Shifted focus from "dance" to rhythmic activities this year...4th/5th using beat sheets and QR codes to learn different 8 count dance patterns, 3rd grade has been working on Conga/Cotton Eye Joe, K/1/2 working on counting and moving to the beat in creative ways #espechat
A1 I send home the monthly SHAPE America PA calendar on class dojo. Events that involve parents/community: field day, bring your parents week, upcoming Tiger Dash (fun run/fundraiser). Also presented to school board this year. #espechat
A1) Twitter for me has been huge and advocating for others in my school/district to join. That has helped with others seeing what we are doing in PE now...not just “rolling out the ball.” #ESPEchat
A1 Advocacy in our community consists of one big even in the spring which is the family fun run, where family members come and run/jog/walk with their ss for a period #espechat
A1 today at a PD I saw advocacy for best teaching practices with resources like Physical Best, Fitnessgram, @SHAPE_America standards, and @OPENPhysEd#ESPEchat

#espechat A1 Annual District wide Family Wellness Night, talking to board members on a regular basis, reaching out to community organizations to come to school and teach a PE class, work with Park Dist
We just promoted it during the National Bring Your Parents to PE week and sent out our class schedules to parents. Had about 150 parents show up over that week! #espechat

A1: Advocacy is helping fellow local P.E. teachers to better practices while trying to teach my Ss the importance of PA; it's also an uphill battle #ESPEchat

A1 Getting the community into our schools with family events. Some examples we do are family dance nights, fun runs, and field days. Great way to show parents and families that we have something special going on at our school. #ESPEchat
A1 remember that locally it can be as simple as bulletin boards, speaking at PTA meetings, or at staff meetings. Start small and build up as you gain confidence. #espechat
A1b At the end of last year I created a Twitter page for our department. Oftentimes, our school twitter page will retweet so that it goes on our school webpage and the community gets to see it #espechat
We had a slideshow of info about how we’re modernizing the #physed curriculum and some info on our @ActiveSchoolsUS National Award. Included an energizer activity as well #espechat
A1 cont) Lots of in-school advocacy amongst Ss. Staff still is behind in terms of being knowledgeable (i.e. call it gym, not P.E., not being role models for Ss w/ regards to PA). Parents aren't really involved - lays w/ my students #ESPEchat
A1) Advocacy looks like making the case for why PE is necessary and important to decision makers at the school, district, county, state and federal level #espechat

It is growing. This year I now have 3 community partners that will be in charge of their own obstacles as well and manning them during the event. So glad that I am getting more support for my program community wide! #espechat
Absolutely! I find it can work both ways - P.E. teacher involved in other areas and staff involved in PE & athletics - creates a great culture #espechat
A1) Cont'd: The best supporters for your PE program are your students and yourself. Students being going home, excited to tell their parents what they did in PE that day is a very powerful advocacy tool in and of itself #espechat
A2. I want to bring back a old concept from a few years ago. Bulletin Board focusing local places families can visit and have families post to school social media account #espechat
A2: I'm starting to use ClassDojo more often but there is a language barrier with some parents. It's something I'd like to work towards next school year. For staff, I'd love to teach instant activities for them to use in their classroom or if I'm away #espechat
Absolutely! I know I started w/ a PE program that was broken and I see the fruits 4 years later of continually pressing how important PA & fitness is - it's because Ss buy in #ESPEchat
#espechat@bdevore7 is right about starting small. Our most critical and crucial crowd to advocate to are our Ss. They will be the future admin, board members and politicians making decisions on our programs. We have to win them over
Ts from every school in the county give physical activity leader award to two elementary and two middle school Ss. Every HS gives a male and female PE award to every senior. We hold two ceremonies a year. #espechat
I think parents forget what we have to offer locally. That's a great idea about a bulletin board dedicated to PA you can do outside of school. #ESPEchat
A2: We have a Watchdog Dads program at our school Those men love to come in to PE and help...it is like a safe haven and fun time zone for most of them! Need to invite them in more! #espechat

@ClassDojo keeps track of your Ss successes & what they need to work on during the course of the day; parents can connect and see how their child is doing and communicate w/ teacher for questions #espechat
A3 also trying to be a leader by demonstrating how to advocate. HS has a waiver so working with those Ts to watch for school council meetings so they can attend and speak up. #espechat
A2 First thing I get to do this year in this regard is have the opportunity to bring in a #physed specific PD day next Monday with @OPENPhysEd 😬🤓! I’m excited that some ms teachers get to experience what #pepd looks like #espechat

A3 We have to differentiate though. Some Ts don't feel comfortable with advocacy so we need to provide them with "easy" wins and show their worth! #espechat
Just 2 times a year now before my big school wide events. I used to do them more often but now rely on the PE website to provide weekly information about what we are doing #espechat
Regarding advocacy w/ students: Having some alumni come to play my boys basketball team tomorrow; all of these boys played for me and now are playing high school & are willing to come back to help through PA - just awesome! #espechat

That has been a game changer in my district. It makes me sad how hard I still need to fight to make it continue. Seems like it should be common practice everywhere. #espechat
Not this year. I am in a new school and I am not sure it’s been done there before, wasn’t sure of financial situations of families. Definitely promoting healthy heart habits tho! #espechat

A4: I am on the Site Based Decision Making Team at my school. I go to school board meetings. I meet with board members. I meet regularly with admin. #espechat
Q4- Numbers dont lie, Statistics is a strong advocacy ! More specific my program I invite everyone to see what we do.. funding. I show what we have and the endless opportunities if we had more! Again.my smile everyday walking into a school that is very challenging pays #espechat

A4) Selling empanadas and doing a Ske-Ball booth at pine car derby this year. Teamed up with a restaurant to give proceeds of sales to PE budget on Thursdays in month of April. Going to do Jump Rope for Heart (First time doing it) #espechat
Completely agree, outstanding group of educators making our community that much better because of their willingness to share and help those around them grow so that our ss benefit from #qpe#espechat

Q4: Submit for district grants, AHPERD grants, and ask for money all the time for items that improve the whole school beyong the gym walls. i.e. fitness reading trail, classroom optional seating equipment, brain break equipment, indoor recess equipment, etc. #espechat
This is good. I have a budget meeting this week with principal for next year. Trying to double my budget (got only $100 This year) and increase the amount of time we have PE each week. #ESPEchat
Home school puts it on every year. This year I am going to host a booth and sell food and have a game for kids to play. I am hopping to making a few hundred dollars. #ESPEchat
A4: Our provincial body @PHE_Manitoba gives intramural grants to help P.E. programs buy equipment they may want to use in an intramural program - we bought five sets of speed stacks & it was super popular! #espechat
I have to saw grants have been a huge blessing. I have gotten the Fuel Up to play 60, Healthy Action Kids, and the PYFP Grant. When you don't really have a budget this is a huge blessing. #ESPEchat
A5: Spread the word, tell people about #espechat or how I try to teach best practices & how social media helps us to improve. Being PASSIONATE about our role day after day!
A5: I need to do a better job of letting students know how I am PA outside of school. When I offhandedly mention something, Ss are shocked, and that shouldn't be the case. I just don't take the time to tell them what I do. #espechat
A3 Being open with my admin and showing them what’s going on in my classroom has def been a big advocacy piece at school. Outside of school reaching out to my parents with praise postcards and pictures of their kids doing awesome stuff (ie high jumping) has also helped #espechat
Q5 - Make it competition with yourself. Everytime you pass up an opportunity to adovcate (no matter what it way) put miney in jar.. when you research some sort of success (praise or achievement) you get to take that money out of the jar. #espechat
A3: simply share with them what you are doing, and ask them questions not how they do things, also offer to teach them what you have done especially with tech #espechat
A4 NYC DOE Office of School Wellness programs offers grants yearly, DOE offers $250 for school supplies, @donorschoose, PTA is giving me box top money. It sure does add up #espechat

A4: Locally I take every opportunity I can I advocate for quality #physed. Presenting of BOE, saying yes to doing providing presentations when given a chance. At state level, I am lucky enough to serve at the PE Rep on our state Redesign team. #ESPEchat
A5. Stop thinking everybody else is going to fight for what you love. #ESPEchat Pick one small thing that you can do and join the cause. Many small actions lead to a momentum of change.
A3b As for fundraising we do have an annual Turkey Trot for PTSA which in turn helps pay for something that there is a need/want for. PTSA then helps us purchase it 🙏🏼 #espechat
A5 Since I work with teachers in all subjects and K-8, I try to often use PE examples when doing trainings, Institute days, etc. I think it helps to remind other Ts of the vital role PE plays. I’m also trying to become more involved w/our legislators. #espechat

A4: I am part of our districtwellness commitee, also a local joint group between our hospital and community, I hosted bring parents to PE week, a school health and fitness fair 1/2 #ESPEchat
A4 starting this month I see 4th and 5th grade 2x per week!! Didn’t advocate for it but will take note of what they achieve and use it for the future to keep seeing them more often #espechat
A4: I look for grants and write them sending them on to grant savvy parents to help polish them. Ask my PTA and share specific projects and ideas I think would help my school. #ESPEchat
Yep I’ve done this too, called it “Eagles in Action” board. Unfortunately, it ended up being a mural of myself and another teacher...I tried though! 😔 #espechat

A5 Model what I preach! I always want Ss to see a smile on my face when play games to show the excitement and fun I have with physical activity. PE is an awesome place to be! 😃 #espechat
A5: I started a new BLOG POST that has had some FANTASTIC guest bloggers who have written some AMAZING "Heart-Felt" posts related to growing as a physical educator in mid career @MrRoosPE@PerkettPE Some really cool ones coming out soon. Next week @PhysEdApps will write #espechat
A4 At my new site I would like to invite the parents to catch a glimpse of what goes on in my class, but also, this was a prior question, continue to encourage a growth mindset in others around me so that I we don’t become stagnant #espechat
