#K12ArtChat is an #ArtsEd chat that happens every Thurs 8:30 pm CST founded by #TeamGrundler @ArtGuy76 & @GrundlerArt & share Ss' art on Fridays via #FabArtsFri.
Welcome to #K12ArtChat. I am SO excited to host the chat today. I'm here as a parent to talk about family engagement through the arts. Who's with us today?
I'm Jeremy in Connecticut, the state from which our former National Teacher of the Year just announced she's running for Congress! I do editing/communications for an education agency that provides PD (also job-hunting; my position's being cut!). Here now as a parent. #K12ArtChat
I'm also a Board member of @ParentCamp. Feel free to reach out to me or @juliepile if you're interested in learning more. If you're a fan of edcamps, ParentCamps work similarly but involve more parents and are focused on family engagement. #K12ArtChat
A1. We used to get homework for our vacations that was meant to be a bit creative. I clearly remember helping my father make a letter box out of cardboard for my homework, and his dedication towards that task still remains unparalleled for me. It was so accurate. #K12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat when I was 7 my older sister hosted a "messy art party" for all the kids she babysat and my neighborhood friends. She put together everything from spraying canvases to a paint balloon pop race where you sat on the baloon!
A1: It's hard to say with our family #TeamGrundler between making art, seeing art, theatre and dance. Our family is an #artfamily but as a kid I remember my parents taking me to see Annie when I was six and we went to the local arts festival every year. #K12ArtChat
A1 as a kid, my parents and aunt brought me to a lot of Museums in NYC. Great memories. But much of my joy around art comes from helping my 11 year old daughter explore and develop her creative voice. #K12ArtChat
A1) This is a recent picture of my daughter starting at a painting from the Tarsila do Amaral exhibit at the @MuseumModernArt. She was considering who each person in the painting reminded her of in our own lives. Every day we're exposed to art is memorable. #K12ArtChat

#K12ArtChat I enjoyed seeing art from local artist at shows and enjoying art made by my family. My great grandpa painted on anything he could find..rocks or feed sacks...we have a lot of his work framed and hung in our house
Q2) We know family engagement is important to student success in general. How do we make the case that it is important for the art educator? #K12ArtChat

A1 There are so many! I helped my grandson paint SpongeBob on canvas for his BR. He couldn’t wait to get home after school to work on it. He was probably 6 yrs old. Bonding.#K12ArtChat
A2. An Educator needs to understand how a family can be involved with the student through arts. S/he needs to have those kinds of experiences for themselves to decide what's best for the student that would improve his/her coordination with the family for art's cause. #k12ArtChat
#k12artchat A2 #1 Communicate with your families. Communication and knowing the student well. Be involved and visible in the community- create excitement and warmth around what you do.
Q2) We know family engagement is important to student success in general. How do we make the case that it is important for the art educator? #K12ArtChat
A2) We'd benefit from disassociating family engagement somewhat from student "achievement." It's about much more than that. We're facilitating the growth of human beings. That's a joint effort. #K12ArtChat

A2: This past Open House, I had iPads out w/ apps open on it that Ss used all yr long. Ss got to show off what they could do w/ those apps to Parents. #K12ArtChat#WishedIHadPictures
#K12ArtChat A2. I publish my kiddos artwork online through artwork and our classroom fb page. The quality of work and engagement went up immediately when kids had the positive reactions from their parents about their artwork
A2: Parents are partners but can't help if they don't know or understand. Last year @LaurenWellArt had a student that I met and we convinced her to continue taking art. Her mom emailed me and we talked and she's loving art again this year. #K12ArtChat
A1- Some of my most memorable Art Making Experiences have come from summer PD. Yes you heard right! From summer PD! For 3 years now, I have been taking art workshops,in Berea, Ky at their Festival of Learnshops, creating with glassblowing & pastel, #K12ArtChat@BereaKYTourism
A1 Jeremy, you always find great opportunities for you family to notice and wonder deeply. That's the way it should be for all families. #k12artchat (I just popped in from Long Island)
A2 Not sure this is what you meant by this question, but I need my families engaged to sustain my program. They have to demand the arts for their children so the programs don't get cut. #k12artchat
A1 Jeremy, you always find great opportunities for you family to notice and wonder deeply. That's the way it should be for all families. #k12artchat (I just popped in from Long Island)
A1 I was fortunate to have a grandmother and mother that involved me in creative activities that spurred my curiosity on to discover the arts. #k12artchat
#K12ArtChat it is important to connect multiple ways and ways teachers are comfortable doing. I use Artsonia, Twitter, and Canvas to try to show what we are doing in the room.
A2 @WallerArt and I had our 1st Art Show at school. The Ss were excited to see their work framed. The parents seemed to enjoy all the beautiful artwork from each grade level. #k12ArtChat
A2: I think it is important to share my interests with my child so she can inherit and understand the value of what we teach and practice daily. Also, the education center @artinstitutechi hosts excellent programming and special events to engage families free of cost! #K12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat A2. I publish my kiddos artwork online through artwork and our classroom fb page. The quality of work and engagement went up immediately when kids had the positive reactions from their parents about their artwork
A3 Our students did a cool mural in the hallway a few years ago and our parents took on the responsibility of putting together the school play when we no longer had a drama teacher. #K12ArtChat
Final exhibit in tiny house of kindness. Complete w/qr codes linked to original music to accompany each rooms as selected emotion! Powerful insight from these Ss. #k12artchat

A3: At our School we have the watch Dog(Dads) program. It is great for them to see what I do in my room w/ the kids. That helps strengthen programs. #K12ArtChat
Q#1 my Dad was a history Professor @HofstraU and he took me the Emily Lowe Gallery (age 9). We held hands on the walk. Don’t remember the work/remember art appreciation = enthusiastic reverence! I was hooked

A3 I feel our performing arts program outshines visual arts regarding family engagement. Recently our photo teacher, Mr. V, had Ss teach their parents and had parents/students complete a photo project. #k12artchat
We have lots of hands on activities at night. Parents come learn through an arts-integrated lesson...help paint murals, etc. We have a lot of musical and theatrical performances. When we have teaching artists visit, we get them to do a session for parents. #k12artchat
A3: Facebook and Twitter, a collaborative rock painting project that invited Ps into our studio to paint, and newsletter requests for random items. Little pieces at a time to get them involved! #K12artchat
A3: Our Ts have art shows, art nights, steam nights and we hang art all over the city with receptions for families to attend the closing of most shows. #K12ArtChat
What a beautiful memory this is! And I love how it's the human connection you remember. We're not always going to get a reaction by sticking a painting in front of a kid. Make it an experience. #K12ArtChat

A2- Creating Art & honing your skills is very important for the Art Educator to be able to teach the skills Correctly. My students are Hungry to know more about certain art processes. If I didn’t ‘keep my art skills sharp’ then I wouldn’t be of any use to my students #k12artchat
A3 Our students did a cool mural in the hallway a few years ago and our parents took on the responsibility of putting together the school play when we no longer had a drama teacher. #K12ArtChat
Sure, It is a program for the Dads to be a bit more involved by following the Ss for the day. helping out the Ts & most importantly spending time with Kiddo #K12ArtChat#KidsDeserveIt
A3 Communicating to the parents about their Ss work being displayed around the county, and inviting them to the opening night, festival or competition. #k12ArtChat
My district has been so supportive to send me to art-specific learning experiences. Not just for educators but for artists. I have been able to hone my skills in ways that make me a better teacher because I better understand processes. #k12artchat.
So, this is great for you!!!!!
#K12ArtChat I have parents help during theater time. 5th gr play so 5th gr parents. I have parent help for our fine arts day. I have had some come in during a project type they like to do. Looking for more ways.
A3- I sent out sheets several times a year, with my students to take home, with my classroom Twitter link on it, explaining that I post regularly about the progress of projects, with pics and videos. Quite a few parents have added me, and follow our progress #K12ArtChat
A3) I am one of only 3 teachers in a 5 school elem only district. I have 625ish students/37 classes. We have a district art show on school budget vote nite. Each teacher shows 3 pieces from each class. AND a School show of EVERY student in spring. Teacher mounted. #k12artchat
A4) This is my photo of our daughter's elementary school's closing performance at its "Around the World in 80 Minutes" event. Families set up tables and food representing their countries of origin. Great way to involve families and celebrate the community's diversity. #K12ArtChat
A4. One of our fundraisers is a painting night for families. We pick a simple image and families come in and paint it together or individually. It’s a fun night that helps connect families and builds community. #K12ArtChat
A4. Color your school. Student groups can choose a wall which they decide to draw on or paint with their families. Teamwork, understanding, discipline, fun - all of these can be witnessed through a single event! #K12ArtChat
We bring in our families who want to showcase their own arts once/year at the Arts Fest and they do demos for visitors, but I wish we could do more to bring them in to demo throughout the year. That's been a challenge with people working, etc. https://t.co/QDBxJVJoDv#k12artchat
A4- New ways to engage families in their child’s art is thru some sort of social media. In this day and age, who Isn’t on a social media site! I think it’s ‘up to that students art teacher’ to advocate for their students using these digital social platforms #K12ArtChat
Sure, It is a program for the Dads to be a bit more involved by following the Ss for the day. helping out the Ts & most importantly spending time with Kiddo #K12ArtChat#KidsDeserveIt
A4 Several of our schools have done Showcases of Learning open to parents and the public . The band plays, art is displayed, and sometimes a meal is available. Great way for schools to let students shine.#K12ArtChat
A3- I sent out sheets several times a year, with my students to take home, with my classroom Twitter link on it, explaining that I post regularly about the progress of projects, with pics and videos. Quite a few parents have added me, and follow our progress #K12ArtChat
A3 When my children were in school, the arts were important. We attended the plays, all the art shows. The students all benefited from being exposed to the arts. #k12artchat
Love that your teaching artists connect with parents. Often the extent of our involvement is hearing it from our kids. That's great that our kids are exposed to it, but it's so much richer when we all are. #K12ArtChat
We have lots of hands on activities at night. Parents come learn through an arts-integrated lesson...help paint murals, etc. We have a lot of musical and theatrical performances. When we have teaching artists visit, we get them to do a session for parents. #k12artchat
A4: I imagine connections with families who own/run local businesses that would partnership with the school by displaying Art to be celebrated more often in the community. #K12ArtChat
Q5) As a parent, I'm particularly moved by students' passion in their annual school musicals and the student-led @UnifiedTheater. How can family and community engagement foster greater commitment and investment in the arts in schools? #K12ArtChat
A4 Attending school plays and concerts is a great way to communicate the importance of the arts. Nothing says I love art more than “Sold Out.” #K12ArtChat

A4: I love student led conferences -would love to see students lead their parents through their portfolios and show growth. Would be great to have older kids act as docents and do art tours through the schools #K12ArtChat
Lisa from FL. A4 Recently received @DonorsChoose grant&want 2 start art club where Ss can create "gifts" 4 family members.I have Cameo machine that I want to learn 2 use 4 the club. #k12artchat Also want 2 pair w @batool_attiya &create mindfulness "talk" signs around our school.
A1 I love taking friends and family to museums - especially @gfsnj - the best is when my dad tells me how he could make large abstract metal pieces better because he’s a better welder! #k12artchat
Hmm... I was only a participant. Good question! And seriously, it was awesome -- all the samples combined were more than adequate for dinner that night. #K12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat A3. Our district is doing a collaborative project next year where every 5th grader in our district is making a butterfly that will go on display at our district office.
I went to iPadPalooza 2 yrs ago, was so inspired my the Ss film Showcase that I tried starting a filmmaking club after school for 4th & 5th Gr. had some really good films #K12ArtChat@mrhooker

A5. It is through the approval of the family and the community that various events can be organized and students allowed to take a part in those. Family plays a big role in cultivating the habit of taking failures in a positive way. (1/2) #K12ArtChat
A2 family engagement is a big issue at my school. We try to increase engagement with art shows that are in the community and using digital displays - like @Artsonia - to share the work. Lots of tweets / website updates too! #K12artchat
Q2) We know family engagement is important to student success in general. How do we make the case that it is important for the art educator? #K12ArtChat
Q5) As a parent, I'm particularly moved by students' passion in their annual school musicals and the student-led @UnifiedTheater. How can family and community engagement foster greater commitment and investment in the arts in schools? #K12ArtChat
Reminds me of the international family nights that I ran each year for the districtwide ESL program. What great memories. One of HS Ss brought his cousin to dance the salsa with him and teach others. We also had artwork, food, Ss dressed in native garb. #k12artchat
Question: Do some of your schools have student portfolios that represent the whole child? I feel like art and academics are still treated separately for some reason. #K12ArtChat
A4: I love student led conferences -would love to see students lead their parents through their portfolios and show growth. Would be great to have older kids act as docents and do art tours through the schools #K12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat A5...I think when we have excited kids it leads to excited families. We as teachers have to share the excitement and using social media to do this is one way. When parents have knowledge of all we are doing it makes a huge difference in support.
A5. Any form of art based competition or event can either be a motivator or a de-motivator for students, and if the family is supportive no matter how student performs, s/he will always put more efforts towards the kind of art they want to pursue. (2/2) #K12ArtChat
A5- One way that family & community engagement can foster a greater commitment & investment to the arts in schools is by bringing them together thru a meaningful community project. Ours came today, with the placing of 4 Little Free Libraries by my Art 2 students #K12ArtChat
A3 last year I started one of those painted rock projects in town - it didn’t really bring the families to the school for art but it did get the whole town talking about art and enjoying art making! #K12artchat#hamiltonrocks
(Btw, this is last week's "Into the Woods"!)
A5) Use the passion that's already there. Students sob when the musical comes to an end. Parents, grandparents are patrons of the arts. In the spirit of @UnifiedArts, which originated at our local high school, be inclusive. #K12ArtChat
Q5) As a parent, I'm particularly moved by students' passion in their annual school musicals and the student-led @UnifiedTheater. How can family and community engagement foster greater commitment and investment in the arts in schools? #K12ArtChat
A4 we’ve never had an art night/art show in our building - we do a district show and participate in @mercer_nj_yam and @ArtEducatorsNJ opportunities. I’d love to have a family art night where everyone came to make and see art, have the students teach! #K12artchat
Note to self: Not every chat runs an hour.
I'm still here scrolling, but I will take this time to thank #K12ArtChat for this opportunity! And to all of you for your inspiration.
#k12artchat A6 students who have exposure to museums, galleries, performances, have a richer deeper connection to a creative inner core. It's important to expose young people to the ARTS.

A5 when families see their children excited about learning of any kind it’s good for everyone! An arts program that is visible to the public upon entering the school can help to show its value to the community. #k12artchat
Q5) As a parent, I'm particularly moved by students' passion in their annual school musicals and the student-led @UnifiedTheater. How can family and community engagement foster greater commitment and investment in the arts in schools? #K12ArtChat
A6 Exposing students to art outside of school makes it feel more relevant and more about just enjoying and interpreting it however you want; the power to feel as free as the artist did making it. #K12ArtChat
A5 I like to advertise the wonderful things that is happening at my son’s daycare through his work. This summer, I plan to volunteer to have kids create art once a week. The age group is elementary level. Wish me luck. #K12artchat
A6. The more a family has been involved with art in the past, the more they would want their kids to be involved in it, too. They can comprehend the importance and the necessity of the same to produce thinkers and bring out-of-the-box ideas to the table. #K12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat A6...having exposure to art outside of the classroom is important. It is easy to find art around you. 😁 I lkve hearing from students when we talk about an artwork that they have seen it before somewhere. It shows they have found a connection.

A6 I’ve found students w families who enjoy the arts are likely to place value on the class & content. Children from Families who don’t participate in arts related activities outside of school can also succeed&value arts learning but they may take a bit of convincing! #k12artchat
A6 I am trilled when a student has knowledge about art that I didn't teach them. I've always wanted them to share their family art experiences. Maybe through twitter or FB? #K12ArtChat
It is the bonds that are made at family nights that bring people from different cultures and backgrounds together and moving toward unification of thought. #k12artchat
