The #michED chat is a grassroots effort dedicated to giving teachers, students, and parents across Michigan a bigger voice in the conversation about education in our state. We welcome all voices through a variety of projects, media, and social networking. We’re trying to address educational issues through apolitical conversation, spreading ideas and stories of success from Michigan classrooms across the state, and helping teachers and students regain the courage to connect and demonstrate that schools in Michigan are creating amazing opportunities for learning. We want the face and voice of education in Michigan to be a mural of shared experiences and positive examples of connected learning.
Hello everyone! Welcome to the #MichEd chat on Digital Citizenship! Thank you for having me as your guest moderator. Let's see who is here....
Don't forget to use #MichEd and #DigCit in your replies.
Thanks so much for joining me, Gail! Sorry I had a brain fart on the webinar last week and mistook you for someone else. How could I ever??! #DigCit#miched
Hello, my name is Madison Tedora and I am currently taking classes at Siena Heights to become an elementary teacher. I am reading the Pendragon Series #MichEd
Hi #MichED. Keith, EdTech Consultant in Grand Rapids. Currently reading Mismatch: How Inclusion Shapes Design and Digital Citizenship in Action (of course) #DigCit
Thanks so much for joining me, Gail! Sorry I had a brain fart on the webinar last week and mistook you for someone else. How could I ever??! #DigCit#miched
Hi everyone! I'm a Judy, library & instructional technology consultant for Wayne RESA. I'm currently reading Learning Supercharged and No Fear Coding! #miched#DigCit
Hello everyone, I am Danielle. I am a Social Studies major with a minor in Elementary Education at Siena Heights University. I am currently reading The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult. #MichEd
I guess I should introduce myself too. I am a high school librarian in the western suburbs of Chicago. The kids at school have me binge watching RIVERDALE of all things! #DigCit#miched
As we get started, each question will begin with a Q1. You can reply by using A1 at the start of your Tweet and make sure to include #MichEd and #DigCit so we can all see your responses. Don't forget to reply to one another as well! First question in less than a minute.
Q1: To help develop a shared understanding of ‘digital citizenship’ as a concept, please complete this sentence:
I want my students to be digital citizens who can/are ____________. #MichEd#DigCit
A1: I want want my students to be digital citizens who are ready and willing to confront hate speech & other acts of intolerance by crossing the line from bystander to upstander, changing school culture and climate where/when needed. #michED#DigCit
A1 I want my students to be digital citizens who can/are able to know when is the right time to use technology as well as not abuse it. I would like them to help others with their knowledge. #MichEd
A1: I want my students to be digital citizens who can stand up for what they believe in, be respectful and open to others opinions, and be the change they wish to see in the world. #miched
A1 I want my students to be digital citizens who can/are able to know when is the right time to use technology as well as not abuse it. I would like them to help others with their knowledge. #MichEd
A1: I want my students to be able to think critically and evaluate what they see on line as well as understand what they online can have a lasting impact on others. #digcit#miched
A1: I want my students to be digital citizens who are able to utilize technology in more efficient and positive ways, whether it is connecting with other students or teachers to gain knowledge. #MichEd
For many, Googling can lead to learning! I want to teach my students how to find the BEST resources out their to meet their information needs #DigCit#miched
A1: I want my students to be able to think critically and evaluate what they see on line as well as understand what they online can have a lasting impact on others. #digcit#miched
A1: Joining in a bit late! My name is Kelly Hincks. I am a librarian for prek-2nd graders in Bloomfield Hills, MI.
I want my students to be digital citizens who are aware of what they share and how they share it. #miched#DigCit
I understand that, but Googling isn't problem solving, it isn't creating, it isn't immersing. Similar to math classes and just providing an answer without being able to explain the process to determining it. #miched
A1: Joining in a bit late! My name is Kelly Hincks. I am a librarian for prek-2nd graders in Bloomfield Hills, MI.
I want my students to be digital citizens who are aware of what they share and how they share it. #miched#DigCit
It's so important to teach students when the right time for technology is. It's great to use when it's helpful, but sometimes the answer is to do it instead of look it up! #miched
A2: we have a staff member who teaches these in the Elementary School mainly with some elements in the MS, beyond that it is up to the teachers #miched
A2 I believe that nobody should "own" the lessons. In a school you should be working as a collaborative team when and where to incorporate it into the classroom/lessons. #MichEd
A2 It is an open conversation right now. At the elementary level, we don’t yet have a plan, but a serious need. So answer is, “in the works.” #miched Planning a series of parent nights to get started on social media
A2: We are hoping to see a shift in our district from #DigCit lessons being taught as stand alone lessons during advisory period or computer lab time to a more integrated approach. We are also reaching out to see if/how other districts evaluate #digcit on report cards. #michED
Digital Citizenship has many components: including positive digital footprint, learning how to communicate online, internet safety, information literacy including creative credit and copyright. I want students to have knowledge in all of these #digcit#miched
A2: In my experience, #DigCit typically lands in the hands of the technology teacher or library media specialist. Starting to see some teachers start to incorporate it into their curriculum. Look forward to when that is standard. #miched
A2: All teachers should incorporate some type of technology in their classroom. I run into many adults who don't know how to use different Microsoft programs and that blows my mind. I believe technology is a core part of their education especially in todays society. #MichEd
A1 are productive members of society that understand the concepts of equity, and equality while using their digital resources for good and not evil! #MichEd
I understand the home repair example, but even then I have someone with experience check my work, like a teacher to a student. Additionally, Googling is starting to replace important skills that require no content knowledge: reading, processing, and creating. #miched
A2: In my experience, #DigCit typically lands in the hands of the technology teacher or library media specialist. Starting to see some teachers start to incorporate it into their curriculum. Look forward to when that is standard. #miched
Absolutely! They need to learn how to search efficiently for reliable resources and how to evaluate them. They also need to learn how to use resources like @meldotorg and other databases. #miched#DigCit
In reply to
@DrKMattson, @GeorgeHistory, @meldotorg
A2: In the districts I support presently this is handled by the technology teacher but slowly moving towards classroom teachers. It’s a team effort. #miched#digcit
A2: Honestly, I do not really think it has ever been explicity said who "owns" them. Clearly, this is something that has to be discussed moving forward. I can say that as a library department we have discussed how we are teaching them. #digcit#miched
Q3. A lot of digital citizenship curriculum focus on personal behaviors over skill development. What are some of the skills digital citizens need to be successful in global communities? How are you helping students gain those skills?
#MichEd#DigCit
A3: Using technology to take student voices beyond the classroom and zip code is a priority. Today thru tools like blogging, videoconferencing, VoiceThreading, etc., Ss can effectively read, write and communicate with authentic audiences on topics they care about. #michED#DigCit
A2: Positive role modeling of Digital Citizenship should be “owned” by everyone in the school and the responsibility for instruction should be shared when possible. #DigCit#MichEd
A2: Media specialists lead this work in their schools, but all educators need to "own" the #DigCit lessons. In essence, we are teaching our students how to be good citizens with or without technology. #MichEd
A3: Digital citizens need to be have an idea of a fluid world. I think digital citizens can learn to be more resilient because they are used to change. #MichEd
A3: Proper and respectful communication, the internet is a cold place and many things are taken out of context. Evaluating resources: Google v. Google Scholar, Wiki anything. Utilize UDLs that allow for students to explore based on interest. #miched
I would agree with you that it should be integrated and part of everyone's curriculum! However, I do think someone usually has to start talking about the importance and how/what should be taught in order for everyone to begin to incorporate it. #miched#digcit
A3: I think that digital citizens need to know how to live the same life online that they live offline. It's super important for people to be the same people the same ways. If they have one identity online and another irl, then who are they really? It's super important! #miched
A3: Ss need to see what responsible online communication looks like. We can give them practice by setting up online classroom communities #miched#digcit
This is a HUGE problem! How do we teach kids what "being nice" means? They will encounter people they disagree with, so how do we model respectful discourse both on and offline? #DigCit#MichEd
I’ve had the same experience as a student, mainly the library media specialist took care of #DigCit . However, they never went beyond “being nice and being safe” online. Many websites and topics were blocked and avoided instead of taught how to deal with them responsibly.
A3 Being able to understand different cultures and communication styles. Going over these topics over time I hope to introduce new skills to them. #MichEd
I would agree with you that it should be integrated and part of everyone's curriculum! However, I do think someone usually has to start talking about the importance and how/what should be taught in order for everyone to begin to incorporate it. #miched#digcit
Great idea! Ss also need a safe space to make mistakes and grow with guidance and mentors. Classroom web presences and discussion boards are a great tool for that work #DigCit#miched
A3: Ss need to see what responsible online communication looks like. We can give them practice by setting up online classroom communities #miched#digcit
That's a good question! I'm a firm believer in being the same person (and saying the same things) no matter where I am. So if I wouldn't say/do it in real life, I personally won't say/do it online. I hope to model that for my students. #miched
A3 quick list of skills required for digital citizenship: honesty, integrity, critical thinking, high level reading skills, flexibility & resourcefulness #MichEd
Q4. Digital citizens should have opportunities to explore digital ethics.
For example, “Should the government be able to access data collected by private companies?”.
What are some areas of digital ethics you think students should explore?
#MichEd#DigCit
I would agree with you that it should be integrated and part of everyone's curriculum! However, I do think someone usually has to start talking about the importance and how/what should be taught in order for everyone to begin to incorporate it. #miched#digcit
A3: To be successful in a global society one must be understanding, open and willing to learn about people who are different from them. Ts have to model this for students in their own practice. #digcit#MichEd
A3: Students need opportunities to practice online citizenship in safe environments. Communication and critical thinking skills, as well as evaluating information effectively are all part of good digital citzenship #MichEd#DigCit
A4: Middle School students love discussing the ethics of sharing music. We look at cases of copyright infringement of songs. It gets them thinking and talking, #miched#digcit
I agree. It's hard to have crucial conversations and model appropriate behavior if our environments are devoid of the communities our student are (or will soon be) living in. #MichEd#digcit
A3: #DigCit Communicating effectively online! In order to “be safe,” we were encouraged to avoid communicating online. I do agree with this to a certain degree, as teachers we should model effective online communication such as Google+ connecting with other classrooms #miched
A3: I believe digital citizens need to be more appropriate and understanding of who their community consists of. Its important for me to teach students which types of websites and articles to believe & what not to believe because the internet is open to everyone to post. #MichEd
A4: We've been talking a lot about activism vs. slacktivism (online activism) in government courses. Do our digital efforts make a difference in areas of social justice? #MichEd#DigCitKidsBook
A3: We have to give our students lots of opportunites to practice being good and respectful online citizens in authentic and meaningful ways. The conversation needs to be woven into the fabric of all they do. #MichEd#MichEd
A4 I would agree plagiarism is an issue that cannot be covered enough. Ss don’t have a problem over-sharing so they don’t understand “borrowing” isn’t allowed without credit. The value of hard work has to be connected from their work to others. #MichEd
Q4. Digital citizens should have opportunities to explore digital ethics.
For example, “Should the government be able to access data collected by private companies?”.
What are some areas of digital ethics you think students should explore?
#MichEd#DigCit
I have these conversations with parents at parent nights!
I ask my own kids before I post any images of them to my own social accounts. It's a way to respect them and model the courtesy I want them to extend to others #MichEd#DigCit
A4: Some area of ethics ALL students need to explore is plagiarism. Even in college, I know students who don't understand how to quote and how not to plagiarize. This is important for all students to learn and need to learn at a young age. #MichEd
A4: Lots to explore with Ss regarding digital ethics. Copyright, music, images, sharing information, etc. are great starting points. Important for students to reflect on whether or not they should do something just because they can! #DigCit#MichEd
A3 At the elementary level, I'm at a loss. I can show and demonstrate. But we aren't 1 to 1 and phones aren't permitted in the classrooms/library #MichEd
A4: I think that Ss are seeing that online activities are making a difference in social justice. The Parkland shooting was one example and Ss around the nation got involved. #miched#DigCit
A4: Some area of ethics ALL students need to explore is plagiarism. Even in college, I know students who don't understand how to quote and how not to plagiarize. This is important for all students to learn and need to learn at a young age. #MichEd
A4: High school genetics students have been doing a ton of research into the ethical questions around at-home DNA testing kits and consumer privacy. It's been awesome! #DigCit#miched
Such a great question to explore - making Ss aware of lines between slacktivism and online mob mentality ‘twitter do your thing’ IMO is NOT activism and is more about shaming #miched
A4: We've been talking a lot about activism vs. slacktivism (online activism) in government courses. Do our digital efforts make a difference in areas of social justice? #MichEd#DigCitKidsBook
@DrKMattson A1: I want my students to be digital citizens who can can create thoughtful and empathetic rhetoric to improve our world as a whole! #Miched
A4: We've been talking a lot about activism vs. slacktivism (online activism) in government courses. Do our digital efforts make a difference in areas of social justice? #MichEd#DigCitKidsBook
The kids are great at sorting out the ways that social media can give a voice to the typically marginalized (age, SES, race, etc.) and raise issues that those in power may have typically ignored. #DigCit#miched
Q3 #MichED It is typical to say we are training students how to have good #DigCit but schools don’t want to offer grace to mess up and learn. Meaning we have so many filters they can’t screw up and learn from the mistakes. Once they are adults they pay the cost. Help them learn.
@DrKMattson A2: While I am not a teacher yet, I have not seen digital etiquette talked about in my placements. In my college courses, however, it is always a hot topic thanks to my instructors. #Miched
Agree. Students need to learn what is and what isn't correct paraphrasing. Sometimes plagiarism is blatant but other times plagiarism is unintended because they haven't explicitly been taught paraphrasing skills and how to put something in their own words. #miched#digcit
@DrKMattson A3: Digital citizens need to be aware of secular ideas that go outside of the environment they were raised in. As a future teacher, I plan on exposing my students to different cultures, belief systems, and societies as a whole. #Miched
Q5. A hot topic in digital citizenship right now is balance.
How do you balance time online and off?
What does “balance” mean to you?
How might you help student reflect on their digital practices and achieve a healthy balance?
#MichEd#DigCit
When surveyed, my students said they like the @scratch community because scratchers typically come together to help each other or to support each other when something negative happens in the world. #digcit#miched
A5: When I am at home and my kids are up I don't do anything involving work, they are my passion. I set firm "office hours" for when I will respond to emails, messages, etc. We all need boundaries, otherwise you never really leave work. #miched
A5 Balance means to incorporate technology maybe 1-2 times a day. In a preschool room I'm observing in we give technology to 4 students throughout the day. We are trying to get them to become more active and hands on with materials than being glued to technology. #MichEd
We are learning a lot about how to be responsible online, especially focusing on the legal and ethical use of digital information! Copyright, Creative Commons, and Public Domain #miched
A4: Ss need to have an understanding of their 1st amendment rights yet the consequences that may come with exercising it from their employer or yet to be employer. Draw the line between personal and professional. What is your digital footprint? #digcit#miched
A5: When I am at home and my kids are up I don't do anything involving work, they are my passion. I set firm "office hours" for when I will respond to emails, messages, etc. We all need boundaries, otherwise you never really leave work. #miched
A5- balance is the perfect word for it. I think it starts with being aware of our own habits and monitoring Ss. Technology cannot be an emotional pacifier; it must not be solitary and sedentary #miched
Q5. A hot topic in digital citizenship right now is balance.
How do you balance time online and off?
What does “balance” mean to you?
How might you help student reflect on their digital practices and achieve a healthy balance?
#MichEd#DigCit
A5: Balance with technology goes back to asking the question is this the right tool for reaching our objective? It is about creation, not consumtion. Providing students with choice both in digital & print so they have the ability to see both have value. #miched#digcit
Q5. A hot topic in digital citizenship right now is balance.
How do you balance time online and off?
What does “balance” mean to you?
How might you help student reflect on their digital practices and achieve a healthy balance?
#MichEd#DigCit
A5 Balance is something that I think is part of the journey in all things including #digcit I love the iphone Weekly Report to show students what it all means. We have done research about screentime including the recent brain development research. #MichEd
A5: I think the new "ScreenTime" feature on iOs can be a good reflection tool. I am also a fan of empower Ss with tools to help them manage time like the StayFocused extension or the Forest App #MichEd#DigCitKidsBook
A5: Digital balance getting harder and harder to navigate, but learning more about tools that help raise awareness of screentime and stressing continued emphasis on the importance of face-to-face collaboration #MichEd#DigCit
A5: I’m trying to find that balance myself. If I were in the classroom, I might share my “screen time diet” plan, which starts with cutting back on the number of times I check my phone. Will also be using iPhone’s screen time weekly stats. #michED#DigCit
Love the diet analogy because we can also talk about junk foods vs. healthy foods. Skyping with my mom is different than losing an hour playing Candy Crush #DigCit#miched
A5: I’m trying to find that balance myself. If I were in the classroom, I might share my “screen time diet” plan, which starts with cutting back on the number of times I check my phone. Will also be using iPhone’s screen time weekly stats. #michED#DigCit

A4: We can be role models for Ss at school. When working with Ss, I keep attention on them. On the back of my computer display is sign "Please interrupt me" This sign has lead to good discussion with Ss. #miched#digcit
This is an excellent point. Most kids go home to unfiltered web access with no adult moderating their use. School can often times create a false sense of security. #miched#DigCit
A5: Balance is so important for Ss and Ts! The usage app on my phone has helped me trim down my screen time. The librarians will be happy to know I’m reading more. #miched#digcit
A5: An awareness of the time you're spending on a screen vs. enjoying the things around you IRL. Monitoring screen time's effects on your emotions and relationships. Modeling is so important. We as adults are often not the best examples... #MichEd#DigCit
Q6. Reflect on your own knowledge and abilities as a teacher of digital citizens.
What is one way you can grow this year?
How might you go about improving your own content knowledge, skills or practice?
#MichEd#DigCit
A6: In 2018, #MediaLiteracy for students was a top priority. In 2019, #MediaLiteracy/#DigCit for adults is a priority. We could all benefit from a #MediaLit skill set. Would love to hear what others are doing on this topic. #michED#DigCit
A5: For me, I know that when my mood becomes negative from something online, it’s time to put the phone down. Balance is using digital media to ENHANCE your life, not control it. Talking about mental and physical health is a good practice. #miched
A5: Being able to balance technology and other skills is very important. I think one thing about todays society about teaching is cursive is not a thing anymore. I believe basic skills is just as important as using technology in your classroom. balance is KEY. #MichEd
A6: Continue to work with my PLN on the newest technology and new uses of the existing for my classroom. Tech changes everyday, and collaborating with peers in chats like these, in the hallway, and everywhere keeps you fresh and connected. #miched
A6: In 2018, #MediaLiteracy for students was a top priority. In 2019, #MediaLiteracy/#DigCit for adults is a priority. We could all benefit from a #MediaLit skill set. Would love to hear what others are doing on this topic. #michED#DigCit
As a teacher, I can also be a student. That means discovering new technologies and discovering what is helpful as well as what isn't. That's something I'm working on! #miched
A6 I can learn more about technology tools to incorporate into the classroom that are age appropriate for younger children. I will be doing more research on different topics and ask my professors different ways and tools that they incorporate it into their lessons. #MichEd
A5: For me, I know that when my mood becomes negative from something online, it’s time to put the phone down. Balance is using digital media to ENHANCE your life, not control it. Talking about mental and physical health is a good practice. #miched
A6: In 2018, #MediaLiteracy for students was a top priority. In 2019, #MediaLiteracy/#DigCit for adults is a priority. We could all benefit from a #MediaLit skill set. Would love to hear what others are doing on this topic. #michED#DigCit
A2: While I am not a teacher yet, I have not seen digital etiquette talked about in my placements. In my college courses, however, it is always a hot topic thanks to my instructors. #MichEd
A3: Digital citizens need to be aware of secular ideas that go outside of the environment they were raised in. As a future teacher, I plan on exposing my students to different cultures, belief systems, and societies as a whole #MichEd
A1) I want my students to be digital citizens who can/are comfortable. I want my students to feel comfortable using technology and get a positive feel from it. They are going to be using it for the rest of their lives! #MichEd
A6: Because of the proliferation on false information, I have started to always read an article before sharing. It is so easy to just read the headline and share; but this is not always good. Another way to be role model for Ss. #miched#DigCit
I like your analogy. What's your goal? What does balance look like? I wonder if there's ever a case for some students who might have a goal to increase screen time? #MichEd
Q7:
What are some of your favorite resources for teaching digital citizens?
Hit us up with links to activities, blog posts, books and more!
#MichEd#DigCit
I am really thinking hard of deleting my school email for that reason, I find myself checking it more than I should. Work can wait, my boys need their dad. #miched
A6: I am only a student at the moment, but I would love to incorporate technology in more of my reading/writing classes, Social Studies, and even some of my math classes. #MichEd
A6 I get so much encouragement from Wednesdays. I plan on increasing my #DigCit portfolio for adults and Ss including using a variety of medium #MichEd
A6: I too can grow in digital citizenship in many ways and I hope that as I grow my students will be able to grow with me. Being open minded to new ideas is something I can continue on. #miched
A5 Didn't realize how out of balance my own habits were until I was out of the country with no phone access for a week. It was liberating. We need to self-assess our own habits, realign and then model balance. #MichEd#DigCit
A6: Inspired this summer by ISTE’s challenge to commit to #DigCit this year, using resources from @CommonSense and sharing @DrKMattson book with colleagues has helped build confidence in our district.. #MichEd
A2) For my future classroom, I would feel that I would be in charge of my students digital citizenship. There are so many things out on the internet that isn't necessarily appropriate for them to see. Being able to monitor what they can and cannot view will benefit them. #MichEd
A6: I believe that I can grow as a teacher of digital citizens simply by keeping up with the times! Technology is ever-changing, and if I can understand AND utilize digital content that my students are already familiar with, that’d be amazing! #miched
A5 Didn't realize how out of balance my own habits were until I was out of the country with no phone access for a week. It was liberating. We need to self-assess our own habits, realign and then model balance. #MichEd#DigCit
A5: I’m always open to learning more, as the technology changes I have to change. I also want to work with schools in supporting parents with dig cit. Schools often blame the parents but where do they go to learn? #digcit#miched
A7: My students love this interactive activity to learn about sharing information. There is always good discussion when they have completed. https://t.co/66Hg4RZMrK#miched#DigCit
A7: Kahoot is my all time favorite because I am very competitive and it is a great review! Quizlet Live is another one of my favorites that I just learned about!! #miched
A7: Common Sense is at the top of my list. I love the range of relevant resources, for parents as well as for students and teachers, covering all areas of #DigCit. #michED
A7: For the latest research on cyberbullying, I appreciate Sameer Hinduja and Justin Patchin continually updating the Cyberbullying Research Center website. #michED#DigCit
A7: I like using @Flipgrid because not only does it increase student voice, but it is a great tool for teaching how to approperiately share and respond to each other #digcit#miched
Q7:
What are some of your favorite resources for teaching digital citizens?
Hit us up with links to activities, blog posts, books and more!
#MichEd#DigCit
A7: For tips on protecting student data privacy, I like the Connect Safely’s Parent Guide and Common Sense’s Tips for Teachers short video. #michED#DigCit
A7: If you really want to dig deep, ISTE U has a Digital Citizenship in Action Course - 15 hours and the option for graduate credit. https://t.co/j81KJ8rrI9#michEd#DigCit
A7: I've always enjoyed the Connecting Families Resources from @CommonSenseEd. They focus on facilitating open-ended conversations that parents, students and educators can have around important topics for students. #MichEd#DigCit
Q7:
What are some of your favorite resources for teaching digital citizens?
Hit us up with links to activities, blog posts, books and more!
#MichEd#DigCit
A7: I love using online quizzes such as Quizziz for pre and post tests! Simply playing music during work time for a lesson (for example, playing songs by Michigan artists when students are doing a project about Michigan economics/civics) really makes it immersive. #miched
A5) Sometimes we just get so engaged in what is going on from the screen we miss out on things. Balance: spending enough time off screen than on. Achieving that healthy balance would be to make others more aware of how much screen time they really are using. #MichEd
A6) In my future classroom, I would love to be able to make sure that my students know how much is too much screen time. I could improve my content knowledge by looking up different ways to incorporate it into my classroom. Asking other educators is another helpful tool! #MichEd
A6
I honestly feel as if I do not know enough about being a digital citizen myself to teach it. A goal of mine is to become more aware and tech savvy.
#MichEd
A5
I think it is important to balance time on screen and off. I think to encourage a balance we should do hybrid instruction. Only allow technology at times where it is beneficial to the learning.
