Matt checking in currently teaching civics and government, foundations of citizenship, and leadership seminar. Happy to be talking audio and podcasting with you all tonight! #sschat
My name is Greg Soden. I am an English, social studies, and career planning teacher in an online high school. I love my podcast and Turned Out a Punk by @leftfordamian. It's about rock n' roll music. #sschat
Chris from Bloomington, IN. Teach world history for private online HS & one of the #sschat co-leaders. Super excited for tonight's chat as I have a slight podcast addiction. NPR Politics podcast is one of my faves.
"If you look at the history of the decline of social studies in schools across the country, you will start noticing the rise of partisanship and the decrease in civic participation. The two are directly correlated." https://t.co/D646cw2lnq@icivics@matteroffacttv#CivXNow
Joanne From Missouri 7th grade world history and 11th grade modern global history. Love to listen to The Hidden Brain podcast. #sschathttps://t.co/MC48nJ76pK
Kristen here from MN! I teach 4th grade. I really haven't jumped on the podcast bandwagon yet. I'm curious to look through and see what others have recommended! #sschat
A1: Its one of my favorite ways to learn, it allows to me engage and visualize what I am hearing. I also use music to shut out the world and focus, being doing it since college and at work. #sschat
Good afternoon everyone! Joe Fuertsch, Director of Innovation & EdTech in Corona-Norco CA. One non-educational podcast I love in my hockey world is Spittin Chiclets. #sschat
Good to be here! I was also a 12th grade religious studies teacher in a public high school in Missouri for 5 years. That class was my pride and joy and the reason I have a podcast. #sschat

Hi, #sschat! I'm Katie from PA! I'm a 7th grade online geography teacher that has time to stay for a few questions tonight. Favorite educational podcast is NPR politics for SURE. For non-educational, The Black Tapes is my all-time favorite. It's spooky and awesome.
Hi! I’m Julie from WI and I teach middle school social studies. I really like the School of Greatness podcast by @LewisHowes about entrepreneurs. #sschat
Phil from Sarasota. Checking in from time to time, since it is also dinner time. Currently teaching 6th WH and 7th AH. I love the Stacking Benjamins podcast as well as The Way I Heard it by Mike Rowe. #sschat
A1: I have a really hard time processing information that is just given in an auditory format (Probably why I haven't jumped on the podcast bandwagon) I do really well, however, if it's auditory and written. #sschat
Hi all! My name is Ryan O'Donnell, teacher in Rocklin CA & I'll share 3. The Soundtrack Show
@SoundtrackHSW Fresh Air @nprfreshair & This Week in Google #sschat
Andrew (8th grade, Massachusetts) wondering if there are any other WTNV podcast listeners out there in #sschat?
Oh, and SlowBurn Season 1 was crazy good.
I am an auditory learner to an extreme degree. I listen to records. I listen to podcasts. I LOVE talk radio and longform interviews. When I read long novels, I use the audio book in headphones WHILE I am reading the physical book. I couldn't read a 600 p book w/o Audible #sschat
A1 I LOVE listening to music and teaching through it. We often annotate hip hop songs to discuss social issues. Listening to some Public Enemy tomorrow #sschathttps://t.co/wNlqIPhoxI
Hi all! Jessica, Social Studies Ed Specialist at ESC Region 12 in TX...the only podcasts I've listened to have been with friends...@TheArchiTechEd always finds great podcasts! #sschat
A1: I studied latin and ancient greek in college and would constantly chant conjugations for myself - I think I'm part auditory, part kinesthetic personally. #sschat
I agree... I am a junkie! Started with listening to old time radio in the car with my folks, then on to books on tape. Podcasting was just the next step #sschat
Hey there! My name is Patrick Ernst and I am a preservice teacher from Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio. One of my favorite podcasts to listen to is Fishing With Dynamite! - https://t.co/7pRgSyz4b4#sschat
A1: I am at my core a kinesthetic learner. However, podcasts are one of my go to's for sparking ideas. Then I'm diving into the hands on work. Sometimes I am listening to a certain section a few times to get the key points, same with audio books. #sschat
A2 #sschat I love Religion for Breakfast on YouTube, @VisionsOfEd, my teacher series on @Classical_Ideas (including @cchaynes3 from Religious Freedom Ctr and @Lindakwert, author of "Faith Ed"). I'm proud of some of the work I've managed to do.
In reply to

A1: even if I’m listening to something I have to be visualizing as well since I’m mostly visual...I need to pass this on to my students more now that I think about it #sschat
A1) I think I'm more of a visual learner but I do love the podcasts. I actually look forward to doing the dishes b/c it's podcast time. Well, I kind of look forward to doing the dishes. #sschat
Currently (in bits and pieces) listening to #SlowBurn by @Slate to get ready for future lessons over #Watergate in the Spring. Also interested in their Season 2 episodes over the Clinton Impeachment. #sschat
it is hard to retiain. that is an excellent point. many of us who listen a lot do it while we are engaged other ways, driving, working out, etc #sschat
A1: I am definitely a more visual learner than an auditory one. Unless it’s sports radio I zone when only listening. I need to tips to keep me focused!!!! #sschat
It's pretty amazing because it paces me through the book and I can't get stuck re-reading the same page over and over. My students constantly thank me for using audio because that happens to them too #sschat
A2: I’m probably supposed to plug @15MinuteHistory, but even at the college level I’ve really enjoyed @podhistory. It’s helped a lot putting together syllabi. #sschat
A1: I am very much an auditory learner. I was born with slight hearing loss in my left ear and was on an IEP throughout high school with my hearing aid, so I really had to train myself to listen carefully to what was being said by the teacher. #sschat
A2: A historical/ social study podcast I enjoy is by @mikeroweworks called "The Way I Heard It" It sparks curiosity and what better way to spark interest in people and history than to get a neat story or a different spin on something. #sschat
I can focus if I'm looking at the text at the same time. If it's just auditory I find myself tuning out and then not understanding what's going on. Gives me insight into students who can't focus during lecture style instruction #sschat

Fresh Air is actually what I've attempted to model my long-form interview style to resemble. I love Gross's interviews and she inspires me as I prepare my own interviews with authors, journalists, professors, and clergy #sschat

We don't post rough drafts of writing online. We help students, then post. Why then do we post rough drafts of podcasts? ALL students deserve help becoming effective speakers. #sschat
I’ve been told by a few people that I need to get into podcasting myself.... #sschat Rhinking about a series of author interviews, teaching about comics, etc. maybe a summer project
Currently (in bits and pieces) listening to #SlowBurn by @Slate to get ready for future lessons over #Watergate in the Spring. Also interested in their Season 2 episodes over the Clinton Impeachment. #sschat
Sorry #sschat dove right in while doing the shopping with one of the Gremlins - Amy Presley, OK HS T & part of the @TalkinSS team thanks to @creativeedtech for putting the group together!
A3: I don't have anything to contribute but wanted to say thank you for all the resources being shared...making me think about when I could make time to listen. Any suggestions? #sschat
A2 I will confess that @15MinuteHistory is one of my faves because of the transcripts & resources they include with each episode. #sschat What other podcasts include a transcript and resources for teachers?
Hey, #sschat! I'm late to the party! I teach high school Social Studies & am an #edtech adjunct instructor. Also, author of Illuminate: Technology Enhanced Learning! Also a HUGE @Outlander_STARZ fan! Most importantly - mommy to two daughters &nd wife to a pretty awesome husband!

Seeing some #sschat humans who may be new to listening to podcasts, something that may help for a “why”
1. Podcasts save time because you can listen while doing something else (driving, exercise, cleaning).
2. You can pause and rewind.
3. We are hardwired to listen to stories
A3) here are some of my non-social studies podcasts I love
Cult of Pedagogy
Modern Learners
John Spencer Creative Classroom
Teaching Keating
https://t.co/YPaiY5eFo9
and a shameless plus for my own! Check This Out! #sschat
A2.b I also enjoy seeing @khowaga complain about his dissertation on Twitter. Takes me back to the days when I was facing the blank page. #sschat@15MinuteHistory
A2: Mike Rowe's "The Way I Heard It" does a nice job or summarizing events in 10 to 12 minutes. He has a way of telling a story without giving away the event until the end of the podcast. #sschat
I know a lot of authors and illustrators already - awesome people in the comics industry. Just a matter of getting to know how to do it first. Thank you! #sschat

I'm Old with you Ryan. Yes, he does have that style that is relaxing and enjoyable. And by the way, I miss Paul Harvey's "The Rest of the Story" as well. Did anyone pick up where he left off? #sschat
A4: I’ve tried several and I’m back with the Apple Podcasts app. I liked Overcast but if I missed a few episodes I couldn’t find anything anymore. #sschat
Agree! We have a teacher in our Dept with a voice like that - he laughs, but even the kids admit he could make a chocolate chip recipe would like a thriller novel! #sschat
A4) For my show, I use ATR 2100 USB/XLR mics. I record on Skype and use ECamm Movie Tools as my call recorder. I mix and edit in Garage Band. Easy stuff. Amazon sells those mics as a kit as well, if anyone's looking for something cheap and reliable. #sschat
Very late to the chat, but I’m readingto catch up. I am Kim from Kentucky and work as a Social Studies instructional specialist. I’m excited to learn from all of you tonight. #sschat
If your students ever feel like doing podcasts or journalism, I would be happy to make my prep notes viewable with the link. It's a mind-boggling amount of work that I've PAID to do for the last 18 months. #sschat#podcasting

A5: I have my 12th grade religious studies students listen to several eps of @HistPhilosophy without any gaps. It is **THE BEST** source for the history of philosophy for thousands of years. The level of depth is astonishing. The ep on Jainism is my student's fave #sschat#ahimsa
A5) Stuff You Missed in History - - a few episodes like the one on the White Rose movement where college students worked against the Nazis https://t.co/477lHKhdhK#sschat
A5: I cannot tell a lie, I’ve assigned my own podcast in my class.
I also created a soundscape to play with a slideshow of a medieval Middle Eastern city for my Islamic origins class. Complete with competing calls to prayer!
#sschat
A5: I've also had tenth graders listen to ALL of the book Night, large portions of Othello, A Thousand Splendid Suns by @khaledhosseini, In 12th grade: The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid, and Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse #sschat
A5 Our ELA Ts have been using Serial with their students. I am going to ask my HS students to ID a podcast that they have listened to for valuable History content. #sschat#crowdsourcing
A5
I’ve used pieces of @UpFirst & the Daily from @nytimes in my global studies class. They’re great about covering stories from other parts of the world! #sschat
Its a bit of a challenge I've had differentiating between what I listen to what my Ss can handle. I want them to not hate the process so I have to hand pick episodes of shows to share with them. #sschat
That’s fine don’t stress! Something that I’ve come to realize with these chats as there are times to “talk” and many more times to listen, support, and ask questions. #sschat
I don't accept "Let them try it, we'll teach them later." It is cruel to make a kid get up and give a speech without teaching them how to do a speech. Equally cruel to make them record and post. #sschat
I don't for one minute believe that speaking is somehow innate and can't be taught. ALL kids can be better readers, math-ers, writers, AND speakers. The skills are teachable. #sschat
A5: And I routine record myself reading hard things and using them for reading the entirety of say, The Gospel of Mark. Here is me reading Gospel of Mark for 88 minutes: https://t.co/jwYa8MvTtz#sschat#religion
I have used audio tools like Audacity to trim and edit clips too. Helps me get clips of about 15 minutes or so which is what I've seen my Ss attention span last for #sschat
#sschat A2 running some errands, but definitely want to plug @dig_history for history, world and US. Episodes have transcripts which make it useful with students.
A5 I have my students listen to the original War of the Worlds broadcast. They highlight the terms in the script that made it believable and we discuss source credibility. No tech. All imagination. They love it. #sschat
A5 Our ELA Ts have been using Serial with their students. I am going to ask my HS students to ID a podcast that they have listened to for valuable History content. #sschat#crowdsourcing
It's super tough! When I record myself reading them, I FREQUENTLY stop the recording so I can look up how to say something. I can't say it's 100% perfect, but I definitely do my best. I read the abridge audio of the Odyssey....I think I made a couple mistakes. #sschat

I’ve had students listen to @60SecondCivics and when we have more time @CNN10@CarlAzuzCNN is very puny (although not a podcast Carl is really good at presenting current events from a nonpartisan viewpoint) #sschat
I'm going to try to use Audacity to string together my students' first person narratives on WWI. Here's some samples of Vietnam narratives from a few years back. #sschat
A6: I’ve done active listening exercises, asking students to document how they feel at different times (this really works well with audio or video—I like to do this in my modern class because the historical actors can speak for themselves.) #sschat
A6) When I use Peter Adamson's @HistPhilosophy episode on Ahimsa (non-violence) in Jainism, I made them write down whatever questions spring to mind for a goal of 3-5 in total. Then, as a table, they wrote group letters to Peter Adamson with questions they were pondering. #sschat
I’ve had students listen to @60SecondCivics and when we have more time @CNN10@CarlAzuzCNN is very puny (although not a podcast Carl is really good at presenting current events from a nonpartisan viewpoint) #sschat
A6
Honestly, sometimes it’s that simple. I’ve played pieces from NPR only to have Ss tell me that the projector is frozen. Many Ss haven’t grown up with audio only and need to practice listening.
#sschat
A6: I think it’s a good way to tie the past to the present. The students can read a primary source from 100 years before, but you can find a podcast which discusses it with a modern twist. It makes the old “boring” stuff relevant. #sschat
A6) one of my fav ways to get Ss to listen is to get them active a little. I call it the Podcast Walkabout. I give them the link to listen ahead, the open it on phones and then we walk! (usually around 12 minute walk on campus) #sschat
How about studying them NOT just for "what was the main idea, supporting detail..." but asking about the craft: how well did they speak? did the sound add to the message? #sschat
A6: My suggestion is to back channel the conversation on something like a podcast. That way you get live reaction to what’s being discussed. You can do this on any website that allows real-time posting or posting after teacher approval #sschat
A6) and Peter is the best and he wrote back! So students were able to take their questions directly to a philosophy professor who has studied these issues his entire life. They **LOVED** getting letters back from scholars whose work they had read. It made it REAL. #sschat
A6: I like to have Ss record their writing (paragraphs, essays, etc.) and then listen to their audio. I found audio to be a more effective method for Ss when it comes to revising & evaluating their writing. #sschat
A6) Have students think about what makes a good podcast episode. Ask them what they think goes into creating the episode. Would it be easier to do a good podcast episode or a good paper? Why? What wwould they rather produce and/or consume and why? #sschat
There was a really good @ThisAmerLife episode a few years ago about middle schoolers. I played clips for students to discuss because THEY COULD NOT SEE WHAT THE KIDS LOOKED LIKE. Very important for certain kinds of conversation (like why someone were not asked to a dance)
#sschat
Oh yeah! We've written letters to @iandenisjohnson, a Putlizer-winner and expert on Chinese religion, many folks from The Atlantic and Washington Post, and NY Times. 9/10 times they write back! My students write letters constantly #sschat
In reply to

Exactly. A lot of these kids don’t even listen to the radio in the car, there’s always a movie on or phone. It’s just a different generation than ours. #sschat
It's not strictly social studies but I LOVE #stufftheydontwantyoutoknow. Students love the weirder side of history and they're all about conspiracy theories. With this podcast they can explore them while still learning. #sschat
Teaching active listening is also good preparation for having actual conversations. It's a hard skill these days because it isn't practiced much #sschat
Nice wording. For younger students I’d say “does this support your current thinking of have you learned something new?” But I like how yours is concise. #sschat
A5 One of the most engaging every April was Edward R. Murrow’s report from Buchenwald the day it was liberated by US troops in April 1945. https://t.co/a5FwPISLHx#sschat
Hey Eric, appreciate the hustle man and I think the intent is good, but we generally don’t do giveaways and or promote stuff during the chats.
Also want you to know I think teaching kids to speak is very important.
#sschat
A6. I would like to build an index of podcasts that "cover" CA History standards so that students could listen to something aside from the textbook. #sschat
A7: Our school was 1-1 iPad school and the iPads were loaded with GarageBand. A teacher in our school also built a recording studio and a 12th grade lit teacher made the students write and record podcasts that were re-imagined tellings of their fave book that year #sschat
A7: as an assessment! I have a lot of foreign students who complain about written exams, so I’ve had to play with how to assess a history class in new and inventive ways. #sschat
Hey Erik, appreciate the hustle man and I think the intent is good, but we generally don’t do giveaways and or promote stuff during the chats.
Also want you to know I think teaching kids to speak is very important, so glad you are on that side too.

A7. We just finished a project before Christmas break where students created a podcast over their research papers (I hate stopping the learning w/the submission of the paper). Recorded an episode about the process here: https://t.co/pkiTfi6RXR#sschat
A7 Record theme songs for historical people and events (Think a Knights Tale) and ask students to annotate with voice over why the theme song fits #sschat
A6. I would like to build an index of podcasts that "cover" CA History standards so that students could listen to something aside from the textbook. #sschat
A7) Listen to good podcast episodes, discuss what makes them good, break into elements, have students practice those elements, students create audio content on topic of choice, evaluate, how could they be improved, repeat. #sschat
A7: Here's a teachers guide to podcasting in the classroom quick download to help any teacher set up a podcasting lesson (includes student sample podcasts): https://t.co/DMKaUWoXkN#sschat
A7: My 10th graders also do original short stories in the fall. They could easily turn those into audio content. I teach for an online high school in Brazil right now and the students write poems and short stories and record on Garage Band and Audacity for assignments #sschat
A7 Having students make first person narratives is a great way to jigsaw through the content standards. https://t.co/6nFdOyoEcl Have Ss listen to them and ID historical details. #sschat
It's not a stone-engraved commandment, but I agree with @Mrneilhistory that we generally discourage commercial giveaways / discounts / solicitations during the livechat session.
