  • MsLRice May 14 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A1) reflect the (critical and academic) independent thinking of students #ksedchat
  • eric_falls May 14 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A1 grades should measure/reflect what ss have achieved/shown what they have learned. #ksedchat
  • Willmdunn May 14 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A1) In theory, to show how well a student has mastered material. #ksedchat
  • MissFuller May 14 @ 9:13 PM EDT
A1: To assess student understanding of the content or skill. #ksedchat
  • AngSuperPowers May 14 @ 9:13 PM EDT
A1. The purpose of grading is to communicate progress on standards in theory. To many students and parents, it's about compliance šŸ˜¢ #ksedchat
  • missbertels_ May 14 @ 9:14 PM EDT
A1: I see grades as a barometer of sorts for Ts, Ss, and parents. Theyā€™re *one* way to quantify understanding. Traditional grades were a source of immense pride and stress for me as a student #ksedchat
  • MsNic_ May 14 @ 9:15 PM EDT
A1 Iā€™ve got mixed feelings on grades. Iā€™d like to think theyā€™re for measuring student learning/success, but honestly, sometimes grades are just an effort to try and motivate students. #ksedchat
  • dwayneetaylor May 14 @ 9:17 PM EDT
A1 - Grades, in theory, serve as a barometer to gauge the effectiveness of the instruction and the receptiveness of the learner. #ksedchat
  • MsNic_ May 14 @ 9:19 PM EDT
Grades don't matter in middle school (according to my students). They can fail a core class and still go on to high school with no consequences except being ineligible for fall sports. #ksedchat
    In reply to @Willmdunn
  • abigail_crane May 14 @ 9:20 PM EDT
    Question 2 #ksedchat
  • MsNic_ May 14 @ 9:20 PM EDT
I am all for measuring student learning and success! But as an ELA teacher, I feel like I am CONSTANTLY grading. It's exhausting. #ksedchat
    In reply to @MissFuller
  • MrCarter_Ed May 14 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A1) To communicate to student, parents, and other stakeholders the mastery of content the student has demonstrated. #ksedchat
  • AngSuperPowers May 14 @ 9:21 PM EDT
  • abigail_crane May 14 @ 9:21 PM EDT
I found grades kept me compliant. I knew how to work a system, so when Ts truly challenged me outside that system, I felt frustration and resentment #ksedchat
    In reply to @missbertels_, @AngSuperPowers
  • PreK33 May 14 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A2: I tell my parents to look for growth. Growth shows learning. It may/may not be on grade level, but it is growth! #ksedchat
    In reply to @abigail_crane
  • zlatnikj May 14 @ 9:21 PM EDT
Joe Zlatnik, AP in Eudora jumping in late. Last day of school is tomorrow for our kids! #ksedchat
  • abigail_crane May 14 @ 9:22 PM EDT
Love this. Do you find parents pushback or embrace the emphasis on growth? #ksedchat
    In reply to @PreK33
  • aboone_angie May 14 @ 9:22 PM EDT
A2: I think there has to be honest conversation with parents or we will be continually fighting the attitude of thatā€™s not how it was done when I was in school #ksedchat
  • dwayneetaylor May 14 @ 9:22 PM EDT
A2 - My team, along with many other Ts at our school, are transitioning to standards-based grades - which gives the stakeholders a better view of what the Ss have mastered. #ksedchat
  • zlatnikj May 14 @ 9:22 PM EDT
A1) Grades are a way to communicate the students' level of mastery in a given course. #ksedchat
  • MsLRice May 14 @ 9:22 PM EDT
A2 model and share learning through portfolio so Ss can see what growth and learning both look and feel like when removed from grades. Thatā€™s whatā€™s real. #ksedchat
  • MissFuller May 14 @ 9:23 PM EDT
A2: That's why I'm here! The pressure parents put on their kids and sometimes even Ts can be tough to handle. Growth > Perfect As. #ksedchat
  • missbertels_ May 14 @ 9:23 PM EDT
A2: To me, itā€™s a systemic issue that needs to be reversed. Higher ed still relies on traditional grading practices. The state still evals schools based on test scores. Overhauling using evidence-based practices so that stakeholders see results is key #ksedchat
  • PreK33 May 14 @ 9:24 PM EDT
The district....because that's what they want to see. #ksedchat
    In reply to @perezhasclass, @abigail_crane
  • zlatnikj May 14 @ 9:24 PM EDT
This is a great point. #ksedchat
    In reply to @missbertels_
  • rascalrue285 May 14 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A2: We have to communicate that we report summatively. We have to communicate our system, or reporting mechanism. Change isnā€™t always easy. #ksedchat
  • AnnaCalven May 14 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A2) I have started the conversation with my students about what grades should be. I think it will take time. Moreover we need to get higher ed to change. #ksedchat
  • abigail_crane May 14 @ 9:25 PM EDT
Share more about how standards-based grading looks at your school! #ksedchat
    In reply to @dwayneetaylor
  • Willmdunn May 14 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A2) I went mastery based grading this year. Grades are not percentage correct, theyā€™re my call on how well they know the content. Iā€™m hoping to shift this to more joint-grading with the student having a voice. And students have all semester to show me. No deadlines. #ksedchat
  • PreK33 May 14 @ 9:26 PM EDT
I had a dad of a special needs Ss in tears because of the growth the S showed! Will the S ever be on grade level? Not likely. Is he learning? YES! #ksedchat
    In reply to @abigail_crane
  • abigail_crane May 14 @ 9:26 PM EDT
What methods of communication do you think work best? #ksedchat
    In reply to @AngSuperPowers
  • eric_falls May 14 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A2 need to completely get rid of compliance grades. I think T's have gotten much better about this. There is a great culture shift happening and buy in on all sides will take time. #ksedchat
  • rascalrue285 May 14 @ 9:26 PM EDT
Our school is doing this. Pushback has been strong because change is hard! #ksedchat
    • dwayneetaylor May 14 @ 9:22 PM EDT
A2 - My team, along with many other Ts at our school, are transitioning to standards-based grades - which gives the stakeholders a better view of what the Ss have mastered. #ksedchat
  • MsNic_ May 14 @ 9:28 PM EDT
A2 Thatā€™s a tough one. My difficulty is we have so much late work, Ps are concerned about Ssā€™ grades, when in reality, itā€™s 21st century skills that need improved. They know the content; they donā€™t know organization or deadlines. So the purpose of grades is lost then. #ksedchat
  • MrCarter_Ed May 14 @ 9:28 PM EDT
A2) Letā€™s use a 3-pronged approach here. 1st, communicate your purpose of grades. Emphasize grades demonstrate content mastery, not classroom compliance. 2nd, encourage Ss to grow by allowing multiple opportunities for them to demonstrate their knowledge. (1/2) #ksedchat
  • zlatnikj May 14 @ 9:29 PM EDT
A2) Communication is key. We can have these conversations but at the same time at high school level GPA, class rank, etc. carry so much weight for post secondary endeavors. These things take on a life of their own for students and their families (and schools) #ksedchat
  • abigail_crane May 14 @ 9:29 PM EDT
How do you best communicate with stakeholders? #ksedchat
    In reply to @zlatnikj
  • missbertels_ May 14 @ 9:30 PM EDT
Thatā€™s a hurdle that I always anticipate. It has to be all or nothing if a school system is going to make a major change. Vertical alignment of pedagogy/strategies/grading practices #ksedchat
    In reply to @rascalrue285
  • abigail_crane May 14 @ 9:30 PM EDT
How can we encourage change without pushing too hard? #ksedchat
    In reply to @rascalrue285
  • abigail_crane May 14 @ 9:30 PM EDT
AWESOME discussion happening here. Let's get to Question 3 #ksedchat
  • PreK33 May 14 @ 9:32 PM EDT
A3: PBL: show what you know and be able to explain your process. #ksedchat
    In reply to @abigail_crane
  • MrCarter_Ed May 14 @ 9:32 PM EDT
3rd, remove graded assignments that do not directly correlate to content mastery. Itā€™s tough, but be sure that YOU are maintaining the same understanding that you want parents/students to have about your grading practices. (2/2) #ksedchat
  • aboone_angie May 14 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A3: with my students, we always have the opportunity to correct and fix their work. I donā€™t force them to, but provide the chance to #ksedchat
  • AnnaCalven May 14 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A3) While I do not teach a "core" class, I have taken the advice of #HackLearning Anthology with having my students reflect and then self grade. #ksedchat
  • eric_falls May 14 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A3 ss need lots of feedback and opportunities to revise and iron or mistakes before you assess them. #ksedchat
  • Willmdunn May 14 @ 9:34 PM EDT
A3) a#Always provide feedback and feed forward. And I donā€™t use red pen. #ksedchat
  • missbertels_ May 14 @ 9:34 PM EDT
A3: I had to consciously move away from using grades as a behavior consequence, BUT that doesnā€™t always mean natural consequences donā€™t apply. I penalize late work but accept it as long as the grading window allows. More opportunity to show learning. #ksedchat
  • zlatnikj May 14 @ 9:34 PM EDT
A3) I think the first step is being 100% transparent in terms of what is assessed & what goes into a grade. Then making sure it is communicated first thing w/ Ss & Families. This would go a long way in alleviating issues. No one likes surprises when it comes to grades! #ksedchat
  • MissFuller May 14 @ 9:35 PM EDT
A3: Rubrics, checklists, self-assessment (but never solely), conferences, presentations. I allow revisions on 2 essays/ semester. #ksedchat
  • abigail_crane May 14 @ 9:35 PM EDT
I've read about the psychology of pen ink! Little things make such a difference #ksedchat
    In reply to @Willmdunn
  • abigail_crane May 14 @ 9:35 PM EDT
Love this suggestion. Do you allow unlimited re-dos? What about turning in late assignments? #ksedchat
    In reply to @eric_falls
  • abigail_crane May 14 @ 9:36 PM EDT
What strategies help students learn to accurately self-grade? #ksedchat
    In reply to @AnnaCalven
  • MsLRice May 14 @ 9:36 PM EDT
Nothing like a little window leak to interrupt an edchat. Still happy it is raining #ksedchat
  • abigail_crane May 14 @ 9:36 PM EDT
What helps you determine what assignments to keep? #ksedchat
    In reply to @MrCarter_Ed
  • zlatnikj May 14 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A3 cont) I also think at upper levels it is incredibly important to give feedback and conference w/ Ss about that feedback. This may be an unpopular opinion but no crossword puzzles or word searches for grades at the secondary level. Work should be meaningful. #ksedchat
  • abigail_crane May 14 @ 9:37 PM EDT
What kinds of grading practices work best with PBL? #ksedchat
    In reply to @PreK33
  • MsLRice May 14 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A3) PBL, feedback, cooperative learning and working, STEM and student goal setting #ksedchat
  • abigail_crane May 14 @ 9:37 PM EDT
Have you considered unlimited revisions? What are pros and cons of this? #ksedchat
    In reply to @MissFuller
  • missbertels_ May 14 @ 9:38 PM EDT
A3: Also...STOP grading everything that students touch! Giving feedback does not equal ā€œthis goes in the gradebook.ā€ Overwhelmed educators do nothing for classroom culture. #ksedchat
  • PreK33 May 14 @ 9:38 PM EDT
I'm not sure.... I'm looking into how to incorporate PBL with preschoolers. I went to a breakout session at a conference about this topic recently. #ksedchat
    In reply to @abigail_crane
  • abigail_crane May 14 @ 9:39 PM EDT
Would love to hear about what you learned! PBL + preschool would be a rewarding challenge, for sure! #ksedchat
    In reply to @PreK33
  • AnnaCalven May 14 @ 9:40 PM EDT
This has been a process of reflection focusing on what they learned. This last project I had them answer 2-3 Qs from each section here: https://t.co/eg6JszObDN. I also have them give me a grade their parents expect to see. #KSedchat
    In reply to @abigail_crane
  • eric_falls May 14 @ 9:41 PM EDT
Ss are expected to correct mistakes on all assignments. I give full credit for work done within the scope of a unit, if it's not well done I give it back and communicate what I want to see. #ksedchat
    In reply to @abigail_crane
  • abigail_crane May 14 @ 9:41 PM EDT
Love the connection to standards! They help us determine what students should know, and we can decide how they learn it #ksedchat
    In reply to @MrCarter_Ed
  • abigail_crane May 14 @ 9:41 PM EDT
And here's Question 4. Keep the ideas flowing! #ksedchat
  • PreK33 May 14 @ 9:43 PM EDT
A4: Thank God I teach PreK, although I believe there is too much testing in PreK. #ksedchat
    In reply to @abigail_crane
  • Willmdunn May 14 @ 9:43 PM EDT
Who here uses/is familiar with one-point rubrics? #ksedchat
  • abigail_crane May 14 @ 9:44 PM EDT
Using "feedforward" to promote achievement works best for my kiddos. If the grade/assessment doesn't move us toward a goal, I don't look at it #ksedchat
    In reply to @missbertels_
  • abigail_crane May 14 @ 9:45 PM EDT
I don't think I'm familiar. Would love to hear more! #ksedchat
    In reply to @Willmdunn
  • eric_falls May 14 @ 9:45 PM EDT
A4. I like a 1 point rubric and setting the baseline of what the difference between superior work and average work is. I've experienced kids really wanting to show that they can do superior stuff. Of course not all ss buy in but I think I've gotten a few more to step up #ksedchat
  • zlatnikj May 14 @ 9:45 PM EDT
A4) The best intrinsic motivation I have seen this year is connected to a student's IPS. They are motivated to learn and excel in what they are interested and want to pursue. They are also motivated extrinsically by their grades so they can pursue those things post HS. #ksedchat
  • missbertels_ May 14 @ 9:46 PM EDT
A4: This is tough. Grades as we know them are generally bad, but they are so interwoven into the system. I think we could use the framework to show Ss how it applies to new assessment strategies: ā€œyou do x for y outcomeā€ vs. ā€œyou do x for y result.ā€ #ksedchat
  • AnnaCalven May 14 @ 9:46 PM EDT
A4) Some Ss are great at complying. Using the A as the above and beyond and talk about what above and beyond the basic really is. #KSedchat
  • Willmdunn May 14 @ 9:47 PM EDT
A4) Excellent question!...to which I have no decent answer! Tempted to simply say they canā€™t. But now Iā€™m trying to conceive ways that collect student work over time, applying grades that can change with the growth, and having them reflect on that arc. Any ideas? #ksedchat
  • MsLRice May 14 @ 9:47 PM EDT
A4) student examples, peer editing and peer feedback with self reflection. Why do you do something better? Because it matters to you. They have to connect and care about the topic. #ksedchat
  • missbertels_ May 14 @ 9:47 PM EDT
I use a ā€œpracticeā€ vs. ā€œgameā€ analogy w/ my littles. If you were evaluated mostly by your performance in practice every day, where would you be? Nowhere good, so no, I wonā€™t be grading all the papers all the time. #ksedchat
    In reply to @abigail_crane
  • AnnaCalven May 14 @ 9:48 PM EDT
A4) I have also been enjoying teaching a pass/fail class. They only need to get a 60% to pass. #KSedchat
  • MissFuller May 14 @ 9:50 PM EDT
A4: Tough question! It's different 4 each S. Some are motivated by GPA; some, college; some, career; some, threats of emailing Ps! #ksedchat
  • abigail_crane May 14 @ 9:50 PM EDT
Last question of the evening: #ksedchat
  • PreK33 May 14 @ 9:51 PM EDT
A5: Honestly? I think you need to have buy-in from the building and district admin. #ksedchat
    In reply to @abigail_crane
  • abigail_crane May 14 @ 9:51 PM EDT
That's what summer is for...collect all those great ideas from the year and apply them for next year's kiddos! :) #ksedchat
    In reply to @Willmdunn, @eric_falls
  • MissFuller May 14 @ 9:53 PM EDT
A5: It's vital to communicate your risk taking to admins & parents; then, share with colleagues! And always ask for feedback! #ksedchat
  • eric_falls May 14 @ 9:54 PM EDT
A5 that's tough, have to have a culture of positivity and trust between colleagues and admin. #ksedchat
  • AnnaCalven May 14 @ 9:54 PM EDT
I use it to give my Ss space to fail and take risks. This is their 1st year getting letter grades but, anything less than an A is Fail.#ksedchat
    In reply to @MissFuller
  • missbertels_ May 14 @ 9:54 PM EDT
A5: Donā€™t be dismissive or unsupportive of colleagues who are doing things differently than you are. None of us have all the answers, and education can be so experimental at times. Our classrooms are often far ahead of legislation and research. #ksedchat
  • aboone_angie May 14 @ 9:56 PM EDT
A5: I think having those teacher friends that are willing to have an open and honest conversation about grading is a great place to start #ksedchat
  • zlatnikj May 14 @ 9:56 PM EDT
A5) Encouragement and being a positive soundboard for feedback are the best things we can do for one another. #ksedchat
  • mrvesco - Moderator May 14 @ 9:57 PM EDT
Thank you @abigail_crane for hosting #ksedchat tonight! Great topic and conversation! Come back next week! @DHEPrincipal will be leading and you don't want to miss it!
  • Willmdunn May 14 @ 9:57 PM EDT
A5) Some might call me boorish, but I like to think Iā€™m ā€œcandidā€. I simply put it out there- ā€œis [fill in the blank] a better way?ā€ Maybe Iā€™m luckier than most, but my department colleagues at least hear me out. And there is value in rebuttal as well. #ksedchat
  • abigail_crane May 14 @ 9:58 PM EDT
Thanks for challenging your thinking with me, KS T's! It was a pleasure. Goodnight! #ksedchat
  • AnnaCalven May 14 @ 9:59 PM EDT
Thank you @abigail_crane! This topic is something that has been on my mind. #KSedchat
