Welcome to #TeachWriting! We're joining a combined chat with #6thChat tonight about struggling writers - please join us on the #6thWrite hashtag for a special combined chat tonight!
Hi! Welcome everyone! I'm thrilled to be hanging out with #teachwriting and #6thchat friends tonight, where the topic is resistant writers. We'll be using the hashtag #6thwrite! Say hi and let us know if it was sunny in your corner of the world today.
A1: I experience writing resistance when I haven't taken enough time to "fill my cup." Reading, walking, gardening, visiting museums, laughing and playing....all of these things keep resistance at bay for me. #6thchat#teachwriting#6thwrite
A2: I'm not sure I have "the" answer to this question, but I have one answer that I'm certain about: When we rigidly impose our own ideas about what writing is or how it is done. #6thchat#teachwriting#6thwrite
A3: No answers, but a question: How might we help all writers use what they love to make and do and learn outside of the classroom as a gateway to writing inside of it? #6thchat#teachwriting#6thwrite
A4: Learning more about my own biases has helped me listen and learn more from resistant writers. It's helped me understand that how I'm interpreting resistance might be all wrong, too. #6thchat#teachwriting#6thwrite
A5: Visual motor integration. Executive functioning challenges. Weak core muscles believe it or not. Fine motor challenge (look at the pencil grip). Do they write with the side of their face on the desk? Background knowledge. #6thchat
Sometimes, I'm asked: But what about conventionality? What about the skills learned by perfecting the five paragraph essay? Can't help but wonder: Yes, what about conventionality, and our need to pursue it with new forms that are actually valued right now? #6thwrite
Question 7: Whose expertise informs your own as you strive to engage resistant writers? Help us find smart people to follow and learn from. #6thchat#teachwriting#6thwrite
.@AngelaStockman Thank you for including me within this list, friend. The month of May sees us celebrating a year-long multigenre project. Our #Room407 students have been clamoring to see one another's projects. It's a joy to see them excited. #TeachWriting#6thChat#6thWrite
