This is our schedule for tonight. Questions will be posted at these times. Q1 at 8:10. Q2 at 8:21. Q3 at 8:30. Q4 at 8:37. Q5 at 8:45. And Q6 at 8:52. #425chat
I think running split field coverage gives the defense the advantage because you can disguise coverages more and keep high school qbs off balance. #425chat
A1: A1: Will be installing 425 for first time this upcoming season. I love the idea of SFC being able to identify needs as they occur & adjust with ease. Give kids simple rules to follow & empower them to be on-field decision makers. #425chat
Also, forgot to check in! Jerod Brown, JV HC and eventual Varsity HC at El Molino High School in Forestville, CA. Follow me, Coaches, and I’ll follow back. Always trying to grow and connect. #425chat
A1 - split field has allowed us to be dynamic by situation and also personnel - both our opponents and ours. Our kids can line up and go simply by what they see to their side. #425chat
A1: SFC gives you the ability to utilize matchups you like, or give extra help vs. matchups you might not like so much...also the ability to show different looks to each side of the field makes that 16-17 year old QB have to think an awful lot on his feet #425chat
Because I can always get the maximum number of men in the box. With SFC you don't have a guy backpedaling and just covering grass. You can get 9 guys in the box vs 21 personnel. 8 guys vs 20, etc.
A1: Split Field coverage is adaptable. It molds to the formation on your side of the field. Quarters concepts help you get an extra fitter. Tempo Offenses like to have built in answers pre snap and post snap. Split Field gives you answers for the formations you see. #425chat
A1: We really don't do much of it if any we play a very aggressive scheme overall and split field coverage kinda takes our Aggressiveness away but SFC used correctly can confuse opposing qbs #425chat
A1: SFC allowed us to feel like we always had at least a good answer to any possible alignment and also gave us the ability to get our other safety in the box a lot of the time #425chat
It’s just what we do, so any formation is the easy. We have our rules & we apply them. We teach base on that number of WRs then we adjust for the options within the number of WRs. And the kids call it, #425Chat
A1: It puts our kids in the best position to cover an opponent’s trending combos on both the field and boundary side with one call, and allows our Will to focusing on the run #425chat
A1: split field coverage gives you flexibility to match up passing strength and boundary independently based on match up and formation. Also most sound vs motion/trade. #425chat
A2) We have calls for 1, 2, 3 receivers, then we teach the strengths& weaknesses of each call. Empower the kids to make calls and checks, they are ultimately the ones who have to play it, so I give them plenty of slack to do it. #425chat
A2) Always have started 2x2 as it is balanced. Palms is taught first from this set. I don't teach coverage I teach rules. They don't know what coverage they are in they just know the checks they are supposed to makes based on threats to their side #425chat
I used to start with pro I, now I start with defending the spread. All depends on what you see. The most important thing is to give your kids concrete rules/checks vs formations/situations. That way you are holding the pencil last. Teach your kids the game. #425chat
A2: we did a lot of half line focused on the strong side first make all adjustments out of that. Than show them the back side. Do it in a crawl, walk. And run phase #425chat
A2: Start by defining each “picture”. 2 removed, pro, trips, single. Then teach what coverages fit what picture. Usually start with 2 removed which is Palms/2 read for us. 3x1 is mini or special (TCU lingo) #425chat
A2: statistically speaking 2 by is the most common width. Our calls are based on that and checked to 3 by, 20p, etc. robber concept to the field is our base coverage, which holds rules true to 3by and empty. Also allowing creativity into the boundary. #425chat
A2: We teach what coverage looks we like vs what surfaces...2WRs, TE/WR, 3WRs, 1WR, etc...once we have a good understanding of that we can start to mix and match to create advantages #425chat
A2: We start with the calls we make to each alignment and why. We put responsibility on our safeties to make correct calls and echoed by our corners. Try to make it as simple as we can, 5 main calls; 6 if we ever see Quads #425chat
Install over summer. Start with 2x2 rules. We also call sit✓ which gives the FS the call. Ours can change weekly. We will play 1/4's to strength and man or zone backside.#425chat
Q3: Saw some of y’all allow kids to call the coverage. Why do you feel this allows them to play fast? How many coaches DON’T allow the kids to call SFC? #425chat
FirstInstall -2x2 FS Sets strength. Calls coverage (read) 2nd-Solo to 3x1. Easiest 3rd -11 pers spread. Not played same as 2x2 detached most time. 4. Pro 21 pers. base check really becomes robber to the call away is basically c3 match. 5th-12 pers ace #425chat
A3: Why not let the kids call it? I feel like they can play faster. They are not always looking to the sideline. It lets them take ownership of the coverage and the scheme. Most of all, it doesn't matter what we are playing as long as we are on the same page. #425chat
A3: the players have to play, not us. Teach them the “whys” and the tendencies and let them own it. There are good side line conversations that can be have when you let them adjust. #425chat
A3: I feel like if they can than allow it. Especially if you have a High IQ guy on the field. Plus I’ll help out if it not the right call 😂 but it depends on your joes! #425Chat
Q3: Saw some of y’all allow kids to call the coverage. Why do you feel this allows them to play fast? How many coaches DON’T allow the kids to call SFC? #425chat
A2) teach 2 read/palms to all 5 DB’s, teach man to CB’s, teach robber technique to the deep safeties. That allows to install different combos faster #425chat
Cont. then 6th install is heavy O 22 pers And 31/32 install. Any of those packages usually require one of the back 5 to be replaced with more of LB Type. It’s really not split field at that point but position names and coverage calls stay same #425chat
So I do both. In palms they make the check because it's based on alignment of bogeys, but I have called the coverage for them as palms will not be the only coverage of the night obviously. #425chat
A3: I just learned it that way. I give one signal. They make a call based on what they see to their side. How can you run split field coverage without the players making their own call to their side? #425Chat
Q3: Saw some of y’all allow kids to call the coverage. Why do you feel this allows them to play fast? How many coaches DON’T allow the kids to call SFC? #425chat
I think it gives us the ability to adjust our coverages from man to cover 5 to stress and focus on the athletes strengths while keeping 6 in the box #425chat
A3: Everything is a one word pre-snap call & we only use 5 calls. We’ve repped it enough starting in the summer, that it’s 2nd nature for them to check the alignment to their side. As long as they don’t call it Nub (single TE) when it is Trio (3 receivers)then we’re good #425chat
A3)my job is to get them ready during the week, on Friday night they have to make plays they need ownership in the call. It’s a trust thing & I never want to make a call they don’t trust or believe in. They bust a call, it’s my fault for letting them. Takes away the fear #425chat
So I do both. In palms they make the check because it's based on alignment of bogeys, but I have called the coverage for them as palms will not be the only coverage of the night obviously. #425chat
#425Chat A) For me it depends on the team we are facing. Since most times we are split field my Safty is my Q of the back end and gets them lined up. Per our game plan we have coverage tags! Enhances IQ when coming to the sideline as well.. in game eyes help with adjustments
Even this - I have a saying on defense that I stole from @CoachNBurton at a clinic a long time ago “if we are all wrong we are all right”. So if everyone is playing it the same way you will be ok. #425chat

A3 we live in the same SFC 95% of the night so we rarely need to call anything 😂 with that said, if developed trust, more on safety, until then it's on me
#425chat
Q3: Saw some of y’all allow kids to call the coverage. Why do you feel this allows them to play fast? How many coaches DON’T allow the kids to call SFC? #425chat
The R4 system QB we face in NORCAL can't get their pre snap reads when we show one coverage and give another look post snap, can really help you defend based off your scout report #425chat
A4: Depending on the splits, we will be in blue all the way across, which is read quarters. If the splits or hash change it can become robber/ quarters or quarters/ hard 2, etc. Mostly depends on game plan. #425chat
If they’re communicating on the backend like they’re supposed to, even if they’re wrong then they’re all wrong and we’ll be fine just like you said. Teach them right first and let them take some ownership of it #425Chat
A4: vs 10p 2x2 we like palms by default. A tweak is play quarters concept with CB man 1 and safety takes up and out of 2. Another tweak to strong side is put the overhang outside of 2 and play quarters. #425chat
A2: Usually teach base coverages first, then relate those concepts to our SFCs. I found it helps the kids understand the “why” behind it, and allows us to adjust our calls based on our opponent. The kids also started to apply it to their film work and were able to provide input
A4) Palms has several checks that creates SFC. If Safety feels as if he can get on top of number 1 vertical he have 2 read called to his say,but let's say safety on other side feels he can't get on top because#1 is too far away we will "lock" man that side #425chat
A3) the smarter/more experienced FS gets less tags from me. I let him make calls based off tendencies. I tag everything for the inexperienced guys #425chat
By calling the coverage I hope we mean one of two coverages. Anymore than that requires some critical thinking in a few seconds. If we give them the ...its this coverage UNLESS this happens THEN it’s this... rule. That’s all I would allow one check. #425chat
A4 part 2: pro picture (wr&te) to strong side would be quarters with corner man 1 and deep safety takes vert of 2 or robs 1. SS/San/nickel is outside of TE plays force flat. Pro to weak side is qtrs concept. CB man 1. Safety up and out of 2 or rob 1 #425chat
A4.) pending game plan splits etc , but press quarters front set to field, ILB set to the back, can also do a man concept with high safety to strength and backside run read. #425Chat
For ex. ... we are setting passing strength to the field in palms this week , unless Julio Jones is in the slot to the boundary then it’s man free bracket to the Y. FS ur checking it. #425chat
With you on that one coach. Most calls/checks were run through the safety, but only when he showed ability to recognize what we’re looking for in offensive formation & their tendency. #425Chat
Agreed. When guys understand why we want to check coverage, they are empowered and the defense is able to be really good. 2 of the 3 safeties need to be really smart, one on each side. #425chat
A3: the players have to play, not us. Teach them the “whys” and the tendencies and let them own it. There are good side line conversations that can be have when you let them adjust. #425chat
A3) I heard Coach @TCUCoachP speak on SFC, &went through pros/cons myself. Pros: gives player(s) more ownership of our defense. They wouldn't have to wait for me to see the offense.
Cons: 1. Player id error. 2. Down/distance and RZ situation. 3. More for kids to remember
#425chat
A5) Like anything else; flipped coaching. Give it to them on their devices, break it down as a group in the meeting room, apply it on the practice field. #425Chat
A5 - teach them the rules and then get them in the field and show them that when you trust the rules you have answers to whatever concept the O throws at you. Then when in game night you see something they haven’t shown in film they have a rule based foundation. #425chat
A5: Have always started teaching on board or on hudl. Let them see what formations look like for real. After they get the basics go outside and walkthru. #425chat
A5: we try to do all installs both offensively & defensively starting in the meeting room on the board having them draw it all up in their own notebook. Then we go to walkthru & then put it into motion. Every kid learns differently, it’s our job to figure out how that is #425chat
A5: this year I used a combo of things. Started with meetings with PowerPoint with drawings and whiteboard. Then film clips. Then on field we did alignment. Then we did half line drill. Walked it then ran routes. Our HC has good approach. Teach to diff learning styles. #425chat
Front depends on a lot of factors, but with a hard corner into the boundary the overhand doesn’t need to plus out very far and can fit in b. Stress to carry 1 vertical if 2 goes vert is on the cb. #425chat
A3: We let our BC change the backside coverage in some instances. Since we don’t see any pass dominant teams, we usually teach a few “coverage rules” for the week and the kids call it on the field. Makes them a part of the game plan process and better understand the Off. #425chat
A5) Summer. Practice & 7on7. Try and cover all situations. 7on7 in summer is great to work it. Don't give a crap about winning 7on7's. Want to learn from it and teach/work our concepts. #425chat
A5 a little of everything but love walk through. Start with 1 wr vs strong/weak side and go through releases, then another, finally combos and reaction
A5) You have to take them from the class to the grass. Walk-throughs are important as well as 1/2 field 7 on 7 and making them adjust coverages depending on look to their side and splits. Once they get that down, start doing lot of motion. #425chat
