Good evening! It's my first time on #1stchat and I am happy to be here. Carol from California.
My kiddos loved the latest from Mo Willems: I Lost My Tooth
A1: So students can listen to fluent reading, be exposed to vocabulary, develop a love of stories, allows for rich conversations about books, so many reasons #1stchat
A1 We read aloud to students to demonstrate comprehension strategies in a gradual release and acceptance of responsibility model for learning. Also to promote joy of literacy and build empathy toward other's perspectives. #1stchat
A1 - Reading aloud is a great way to immerse students in reading, engaging them and fostering a love of books. Added bonus:
Quiet, focused students! :-) #1stchat
As a preservice teacher in a first-grade classroom, I see how excited the students are to share their books with their class, I want the students to love reading and sharing their opinions. #1stchat#ED463#teacherbytrine
A1: Read alouds do not only teach students reading strategies but it also gives them an opportunity to learn about life. They can learn how to handle tricky situations or how to make better choices. It's a time to discuss and enjoy a good book #1stchat#teacherbytrine#ED463
The “Matthew effect” explains that we can support positive literacy development through engagement of the learner. What engages you in order to be a lifelong learner? #theoreticalthursday#teach864#rrcna#amreading
A2: Read alouds give Ss the opportunity to have experiences that they would not have otherwise. They also give Ss an opportunity to see themselves in the story. I like using read alouds when we need to discuss different social skills. #1stchat
A2: Its important to make a intentional book choice based off what your students need. Sometimes we need our students to see themselves in a text and other times we need them to learn about others through a text #1stchat#teacherbytrine#ED463

I'll admit...I'm not always purposeful with my choices. Sometimes it's just for fun and smiles. But I read 3x/day so I'll let myself slide on this. ;-) #1stchat
When I said be intentional, I just meant know your reason. Reading should be fun, so of course I read just for fun and we talk about the reasons for reading. #1stchat
A3; Are responding to text. They give students a chance to see reading strategies and comprehension, modeled and then an opportunity to practice the skill with support. #1stchat
A3 - ...students are discussing and thinking about their reading more actively throughout the story. The read aloud is paused more often, deeper thinking, questioning, and learning is occurring #1stchat
A3 Ss are leading conversations, interacting with the text and their peers and figuring out ways to learn. Ss advocate for points of view and think strategically so that they can improve the world. #1stchat
A3 ...Ts should take on different roles other than being the T. They can be coaches, listeners, etc. The Ss should be the foucs during this time. #1stchat
A4 according to TCRWP shared reading has a single text (1copy) where all children have their eyes on enlarged print. Ss read together as they are able, a few levels up from what they can do on their own. Its about MSV orchestration, comprehension, word study & fluency #1stchat
A4 We use lots of poems and songs that we read together to warm up for our shared reading text. My first graders love, love, love to sing. They even sing our hallway song without my prompting. lol #1stchat
Shared Reading for me was a time that I used enlarged text to share reading & comprehension strategies as well as think alouds. Interactive read alouds was a time that we enjoyed literature, talked about, and I modeled think aloud strategies in a more fluid/natural way #1stchat
Pls RT! Global collaboration opportunity! We're looking for Ts and Ss of all ages to explore the topic of candy around the world between now and the end of December! Help us spread the word, particularly to schools outside the US. https://t.co/UwgVbPhj10#kinderchat#1stchat
A5 During shared reading I model taking a sneak peek at the page before reading it, I can use it to support my mini lesson, and always comprehension. #1stchat
A5 I love when they see a word in bold print and they remember to use a "strong voice". I sometimes have to remind them a strong voice does not mean we yell. #1stchat
I was just in a classroom where the teacher pointed out that the bold print looks a little bigger, so you read it like it's a big deal. I liked that connection. #1stchat
A6: I have really enjoyed the #GRA18 chapter book, A Boy Called Bat, if you didn't read it, I'd rec. also Magic Tree House, Junie B Jones, most books by Jill Eggleton #1stchat
I love reading Gooney Bird Greene and My Father's Dragon with Ss. I especially ❤️ taking part in @lekadegroot Twitter Book Club for My Father's Dragon! #1stchat
