat
Yes, I agree. Improving for a purpose/reason. For example: my Ss are testing bridge designs for strength, need to improve to make them stronger. #1stchat
Love that! #1stchat Adding the type of engineer that creates bridges (civil engineer) and the type of bridges could bring even more engineering to the lesson. #1stchat
A3: During our light/sound unit, our final performance task is creating an instrument using the EDP. They also create one at home to compare the two. Our rubric includes a part about how well they went through the EDP to make their instrument including improving. #1stchat
So excited to introduce my firsties to google docs tomorrow! Shared a rubric with each of them through google classroom & linked their Flipgrid videos. They will watch their video & score themselves before I score them.
#digitalfirsties
I love that book! Used it last year and hoping to get to it this year. Also doing a Geo Show virtual field trip about the Brooklyn Bridge tomorrow! So excited! #1stchat
A3: Building bridges out of spaghetti, popsicle stick bridges, building boats out of straws & tape, making towers out of pipe cleaners & other supplies, protect the balloon astronaut, get the ping pong ball down the "zip line", etc. #1stchat
We did a ton with creating "tactile" songs that we could feel using pitch and duration. Ss used ribbon or balls and placed them high or low on a paper so you could see the pitch. Hard to explain. I'll get a picture for you tomorrow. #1stchat
A3 This was another favorite. build the tallest tower with planks that will hold a pumpkin. Ss did a great job reflecting and improving on this one. #1stChat
A3: Just introducing different types of engineers is a great, quick way to add some engineering to your days. When talking about sound talk about an acoustical engineer, bridges: civil, etc. #1stchat
A2 Using more Academic choice and project based learning. It would need to be explicitly modeled at first and I think math might be a great place to start #1stchat
we also did a lot testing sounds with paper towel tubes and rubberbands on boxes to hear the different sounds and use materials to dampen the sound. #1stchat
@mflicek1 It would be wonderful to invite parents who are engineers as a profession to speak to our students, especially female engineers. Would be great for students to hear about engineering careers. #1stchat
A4 I love using @scratchJr for creating games, retelling stories, math problems and creating science concepts. It takes a lot of planning and trial & error. #1stchat
A4: last year Ss used bulletin board paper and lots of recycled items to build setting for KEEP ON by Deborah Hopkinson and then coded the mouse to travel the course to North Pole. #1stchat
You read my mind! I have a parent from last year that was doing a FB video series on women in STEM. I want to see how we can bring this into the schools more. So many jobs in STEM and its important to introduce to Ss early on. #1stchat
When I was the director for Camp Invention we did a Camp at the Fiat Chrysler Tech Center in their innovation lab. It was an awesome experience. Students were take on tours of the facility including the wind room and below freezing temp room where cars are tested. #1stchat
Ugh:( It is a really great resource and I believe you can get your first year free. It's amazing because it aligns to the NGSs perfectly for each grade. Highly engaging resource. #1stchat
A3 Creating 3d shapes with coffee stirrers, toothpicks, and clay. Students always jump in to create, then get frustrated when it doesn’t go as well as they thought. I need to spend more time on modeling the planning phase before Ss touch materials #1stchat
I'd love to see that! We did a virtual field trip on Thursday to Komodo Dragon Nature Preserve and I learned so much! @GeoShow is a great place for virtual field trips. #1stchat
A4: used the code and go mouse for retelling Emmanuel’s Dream Ss cheered on Emmanuel as he ran the course. Powerful story. Ss added scenery with #kevaplanks so great group project. #1stchat
That is very important. Takes time, but I always make sure they do it. Nothing fancy, just draw a sketch and write the materials they are going to use. Imagine: I like them to draw a few ideas and then bring it down to the 1. #1stchat
A4: I think anything you do with @WonderWorkshop Dash robots is very engineering focused, Ss have to solve a problem to get the code correct. Lots of improving when things don't go right. #1stchat
A4 Tech has been very limited at our school. I haven’t even touched coding. I know they do some in the computer lab. This is an area, where I need some PD. #1stchat
We’re just starting to use ours that we recently got through @DonorsChoose . I love them, wanting to integrate with our measurement and/or mapping unit. #1stchat
A5 I know it is corny but the 3 pigs I used to be each 2nd and we used Foss kits- one of our kits dealt with creating bricks. So I would always bring in the 3 pigs #1stchat
A6: I have started Maker Mondays. I chose an item for the week or a project (this week leprechaun traps), on Monday they draw their plans, then throughout the week, partners work in our Maker Space to create their plans. #1stchat
