Hey #bmoreedchat leaders! Greg- K, #TeamFelegy. Great to see so many student interns in the conversation tonight. Teaching is hard work, but it is JOY-filled!
A1: The story being told in my classroom is about collaboration and self evaluation. We must know ourselves before we can interact with others. #BmoreEdchat
Q1: I think my classroom story involves teamwork, creating a positive environment, and spreading kindness! Which also happens to be our virtue of the month!! 😊 #BmoreEdchat#ed446
A2) It seems like my most talkative and attention seeking students are the ones whose narrative is showing up in my classroom the most. #ED446#Bmoreedchat
A2: The narrative is of young people who have the power to make our world a better place. I need to do better in ensuring more of their voice comes out in our classroom story! #BmoreEdchat
A2- The narrative told in the classroom is shaped by each individual student in the class. Each person brings unique gifts and talents, interests and passions. Collaboratively, we work together to build, grow, and succeed. #bmoreedchat
A2. We definitely spend a lot of time cultivating a classroom community so our student's narrative definitely lead many class discussions and set the tone for our classroom environment! #bmoreedchat#ed446
My new book is available now on Amazon in paperback and Kindle. You can purchase Burned Out, Beaten Up, & Fighting Back: A Call to Action for America's Public Educators on Amazon here: https://t.co/BodQc4FTqt …#call2action4ed
#bmoreedchat a2 I believe that all my students' narratives have a place in my classroom. Who they are, where they come from, what dreams and aspirations they may have, etc are all relevant!
A2. The narrative that is being told in my classroom is a collective one. We are a unit. We work together as teachers and learners to discover new things and to shape our futures #BmoreEdchat#ed466
A2: Tried something new this year. Opened the year with personal narratives. Students were more than eager to tell their story. Great relationship building when I write and share mine too. #BmoreEdchat
I try my best to include all of my students narratives in the classroom by asking them about what they like to do, and including it in word problems or scenarios in math class. They love that small connection! #Bmoreedchat#ED446

Completley agree! In morning meeting this week we’ve been going around in a circle saying one kind thing we can do for someone today! The sudents love to hear what their peers have to say! 😊 #BmoreEdchat

A3- The story is constantly forming. Each day adds to the story being told, whether through new experiences and new learning, or new challenges and opportunities to explore. #bmoreedchat
A2: Loving all these great ideas. We don’t teach but really love the idea of putting education in the hands of the students. We do that through exercise. #BmoreEdchat
A2: When you walk into my classroom, you see the stories. I remind my students that this is their home at school. At their home there are family pics, artwork, etc. Our home does too? Hard work is up, their faces are shown, and their care for one another is evident!#BmoreEdchat

A3: Students and teachers should collaborate together to build the narrative. Purposeful listening combined with guidance is crucial in selecting activities & content which students can identify & grapple with. #BmoreEdchat
A3: They are the authors, and I consider myself their ghostwriter. They need guidance to make an impact with their voice; I show them how. #BmoreEdchat

A3: The story is everyone...spread the love of the story around...look for the tiniest most special moments to share...they will make a powerful difference. #BmoreEdchat
I believe everyone is the author of their own story and that when we teach we take these personal stories into account. It's so important that students realize they are the authors of their own narrative! #bmoreedchat
A3. That's what's so great about teaching...new authors each year. Bringing their own stories, adding to each others' stories, and writing new stories. #bmoreedchat#ed446

A1: Our story is that we are learning for the long haul, academically AND socially, using as many paths as possible. We start our day with the classroom oath, and it sets the scene for that to be true. This vid is from week 2, but it gives the #gist (#buzzword). #BmoreEdchat.
We do too! This morning, our community circle focused on compliments! We have a virtue of the week and they write virtue circles to each other when they see the virtue being shown. It has really helped them communicate positively. Kids are amazing! #BmoreEdchat

You need to be part of your classroom story; if you are not, others will write it for you. Speak up! Show off! Show people the value of public education. #BmoreEdchat

#bmoreedchat a3 all students can be the authors in our classroom narratives when they feel like their voices are being heard and that their stories MATTER!
A4: Arts. Arts. Arts. Whether that be through student artwork decorating our classroom, the art of teaching & building relationships, or the integration of art into our math activities...ART is how the story is told so that everyone has a voice that is heard. #BmoreEdchat

A4: Social media is your friend! Blast the Internet with positive education images! But don't forget to keep it local as well... Look for opportunities for your students to shine in the community. #BmoreEdchat
A4: Help kids understand their words matter and are worthy of being shared with a larger audience. Some of my kiddos submit to websites and magazines often. #BmoreEdchat
Morning Meeting is a really great time that we take every morning in order to share stories and address issues in the class or celebrate successes in the class. It really is the best way I have learned about my students and their stories! #bmoreedchat#ed446
#BmoreEdchat A4: Innovation and production. If it’s truly their home away from home, allow them to decorate, create, mess-up/clean-up, etc. Leave their mark to inspirer the next crew.
A4. One of my grad students created a photo story of her research participants talking about the obstacles they’ve had is schools as emerging bilingual learners. It was quite moving. #BmoreEdChat
A4 Hi! I am working with ELLs and their stories transcend cultures, languages, and boundaries. Such rich perspectives. I guess the storytelling strategy is perspective shift and having a voice in more than one cultural context. #BmoreEdchat

A4: Communicating, conversing, and simply talking! Talk to your kids, get to know them. They are fascinating with real stories and true experiences. And for all my @BaltCoPS teachers out there, isn’t this a great way to focus on literacy? #literacy#BmoreEdchat
A4: sometimes my students share more when it’s not in front of the whole class, but when they are given chances to write or draw to tell a story. It’s amazing to see, hear or feel what they’re really thinking! Empowerment is key 🔑 #BmoreEdchat#ED446
#bmoreedchat a4 The stories are being told by building relationships with my students!! I show them that I am interested in learning more about them and ask them about their lives outside of school.
A5: I'm constantly fighting societal misconceptions of what my kids are capable of. They like to tell *their* version of my story, even though they've never met my kids. That's why I got louder. #BmoreEdchat
A4 Through creating a classroom of shared inquiry and dialogue where students exersize listening, questioning, humility, trust, respect, and voice #BmoreEdchat#ED446
A4. In my classroom we make sure to do a morning circle everyday. This gives the students an opportunity to voice their thoughts or concerns and feel like their opinions matter! #BmoreEdchat#ed446
A5: It can be tough when Ss find themselves on the outskirts of the story. That resistance can happen when different life aspects are out of control and it just makes it that much more important to CONNECT with every kid. Good relationships are the secret key. #Bmoreedchat
A5: Complex Contradiction: The whole child matters (YES!). The arts matter (YES!). Our kids deserve to be heard in their communities (YES!). Yet, our schools face political debates over funding, safety, standardized testing, and equity to just name a few. #BmoreEdchat
A4: I saw a classroom with year-long timeline that ran the length of the room. Teacher and students added photos and artifacts along the timeline, which told the story of their year as a class #Bmoreedchat

All, have to step aside tonight. What a joy-filled discussion on our classroom stories! Have a great rest of your week on purpose! Continue to develop and share your classroom story! #bmoreedchat

A6: A big conflict we face is how we communicate with each other. Sometimes feelings get hurt because kids don't recognize or understand YET how all students communicate with different voice levels, word choice, and movements. #BmoreEdchat
A5: The reality behind the classroom. People forget that kids are PEOPLE. They have emotions, experience, lives. You don’t know their story unless you chose to get to know it. And no one can tell you that story other than these kids who are in it with you. #BmoreEdchat
A6. I think some of my gr5 students struggle with truly showing what it means to be kind and respectful to everyone in the school building. However, any conflict can be addressed by a meaningful conversation and compassion to resolve things, big or small. #BmoreEdchat#ED446

A6. A conflict that arises in my classroom is children respecting each other and understanding that each child is different but everyone deserves respect and kindness. #bmoreedchat#ed446
Reminds me of the shoe story. Everybody has a different size foot and we all need shoes with different purposes. They all are shoes, but each are unique. #BmoreEdchat
A6. A conflict that arises in my classroom is children respecting each other and understanding that each child is different but everyone deserves respect and kindness. #bmoreedchat#ed446
A3. Primarily the students as they are the focus but also colleagues as they provide ideas to make the story more interesting or diverge on an alternative path. #BmoreEdchat
A6 I feel like a lot is planned to be done “to” the students, like series of modules and assessments. I wish more time could be devoted to exploring concepts “with” the students and giving th time to add the new learning to their life-long learning stories. #BmoreEdchat
A7: High expectations and honest conversations. Sometimes as educators we have to say we messed up and that is ok. If we are going to hold students accountable, we must be as well! #BmoreEdchat
A4. Some students share their learning story through a portfolio, highlighting key points along the way. Others prefer a more traditional means. I sometimes document their story through twitter. #BmoreEdchat
A5 I always found it complex for our story when students left the class mid year unexpectedly and we didn't have a chance to say good bye or ask where they were going next #Bmoreedchat
A7:I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, TALK. Talk about it and work together at resolving it. Teach your students how to resolve their own conflicts and together you can grow as a little family. #BmoreEdchat
A7. Absolutely. Conflict provides an opportunity to learn something about others and oneself. Can be tricky if not everyone is willing to engage in finding a resolution. #BmoreEdChat
NONE whatsoever. And I’ve seen kids thrive when they see that you genuinely care about them. I hear a story about a bearded dragon everyday. I actively listen and show interest; he keeps coming back! #BmoreEdchat
A7: Absolutely! Some of our best class discussions have been in response to conflict because there are opportunities for students to work together in coming up with peaceful solutions for those conflicts in our classroom #BmoreEdchat
A7: Absolutely. Conflict doesn't have to be contentious, and growth comes from conversation. Ithink of it like sandpaper shaving off the rough edges. #BmoreEdchat

Thanks everybody for being here this evening for #BmoreEdchat and a big shout out to all the interns @LoyolaEducation representing the teaching profession! Have a great rest of the week! See you next Wednesday!
#bmoreedchat a7 Definitely! If we have meaningful conversations, we can work towards resolving any conflict that may arise and therefore build a stronger classroom community
That’s why you do it; that’s why I do it; that’s why WE do it! #BmoreEdchat It isn’t always peaches and cream, but st the end of the day, we know it’s real.
A6. Apathy. Some students don’t seem to want to get involved with anything. Many times it’s a fear of failure - they don’t feel they know enough to try. It’s hard to continually address. #BmoreEdchat
