#K12ArtChat is an #ArtsEd chat that happens every Thurs 8:30 pm CST founded by #TeamGrundler @ArtGuy76 & @GrundlerArt & share Ss' art on Fridays via #FabArtsFri.
A1 approaching life with an artists mentality has let me experience life as a process. An artist feels life. The highs and the lows. It is recognizing that life is a work of art and it is never truly finished. #k12artchat
Q1 How has art played a transformative role in your life? Be it personal, professional, artistic or otherwise, share a quick story as a way of introducing yourself #k12artchat
A1 I long dreamed I would become an artist -- 1st illustrator, then comic book penciler, then graphic designer -- and I ended up & English teacher who thinks like an artist & a designer #k12artchat

A1. I have always found myself needing to be creative that's why I tried an art related major in college, and teaching ESL is naturally worked its way in there as well. So when the art position at my school became available I jumped at the opportunity #K12ArtChat
A1: As a kid I have always mashed Art & Music with my love of Tech, my goal from early on was to be a graphic designer for a music company making CD covers! #K12ArtChat
A1: Art has always been joyful and soothing for me. My highschool art T gave me a D, and that was the hardest I ever worked for a grade. Taught me resilience and not to be like that. Now I encourage art! #k12artchat
A1 As Instruc Coach/Rdg Spec, I certainly never thought much abt it in my job. But, when I started working w/ Art T, I realized how we could infuse literacy w/out disrupting his classroom obj. Art is one of my favorite classes to hang out in...I've learned so much! #k12artchat
A1: #art saved me from the Dark Side when I had cancer ... and has helped me get through every dark moment since #k12artchat Amy in Hawaii (but I’m driving!)
Q1 How has art played a transformative role in your life? Be it personal, professional, artistic or otherwise, share a quick story as a way of introducing yourself #k12artchat
A1: It all started with crayons and paper while sitting on the kitchen floor, art has always made me feel whole. I went a period without, learned that not having art was painful. Now I create something everyday! https://t.co/JE9RRYrSiJ#k12ArtChat
Oh this is a great takeaway from challenges: resilience. It’s so important to keep perspective of what we can accomplish, even if it feels impossible. #k12ArtChat

A1 in second grade, my neighbor paid for me to go to after school art lessons. That experience (which lasted until I was 16 & continues to this day in other ways) has guided every part of my life since then! #K12ArtChat
I teach abroad, currently in Thailand that's why I started in ESL. I found myself trying to find more ways to visually communicate with my learners, and also found they learnt a lot more being active like creating crafts and expressing themselves #k12ArtChat
Q2 When you consider the schools in your communities, what are some challenges you see needing solutions? Think beyond your POV to what others may be seeing as well #k12artchat#edtech207#appleeduchat
A2 I think one challenge is the need to move away from isolated learning, departmentalization of learning, to a focus on thinking, creating & reflecting. Integration shouldn’t mean amongst disciplines but integration between school and life #k12artchat
A1:Despite being, in many ways, a prototypical “jock” growing up, I had a secret society of friends that expanded my mind throughout my high school experience in advanced art classes.Ideas & concepts explored in these classes led me to pursuing a degree in philosophy #K12ArtChat
A2 I'm very concerned about growing disconnect between schools & the communities they serve; rampant poverty in our rural schools; and students having equitable access to opportunity #k12artchat

A2 I think many schools in this country struggle with scheduling - there’s never enough time for everything! I’m really excited by the rotating block schedule at my new school - there’s even designated plc time! #K12ArtChat
A2: My concern is the degree to which we sacrifice what we know is good and well for the students in the name of following statute, initiatives, and orders. At some points educators are...wait for it...THE experts on education. Get out of the way and let them do. #K12ArtChat
A1: As an ELAR teacher, art has transformed my students' learning. Students struggling to transfer thoughts & feelings through spoken or written word use sketches, color, graphics, & comics to show what they know & to participate meaningfully. It provides voice! #K12ArtChat
Q3: What are some the principles of art -- fundamental understandings of art theory & practice -- that you remember daily as you create, teach, interact with art? #k12artchat
A2: Arts have the power to support schools and build learners confidence we are challenged to get the buy in needed to authentically integrate the arts to improve learner outcomes #K12ArtChat
A2- What I see that could benefit from a change to our schools, in communities around me, is if other teachers got Themselves AND their students more involved with their local communities #K12ArtChat imagine the Impact that type of change would have on All Stakeholders!
A3 I like to remind myself and my Ss that there are multiple “right” answers when creating art, that we each have a voice and that art is a way to use that voice. #K12ArtChat
A3 that art can be serendipitous, situational, contextual. A plan can get you started but it is essential to have an open mind, hand, & heart to allow for learning experiences that connect, empower & inspire. Even if... it wasn’t in the plans. #k12artchat
A3- Honestly, we use ALL of the Elements of Art within Every Art Project we do in my classes #K12ArtChat I just don’t know you couldn’t use them all, especially if you’re trying to get your students to ‘dive deep into a project’ and create New Heights & Challenges for Themselves
A2: I am very lucky. I work for a district who has a string understanding of what the arts doe for kids and are very supportive of visual arts. They constantly encourage & celebrate what we do. #k12artchat
In my house, it was highly encouraged that my 2 older brothers and I had to balance our sport background with some kind of Arts. (All of us wrestled in HS, we all played an instrument & all took an art class.) #K12ArtChat
A3: In many ways, the principles of art and design are perfects pedagogical focuses. Contrast creates intrigue. Balance gives stability. Rhythm is teaching in the pocket. Movement, both physical and mental, is a must. The list goes on #k12ArtChat
Oh, I was just thinking of how to phrase this! You’re right that a problem with time is figuring out a way to ensure it’s consistent and frequent. #K12ArtChat

#k12artchat A3 I ask myself this everyday... if you are student centered, that changes all the time. I firmly believe in emergent learning. Provide what is needed based on what the students have discovered or need to meet their artistic targets.
A3 Biggest thing I remember not all art is meant to be archival & failure is ok because it helps one to learn the perseverance to move fwd & grow. #k12artchat
A2: I am seeing how the number of Ss are packing into schools, when the buildings are not equipped to handle the volume of them. Which adds to the already stressful situations. #K12ArtChat
A3 I don't teach art, but work w/ an inspiring & enthusiastic art T. As we work together, I watch him & his Ss create art. When I'm in the art class, I am awe-struck by Ss who connect their passion along w/ the content & create their inner self. It's pretty incredible #k12artchat
A4- Imagine if Both Teaches AND Students ‘dove deep’ within a community based project, where there combined outcomes not only have them the experiences of working with the community, but their project Impacted their community, for the better #k12ArtChat Changing the Culture
Q1: Art has made me a better leader. Not every question has 1 answer, risk-taking is celebrated & understanding the value of BOTH process & product is key in every situation. &, most importantly, every child is a unique person. Not defined by a number or test score...#k12artchat
Before I tweet Q4 I want to push folks a little on Q3 to get as specific as they can; doesn't need to be exhaustive -- just needs to speak to some specifics that tend to emerge in your classrooms #k12artchat
A4- Imagine if Both Teaches AND Students ‘dove deep’ within a community based project, where there combined outcomes not only have them the experiences of working with the community, but their project Impacted their community, for the better #k12ArtChat Changing the Culture
#k12artchat A3 Question with more questions. Lean in and push them to explore more, try more, expand more, and challenge themselves more. It’s hard but don’t always just feed them an answer.
A3: try something new, learning how to create means learning how to see, you will get better no matter what, we can all be great-there’s not a limit. #k12artchat
The “soft skills” people talk about are really the backbone of quality arts program. We need to shift from calling them “soft” & begin to call them what they are. X-factor skills. skills that seperate you from others & lead to success in a conceptual based economy. #k12artchat
A4 We need to create conditions in which ss make connections. Not just within specific subjects, but across subjects & more importantly 2 life. There is no textbook/1 specific content area that leads 2 success anymore. Success is the ability to make connections. #k12artchat
A3: ok, so, I know I sound like a broken record, but harmony and unity are something I think about every day: what am I saying/doing/thinking that builds a positive culture. Check myself; what do I need to change. Cycle *almost* ad nasueum. #k12artchat
A4: I love dot connecting! And that’s one way to solve a problem! Look at individuals and find balance (schedule, needs, etc) to address inequity of time, resources, etc. #k12ArtChat
#k12artchat A4 students need opportunities 2lead their own goals based on their artistic targets. It’s a deeper connection to the “why”. Many can be told how to create a work of art, but does the process of creating the work of art transform the maker?

A2: Rural schools need more arts advocates...leaders/teachers who understand how arts impact lives, who are committed to S’s & can work towards building upon resources & pursuing opportunities. These people must be relentless & strong as they will encounter opposition. #K12ArtChat
A4 I think we apply this to a tremendous number of challenges in our schools; we often try to fix it all in one committee meeting OR get so emotionally invested in a single solution, we forget the fresh eyes #k12artchat
A6- I will continue to Advocate for the Visual Arts, for My Students, and for the Ever Changing environment that being an Art Teacher presents. #K12ArtChat Pushing the boundaries, excelling towards New Heights & continuing to Grow The Visual Arts at Collins HS #scthinksbigger
#k12artchat A4 students need opportunities 2lead their own goals based on their artistic targets. It’s a deeper connection to the “why”. Many can be told how to create a work of art, but does the process of creating the work of art transform the maker?
A5 using the art & design process to explore emotional thinking. The art room is a space where the logical, creative & emotional thinking habits collide. The art room is where ss make connections to self, others & the world we live in. #k12artchat
Q5: What are some innovations in the art world you see happening that may help us think differently about the role art plays in our schools? #k12artchat#art#artmatters
#k12artchat A5 I believe in #ChoiceArt and student directed programs. I’d love to see more blended disciplines with programs that work seamlessly with the arts programs not the silos. Bring it all in and together... there’s power in there, I know it!
A5: can it be less innovations and more back to basics and letting art take the lead? Like, there is more art integration and dedicated art classes? Time is made to celebrate performing arts? #k12ArtChat
Q5: What are some innovations in the art world you see happening that may help us think differently about the role art plays in our schools? #k12artchat#art#artmatters
Q6: Plan for action. How might you use artistic insights & experiences to compel new solutions to a challenging situation tomorrow? This weekend? Next week? #k12artchat
A6 always on the lookout to create the conditions for connections to be made. Connecting school, life & the child. Thinking about learning as an experience, not a product of isolated task. Empowering ss to create with their head, heart & hands. #k12artchat
Q6: Plan for action. How might you use artistic insights & experiences to compel new solutions to a challenging situation tomorrow? This weekend? Next week? #k12artchat
A5: I agree! Currently my school views art as a character enhancement subject without any academic value (that is actually the words used by some management) and it drives me nuts that they can't see the value in creating collaborative curriculums. #K12ArtChat
#k12artchat A6 I’m always creating and setting up opportunities for my students to lead the way. I plant the seed or start the spark... my students hopefully will grow a forest and a raging fire.
A1: Teaching Art renews my passion everyday as I learn and grow with my students. It’s both challenging as well as rewarding, and gave me purpose when life events became hard. #k12artchat
