#Kinderchat, glue, glitter, gogurt, bringing daily joy to twitter. Find us Mondays, 9 pm EST and 8:30PM London time when we talk all things Early Years!
Hi and welcome all to tonight's #kinderchat on social-emotional learning! I'm Joel from Toronto, and I'm your moderator tonight. Introduce yourself, where you're from, and tell us how your 2018 is so far! Don't forget the hashtag #kinderchat
Jenny, also from Toronto. The new year has presented a few challenges. Looking forward to connecting with other educators and getting inspired in new ways. #Kinderchat
Good. So many sick at the school I worked at student’s and teachers. Been hit hard by the flu. I spent the weekend resting so I’m set for the next sub days #kinderchat
Tonight we talk social-emotional development in Kindergarten. As a "minds on", have a look at this quote (from Ontario Kindergarten Program) and let us know what you think about it! #kinderchat
I am sure you know how valuable a reliable substitute is to a teacher! You are doing good work there! I love when I can get a sub that understands kindergarten. I have one that I don’t even plan for, she has everything all done up ahead of time. I let her go to it! #kinderchat
This document is big and powerful! Lots and lots of great, well-researched support for parents and teachers alike. Hope @AlbertaEd has a look too! #kinderchat
They have as I have to sub. Read A Snowy Day to 2nd graders and they applauses after. Great discussion during and after the read aloud. Kids asked if I would be coming back. I am, tomorrow #kinderchat
Q2: Traditionally, schools were focused only on teaching 3 R's. Now, we know of the immense value of social and emotional learning in schools. To you, what is social-emotional learning in Kindergarten? What are the key components? #kinderchat
As a kindergarten teacher social/emotional learning is my number 1. Most of our first term is focused on building community, becoming more responsible, learning how to work together, etc. #kinderchat the rest of the year too, btw ;)
YES! I agree that the social/emotional development is a foundation of classroom community - and positively impacts everything else that follows! #kinderchat

Taking the time to stop a challenging moment to say, "Look at your friend. How is s/he feeling?" Naming and identifying feelings, building empathy, co-constructing solutions. Wish there was time to do this with every encounter (32 students). #Kinderchat
Yes!! Relationships and community are priority #1 in September! And if the wheels are falling off, stop, and examine the sense of community! #kinderchat
We found a need to re-emphasize community after coming back from 2 weeks of holidays. Important in September, but also revisited year round! #kinderchat
We’ve spoken at length this year about the Zones of Regulation- giving us words to understand how we feel and how that affects not only our learning, but our classmates learning too #Kinderchat
Academics, especially in September, take a back seat to social/emotional learning. We’re all going to get where we need to be by June. As educators we need to trust in that! #Kinderchat
Yes! For sure!! January is the new September, right? It’s one reason I was glad we went back on a Wed. We need to ease back into this thing called school. #kinderchat
For sure. I think modelling not taking things so seriously is of great importance in creating a classroom culture that is forgiving of mistakes in the learning process #kinderchat
A3: S/E learning is interwoven throughout our day. One thing I strive, although it’s difficult… is to take our learning out of “silos”- the math silo, the LA silo, etc. Integrating all of our subjects, including S/E learning. Because life is like that #kinderchat
So many great programs out there. I like to read as many as possible and ask myself what's common in all - and why? What bits and pieces will be effective with the unique students in our learning community? #kinderchat

Ontario Kindergarten shifting away from art/science/math/language curriculum areas and towards 4 Frames (belonging/contributing, self-reg/well-being, language/math behaviours, & problem solving/innovation) has been SO meaningful #kinderchat

Mic 🎤 drop Carrie Those silos that fragment our learning into cubicles that isolate our thinking, empathy, awareness of who we are in our society #kinderchat looking at our messy world

This allows children/teachers/parents to make connections across ALL learning engagements and build MEANING, which is really what learning is all about! #yelling#excited#kinderchat
A3: To me, all areas of learning go hand-in-hand. Learning resiliency helps us learning to read. Learning about growth mindset helps us with exploring our math thinking. Learning about and celebrating our identities help us be better communicators. #kinderchat
I truly believe in that old saying, “People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.” Same goes for ed. If our students don’t know we care, if they don’t know they are supported, how can they feel the confidence to know we’ve got their backs? #kinderchat
Q4: Glad we are all in agreement about the importance of social-emotional development. With that in mind, let's share! What are some practical ways you encourage social emotional development in your classroom? #kinderchat
A4: We create together essential agreements in September about how we will "be" with each other - these form the basis of our interactions, friendships, actions, etc. and we refer back to these agreements through out the year #kinderchat
Truth! my #oneword2018 is Being Present (I blogged about it) #kinderchat Sitting with your Sts, listening to them, knowing them supports their learning to take risks/chances in a safe environment
A4: One way is giving permission to have a bad day. No one is always “ready to learn” all day every day. Things happen, people frustrate us, and all of that is OK. What isn’t OK is how we sometimes deal with that. We talk a lot about dealing with unfortunate events #Kinderchat
One of my best moments of last week was sitting beside one of my girls as she was writing a story about her and her friend going for a walk. I was working on something else, but the gentle ease we had just working side by side was exactly what I hope for each year #kinderchat
A4: Slowing down!! Getting to know students as individuals. When they feel understood & values, there more likely to open up & take risks in their learning. #kinderchat
Funny story: I had a substitute EA in one day. 3 of my boys were discussing a problem they were having. The EA came by and said, “Can you work this out?” And they all replied, “We are…” I was pretty proud of their maturity, though I did feel a bit bad for the EA #kinderchat
A4: Also, making time for students to become social problem solvers without us always swooping in. Here's an old blog post I did about our Talk It Out Table #kinderchathttps://t.co/kknbmRimWF
It depends on the group. My last years group never got to the the problem solving level. This year is a whole new ballgame. It’s like a vacation, really #kinderchat
When I taught gym I used to have a spot for kids to solve arguments. They were sent out of the game to talk it out and weren't allowed back until everyone was satisfied. I have never seen problems solved so quickly! #Kinderchat
A4: recognizing those moments where children are capable of solving their own problems, of working together to come up with solutions, & not stepping in & squashing those learning moments #kinderchat
Q5: How do you encourage others (staff, families, students) to see the value in honouring social emotional learning as a vital part of the program? #kinderchat
A5: I think for me, it’s just being an example, and being transparent about my own failings. I’m lucky to work in a primary school, where we all understand the needs of the youngest learners, so it’s not so much convincing but sharing our knowledge #kinderchat
Spent years helping kinders look at the “dos” not the “don’ts” Sometimes they were harder on themselves then we could ever be LOL #Kinderchat but we stopped calling it rules and it lead to the positive

A5: I think about the role of documentation here. Capturing powerful moments of social/emotional learning in action and sharing it with community. Linking to curriculum is also helpful to show that this is very REAL learning #kinderchat
A5: placing emphasis on academics only at this early stage of development will not help children in the long run. Explaining this to colleagues/families isn’t always an easy sell...but so worth the conversation #kinderchat

@JoelSeaman Thanks for a great chat tonight! It’s always so important to think about the social/emotional health of our students, now more than ever! Have a great week #kinderchat 4 more wake ups until Friday!

#kinderchat another fantastic discussion. Together we support what we feel is best for our kids. DAP haven’t changed, tweaked a little but still we carry on to do the right thing. Have a great week.
