#walkforwisdom Hello everyone! So good to be here tonight. It took me five years to write How Fast Can You Run. I meet with Michael several times a week, talking with him and hearing his story. When I wrote the book, I wanted to give you the experience that I of sitting with him.
#walkforwisdom At Drexel where I teach creative writing, service learning informs every aspect, from volunteering at the writing center to working with incarcerated people in prisons.
#walkforwisdom Has anyone ever hosted a read-a-thon? It's so much fun for students to compete to read books. I've hosted read-a-thons were students read 100 books and others where they read 10.
#walkforwisdom When I met Michael, he asked me to write a book about his life. I choose to write it as fiction because fiction gets into people's minds and hearts. Michael's story is inspirational. I am interested in students finding this story and having it inspire them.
#walkforwisdom Michael's story is especially relevant today. The refugee crisis is not ending. My book reminds us that all Americans came from elsewhere.
#walkforwisdom I am especially interested in exploring with students the everyday events in Michael's life and the obstacles he overcame. It's so important for students to read about people enduring everyday life and facing its challenges.
