@txhsfbchat Lurking, but got my fancy diagrams & psycho cut ups ready to go just in case @CoachDubMaddox gets a little crazy on 3rd down tonight. #txhsfbchat

Jake Timmerman OL coach @ Northside. I was fortunate enough to get to meet our host @CoachDubMaddox at Atlanta Glazier clinic. Great stuff! #txhsfbchat
Welcome @CoachDubMaddox! Looking forward to talking 3rd downs and how defense that can get off the field on money downs help win ball games! Adam Harvey, DB/ST, Cibolo Steele here. #TXHSFBCHAT
HSSocialMedia : RT txhsfbchat: Welcome to #TXHSFBCHAT for the best time to connect and learn with your fellow coaches sponsored by Sky_Coach https://t.co/nnkyzsdTgI
A1: I guess it has to do with how much confidence you have in either side of the ball, if you’re offense has been moving the ball great all year then you don’t prepare for as many and if your defense has been stopping offenses in their tracks then you prepare for more #txhsfbchat
Dustin Altmiller, OC at Benbrook High School. Fired up for tonight. Have been researching and learning everything I can about @CoachDubMaddox R4 system. #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: Offensively 5-6 all depending on down and distance. Defensively 3-4 all depending on opponent tendencies and how we want to attack them. #txhsfbchat
A1:
The national AVG of 3rd down offensive snaps per game is around 15. Our dispersion rate AVG for each field zone is seen here. We use these #'s to assign play ratio to the following 3rd D&D in each zone.
#TXHSFBCHAT
A1: 4 concepts for Offensive scenarios & 4 concepts for Defense. 1) 3rd Short - Ahead 2) 3rd - Long Ahead 3) 3rd & Short Behind 4) 3rd & Long Behind flip it for Defense #TXHSFBCHAT We do not have medium as a Veer Team.
Q1: Offensively: How many 3rd down concepts do you game plan for in game?
Defensively: How many 3rd down packages do you game plan for in game? #TXHSFBCHAT
Our Wednesday practice is third down situations for O/D we work each situation. Take 3 runs, passes off those runs, and 3 drop backs. Carry 2 screens. Defensively carry 1 "special package" for long yardage situations on third down. Rest we base off tendency from film. #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: We want to do everything we can on 3rd down based on down and distance. We are not going to sub package too much unless we’re facing a tempo team who subs prior to the play. #TXHSFBCHAT
Q1: Offensively: How many 3rd down concepts do you game plan for in game?
Defensively: How many 3rd down packages do you game plan for in game? #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: O - It will vary based on what they like to do on 3rd down with the distance for a first down. We want to make a call that our guys feel confident running that gets the ball in our playmakers hands. Thinking players not plays. #TXHSFBCHAT

A1) Defensively we always took into account distance and field position based on film breakdown... Used this chart/ system we developed at University of Central Missouri... https://t.co/P9xhuiqtC5#TXHSFBCHAT
A1: Our film study will dictates how and where we bring pressure on 3rd down( we will bring pressure!) Generally, we will carry 6 calls and then have a formulated plan for an offenses response to what we’ve shown previously. #TXHSFBCHAT

A1) O: to be honest, I’ve always based 3rd down concepts for games off what my Q can throw consistently at practice during the week which may very. Usually 4 or 5
D: generally 3-4 packages based off what the kids did well at practice. #txhsfbchat
A2: If we can stay in base we will. If we have to switch it up, we can blitz or adjust and play an adjusting front and coverage. Bottom line is not to overthink it and continue to put ourselves in position to play fast without thinking too much. #TXHSFBCHAT

#TXHSFBCHAT
A2 OFF) We always have certain "coverage" beaters deeply ingrained in the QB he can check to when seeing a certain look. So even if unexpected QB has tool in his utility belt to find success. Tempo (no huddle or freeze) also helps #txhsfbchat
A1: That's a BIG "It Depends" answer - who we're facing. We rep multiples in practice sessions - platooning helps. Could be as few as 3 base RPOs to as many as it takes. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2:
The R4 system helped us to determine the five 3rd Down Situational Scheme Families that can be used by defenses. This provides a checklist of the most common unforeseen situations that an offense must prepare schemes for on 3rd down. #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: I always stay in a bend but don’t break defense, preparing my defense to adjust to the formation rather than changing mine, know alignment and assignments, same thing for offense, lineman having different calls for fronts #txhsfbchat
Q2: Offensively: How do you prepare for unexpected 3rd down schemes not seen on film?
Defensively: How do you prepare for unexpected 3rd down concepts not seen on film? #TXHSFBCHAT
Dang...3rd downs aren’t that big of a deal in sixman, seeing as how we usually go for it on 4th down anyway...so I’ll prolly be a creepy lurker for the most part tonight, lol
A2: We start that preparation in the spring and continued through August. We have our OL practice against every front everyday. There usually not a front they haven't seen and are comfortable blocking any front. So we will call base plays to keep it simple #TXHSFBCHAT
A2) Defensively we were always of the mind that if they were doing something that we did not see on film, that we were taking them out of their comfort zone... and everything we did defensively was always solid... #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: O - We want to do what our guys have confidence in. We will do our bread and butter plays whether it’s our runs, RPOs, passing game, or screens. #TXHSFBCHAT
Q2: Offensively: How do you prepare for unexpected 3rd down schemes not seen on film?
Defensively: How do you prepare for unexpected 3rd down concepts not seen on film? #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: we like to go uptempo on third down and manageable. I think it keeps the defense from throwing something exotic at us and we can do our best plays with one word calls, so we're calling our best plays too. Keeps us from over thinking and getting too "cute" #txhsfbchat
A2O: 1. Be in formations where defenses are generally giving 1 or 2 looks (compressed/many gaps work best) 2. Work 1-2 favorite concepts with route tags/adjustments to "match" coverages. With few concepts, we are able to practice it with more depth and understanding. #txhsfbchat

We have a package of formations and plays for each of these formations going into the season. We have these ready to use in any game even if we haven't seen them on film. #txhsfbchat
A2: if your base scheme is sound you should be okay against the unexpected - Wooden original "Dinosaur" speaking Offense. Defensively - keep all six shots in the Colt Revolver - be prepared as if we are terrible & opponent out to embarrass #TXHSFBCHAT Book Wooden Ch 3 :12-24 Amen
Q2: Offensively: How do you prepare for unexpected 3rd down schemes not seen on film?
Defensively: How do you prepare for unexpected 3rd down concepts not seen on film? #TXHSFBCHAT
A2- don't usually use practice time for unknowns but as a coach will keep adjustments in mind if the time comes. Always want to gain that plus 1 offensively and make sure we align correctly on D out of our base, and adjust from there. #TXHSFBCHAT

A2: Communication/system checks - hate to burn a TO, trust your guys. DL coach is a big proponent of not chasing ghosts, but we do take time each week to throw in a few plays of "how would we beat us" #warready
A2) o: prepare vs film 90%, prepare vs ghost 10 %. IMO, all O coaches must understand defensive structure. Once you do, you can generally dictate alignments with formation.
D: real game adjustments are crucial. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: (offensively) we will run our base plays until we can adjust to what they are doing to us. I also like to self scout (A LOT), and try to break tendencies #TXHSFBCHAT
Our defense looks at favorite plays, along with consistent 3rd down concepts that we see repeatedly & then we game plan to stop those plays. Typically we bring 4-6 3rd Down packages into a game, with some variations if needed. #txhsfbchat

Basing out of Quarters coverage & having built in formational rules for setting the strength helps alleviate a lot of issues if the offense comes out in something funky. BTF blitz packages help adjust too. You are never out of alignment. That is the key. #TXHSFBCHAT

We always have 3 calls based on D/D and field zone... one base/ vanilla, one with a first level stunt, and one with a second level stunt/ blitz... again based on film tendencies and on call sheet... https://t.co/P9xhuiqtC5#TXHSFBCHAT
A3 Off) We may have QB change slide call on 3rd for player/field/bound/ based on 3rd down tendency but keep it simple, let QB be comfortable where hots are, where he is protected. #txhsfbchat
A3) Defensively we always have 3 calls based on D/D and field zone... one base/ vanilla, one with a first level stunt, and one with a second level stunt/ blitz... again based on film tendencies and on call sheet... https://t.co/P9xhuiqtC5#TXHSFBCHAT
A3: depending on the D&D, do they need a short yard, or deep ball to get yards, either way keep yourself in a position to rally down if they do complete before the first, and if they need short, maybe a man to man in CB and have the LB sit for crossing routes #TXHSFBCHAT
Q3: Offensively: Do you game plan pass protection adjustments for 3rd down? Example?
Defensively: Do you game plan blitz adjustments for 3rd down? Example? #TXHSFBCHAT
A3) We will scout tendencies and rep the crap out of their favorite 3rd down blitzes every day in practice but as far as changing the actual protection for 3rd down no we don't #txhsfbchat
A3: Not a lot of blocking adjustments except for max protect. Every blitz we have has a counter if you pay too much attention to one then we'll throw the counter at you. #txhsfbchat
A2: Unless you're got a wizard 🧙🏽♂️on the sidelines - trust your base O. If base doesn't acct for 3rd and whatever, Adjusting to 1-offs for 'unexpected schemes' is a good way to turn the ball over. #TXHSFBCHAT
A3) We have game planned against specific blitzes. For example, we knew a team brought OLB on all Jet motion. So we threw Hitch right behind the pressure. Normally we just rep the blitzes we have seen during Blitz Pickup drill with OL, RB, QB. #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: We study when/where/how a team wants to come from so we make the best call. We want to put our guys in the best situation to execute the game plan. Want to raise to the level of our training so we know what to do. #TXHSFBCHAT
Q3: Offensively: Do you game plan pass protection adjustments for 3rd down? Example?
Defensively: Do you game plan blitz adjustments for 3rd down? Example? #TXHSFBCHAT
Q3: No, pass pro is best when simple, but you practice blitz pickup & 'bogie' calls during the week, but either way you're gonna pick up 5/6 at the most. Fundamentals are more important on 3rd down than scheme. #TXHSFBCHAT
A3) Absolutely when you know the blitz packages that the defense likes on 3rd down you can have your screen packages ready and your quick game.
#TXHSFBCHAT
A3: We use R4 Rush Grids as a “hit” chart to diagram & pin point when, where & what blitzes are being used. Next, we use “scheme sheets” on the back to determine what protection & adjustments will be needed against specific pressures for 3rddown.
#TXHSFBCHAT
Really like this - we had a similar look with some variations if they shifted formation, and depending on the distance a blitz check as well. automatics = less thinking. backer spying RB, and a d1 corner sure helped with the isolation backside. #txhsfbchat
A3: We are an UC - I Back #BuckleUpPeckerwood Veer Team LOL Passing is a adjustment for us. We play in playoff weather that blows literally 55 mph gusts & rain sideways- run the darn rock -Dinosaurs #PunchF why lift if you are asking OL to dance Wooden Ch 7: 32 to 49 #TXHSFBCHAT
Q3: Offensively: Do you game plan pass protection adjustments for 3rd down? Example?
Defensively: Do you game plan blitz adjustments for 3rd down? Example? #TXHSFBCHAT
A3- Will carry my screens if notice a heavy blitz tendency on third down as well as a tagging call to keep in a TE or back. Changing tempos/snap counts can help see a hand tip so my Q can throw behind the pressure. All adjustments will be based off film. #txhsfbchat
Got tons of resources on BTF at https://t.co/dmSOP6hmqQ. It's the best way to go when developing a blitz package. Call each package as a check w/ base rules (ex - blitz the RB). Each blitz from the same tree is now a one word check. #TXHSFBCHAT | #ArtofXhttps://t.co/NZqecAyTVS
A3: we are a full slide team so what we're looking at mostly is where they blitz from and match ups. Also like sprinting out on 3rd down (the original RPO) since our QB @JordanMedleyy is a threat to make a play with his legs when he breaks contain. #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: the R4 system helps provide a method of picking 3rd down calls no more than 10 broken down by distance however some of them are a regular part of the GP #TXHSFBCHAT
Q1:
Offensively: How many 3rd down concepts do you game plan for in game?
Defensively: How many 3rd down packages do you game plan for in game?

A3O: Yes. Give the QB freedom to call and check protections. He should always know where he is/isn't protected, in theory. Need to be able to check protection vs certain fronts (double A Gap, Bear, Jam fronts), certain players (bad matchups for RB, TE, poor OL). #txhsfbchat

A2 - stay confident in your favorite plays, things your kids do well.
"One look" some until you get a feel for what they are doing. Tempo, Hard Count & RPOs are good for these situations too.
#txhsfbchat

A4: Wednesday is situational day/blitz day for us. We use the R4 play sheet to script 3rd down situations for a game. The grids are broken down by 3rd D&D field zone. This allows for easy practice planning. All 9 Hash snaps & 3 MOF snaps are covered here. #TXHSFBCHAT

Q5: Offensively: Down by 5 on 50yd line, 2 min left in game, what is your favorite 3rd & 10 concept?
Defensively: Up by 5 on 50yd line, 2 min left in game, what is your favorite 3rd & 10 strategy? #TXHSFBCHAT
A5: Viking
Rhythm – Corner vs. Zone (converts to Fade vs. Man coverage)
Read - Vert. switch provides rubs vs. Man / clear out routes vs. Zone
Rush – Shallow is “Hot” vs Blitz & checkdown vs. Zone.
Release – Dig provides scramble route if pocket breaks down

Did by #1, Post by #2, Speed Out by #3 can have 2 WR run post or corner option. If they are giving us the short route we will take the 5 yards and go for it on 4th. #TXHSFBCHAT
My dad always said, "Prevent prevents you from winning."
3rd & Long = BTF. I've got you pinned. It's gonna come out quick. Playing catch coverage - breaking on hot routes. If you are gonna throw deep it's a fade vs off man catch (low % throw). #TXHSFBCHAT
Q5: Offensively: Down by 5 on 50yd line, 2 min left in game, what is your favorite 3rd & 10 concept?
Defensively: Up by 5 on 50yd line, 2 min left in game, what is your favorite 3rd & 10 strategy? #TXHSFBCHAT
A5. If run game has been working good, will call a PAP off of the run. Like to tag the bend with 2 high or Run flood off of that concept. Can't go wrong with comeback on 3rd and 10 as well. Hard to defend if ran correctly. #TXHSFBCHAT
A5) Empty Quad Set .. 4 WR on the Left 1 on the Right... See how the defense aligns. If they man up the single WR, we're checking to the 9 to him. If we don't get it the first time, we going right back to it. 3+10 on the 50 is always 2 down territory #TXHSFBCHAT
Defensively, lots of factors involved. Have we been getting home with pressure? Does the offense have a guy we need to bracket? How good is the qb, arm wise, scrambling? Is it a 19-14 game or 59-54? #TXHSFBCHAT
A5: not quite the same situation but this was the first play call that came to mind. Double Screen was a good play for us in this situation. #TXHSFBCHAT
A5) 3x1 RPO - IZ w/ free access throw on single WR side w/ stick concept to trips side. Def loads box for blitz get ball out quick or if Def empties box for coverage run the ball & create manageable 4th down #txhsfbchat

A5) You have to be willing to take shots. Especially on 3rd down and long. It's easier to convert a 3rd and long than a 4th and short. Plus you may end up getting the PI call. Roll the Dice High-Risk High Reward. #TXHSFBCHAT
Q5: Depending on how the defense plays us based on scouting report and what we see throughout the game. Wheel concept. We want to stress the defense get within about 2 yards of the marker if not the first and get moving. #TXHSFBCHAT
Q5:

A5: That scenario puts us in 4 down territory, going with a 3x1 stick concept with single side slant. Hoping for an easy catch and throw with some space to get us to 4th & 3 or less #TXHSFBCHAT
A5 - 3rd & 10 prolly going to get pressure here. 4 down territory, I like Q Draw run wise, they are prolly not expecting a run. Snag passing wise. #txhsfbchat
