wishes you the best Michala! Thanks for being here. Is everything else okay? https://t.co/bu4N55kNJx
Good morning! I'm hopeful that today we'll get power back! Matthew unleashed on my neighborhood so it's been a campout since Sat.
We're going through the same experience at our house! It's not easy!
Good morning, ! You all look lovely today. Brian from Ontario & Michigan here.
It doesn't get easier does it? Ugh!
Glad to hear the you're okay, Michala. Did your home make it through without damages? Do you have water?
so sorry to hear that, good luck
Oh no! Good wishes for a speedy recovery from this!
Worst advice is that Ts shouldn't smile for the first 6 weeks! That's not the way to build relationships!
"Never smile until after December" Worst advice ever!
I can relate. So bitter sweet - happy for them, but hard on us parents
GM. Never let them see you sweat. was the advice . I didn't take it. That is like saying don't be human
Good morning It's The Greg. 😔
Worst piece of advice "Don't get emotionally attached." I want to give my all, that includes emotions.
Hey, hey, hey, hooray it's Wednesday
Just tweeted the SAME thing!
I was told not to smile until Christmas. I found that being warm and human helps build relationships that motivate Ss to learn.
Good morning .
Brian, HS principal from Mass.
Agreed! That's the same worst advice I received: "I don't even want you to smile until Christmas!" Ugh.
Good morning friends! How are we this AM? David MS Principal from VA here.
Good morning . Stacey from NJ. Up for the next 15 minutes.
Second worst: Never let students see you fail.
Worst piece of advice I got as a teacher was don't smile until December.
G'morn today goes back to school after 4 hurricane days. Blessed we had time 2 get neighborhoods cleaned up.
Hang in there my Virginia friend! Things will turn around!
Teach the kids how to set up a paper with proper heading (as the thing most important to teach them)
Worst advice I received as a new teacher: collaboration and sharing was looked on as a sign of weakness.
In my classroom I posted "think for yourself, your teacher could be wrong." Was told to remove it or be fired. I complied.
So far, everyone's worst advice was about not building relationships. We're kindred spirits here, aren't we? :-)
Thanks, I was really lucky!
seeing me struggle, on occasion, allows Ss to let me see it too. able to move the learning forward quicker as result
worst advice " Don't let "them" get to know you too well, don't share anything personal " ( you kidding me ?)
Wow! https://t.co/WqeCEJqQRF
Worst advice I received as a new teacher: collaboration and sharing was looked on as a sign of weakness.
A coworker who says, "if you make them cry, it's good because shows they still care," when students cry. Crying = not my thing
Good morning! Hoping today goes a lot more smoothly than yesterday!
Hope you made it through with little damages!
Welcome home! Your friends support you!
Oh my. So if you couldn't do it all on your own you couldn't cut it as a teacher?
Maybe the worst piece was, You should get out, you are not going to make a difference with "these" kids. 23 years later...
Don't share what works with your colleagues. It will weaken my game in the classroom.
How awful!! https://t.co/HL1PkELoRM
Worst advice I received as a new teacher: collaboration and sharing was looked on as a sign of weakness.
Read the grade novel, even if you know it isn't right for your class
Okay...that makes me mad. I'm going to put that sign up today.
WOW...How far we have come... https://t.co/i4MixZEZU4
In my classroom I posted "think for yourself, your teacher could be wrong." Was told to remove it or be fired. I complied.
Wow. Way to make everyone feel safe. https://t.co/ZAWjaunMz4
In my classroom I posted "think for yourself, your teacher could be wrong." Was told to remove it or be fired. I complied.
Kids were engaged yesterday but uber loud. I got the Silent light app last night. Never had such a loud class! Feedback on the app?
People were afraid inner-city students would see you as weak.
Anyone else having a hard time "liking" these posts. Every one I am like oh my, wow, but like them..no I don't..
I was very lucky, thanks!
G'mornin', Friends!
Working through the short week here on the Jersey shore.
Karl, 5/6 T checking in this AM.
Hope you're well!
Indeed! 3rd worst advice: YOu have worked too hard to share your stuff.
Or the marks for the cursed title page!
Doesn't mean I always heeded this poor advice....
I've been lucky to have great role models! But worst advice was "not every kid is going to like reading-they just have to do it"
Love your new profile pic!
Worst advice was don't try new things and take risks, you don't want to make a mistake.
G'morn David! Glad to have you at
Struggling with this morning's question...I honestly can't recall receiving bad advice...I have created poorly devised PD in past.
Good Morning! Lots of early risers has cut into my morning twitter time
Don't put too much effort in because the SS' parents are not.
Lie.
The "don't smile" thing really gets me every time. Maybe in the 50's, but it's still offered as advice today?
Wow I love that, as an admin I think I will post it. https://t.co/7IFxCjCjx7
In my classroom I posted "think for yourself, your teacher could be wrong." Was told to remove it or be fired. I complied.
You don't need to be here, this isn't your thing. That thing (technology) is now my job. https://t.co/OoSccOUf0U
Happy Wednesday friends. So....
What is the worst piece of advice you got as a teacher? ( & did you take it?)… https://t.co/gpY17IxBe9
The dog does that to me sometimes!!
Don't make mistakes?!? But...how will we get better if we don't screw up?
Morning! How are things in NY?
Whoops! I was supposed to attach that to "the think for yourself comment" Don't know what happened
Absolutely! This group has saved me a million times over.
I was thinking of he same thing! 😝
Oh my!!(though I've definitely met teachers who seem to feel this way)
I thinks lots of people still adhere to some version of this one... https://t.co/rxHmQLONzS
Indeed! 3rd worst advice: YOu have worked too hard to share your stuff.
I say let's break down the silos of the classrooms... and of the school. A rising tide lifts all the ships. https://t.co/bscilNuwk7
Don't share what works with your colleagues. It will weaken my game in the classroom.
Yeah, I don't listen. This was years ago too
is now trending in USA, ranking 28
I hope that advice giver sees how much you've meant to those kids! https://t.co/OCn4QGgHKi
Maybe the worst piece was, You should get out, you are not going to make a difference with "these" kids. 23 years later...
That would be so hard! Actually I had to stop reading Pax for the same reason! Just not right for us this year.
I used to hear, "You're only with them 6 hours a day. What difference will that make? None!"
I'm with you there! I wonder if we can throw some "best advice" responses in the mix!
My best to all today! I always appreciate the awesome 'advice' and support from my friends! Better together!!! 😊😊😊
My worst piece of advice was don't be anything but a science teacher. Basically don't take an interest in your students
Guaranteed to keep that fixed mindset deeply entrenched
Whatttt? You were told to remove it? Lol https://t.co/bLGqphYSoD
In my classroom I posted "think for yourself, your teacher could be wrong." Was told to remove it or be fired. I complied.
The educators I knew to give bad advice are not longer . I won't give energy to bad advice by reposting it
Good for you and that decision. Had the same discussion. Pax seems different as a read aloud, doesn't it.
Morning good people...Kenneth HS admin from Va joining the chat
Ugh... I think I may have said the opposite of all of these to my teachers. Build a better mousetrap daily. https://t.co/DQuEcLv6gj
Worst advice was don't try new things and take risks, you don't want to make a mistake.
I was thinking that should be a question too! Maybe tomorrow!
I stay to people, and I walk away from bad advice
YES!!! I have a couple of babes that were crushed when we stopped so they are reading it on their own!
mine are my girls who are never up and moving this quick.
I also like don't have favorites. I just switched who they were! 😉
Worst piece of teaching advice: You know more than the kids. Be the boss. Gets no one anywhere! Thankfully I knew better.
Good morning, . Teacher workdays for us in Johnston Co, NC rest of week due to . We are lucky but many are still wo power.
There are times when being on a team is very difficult. If I don't agree with using certain methods, systems, policies, gets lonely.
Let's move ahead positively from this point.
Happy Wednesday!
I got that too and promptly ignored it
That's just sad. It might be the only smile they get all day.
I don't remember bad advice. Then again I trust myself to listen-n-filter. Bad advice never feels right, genuine. Has to be tossed.
I would like to hear more about this Greg.
Happy 😊 🎉 Birthday Lindes.
agreed that is also one of my favs that I still hear
Happy birthday ! How nice that you have today off and still joined us! :) I hope you have a great day planned!
It's so nice to have this fam here when I wake up.
That is counter to every conversation I've had in the past year--wow!
Ugh,I hate when teachers aren't sharers! I mean, if your idea is so great,go patent it! Otherwise, email it! https://t.co/cILTHg4tLf
Indeed! 3rd worst advice: YOu have worked too hard to share your stuff.
Reminds me of the 'free advice' I'd get as a 1st year Teacher.Thankfully I believed I could make a difference
The bad ideas really put the importance of our work in perspective. I'll try not to be a cautionary tale today! Happy Wednesday!
It was early 90's and we new better but sadly fear and "this is the way we've always done it drove so many decisions."
Well the school I was in served Ss from housing projects and you had to be "just as bad" to deal w/ them
Best Advice: There is a lesson in everything. Search for it. Use it. I do and taught my Ss to do the same. Learn no matter what!
Well said, Greg! (I thought your handle was Gregbaby! Lol) https://t.co/DzKI5Jr5Gt
I say let's break down the silos of the classrooms... and of the school. A rising tide lifts all the ships. https://t.co/bscilNuwk7
Don't share what works with your colleagues. It will weaken my game in the classroom.
Indeed! My takeaway from this am's chat: turn every bad advice item I heard into a positive action w/ my Ss today.
Wow! That poster is solid advice. It's why I ask so many Qs. https://t.co/IOg4knLYGc
In my classroom I posted "think for yourself, your teacher could be wrong." Was told to remove it or be fired. I complied.
Definitely a lesson on what NOT to say! Have a great day. https://t.co/P9m3jtqsF9
The bad ideas really put the importance of our work in perspective. I'll try not to be a cautionary tale today! Happy Wednesday!
Yes my first year from a central office staffer... "You really think you are going to make a difference?"
Have a great Wednesday everyone!
Have a great day everyone! Extra coffee will be needed for warmth and energy!
Indeed! I proud that my school has an "open source" mindset...willing to share everything in & out of the school.
completely agree! Best part of my early morning!
Love this! Will do the same :) https://t.co/GZOgJclW6o
Indeed! My takeaway from this am's chat: turn every bad advice item I heard into a positive action w/ my Ss today.
Did that work? Still learning about urban edu so asking the questions. Thanks Greg.
Yay! I'll be teaching it as a strategy to HS Ss. Can't wait.
I can work with that... if I were in Hollywood. :-). https://t.co/bBrtouhiYN
Well said, Greg! (I thought your handle was Gregbaby! Lol) https://t.co/DzKI5Jr5Gt

I just had that conversation with my 5th graders yesterday. All just wtg for T-provided answers. GRRRRRR!
Thanks, friend! Miss you!
Have a great day everyone!
Coffee kicked in. Gotta shower & made today awesome! Coaching new Ts today - Best part of my job. My advice won't sound like these!
Today's chat was very actionable!
NO. They just want to know you care about them. Build a relationship that shows them that. But yes stay firm
The hubby and I are spending the day together... No plans (yet).
We do too: open doors, collaborating, observing each other, sharing in PD - such a great team!
Miss you too. Maybe we can catch up again soon.
I don't recall being given bad advice. I followed my own path but did have a great mentor!
Make it a great day family! Reach, Teach, Motivate, Inspire, BE THE DIFFERENCE
Glad to hear that it's minimal. Such a storm! Death toll in Haiti is over 1000 - we mourn for them.
Mine too! My colleagues are the bestest ever! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ . Makes crawling out of bed easier each day, for sure. https://t.co/JU38rkRdUa
Indeed! I proud that my school has an "open source" mindset...willing to share everything in & out of the school.
Sounds like that person needs to return to the school
Totally agree! Always an inspiration to start my day.
Started my day with & a delish cup o' Joe. Inspired and ready to coach new Ts today Make it a
Thanks for the positive vibes this morning my friends. I was dragging this morning & needed this inspiring convo!
Powerful! Collaboration opens so many doors! https://t.co/liP1yskDmU
We do too: open doors, collaborating, observing each other, sharing in PD - such a great team!
Uuuf, yes it does. Such a change from the lonely profession I entered all those years ago!
Yay so glad to check in with you in the morn! Still working on student data privacy/security? https://t.co/Sz2EBLi7Zl
Totally agree! Always an inspiration to start my day.
Worst piece of advice as a teacher? Teach like everyone else just to remain consistent!
Yes. Had question last nite at meeting regarding this with an online service for district.
I have s whole stack of resources to review. Very time consuming
Strategies for engagement. Do you have best practices you share? Thanks much Greg
Whoops! I was supposed to attach that to "the think for yourself comment" Don't know what happened MORE >> https://t.co/I3RixtooxR
Worst piece of advice I have received as a T? I don't remember...I barely have enough memory to remember the best advice for my Ss!
Oh, Mary Lou... YES you can do this!
Oh my, now that is something to think about!

Mindsets have hopefully changed. https://t.co/xXpvQMVZic
Worst advice I received as a new teacher: collaboration and sharing was looked on as a sign of weakness.

Make explicitly detailed lesson plans. Also, 'don't let principal see you're kids reading quietly too often." Ugh!!!
- worst piece of advice? "Get a whistle to call them to order" 😳
I've received the same, but still tried to make it my own to fit my Ss needs.
anyone use . in their classrooms to teach research writing? Using in and looking for lesson ideas...
Yeah, recognizing bad advice and turning it to be better is the trick, right? :D
Any attendees: please share what attending has meant to you! I'll use to help promote
Worst advice is tough to pinpoint. Can recall bunch of tips I took in the past, geared towards S compliance. I think differently now
Hmmm that sound quite unpleasant
I think most advice I've gotten has been well intentioned, even if it was "bad."
Hate the advice, not the adviser? :)
Mark, you make me smile - good morning!
That's a great way to put it
No one directly said this: "We have so much to teach, some kids just won't get it; move on." Now: teach, assess, reteach, assess...
'Bet you can already tell which ones will end up where you used to work!' (PRISON) Not advice, but most offensive comments
I have 'think for yourself' streak & it clearly makes many Ts @ my school uncomfortable (very old school/traditional)
I have 'think for yourself' streak & it clearly makes many Ts @ my school uncomfortable (very old school/traditional) carlameyrink
Worst advice: "You need to yell. Get up in their face." As a student teacher. I did not heed this advice. https://t.co/POiQmHxNNJ
Happy Wednesday friends. So....
What is the worst piece of advice you got as a teacher? ( & did you take it?)… https://t.co/gpY17IxBe9
Also, from the same teacher: "Don't smile until December." And, for Soc. Studies, "Just read the textbook." https://t.co/POiQmHxNNJ

OMG yes such old school and mis directed !
yikes, the only think a textbook is good for in History is to hold a desk up
"Every teacher in same subject and grade should be doing the same thing the same way everyday." I failed mi… https://t.co/HxvfxXFqvq
Happy Wednesday friends. So....
What is the worst piece of advice you got as a teacher? ( & did you take it?)… https://t.co/gpY17IxBe9
it was so great to meet F2F at ! ( how did the rest of the day go ???)
yes that may be true but still,,,,,
yup if we don't collaborate we stagnate
so wrong on so many levels
we ( and the Ss) are glad you stayed ! ! https://t.co/bfDh15v6FM
Maybe the worst piece was, You should get out, you are not going to make a difference with "these" kids. 23 years later...
