#HipHopEd Chat is a weekly cyber cypher (chat) where stakeholders within Hip-Hop and Education come together to discuss issues that impact the youth and adults within our local, national and global communities. #HipHopEd Chat is a virtual form of professional development for Educators, workshop for Parents and other Adults and a brainstorming session of Hip-Hop practitioners. Our #HipHopEd chats are every Tuesday from 9-10 EST. on Twitter.
Do you think the documentary series "Hip Hop Evolution" is a good resource in teaching people the history behind hip hop and it's importance in many communities? #ElonEd#HipHopEd
#BlackLivesMatterAtSchool is an opportunity for educators to expand the curriculum to include issues that affect the lives of their Black students #HipHopEd
Not in an attempt to separate but to bring clarity and deepen the focus, there is a difference between Black Lives Matter in School and the Black Lives Matter movement #HipHopEd
While #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool is largely K12 focused, I discussed it in my undergrad multicultural education class on Monday, shared it with colleagues, and also added it to my email signature #HipHopEd

Now these are all small, surface level actions to take around #BlackLiveMatterAtSchool, but I've been grappling with how to take the week of action and make it mean more in my current education landscape #HipHopEd
Yesterday in the middle of a lesson one of my girls just took over. It was about black lives matter and black history. She got up and taught for a half hour. I learned so much from her about better ways to reach the class. Super inspiring moment! #HipHopEd
One thing I’m working on practicing with #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool is standing up for my students in the moment of adversity. There are sometimes teachers say things and it catches me off guard in that moment and I follow up but I want to address it IN THAT MOMENT! #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd(ucators) must build relationships & collaborate with their Black students and the community to understand how curriculum can be expanded to be relevant to the community #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool
#BlackLivesMatterAtSchool is an opportunity for educators to expand the curriculum to include issues that affect the lives of their Black students #HipHopEd
Educators must support the elimination of zero tolerance policies in their schools & teach their students about how these policies affect lives beyond school #HipHopEd
Heck yeah! I have a ton of students who are organizing a school-wide wearing of hoodies on Friday in honor of Trayvon, though it's technically against dress code, as a form of silent protest. So proud! #HipHopEd
Glad you posted this. #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool is not just an urban school issue. Black kids in the suburbs are feeling the impacts of race & racism as well. #HipHopEd
The circumstances that plague our children in many of the communities they live in create a profile that is used against them in school #HipHopEd#BlackLivesMatterInSchool
Feb 4th - Feb 8th is also National School Counseling Week. A PERFECT time to tie in Counselors NOT Cops Awareness and Understanding to our community and school administration. #BlackLivesMatterAtSchools#HipHopEd
I had a teacher tell me that 5th grade shouldn’t discuss THUG because it’s too violent but this is the reality for many students and it’s something that should be discussed like many cases #HipHopEd
I think I've finally hit the racial battle fatigue in this work we do, and I'm finding it hard to think of creative and impactful ways to engage #BlackLivesMatter and #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool in spaces (schools/classrooms) that feel so intolerant at times #HipHopEd
Educators must support the elimination of zero tolerance policies in their schools & teach their students about how these policies affect lives beyond school #HipHopEd
Working diligently on the creation of studios in urban schools. Nothing shows youth they matter more than inviting them to co-create a physical school space where they can be their authentic selves, process difficult emotions, and heal #HipHopEd
In addition to @chrisemdin’s book, I would highly recommend @TWeiston’s book “Critical Mentoring” , @BLoveSoulPower’s new book and “Teaching for Black Lives” by Jesse Hagopian and Wayne Au. #BLM#HipHopEd
I feel like BLM should be talked about in schools because we're living in a time where there are many people that aren't being treated equally. History repeats itself, and it is our duty to teach the new generations the facts and help change this life we live in. #HipHopEd
#BlackLivesMatter can be used as a present-day connection to history content and literature. Students are growing up with this movement and it should be included in their education #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd today Trayvon Martin would have been 24 years old. Jordan Davis' mom is a freshman Congresswoman because she kept fighting on his behalf! #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool
BLM currently being discussed as a mode of information to cohesively serve as mechanism for Black students to relate how they see the world to curriculum is definitely something I’m interested in learning more about. #HipHopEd
#BlackLivesMatterAtSchool because we don’t need to fix a system that is not broken. It’s working exactly as it’s designed to. We must break it and build anew. #HipHopEd
What I’m experiencing is educators hiding behind disciplinary actions and Black teachers who have a good rapport with students to avoid building relationships with students. More relationship building and less suspensions #hiphoped
#BlackLivesMatterAtSchool because we don’t need to fix a system that is not broken. It’s working exactly as it’s designed to. We must break it and build anew. #HipHopEd
And #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool isn’t only reserved for urban schools. Many private schools need to include BLM in their curriculum so I don’t have to keep reading about kids getting dreads cut or suspended for natural hair #HipHopEd
When discussing #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool with pre-service students, I'm always astounding by their inability to connect mission of #BlackLivesMatter with their own "mission" to end the the school-to-prison nexus #hiphoped
At the end of the day, it isn't enough to tell our kids that black lives matter. We have to show them. They need to know that they are loved, valued, and that they all matter to us as educators. Can't properly teach a kid without letting them know how much they matter! #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd Watching Soul and the genius that was Don Cornelius who understood that Black lives both mattered and set the artistic standard #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool
One of the call to Action items for Black Lives Matter in School is hiring more Black Teachers; representation without a revolutionary approach to teaching will miss the mark #HipHopEd
Absolutely!! If the discipline is dolled out equitably it would be ok, but it's not. And the implicit bias of teachers makes it really difficult to seperate discipline from discrimination #HipHopEd
If we say that the purpose of education is to empower, we need to invite our students to sit at the decision making table. If we don’t empower them there, they see through the facade immediately #HipHopEd
Working diligently on the creation of studios in urban schools. Nothing shows youth they matter more than inviting them to co-create a physical school space where they can be their authentic selves, process difficult emotions, and heal #HipHopEd
Bronx teacher here as well... or they want to crown me like i’m some sort of savior. Nah.. this is home..
I’m there fighting with them and for them, not saving them.

Ready to say something? In his upcoming picture book, Say Something, New York Times bestselling author and illustrator @peterhreynolds reminds us that every voice — big or small — has the power to make a difference. Check out the trailer and pre-order at https://t.co/pfDOhs6d3b
It is purposely done to avoid making the connection between the profiling and stereotyping that justfies a cop from pulling a trigger and an administrator signing a suspension form #HipHopEd
As a preservice teacher, my program is extremely focused on social justice education. I see this passion in so many of my classmates! How do you see this mission playing out in your school? #HipHopEd
This is why I’m pursuing a degree in Dance Therapy. I want to offer therapy sessions in school. Arts therapy isn’t limited to the upper class if anything low income NEEDS it more. Black people always used the arts to heal, history has shown that. #HipHopEd
Agreed! School leadership & school boards must also be willing to evaluate & address biases in policies that contribute to disparities in discipline for students of color #HipHopEd#BlackLivesMatterAtSchool
Thinking that #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool means critical engagement with & deconstruction of status quo. Collectively fact checking 45 in his SOTU for example.
It’s more than adding Toni Morrison to reading list (tho that’s important 2) #HipHopEd
I'm really excite to hear this. Where is your preservice program? Do they also emphasize critical consciousness and culturally relevant pedagogy? #HipHopEd
We need to start implementing student ambassadors or advisory boards on these school boards so kids are at the table when decisions are being made. Some officials are often out of touch. #HipHopEd
I think I see a lot of students who talk a good game and seem passionate, but really believe in upholding deficit thinking, as well as policies and pedagogies that are saturated in whiteness and inherently violent to students who find themselves on the margins. #HipHopEd
Wrote and awarded grant on behalf of @BONDEducators for BLM in Schools. Looking forward to putting 50 black male teachers in front of young men and discussing our common experiences. #HipHopEd
And one of the most significant ways to do this is to allow students to have a say on our plans. They often pick up on things that might be a problem that I would've never thought of because of my whiteness. #HipHopEd
I serve students who have been over-diagnosed as special ed, told every negative stereotype under the sun about their capabilities and how they’ll end up in life. We wonder why people give up on their schooling; it’s not hard to see why when your identity is not valued #HipHopED
A parent recently shared a story of her teacher from 10+yrs ago creating a math word problem using her & her sibling’s names (he posted on Facebook). It brought tears to her eyes to read it b/c she instantly felt like she belonged #CRE#HipHopEd#BlackLivesMatterAtSchools
Hip-Hop artists are an awesome example of this. How many hip-hop artists are absolutely brilliant and have immeasurable educational value and are left out of schools because of the negative stigma surrounding hip-hop and the black lives that participate in it? #HipHopEd
would love to know where this program is, @TLikeyoumeanit
and/or to hear about other teacher prep programs folks know about that focus on social—and explicitly racial—justice
#HipHopEd
In reply to
@TLikeyoumeanit, @MissJennifer215, @TLikeyoumeanit
Yes!!!! Be a life-long learner, be willing to improve your practice, be willing to let students help you be the best teacher for them #HipHopEd#BlackLivesMatterAtSchool
I think any student who still uses "minoritized students" when (seemingly) referring to students of color is being failed by their social justice program, and that's totally no offense. Social justice doesn't equal anti-racist #LanguageMatters#HipHopEd
#HipHopEd "16 Shots" by @VicMensa is a war cry that must be heard, it connects "F&^k Tha Police" by @icecube and we can take all the back to "Strange Fruit"
I hope we can add Pittsburgh to your busy schedule! Thanks again for sharing your passion and brilliance with us at #CUESEF this past summer! #HipHopEd
I remember that @chrisemdin wrote an article on this a number of years ago, discussing the over-reliance of schools in asking brown and black staff to discipline brown and black students. If you love your students, you don’t need to outsource being real with them. #HipHopEd
What I’m experiencing is educators hiding behind disciplinary actions and Black teachers who have a good rapport with students to avoid building relationships with students. More relationship building and less suspensions #hiphoped

Law Enforcement would have to be trained and not be in the space in that capacity. It's like back in the day when officers with play ball through the PAL Police Athletic League. It's Context #RP#HipHopEd@chrisemdin
When I taught in an urban school system I often got the pity l👀k -along with unsolicited encouragement that I could find a better job. #BlackLivesMatter is the talk that verbalized the walk of urban teachers. #HipHopED

Exactly!! I don't need a pat on my back. I'm just want to show my students that people who like them are successful. Being from "the hood" doesn't have to be a negative.
Why I wish institutions dedicated themselves to anti-racist, decolonizing work instead of this buzzword "social justice" education that only ends up reinforcing whiteness in the end #HipHopEd
All education programs at Ohio State have a deep focus on social justice education. Because we are in a city, many of our placements are in urban schools.
What I hear in her response is asset (not deficit) mindset, as well as a recognition that students of color are indeed minoritized and marginalized. Social justice education is a key component of an anti-racist curriculum. #HipHopEd
They are both rooted in injustice but the focus for the calls to action are different. One focuses on the justice system and the other the education system #HipHopEd
#blacklivesmatteratschool means educators being willing to adapt and adjust to the changing demographics in their classrooms. It's not the kids its the methodology #hiphoped
In the context of this conversation about students, and specifically students of color who are also at the various intersections you mention, I wasn't sure why you categorized this group as minoritized #HipHopEd
Can we find another slogan that isnt connected to an org + assoc. parties that STILL actively silences+gaslights other activists/grassroots organizers, protects abusers, utilizes their visability to abuse folks +threatens ppl for attempting to holding them accountable? #hiphoped
THREAD: So for even further transparency, I am hearing that there is confusion surrounding how Shaun King sent out legal threats to Black journalists and activists with several attorneys cc'ed.
This is exactly how my situation went down. I am now releasing all of the emails.
As a student of color, as a teacher of color, and as a teacher of color teaching other students of color your response is insulting. This is my lived experience & my professional experience I'm speaking from, so your attempt to "explain" to me SJ/AR is proving my point #HipHopEd
We live in a time in history where our students are masters of social media and social networking. Let’s help teach them how to utilize this skill in efforts to fight against systemic racism. They are the next leaders and let’s make sure they are ready! #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd Just saw Dominique Morisseau's "Pipeline" and the first "rule" of young people was, "Hear us out!" How I wish r teachers would do that! #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool
This brings up a good point. Of course the hope of movements like Black Lives Matter is that they'll eventually outlive their usefulness. The originator of Black History Month claimed the same thing about that idea, and yet here we are. A long way to go. #HipHopEd
Dr. Cheryl Matias wrote a whole book about this nice interaction I'm experiencing here called "Feeling White: Whiteness, Emotionality, and Education" that I highly recommend to anyone interested reading more about real anti-racist approaches to education & the workforce #HipHopEd
Thank you for your support! It is great to see fellow educators standing up for each other. I’ve always hoped to be welcomed into the field with kindness and encouragement, so your words mean a lot.

#BlackLivesMatterAtSchool must include the language we use to describe students. Be wary of potentially coded words such as urban or minority. #HipHopED
#BlackLivesMatteratSchool taught me that just b/c I am a Black man, it does not give me the license to walk into any school with Black students and achieve instant credibility. Relationships still must be established. #HipHopED

If we actually believe that #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool, we wouldn't be separating black history into one month as if it were not an integral part of American history. Teach our kids that their history matters year round! #HipHopEd
Yes, we each that book to our undergrads and it's very problematic in many, many ways. There are a ton of scholars that would and have said the same thing. As long as OSU is still a thriving PWI, their "focus" on anti-racism is murky at best. #HipHopEd
The message was so powerful and real that I had to go see it 2X. I wish I could show this to my #teachered Ss and discuss throughout the semester. #BlackLiveMatterAtSchool#HipHopEd
#HipHopEd Just saw Dominique Morisseau's "Pipeline" and the first "rule" of young people was, "Hear us out!" How I wish r teachers would do that! #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool
They teach us about slavery in such a horrific way, they make us feel embarrassed. Creating an environment to allow folks to be disgusted at the enslaved people & have pitty & sorrow for them. No room for admiration or pride or desire to be connected to “a slave” #CRE#HipHopEd
We cant begin to talk abt restorative justice in edu spaces thru a "#BLM lens" when #BLM as an organization continues to perpetuate trauma and subject folks to further abuse after folks ask "where the money is?" AND while abusers and predators run rampant within the org #hiphoped

White educators must be willing to explore cultural perspectives outside of their own & listen when they are confronted with their own biases & disciminatory actions. We cannot understand how representation matters without understanding our own position in the system #HipHopEd

The plurality of #BlackLiveMatterAtSchool matters. It speaks to the multitude of stories of our Black students. Not a monolithic story or one of merely of sadness and trauma. But complex stories of joy, pain, love, sorrow, courage, doubt, endurance. #HipHopED
#BlackLivesMatterAtSchool is featuring Black authors in curriculum, quotes by Black scholars on the walls & centering Black youth experiences in classrooms #HipHopEd
Alas, I am a work in progress. Though I worked to craft my reply in such a way to say "here's what I heard" and not "let me explain this to you", it clearly landed flat. I apologize. I'm actively learning about the relationship between social justice ed and anti-racism. #HipHopEd
