The #educoach hashtag is used by instructional coaches around the world. We chat each Wednesday at 8pm CST on Twitter and use the hashtag throughout the week to share resources, ask questions and collaborate with instructional coaches.
💫My #EduCoach success today was seeing that a Tt had printed out my weekly #SmoreEd 📰 that highlighted @KathyPerret post on Think Pair Share Variations!
Hi! Kenny, a HS literacy coach in NC! My #eduwin was watching our literacy team support teachers in engaging students in their learning targets today! #educoachhttps://t.co/KoVNnaQszF
I’m a coach in VT, mostly math, but I am most proud of making my connecting flight home from weeklong training with @jimknight99 this week. #educoach#weekwin
#EduCoach 👋🏼Serve as an Instructional Coach at Bartlett MS in Porterville, CA! 📘Enjoying our Winter Book Study on #TheCoachingHabit authored by @boxofcrayons 📒🖍
Hi! Julie Nelson, Advanced Learning Facilitator in Arlington Heights, IL. I continue to work on slowing down and staying curious during conversations. #educoach
Let’s get started with tonight’s topic: Chapter 5 - The Lazy Question. (Our questions are framed with an instructional coach in mind, but feel free to insert your own role to respond to the question.) #educoach
#EduCoach Totally agree @mrsjulienelson about slowing down & staying curious. Even though we want to jump into a helpful, advice giving, & answering mode find & embrace your own slow motion the Matrix mode. ;)
A1: used it yesterday as I was coaching a principal on developing PD for staff. It helped her focus in on how to spend our time... made things more concrete. #educoach
A1: Of all the questions so far, I find "What do you want?" may be the one I least use...but, that has to change! We can read our colleagues' minds. #educoach
A1 Have not tried @boxofcrayons "What do you want?" but have used "What do you want out of this (lesson)?" and got great reflective conversation from it. #educoach
questions in a virtual coaching call this week. WOW - worked like a charm. I had the coach reflect on the use of them in our convo - she felt like they really opened up her thoughts. #educoach
A1 I used all of @boxofcrayons questions in a virtual coaching call this week. WOW - worked like a charm. I had the coach reflect on the use of them in our convo - she felt like they really opened up her thoughts. #educoach
#EduCoach A1: Indeed! I have focused more on nothing but questions this week with the Ts I serve. It has truly made me feel more impactful as an IC. "The moment we begin to think we have all the answers, we lost the questions." -Madeline L'Engle
Q2 In your work, you may have found yourself playing one of these roles in the drama triangle. Is there one that you find yourself in often in the workplace? #educoach
#EduCoach A1: Indeed! I have focused more on nothing but questions this week with the Ts I serve. It has truly made me feel more impactful as an IC. "The moment we begin to think we have all the answers, we lost the questions." -Madeline L'Engle
This week I had a teacher who I’ve been coaching in math this year tell me she is feeling so much more confident in her teaching and thanked me for all of my support. I had to give her a hug 😊#educoach
Teacher efficacy is so important! We have to have the belief that we can and we will make change for our students. Sounds like you are helping build that within your colleague! #educoach
A2: I strongly identify with the rescuer. I want to "help" so much that I stack my plate so high. When I do that, I'm not empowering others though. #educoach
#EduCoach I know! I have been amazed with how these two questions "How can I help?" and "What do you want from me?" Where have these two questions been my whole life?! So impactful and gets to what the Ts I serve really want instead of me second guessing.
A1 I used all of @boxofcrayons questions in a virtual coaching call this week. WOW - worked like a charm. I had the coach reflect on the use of them in our convo - she felt like they really opened up her thoughts. #educoach
Q3: Asking the Lazy Question, “How can I help?” or “What do you want from me” can can lead your colleague to ask a direct and clear request and stalls you from leaping into action. How can that help you step out of one of the drama roles? #educoach
A3 Asking this was interesting. It cause the coach I was coaching to reflect back on previous work together and ahead to next steps and what she may need to further her goals. #educoach
#EduCoach A2: I have tended to serve as the Rescuer but love @boxofcrayons words of wisdom of "resisting moving into advice-giving, solution providing mode."🎯is to empower Ts to find their own solutions. Going to resist falling for the cheddar on the mousetrap. 🧀🐀
A2: I primarily mentor novice teachers so I often find myselffalling into a rescuer mode. They get so overwhelmed, especially in year 1, that I just feel the need to be that life raft. #educoach
A2: To empower teachers, avoiding these roles is critical. I'm realizing that helping can be a form of 'one upping'. Yikes! Bottom line: People like to solve their own problems! #educoach
A3: Sometimes we think we know what Ts need/want. By asking them these 2 q’s, we get right to point. No more time wasted assuming their needs #educoach
Q4: How can using the phrase, “That’s a great question. I’ve got ideas, but before I share, what are you first thoughts?” before asking the Lazy Question help the person you’re coaching? #educoach
#EduCoach A2: Yes investing in the process of coaching with humble inquiry & genuine & deeper curiosity takes longer and as @boxofcrayons shared might be messier but in the end it is so worth it! Leads to empowered Ts & as @kennycmckee shared-- as Coaches not as overwhelmed.
Q3: Asking the Lazy Question, “How can I help?” or “What do you want from me” can can lead your colleague to ask a direct and clear request and stalls you from leaping into action. How can that help you step out of one of the drama roles? #educoach
A4: Prompting teachers to share their ideas and solutions first validates them and builds confidence. Working with novice teachers, this is especially needed to limit dependence on the mentor / coach. #educoach
#EduCoach A4: 👍🏼
💥Ways to coach w/curiosity
🗣"That's a great question. I've got some great ideas, which I'll share with you. But before I do, what are your first thoughts?
🗣"That's terrific. What else can you do?"
🗣"This is all good. Is there anything else you can try?"
A4 I think if my collaborating teacher can identify their own solution, it will be a better solution--and they know their situation better than I can. #educoach
A4: maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t see why you couldn’t switch up this order... unless they’ve asked for a solution. And if they have, “what do you want” could still be reflective. Wouldn’t it depend? #educoach
A5: By asking these types of questions we are saving the Ts and our time. We can then spend our time focusing on helping the Ts achieve their learning goals #educoach
#EduCoach A5: Indeed if we immediately come w/solutions then we will tend to see every situation as a nail. As @boxofcrayons shared in his 🎞 then we miss seeing certain things because they are tied to OUR solution. Instead use tools that empower, encourage, & engage not that 🔨
A5: I gets to the heart of where the teacher wants support. Especially, the variation, "What do you want from me?" Of course, tone is important when asking that question. #educoach
A5: Yesterday i used the lazy question when the person I was coaching was in an abstract infinite loop. The lazy question grounded us and gave her the power choose which is huge. #educoach
A4 Important to give teachers the opportunity to speak and come up with ideas/solutions first! No one likes it when someone sounds like a knowitall! #educoach
#EduCoach A5:
Autonomy drives --> engagement --> people acfing & taking ownership over their own journey of finding solutions & resources especially in your abscence.
A6: Instead of coming in as “rescuer” mode and rush to assumptions of what Ts need of us, we are asking them directly and allowing them to reflect on their learning needs #educoach
A6: asking how we can help make us better listeners because we commit ourselves to letting the teacher ask. We need to understand what they are asking. We’re not waiting with a solution perched on our lips ready to fly. #educoach
A7 I see myself as thinking with the teacher, and to think with the teacher I need to know her/his thought so if I don't know what they're saying, I check with questions or paraphrasing. #educoach
A7 Guilty of this. Nodding and mmm mmming and your mind is really wondering. Just because I’m doing those things doesn’t mean I’m focused and listening the best I can! So bad! #educoach
A7: Makes me think of the act of being compliant vs authentically engaged. Both look similar, yet one produces true learning. Listening deeply takes no distractions and taming the advice monster. #educoach
A8: Definitely trying on some new questions... seeing how they look in different lights... seeing what feels authentically me, but better than I really am. That’s the goal, anyway. #educoach
A8 I plan to continue to use the questions in my coaching with coaches. We are introducing the questions to our area teacher leaders later this month and having them practice them. #educoach
#EduCoach A8: Working on embracing the sacred pause, the power of silence, humble inquiry, & coaching with a genuine & deep curiosity. For it is in silence as @boxofcrayons wrote that allows for a "space for learning and insight."🖋
A9: I'm really more aware of the need to drill down in precise terms how teachers want my help? I think I need the other questions before the Lazy Question to make that effective though. #educoach
