A1 - Being able to say that I know failure is a distinct possibility and that my work with take that into account. I have been thinking a lot about design thinking and how a growth mindset matches up with it. Love the idea of implementing failure into my lessons #masterychat
A1: Growth mindset means that when you slip on ice on the way to get in your car to go to the movies you don't turnaround and sit at the table. You get up and you walk to the car. Growth mindset is about knowing that over time you can become a MASTER! #masterychat@ERobbPrincipal
A1 The ability to see learning as a dynamic, ever changing entity. The mindset that the brain can change, adapt, grow, learn. The belief in the power of self over the power of genetics or circumstance. #masterychat
A1 For me, growth mindset means that we all take different paths to reach the same destination; it looks different for all of us & I need to remember that each of my students has their own paths! #masterychat
Q1- The concept of growth mindset was developed by Carol Dwek and outlined in her book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. What is your personal definition of growth mindset? #MasteryChat@thegridmethod#StarfishClub
A1) I actually just finished this book and I highly recommend it! #growthmindset is all about “yet”. The process of learning and improving the process of our work/craft/mind #MasteryChat
A1: Being able to realize your weaknesses, reflect on them, and then ask questions/drive yourself to get better at that skill/concept. #masterychat#growthmindset
A1- #Growthmindset is when people believe individual talents can be improved upon through hard work, perseverance, ongoing feedback, & believing in themselves. People with a growth mindset embrace failure & see mistakes as huge opportunities for growth. #MasteryChat#StarfishClub
There’s always room to grow. Just because I don’t know if now doesn’t mean I won’t know it in the future, either near or distant. I just have to put the work in. #MasteryChat
Q1- The concept of growth mindset was developed by Carol Dwek and outlined in her book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. What is your personal definition of growth mindset? #MasteryChat@thegridmethod#StarfishClub
Q1- The concept of growth mindset was developed by Carol Dwek and outlined in her book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. What is your personal definition of growth mindset? #MasteryChat@thegridmethod#StarfishClub
A1- growth mindset is understanding that you are not an IQ score, but instead you have the capacity to learn and expand your brain through having an open mind and working hard to learn the material #Masterychat
A1: growth mindset is an ideology in which you continually strive to do better. It doesn't always work out but it isn't a set back. You keep moving forward.
#MasteryChat
A1: I believe growth mindset is teaching students the power of the brain. The fact that it is a muscle, and it can do amazing things. Overall empowering them to be strong learners. #MasteryChat
A1: growth mindset to me is knowing I can do more, even if it is hard or seems impossible right now I can with perseverance and determination. #masterychat
A1 A growth mindset is the belief that all kids can learn at high levels. That even if time to master learning varies, we are all capable of gaining skills & knowledge necessary. Growth mindset goes against traditional structure & challenges the one-sizes-fits-all. #masterychat
Q1- The concept of growth mindset was developed by Carol Dwek and outlined in her book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. What is your personal definition of growth mindset? #MasteryChat@thegridmethod#StarfishClub
A1: Applies to students, teachers but also equally in the workforce that we can get smarter through hard work and good strategies not just innate intelligence #masterychat#starfishclub
A1: I believe a growth mindset is a mindset that realizes it does NOT have all the answers and is ALWAYS open to learning new things. #MasteryChat#UMedTech
A1: there’s a boy at my school who is the absolute embodiment of growth mindset. He STRUGGLES to learn, but he remains positive and says that he’s going to keep trying until he gets it. To me, that’s #growthmindset#masterychat
Q1- The concept of growth mindset was developed by Carol Dwek and outlined in her book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. What is your personal definition of growth mindset? #MasteryChat@thegridmethod#StarfishClub
A1: I believe it is vital to be a life-long learner. This allows a person to challenge their thoughts and continue to grow, change, adapt, experiment, fail, refocus- all through reflection. #MasteryChat
✨A1: One of my favorite examples of having a growth mindset is this YouTube Video. It proves that success is all about having an open mindset, learning from failure, adjusting, and relentlessly pursing your goals! https://t.co/uUOlAbQ7VE ✨#masterychat
Hicham from Casablanca here..
A1: focus on performing as best as you could so far, while welcoming/seeking new possibilities.. especially those you can only discover on the action track #MasteryChat@thegridmethod#StarfishClub
A1: Applies to students, teachers but also equally in the workforce that we can get smarter through hard work and good strategies not just innate intelligence #masterychat#starfishclub
A1 Kurt Hahn Said it best: I regard it as the foremost task of education to insure the survival of these qualities: an enterprising curiosity, an undefeatable spirit, tenacity in pursuit, readiness for sensible self denial, and above all, compassion.
#MasteryChat
Absolutely! Innate intelligence does exist, but growth mindset is like a magic key that unlocks it. I know far too many students who have incredible cognitive ability but are not in possession of that critical element. #masterychat
In reply to
@Al_Dhalla, @melanie_korach, @thegridmethod
Hey #masterychat folks, thoughts on how "grit" is taught in schools? Had a clinical placement in college w/ a veteran T who stressed grit alongside growth mindset. It was a unique approach that the Ss seemed to latch onto!
I had a kiddo tell a peer the other day if you say you can't you can't if you say you can you can. Out of the mouth of a 3rd grader. Love it! #MasteryChat
A1. A growth mindset is extended learning beyond what you already know in a subject area and keeping an open mindframe to new ideas and areas of discussion. #masterychat
Taking a page right out of Benjamin Blooms 2-sigma article right there. Time to mastery learning is the variable, not necessarily innate intelligence! #masterychathttps://t.co/UW4RrFusxe
Hey! They’re doing really well; indoor season just wrapped up so now we have a couple weeks of practice until we head outside and the real fun begins! #masterychat
Hahaha We took students to see the stage play on Tuesday...so catchy, great show and it has been in my head ever since too!! Madagascar the Musical #masterychat
A2 - Growth Mindset is an asset for both T's and S's. As T's we should aways strive to #teachbetter and students need to understand the power of Failure and that it can drive progress and growth! If S's aren't struggling / Failing they aren't GROWING. #masterychat
Can we emphasize that this is for students AND teachers? I feel like sometimes our practices and words inhibit a #growthmindset with our students #masterychat
✨A1: One of my favorite examples of having a growth mindset is this YouTube Video. It proves that success is all about having an open mindset, learning from failure, adjusting, and relentlessly pursing your goals! https://t.co/uUOlAbQ7VE ✨#masterychat
I always tell my students (and the teachers I coach) that failure is a necessary step in learning. If you aren't failing, you aren't learning! #masterychat
A2 If we don't take risks- we don't grow. If we don't fail during those risks (at times)- we don't grow. If we ONLY do what is safe and known- we don't grow! #masterychat
We as educators need to remember that a growth mindset gives us courage to engage in new and challenging things, but does not give us the capacity to do so. Strategies are essential! #masterychat
A2: It is important to have a growth mindset because it helps you focus on the positive. @melanie_korach inspires me to do so, and it is crucial. Failing forward means that, even if I mess up which I oftentimes do, I am still pushing myself further than I have been. #masterychat
if no one had a growth mindset nothing would ever be achieved! its important to learn from your mistakes and use them to refocus on how to succeed #masterychat
A2 Every student deserves to have an adult that believes he/she is capable of learning. They need someone who says no matter the time, no matter the way: YOU WILL learn. YOU CAN learn. We need to allow mistakes/tries to support learning and celebrate every step. #MasteryChat
A1 growth mindset means believing that anything is possible if you try. When I was a little girl my mom used to say I worked on “the think system” meaning if I believed I could do something I made it happen #MasteryChat
Really #growthmindset has but one specific definition: learning has no peak or plateau. There is, literally, always room to grow. #masterychat - Ss should explore there own potentials and passions. Our QUEST resource does just that. https://t.co/VJPlOpEzwB
A1: Growth mindset is the outlook that we can improve and that we are not limited in our learning. This links so closely with situational motivation and personal connections to other people
#masterychat
Q1- The concept of growth mindset was developed by Carol Dwek and outlined in her book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. What is your personal definition of growth mindset? #MasteryChat@thegridmethod#StarfishClub
A2: Growth mindset produced the lightbulb, cured polio, put a man on the moon, created Hershey's chocolate, led to profound historical discoveries, created Harry Potter. Why wouldn't you want one? The point of failing fwd is that it is feedback for the future. #masterychat
A2: The most powerful learning occurs when we reflect, revisit and revise work. When students have a growth mindset they recognize that mastery is a journey not a single outcome #MasteryChat
A2 Growth Mindset sets the stage for the belief that you WILL get there. There is not a straight path from success to failure, just ask Oprah, Walt Disney, Einstein, Edison,................ #masterychat
A2: Because failure is a real life event. If we are seen as "perfect individuals" we are missing out on showing our students how to bounce back during mishaps.
Having a growth mindset really does put kids first! Otherwise, we become stagnant after a couple of year.
A2 We need to model growth mindset for our Ss each day by how we approach difficult tasks. I was reminded of this picture I took at a conference about allowing Ss choice & focusing on their own version of falling forward & growing #masterychat
A2 It's important to know that failure is only a stepping stone to success. We are used to instant gratification so we think failure is the end. Growth mindset helps us realize that it means try again, work harder, step back regroup. #MasteryChat
A2 ~ Failure leads to growth when we take the time to reflect and learn from our mistakes. Failure also challenges us to buckle down and work harder to meet success, to persevere :)! #masterychat
A lot of life is failing forward. Being able to acknowledge that failure is part of the process and that people have to fail to move forward. I did a conditional response Google Form with my students recently and they were flabbergasted at the difficulty. #masterychat
A1 - P2 - But then we had a discussion about failure and why it was important in the context of the novel (Animal Farm) to discuss failure. Suddenly the students went from this is a drag to this is a challenge and it was amazing #masterychat
A2 It's important because if you aren't bouncing back from failure you aren't truly learning. ALL Ss have a #growthmindset we just have to help them use it! #MasteryChat
A2: A growth mindset means you are openminded to what is best for your Ss or Ts. If we fail because we are growing that is failing forward as opposed to failing because of our refusal to change or grow. #MasteryChat#UMedTech
A2: Hi Terry 4th grade T dropping in. A growth mindset allows you to fail forward bcs you're constantly rflctng evluting and lrng from mishaps. That's what lrng is! #MasteryChat
I think the #GrowthMIndset is realizing we (humans) are on a journey and that nobody is stuck where they are at emotionally, intellectually, socially, and physically. We can reach forward if we want to do so. #Masterychat
A2- It's important to have a #growthmindset as it allows us to see failure as an opportunity to grow & #failforward as we recover from setbacks. People with this mindset embrace the #PowerOfYet & adopt an attitude of I CAN'T DO IT YET instead of giving up. #MasteryChat
A2: I don't think of it as failing, instead of mistakes & learning. W/out mistakes we find learn. I tell my Ss I learn how to help them learn from our mistakes. #masterychat
A2 in life we all fail at something, it is how most of us learn. School is a “safe” place to fail and try again. Ss need to be encouraged to try again and again and know that we all do the same. #masterychat
A2: #growthmindset allows for Ts to assess students where they are, and leave room for growth. My Ss have learned that failure just means they can reflect, relearn, practice, and try again! Failing is not an end, it is the beginning of the journey! #masterychat
A1 growth mindset means to me the journey to something that is always changing. I will never be done because there is always growth and things to learn. #MasteryChat
Bingo! Failure can break you or inspire you to push ahead! If you push forward you can become stronger, diamonds made through pressure right? #masterychat
#masterychat Q2 The word reflection really fits here. The ability to use failure to your advantage and grow is essential. I also love the thought of "you just haven't learned something yet", instead of fixating on something as not possible.
A2: growth mindset is important for both students AND teachers to identify that we have potential to grow and learn more as we try to be the best version of ourselves. Identifying that while also promoting risk taking can result in positive outcomes and benefits! #masterychat
a2 Ss need to know they aren't permanently "stuck." Pop media says, "I can't change how I feel," but learning science liberates and empowers #MasteryChat
A2: GM is important for all individuals. We should always strive to improve and take risks. You never know what will happen from taking these risks. Your life could change! I never thought I'd be where I am at now in life, but my risks/failures got me here. #masterychat
Growth mindset is important because it teaches students that to be successful it requires hard work, not giftedness. Which means when students do fail they’ll be able to see it as a learning experience rather than a set back. #masterychat
✨ A2: USE YOUR SUPERPOWERS! You are in control of your own destiny. Having a growth mindset teamed with hard work, effort, and persistence will make you unstoppable at reaching your goals. #MasteryChat ✨
A2- I've been reading The Gift of Failure and it hits on the idea of growth mindset so well! We have to praise the efforts of everyone not their abilities! Celebrate their challenges and attempts and missteps in their learning paths. Abilities grow with effort! #masterychat
The true goal is to move from the bulletin board to having that belief by all staff in every school at all times. In vocabulary and actions! My dream. #MasteryChat
A2: I believe failure is just your First Attempt In Learning! I try to model this with my own attempts in all areas. I hope to encourage students to view failures in this more productive light. #MasteryChat
A2: Failing is inevitable, it is part of success as success is a journey not a destination. So, when we encounter something we can’t yet do, we increase our effort, try new strategies, and end up learning more @melanie_korach@thegridmethod#masterychat#starfishclub
And this ties so closely to formative & summative assessment practices. We can’t easily say we endorse growth mindsets when we put undue emphasis on grades or not allow process or revision #MasteryChat
A2: A #GrowthMindset reassures learners that “being good” at something isn’t limited to certain people. Through purposeful practice (including failure), all learners can be successful at whatever it is that interests them. #masterychat
A1. Kirsten from MD (and gymnastics practice). I teach grade 7/8 ELA and dig comm. I define growth mindset as the belief that one can always learn and improve. Learning and knowledge are never static and always changing, as long as one keeps trying. #MasteryChat
Extremely important for everyone. Imagine if everyone gave up the first time they failed. Failure forces us to reevaluate our methods, critique our process to improve, find a way forward. #GrowthMindset#MasteryChat
A2 growth mindset is important because students needs are not the same. We need to adjust and adapt to meet all of our kids, which at times seems like a moving target. We have to move with it. #MasteryChat
A2. In a growth mindset, the brain is taking in new ideas for learning and comprehending, as we are learning, failures may occur. Practice is necessary for mastery in learning. #masterychat
A1: You never stop growing. You don’t focus on a final destination or a grade. You focus on the process. You recognize where you were, where you are, and you want to go, and you have a plan to get there. #MasteryChat
A lot of life is failing forward. Being able to acknowledge that failure is part of the process and that people have to fail to move forward. I did a conditional response Google Form with my students recently and they were flabbergasted at the difficulty. #masterychat
"The only way you can invent tomorrow is if you break out of the enclosure that the school system has provided for you by the exams written by people who are trained in another generation." - Neil deGrasse Tyson #edchat#edreform#restorehumanity#satchat#MasteryChat
Parent peeking in from Connecticut.
A1) Only Dweck can define that concept. I personally focus on growth in self and others, rather than deficits. And I appreciate setbacks for their growth experiences--but recognize inequities that distribute setbacks unfairly. #MasteryChat
Q1- The concept of growth mindset was developed by Carol Dwek and outlined in her book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. What is your personal definition of growth mindset? #MasteryChat@thegridmethod#StarfishClub
A2 ~ Failure leads to growth when we take the time to reflect and learn from our mistakes. Failure also challenges us to buckle down and work harder to meet success, to persevere :)! #masterychat
A2 We need to model growth mindset for our Ss each day by how we approach difficult tasks. I was reminded of this picture I took at a conference about allowing Ss choice & focusing on their own version of falling forward & growing #masterychat
A2 When students view learning as fixed, as an enigma out of their direct control, they remove themselves from active learning. They lose that ownership of thinking and learning that is so powerful.
I like to sum up #failingforward in the words of Walt Disney. #masterychat
A2: It's only like getting in line with the natural way things start, develop and end.. a Universal Law.
A POV that keeps the drama away from the journey of a learner (teacher or admin being learners in that mindset)=failure is natural feedback #MasteryChat#StarfishClub
A1: A growth mindset is when you see opportunities for growth in all your endeavors. It’s only caring about improvement and not the status that might come with it. #MasteryChat
Growth mindset prepares us for the world. Your going to get knocked down a lot in life and you need to know how to get back up. Failing forward is simply the idea of failing in order to get closer to accomplishment more or better yet, perfection. #masterychat
A1 growth mindset means believing that anything is possible if you try. When I was a little girl my mom used to say I worked on “the think system” meaning if I believed I could do something I made it happen #MasteryChat
A2b If we let the fear of failure get in our way, we may miss out on so much! Sometimes, we need to leap before we look! https://t.co/YedccM1V3z#masterychat
A3 - Growth Mindset is focused on how to solve, improve, move past obstacles while Fixed mindset is focused on how obstacles stop us from moving forward. One mindset is solution focused the other is focused on problems / complaints / excuses. #masterychat#growthmindset
A3 A fixed mindset is STUCK. It is the belief that learning and growth cannot occur. To change this mindset, we have to help the individual to UNlearn the negative mindset. #masterychat
A3: A fixed mindset is believing that an ability is innate and cannot be improved on. A growth mindset involves thinking that you can reach your unlocked potential through hard work, etc. I fall victim to having a fixed mindset at times, but I reflect and grow. #masterychat
A3 - Growth Mindset is focused on how to solve, improve, move past obstacles while Fixed mindset is focused on how obstacles stop us from moving forward. One mindset is solution focused the other is focused on problems / complaints / excuses. #masterychat#growthmindset
A3 Growth mindset=I can achieve it if I am willing to work at it. Fixed mindset=I can't do it. I am just not good at it.
It is important for both Ss and Ts to know what their tendency is so they can listen for the fixed voice and change it. #masterychat
A1 Growth Mindset is the capability to access the ceiling level of ability for each individual person; it encourages strength, consistency, and preservence. #masterychat
A2 It's important to embody the #growthmindset because it reminds us that all experiences good & bad, are opportunities to reflect, apply lessons learned, & continue our progress toward our goals. #Failingforward gives us encouragement to keep going despite obstacles #MasteryChat
A2 I believe a growth mindset is important because it helps us to believe in ourselves and others. It is that voice inside that says, "Don't give up, you are getting there! It may be slow, and you may have obstacles but trying leads you in the right direction!" #MasteryChat
A2 having a growth mindset helps us realize that we don’t have to be perfect. There is a learning curve and as long as we stay open to the possibility of success it’s there waiting for us. Failure is part of learning and ww grow and learn from each experience #MasteryChat
A2b If we let the fear of failure get in our way, we may miss out on so much! Sometimes, we need to leap before we look! https://t.co/YedccM1V3z#masterychat
A2. Mistakes and failures are necessary for growth and learning. I love the phrase "fail forward" because it is encouraging and ensures that you continue to try and progress through the setbacks. It is just as important for teachers AND students to fail forward. #MasteryChat
A2: A growth mindset is about acting to arrive at your destination. A non-growth mindset is like staring at your GPS and hoping you will end up at your destination. #MasteryChat
#masterychat Q3 Fixed is not allowing the mind to believe we can achieve something. GM is having a more adaptable mind and believing that progress can occur. Any educator with a completely "fixed" mindset would be doing a disservice to our youth. We need to be role models.
A3 "I can't" vs "I can't yet..." is a key difference between the two. As with anything (everything) in education, in order to recognize the mindsets out Ss have, we must first know them! #relationships#masterychat
A3: Fixed mindset never bakes again because they burnt the cake. Growth mindset goes back and figures out that next time they don't need to set the oven to 500 degrees. Growth mindset is all about learning. #masterychat
A2) Growth mindset is so important for failing forward bc Ss don’t get stuck with looking for the “right” answer, they can value the journey towards FINDING the answers. #growthmindset#masterychat
A3: If a student states "I just can't do it" it is a clue to a fixed mindset. The response should be you just can't do it YET! Readiness to learn is not the same as ability. We have to help every student get to their readiness point. #MasteryChat
Growth mindset means you have the ability to grow and change from your successes and your failures. Physically, mentally, and emotionally. Fixed mindset means you are stuck the way you are. Not flexible. Not growing. #masterychat
A3: A #fixedmindset limits Ss’ motivation since they believe they CANNOT be successful. We must help Ss see that they can make progress and that past failure doesn’t mean future failure via conversations, feedback, and formative assessment #sblchat#MasteryChat
A2: Failure in a moment is part of the natural growth process. Embracing a failure as feedback and using that feedback to press on is essential for maintaining a growth mindset. #MasteryChat
I think the #GrowthMIndset is realizing we (humans) are on a journey and that nobody is stuck where they are at emotionally, intellectually, socially, and physically. We can reach forward if we want to do so. #Masterychat
A3: A fixed mindset doesn't allow for change and a lot of times it fixates on the negative. A growth mindset is more positive and sees the light ahead. #MasteryChat
Growth mindset prepares us for the world. Your going to get knocked down a lot in life and you need to know how to get back up. Failing forward is simply the idea of failing in order to get closer to accomplishment more or better yet, perfection. #masterychat
A3a growth mindset is always wanting to learn more and be better where fixed mindset is either you fail and dont try again OR your content with your successes and dont want to try for more #masterychat
A3- I find that students who are identified as gifted struggle with this the most! I think that everything has come so easy and they are "smart" so the thought of failing crushes them! These Ss (and their parents) struggle with getting away from their fixed mindset #Masterychat
A3 - #Growthmindset people believe we can achieve our goals by learning from mistakes & never giving up when faced with failure. #Fixedmindset people give up easily & have difficulty seeing failure as growth, requiring lots of feedback, support & mentoring to grow! #masterychat
A3: Growth = I've got so much I can learn. Fixed = If this doesn't work, I am done with trying. Fixed is so absolute while growth had limitless power. #masterychat I can always grow!
A3 A growth mindset = the true belief that everyone CAN learn. Fixed mindset is that we are predestined to a certain level of success. We need to identify the belief & move forward. All kids deserve to know that they CAN do anything. Remove barriers. Make it happen. #MasteryChat
A3: One example would be for teachers to reframe deficits as opportunities for growth when talking to their students so they believe it CAN be done even if they do not feel naturally gifted @melanie_korach@thegridmethod#masterychat#starfishclub
A3 Growth is seeing the ability to get better or overcome challenges. Fixed means that you feel that you can't do, not smart or talented enough. By recognizing it, we are able to promote the thinking we want to have and find ways to stop our negative thoughts. #MasteryChat
A3: Everyone is a teacher. Everyone is a learner. My students love it when I have them teach and I sit in their seat and learn. Everyone can grow. Sometimes it takes extra effort. #MasteryChat
A3 - A fixed mindset does not set itself up to even try. I find that helping students overcome this mindset is best done through coaching each student and then giving them some options in their learning. That can help to mediate the student's struggles. #masterychat
A3b Ss with a fixed minset will need more encouraging then students with a growth mindset. if you dont know their mindset you wont be pushing them to their full potential- especially if they need the push! #masterychat
A3: the difference to me is about believing. With growth mindset you have to ability to believe that you can accomplish greatness and success, whereas fixed is the inability recover and believe that you can do better #masterychat
A3 A growth mindset means I can't do this YET, a fixed mindset means I can't do this I'm not going to try ☹️ ex. I'm not a math person, or I can't draw ☹️ #masterychat
A3: fixed mind set is like ordering the same food every day. Yes, it's good but your left wanting more. A growth mindset you step outside of your comfort zone and try something new. You might not like the new food or you'll open yourself to a whole new world.
#masterychat
A3: Growth Mindset is using strategies such as positive self talk and teamwork to work through the challenges. Fixed Mindset is feeling you cannot work through the challenges and using negative thoughts that bring yourself down. #masterychat
A3: Growth mindset prioritizes progress whereas the fixed mindset fixates on outcomes. Students who are behind grade levels completely disengage if they embody a fixed mindset. They need to believe in the learning process before they engage in it #masterychat
A3 Growth mindset tells us that WE have a voice in our learning. That WE can take action in our learning. Fixed mindset tells us that we are at the mercy of accidents of fate, genetics, circumstance.
There is nothing more powerful than believing in the power of WE. #masterychat
A3: Everyone is different. We must understand this. Then we are intentional in how we encourage them to grow which looks different for each person:) #MasteryChat#UMedTech
A3: I hear a lot of fixed mindset statements, especially because #iteachmath . #growthmindset has allowed my students to understand that making mistakes will make your brain grow (Thanks @joboaler ) and we ALL have the potential to learn and understand math! #masterychat
I had an amazing professor @almilleISU who pushed me forward and always believed in me even when I did not believe in myself. She told me that a peer did not know me or my ability like she did. I had tears in my eyes. #masterychat
A3: A growth mindset helps a person to persevere. A fixed mindset means you just stop and can't go on. We can help those by building relationships and trust and by encouraging them. #MasteryChat
To me #growthmindset means moving forward at your rate. #fixedmindset means spinning your wheels, playing it safe. They require different approaches. It can sometimes take a lot of convincing for the #fixedmindset to realize there is really no timeline on learning. #MasteryChat
A3 growth mindset is facing a problem and seeing it as a challenge... fixed mindset is facing a problem and using it as an excuse not to do something. #MasteryChat
A2:You don’t focus on what you don’t know or weren’t able to do today. You focus on what you have done today that you couldn’t do yesterday and what you want to do tomorrow. Failure doesn’t exist because you see the whole picture rather than the step you are on. #MasteryChat
A3: Working with a student (or parent, or colleague) w at fixed mindset requires much more of a growth mindset on MY PART! Bring on the challenge! I won't quit. #masterychat
A3: Fixed mindset never bakes again because they burnt the cake. Growth mindset goes back and figures out that next time they don't need to set the oven to 500 degrees. Growth mindset is all about learning. #masterychat
A3: Growth vs Fixed is your outlook on learning. Growth believes through effort you can get smarter. Fixed mindset believes you are born with a certain IQ. #MasteryChat
Understanding when you have been triggered into a fixed mindset is crucial as it allows you to talk back to the fixed mindset voice. Being able to realize when I'm in a fixed mindset has been an important step in helping me grow. #MasteryChat
A3: “I can’t do it” vs. “I can’t do it YET.” Understanding a student’s mindset can help us figure out ways to motivate him/her to push the upper limits. #MasteryChat
A3: I visualize a growth mindset as demonstrating flexibility and perseverance. It can be messy and scattered, but effective. A Fixed mindset follows a very linear flow and does not allow for as many options or avenues in problem solving. #MasteryChat
A3: joking late — Jarrod from Ohio. A #growthmindset is an ever evolving & challenging mindset. The world today & tomorrow is about creativity, that’s what a growth mindset builds. A #fixedmindset is stuck in neutral. #masterychat
A3:
Growth Mindset = ready to take things to the next level.
Fixed mindset= I'm not there yet. Maybe I am not comfortable or maybe I feel overwhelmed by the change.
Be patient. Be kind. We all start somewhere. #MasteryChat
A3: fun craver vs drama seeker
important bc u need to separate the healthy from the frustrated so as to not to break the machine.
Also, we can help by providing them w/ opportunity to Act
Most frustration maybe caused by a false sense of not belonging #MasteryChat#StarfishClub
A3: the difderence between #growthmindset and #fixedmindset is the belief in what you can achieve. Fixed is that you are born with certain talents and abilities. Growth is where you can learn and grow through trying new things and persevering #MasteryChat
A3: it is similar to nature vs. nurture. Students often in my math courses come in with fixed mindset saying they’re bad at math without even doing any work! Growth mindset indicates how ALL students have the ability to master anything... even Math! #masterychat
A2 Every student deserves to have an adult that believes he/she is capable of learning. They need someone who says no matter the time, no matter the way: YOU WILL learn. YOU CAN learn. We need to allow mistakes/tries to support learning and celebrate every step. #MasteryChat
A3 We need to be aware of gifted & talented Ss who may fall through the cracks because they "get it". I did a report in college about how (sometimes) those G/T Ss are more at risk than our low level learners. Let's connect with ALL students, always! #masterychat
A3 Persons with #Growthmindset seek to learn how they can apply experiences to next steps. #Fixedmindset views failures as a permanent ends. Identifying the type of mindset individuals have helps us structure our coaching & support approaches to help create progress #MasteryChat
A3. In a fixed mindset, a P is not open to any to ideas or growth in learning vs. a growth mindset where a person is open to new ideas in learning and concepts. It's imp. to identify the mindset to try different approaches in learning w/ ind. w each of these types. #masterychat
Yes! As others have mentioned, focus on grades. Ss look at them and say, okay, that's it, I failed/passed and move on. Growth mindset focuses on continued learning! #masterychat
In reply to
@PreK33, @melanie_korach, @thegridmethod
Yes! The most important skill we can give our students is an ability to fail well. It is the single most important trait that they will need when the going gets tough- which it will! #masterychat
Growth mindset prepares us for the world. Your going to get knocked down a lot in life and you need to know how to get back up. Failing forward is simply the idea of failing in order to get closer to accomplishment more or better yet, perfection. #masterychat
A3 ~ Fixed mindset is stagnant, that learning ends with an assessment ~ with a passing or failing score. Ss need to be encouraged to use these assessments as a learning tool, not something to crumple up and throw in the garage :)! #masterychat
A3. I feel growth mindset is tied more to effort & fixed is connected to the belief that intelligence determines success and not alterable. It is important to listen to comments Ss and Ts make to help ID their mindset and move them towards positivity/possibility. #MasteryChat
A3: Fixed mindset means you believe that you have reached your knowledge ceiling in learning.
A fixed mindset has more to do with self esteem and attitude. The more positive attitude and self awareness one has the greater the potential for a growth mindset #masterychat
It can take one teacher/ one professor to change a persons life. This professor impacted my life in a positive way and still keeps in touch with me. She advocates for me, and she was the 1st to tell me she appreciates me because of my kindness. #masterychat
I had an amazing professor @almilleISU who pushed me forward and always believed in me even when I did not believe in myself. She told me that a peer did not know me or my ability like she did. I had tears in my eyes. #masterychat
A3 With a fixed mindset a person doesn’t feel they can do any better. They willing not try again. It is hard to change a fixed mindset. That is why it is so important to foster a growth mindset from early childhood. #masterychat
A3: I hear a lot of fixed mindset statements, especially because #iteachmath . #growthmindset has allowed my students to understand that making mistakes will make your brain grow (Thanks @joboaler ) and we ALL have the potential to learn and understand math! #masterychat
I think we've all been stuck on the fixed side at times. It's a great opportunity to reflect and understand both, and be able to move forward! #masterychat
A3 - #Growthmindset people believe we can achieve our goals by learning from mistakes & never giving up when faced with failure. #Fixedmindset people give up easily & have difficulty seeing failure as growth, requiring lots of feedback, support & mentoring to grow! #masterychat
A3: Depending on the mindset of individual students in my classroom is how I approach certain situations. I use different language and the "push" to move forward is not the same either. #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat A3- having a fixed mindset will prevent you from going places or trying new things. Innovators usually have a growth mindset and are not afraid of change
A3: It is always important understand where those you work with are in terms of what they value. It’s the key to collaboration. Do they value the comfort of the status quo, or so they value establishing a new status quo? #MasteryChat
A4 Wanting to lose weight and get healthy. I thought I was stuck until I decided I had nothing to lose if I tried...trying and failing is better than NOT trying. #masterychat
A3 A #fixedmindset teacher teaches the way they always have. A #growthmindset teacher is constantly learning and improving their lessons & teaching. #masterychat
A4: When I had to take an EdTech class in college, I thought "How dumb is this idea? What's wrong with how I learned?" Well, it took me less than a year to realize I was completely wrong. I now used edtech very often and am a huge fan -opened so many doors for my Ss. #MasteryChat
Agreed. Being “gifted” doesn’t mean they get it. And labeling them as so is hurtful to their development — they think they can’t ask questions because they’re “gifted” (which can increase anxiety & hopelessness). #masterychat
I always love your deep questions. Students deserve to have an adult in their life that pushes them to succeed, not for the adult's glory, but to see the student become what they can be and attain their potential. #masterychat
A4 In college, I had to learn/accept that I couldn't do everything all the time. I had to say no sometimes, I had to balance a busy schedule, and it was tough at 1st because in my mind I wanted it "my way" but I learned & I can share that w/ my upperclassmen! #masterychat
A4: This will date me, but when we went form half-day to full- day kdg. I thought it was crazy!! I think the Ss were more resilient than I was the first couple of years! #MasteryChat
A4: Hmmmm... I feel like I went through most of my schooling with a fixed mindset. It probably was not until the end of AP Lang when I got my first B that I started to embrace the idea of learning and seeing what would happen next. #masterychat
I completely agree! I've been testing less, and assessing more- giving Ss more feedback and points rather than grades. It's all about continuing to grow and learn! #masterychat
During my 70 day Residency, @SteeleThoughts talked to me for almost two hours about the power of a PLN on Twitter. I was like ... 🤔. Then I thought, if it was powerful for him ... it can’t hurt to give it go. #MasteryChat#UMedTech
I just wondered whether one supportive adult can make up for 10 unsupportive ones. If you work with or raise kids, why would you not have this mindset? #MasteryChat
A4 I had a fixed mindset when it came to being able to lead PD and share knowledge about learning and education. In 2011,one person believed in me, encouraged me and I have now moved to working with many districts. I am able, I CAN and I love to do what I can. #MasteryChat
A4: In college I had fixed mindset about Twitter. I thought there was no way I'd ever communicate with and learn from educators. That changed last year thanks to Todd Nesloney #MasteryChat
A4: I had a fixed mindset with integrating content areas with Project Based Learning. At first, it was a struggle, but I connected, researched, learned from others and now I try to think this critically so I can integrate most of my students' learning! #MasteryChat
A4 I had a #fixedmindset for 20 years when my confidence was shattered by a friend who tore apart my writing. This caused me to give up my passion. Support & mentoring by people in the #StarfishClub helped me heal & rekindled my #growthmindset#MasteryChat
A4:When in HS I dropped out bc I felt I had learned everything they could of taught me. 20 years later and a lot of heartache I finished my BA. Boy was I wrong! #masterychat
A4: I used to struggle with math and still do at times. I was worried about passing the content test and ended up getting a 92 percent due to working hard and going over skills on @khanacademy. My former professor @almilleISU supported me in this process. #masterychat
A4: I definitely grew uo with a fixed mindset. As a teacher, I have wirked hard to overcome that, try new things, and ne okay with failure. I feel like I've come a long way! #masterychat
Q3 #growthmindset mindset is realizing you make take longer to get there, but you are on the journey and willing to stick it out. A #fixedmindset tells the person that no matter what you do, you are stuck--to the positive or the negative. #MasteryChat
It's important to know what someone's mindset is in order to handle their feelings toward learning. It is difficult to convince someone with a #fixedmindset to try new things.#MasteryChat
A4: Was laidoff and couldn’t find work. Felt defeated. Decided to go back to school and do what I had always wanted to do — become a teacher. Now working on a MA in #EdLeadership. I didn’t stay defeated, I got back up and went for what I wanted! #masterychat
A4: I am a reserved person and I used to always say I couldn't talk in front of large groups of people. Now I am presenting for conferences and putting myself out there to grow in this area and become comfortable. I still get incredibly nervous, but I'm growing! #masterychat
A4: My first teaching days I was pretty fixed, I knew it all and that was all there was to it. I have developed more in the last 7 months than I did years previous. Also Brent from Magrath. Hi everyone! #masterychat.
A4 Professional: I went back to finish college later in life. I was overwhelmed in my 30's, mom of 4, working full-time and school full-time and thought NO WAY! It took leaning on my family and cohort to help me shine through to my Bachelor's then Master's. #MasteryChat
A4 I developed a fixed mindset when all my schoolwork growing up was too easy. Once I actually took a class that was challenging, I crumpled and lost all confidence. Took a lot of coaching and long, emotional conversations with my fabulous parents to get me through #masterychat
A4: I had a fixed mindset early in my career as a teacher. My view of what others had to teach me about my work was dim and it caused me to plateau. I over came my ego. I started to give of myself and openly receive from others. I developed trust. #MasteryChat
I’ve noticed how some Ss struggle with perfectionism & how harmful that can be to long term growth & learning for them. So much depends on our relationships w/ students! #Masterychat
awesome. I taught an inservice class on it in the fall, and will be repeating it again in the summer. Gotta spread the message and get more on board #masterychat
A4: Going in to work on my masters thesis was stressful. I had the words from my 11th grade English teacher in my head. (Apparently I was a terrible writer). After that paper, I continued on (eventually) to complete my doctoral dissertation this fall. #masterychat
A3 Persons with #Growthmindset seek to learn how they can apply experiences to next steps. #Fixedmindset views failures as a permanent ends. Identifying the type of mindset individuals have helps us structure our coaching & support approaches to help create progress #MasteryChat
A4- pretty much anytime I have never fixed something around the house...after my putting it off or freaking out, I watch something on YouTube and feel like I can do it on my own. I'm also a bit of an autodidact, so it's a fun challenge. #Masterychat
A4. Joining late. I hate a bobbin on a sewing machine and just refused to sew. One day about 3 years ago, I decided I could conjure the bobbin. 3 years and > 15 quilts later, I learned I just needed practice! #masterychat
A4: For years I didn’t think it was possible to fully differentiate my classroom to meet the needs of all the unique minds in my class. I had to take a risk and redesign my classroom around blended, self-paced and mastery-based learning to believe it #masterychat
My wife always challenges me to be the better version of myself and often I am obstinate about it. Being better through failure is hard but it can have the longest lasting, most meaningful changes in a person's life. Students should have this opportunity as well. #masterychat
A3 growth mindsets continually looks to improve and grow. Fixed mindset are more stagnant and set in their ways. When presented with a difficult task a person with a growth mindset looks at it as “challenge accepted” and a fixed mindset will focus on how hard it is #masterychat
I am with you. I can't say one can't because I will certainly make an attempt..but as you say, it is a quality that is ideally representative in all of us! #masterychat
A4 fixed mindset that twitter and blogging wouldn’t make me a better educator...with a little push I jumped in and boy was I wrong!! I wish I would’ve taken the leap a long time ago! #MasteryChat
A4 ~ Several years ago I began running, with the goal of running a 5K. I was not an athlete growing up and walked the mile in HS:)! Using the app C25K, I trained for several months and completed a 5K. Although it took a while, I kept at it. Still running today #masterychat
Many examples in my life when a fixed mindset kept me from reaching my potential. We need to dispel the myth that we either have a fixed or a growth mindset. It is not a personality characteristic but rather a way of responding when faced with a challenge #MasteryChat
Yeah, I would say a fuller embrace of growth mindset wasn't adopted until I was an adult. But here and there in my schooling I dabbled in the growth mindset arts. #masterychat
So true! We have all been there- a fact which can help us when we notice our students in that mode. Sharing our own stories of struggle can be powerful for them. They get to see us as imperfect and every growing! #masterychat
& This brings up a good point. I think we need to set realistic goals. I took voice lessons & got the mechanics down, but I don't have a voice anyone wants to listen to. I can do something else that will be more productive. #MasteryChat
A3 We need to be aware of gifted & talented Ss who may fall through the cracks because they "get it". I did a report in college about how (sometimes) those G/T Ss are more at risk than our low level learners. Let's connect with ALL students, always! #masterychat
A4: Being in #sales I am required to make calls to prospects who are strangers and these cold calls can be very nerve wrecking. Alternate is to stay in my comfort zone ...so I just did it and being damn good at it lol @melanie_korach@thegridmethod#masterychat#starfishclub
A4: I am introverted, so the fact that I am leading Twitter chats and speaking about the impact Twitter has made amazes me. I used to have a fixed mindset of the fact that I am young and cant make much of a difference, but that has changed because of Twitter. #masterychat
#masterychat Q4 Honestly, I had my most "fixed" mindset with my understanding of Twitter. I thought of it as just a risky social media outlet. Once I opened my mind to it, I realized how much continued learning, growth and diverse collaboration it could offer. Like this chat💜
A4 Still have a fixed mindset about some things. One was doing Lunch n Learns. I felt I don't know anything that someone would want to learn from me. I have hosted a couple the last year, risk taking 😬 #masterychat
A4: Best example is when providing discipline for students. High expectations. Wouldn't budge in the way I responded to expectations not being met. My approach is now more aligned with the situation/student not an overall fixed way of action. #masterychat
A4: Learning Fortran- I thought I would never learn it. Now I realize I struggled to make a connection to WHY I needed to learn it. It is important for educators to remember that the WHY that is meaningful to the student is important, not just for the test. #masterychat
A4: I started my principal licensure & have not finished due to the main instructor who was stuck and made me get stuck. I realize know that I am capable & a strong leader. Even w/out the degree. #MasteryChat
A1- My definition includes perseverance and hard work. It should be something visual and obvious to an onlooker that you have a growth mindset #MasteryChat
Q1- The concept of growth mindset was developed by Carol Dwek and outlined in her book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. What is your personal definition of growth mindset? #MasteryChat@thegridmethod#StarfishClub

A4: actually had a fixed until 10th grade when I had a life threatening wake up call and it changed me into a growth mindset which was pretty powerful. Literally went from D’s to A’s. #masterychat
A3: Fixed mindset focuses on end results and whether they reached that point. They don’t appreciate the learning that comes with the process of working towards the goal. Growth mindset is not linear. It learns from the process of working towards a goal. #masterychat
Drawing...I was what I considered average but always drew the same things because I could. I had to take an art class in HS. It was based on effort and growth. So I had to get out of my comfort zone and try different things. Was recommend for the drawing 2 class. #MasteryChat
Me Too. I have a Twitter account bc I had to create one for my @edtechteam Teacher Leader cohort last summer. I had many reservations...Now It's my go-to for PLN! #masterychat
A4: I am introverted, so the fact that I am leading Twitter chats and speaking about the impact Twitter has made amazes me. I used to have a fixed mindset of the fact that I am young and cant make much of a difference, but that has changed because of Twitter. #masterychat
A4 I have never been very good at fractions. I still catch myself saying "I can't do fractions" when I am helping my SH kids doing math. I say out loud to them, oops there's my fixed mindset. I can do fractions, it is just harder for me. #masterychat
So inspired by all of you. You are all rockstars and make such a difference on a daily basis. I aspire to be an incredible teacher just like all of you. #masterychat

A4: I swore I could program my own weight lifting plan. I was too blind iny own errors ( form and planning) to see the fatal mistakes I was making. It was only when I got coached did it become clear and progress started going.
#MasteryChat
A4 ~ Several years ago I began running, with the goal of running a 5K. I was not an athlete growing up and walked the mile in HS:)! Using the app C25K, I trained for several months and completed a 5K. Although it took a while, I kept at it. Still running today #masterychat
A3: growth mindset is the power of YET and taking so many roads to accomplish task- fixed is only taking one road and when it’s closed you quit
#masterychat
A4 Personal Going through chemo and 1 day was extremely hard. I wanted to just quit. On my knees crying, I moved up to the rocking chair, crossed my legs, and began to meditate like never before. It got me through and still does on tough days. Eye opening day #WeCan#MasteryChat
A5: I learned to give myself pep talks. I started hanging around people who were uplifting and positive. People who can push me past my limits and then I return those favorts to them. #MasteryChat
Q5- Many educators have implemented Dwek's theories in guiding how they teach students. How do u build a #growthmindset & what strategies have u used to help individuals move from a #fixedmindset to a #growthmindset once habits are established? #MasteryChat@thegridmethod
A2- It’s important because those without it get stuck in a rut, in their own heads. I see students struggle daily with the “I can’ts”. We need to bring more examples of failures that turn into successes! #MasteryChat
A3.Our pupils forget most of what we teach them. They will however remember us their teachers forever.Lets be good and kind to them.A kind word can last a lifetime #masterychat
A4. College course, fixed mindset, bad experience, hated subject. Had a professor who took the time to sit down and work with me a little bit. Did well in class! #masterychat
A5 I strongly believe that a Fixed Mindset needs to be UNlearned. We must change the script of our students that tell them they "can't" and they are as good as they will ever be. #masterychat
Q5- Many educators have implemented Dwek's theories in guiding how they teach students. How do u build a #growthmindset & what strategies have u used to help individuals move from a #fixedmindset to a #growthmindset once habits are established? #MasteryChat@thegridmethod
A5: I feel like I downplay grades and if a student gets a bad grade I remind them that if they want to go back and apply feedback or try again that they are more than welcome to it. Have had lots of students make use of that policy. Saw one student go from 50%-97%! #masterychat
Q3 #growthmindset mindset is realizing you make take longer to get there, but you are on the journey and willing to stick it out. A #fixedmindset tells the person that no matter what you do, you are stuck--to the positive or the negative. #MasteryChat

A5 Tons of feedback and formative assessment. Lots and lots of practice. Tons of trust and low pressure tasks to build trust. Ss are totally willing to try when they are comfortable and know you have their backs #masterychat
A5 - Implementing @thegridmethod has drastically helped me and so many others embody this mindset in their classrooms. Focusing on mastery inherently builds a focus on progress rather than completion of tasks and or the static outcome / grade. #masterychat#growthmindset
Why thank you Ty, the celeb. Ha! Appreciate it man. It feels better too. I think I have less gray trying to interrupt the black hairs on my head and face. lol #masterychat
A5: Students will not employ the growth mindset until they believe it works. When we scaffold assignments well and provide students ample time to learn skills they realize that growth is possible and that their skills are not fixed #masterychat
we've discussed fixed/growth mindsets, read stories about it and discussed things we can't do yet but will work to. MOST IMPORTANT- being open about times you failed and moved forward! #masterychat
A5 - Support, support and support. Give students the challenge and a safety net that has you cheering for them at the side. I just did a large scale poetry slam with my school and almost blew out my throat cheering for students and that is great for growth mindset. #masterychat
Q4: As a lifelong learner, I love to think I have always been open to learning something new. Changed careers at 40. Sometimes think I people assume I am fixed mindset because of my age. Love to surprise others with my capacity to change. #masterychat

A2) Mistakes and failures are part of life. The most amazing people hit failure over and over again but remained determined. Students need to be willing to try, make mistakes, learn from them to support their learning and their life. #MasteryChat
A4a I also thought I was horrible at math. I struggled through algebra in MS. When I went to HS, I selected the lower science class bc it had less math. When I got to college my math strategies classes taught the underlying concepts and contexts. #masterychat
A4. I would say speaking out:-0. Fear of all eyes on me👀👀👀👀
Oh, I like to talk but teach a class participate in twitter chat- no way but now, addicted to chats and learning from others Also plan on teaching at my professional learning day 2 sessions next month;) #masterychat
#masterychat I love a growth mindset! I hope that I model it with my students by continuing to embrace learning. Teach students that it’s not about the grade by allowing mastery!
A5 If you want your Ss to have a growth mindset, you can't just say "Try harder" they have to have the right tools. We have to provide them with the right kind of practice and help build capacity. #masterychat
A5 I actually read a REALLy interesting article on this the other day that talked about avoiding praising effort & instead praising the strategies- like choosing to make flashcards to study or asking a peer for help when it is needed. I'll try and find that article.. #masterychat
a4: I emind myself that whatever I may be doing right there's always a better way of doing it.. in class pupils or professionals hold the key to change anything within the framework if it saves us time & energy to get there #growthmindset? #MasteryChat#StarfishClub
I switched to #sbl and redo/retakes this year and Ss love it. They realize they have a second (or third or fourth...) chance to learn content and show they know it. It has made learning subsequent material much smoother. #MasteryChat
Q5- Many educators have implemented Dwek's theories in guiding how they teach students. How do u build a #growthmindset & what strategies have u used to help individuals move from a #fixedmindset to a #growthmindset once habits are established? #MasteryChat@thegridmethod
A5- To build a #growthmindset we go on a class journey together & dialogue daily about using the #PowerOfYet to keep us on the road to success. I say 'us' as I share my own growth & #failforward with them. I give lots of feedback & #celebrate where we are at NOW! #MasteryChat
A5: I teach my students the power of yet, and I actually did an Honors contract about growth mindset where I created a livebinder. The link is below in case you are interested.
https://t.co/sOgaHTlL2G#masterychat
A5: I have a heck of a time with teaching growth mindset, I think it is real but I also think there is a bit of a hippie vibe to it and not sure how to get the kids onboard aside from just talking talking talking. #MasteryChat
Q5- Many educators have implemented Dwek's theories in guiding how they teach students. How do u build a #growthmindset & what strategies have u used to help individuals move from a #fixedmindset to a #growthmindset once habits are established? #MasteryChat@thegridmethod
A5 About 2 weeks ago, a student failed an assignment. I noticed that she gave up on her strategy after 1 try. We talked as I retaught. I gave her the assignment a few days later and she aced it. She was so excited! Since then, she has really pushed herself. #MasteryChat
A4 I was told when I was in 3rd grade that I was bad at math because I was having trouble understanding concepts and that stuck with me until I was an adult. Sometimes we forgot that we can foster fixed mindsets if we are not careful #masterychat
A3- it should be visibly obvious that someone has a growth mindset. I think it’s important to show a student in the moment when they are having a fixed mindset. “Hey, I’m noticing you’re getting stuck and are giving up. How can we turn this attitude around?” #masterychat
A5: I think talking about #growthmindset everyday and modeling it are extremely powerful. I told my students that my goal this year is to be brave and not be afraid of taking risks and failing. I think I've done well so far, and they can see I am trying new things! #masterychat
I love when things like that occur man. Transformative classroom experiences not just for students but ourselves in the way we approach things. Kudos to you for growing man! #masterychat
A5: This year I dressed up as an astronaut on my first day of school and told my ss they could be anything they wanted to be. In 7th grade I had a teacher tell me I'd never be an astronaut and I believed her. So...I changed that this year. #masteryChat
A5- I have had a poster up for years that says "if you're not making mistakes, you're probably not learning." I correct my students when they say sorry for getting an answer wrong - you shouldn't be sorry, you're learning! #masterychat
A5: This year I used a lot of @joboaler videos on #growthmindset with my students. I now see my students self-assessing, asking others for help, and are motivated to practice- without any grades! #masterychat
a5 My Ss & I practice waving our hand to represent blowing off something they need to learn. Then we talk about "reaching" for learning. That's imp for quality hw practice. #masterychat
A5 Students need to understand that learning is physical change that takes place in the brain. Showing them how their brains form new connections when we struggle and try new strategies is key. https://t.co/2O1KaxpYdL#masterychat
Q5- Many educators have implemented Dwek's theories in guiding how they teach students. How do u build a #growthmindset & what strategies have u used to help individuals move from a #fixedmindset to a #growthmindset once habits are established? #MasteryChat@thegridmethod
A5: 2nd grade who wanted everything to come easy right away. Have spent the last yr helping her see mistakes are growth and she has been the first to apply her learning to her work independently!#MasteryChat
A5 One of the best ways to help an individual transition from #Fixedmindset to #Growthmindset is to help them be purposeful about celebrating small wins. This builds momentum, helps them see their own growth, & creates excitement to reach new levels #MasteryChat
Q5- Many educators have implemented Dwek's theories in guiding how they teach students. How do u build a #growthmindset & what strategies have u used to help individuals move from a #fixedmindset to a #growthmindset once habits are established? #MasteryChat@thegridmethod
A5: this is harder said than done. Interested to see what everyone has to share. I have one student who is very fixed and I just continue to push her from failure to success and she still has a ways to go. #masterychat
A5: Never make assumptions about learners, avoid “one sized fits all” lesson design, pitch “day-to-day” maps, provide pragmatic hope with a merciful disposition, embrace & communicate progress over points (eg healthy grading practices), etc. #masterychat#sblchat

A5: It is important to give Ss opportunities to change their answers or see how their understanding of a concept changes over time. For example, having Ss revisit an open-ended pre-assessment as they learn the concept where Ss can add to or change their thinking. #masterychat
A5 As a young T, I find that I connect w/ my high school Ss very well so I focus on modeling that growth mindset for them. I share a lot with them about my own life, I let my walls down, and we share in our mutual growth together! I'm vulnerable & they appreciate it #masterychat
A4: I want to be perfect at everything. I joined Twitter and realized how far I have to go and that I will never be perfect. But I can be better than I was last year or yesterday. I started a blog by reflecting on my teaching evolution. Gave me a growth mindset. #masterychat
Ah, yes. I have found age has improved my ability to try and try. I am more patient with myself #masterychat. And I have the years of experience in knowing the value of practice.

Right now I am in "get through the school year" mode and focusing on getting a few walks in a week. Come summer, it's go time! I'll take you up on that offer in a couple months! #masterychat
A5: I feel like I downplay grades and if a student gets a bad grade I remind them that if they want to go back and apply feedback or try again that they are more than welcome to it. Have had lots of students make use of that policy. Saw one student go from 50%-97%! #masterychat
And look at how many people you inspire every day Melanie as you grow into a new awareness and realm of possibility! #MasteryChat I share my writing in my classes as well, it’s out there for anyone to read and I encourage students to be that open too.

A3- I was tired with my case of “I can’ts” with my fitness goals. So I set a goal to run at least a mile every day of 2012 & I accomplished it!! I turned around and did it again in 2014 and 2016. #365running#MasteryChat
A5: This year I dressed up as an astronaut on my first day of school and told my ss they could be anything they wanted to be. In 7th grade I had a teacher tell me I'd never be an astronaut and I believed her. So...I changed that this year. #masteryChat
A5: Words and actions are so powerful. We say the word YET in our classroom. We also help each other, have our own handshakes, and don't let distractions get in the way. #MasteryChat
A5.b If you are encourage Ss to make mistakes, you can't grade and penalize them for mistakes when they are practicing their learning. Only grade when they have had time to master the content, and allow redos. #masterychat
As a student teacher, I have doubted in my abilities, but I try to cultivate a growth mindset because, if I am not modeling that, how will my students?#masterychat
A5: I have taught & continue to teach #growthmindset to my students. Lots of coaxing and convincing that there is power in their error and it's all learning at the end of the day. So interesting to hear them embrace it even among themselves. They believe in learning! #masterychat
A5. Ss will not apply a growth mindset until they first start believing in themselves! They need to know that you believe in them! Once Ss have time to learn skills and practice, they gain confidence, and begin to realize that the growth midset is possible! #masterychat
Yes! I have told my students many times that their brains are "muscles" that need to be trained! Comparing it to physical exercise helps with some students #masterychat

A5: important to watch we speak to students as saying things like “I was never meant to teach chemistry” sends a fixed mind set signal so better to imply that chemistry too can be learned ...no sweat!!! @melanie_korach@thegridmethod#masterychat#starfishclub
Seeing this image reinforces my belief that many high achieving and high ability students (the population I work with) struggle significantly with a fixed mindset. They simply do not know how to function when they are being appropriately challenged! #masterychat
A5: Since I teach elementary students, I plaster my walls & hallways with positive growth mindset posters! I also provide learning opportunities for my students to work collaboratively. We also encourage each other with shout-outs and goal-setting. #MasteryChat
Q5: Teaching both Ss and Ts to figure stuff out and find solutions. I don't provide the "answer" but rather offer options. Use Ss and/or colleagues as experts. If we are open to learning, we can find always find the way to get there. #masterychat
A5: I’ve shifted to a readers-writers workshop to better scaffold Ss writing and increase independent reading; my HS ELA Ss are seeing themselves more as readers now! #growthmindset

A5: Recognize where you were, where you are, and where you want to go. Make a plan to get there. Find a way to measure progress. Set big steps and little steps along the way. Be aware of what else you are learning in the process of working towards your goal. #masterychat
This chat uplifted me in many ways. Here I am worried about my future due to having peers that have already accepted offers or have interviews lined up while I am actively searching. Because of this chat, I know that things will fall into place. #masterychat

This is a fantastic book! I used this as the basis for a class I taught over in Hungary a few years ago w/ English-learning teens; they loved it! #masterychat
A5: I did a month long unit on Growth Mindset. After we finished, I challenged my Ss to teach the rest of the school about Growth Mindset. We learned about the brain, did challenges, learned about famous failures, did an escape room, then they created the boards. #masterychat
A3) fixed mindset is believing that if you can’t get it you never will. Growth mindset is the belief that I don’t get it yet but I can take steps to change that. You have to understand both and teach Ss both so they can help recognize their feelings. #MasteryChat
A6 - ALWAYS focus on solutions and NEVER accept excuses when working collaboratively. Keep the conversations positive. Worry about putting fires OUT not who / what started them. #masterychat
A5: I feel like I downplay grades and if a student gets a bad grade I remind them that if they want to go back and apply feedback or try again that they are more than welcome to it. Have had lots of students make use of that policy. Saw one student go from 50%-97%! #masterychat
There is a really cool Khan Academy video that makes that analogy. They have a whole series of videos/activities on growth mindset! #masterychathttps://t.co/HjCNff3imd
I like your thinking. Principals also have to allow teachers to practice their learning, implement new strategies, take risks. It changes the culture of the whole campus. #masterychat
A5.b If you are encourage Ss to make mistakes, you can't grade and penalize them for mistakes when they are practicing their learning. Only grade when they have had time to master the content, and allow redos. #masterychat
A6: @misskoplin, @ToddRisser, and I talk regularly. I feel like our conversations help the three of us perpetually learn and grow from each other. So thankful for our friendship! #masterychat
A5. Stop grading practice/classwork. This is their time to make mistakes with the content and learn from it. Present them with a challenge and help them reach the expectations through feedback, not points. #MasteryChat
A5 With 1st grade it is important to model moving on from a mistake. I tell my Ss we can always make something better or try a different way to solve a problem. #masterychat
A6: I think talk talk talk applies here as well. Talking to staff about new things and giving them a chance to help with the expertise they have builds that idea of growing together. #MasteryChat
A6: Most people want to be around winners and people that are going places:) They don’t want to be left behind. We lead by example and many will follow. #masterychat#UMedTech
A6 Teachers need to believe that they can do anything and that they can move forward and transform. As colleagues, friends, we need to stand with them and support them; help them do what it takes. We need to believe in students and adults alike. #MasteryChat
A6 We often serve as the conduits for our Ss so we must always make sure that we as educators & primed/up to date to provide meaningful instruction for them! We can focus on encouraging one another & finding mentor/mentee relationships that foster growth! #masterychat
A math teacher called upon me to answer a question I didn’t know the answer to. Then told me advanced math was too hard & not to continue. Not only did I continue but I got an A with the help of a different teacher who said I could do math, so I did! #MasteryChat
A6 Helping colleagues get to a growth mindset can be much more difficult than getting students there. It takes equal parts patience, persistence, and calling out fixed mindsets (kindly) when you see them. #masterychat
A6: Our colleagues need to embrace innovation and failure. As students change and the economy progresses teachers need to feel comfortable and confident enough to adjust their pedagogy to meet all learners need #masterychat
Being an example. I write grants, I travel, I try to be engaged and it rubbing off on my colleagues. One of them just got her first teacher travel grant this week due to my help and influence. It was a great moment for me to see her be able to see herself doing more #masterychat
A5. I tell kids that there is a big jump from I can’t to I can but ask them to meet me at I’ll try. I remind them that Rome wasn’t built in a day and that it will take baby steps to get where they need to be. Goal set and celebrate all the small achievements as well #MasteryChat
I think filming yourself Teach is one of the most humbling, but effective ways to build growth mindset. I worked with a teacher who went from struggling to a boss from 1st to 2nd year. I showed her a montage of her teaching in the 1st vs 2nd, so powerful #masterychat
A6 - We can help colleagues develop a #growthmindset through support, encouragement, sharing resources, & partnering together to take more risks. A support network where mistakes & risk-taking are embraced are essential to move all learners forward. #MasteryChat#StarfishClub
A5- honestly I ought to be more intentional. But I think the biggest thing I do is model it. Show them that I’m human, I make mistakes and I shake it off and move on quickly or model learning from my mistake. Builds relationships & growth mindset! #masterychat
Q5- Many educators have implemented Dwek's theories in guiding how they teach students. How do u build a #growthmindset & what strategies have u used to help individuals move from a #fixedmindset to a #growthmindset once habits are established? #MasteryChat@thegridmethod
We did a 5 minute challenge in our high school. Staff chose something they wanted to learn, then 5 minutes a day they practiced it in front of students, video taped their practice, and we showed the videos at staff meetings. Modeling productive struggle for students!#MasteryChat
A5) I think a lot of it is just trusting a student and supporting them. Being the cheerleader a Ss needs can make all the difference and allowing them to see their growth, be apart of goal setting, and celebrating their progress is important #MasteryChat
I embed a bit of learning science so my Ss understand how to learn efficiently. They didn't realize a phone that is constantly buzzing in their pocket can interfere w/their ability to think deeply or that fast processors aren't "smarter" than slow. #masterychat
A6 I taught an inservice class on the power of mindsets. My focus was that small changes in approach can have a big impact of Ss. It doesn't have to be a big shift all at once. #masterychat
A6: Share your mindset. Don't be afraid of the alien look you'll get. Then keep doing what you do and people will want to join! I've seen it first hand this year. #MasteryChat
The slow diffusion method of spreading change can be incredibly powerful! That is how we do it with @thegridmethod when we work on whole school implementation. Start with some teachers ready to innovate, then watch as that innovation spreads! #masterychat
To avoid obsolescence, I try to encourage talented Ts stuck in fixed-mindset to expand their horizons. I share, share, share. Post lots of stuff on @TsGiveTs to help those who want to try new stuff, but are intimidated by the process, explore other options . #masterychat
A6- try to keep an open mind about HOW we say things can be perceived differently to Ss. Make an effort to talk about strengths and weaknesses, instead what we 'can' and 'can't' do. #Masterychat
A couple examples: (1) Eliminate the punitive nature of including habits when assessing academic understanding — in other words, don’t lower grade because it’s late, and (2) Differentiate learning from performance when it comes to grading. #masterychat#sblchat
A5. With some Ss, It,'s beginning to get them to believe in themselves and say, " I can do it". Sometimes it's getting them to overcome a bad experience as to why they dislike something, too. Listening to them. Encourage them and let them know you bel. in them. #masterychat
Also, on the teacher side. It's been a bit of struggle for teachers to integrate tech in a meaningful way in the classroom. I try to be an example for them and share what I can to show what is possible. #MasteryChat
A6- Bring growth mindset into your PLCs. While planning discuss for challenges students will face and how we can encourage and support them #masterychat
A6: I strive to remain positive. I also share my ideas and offer help to anyone who might feel frustrated. I try to keep an open door policy for colleagues so they know I am always there to help, if needed. #masterychat
A6: Being biased here but truly have the Starfish mindset of helping, kindness, being supportive and encourage colleagues to adapt CAN DO attitude. One starfish at a time. @melanie_korach@thegridmethod#masterychat#starfishclub
A6: I think reflection is where it starts. If I can encourage them to think about something that didn't go well, but then identify something that did, the train just pulled from the station. #masterychat
A6: model it and share the results. Nothing changes fixed mindset like results. However, nothing is possible if you haven't built that relationship with your colleagues. Take the time to lay the ground work.
#MasteryChat
A6.I am willing to sit through their hesitations. I also try very very hard not to do the work myself, but sit by the side and guide them through. #masterychat
A6: Growth mindset is cultivated in an environment where risk taking is valued. It is in a culture built on trust and mutual respect. This is true for students, teachers and leadership. How I support is by providing that environment. #masterychat
A6: I think reflection is where it starts. If I can encourage them to think about something that didn't go well, but then identify something that did, the train just pulled from the station. #masterychat
A growth mindset gives you the courage to do things like video taping! Once we unlock our beliefs, it is amazing what we will/can do in order to grow. #masterychat
I think filming yourself Teach is one of the most humbling, but effective ways to build growth mindset. I worked with a teacher who went from struggling to a boss from 1st to 2nd year. I showed her a montage of her teaching in the 1st vs 2nd, so powerful #masterychat
A6: Be a supporter, listener, and encourager. Share your experiences. Don't push them, but be there when they are ready to take risks and fail forward. #masterychat
It's definitely different working on this aspect of education w/ colleagues, especially for me since most of them are old enough to my parents! (shh!) But in all seriousness, it takes a tactful approach & a willingness to listen & learn #masterychat
A6 We can help through supporting them through challenges and cheering them on, help them look for and implement solutions, and just like with our Ss, we can model it on our own challenges. #MasteryChat
A6) Similar to Ss, teachers need to feel supported to try something new and feel the support of others to try new tools or be apart of a group that challenges them in a positive way. #MasteryChat
A6: Modeling the practices in the classroom, showing how Ss are progressing and succeeding with new policies helps! For Ts, its about asking questions that lead to a solution, not always complaining about the problem (guilty!) #masterychat
I also assign individualized sessions based on what I see them blowing off on their hw or missing on a test. Khan's interface is complicated but only bc it is so powerful #masterychat

A5. We practice growth mindset daily! Beginning of year did hula hoop activity;). We also have stem where things don’t always turn out the way we want them too;). We grin and keep moving! Enjoy the journey! #masterychat
A5: celebrate their strengths by listening and making them feel candidly valued.. I don't think twice to advance the idea that a colleague should start writing what she/he just had the kindness to share w/ me #growthmindset? #MasteryChat@thegridmethod#StarfishClub .....
A6 as an educator there will definitely be days where you are defeated but Ss deserve a teacher who will come back the next day ready to make a difference! #masterychat
A6: Team planning and collaboration among other teachers. It takes time to get everyone on board. Making it relevant and explaining the why. #MasteryChat
A5. Create an environment where questioning and playing with ideas is expected and celebrated rather than viewed with suspicion. If Ts view their work as a process, maybe Ss will too. #masterychat
✨A6: DON'T HIDE! Share your goals, new things your trying, and the challenges you're undertaking with each other. Support, cheer, and celebrate!✨ #MasteryChat
A6 ts need growth mindsets to counter balance unintentional biased. We need to believe and foster the idea that all children can learn and will learn. In my mind ts with fixed mindsets about kids or learning do not belong in the classroom #MasteryChat
I see this as continuing to stay in the same patterns of instruction. Sometimes all it takes is a suggestion and something gets tried (like using models or a book to read) and then there is forward movement. #MasteryChat
A6 as an educator there will definitely be days where you are defeated but Ss deserve a teacher who will come back the next day ready to make a difference! #masterychat
I distinctly remember my Spanish 4 teacher my senior year in high school have a rough few days w/ some stuff going on in her life but she never once let it impact her teaching in a negative way. We all knew what was going on but admired her commitment to us! #masterychat
A7 Leaders who empower need to believe in the power of learning. Schools and organizations need to believe that all kids can learn when they have their learning personalized. We need to challenge the status quo, shake things up; We need to do what it takes. #MasteryChat
A7 - Fostering a #growthmindset and solution focused culture in any school or district is imperative to a good leader. Modeling and curating positive discussions around this framework and mindset can truly increase how staff responds to adversity #masterychat.
A7 leaders know making mistakes means they took a risk to make a difference- leaders need to have the mindset that wherever you are you can always be better #masterychat
A1 What is your definition of growth mindset? #masterychat Believing that you can show progress in understanding any concept if you put forth the effort. #ProductiveStruggle (not just struggle) is a key factor, in my belief!
A6. For colleagues, sometimes small steps into change work well. Celebrate each others strengths and enc. each other, share ideas, ccollaborate. #masterychat
We discuss how & why deadlines are used, and I consistently ask for their work. In short, I don’t have a culture of “letting them off the hook”. It’s due when it’s done. #masterychat
..... a5: it may sound 'outlandish' at times but that's alright.
bc it's important to be surrounded by strength oriented colleagues.. it's win/win/win to quote late Covey (Bless his soul) #growthmindset? #MasteryChat@thegridmethod#StarfishClub

Leaders have to be willing to take risks that might not pan out. They can learn from that and make adjustments for next time or try something new. Model the expectations for those you lead. #masterychat
A6. Sometimes we get stuck as Ts. We need to create safe spaces for Ts too. If Ts feel that they can take risks they will change their mindsets It is about culture. #masterychat
A6: Being biased here but truly have the Starfish mindset of helping, kindness, being supportive and encourage colleagues to adapt CAN DO attitude. One starfish at a time. @melanie_korach@thegridmethod#masterychat#starfishclub
A7 - Leaders often have to acknowledge failure as an option and the growth mindset doesn't just give leaders the leeway to failure but a structure to build from it. Teachers, leaders, admin, and students can all learn from it. #masterychat
The slow diffusion method of spreading change can be incredibly powerful! That is how we do it with @thegridmethod when we work on whole school implementation. Start with some teachers ready to innovate, then watch as that innovation spreads! #masterychat
All sectors not just education need help with this. We have a tendency to fundamentally attribute character (i.e. that’s a good teacher, that’s a bad teacher) but we need to focus on continually improving and growth. People are dynamic and Ts can lead this thinking #masterychat
A6) I have done pd sessions @WITconference & in my district to encourage current practices and uses for technology in order to promote change and make it seem more tangible for other teachers. I believe tech is scary for many teachers and doing things like this help #MasteryChat
A7 I focus on connecting my seniors (Personal Finance class) to leaders in the community so they can see/hear firsthand what it took them to become a leader in their field; they appreciate the hard work, the failures & growth it took. #masterychat
A7- The idea of #growthmindset can be used to develop leaders as it encourages people to consider the whole person & their attitude in deciding who is the best fit for an organization. Attitude should trump IQ, & great leaders embrace this on the leadership journey. #MasteryChat
A7: Leaders need to understand these belief systems (both sides) exist and understand how to support Ts to continue to learn and grow as educators, and help drive policies and practices to allow Ts to provide opportunities for #growthmindset for Ss. #masterychat
You’re welcome; I’m still figuring it out and many others do it better than me, but luckily we have a #growthmindset to continually improve #masterychat
A6. Being flexible, open to new things! We need to remember it’s all about our kids! I say we only have 1 life and I don’t want to waste it by complaining, not trying or even quitting instead enjoy the journey with your kids;). Lead by example #masterychat
A7: #growthmindset speaks to the very nature of lifelong learning. Leaders who stop learning limit their ability to be effective. We must continue if we are to not only be an example but be relevant. #masterychat
I made a unit with @thegridmethod all about growth mindset and using many of these resources. It is how I started my year off! Students got so much out of it! #masterychat
A7: We can all step up as leaders and model growth mindset for our peers and students while following others ideas. It's an ever-growing cycle. #MasteryChat
A7- LOVE this Q! An average leader begrudgingly continues w their work when they fail. A GREAT leader embraces their failure & learns from it! They motivate their team to persevere even when it’s tough. This created a well-oiled organization w a positive environment! #masterychat
A7. We want leaders to embrace the process of growth and understand the importance of trying (and failing) so that Ts and Ss are motivated to move forward. Need to avoid the idea that success is something that you arrain and you’re done. #masterychat
I love the idea of adapt or get left behind and this follows the same thread. Leaders have to see how their adaptations or evolutions can change their world. #masterychat
A2: Model that making mistakes is not a big deal. Try new things. Sometimes things don't work despite best intentions. Always ask for feedback, keep what works, dump what doesn't. Isn't that how stuff gets done in the real 🌏? Shouldn't class reflect that mindset? #masterychat
A7 It is definitely all about the culture. When Ts are empowered to make choices and respected for their expertise they will step up and lead. Ts need to feel like they are more than a number. For most of us it is a calling #masterychat
A7 The culture of the building, the school systems in place, the mindsets of the leaders, all have to be growth mindset oriented in order have maximum impact. I'd like to start something like the start something like this in my district https://t.co/EUPwxrX4Ob#masterychat
I think that tech can be so intimidating for Ts. I am a hardcore techie (hence, my Twitter handle), but I understand that everyone is in different places in their comfort level. I find more often than not it is primarily a confidence issue for many of the Ts I coach! #masterychat
A7: To be a leader, you have to be okay with failing. I do not view myself as a leader, but I do hope I set a positive example. My journey has consisted of hard work and tears, but I am so close to living out my dream which is being a teacher. #masterychat
Thank you so much to everyone for joining in tonight’s #MasteryChat with me. Words can’t express how honoured I was to host this evening for the first time. It truly was fitting to host on #growthmindset as it is a new adventure for me on my learning journey! ♥️#StarfishClub
A7: Excellent leaders take risks, learn through failures, demonstrate grit, resilience, and perseverance. They also work collaboratively with their team toward a common goal. These are all characteristics of a Growth Mindset. #masterychat
This is so important to support one another. In schools where Ts feel like Admin is out to get them or that they must compete with colleagues, how can we possibly expect Ss to develop a #growthmindset? School culture must be invested in growth/learning
#masterychat
Oh my Gosh...Totally! That's what I was thinking last year when I received 1:1 chromebooks. I either needed to accept it and learn how to incorporate them (in a meaningful way) - or just say forget it and not support the needs of my students. #masterychat
A7) Leaders need to be open to teachers trying new things for students. They need to support the creative endeavors of their staff and be able to accept if those endeavors don’t always follow the norm #MasteryChat
Not these teachers. They are well versed in my super excited tech enthusiasm. Sometimes, they do smile at me and giggle when I go off on a tech tangent.
"There she goes again..."

What a fabulous job by @melanie_korach on Growth Mindset. A stellar learning night. Thank you to everyone who helped us grow, learn and be better educators. You guys are amazing. Have a great long weekend. Relax, recharge, enjoy! #MasteryChat
