A1: used it yesterday as I was coaching a principal on developing PD for staff. It helped her focus in on how to spend our time... made things more concrete. #educoach
  • kennycmckee - Moderator Feb 7 @ 9:14 PM EST
A1: Of all the questions so far, I find "What do you want?" may be the one I least use...but, that has to change! We can read our colleagues' minds. #educoach
  • DawnEdTech Feb 7 @ 9:14 PM EST
A1 Have not tried @boxofcrayons "What do you want?" but have used "What do you want out of this (lesson)?" and got great reflective conversation from it. #educoach
  • mrsjulienelson Feb 7 @ 9:14 PM EST
A1: I tried it and realized what the T wants will take a few years of work, so with empathy we tried to break down the goal. #educoach

A2 Guiltily, I know I like playing the Rescuer. Rereading the chapter reminds me that I have to put work into NOT doing the work! #educoach
  • lsmith0917 - Moderator Feb 7 @ 9:19 PM EST
Teacher efficacy is so important! We have to have the belief that we can and we will make change for our students. Sounds like you are helping build that within your colleague! #educoach

A2: I strongly identify with the rescuer. I want to "help" so much that I stack my plate so high. When I do that, I'm not empowering others though. #educoach

A1 My wife and I used the @boxofcrayons questions to work through a complex issue we were both worrying about, and they helped. #educoach

  • mrsjulienelson Feb 7 @ 9:22 PM EST
I am with you on that. How can we support without 'doing for?' #educoach
    In reply to @kennycmckee
  • mydesk_not Feb 7 @ 9:22 PM EST
#EduCoach I know! I have been amazed with how these two questions "How can I help?" and "What do you want from me?" Where have these two questions been my whole life?! So impactful and gets to what the Ts I serve really want instead of me second guessing.
    • KathyPerret - Moderator Feb 7 @ 9:16 PM EST
A1 I used all of @boxofcrayons questions in a virtual coaching call this week. WOW - worked like a charm. I had the coach reflect on the use of them in our convo - she felt like they really opened up her thoughts. #educoach

This is where I like the intentional laziness. Space to get in check. #educoach
    In reply to @kennycmckee
  • lsmith0917 - Moderator Feb 7 @ 9:24 PM EST
Q3: Asking the Lazy Question, “How can I help?” or “What do you want from me” can can lead your colleague to ask a direct and clear request and stalls you from leaping into action. How can that help you step out of one of the drama roles? #educoach
  • kennycmckee - Moderator Feb 7 @ 9:24 PM EST
Sometimes I take the stance of doing together, so I feel like I'm modeling for the teacher. I could get more consistent with that! #educoach
    In reply to @mrsjulienelson
  • KathyPerret - Moderator Feb 7 @ 9:26 PM EST
A3 Asking this was interesting. It cause the coach I was coaching to reflect back on previous work together and ahead to next steps and what she may need to further her goals. #educoach
  • mydesk_not Feb 7 @ 9:26 PM EST
#EduCoach A2: I have tended to serve as the Rescuer but love @boxofcrayons words of wisdom of "resisting moving into advice-giving, solution providing mode."🎯is to empower Ts to find their own solutions. Going to resist falling for the cheddar on the mousetrap. 🧀🐀
  • EDMathHysteria Feb 7 @ 9:27 PM EST
A3: I used the lazy question yesterday. It helped me to hold back from trying to be “right” and allowed me to defer. #educoach
  • jimknight99 Feb 7 @ 9:27 PM EST
My eduwin was getting to learn from #educoach rockstar @EDMathHysteria for a whole week last week.
  • slowe_75 Feb 7 @ 9:28 PM EST
A2: I primarily mentor novice teachers so I often find myselffalling into a rescuer mode. They get so overwhelmed, especially in year 1, that I just feel the need to be that life raft. #educoach
  • KathyPerret - Moderator Feb 7 @ 9:28 PM EST
Glad you were able to connect! :) #educoach @EDMathHysteria is a rockstar!
    In reply to @jimknight99, @EDMathHysteria, @EDMathHysteria
  • mrsjulienelson Feb 7 @ 9:28 PM EST
A2: To empower teachers, avoiding these roles is critical. I'm realizing that helping can be a form of 'one upping'. Yikes! Bottom line: People like to solve their own problems! #educoach

  • kennycmckee - Moderator Feb 7 @ 9:29 PM EST
A3: I think if I were in a persecutor role, it would have me shift my perspective to teamwork. It's hard to insult someone on your team. #educoach
  • StephGarand12 Feb 7 @ 9:29 PM EST
A3: Sometimes we think we know what Ts need/want. By asking them these 2 q’s, we get right to point. No more time wasted assuming their needs #educoach
  • lichuckik Feb 7 @ 9:29 PM EST
Kylene Lichucki, inst. tech facilitator from AR. One success is getting to take part in Global Play Day! #educoach
  • lsmith0917 - Moderator Feb 7 @ 9:29 PM EST
Q4: How can using the phrase, “That’s a great question. I’ve got ideas, but before I share, what are you first thoughts?” before asking the Lazy Question help the person you’re coaching? #educoach
  • mydesk_not Feb 7 @ 9:29 PM EST
#EduCoach A2: Yes investing in the process of coaching with humble inquiry & genuine & deeper curiosity takes longer and as @boxofcrayons shared might be messier but in the end it is so worth it! Leads to empowered Ts & as @kennycmckee shared-- as Coaches not as overwhelmed.
  • readwritethrive Feb 7 @ 9:30 PM EST
A3: Being direct helps improve clarity on both ends! "With what we can control at the moment, what can we work on together?" #educoach
#educoach

A4: It encourages reflection and problem-solving! It also results in more investment (on the teacher's part) in next steps. #educoach
  • lsmith0917 - Moderator Feb 7 @ 9:32 PM EST
Clarity is important when thinking about forward progress and making shifts. #educoach
    In reply to @readwritethrive
  • EDMathHysteria Feb 7 @ 9:33 PM EST
I actually think they ask for less than we think they need. This is the power of asking the question and then ONLY do what is asked. #educoach
    In reply to @StephGarand12
  • slowe_75 Feb 7 @ 9:33 PM EST
A4: Prompting teachers to share their ideas and solutions first validates them and builds confidence. Working with novice teachers, this is especially needed to limit dependence on the mentor / coach. #educoach
  • StephGarand12 Feb 7 @ 9:33 PM EST
A4: You are having the teacher problem solve and reflect first before offering solutions. Promotes reflective practice #educoach
  • lsmith0917 - Moderator Feb 7 @ 9:34 PM EST
A4: It allows for a pause and processing time before jumping into your own ideas. #educoach
  • mydesk_not Feb 7 @ 9:35 PM EST
#EduCoach A4: 👍🏼 💥Ways to coach w/curiosity 🗣"That's a great question. I've got some great ideas, which I'll share with you. But before I do, what are your first thoughts? 🗣"That's terrific. What else can you do?" 🗣"This is all good. Is there anything else you can try?"
  • lsmith0917 - Moderator Feb 7 @ 9:35 PM EST
Q5: How can using the Lazy Question focus your coaching work? #educoach
  • jimknight99 Feb 7 @ 9:36 PM EST
A4 I think if my collaborating teacher can identify their own solution, it will be a better solution--and they know their situation better than I can. #educoach
  • EDMathHysteria Feb 7 @ 9:36 PM EST
A4: maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t see why you couldn’t switch up this order... unless they’ve asked for a solution. And if they have, “what do you want” could still be reflective. Wouldn’t it depend? #educoach
  • KathyPerret - Moderator Feb 7 @ 9:37 PM EST
A4 Yep - coaching is about being curious. We can learn so much from the teachers we partner with. #educoach
  • StephGarand12 Feb 7 @ 9:38 PM EST
A5: By asking these types of questions we are saving the Ts and our time. We can then spend our time focusing on helping the Ts achieve their learning goals #educoach
  • mrsjulienelson Feb 7 @ 9:38 PM EST
Very true & respectful of Ts work. So much of coaching is helping Ts process their own situation and ideas. #educoach
    In reply to @jimknight99
  • mydesk_not Feb 7 @ 9:39 PM EST
#EduCoach A5: Indeed if we immediately come w/solutions then we will tend to see every situation as a nail. As @boxofcrayons shared in his 🎞 then we miss seeing certain things because they are tied to OUR solution. Instead use tools that empower, encourage, & engage not that 🔨
  • kennycmckee - Moderator Feb 7 @ 9:39 PM EST
A5: I gets to the heart of where the teacher wants support. Especially, the variation, "What do you want from me?" Of course, tone is important when asking that question. #educoach
  • EDMathHysteria Feb 7 @ 9:40 PM EST
A5: Yesterday i used the lazy question when the person I was coaching was in an abstract infinite loop. The lazy question grounded us and gave her the power choose which is huge. #educoach
  • kennycmckee - Moderator Feb 7 @ 9:41 PM EST
Q6 How can the Lazy Question introduced by @boxofcrayons: “How can I help?” slow down our rush to action? #educoach
  • lichuckik Feb 7 @ 9:42 PM EST
A4 Important to give teachers the opportunity to speak and come up with ideas/solutions first! No one likes it when someone sounds like a knowitall! #educoach
  • EDMathHysteria Feb 7 @ 9:42 PM EST
That 🔨 and nail expression is a favorite of mine. Very apt. #educoach

A6 It encourages conversation and being thoughtful before a decision is made in haste. #educoach
  • StephGarand12 Feb 7 @ 9:44 PM EST
A6: Instead of coming in as “rescuer” mode and rush to assumptions of what Ts need of us, we are asking them directly and allowing them to reflect on their learning needs #educoach
  • EDMathHysteria Feb 7 @ 9:45 PM EST
A6: asking how we can help make us better listeners because we commit ourselves to letting the teacher ask. We need to understand what they are asking. We’re not waiting with a solution perched on our lips ready to fly. #educoach
  • kennycmckee - Moderator Feb 7 @ 9:46 PM EST
A6: It keeps me from jumping to conclusions. The teacher thinks through the issue aloud, which helps both of us. #educoach
  • kennycmckee - Moderator Feb 7 @ 9:46 PM EST
Q7 What is the difference between using active listening behaviors and actually listening? #educoach
  • mrsjulienelson Feb 7 @ 9:47 PM EST
A6: It helps tame the 'advice monster' and encourages teachers to reflect honestly. #educoach
  • EDMathHysteria Feb 7 @ 9:48 PM EST
Yes! This makes me think of reciprocity. When the coaching is good both coach and teacher grow and change. #educoach

A7 Guilty of this. Nodding and mmm mmming and your mind is really wondering. Just because I’m doing those things doesn’t mean I’m focused and listening the best I can! So bad! #educoach
  • kennycmckee - Moderator Feb 7 @ 9:50 PM EST
Q8 What new habits are you working on as a result of reading The Coaching Habit by @boxofcrayons? #educoach
  • EDMathHysteria Feb 7 @ 9:51 PM EST
I find paraphrasing to be an important check on my own understanding and an opportunity to hold myself in check. Slow things down. #educoach

  • lsmith0917 - Moderator Feb 7 @ 9:51 PM EST

  • mrsjulienelson Feb 7 @ 9:52 PM EST
A7: I try to take notes to summarize what is being said, it helps me stay focused when listening. #educoach
  • EDMathHysteria Feb 7 @ 9:53 PM EST
A8: Definitely trying on some new questions... seeing how they look in different lights... seeing what feels authentically me, but better than I really am. That’s the goal, anyway. #educoach
  • KathyPerret - Moderator Feb 7 @ 9:53 PM EST
A8 I plan to continue to use the questions in my coaching with coaches. We are introducing the questions to our area teacher leaders later this month and having them practice them. #educoach

A8 Guided by @boxofcrayons , I've been thinking about the "judgment monster" and doing my best to sooth the savage beast #educoach
