Q1 : Each question is going to ask you about performing a task or skill BETTER! So, to start us off, what does the word “Better” mean to you?!? #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
A1: "Better" means to me that I have done something "better" than before, but have not yeat mastered it. I still need to grow and improve. #masterychat
#MasteryChat - A1 - Better means different things to different people. I think that because it is a subjective idea within itself, better really means having the ability to reflect upon whatever your doing and striving to improve.
Q1 : Each question is going to ask you about performing a task or skill BETTER! So, to start us off, what does the word “Better” mean to you?!? #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
A1 - It means that perfection is a goal not a destination. If I keep trying to do things better and with more innovation, I will get closer to the best experience for all my students. #MasteryChat
A1 "Better" to me, means constant improvement. Better does NOT mean "perfect." Rather, it is the constant drive to be better than I was yesterday/last week/last year/last attempt. #masterychat
Q1 : Each question is going to ask you about performing a task or skill BETTER! So, to start us off, what does the word “Better” mean to you?!? #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
A1: Besides being a killer Guns N Roses tune, I think of "Better" as an improvement of a skill or process in some impactful way. And it can be super duper subjective. #MasteryChat
A1: Better means acknowledging that there's always room for growth - but also admitting that what you've done was good! Can't be better until you've been good. #masterychat
Hey #MasteryChat PLN!
Jeff from Ohio. I work with @teachbetterteam and I have the honor of getting to work with teachers all around the country. LOVE seeing this family grow as we all strive to #TeachBetter!! Excited to learn with you tonight!
Q1 : Each question is going to ask you about performing a task or skill BETTER! So, to start us off, what does the word “Better” mean to you?!? #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
A1: In English class, I like the word "better" more than mastery because it gives students a target that both encourages and is within reach. We strive to get better every time we practice. #MasteryChat
A1 Better means starting from where you are a improving from that point or changing what you do in a certain way that will work for you or your students. #masterychat
A1 Better means finding what lies beyond what you've just done! Nothing is ever perfect and there is always room for improvement. You just have to reflect and respond to get there #MasteryChat
Q1 : Each question is going to ask you about performing a task or skill BETTER! So, to start us off, what does the word “Better” mean to you?!? #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
Welcome #MasteryChat Friends! Please introduce yourself & tell us where you are tweeting from today! In your message, share one thing you LOVE about YOU! Its ok, I am asking you to brag a bit!
A1 To me better means growth. Either using more efficient strategies, reflecting and changing a task to meet needs. Better means purposeful change #MasteryChat
Q1 : Each question is going to ask you about performing a task or skill BETTER! So, to start us off, what does the word “Better” mean to you?!? #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
Love your inclusion of Dr. Angelou's quote, Tika. Knowing better should cause us to reflect on current practices and make strategic adjustments, so that we can help others do the same @tikaee#MasteryChat
A1: A little "word play" might make this response "better." Interesting that the word has two Es. And we need them to be "bEttEr" at anything. . .Exposure and Experience. Think about the old adage: "See one. . .do one. . .(you know the rest)." #masterychat
A1: When I think of the word "better" I only think of it in reference to myself.
The only person I am in competition with is me; no one else. I strive every day to be better than I was yesterday at everything I do. It applies to work and life. #MasteryChat
Q1 : Each question is going to ask you about performing a task or skill BETTER! So, to start us off, what does the word “Better” mean to you?!? #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
Some synonyms for “better” would be improving, surpassing, and exceeding. We should always be striving for our very best! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
Q1 : Each question is going to ask you about performing a task or skill BETTER! So, to start us off, what does the word “Better” mean to you?!? #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
#masterychat A1: Better means you are willing to try something again that you haven’t excelled at... yet & trying out a change since the previous attempt #sd113a
#masterychat
A1: I think better means living with a sense of reflection and celebration of the effort to make small gains. Personally and in the classroom, I hope our better links to the better of community and problem solving. #TeachSDGs
Yes! I can't imagine being anything else. I am never bored in my job. There is ALWAYS something new to explore or some way I can grow! #Masterychat#TeachBetter
A1: to me, "better" means always seeking to improve, while at the same time recognizing your progress. There's room for growth no matter where you're starting from, whether you're a first-year teacher or veteran. It's not a competition. #MasteryChat
Q1 : Each question is going to ask you about performing a task or skill BETTER! So, to start us off, what does the word “Better” mean to you?!? #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
A2 - Managing better is ALL about systems, routines, and relationships...Creating a productive environment and culture of high expectations, accountability and TRUST! #teachbetter#masterychat@teachbetterteam
A2: To manage better means to use resources more effectively and to reach more students more deeply. Resources?? How about an awesome PLN to start with?! Like mine, #4OCFPLN! #MasteryChat
A1: "Better" means juuust outside the limits of my zone of proximal development. Doing juuust a little more than I thought I could. #masterychat#teachbetter
Q1 : Each question is going to ask you about performing a task or skill BETTER! So, to start us off, what does the word “Better” mean to you?!? #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
A2: Managing better is something that I will be working on forever. As a teacher, wife, and mom, time management is essential, and I believe I have to pick the "better" option when it comes to what I spend my time on, both professionally and personally. #MasteryChat
A1c - Better when it applies to learning and teaching also has to be something that students also see happening. For struggling kids, that better piece can be huge. #masterychat
Love this! Isn't this exactly the same kind of thinking we want our students to have? Be better than you were yesterday and better tomorrow than you were today! #masterychat
A2: To me, managing better means to be able to schedule it all out...I'm absolutely not one to micromanage anyone anywhere, but I think there needs to be an organized consensus of what needs to be done #masterychat
Q1 : Each question is going to ask you about performing a task or skill BETTER! So, to start us off, what does the word “Better” mean to you?!? #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
Hi there #MasteryChat, I'm Tashia from SoCal. My favorite thing about me is the fact that I ran a half-marathon while 6 months pregnant with my middle child. And I finished in 2:30! Currently working on getting back into running shape... So excited to be here w/you all.
A2 Managing all the many things that must be done in the day from answering emails to supervising to phone calls to teaching and planning. One tool that I use is @Planboard#masterychat
A2. To manage better frees up time to interact with students while they are engaged with the material. Using standards definitely helps with this. More opportunities for feedback. #MasteryChat
A2 Classroom management is all about the relationships we create and foster with our Ss. So managing better means focusing on those relationships and moving beyond the superficial. Really get to know your Ss #MasteryChat
A2 Managing better could be anything from routines, learning, self control, patience.... it would depend on what you think needs to improve #MasteryChat
Ummm YES! #PLN is a great outlet to improve your managing style. What was the best piece of advice you learned dealing with management from your PLN? #MasteryChat
Q2: This may be overly simple, but being meticulous about using my Google Calendar for everything has been life changing. As a less-than-organized person, it was a really big step for me and has made all the difference. #masterychat
A2: We can all "manage better" through organization and routine; working smarter not harder. Connect and working with others. It also means you need balance both in and outside of school. #masterychat#ElonEd
A2: Managing can be hard. Can be managing people, resources or time. I am trying for better organization in Gsuite from Drive to Calendar to find what I want when I want it #masterychat
A2 Managing better for me comes down to constant reevaluation of what is & isn't working. Sure, structures & routines are important, but being willing to notice when things are derailing or structures aren't working anymore & then pivoting is critical. #masterychat#teachbetter
Hi all! Kristen here! Sorry I’m late. I wanted to get to the gym and start on the bike before I started chatting. I teach sixth grade science #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat. A2. In my district, one has to be creative to manage kids. For example, giving them a detention doesn't really cut it. They would rather be at school. I usually have them reflect and talk to me during encore. Or, sometimes it happens during lunch.
A2: “Manage better” means to be constantly reflecting and improving the mastery of your work. Never settle, always find the excellence in learning! & @Twitter is THE place to “manage better”! #masterychat
A2: As a new teacher, I know that I will use my planner like crazy. I think manage better encompasses a lot of aspects of our profession. I know I will be busy this upcoming year, and I want to manage the potential awesomeness that will occur in my classroom. #masterychat
A1 Better means that each time you do a task you try to improve on the previous time. Enhancing what went well and correcting what didn't go well. #masterychat
#MasteryChat - A2 -Managing better means inspiring others to be better. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink. Whether it is with Ss or other adults, you can't force people to do anything. The key is getting them to do it because they want to be better too!
A2: Whether digital or on paper, you need a way to check yourself against clear success criteria. This is where micro credentials or a gamified classroom could work wonders. #masterychat
A2 Manage Better is two words because you need others to help manage Going it alone is not a path way to "Better" A class, building, district is always better when we work together #BetterTogether#MasteryChat
A2: When I hear manage better I automatically go to time management. Probably because I don’t manage very well. I use timers and google keep. Those have helped me tremendously! #MasteryChat
I think routines/structures in place are crucial, but so overlooked sometimes. Why are students disengaged/acting out/fill in the blank behavior problem here? Go back to the basics. Do they know what to expect when they walk into your classroom? #MasteryChat
I think it is to remember WHY I am doing things in class (and to get rid of things there is no good reason for)...also to take advantage of what my companions can offer me in widsom and experience! #MasteryChat
A2~to start~ boots on the ground peeps are my go to for resources & ideas ~ this includes top notch PLC ... also @teachbetterteam has shared some great tools lately #masterychat
A2: it means finding tools like @ClassDojo or @classcraftgame or @nearpod or @GetKahoot to build upon the foundation you MUST begin with—positive, authentic relationships. No tool can work if you don’t know what you’re trying to create. #MasteryChat
A2: Managing better requires one to look w/ a reflective lens of what could benefit from change. Feedback is a valuable tool to escort this change. #MasteryChat
A2: We can all "manage better" through organization and routine; working smarter not harder. Connect and working with others. It also means you need balance both in and outside of school. #masterychat#ElonEd
A2: I manage better with digital tools @padlet@GoogleKeep and apps galore! I manage EDU resources better with Google Sites. I stop “managing” kids when MY class became OUR class. #MasteryChat
A1 “better” first means taking the time to self assess what your end game is and then taking the next step towards reaching it. It’s a desire to outperform your last action #MasteryChat
A2 - Time management is key.
"I cherish my free time, But I maximize," is one of my key thoughts throughout the day. Using my time and others time to the deepest, most quality ways possible. #MasteryChat
A2: for me to manage better is to provide more tools, resources, and support my teachers need to be successful. This also means to be more directly involved as the instructional leader, which requires more efficient management of my time. #masterychat#leadbetter
A2 - I don’t really use the word manage better, but rather build community better. It looks like students feeling vested in the process and using a variety of tools at their disposal. Flipgrid, goformative, peardeck, google classroom, etc... #masterychat
A2 Manage better implies that we should be reflective and intentional about governing ourselves better before we attempt to manage others. When we reflect & learn about our own habits, this enriches our ability to help others on our teams #masterychat
A2: For "managing better," I think about those times my father had to mess with the rabbit ears on our television (remember these?). He couldn't see the screen from his position. He would ask "Better?" And, we would offer feedback based upon what we saw (or didn't). #masterychat
A2. To manage better is to find new and improved ways to facilitate learning, time management, organization, relationships, culture, preparation, etc. #masterychat
YES! Look at this practical idea! Anyone using google calendar?
I know @BryanZwemke lives by his..... (I make fun of him all the time for this) #MasteryChat
Q2: This may be overly simple, but being meticulous about using my Google Calendar for everything has been life changing. As a less-than-organized person, it was a really big step for me and has made all the difference. #masterychat
A2: Manage is a tough word. It intones the idea of struggling with challenges - not a bad thing. Tools to up our game include surrounding yourself with a stellar PLN, reading more, writing more, risking more, and sharing more. #MasteryChat
The great @Nick_Proud taught me that I am not a manager, I am a teacher. If the outcome in my classroom is not what I expect, I need to teach and reteach in differentiated ways until I reach each learner. #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
A2, #MasteryChat
to Manage Better... to lead with compassion as a team member. To understand where your team has become, better & encourage growth via understanding, love, & support- adding little by little
The old fashioned way. Get out into those classrooms and check out what's going on, and also get to know what they're into when they're not in their classroom. #MasteryChat
A2 By saying yes to the best and no to some really good things...Sometimes we say yes to alot of things and perform them at a mediocre level...I always bounce it off my spouse as a resource because she always gives me the business #MasteryChat
A2: Managing better means allowing yourself to let go a little, take risks, and be willing to be flexible. Being too rigid and scheduled can lead to stifled creativity and missed opportunities. #masterychat
A2a The tool I need to get better are honest peers who will be honest with my professional walk Sometimes you think you are better, but you are still a bit askew #MasteryChat
One good thing about me is that I love to laugh. I think I am one of the funniest persons I know. And it’s awesome that I get to laugh with myself all day.. 😂😂😂😂 #MasteryChat
A2 Manage better implies that we should be reflective and intentional about governing ourselves better before we attempt to manage others. When we reflect & learn about our own habits, this enriches our ability to help others on our teams #masterychat
A2: To me “manage better” with MS ss means more than every spending time to get to know ss & show them you care. Keeping up to date with tech that interests them goes a long way too #masterychat#sd113a
A2: I see managing better as increasing efficiency so you can focus on what matters: your students. Examples: the cups system for "triaging" student help, or using Google Forms for quizzes so you can spend less time grading.
#MasteryChat
A2: To manage better, I need to understand people (adults and students) and their unique differences. What motivates them? What do they care about? This knowledge helps both of us meet our goals. #MasteryChat
Interesting perspective! I love these questions, @RaeHughart, they can be interpreted in so many ways and we can glean so much insight from them! #masterychat
A2. Managing better means reflecting on what isn't working or could be improved and finding ways to improve. It looks different in everyone's classroom. #masterychat
A2 there’s only one thing in life that we can manage and that is ourselves. Even when we think we are managing “others” or “time”, we’re really just managing ourselves and our emotions. So “manage better” means looking internally and becoming more self aware #MasteryChat
A2 Manage better is finding ways to maximize our time so that we can be in the moment w/ our Ss as well as our loved ones. A tool that I use that helps me manage better is @msonenote. It allows me to organize all my resources, assignments, & helps me to deliver them. #masterychat
I'm probably the only under-30 who switched from google calendar and iCal back to paper 😂 until I realized that Siri could just remind me about everything 5 minutes before. But if I don't write by hand, I won't remember it. I forget to check digital calendars. #masterychat
A2: Managing better is all about minimizing distractions that take away our focus on improvement.
If I'm a leader, it's my responsibility to remove those barriers from those I'm leading. #MasteryChat
A2: I also need to up my game when it comes to including and involving families whose first language is not English. I will be taking steps to do a better job this year. #MasteryChat
A3 - Pursue better means never settling, and even in the darkest of hours looking for the light, the opportunity, the feedback that can make you BETTER! #teachbetter#masterychat@teachbetterteam
I think of management not just as managing behavior or Ss, because you are right- building community better solves most of those concerns. But manage better, to me, also is about how I keep track of classroom supplies, stay organized, and remember to call parents! #masterychat
A1: Effectively. Efficiently. With more passion. With more love. With better defined goals. With less errors. With a better set of skills. With more learning. Yummier, if we are talking about chocolate cake... #MasteryChat
A2: to manage you must set goals or outcomes that can be measured. Measured steps always to understand if we are striving for better. Write your goals and how you plan to achieve them.
#masteryChat
#MasteryChat I think pursuing means to take chances. I was just talking to a colleague about this. I love taking chances! It might just be a good thing.
A2 Managing better is all about checking in with ourselves to see what skills, habits, and ideas are working well (and defining what "well" means to us) and adjusting to meet changing situations #masterychat
Share some of your ideas! What tools, resources, support do you find to be most successful? Or what do you do to be directly involved as an instructional leader? #masterychat
A3 To Pursue Better a T has to always want to improve in their trade craft There is something everyone can work on With that philosophy my best day as a T will be my last day in the classroom...as it should be #MasteryChat
A3: Pursue better means you are brave or mature enough to realize that you need help to become for effective. You look for opportunities, resources, and people to help you. #MasteryChat
A3: Pursuing better means to REFLECT on what can be made better immediately and in the long run. That means we take time to think about it and to see what we can improve on tomorrow, next unit, next year. #MasteryChat
A3 Pursuing better is everything! It means never assuming that what we did before is the right way or the best way to do things. Being willing to flip on ideas you used to hold sacred if new evidence comes to light that they just don't work for kids. #Masterychat#Teachbetter
A mentor of mines loves to say, “All thinking floats on a sea of talk.” I think professional discourse is a great strategy for reflection. Eg, informally at lunch, during a PD session, or Twitter chat. I also find exercise great for reflection - I prefer running! 🏃 #masterychat
A3: Pursuing better means doing more than just dreaming. Reminds me of why my family came to the US - to actively pursue, not wish for, something better. Word hard and set big goals because even if you fall short, you're miles ahead #MasteryChat#TeachBetter
A2: Managing better is intentionally improving your methods and practices to reflect your increased knowledge about how students learn, your experiences, and your expertise in doing what works. #masterychat
A1: Better means PROGRESS has been made. It doesn't have to necessarily be an improvement. Sometimes improvement takes multiple attempts, trials, errors, & even failure. Just progress, knowing with continued effort, you'll get there. #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
Q1 : Each question is going to ask you about performing a task or skill BETTER! So, to start us off, what does the word “Better” mean to you?!? #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
#masterychat A2: To me “manage better” with MS ss means more than every spending time to get to know ss & show them you care. Keeping up to date with tech that interests them goes a long way too #sd113a
A3: Pursuing "better" means looking for it and listening to it. John Maxwell says, "If you are 'leading' and no one if following, you're simply taking a walk." I need more people out front doing the work. We can find them here in the chat and in abundance at Twitter. #masterychat
A3 I think we should always be trying to learn things and working to improve what we do in any way we can. This is what pursue better means to me. To be relentless about learning. #masterychat
A3: Pursuing better means never settling or giving up. It means honest reflection followed by action in our classrooms. Research, student feedback, admin and teacher feedback all help us pursue excellence in our classrooms. #masterychat
A3: My parents were born in Poland and moved to the United States about a yr before I was born. They wanted to pursue better, and that inspires me to never give up. I was born pre-mature, and I keep on moving forward. I am so happy that I made my dream a reality. #masterychat
A3. Pursue. To chase. To follow. To lead. We must chase after the hearts of our kids, follow our and dreams, and lead with passion. Because #KidsDeserveIt#masterychat
A3: #masteryChat
The pursuit of betterment... to want to be able to give your ever growing and best self to your students, your team mates, & your family. Never stop learning, giving, loving, & living
A3 Never settling. Of course we all have those great lessons and successes, but celebrate and then be critical What could we do better next time? What could make this more engaging? How could I make this easier on the students and teacher? Basically always look ahead #MasteryChat
I had a Muslim student in my class last year, and I remember his mother being shocked when I emailed her to ask if he would be participating in Ramadan and might need special accommodations during that time. #MasteryChat
A3 My OneWord this year is TRY. Try. What's going to happen if you don't? What could happen if you DO? What does it take...? Confidence. Or clicking submit/publish/apply! Either way! #masterychat
A3: Building your PLN! Using that PLN to pursue ideas and resources. ACTIVELY going after what you want to better what you are doing. #MasteryChat#ElonEd
Working smarter is so important. We emphasized last year to be more efficient with instruction, transitions, planning, etc. This may require some to get off the porch #GOTP and out of their comfort. We will emphasize this year as well. #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat A2 - “Most people are not overworked but under-planned.” From this book. I break my day down into 30-Minute segments. Use your time to impact kids, teachers instead of chasing paper.
A3: To me pursue better means to drive yourself until you find better or improvement. Driving yourself into research, PLN, and asking growth questions. Getting outside of that comfort zone. #MasteryChat
A3 When you pursue better, you must first make the effort to understand where your weaknesses are, and then seek out resources to help you grow #masterychat
A3 Pursue better means looking for ways, methods to improve the level you currently are... It takes determination, resolve, prayers, help. #masterychat
A3: To pursue better means to constantly seek to improve yourself, in whichever way you want. As a teacher, I want to pursue better methods, better resources, better everything....and most importantly, better relationships with everyone I interact with. #MasteryChat
A3: Pursue better means to find ways to learn, even when you don’t “need” to. If you’re in this chat tonight, you’re a prime example of “pursuing better”! You want to meet and learn from anyone- WE all have something different to offer! #masterychat
A3: Pursuing better means seeing obstacles in our way but moving forward anyway despite of the fear. It means being relentless in the pursuit of our dreams. Because of Twitter and #masterychat, I have pursued more than I could have ever dreamed of at this point.
A3: To pursue better requires saying yes even when challenges present themselves, and it demands the strength to say no to the distractions that pull on us. #masteryChat
As for tools, anything that improves communication tops my list. Apps, processes (these chats😉).
The better that we can communicate about the barriers we face, the easier it is to address them. #MasteryChat
A3 “pursue better” is a daily quest that an individual must be willing to accept. It starts with asking questions on a consistent basis. “How can I do it better?” “What would I change?” “What worked well?” “Where can initerate?” “How can I be #bettereveryday ?” #MasteryChat
A2b - The management piece can challenge even the most experienced teacher. I try to look at the “why” I am doing something before going into great details. If we can answer that question, it helps our instruction. #masterychat
Excited and nervous! Def excited to be impacting kids and finally do what I’ve trained to do. Nervous because I want to be the best I can be for my kids, and you don’t know what that means until you meet them! I remind myself that being nervous just means I care #MasteryChat
A3 When we pursue, we strive for some thing, some one, our goal, or our vision. Pursuing connects to our priorities. When we pursue better, we adjust our priorities to enrich ourselves and create a positive impact for the greater good #masterychat
#MasteryChat - A3- Pursue Better means not just accepting the status quo because it is the way that things have been done in the past. It means reevaluating and accepting feedback as well.
A3: Knowing your passions, setting goals, putting in the work, learning, growing, reflecting, failing, more learning, and growing, helping others, and more learning and growing! #masterychat
Yes, as long as it is meaningful feedback taken thoughtfully. If it is just insults, noise or echoing others' statements, we can't use it to get "better." #MasteryChat
A3: To pursue better, we have to specifically identify our goal(s). We shouldn’t confuse activity with progress. You can break a serious sweat pushing against a brick wall. But...#MasteryChat
A2 Managing better is about #growthmindset first & foremost, followed by process improvement. This means coming to terms with the fact that managing better is a task that will never be finished. It is always a work in progress. #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
A2:there are lots of things we can manage better. Our responses to negativity and our ss. Our emotions. Our delivery of instruction. How we assess. What we use to assess. How much time we waste.Criticism. When we “fail.” How many pieces of chocolate cake we eat.#MasteryChat
"Feedback is critical in so many ways as an educator. For us and our own reflective practice, and for our students and their learning! #masterychat " @TechieTeachOtt
A3: The pursuit of knowledge is all about actively going after our learning. Being a life-long learner is HARD - but there's nothing better in the world! Read books, listen to podcasts, participate in Twitter chats, connect with experts, seek out quality articles... #masterychat
A3. Persueing better- Never stop learning! Life is ever-changing, just as you learn one method, there will be better methods which will be introduced in learning!Multiple ideas!#masterychat
A2: Managing of ourselves or others? In either case I think listening without judgement is an important component of managing better. To listen and be open and honest with what we hear. #MasteryChat
A3: Shakespeare's famous stage direction reads: "Exit, pursued by a bear." When we are pursued by a bear or a metaphorical bear, we tend to seek betterment, fast. #masterychat
Wow - Love this! Identifying your weaknesses are difficult on occasion (and even harder to admit) What is one area you have identified and since grown? #masterychat
A3: Pursuing better means to continue on the road even if it looks dangerous and unused. Our job is to do what is best for kids even if it’s scary or difficult because #KidsDeserveIt! #MasteryChat#TMGenius
This has been my rallying cry the past few years and it has changed how I approach the classroom day by day, week by week. Sometimes it works, sometimes not, but it keeps me sharp and keeps me revising which is so important to being a dynamic teacher. #masterychat
A3~work harder than anyone else to better yourself in whatever you are pursuing, continuous learning and refinement of your craft & surround yourself with people who will provide love, support & specific feedback that helps you get better #masterychat
A3: To “pursue better” means to realize something wasn’t good enough & be willing to reflect & adapt. It takes discipline & the willingness to accept failure & learn from it. With ss we need to do more of pointing out kids that have “pursued better” #masterychat#sd113a
A3: To pursue better means to be proactive in doing and being your best. You can do this by building a PLN that consists of great teachers and leaders, read professional books, and seek feedback by inviting colleagues into your classroom. #masterychat
A3: I'm sure I'm going to sound like a broken record here, but pursuing better is to intentionally increase your knowledge and expertise through experiences that will help you better connect with students, families, colleagues, and others. #masterychat
A3: Pursue means to seek out with a purpose (in the Lowery dictionary of the mind). Its the difference between browsing target for something that might catch my eye or speed walking to the school supply section with my cart to complete the task at hand. #MasteryChat
My title 1 reading teacher and reading specialist created a doc with interventions and strategies to improve literacy. We uploaded it to @google Drive for easier access. My AP and I are creating a spreadsheet which Ts can access with specific student weaknesses. #MasteryChat
A3 The thrill is in the chase! Pursuing better means constantly looking ahead with open eyes. Running blindly forward will get you nowhere. Knowing where you want to end up and setting specific goals will help get you there #masterychat
Love your thoughts here, @MrsCotesClass Knowing where our areas of improvement are requires a great deal of introspection and thinking about our current habits and practices. #MasteryChat
With the idea, though, that it was we could do at that time with the resources and knowledge we had. Improvement doesn't mean self-flagellation. #MasteryChat
Agreed! I have to make a conscious effort sometimes to make it happen but when I am critical, I make changes that are tangible and necessary. #masterychat
A3: I think it's about being strategic....not just coming up with a plan, but mapping out exactly what needs to be done to accomplish success #masterychat
A3: Pursue with passion and enthusiasm and confidence. Take risks, reflect. Make changes, and never stop moving forward, constantly evaulauting your goals, setting little steps along the way, and never ever stop smiling and laughing and eating chocolate cake... #MasteryChat
Continual development- personal and professional. Find something you’re passionate about and work toward it. But it might take perseverance and a lot of time, depending on the goal. #masteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
A3: Pursue the good ideas before thinking about pursuing a sense of the god or goddess of the ideal. Your ideal may not have anything that will work for YOU. But, ideas are generative. Notice there is more than one "pin" in "Pinterest." There's a reason for that. #masterychat
A3 Pursuing better requires #growthmindset & exposing weaknesses in your own ways of doing things; willing to take risks, try new ideas, explore ways you didn't think would work, & allowing yourself to push through uncomfortable moments. #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
A2: "Manage better" could mean organization or behavior management. For behavio, there so many visuals like class dojo or many non-tech systems. #masterychat#teachbetter#TeachbetterTeam
A3 The thrill is in the chase! Pursuing better means constantly looking ahead with open eyes. Running blindly forward will get you nowhere. Knowing where you want to end up and setting specific goals will help get you there #masterychat
#masterychat
A3: To pursue better starts w vocation. ou have to have the why of what you are pursuing as a foundation to the how or your resilience will suffer. Highly recommend listening to this podcast to get a feel for vocation/ pursuing your calling. https://t.co/JQzCRQebFt
Yes!! I heard @burgessdave on #kidsdeserveit podcast challenging us to always seek greatness even if it doesn’t reflect in our paycheck! It’s ALL about what we do for others! Serve! THAT’S what we DO
#masteryChat
To be more directly involved, I HAVE to be in the classrooms more and provide more feedback/encourage discussion. I also need to be more consistent with creating and holding meetings discussing concerns for students. #Masterychat
A3 To me pursue better means that each time I deliver a task or perform a skill I have done everything I can to make it better. This may mean finding better resources, asking colleagues for advice, or having practiced it before delivering it. #masterychat
A3: To “pursue better” means to realize something wasn’t good enough & be willing to reflect & adapt. It takes discipline & the willingness to accept failure & learn from it. With ss we need to do more of pointing out kids that have “pursued better” #masterychat#sd113a
A3 Pursuing better means honestly reflecting on our practice and being open to feedback. Search out Pd. Observe others and be open to change. #MasteryChat
Reflect on what you’re currently doing alone, but also with stakeholders (ts, admin, KIDS). Brainstorm how it could change. Research what others are doing. Adapt all of the ideas to fit your needs. Implement. Repeat!
Communication is key - it takes a village! #MasteryChat
What a beautiful sentiment! It can be so hard not to judge ourselves when we want to be better because we tend to be such harsh critics when we know where we want to be #masterychat
My title 1 reading teacher and reading specialist created a doc with interventions and strategies to improve literacy. We uploaded it to @google Drive for easier access. My AP and I are creating a spreadsheet which Ts can access with specific student weaknesses. #MasteryChat
Your thoughts on exploring are spot on, Jennifer. When we explore, we question. When we question, we learn. When we learn, we apply these lessons to next steps in our lives @jenchitmon#MasteryChat
A3. (Teresa tech coach from PA sneaking in on the chat) pursue but don't obsess Obsession gets in the way and distracts you from your goals Pursue with passion strive to be the best you can be stay focused and never stop learning #growthmindset#MasteryChat#TeachBetter
A4 - Connect better can mean that you open up your classroom and yourself to colleagues, admins, the community, parents, guardians and all stakeholders. IT TAKES A VILLAGE...CONNECT TO IT! #teachbetter#masterychat@teachbetterteam
I do my best to lead by example. I try new things in the school and with my staff. I also provide info, websites, etc. for them to review. If staff attends a conference and needs something to make what they want to try work, I get it for them if possible. #MasteryChat
I have three daughters in school this year. The only time I wandered out of the school supply section was to find playdough in the toys aisle. #MasteryChat#PreKSuppliesFTW
Again agreed! There are times to cut and take time off, but often I find myself thinking about specific students, lessons, ideas, and projects when I am at concerts, eating, etc. It just floods your brain sometimes. #masterychat
A4 To connect you need to be a good listener A person who validates others thoughts by really hearing what a person is saying & then having a collaborative conversation #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat A4: I think it means to connect and meet new teachers. Every connection could lead to something that any student could benefit from. Using more technology to help connect would be amazing.
A4: Really listening to Ss, getting to know their life outside of class, and making sure Ss know that you have their back, even in the hard times #masterychat
A4 Connecting better is about connecting with Ss, Ps, and Ts in transformative ways. Can you connect digitally with a classroom around the world? Maybe you can Skype a parent rather than a phone call? Form a #PLN with amazing Ts here on Twitter! #MasteryChat
A4 I believe we can set goals for ourselves, build relationships with our Ss and our fellow educators. If we connect with others, we can learn so much #MasteryChat
A3: to pursue better is to have a growth mindset. Set aside time to think about what's been going well, what hasn't been going so well, and what you can do about it. I keep having to remind myself to reflect daily so I can make changes for next time, or I'll forget.
#MasteryChat
A4: Just taking the time to connect is connecting better. Listening, empathizing, reaching out - but if I had one wish, it would be for my colleagues to stop singing their emails with "best wishes" if we're best friends. You can be professional but ehhh #Masterychat
A4: I think connecting better means taking a step back and seeing where the holes are in communication...and then finding a way to mend them #masterychat
Happens all the time! I just wish I was able to record every single passing thought in every circumstance. Hard to do in the middle of church or while driving across the state, though!! #masterychat
A1: Better to me means showing growth from where I started. However, we shouldn't stop there. Continue to set goals and find ways to refine your craft. When we know better, we do better #MasteryChat#teachbetter
Q1 : Each question is going to ask you about performing a task or skill BETTER! So, to start us off, what does the word “Better” mean to you?!? #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
I think it is so powerful for administration to be present and visible all the time in school. I want it to be no surprise at all when my admins walk in because it is simply a part of their and my routine. Open doors- open learning- open growth! #masterychat
A4: Connecting better means meeting kids where they are at both academically and emotionally. High fives and accommodations are great, but if the student doesn't feel connected to you, they won't learn a thing. #MasteryChat
A4: connect better for me would be to be intentional about engaging families and communities. I’m starting a new school this year so I will starting over with the relationships in my school. #MasteryChat
A4 - Listening and being responsive. I was talking to a teacher the other day and she said she was having a hard time with using Google Contacts, so I made her a video on how to work with it. Just little things that take ten minutes but connect you to that person. #MasteryChat
A4: Come back to #MasteryChat archive tomorrow. Follow teachers in thread. Really. Think about how many of these people are on their summer vacation right now thinking about ways to be, pursue, and connect better already. I'm following away tonight because I'm blown away tonight.
A3: To pursue better we need clearly defined goals. Without a goal, we don’t know what we are pursuing. Goals may change along the way, but that’s part of becoming better. #MasteryChat
Yes. It can’t be her kids or his kids. It has to be OUR kids. This is a point of emphasis for us this year. We have to get better and it can’t be one 1 or 2 people. Has to be WE. #MasteryChat
A4 love this because every communicates, few connect. To make a better connection we must first communicate better. The only way to communicate better is to have intentionality and sincerity in the pursuit of becoming better. Beginning with love is a great start! #MasteryChat
Finding ways to interact with people...talking with Ss/Ts about something other than work...joining chats to discuss ideas...#MasteryChat#TeachBetter#teachbetterteam
A4: connect with more people. More variety. People who challenge you, who inspire you, make you laugh. Make you cry. Who think completely differently than you and have diff set of strengths.People from a variety of places and ones who will Make you a chocolate cake. #MasteryChat
Hopefully I'm not running blindly! I'm trying very hard to look at all possibilities from every angle and to set specific goals so I can get to my next level! #masterychat
A4: Connect better? Be “present” with ss and colleagues-let the list of a million things in your head go (so hard to do at times), give eye contact & truly listen & not be thinking of a response while they are still talking #Masterychat#sd113a
#MasteryChat - A4 - From my experience, connecting better means keeping our conversations about Ss and coworkers positive and supportive, even when the real struggles of the teaching job become overwhelming. Negativity is not going to bring us together.
A4: Connect better by listening and being present in class, in your pln, on your team, etc. Communicate your interest and your thoughts. Build bridges. #masterychat
A4: There are teachers in our buildings who we only see at staff meetings. To "Connect Better" we need to not be afraid to get out of our hallways and chat with our colleagues. Those connections are important for building school culture #masterychat
A4: For me it was getting past my insecurities and reaching out to some the teachers I've been learning the most from online. (Guess what? They were all amazing in person!) #masterychat
A4: To be consistently connected to all our students as much as they will let us be, and to connect with their families in a concerned, loving way. Oh, and with each other on a regular basis...like here! #MasteryChat
A4: Connect better - get outside of your comfort zone! There are some many people and resources available. You need to make connecting a priority. Connecting with students means taking the time to get to know them as individuals, not just students. #MasteryChat#ElonEd
A4: I know we’re in the context of the classroom, but I can’t help but relate it to one of my dearest friends. She is so good at connecting. I’ve wondered why - it’s bc she is not afraid of going after her friends. Connecting better looks like vulnerability. #MasteryChat
A4: This response will bring tears to my eyes. Connecting better for me means realizing untapped potential in each of us. All the educators on #masterychat have stood by me through thick and thin and have embraced my journey. They always lift me up and push me forward.
A4: I think the first step is realizing we all make up the complete picture, but we are each individual puzzle pieces. We don’t all connect the same way. Take the time to find out how they fit best rather than trying to force them into the space you prefer. #MasteryChat
A4 Connecting better involves learning your audience: learning styles, interests, & "love language." What is valued by one can be insignificant to another. Building relationships is one of the greatest data points from which to gain. #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
A3: To pursue better means to be a lifelong learner, to remember its about the journey not the destination. This is effective when you get up and do it! Never shy away from expanding your own learning! Take charge of it!
A4 Connecting better takes time and requires commitment. Connecting requires us to be open to other people's ideas in order to stretch our own thinking and strengthen the connection. #masterychat
A4: To connect better means to implement our new learning. It means to reflect and make necessary changes to improve learning for our students and ourselves. You connect better when you have a growth mindset! #masterychat
A2: Mange better to me means putting First Things First. Prioritize your BIG rocks first. Sometimes we focus on too many little things. I'm sometimes guilty of this...squirrel moments LOL #masterychat#TeachBetter
I know what you mean. I was in Chicago this past weekend at a punk concert and it hit me that I needed to so an assignment on some topic. I whipped out my phone and wrote down a note about it. As Neil Young said You have to honor the inspiration wherever you are at. #MasteryChat
Agree completely. Admins have to visible and involved. I have found that this becomes easier as I build trust with my teachers. They need to know I’m not “out to get them”. If someone is struggling, I want to help. #MasteryChat
Personally, I feel I do well with the people in front of me... students, team, family. I like to listen ☺️ I have to be more intentional to reach out to people I don’t see regularly. Like my Twitter PLC! I need more chats scheduled in my calendar #MasteryChat
Absolutely! There will plenty of time for them to face real world competition later.
A D student becoming a C student should be celebrated just as much as a B student becoming an A student. #MasteryChat
This week's #masterychat poll! We will talk about the results in our post-chat live video on the @teachbetterteam Facebook Page!
Which area do you think you have the most room for improvement in your journey to #TeachBetter?
A4 Connect by listening AND hearing be genuine be honest show compassion empathy and kindness Lift others up celebrate their successes encourage them when they fall and lead with #positivity#masterychat#TeachBetter
A4 We need to leave the door open, and take others up on the opportunity to meet with them. We need keep an open mind, and get over the fears we have about the judgement of others so that we can connect and learn from each other #masterychat
A4: Connecting better is meeting people where they are at and helping them get to where they need to be. It is all about honouring their movement from point A to point B, regardless of where those points are in relation to others. #MasteryChat
In my classroom, students CONNECT content through learning while participating in themed mock internships, sponsored by local businesses! I LOVE having connections at the forefront of the discussion! #masterychat#TeachBetter Details HERE : https://t.co/yEaer7L00Y
A4 As leaders, we are called to connect with our teams. When we connect with them, we invest in their betterment as a professional and as a person. Connecting with our team demonstrates that we care and we desire to see them grow #masterychat
A4: Connecting better with
-teachers: find "your people" in your school, district, or online. Seek and give feedback. Make each other better teachers.
-students: interest surveys, open-ended projects, go to extracurriculars, talking to kids about their lives.
#MasteryChat
A4 Connect better means making efforts to really connect with the folks in our PLN, with colleagues, and especially with our Ss. Connected the last couple of days with Twitter friends face to face at #BLC18#masterychat
Exactly! Thank God we have that technology now, so that we don't always have to scribble stuff down on paper (which might have looked odd at a punk concert!). And nice NY reference....I'm a HUGE CSN and CSNY fan. #masterychat
#masterychat a4 Have been thinking of ss who like to sidle up sideways to academia and how creating online platforms has helped me and them be better
#teacherlife
A4: When you connect better, you form relationships based on connections and the need to improve. When you “connect” you rely on the connections to help you continue to grow. #MasteryChat
A4~ connecting better might be to think about who your connecting with , 1 or many, and tailor your contact to make sure all input is heard & valued & all stakeholders benefit in a positive way #MasteryChat
Connect better means to not be afraid of the best resource that we have— EACH OTHER! Instead of being nervous about other teachers opinions, use them as a resource-reflect & engage with them so we can grow! #MasteryChat#growthmindset#TMGenius@k_callahan4 we just said this!
A4 Relationships. Relationships. Relationships. Build them with students, stakeholders, and colleagues. Connect yourself to the right people so you can continue to grow and be better. #masterychat
A4) To connect better is to share your life story. Ss need to see the miles you’ve travelled, and the many more you still need to take. The journey is everything. #masterychat
I have to scoot early....my children are summoning me ;) Thanks for the great chat and feel free to check out our site! https://t.co/bHJeKQ6E8Z#masterychat
Could not agree more. As teachers we should be in the business of pushing students outside their comfort zones, but I often see lots of people (not just teachers) staying their bubbles. Going outside means making a connection and being connected. #MasteryChat
A4 Why not try impacting everyone we come in contact with positive ly everyday? Sometimes that means disconnecting from some negative peeps 😬 #MasteryChat
#masteryChat Making a connection is about authenticity and genuineness- listening intently and not just waiting for your turn to speak. When we feel that deeper, mindful communication we feel like kindred spirits this creates stronger relationships
In my classroom, students CONNECT content through learning while participating in themed mock internships, sponsored by local businesses! I LOVE having connections at the forefront of the discussion! #masterychat#TeachBetter Details HERE : https://t.co/yEaer7L00Y
I am Bharat. Vice principal/ Head in one of the Govt. school in Delhi India. A feel i am also growing with each batch/ session with children and teachers and wish to work hard for the last few years of my career. #masterychat
A4 Teaching can be isolating. You need to seek out your PLN. It could be within your building or grade level or on Twitter and at Conferences. But you have to be open with your PLN, or you won’t really grow. Don’t be afraid to be vulnerable. #MasteryChat
#1 Getter better sometimes means just taking a risk. Sometimes it just means doing you best. Sometimes it means being open minded to change. It doesn’t have to be something really big. #Masterychat
I LOVE when I get to meet my digital #pln in person at conferences. It makes my day! I can't wait to meet so many of you here from our #masterychat#PLN next year at the #TeachBetterConference!
A4 Connect better means making efforts to really connect with the folks in our PLN, with colleagues, and especially with our Ss. Connected the last couple of days with Twitter friends face to face at #BLC18#masterychat
Sometimes it helps not to use terms like “positive/negative” or “good/bad”. Instead try “helpful/unhelpful” or “constructive/destructive”. Sometimes critique is necessary for growth, even if some might see it as “negative”. #MasteryChat
#masterychat has absolutely impacted my life. @RaeHughart, @chadostrowski, @TechieTeachOtt, and @jeffgargas have been instrumental during my journey thus far. I cannot imagine not being connected to these incredible individuals. They are truly the real deal.
A4: I think sharing is part of building better connections. Sharing knowledge, resources, experience, support, or an open ear. Connections grow and strengthen when we all do our part to build them. #MasteryChat
A4: Connect better means to strengthen our relationships. We learn best by sharing ideas with our colleagues. We teach best by knowing our students. Connect to people, not things. #MasteryChat
Q5 : What does it mean to Design Better? What does a Strong Curriculum Design look like & how do you make this … well… Manageable?! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
A4: To connect better, try this tomorrow: When you are seated and talking to someone, notice where your toes are pointed. That’s where your attention is. It’s subtle body language, but irrefutable when you think about it. Show people they are worth your attention. #MasteryChat
Q1 : Each question is going to ask you about performing a task or skill BETTER! So, to start us off, what does the word “Better” mean to you?!? #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
As I start working with teachers who are going to be implementing PBL, I need to remember that they are all going to be at different points and their journeys with their students will all be different but still valuable. #masterychat
It would look weird. I am a big fan, too. @KevinDevineTwit told me that quote in an interview once and it has always stuck with me as a truth for any profession but particularly writers, musicians, and teachers. #MasteryChat
A4 Connecting better means not only reaching out to others, but also working to build strong connections once we have found the people who help us become better! Tomorrow, I will reach out to people inside and outside my school to build those relationships #masterychat
Sometimes it helps not to use terms like “positive/negative” or “good/bad”. Instead try “helpful/unhelpful” or “constructive/destructive”. Sometimes critique is necessary for growth, even if some might see it as “negative”. #MasteryChat
A4 always Make time to focus on relationships and checking in with colleagues and continuing to build PLN, Share our experiences and make sure that’s an important part of our daily practice #masteryChat
Q5 : What does it mean to Design Better? What does a Strong Curriculum Design look like & how do you make this … well… Manageable?! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
A3: Pursuing better means looking for ways to make gains in whatever your focus areas are. Coming up with a plan, trying it out and evaluating.
If you don't like the results, you get right back at it seeking new ideas. Relentless effort drives effectiveness #MasteryChat
This week's #masterychat poll! We will talk about the results in our post-chat live video on the @teachbetterteam Facebook Page!
Which area do you think you have the most room for improvement in your journey to #TeachBetter?
This week's #masterychat poll! We will talk about the results in our post-chat live video on the @teachbetterteam Facebook Page!

A5 - Designing with knowledge acquisition in mind. What can I do to create an environment where students learn best? What am I doing to assess this learning to ensure it is occurring?
#MasteryChat
Q1 : Each question is going to ask you about performing a task or skill BETTER! So, to start us off, what does the word “Better” mean to you?!? #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
So late! 4th grade T from Indiana. Kids are struggling to get to bed tonight. Hope we start getting into a better routine as we get ready for school to start! #masterychat
A4: #masteryChat
listen, be kind &understanding. oooooo! Be like Dizzy🐬! 😁
Oh, 😕that’s what I’ll do-Tomorrow I will give the book away & try to open a conversation that failed terribly y’day. No one may make us feel down, w/out our permission. I shouldn’t have granted it.
The power of connection and a shared mission to constantly pursue better cannot be understated. When we come together and support each other, amazing things can happen! #teachbetter#masterychat
In reply to
@MsJachymiak, @RaeHughart, @chadostrowski, @jeffgargas
A5 - Design Better means starting with standards, removing fluff, making connections and learning REAL for students. It also means making learning engaging and purposeful! #teachbetter#masterychat#teachbetterteam
A5 - Designing means keeping in mind that you are creating a tool for your audience (students) to obtain a product (knowledge). Designing better means that you put less barriers between those two ends as possible while making the experience interesting. #MasteryChat
A5 Design better is to make decisions that are best for students A strong curriculum validates & empowers Ss to lead in the classroom I make this happen by making the classroom a shared learning space #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat A5: This has been my summer goal. I have been working on a curriculum that's engaging, but manageable. It does help that I taught it last year. I want to centers more.
#masteryChat Curriculum design that is based on student growth, not test scores and data. Design based on teaching our students how to think, analyze and teach themselves- when we do that - they are learning not incrementally but exponentially
Q5 : What does it mean to Design Better? What does a Strong Curriculum Design look like & how do you make this … well… Manageable?! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
A5: Design better means to be mindful and thoughtful. “Is what you’re doing making a DIRECT impact on kids learning?” Ask yourself this. Design following this mindset! #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat a1 Better is a BIG idea but my part has been finding multiple marks to hook ss into starting. E.g provide 3 different ways to start Science aim. It helped, ergo, better
Q5 : What does it mean to Design Better? What does a Strong Curriculum Design look like & how do you make this … well… Manageable?! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
A3: To "Pursue Better" means to go for your goals with focus, determination, and resources. It takes perseverance and a great support system. #masterychat#TeachBetter#TeachbetterTeam
A5: I had an amazing professor at ISU who taught me about unit planning. @RaeHughart and fellow ISU middle level Ss most likely know who I am talking about. He taught me the importance of backwards planning and starting with the end in mind. #masterychat
A5 Designing curriculum better means digging deeply into standards. Breaking them down to DOK levels, purposefully designing units and lessons that push our comfort zone. Curriculum as it has been done for years is simply not good enough anymore! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter
For me, using standards to define learning targets, using those to design assessments, and using that to design the journey, taking into account student needs. It also means showing these to the Ss to be transparent with the outcomes desired. #MasteryChat#TeachBetter
Q5 : What does it mean to Design Better? What does a Strong Curriculum Design look like & how do you make this … well… Manageable?! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
A5: To design better, utilize the strengths of the team. Too often, teachers believe that their excellent strategies are ones that “everybody knows”. What is obvious to one might be a revelation to another. Assume nothing. Share the good stuff! #MasteryChat
A5 To design better we need to think about how we will truly engage every Ss, what is the purposeful outcome for each Ss, do our Ss know the “why.” #MasteryChat
Q5 : What does it mean to Design Better? What does a Strong Curriculum Design look like & how do you make this … well… Manageable?! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
Design better to me means to use backward design. If you begin by truly getting to the core of a standard it will help you to remain focused for the kids when you teach. #MasteryChat
Q4: Pursue Better is to keep looking ahead. Don't let obstacles and naysayers keep you from following your dreams. Don't let that FIRE & Passion burnout. Find your tribe! #masterychat#TeachBetter
I had a student go from a 30-something% on his states quiz to a 60-something% after 3 days of one-on-one tutoring with me, as well as independent study and I nearly cried! Some teachers would see it as failing still- I celebrated it as a HUGE amount of growth!
A5 design better means to be willing to fail. If it took 10k tried to make the lightbulb work certainly the first 9k needed serious design improvements. design better means increased aspects of emotional intelligence since that is where vilnerabiiity & courage exist #MasteryChat
A5: Design better means making a feel and flow to your class and the curriculum that makes sense for the Ss that are in front of you. Because it worked once doesn't mean it will always work. #masterychat
A5: designing better involves backwards planning, including all areas you want to assess, introducing new material at an appropriate pace, & checks for understanding at every benchmark. Designing better also includes time for review and extensions! #MasteryChat
Great wording! It is so important to maintain your school relationships, but realize that there is a much larger, engaged community out there that will support and engage with you. #MasteryChat
#masteryChat Keeping an open-mind, a growth mindset that keeps you inquisitive and curious- being a rebel, just a bit- following your passions but also trying new things just for the experience
A4: I think connecting better means we are better listeners. It’s so easy to get caught up in the day to day stuff, and then we forget to listen to what others are really telling us. #masterychat
A5: Designing better means using formative assessments and student voice to create powerful, authentic learning experiences for students. Designing better means keeping the student that is sitting in your classroom now at the forefront, not the student of yesterday. #masterychat
A4: Don't be afraid to put yourself out there. Find ways outside the school to connect with students, families, and other community members. #masterychat#TeachBetter
A5 I think it needs to start with knowing our curriculum well and look for the best ways to deliver the curriculum to our students. Think about what we can control and not what we can't. #masterychat
A5: #masterychat
A strong curriculum is built on collaboration within the school and outside of it in the community. it’s made manageable with technology, understanding and team work
Q5 : What does it mean to Design Better? What does a Strong Curriculum Design look like & how do you make this … well… Manageable?! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
A5: In my opinion, to design better means to kill the style of silo learning. Giving every student an opportunity to learn and working together with other teachers to design the best lessons possible. #MasteryChat
A5: It means to design thoughtfully and with a lot of different inputs. It means NOT leaning on what worked last year just because it's easy. #MasteryChat
A4: Connecting better means understanding that we all have different ways of communicating and learning.
Sometimes we have to try a few different angles before we can connect with someone on a deeper level. #MasteryChat
A5: To design better, we need to observe how best designers do their work. And, it usually begins in what the user/dweller will be doing with the product or place. They actually put people into the planning. Even in the models, people are there. Student-first design. #masterychat
A4: In my personal life, "connect better" means "disconnect more"--from social media! I aim to be more present in each moment, which is an ongoing struggle for me. W/my Ss too--I can't connect it I'm overly concerned about "Covering Content" #masterychat
Q5: I had the highest improvement sixes in state testing 2 years ago. I am back in 8th grade and changing to the Grid Method and all alternative seating. That’s change! #masterychat
This week's #masterychat poll! We will talk about the results in our post-chat live video on the @teachbetterteam Facebook Page!
Which area do you think you have the most room for improvement in your journey to #TeachBetter?
A5: Have a clear and present learning goal and teach beyond the walls of your room. There are lots of great resources locally and globally. Don't be afraid to get the Ss connected to others. How do you manage this? With lots of patience and time. #masterychat
I'd love to hear more about what you are planning and working on, Brandon! What role do you see these centers playing in your classroom? Are you stuck on anything- can we work together to problem solve?
I LOVE to see teachings striving to #teachbetter! #masterychat
A5 Designing better means taking stock, reworking what needs tweaking, and sometimes scrapping the whole thing to make room for more relevant, meaningful learning! Don't be afraid to change it up, but remember not to throw the baby out with the bathwater. #masterychat
#masterychat
A4: Remaining diligent with our online and teacher facilitated professional learning communities. Being on top of what works best and how to maintain professional growth to empower the students. Aligning around crucial, globally relevant PBL.
A3: For me, pursuing Better often means feeling Worse--but just temporarily! It's doing the things that I'd sometimes rather avoid, it's forcing myself to break out of the ruts and push myself beyond my comfort zone, which isn't always a pleasant experience! #MasteryChat
A5: To design better means to create engaging, relevant lessons. Seeking resources beyond the four walls of the classroom. I plan to use @Skype more this next year to collaborate with other students and experts in their fields. #MasteryChat
I ask parents to fill out a google form at the beginning of the yr: questions include contact info, allergies or health needs, religious needs, academic concerns, things they just want me to know! You learn so much just by asking. #MasteryChat
A5: A strong curriculum design is based on the standards. It is student centered and allows for student choice and voice throughout learning experiences. It is manageable because the learning is authentic for the students. They are invested learners! #masterychat
Q5 : What does it mean to Design Better? What does a Strong Curriculum Design look like & how do you make this … well… Manageable?! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
A5: keep ss needs in mind-keep up with global career changes; teams of curriculum experts leading the way with input from ts, ps, & ss that are not afraid to adjust as needed-curriculum should be seen as a living & breathing part of education #masteryChat#sd113a
Q5 : What does it mean to Design Better? What does a Strong Curriculum Design look like & how do you make this … well… Manageable?! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
Well said! It’s easy to close the door and do your thing. So important to get off the porch #GOTP and take healthy risks by building your PLN and talking/learning. This will likely require getting out of your comfort zone. #Masterychat
A5: The better we know our Ss the better we are able to design meaningful and engaging learning experiences. I often think, “Why this, for these Ss, at this time?” My answer to that gets better and better throughout the school year. #MasteryChat
A5: Design better happens when you follow Covey's advice and begin with the end in mind. Where do we want students to be? How do the standards guide our decisions? What assessments help us monitor their progress? #masterychat
#MasteryChat This all comes down to an ability to recognize the need to delegate and ask for help. To understand your limited time and not taking on too much. We all want to be superheroes but even many superheroes have a team or league they call family
A5: Better design is about students and their experiences - not about me and mine. Do I want to sit in my class? Do my students find value in their learning? For me, the best design happens when I adjustment my plans based on what my students need. #masterychat
A5: A strong curriculum design takes into account want needs to be taught, but also allows for student centered learning. Designing better means teaching kids what they need to know when they need to know it. #masterychat#ElonEd
#MasteryChat - A5 -I think that curriculum is always changing and we should always be reevaluating if what we are teaching is the best for kids. I think it is too much sometimes to think we are going to change everything all at once - setting reasonable goals is a good first step
Q5 : What does it mean to Design Better? What does a Strong Curriculum Design look like & how do you make this … well… Manageable?! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
Q5 : What does it mean to Design Better? What does a Strong Curriculum Design look like & how do you make this … well… Manageable?! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
Being Better+Managing Better+Pursuing Better+Connecting Better=Designing Better. When you bring everything together, you will definitely have a better and stronger curriculum design. #masterychat
I'd love to hear more of your thoughts on this, Blake! What are some strategies for knowledge acquisition that you love? How do you assess? #Masterychat
A5: design better means that we have both the individual students and specific outcomes in mind when we create curriculum. Not just academic mastery, but the kind of people we want our students to become #masterychat
A5: To me, it means THINK! Before teaching, I was a sound designer. I could design sound systems for the same space in 100 different ways. Nothing in design is one size fits all #masterychat#teachbetter
Q5 : What does it mean to Design Better? What does a Strong Curriculum Design look like & how do you make this … well… Manageable?! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
A6: To assess better means to keep in mind whether the Ss are learning and showing mastery, not simply to tally up scores. It again means being thoughtful and reflective in building assessments and then reading them back. #masterychat
A3: For me, pursuing Better often means feeling Worse--but just temporarily! It's doing the things that I'd sometimes rather avoid, it's forcing myself to break out of the ruts and push myself beyond my comfort zone, which isn't always a pleasant experience! #MasteryChat
Sorry I’m joining so late! A5: Begin with the end in mind! Know the end goals, plan some wiggle room, and design so that student can connect to self, content, and world. #masterychat
A5a Design better has more to do w/ how Ts facilitate Ss discovery of ideas/phenomenon It has less to do with how we traditionally teach...better is in the process #MasteryChat
A5: A strong curriculum is rigorous yet has entry points (or scaffolds) to get all students to the content and skills they need. Differentiation is key here; many of my Ss have interrupted schooling and get some tasks that others can skip if they've mastered it.
#MasteryChat
A5. Design better- Use creativity and take risks in learning and teaching with your Ss. Don't be afraid to try new things! Change is good! Growth will occur! We learn from our failures by problem solving! #masterychat
Can we just take a minute and express gratitude to @RaeHughart? She has hosted three chats this week and has absolutely rocked each one of them. She truly has an undeniable passion that is unmatched. #masterychat
A5 Designing better means to plan how to get to your curriculum expectations with your students needs and learning styles in mind. Making the curriculum accessible to all #MasteryChat
A favorite quote. Love that you included "mistakes" in this definition. Some people assume at face value better means immediate improvement over last time, especially in our quick & immediate gratification world. Patience is key to better. #MasteryChat@iamtikasumpter@RaeHughart
Q1 : Each question is going to ask you about performing a task or skill BETTER! So, to start us off, what does the word “Better” mean to you?!? #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
A6 - Assessing better means making assessment part of your classroom and knowing what every Ss knows, doesn’t know and how to bridge that gap. It doesn’t mean finding something and using it but creating authentic, aligned and assessments that truly show mastery! #masterychat
A6 - Retrieval practice...low or no stakes...spacing out the assessments...doing it often and using it as a tool for students to understand where the holes are in their learning. #MasteryChat
A6 - Assessing better does not mean technology. It means being able to understand if a student understands the concepts and can apply them. That does not necessarily mean a test or essay, but a myriad of other assessments. #MasteryChat
Just started testing it out...Very much like Peardeck or Nearpod, educators can apply for a free account...Log-in is very easy, its' the same link every time, you just switch presentations. It's worth the look. #MasteryChat
In reply to
@kristi_daws, @jamesvarlack, @TechieTeachOtt, @Stella_Pollard, @kaseysmithpd
A6: Assessments mean nothing if they are lacking in validity or if they aren't measuring what we are trying to measure. What's the point? Are the results reliable? Do you know what you're measuring? Are you sure? #masteryChat#teachbetter
A6: Assessment is feedback! It’s a reflection of where our Ss are in there journey to mastery and informs us as to what topics we could teach better! #masterychat
I love this Q! This past year, I changed my assessments to fit my students ability levels. Students received assessments that were made for them. First, I started with my IEP kiddos, but then I realized why just them. Some of my lower kiddos received the same test. #MasteryChat
#Masterychat For me- grades are never final- they are flexible footing that just need proper footwear to improve upon. I assess a lot through collaborative assessmentsusing our graffiti boards & scrambles. Also more reflection and less m/c questions
Can we just take a minute and express gratitude to @RaeHughart? She has hosted three chats this week and has absolutely rocked each one of them. She truly has an undeniable passion that is unmatched. #masterychat
A6: To assess better means to focus on growth and more on the process versus the product. I had a professor who told me that I was making growth and mentioned me that another Ss did not know me or my ability like she did. Writing that brings tears to my eyes. #masterychat
The only true assessment is the one that is ACTUALLY used and used constructively! It can then be used to TEACH what is needed and not just filed because it's what we "have to do!"#MasteryChat
A6 - Assessing better does not mean technology. It means being able to understand if a student understands the concepts and can apply them. That does not necessarily mean a test or essay, but a myriad of other assessments. #MasteryChat
Design lessons that share the teaching & Learning with all stakeholders, curriculum design has to be relevant, fluid&flexible, woven with high expectations, lifelong applications & accessible to ALL #MasteryChat
A6: Remember that assessing does not necessarily have to be in the form of a test. We can assess student mastery with the demonstration of knowledge in other creative ways. #masterychat
@TechieTeachOtt I think this may answer some of the questions you just asked.
I have more specific ways I use retrieval practice, concrete/abstract examples, dual coding, spaced practice, etc. on my blog:
https://t.co/EJp11sZu1q#MasteryChat
A6 - Retrieval practice...low or no stakes...spacing out the assessments...doing it often and using it as a tool for students to understand where the holes are in their learning. #MasteryChat
A5 It means get out of the TE. Plan based our Ss and the standard. Start small, focus on planning one area first. Then work on replicating in other areas. #MasteryChat
Q5 : What does it mean to Design Better? What does a Strong Curriculum Design look like & how do you make this … well… Manageable?! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
A6: Assessing better means tracking progress over time and adjusting instructional goals as needed based on the assessment. Assessing better means looking deeper at the scores and analyzing individual mistakes. This makes it worthwhile for Ss and Ts. #masteryChat
A6 “assess better” means to take the position of a leader who is willing to collaborate. To allow followers to take leadership roles. To encourage leaders to take follower roles on occasion. To understand that 2 heads are better than 1. #MasteryChat
A6a: Think about what you REALLY want to measure - then give students opportunities to show you. Multiple choice tests demonstrate very little. #masterychat
A6: #masterychat
Make it meaningful. Assessments should be rigorous but relevant to living and growing I. The 21st century... like worksheets & text book review questions! 🤢 NOT!! Even saying that made me feel a little gross!! 😳
Assess better means to set the bar high for EVERY SINGLE STUDENT! If you believe that the sky is the limit for kids- you will be blown away by what the kids will achieve! #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat - A6 - Assessment should be a part of the learning process, not just a data point to assign to a child. Assessment should be a view into a Ss progress towards mastery and an opportunity to help/reteach/learn from mistakes before continuing on the path towards mastery
A5: Designing a better curriculum for me is all about understanding and including your audience. No one knows your students' needs better than your students.
Include them in everything you do and make learning a team effort. #MasteryChat
Q5 : What does it mean to Design Better? What does a Strong Curriculum Design look like & how do you make this … well… Manageable?! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
A.4 it takes time to connect well. Once trust is developed the connect is better. For that all our children should play in our minds and hearts. Once they understand we are there for them they feel good. So its being with them most of the time. #Teachbetter#MasteryChat
A5: plant students in rich lessons filled with standards, authentic purpose, personal interest...add hydrating intervention based on data analysis of individual seeds, set them in a warm community of support...and watch them bloom. #MasteryChat
A6: Assessment takes on many forms. Be creative, think outside the box, drop the paper and pencil. Allow children to demonstrate learning in a variety of ways. #MasteryChat#ElonEd
A6: Assessing better involves ditching Scantrons and implementing authentic evaluations. I believe students should have some say in how they think they can best demonstrate their learning and what they know! #MasteryChat
A6: Assess better with a backward planning design. Determine what you want students to show you they know and can do on the assessment, and then make your instruction aligned and relevant to their eventual performance on that assessment. #masterychat
A6 #masterychat For me all of these skills require an awareness- a mindfulness that slows you down and let’s you respond not react, Think before you speak, intently listen and most importantly do what is best for students, period.
A6: Assess better means to create authentic assessments. These assessments should be linked to the students’ needs and should be again, thoughtful and mindful. These assessments should reflect what was taught and should show what should be intervened. #masterychat
A6b: Acknowledge that assessment - like success and growth - needs to be a process, not a one and done. The most important learning and happens in the reflection and revision stages - don't rob students of those opportunities! #masterychat
Agreed! It is so funny when a student cannot pass a test, but then you talk to them and ask them about the information and they are able to state it and apply it. It directly shows that a test is not necessarily the best way to assess a student's knowledge. #MasteryChat
A1: To me, “Better” represents growth. Being able to recognize and acknowledge what you need to improve on and applying that to whatever the skill may be is “Better”. #masteryChat#TeachBetter
A6 So many of our assessments now give us irrelevant data or data that we simply don't use to change instruction. It's going to be hard to create these meaningful assessments, but we can't use that as an excuse! I like to build mine with tiered DOK ?s! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter
A5) Reading & writing in my classroom—personally speaking—is a lifestyle, a way of being. That’s why I’m returning to the Nancie Atwell workshop model. I lost my way, but I’m returning to my roots: treating my kids as creative writers. #Masterychat
A4: Building genuine and meaningful relationships wherever you are. Find some common interests or passion and building on it. #masterychat#TeachBetter#TeachbetterTeam
This assessment question has me geeking out. I love assessment and assessment data and formative assessment and summative assessment and preassessment and.... well, I think you get the idea... #masterychat
A6 Assessing better doesn't have to mean testing/quizzing! We need to challenge ourselves to evaluate the quality of learning through a variety of methods so we get a full picture of what Ss know, instead of basing it on a single moment #MasteryChat
#Masterychat For me- grades are never final- they are flexible footing that just need proper footwear to improve upon. I assess a lot through collaborative assessments using our graffiti boards & scrambles. Also more reflection and less m/c questions
Q5 : What does it mean to Design Better? What does a Strong Curriculum Design look like & how do you make this … well… Manageable?! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
A6 Assess better means to have clear purpose for assessment, knowing the different types and which to use, understanding students’ needs and using data to provide what they need #masteryChat
A6: Looping back to the two Es in "bEttEr" from the first response this evening. If assessment piece reveals something other than that for which we were looking, to which of thes E can we return? Exposure (meaningful and voluminous) or Experience (more and variant)? #masterychat
A5 Dint rush into a new curriculum Think it through Incorporate scaffolding meaningful authentic assessments and rigor Include parents students and community members in the process #masterychat
A6 Giving focused and individual attention to any student...we blanket cover too much in order to save time...what impact could we have if we have each Ss dedicated purposeful feedback #MasteryChat
I am getting to that point also. I want to reach a no-HW stage sometime in the next 2-3 years, but my time management hasn't gotten quite that good yet. #MasteryChat
#masterychat
A5: Design that fully empowers the students to be clear about content/language objectives within PBL or inquiry driven environment. Allowing teachers to consistently collect formative feedback & have meaningful conversations w students on deep learning = joy
A6: Assessing better is about being very purposeful about what you're assessing and why. If your goal is to see what students know about cells, don't ask them to write an essay unless you also are trying to assess their writing skills. Be as targeted as you can.
#MasteryChat
A6. Assess better- is to have Ss show or demonstrate their learning to you in various forms! What different ways can our Ss demonstrate learning through PBL, videos, speeches, teaching, etc. #masterychat
Never too many doors! Each one is an opportunity for me to explore new ideas and challenge my thinking, ultimately getting me where I want to go (even if I didn't know I wanted to go there when I started!) #masterychat
A6: assessing better doesn’t necessarily earn designing better tests. You can assess in a variety of ways. Authentic assessments can be great! #masterychat
A7 - Teach Better means that you embody that teaching is a journey of growth that never ends and you are constantly seeking to provide the best possible experience for the students you have! Never stop growing, never stop improving always focus on getting BETTER! #masterychat
A7: To harness all the resources and thinking you have been doing on a daily basis, and to reach every student on a relationship basis consistently. And to keep that energy and optimism up!! #MasteryChat
Well everyone, I am sad I missed tonight’s chat. We just got hammered with a crazy thunderstorm. Quarter size hail, wind damage and no power. Will read through it tonight #masterychat
A7: To Teach better is to learn better. Everyday you learn something new. This impacts your teaching. Through reflection, you can “teach better” using new perspectives, mindsets to change the quality of your teaching. #MasteryChat
A7 - Teaching with student learning at the forefront of everything.
Not being sucked in by the latest gadget/tool/strategy that may look 'fun', but doesn't improve learning.
#MasteryChat
A7 Teaching better means looking at every aspect of teaching w/ fresh eyes. Asking ourselves if it supports innovative learning & then being willing to change it if it doesn't. It doesn't have to be done all at once, it just has to be done continuously! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter
A7 #teachbetter is a mantra, it’s a reminder that we do it for the kids. A reminder to bring positivity, energy and support to every class! #masterychat
A7: To teach better is like a roadmap. We have tools at our fingertips, but it is up to us to reach out, connect with our amazing #PLN, and strive to improve because our students absolutely deserve our best. #masterychat
A7: Know yourself. Actively seek out your deficiencies. This year, commit to making them a bit less deficient. Above all, don’t compare yourself to others. Compare you to you. #masterychat
#2 I told my husband I needed a dog. I am good at taking care of my kids, my husband, my students, my home, etc. I’m not always good at taking care of me, but I will walk the dog which means I take time out for me. Managing better to means finding a better balance #masterychat
A7: To Teach better means to know that no matter how many times you fall, it’s how you get back up that matters most! Try new things, don’t fear failure and always put relationships first! #masterychat
I LOVE IT! It is a mastery framework that sound similar to your classroom vision, but makes it manageable everyday for you (and students!) There is so much information at https://t.co/YgTo1An9JO - but I know a BUNCH of teachers that are using the system in this chat! #masterychat
A7 Teach better is to look at our classroom, not as ours, but as a shared learning space between Ts & Ss By setting an engaging environment we make teaching/learning better easier for all #MasteryChat
A6 individualize the assessments give students a choice and a voice use feedback and reflection make it authentic and meaningful don't access for the simple reason of getting a grade make sure the assessment is attached to a meaningful goal #masterychat
A7 - It is a series of verbs:
Engaging
Listening
Evaluating
Working
Overloading
Sharing
Striving
Laughing
Hoping
Building
Revising
Writing
And so many more. All it has to do with what we want our students to do: grow. #MasteryChat
A7 “teach better” to view yourself as a mentor not an instructor. An instructor’s words stay in a kid’s ears for the semester. A mentor’s words echo in a kid’s ears for a lifetime. #MasteryChat
A6: Assessing better means going beyond just grading.
It's comparing assignments to lessons to verify alignment.
It's analyzing student performance on an individual level to identify trends.
And once again, it's about including your students in the process. #MasteryChat
A7. Teach better means to teach like you will never arrive or be perfect. Teaching better is continual growth because "better" involves the active decision to pursue the unknown. #masterychat
Yes!!! feedback for students but just as importantly ask your students for feedback this is how a classroom stays fresh & meaningful for students #masteryChat
A7: To teach better is to lean into the idea that teaching is an adventure. There's always a new road to turn down, a new experience to try out, new people to meet, and new cultures to explore. #masterychat
A7 #teachbetter is a mantra, it’s a reminder that we do it for the kids. A reminder to bring positivity, energy and support to every class! #masterychat
I tried to do no HW with my fourth graders; parents complained to my principal and I was told I had to send HW. So I came up with a HW menu, let students decide with parents what to do, and didn't grade anything. #masterychat
In reply to

A7~ teach better means to give all you’ve got, reflect often & fix what doesn’t work...& most importantly, seek the support, guidance, ideas of others ~ no more working in silos!!!! #continuouslearner#MasteryChat
A6: assess to evaluate, evaluate to reflect, reflect to grow, grow to improve, improve tomorrow’s lesson to further student growth.
Or just do it as often as needed to input numbers to follow district grading policy. #MasteryChat
A7: teaching better is constantly learning, improving, and never settling for mediocrity. We need to learn the way we want our students to learn...and to apply it just as well as we hope they do too! #masterychat
Jumping in Late! A1: Better can be when you learned from something and tried again w/ improvement/s. Continually making progress. Multiple meaning word depending on tense! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
Agreed. I just worry about taking on too much, but I agree that every door and opportunity, no matter how challenging, makes me be a better teacher and understand more deeply the community I serve. #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat - A7 - Teaching better is once again subjective because every classroom is unique within itself, which is what is great about this profession. So, teaching better means reflecting on your practice and striving to be a better teacher because #KidsDeserveIt!
I'm now letting Ss begin their HW in class whenever I can. I only assign about 3-4 HW per unit anyway, which is way down from previous years. #MasteryChat
A7: To teach better means to build relationships first and foremost, learn your students interests and create engaging and interactive learning experiences. #masterychat
A7: To teach better is pretty simple- get better at your practice every day. Everyone in this chat can already check today off for showing passion and interest, even when it's "not required" :) #MasteryChat
A7: As a first year teacher, I know that I will look back and know that I could teach better. That is the beauty of our profession. I am just starting out, and seeing incredible teachers like all of you sometimes leads me to self-doubt, but we are better together. #masterychat
A7 - It is a series of verbs:

And so many more. All it has to do with what we want our students to do: grow. #MasteryChat
A7: Teaching better means doing what is right by the learners. We are the professionals and it might require more time or work but it is what needs to happen if it is what best for the Ss. #MasteryChat
A7: To teach better, one must be willing to grow and make learning real for students. Teaching better isn't, "Who has the prettiest classroom?" or "Who uses the most edtech?" Teaching better means always thinking, "How does this lesson benefit ALL of my studnets?" #MasteryChat
A7 #TeachBetter is not about teaching perfectly. It's not about never making mistakes. It's about constantly striving to improve. Doesn't need to be huge improvements every day, just constantly tinkering, learning, and growing. #masterychat
A HUGE thank you to @teachbetterteam for allowing me to host #MasteryChat this week! There has been so many exciting announcements and it was outstanding to be a part of the fun! Love this chat so much! #TeachBetter
A7: To Teach better means to know that no matter how many times you fall, it’s how you get back up that matters most! Try new things, don’t fear failure and always put relationships first! #masterychat
A6b: Better assessment is also ongoing, descriptive, and timely. It happens as Ss learn and helps them learn better because the feedback is meaningful and actionable. #MasteryChat
I love the idea of doing a HW menu. I can't get away with not grading it, but I always let the kids revise their work until the end of the unit. "Bettering" their understanding. #MasteryChat

A7. Teach better- Never stop learning in methods of teaching! Things are constantly changing with new ideas! Don't be afraid to take risks, try new things, explore different types of PD. #masterychat
A7: You know I am going to do it again.
Two Es in bEttEr: Exposure and Experience.
Get connected. Gather ideas. Go back into the room. Try that something new. Reflect upon it. Share it out.
Repeat.
#masterychat
#masterychat Teach them how to teach themselves- never sage on the stage but guide on the side- build strong relationships and always do what is best for students- listen to them- give them a voice- create a safe haven for learning- and be silent and watch the magic
A7 teach better means to continue being learners ourselves, it’s ongoing growth, looking to improve, r reflect and ask students for feedback too, how do they learn best, what are ways our teaching helped, being open to new ideas and methods #masterychat
A7. To teach better means to be a perpetual student. Learning more about our students, our craft, our content and the world around us makes us better teachers. #MasteryChat
A7 Teaching better is taking what often seem like disconnected or onerous components and reworking them to more effectively help our Ss understand the joy and purpose of learning, and to help them take those skills far beyond the classroom #masterychat
A7 never stop trying to improve continually participate in professional learning opportunities build your pln take risks take chances be flexible and confident listen watch read participate and ask questions. Don't stop moving forward! #masterychat
Before you log off tonight, will you consider helping 2 first year teachers attend the #gridmethod conference where we can learn to teach better? It would be a dream come true. Thank you for all your love! https://t.co/YskN0DwA6j@MsJachymiak#masterychat
A4: Consider your text choices. They should be relevant. We aren’t teaching the text, yet using the text to engage. If a primary source document is stiff, pair it with a modern current article. Stay connected. #masterychat
Agreed! Immaturity leads us to believe in order to pursue better we have to do it on our own, when in actuality, we should siphon the wisdom of our #PLN & allow them to help us grow! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
A7: I think it means that there is always improvement in our teaching. No one is perfect, and using all of our resources to help us #TeachBetter! Gaining so many ideas from teachers on Twitter!
A6: Using the many different forms of assessments to guide your instruction. #formative5 breaks down the assessments that we probably do everyday but don't even realize it. #masterychat#TeachBetter#TeachbetterTeam
A2: I manage better when I have support which in turn helps me up my game. Support can be from people, technology, or something that eases the load in some way! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
I cringe a bit when we talk about "teaching better." Better than who-what? While we constantly adapt to evolving needs that doesn't mean we used to be worse IMHO. #masterychat
A7: Teaching better is all about analyzing your assessment results and your student feedback and making adjustments to improve your students' learning.
Be sure they know that their feedback is valuable and let them know how you're changing to serve them better #MasteryChat
Its alright, I probably could have taken the time to do that, but summer projects.
You do get a lot of credit for the Liz Lemon gif though. #MasteryChat
#TheGridMethod is an approach to planning and implementing student paced mastery learning. It is a framework that Ts use to make personalized learning work in real classrooms with real Ss. It is differentiation at its best! Check it out at https://t.co/myvJfXIBBK#Masterychat
#MasteryChat - Just keep it about the kids and you'll do great. My advice - focus on classroom management in your first year. Sure, what you're teaching is important too, but if you can't control the class, you can't teach the subject. Classroom mgmt is step 1
A7: the only way I know how to teach better is to recognize that I know less. I know less about something than my coworker/Admin/Student. So I ask for help. By knowing less, I reach out more. You may like your reflection, but there is no growth in stagnant water. #MasteryChat
A7: First of all (maybe foremost), if you're a first year teacher and you're already joining conversations like #masterychat or #g2great, you're doing something I waited five years into my practice to do. Connecting at Twitter with EDU-People is a super-smart, first-year move.
A7: I once heard someone say that you should strive to make your today better than your yesterday and your tomorrow better than today. If you commit to doing that in your classroom, you are surely embracing the teach better mantra! #masterychat
A3: Pursuit requires determination, when you are determined heaven help anyone or anything that gets in your way (unless they offer support in your pursuit)! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter#TeachBetterTeam
A7: Never stop learning #lifelonglearner. Be willing to be "real", make mistakes and share them. Teach the students not just the curriculum. Model learning! #masterychat#ElonEd
