My favorite book is "A Child's Garden of Verses" by Robert Louis Stevenson. The verses still 'bump' around in my head as the years click on by. #BookCampPD
Hi #BookCampPD ! Noel, ELA teacher from NC here. My favorite relaxing book would be a book of poetry. Current favorites are Louder Than Hearts and Blue Horses.
Hi everyone. George, Secondary Humanities and English teacher here - coming to you from Japan. I have this lovely Monday off, so I'm going to try and multitask! #BookCampPD#teachpos
Sylvia, Writing coach and RDG tchr @BrandonHSEagles ... I have not read recently for fun ... but did enjoy The Butterfly Effect while waiting in an office the other day 😇 #BookCampPD
Thank you, Meredith!! I can't wait to share this course with my students!! ALways looking for ways to empower my students to take control of their own learning! #BookcampPD
A1. I loved the reflective questions @mandyeellis added just before or after a new chapter.
Sharing these types of questions, after students are reading, could help them focus their reflection. #BookCampPD

Mel from Manitoba, Canada. The last student book I read for pleasure was Wonder (great book!) and my most recent teacher book I read was #LeadLIT which I loved too! #BookCampPD
A1: I work collaboratively & cross-curricularly, incorporating SEL across settings w/multi staff helps promote better retention/carry over of skills learned. In follow up lessons, we discuss how learned skills apply to our new lessons/read alouds. #BookCampPD
A1: We reflect on the situations the characters find themselves in and how we would react. We talk about strategies to understand difficult passages and do close readings. #bookcamppd
A1 Books are full f stories students can relate to or think about. Having students think about how they can connect to these stories within their own lives allows for reflection to occur. #leadlit#BookCampPD

Our Ss share their learning and reflect by engaging in role playing, charades, @Flipgrid, peer to peer sharing w/classmates & younger level schoolmates
#BookCampPD
A1- This year I started more independent reading and I am conferencing with students. Why are you reading this book? What do you enjoy doing? #bookcampPD
I carry a book w/me everywhere too! We have also gotten our Ss in this habit this year w/our new rdg initiative. This way, they can read during less structured times such as waiting in bus lines at dismissal. It's working like a charm! #BookCampPD

A1: While reading with my Ss I work to ask a lot of questions so they are able to make the connections themselves. Having kids yr after yr it is fun to have them make connections from previous years. #BookcampPD
I try to discuss student's choice books and my choice books, the same way we discuss the books I use for instruction. That way they (hopefully) see the connections between what we are doing academically to what "good" readers do. #BookCampPD
At CMS, we are striving to make reading fun again! All teachers in the building are committed to building literacy. When students read, we want them to think, talk, and reflect so that they can grow and become empowered in every area of learning #BookCampPD
A1: My students are so young/new to reading, that I would need to model reflective reading for them and help them understand the process step by step in several sittings, but they can get there!! #BookCampPD
Start With Why – February 3rd, Ted Huff, Guest Moderator – February 10th, continued conversations about this book. <-- the final book in our Fall Focus! I hope you'll be able to join us! #BookCampPD
Sounds like close reading or spending time with text ... as tchrs, isn’t that (shouldn’t it be) a part of our planning process as well as modeling it in class #BookCampPD

A1: Reading is what Kelly @KellyGToGo calls "imaginative rehearsal." It allows students to reflect on things they haven't yet experienced. In our class we argue, talk, and write about the themes, characters, & lessons in these imaginative rehearsals to learn/reflect. #bookcamppd

#BookCampPD
another way to encourage students to use reading as a way to reflect on their learning is by allowing them to read in home language.
My students LOVE taking turns and read aloud in their lang to the class.
#BookcampPD
A1 I guess being very thoughtful about the material we share and discuss in the class. Teaching students to make connections while they are reading can help them become more reflective readers. Lots of modelling and discussion. Ask "good" questions. #BookCampPD
A2- Read alouds is how I cover my standards but then as I am conferencing I can talk with students about how those standards work out in their books. #BookCampPD
A1: reflecting as learners and people is important. Think alouds and text to self connections allow scholars to reflect in meaningful ways. #BookCampPD
When at all possible, I give them the choice between 2-3 books that I have pulled as possibilities for instructional purposes. Unfortunately we have a new reading series this year (always a blessing and a curse) and the choices are happening a little less this year. #bookcamppd
A2: I choose read aloud texts and texts for mini-lessons, but in my classroom Ss self select their independent reading texts to store in their book boxes. My selections cover the curriculum and their selections fuel student engagement through choice! #BookCampPD
A2: You can use choice boards and reading menus to allow students to read at the right cognitive level, yet with the option to select their reading passages. Curriculum shouldn’t be compromised, but connecting to text is of utmost importance #BookCampPD
A2 I’m #HackLearning this morning we discussed a #HackLibraries and Book Tastings ... I’m going to work with my media specialist to create a cool book pass AKA Book Tasting, so sts can find a good book #BookCampPD
A3. So many teachers have created magical spaces where reading occurs in their classrooms and all over the building.
Please share yours! We would love to see it. #BookCampPD
A2: I carve out and fight for time to allow students to read whatever they want. I also incorporate whole class novels, so students are always reading at least two books. Best of both worlds! #bookcamppd
A2: Giving Ss opportunities to choose books for the classroom library, having book talks to spread the excitement as well. Independent reading time is their choice reading time whereas I use our classroom read aloud to share a new topic, series, author, genre, etc. #BookCampPD
A2 Covering the curriculum and standards are in daily read alouds, mini lessons, and IRAs. Student Choice and voice is tapped into when students choose their independent reading. Not limiting by what they can read. Allowing them to build up a joy for reading. #leadlit#BookCampPD
A2: Some of my classes asked for independent reading time at the beginning of class. I am going to allow them independently select material to read each day during this time. #BookCampPD
A2: We are intentional about giving kids access to books- no strings attached. We are starting book clubs driven by scholars! We ask them what they’re interested in to ensure we have those books available to them! Kids can check books out my office! #BookCampPD
A3. I believe @KymHarjes has mastered promoting her students' classroom as a space where reading is cherished. When she invited family members to come read on their child's birthday, this wraps fond memories into the lives of so many! Reading becomes a lifelong memory #BookCampPD
A2: Voluntary free reading is supported by research! My students can read ANYTHING they like...in Spanish and/or English
Book choice to cover the standard is my choice too and I choose #diversebooks#leadLIT#BookCampPD
A3 We do status of the class every morning. I love it! We have quick conversations every day with every student about what they are reading and everyone hears it! #BookcampPD
A2: I'm schl psy, so I take fdbk from Ts , review beh data & obs Ss, so I cover necessary skills. But I also listen to my Ss & their fdbk. I love learning about their str's & preferences! #BookCampPD
I use the reading conference forms from Literacy out of this world. I will have to find my other resource and who it is from. Really though just have a conversation like you would with a friend. Why did you pick that book? What pulled you in to it? #bookcampPD
I do this! I'm taking Spanish classes & building my Spanish SEL book collection! My Ss from last year have already asked me if we can do SEL lessons in Spanish this year too. MADE my day!! #BookCampPD
A3.1- I wish I had pictures of my classroom. There are books EVERYWHERE! I have my library out all the time for them to choose from, they have access to @EpicKidsBooks on the Ipads, and I also pull seasonal books and favorites out of my secret hiding spot. #bookcamppd
We’ve adopted @mandyeellis ideas from the book! My ELA teachers are posting her templates for what they’re currently reading and we’ve posted QR codes for books we’d like our babies to read #BookCampPD
A3: Being that I am not a classroom teacher, I still promote literacy by having great books students can borrow from my library and I highlight "new arrivals" on my bulletin board. We run two literacy lunchtime groups for fun and have lots of cozy spaces to read. #BookCampPD
A3: You have to be excited to read, share your own reading, be seen reading, and then set up the expectation and routine where students, all students have a dedicated time to read. #bookcamppd
Getting kids excited about reading is about modeling, choice, patience and lots of reflection. We should never be critical of a student who is attempting to be a better reader. #bookcampPD
A3.2- I also make a big deal when our @Scholastic book box comes in. We unpack it together and I give a quick book talk over each one. They love that I am always excited about the new books I have purchased for us all to enjoy. #bookcamppd
My daughter @msiwanicki and I found stuff at tag sales and @GoodwillIntl. She found someone who was giving away stuff and when they found out she was a teacher, they were thrilled! #bookcampPD

A3:Books are everywhere in our class! One of my first lessons of the year is how to hold and care for our cherished books. No books are off limits. When I start a read aloud, I’m mindful to smile/share excitement about the new journey this book is about to take us on! #BookCampPD
A3: I show my excitement about reading w/my Ss. I can get pretty animated. I've read in their home language (taking Spanish classes now as 25% of our Ss are from Span spkng homes), I've even worn a costume as the character. Ss LOVE that! #BookCampPD
A3~
Books galore, accessible, old& new, cozy reading books/spaces all over room, Ss can borrow /take home any they choose, i model reading to them, independently & in pairs 😊📚

A2: I carve out 15 minutes at the end of the day to do read for pleasure time. They can read any book they want, any way they want and any where they want. Alone, with a friend, with a teacher. On the floor, on the couch, on a bean bag, in a chair, on the carpet! #BookCampPD
Would you like to help spread the word about our marvelous chat and #PLN members who make it so amazing?
Just send me a DM with an address you would like a sticker or magnet sent to. Easy as that! #BookCampPD
A3: having a variety of reading spaces and furniture that allows the reading experience to be enjoyable. Providing tools that enhance the act of reading any time or place. #BookCampPD
Please thank our guest moderator @Shapiro_WTHS for leading our chat tonight!
Craig also suggested our 2 chats, that occur at the same time, join together for a joint chat. #teachpos and #BookCampPD
On January 27th when the focus is the book, "The Wild Card" you can join both!
Thank you, Emily!! I love my classes and applying my new skills so much!! The Ss & I learn so much from each other during these lessons. It's been such a beautiful thing! ❤️ #BookCampPD
Let's continue this discussion about being leaders of literacy next Sunday evening at 7:30 EST when @mandyeellis joins our chat.
Isn't it wonderful to have an author share her thoughts with all of us?
See you then!! #BookCampPD
A3: I don't really have the room to create a "reading place" but I do believe that providing choices whether is a variety of books and online resources for read alouds encourages my students to cherish reading!
