Rena Hawkins, Elementary principal from Smithville, MO! I’m a HUGE fan of @casas_jimmy Culturize! I have quoted it all year as we face big transitions! #BookCampPD#BookSnaps
Please consider extending your collaboration between Saturday chats (as @PrincipalGarden did) by posting tweet(s) about books that others in our #PLN might be interested in. Caring is sharing! #BookCampPD
Be sure when you answer questions, you label them A1, A2, A3. We’re going to be exchanging "Front Porch Swing" comments, so be sure to share your thoughts and add #BookCampPD to each tweet.

A1: I am taking a leadership role in PD this year it has been fun to try and build PD towards the interests of the staff not just a directive. #BookCampPD

My colleague and I started meeting with students who were failing one or more class. We wanted to check in with them and see how we could help. #BookCampPD
A1 Leveraging my curiosity and #edtech strengths with a background in collaborative groups to help build small grouops and data teams in our school. #BookCampPD
A1: I am currently mentoring two colleagues as they work towards getting their G/T certification. So many awesome convos. and PD for me, too as it makes me reflect on my own practice as well. #BookCampPD
A1 I have shared a lot of learning about communication w/ my administration and attempted to improve communication and professional learning among staff after being in a #CULTURIZE book study #BookCampPD
A1: Leaders model successes and failures. Through some serious reflection, I have set some new professional goals. Always learning and growing... #Culturize#BookCampPD
A1: Ensure @MapleWarriors is a positive place for all. Empower all to lead! Celebrate! Started positive phone calls to staff families this week. They deserve it too! #BookCampPD
A1: Being a "cheerleader" for a colleague in a difficult moment. Reminding her that she is an amazing educator and we are here for her. Strong colleague relationships matter as much as strong student relationships. #momauguinproud#relationshipsfirst#bookcamppd
A1) recently played more of a role in helping teachers get students to a deeper understanding of content. With that I’ll be taking a new role of Dean of I structiom in my school next year. Playing the role of teacher/instructional coach #BookCampPD
A2: When I need a reprieve, I usually try to remember that time heals everything. What happened today is often resolved tomorrow or next week by smiling, showing empathy, willingness to learn from the experience, and patience #bookcamppd
A2: I think it's okay to say "HEY! I am NOT okay!" Then we take a break. Pause. Breathe. Consult with someone you trust & remember that we can't possibly do this alone. Leaning on each other is key to self-care & ultimate success! #bookcamppd
A2: I think it's always important to step back and realize that if things don't go to plan most people aren't even going to know, especially our Ss who are most important. There is always tomorrow! #bookcamppd
A2 rely on your PLN, take some time to reflect and ask yourself why, or just take a breather and come back to it later, it is okay, we all have challenges sometimes #bookcamppd
A2: My dear friend @DrMaryHoward just reminded me of this the other day. When today is bad focus on tomorrow but also look with an open mind at what made today bad. It gives you the opportunity to grow. #BookCampPD
A2: Find "your person" and talk it out. Lean on your PLN, we are always here for each other. Take a moment to remind yourself of your "why." Sometimes we get stuck on the "what" we have to do and forget it's really all about the "why" we do it! #thinkpositive#bookcamppd
A2: Whan things aren't going right, I find my marigolds... and possibly an after school "book club" at a local establishment that serves adult beverages. My people always re-energize me and keep me going! #BookCampPD

Question Three - You're ready for springtime by getting your "groove on" while swinging! What in education can make you smile with joy after coming through a challenging time? Please explain. #BookCampPD
A2: Don’t take yourself too seriously. Find friends/colleagues you can confide in. Look for the opportunity to learn through the struggle. It makes us better and stronger! #BookCampPD
A2: after venting with my "people" whether PLN or friends at school, I always try to go back and thank them after I've changed my mindset. Let others know that listening means so much! #relationships#BookCampPD
A2) Forgiving myself if I am not at 100% in how I feel or how I am performing is big for me. Then I try to get more sleep or whateer I need so I can get back to my best. #bookcamppd
A3. CELEBRATING all of the growth I’ve seen in Ts and Ss. We have to take the time to honor what we’ve accomplished throughout the year. Spring=growth 🌷 #BookCampPD
A3: Those "lightbulb" moments when it finally clicks for a student!! Those kinds of smiles & excitement make ME smile long after the moment passes! I love the look of CONFIDENCE in a student's eyes! 💡 #bookcamppd
A3: Having a day where the positive outweighs the struggle. When you feel like your tribe is also in peak state and lots is being accomplished. Also doing little things to help improve others day feels so good! #BookCampPD
A3: calling a parent on speaker with a S who just made amazing growth on a test and passed with flying colors. The tears of joy heard through the speaker and words of endearment make the struggle worthwhile #BookCampPD
A3) When I think about my Ss. They bring me such happiness (5 & 6 year olds can make a T feel very loved). Even on my toughest day, their sweetness fuels me. #BookCampPD
Q4 "Culturize" mentions culture builders - pgs 160-165 are specifically centered on being a "Merchant of Hope." Student interviews, home visit mentor program or teacher calls are explained. How can educators help families feel they're active member of a school team? #BookCampPD
A3: When others smile it brings my smile back, when I've come through a difficult time. It could be the smile of a child, friend or colleague. I truly believe that smiling is contagious! #smilemore#bookcamppd
A3: When my students spoil a novels end because they use evidence in the text to figure it out before the author states it. #noticeandnote makes me happy #BookCampPD
Question Three - You're ready for springtime by getting your "groove on" while swinging! What in education can make you smile with joy after coming through a challenging time? Please explain. #BookCampPD
Yes! That's another reason I love to work with that age. They start the year as non-readers and writers, & by the end of the year they are reading & writing (along w/many other things). It's amazing! #BookCampPD
A3: Find a really fun and empowering lesson that gets the kids outside on a sunny day and smiling. Get a colleague on board to bring their kids too... The more the merrier! Always lifts my spirits and makes me feel awesome! #BookCampPD
My favorite thing as a T was to do home visits! You can learn so much about a family during a short visit. It’s the perfect stepping stone to build relationships with parents/families. #bookcamppd

A4: I started using Facebook for family communication last year and I am amazed at how easily I have been able to build relationships with caregivers! I use live videos, pictures, and slideshows as well as weekly live "Teacher Talks." Families truly feel connected #bookcamppd
A4: Same as staff and students; provide Voice and Choice. Parents/families have a great viewpoint into the student’s motivation and needs. Make them a part of the student’s growth plan. #BookCampPD
A4 After a 3 yr study of 14 schools engaging in teacher home visits for students, researchers at CSUS found evidence home visits could + student performance, jumpstart parent involvement, reduce discipline problems & increase overall positive attitudes toward school. #BookCampPD
I haven't responded earlier, but as a parent I'm going to chime in at this question!
Make families LITERALLY members of a school team. They should be represented on every committee. In the classroom, create roles specifically for them that doesn't require presence. #BookCampPD A4

A4: I like inviting family members in to read and help with special activities! Having an open door policy! Sending positive emails, phone calls home and using my Remind App to share pictures of students actively learning! #makingconnections#bookcamppd
