"Principals Unleashed: Our Life & Impact Beyond the School Walls"
Hey all! Chris from Columbus, OH.
My favorite book is Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson. If you haven’t read it yet, I couldn’t recommend it enough! #ohedchat
A1 The literacy task wouldn't rest on soley the ELA T. Everyone would dig into close reading, explaining why they think something is true with text evidence. Silent reading in all classes (a dream) #ohedchat
A1: Reading & Writing should go together - it is the building of knowledge & vocab partnered with synthesizing, analyzing and communicating info and ideas #Ohedchat
A1) I like Disciplinary Literacy... Reading and writing looks different in each content. Science might be a lab report. Band could be sheet music. PE might be a list of rules to a game. Form depends on function.
#ohedchat
#OHedchat it is an older book and many of the ideas were not supported with research after publishing, but it is a great way to show thinking contrary to the popular "camp" of a discipline. It is fun read through
It's not in the Wrinkle trilogy, but all her books are connected in one way or another. It's an adult fiction. I've loaned out so many copies and bought myself replacements more times than I can count--love it! #ohedchat
A1: Lots of rich discussion as kids get their heads around the topic they're reading about so they can articulate their written response (while engaging in lots of good discourse). #ohedchat
A1. In all content areas, we have Ts using a variety of writing strategies as well as different texts and books. Students are writing multi-paragraph essays to showcase learning and understanding. #ohedchat
I had a lit circle group read it. They kept asking "when is the tiger showing up?" I thought the fact it was exactly 100 chapters was too funny (they had to split up the book themselves and were horrified. LOL--it's not any longer than any other book! #ohedchat
A1: connecting content to related stories...having Ss reflect on how topics are intermingled yet sometimes it’s so subtle that they don’t even realize it’s happening! #ohedchat
A1: It means differentiation and making real-world connections to everything they’re lesrnjng. And asking... Where is each student currently? Where CAN they be? And how can we help them get there? #ohedchat
1.1 Essential to classes (in any discipline): lesson itself supports comprehension of text and assignment. Text should be read closely together so ALL students know what it says, how it says it, and can learn from the text. #ohedchat
A1. This book by Holbrook, Salinger and Harvey is coming out very soon! Won't it be wonderful to have the strategies that are so needed to guide students to be thriving in writing during any class? #OhEdChat
We read it out loud to our younger kiddo the yr before the movie came it. It was great, but I haven't re-read any of the rest of the series, yet. #ohedchat
A1: Lots of rich discussion as kids get their heads around the topic they're reading about so they can articulate their written response (while engaging in lots of good discourse). #ohedchat
I've always gotten something new out of her books, every time I've read them. ALL of them. Love the Young Unicorns, too. Has a scene where I audibly catch my breath, every time. #ohedchat
A1: Reading & writing across curriculum looks like students doing the reading & writing of that content--reading like a historian, writing like a scientist, etc. #ohedchat
2 How to succeed on wr assign should be modeled (with neutral text). Students see how to work on all elements of assignment (intro, focus, evidence, transitions, conclusion restating focus and final reflection). #ohedchat
A1: Every class & every student writing *something*. It doesn't have to be essays. Even short pieces are better than nothing at all. For example, my biomedical science students have to read case studies and write presentations, learning & using new vocab along the way #ohedchat
3 Texts studied for writing should also be closely read. Both texts of course should be in the grade band. Assignments should of course reflect desired standards. #ohedchat
A1: It looks look Ss having the opportunity to apply their reading skills in authentic settings and processing what they're learning through text-based writing. #Ohedchat
#ohedchat that literacy is a specific goal for all disciplines. I stress science literacy in my classes and through the dept. Everyone reads and writes....in every class (HS)
Some of my Ss think annotating is just an ELA task, but they get to history or psychology or some other class and they don't know how to take notes.... #ohedchat
Authenticity is so powerful in literacy--takes the reading and writing beyond the classroom to those practical applications that help kids make sense of it all. #ohedchat
#ohedchat A1: Ss are justifying what they know & how they know it in all subjects. In math, it's using words and numbers to explain. In reading, it's using evidence from the text. In science, it may be a diagram. Ss write to communicate what Ss think and know about a topic
#ohedchat A1: I also try to have students use their creativity for 1 project per unit. whether that be an animated video or a song, or a rap, or a sit com sketch...
Annotating is so much more than taking notes--my learning in HS and college would've been so much more efficient AND deeper with annotation vs. the note-taking I did. #ohedchat
It gave me a chuckle because the structure was so perfect, along with all the writing about the variety of religions that he tries and then dismisses. The Ss who chose the book ended up loving it, but they were so fixated on that tiger... LOL #ohedchat
A1: Weaving even small writing and reading pieces throughout the day makes a difference. Having students create their own word problems, read literacy that includes science topics, or have students integrate their science understanding into a story #ohedchat
2.1 Just as students need to read a lot, they need to write a lot. Standards aligned writing in the form of culminating assignments takes time and working across the disciplines/content areas provides those opportunities & time. #ohedchat
The Screwtape letters is one of those that you feel the need to leave the lights on afterwards. It seemed like he was listening in on another dimension for that one... #ohedchat
2 As someone now doing lots of writing I can attest that NOTHING solidifies understanding as well as writing! So it needs to be part of all content areas. #ohedchat
I think that "highlight the whole page" thing is a stage--sort of like when toddler learn a new word and everything is that word for a day or two. The novelty of highlighting takes over, until they realize highlighting everything doesn't help. #ohedchat
#ohedchat A2: we all communicate through media, all peer-review journal articles are written and read....thus creating an imperative for future global citizens to be competent with literacy across all subjects
A2: Ss need to take their understanding to new depths through writing and expressing their thoughts. Reading allows them to see that things are interwoven in our world #ohedchat
A2 It's crucial because writing and reading happen in every single content area. These skills should not be isolated to ELA as they are global skills that open doors to Ss in the world for their future. #ohedchat
A2: Ss need to see how learning is interconnected...we need to show how content does not stand alone. It’s our responsibility as Ts to provide the Ss ways to see how they’re connected. #ohedchat
A1: it means that writing is not just 4 essays a year, that writing is crucial to everything we do because it’s a common ground for us to all build ideas on #ohedchat
3 This does not get the attention it deserves but work in the ‘90’s showed that high schools that did cross disciplinary writing systematically got improved outcomes on test scores. #ohedchat
A2: It's important for the application of the content. When students ask, "Why do we have to read/write this?" I say its because the best science experiments in the world are useless if you can't communicate your results #ohedchat
A2: Jarrod from Marysville jumping in late. Because reading is the foundation of all learning. Without literacy a student can not understand everything else. #ohedchat
A2: Because writing becomes an extension of Ss thinking, it can help them understand the structure of texts from various disciplines by having opportunities to write/respond in that style. #ohedchat
A2 In the real world, learning is not isolated into subjects and periods. Concepts overlap, and fostering cross curricular skill acquisition demos the real world. #ohedchat
1.1 Essential to classes (in any discipline): lesson itself supports comprehension of text and assignment. Text should be read closely together so ALL students know what it says, how it says it, and can learn from the text. #ohedchat
A2: Because writing becomes an extension of Ss thinking, it can help them understand the structure of texts from various disciplines by having opportunities to write/respond in that style. #ohedchat
When we all do this, we reinforce the basic skills and also teach the nuances of our disciplines. A student who doesn't "get it" in ELA may "get it" in science, or social studies, etc. #ohedchat
Kids need modeling in notetaking and annotation, regardless the grade. I used to walk among my students to show them my annotations, close enough for them to see how it should look but not exactly! #OhEdChat
A2) 2 of the 7 survival skills are oral/written communication and accessing/analyzing information. No matter what career you pursue, being great at these matters.
#ohedchat
A2: we're in a digital world where we need to write to communicate. Ss learn to write by writing, so they must be immersed in it to master it. #ohedchat
A2. Students gain a better understanding as well as showcase deeper understanding through writing. Understanding strategies, techniques, and vocabulary can make all the difference in a students success #ohedchat
A2: reading & writing are catalysts to learning in all other content areas. Writing has always helped me most effectively learn & recall information later, especially in a more challenging subject, which for me was science! #ohedchat
Teaching notetaking is a skill teachers need to learn. If kids come to you not possessing the skill, they haven’t learned it. If they haven’t learned it, someone before you didn’t know how to teach it. #ohedchat
A2: reading and writing is fundamental to success not just now but in anyone's future. Giving students multiple opportunities to develop their skills is crucial. Being able to create common norms and expectations increase ones chance to find a passion & success.
#ohedchat
And there are a variety of ways to successfully take notes. Just because you have one way that works for you doesn't mean it will work for your Ss. Provide a variety of options. I hate those who insist on rigid, my way or the high way, note taking strats. #ohedchat
#ohedchat In as study of which professions did the most reading , first was lawyers but second was scientists. Most find this very surprising but there are literally hundreds of thousands of journ
als and they get read
A2: formal language is and always has been a common ground for us to build abstract ideas on. Without writing/reading, there is nothing substantial to learn from/develop #ohedchat
Some Ss may or may not be ready to dissect a text at its roots for analysis due to the reading level & comp. Should all Ss be required to read all texts together? What exactly does this accomplish? Ss should be self selecting many texts & discussing by need/want/growth. #ohedchat
In math I have my students create riddles, word problems or explore real world math mistakes and write about them. They don’t even realize they are writing! #ohedchat
I really appreciated and enjoyed how much of my instruction as an ELA teacher included work within history and science. Such great ways to bring relevance to literature and make connections across disciplines! #ohedchat
A2 I continue to hold to the tenant that you don’t really know what you know or believe until you can express that understanding cogently through writing. Spoken words are fleeting. The written word is documentation. #ohedchat
A3: Incorporate both I to daily instruction. Constantly reading & writing — different formats, different methods. And read & write with the students. 5 minutes read, 4 minutes write. Practice becomes habit. #ohedchat
A3: ERT in reading. Everybody Read To. Pose a question. Ss need to read to find the answer. Once Ss find the answer, they READ IT from text as proof. This ensures kids are referring to text instead of guessing, AND teaches them how to quote the text. #ohedchat
#ohedchat It is definitely a "both and" all students should have the opportunity to work with rich complex text --- but with LOTS of support. They also need to read as much as possible that they can read independently in order to grow knowledge, vocabulary and love of reading
A3: Work on those cross-curricular relationships. Collaborate with other teachers. For example, @MrHartzlerMath, @LHSMrsDamanti, and I all have access to our students' digital journals & Ss will be working on them in science, math, and ELA #ohedchat
A3: Incorporate both into daily instruction. Constantly reading & writing — different formats, different methods. And read & write with the students. 5 minutes read, 5 minutes write. Practice becomes habit. #ohedchat
I was conferring with a student today and reminded him, that text is really just a written conversation. Our intent to make meaning must be strong, direct, & impactful, or our message is lost. #ohedchat
A3: Surround Ss with resources and teach them how to curate their own text sets. Start with @infohio free resources - math, science, social studies searchable journals, periodicals, primary sources K12 #Ohedchat
A3: My favorite strategy was changing up the type of writing...scripts, brochures, debates, raps...get them reading and then give them writing that they can't wait to do! #ohedchat
A3: Journal entries are fun and creative. For science last year we did a quick-write with the title, “I am a scientist” or something along those lines, recording fossil discoveries. Students take ownership of their ideas when writing them in unique ways! #ohedchat
3.1 I also believe in quick writes as in the Collins writing program. Every day teachers ask a quick question/not graded/not great writing, just thoughts on paper, +/- 5m in response to that question. #ohedchat@JohnCollinsPUSD
I agree, and sometimes I've discovered that my Ss know more about history or science than I do. I love when they can correct me with stuff like The Boston Massacre (pre-reading discussion for "Give Me Liberty" speech) #ohedchat
2 This helps develop writing fluency ESPECIALLY if done across the content areas. ReadWorks (grew out of curriculum from school ML & I started in Harlem) has article a day sets (five connected articles are read, one a day). #ohedchat@ReadWorks
A3: Tap into the interests of Ss...let Ss express themselves in ways that make them feel comfortable, but at the same time challenge them to see different ways of writing as possibilities. #ohedchat
A3: in math, justify with words and numbers. Ss hate it. I ask who thinks they have a Brownie Point worthy answer. Strong Ss share; Ss without enough proof/full sentences will be scribbling down ideas gotten from peers, then will share after. Great peer training. #ohedchat
One of my faves was having students summary the key idea or message of a text in a Tweet--140 characters. They really had to think hard to get meaning intp that limited space. #ohedchat
Responsibility 2connect disciplines is incumbent on teachers. Unlike students we have a view of the larger picture. Not the complete or perfect or right picture but bigger. We must encourage & engage Ss in reading & writing about broader swathes. Disciplinary synergy! #Ohedchat
Gotta jump out early tonight, definitely going to check back later on this chat for awesome responses! Looking forward to next week already. ✌🏼 #ohedchat
A3 My strategy....in writing as reading, Ss are more motivated to pull themselves through difficult, ie, complex texts if they are INTERESTED. Same for writing. The strategy...design writing tasks that motivate! Not hard but takes thoughtful approaches. #ohedchat
4.1 Weekly cross subject grade level meetings devoted to teachers sharing assignments, reasons for it and student work samples from it. The Instructional Practice Guide or IPG on https://t.co/AMoDIzykQC is helpful. #ohedchat@achievethecore
2 Another absolutely fabulous resource by the Vermont Writing Collaborative. Annotates actual student writing samples to explain how they meet or don’t meet the standard being addressed. Found here #ohedchat
A4: Collaboration is key. Working together, learning best practices from each other in literacy and writing. Creating a culture of literacy in the building. #ohedchat
One of my fave 8th grade ELA lessons--analyzing the structures in the Declaration. It was fun to team that up with their history class. Deeper thinking and analyzing in both classes. #ohedchat
Anything that adds choice or encourages imagination/creativity amps up the activity... And if the product is entertaining, well it's that much easier to read #ohedchat
#ohedchat To make meaningful quoting @theipodteacher they need to have a global audience. Important to not only be writing to you but using tools so they feel they are writing to the world!
A3 Individual conferring is a nonnegotiable. To know your readers & writers, you must listen, talk, & meet w/them. Mini lessons for all is also a must do; Ts deliver content holistically. Conferring eliminates barriers, support Ss, & supports differentiation for all Ss #ohedchat
Nice! It's great when you can pair up with multi disciplines. Our history and ELA are all out of sync. They do early Am. Hist in 8th and continue in 10th. So Am Lit in 11th is like: do you remember the Puritans? No? Well...#ohedchat
A4: Co-plan...regularly share what works...Google Drive is a great way to create team folders for drives and stockpile the ideas for all to incorporate in their instruction #ohedchat
Thanks for the shoutout. #ohedchat Putting our student work in the fridge is okay. Putting our student work on everyone’s fridge is better. #theglobalrefrigerator
#ohedchat We attempt to use Pineapple PD to encourage teachers to share the great happenings in their rooms and also foster the desire for teachers to visit each other to see great practices in action
A4) non ELA teachers need to develop strong rubrics to focus on content of writing, content vocabulary...avoid or reduce emphasis on mechanics, length requirement, etc.
#ohedchat
A4: coordinate lessons to best connect content between subject areas...turn to colleagues to proofread writing...listen to the ideas they share. #ohedchat
Thanks for the shoutout. #ohedchat Putting our student work in the fridge is okay. Putting our student work on everyone’s fridge is better. #theglobalrefrigerator
In my experience route to larger contextual views directly tied 2the students smaller world vision and then drawing them out. Example: inviting doodlers 2 Bcome illustrational thinkers; hunters into scientific conservationist. Working from intimate to the universal. #Ohedchat
A4: By supporting the robust development of content/background knowledge. Literacy is as much social capital as it is fluency, comprehension, and analysis. #ohedchat
It takes a different mindset--what do I need to say? What format, approach, etc. is required for the purpose and audience? Then go from there. Length should not be the first consideration. #ohedchat
#ohedchat I don't know if we can convince content teachers, concerned with transmitting their domain knowledge to students in tight time frames that conferencing and mini lessons are non negotiables...
A4: Collaborate. Share ideas. Take risks (no one ever died from reading/writing). Find ways together to help Ss see connections between content areas. Don't be afraid to let go of the ole' tried and true. #ohedchat
A4: work together. Track data. Dont recreate the wheel. Lots of tried and tested avenues that can support students at their level. One that comes to mind newsELA.
#ohedchat
I can write 5 amazing sentences or 3 pages of garbage. If the content is well developed, the length shouldn't be specified. The key is defining well developed/sufficient evidence #ohedchat
A4: Dont be afraid to ask fellow Ts how they address a new skill or where there Ss are at with it. Was just chatting with a friend today on where our Ss are with providing evidence. #ohedchat
First step is to move away from textbooks as the only text - hard to right like a scientist if all you read and have as mentor text is textbooks- #ohedchat
One example, though I have others, rather than provide a plethora of prompts, provide a variety of response modes. Writing is so diverse...we all know that. The essay is rare in real life. Allow Ss to choose modes of response. #ohedchat
A5: Some great resources for current articles across content areas on NewsELA. Love collaboration across content areas through tools like Google docs. #ohedchat
A4 Be vulnerable! Offer support to Ts around you, & be the one who constantly seeks a new way to meet Ss needs. Half full is better than half empty. @NCTE & other professional sites for collaboration is helpful for Ts to connect. #ohedchat
A5: With Technology, Kids who can’t read now can (text to speech). Kids wo can’t write now can (speech to text). #writingwithyourface We have to decide...are we here to see what kids know or are we here to punish them because they didn’t do things the way we did them! #ohedchat
A5: Technology allows Ss to access more info & research to write about. For example, tomorrow my BioMed 11 class will be creating informational brochures for patients with diabetes. The Ss will have to research good sources of info online AND cite those sources #ohedchat
Q5: Currently using docs for an opinion piece. Slides are a S favorite. Introducing google classroom tomorrow with a thoughtful mid quarter question to answer. #ohedchat
Love them!! Social annotations, embedded Qs that allow for resubmission until they achieve mastery, potential model Ss responses, so good. I'm an AL ambassador because I believe in the platform. #ohedchat
My Ss often became each other's favorite sources of feedback--critical friends and thought partners all striving to help each other be better readers and writers. Loved it. Google docs supported that work. #ohedchat
5.1 No research I know of has shown a boost from technology so I no answers I trust. There are equity issues here too. While nearly all students have some type of computer in their home, they don’t all have equal access. #ohedchat
A5: Love @Newsela to bring current events to students at their level. IReady is a great tool to personalize literacy. Technology can make subjects that aren’t strong suits for students accessible. #ohedchat
#ohedchat That's for improving reading outcomes, right? Not for enhancing teaching of content and bringing the world inside the classroom walls, right?
A5: tech lets Ss collaborate like never before. Get an idea down and invite feedback from all to strengthen understanding. Whether it’s a doc or a blog, everyone can build on the conversation exponentially #ohedchat
2 Students from less affluent homes who attend less affluent schools have less time on the computer and thus less time to develop computer facility such as typing and searching savvy. #ohedchat
This is such an important point. We have to be careful about how heavily we rely on technology, especially when we have students who don't have ready or reliable access. #ohedchat
A4 Systems could better support Ts by providing interdisciplinary study opportunities. Systems ask for innovation in teaching & learning, but often fail to model innovation in scheduling. #ohedchat
A5: New forms of artificial intelligence scoring writing is emerging, anyone using this to increase writing and reduced the amount of grading which can be a time challenge for teachers #ohedchat
Until I see in action how this works, I am not happy about comp essay grading. I was extremely unhappy to discover that ELA 2 EOC was comp graded, especially w/o any clear idea of what the comp was looking for. #ohedchat
6.1 Vermont Writing Collaborative home of the Writing for Understanding approach used in EL Educations curriculum is excellent for the type of approach I outlined in number one above. Especially the Painted Essay. #ohedchat
A5 @BookCreatorApp BookCreatorApp is deal breaker!! My students create content every day based on their book group texts, & self selected books & nonfiction articles they pull in from other sources. Ss creating content is the goal. We want producers not consumers.#ohedchat
A5: Achieve3000 - adaptively lives in the learners zone of proximal development, triangulating access to curriculum with stretching the reader and an enjoyment of reading. #ohedchat
A5: So many way to get/give information with tech. It also allows Ts to collaborate and share Ss work so that r/w can be shared across content areas and audiences. It also helps level the field for all Ss by supporting them no matter their skill set. #ohedchat
A6: Broken record time. @BookCreatorApp is my favorite open ended tool for reading and writing. Kids love being published authors. Helps both reading and writing. #BookCreator#ohedchat
A6: Vermont Writing Collaborative is awesome; AchievetheCore Mini Assessments are great, but I'm a big fan of CommonLit to help support thematic paired texts. #ohedchat
3 EL Education’s open access free curriculum; their culminating assignments are beautifully aligned with the standards and the type of assignments we see on state tests. #ohedchat@ELeducation
A6 I like Notice and Note for reading, Goobric/Doctopus for writing assessment, and any writing project (especially @owpmu) for getting Ts starting on the writing path. #ohedchat
Scientific research has shown how children learn to read and how they should be taught. But many educators don't know the science and, in some cases, actively resist it.
As a result, millions of kids are being set up to fail. https://t.co/A7yfcpAfBS

Common Lit is awesome. So is @LitDesignCollab. I love their tools--the sentence frames for writing prompts are so helpful in crafting really good questions and tasks. #ohedchat
A6: a teacher I had in high school wrote a book called “The Writing Handbook”...it was everything a writer could ever want. The greatest resource though is your PLN...use those that have been there! #ohedchat

Agreed. We have challenge of grading & providing timely feedback. We want to increase practice & volume of writing. Any ideas on overcoming this obstacle ? #OHedchat
Don't comment on everything they write. Include peer revisers, and train them to look for glows and grows. Save the "grade" for the final draft. Use things like screencastify so you can talk your comments and not write them. Give up your free time. #ohedchat
A6: Easy.... The Writing Strategies Book and The Reading Strategies Book by @JSerravallo I don’t know what I would do without these resources! #ohedchat
