Hello! I am a student at Kent State studying mild-moderate and moderate-intensive special education! I'm excited to participate in tonights chat! #kinderchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
This morning #kinderchat I woke up thinking I would get my run in early, but it was coooollllddd! So I checked the weather and found out it would be sunny and warm in the afternoon. Guess when I went for my run? #afternoon
Hi everyone! My name is Rachel and I am a student at Kent State studying Early Childhood Education and Special Education! I've been enjoying this spring weather :) excited for Tweetchat! #kinderchat#barbersclass
Krissy from VA. So the weather here has been back and forth. Today it was almost 70 degrees. The rest of the week is going to be rainy - maybe 1 clear day. Next week is supposed to be more springlike. #Kinderchat
Hi, my name is Hannah Barlette and I am a student at Kent State University majoring in Early Childhood. Spring is finally here! @barbersclass#barbersclass#kinderchat
So, I’m curious here… what made you (anyone here) decide to go into teaching? I always say I never planned it, it just happened. What’s your story? #kinderchat
I always (srlsy, ALWAYS) knew I would work w/kids. Went into Ed bc I didn't know there were OTHER WAYS to work w/kids. Discovered other ways, did them, somehow ended up in a classroom years later... #Kinderchat
I decided to go into SPED as a route to becoming a school psychologust and based on my experience living with a brother with disabilities! #kinderchat#barbersclass
I always knew I would be a teacher. Went home & told my mom on my 1st day of school that I was going to be a Kinder teacher, and here I am, loving every challenging second #kinderchat
I've always liked working with kids. I majored in education as an undergrad but wasn't 100% committed. Then after a few years I went back and got my master's and certification and it took 6 yrs. to get a job. #Kinderchat
I have always volunteered in classrooms and very much enjoyed it! I also knew that I wanted to work with kids, so going for Early Childhood Education was the perfect fit! #kinderchat@barbersclass#barbersclass
I had originally decided to major in zoology. Turns out chem labs were not my area of expertise!! (lol) I decided to switch my major to another passion of mine that was to become an educator. I’ve never felt like I belong more in my life :) #kinderchat
I decided to go into teaching because of my brother. He struggled in school because of his learning disability and poor instruction from teachers. #kinderchat#barbersclass
#kinderchat I literally looked at my university transcripts one day and saw that I was labeled as an Early Childhood Major. I don’t ever remember declaring it, but I decided to just go with it. the rest is history, lol!
I always knew I wanted to be a teacher when I was little because my mom was a teacher and I loved helping her in the classroom. I love making differences in children's lives as well. #Kinderchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A1 : I could not live without rules and routines in teaching. I think they are the most important things to teach in your classroom from the very beginning. #kinderchat@barbersclass#barbersclass
There are a couple reasons why I wanna be a teacher but most notably dating back to K when I really learned how to spell one of my first words (apple) and how excited I was to get home and tell my grandma what I learned that day and show her! #KinderChat
A2: One thing that I don't think I could do without for teaching is technology! It has brought so many positive things to the classrooms, and helps students stay more engaged! #kinderchat@barbersclass#barbersclass
A1: I am not yet a teacher, but I think that in my future classroom an absolute essential will be a token economy system. Having used them w/ SPED kiddos, I have found them to be highly motivating for behavior and academic tasks #kinderchat
Q1: It is important to have an inspirational and encouraging attitude as an educator. Motivation is what helps students succeed. Teaching without this will only make the students lose interest in me as a teacher and their education. #kinderchat
A1: As a preservice teacher, one thing I could not teach without is my observation notebook. I use it to document students and their growth/progress everyday! #kinderchat
2/2 ... I remember how excited I was from that and I wanna make an impact where my future students will wanna do that with their parents / guardians from something they learn from me. I also love leading and teaching others #KinderChat

I think, the one thing I couldn’t teach without would be a quality classroom library as well. Technology is great, so are blocks (I looove blocks), but literature opens the door to so much more. #kinderchat
#kinderchat Q2- we’ve said what we can’t teach without- now what’s one thing you could totally get rid of and it wouldn’t effect your teaching so much?
One thing I could give up in my classroom is the docucam! It always lags and now with smart boards I can write on the screen anyways! #kinderchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
To all the pre-service teachers, I hope you can hear my sincere and encouraging tone when I say: you don't need tech, you don't need behaviour systems, you don't need plan books to teach little ones. You need children, and stories, and music, and love. #Kinderchat
Desks, I think it would be interesting to try and get rid of them and see how students do with other furniture and have more of collaboration learning. @barbersclass#barbersclass#kinderchat

A2: I personally do not like how much technology is implemented in the classroom. (Ipads, tablets, phones, etc) In a way it can be very beneficial, but traditional classrooms are something I have always favored. #kinderchat

A2: I could totally get rid of standardized tests! Assessing students throughout the year shows their growth, but I do not believe that standardized tests are accurate! #kinderchat@barbersclass#barbersclass
A2: #kinderchat I agree that we do not need as much tech! Sometimes it is nice, but studies have shown negative effects of screen use especially for young children! #barbersclass
A2: One thing I could get rid of and live without that wouldn't affect my teaching so much are iPads. I think we should write more and not rely so much on technology. #Kinderchat@barbersclass#barbersclass
We use tables in my class, and I don’t assign seats. Great thing is, they sit in different spots for different activities every day. Interesting how, because they’ve never been assigned a seat, they don’t think where they sit matters like that #kinderchat
#kinderchat Hi everyone, I'm JoAnn, a student at Cedarville University studying early ed. Sorry for joining the chat so late, but I look forward to seeing what other students and/or teachers have to say!
Oh do it! I have 3 big round tables which currently have dinosaur explorations on them and 2 small ones for one on one group work. We have so much room to move and we work wherever we are comfy. #kinderchat

A2: One thing I could do without in the classroom are the chairs. I want to teach K-3 and I think using different seating would be interesting. Students may be more attentive sitting in something more comfortable. #kinderchat#barbersclass
Yes! All of our supplies are “community”. I tried individual pencil boxes for one year. We went back to community sharing after about 3 months. #neveragain#InKindergartenWeShare#kinderchat

I have had assigned seats in the past for one or two of us, but (going back to me and planning…), they don’t stay “assigned” for long #IForget#kinderchat

Hi Hannah! I couldn't agree more! Chairs can be so uncomfortable and a distraction in classrooms. I have seen teachers use exercise balls and thought it was very interesting! #kinderchat@barbersclass#barbersclass
I wanna admit something... I love technology but I CANNOT STAND anything to do with digital documents. If I cannot get the document in a paper form...it drives me nuts! And I'm a millennial. #KinderChat
#kinderchat I think I could get rid of so much direct teaching. I feel like every year those expectations increase, but our kids could do so much more with extended time to play without my interference #kinderchat
So my activities will probably involve paper! That way Ss can take it home and hang it on the wall or whatever! Can't really do that if done on an iPad or digital device #KinderChat
A3: I like the idea of digital portfolios so I'm going to try to continue using Seesaw. I like that the parents can view their child's work, if they sign up. #Kinderchat#seesawlearning#SeesawChat
When I have my own classroom I think exit tickets is something I would want to do, we use them in one of my courses and I think it is a great way to assess students #kinderchat@barbersclass#barbersclass
A3: I love taking pics of the kids and having them take pics of each other. It documents their learning and offers a glimpse into their perspective too #kinderchat
A3: I haven'thad a chance to use RtI yet, but I will be using it in my summer internship and no doubt in the future as a SPED teacher and eventually as a school psych. Data is so important for tracking IEP planning! #kinderchat
A3: During my observations, I have seen teachers include natural, wood materials in their dramatic play area to allow for more open-ended experiences. I think that it is awesome and creates meaningful experiences! #kinderchat
A3: I am not yet a teacher yet, but I never used google docs in my classes until this year! I honestly like google docs so much better than word, and how it automatically saves your work! I will use google docs once I become a teacher! #kinderchat@barbersclass#barbersclass
A3: Not in the classroom teaching yet since still in college...but...I would love to use many forms of formative assessment. #kinderchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
Hi Brinkley! I have never heard of exit tickets until this past semester and I love them! It is a great way to assess students! #kinderchat@barbersclass#barbersclass

Our professor asks three questions normally at the end of class and collects them, that way he is able to see if we are understanding the material and I really enjoy them! Also a great way to keep our attention. #kinderchat@babersclass#barbersclass
Because live on an island, I try to make my sandbox reflect our beaches. I think it’s a great way to incorporate local nature into the classroom #kinderchat
A2: One thing I could give up in my classroom is the docucam! It always lags and now with smart boards I can write on the screen anyways! #kinderchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
Exit tickets are awesome! At the end of class (last 2-3 minutes)students answer a quick question about something they just learned in class and can't leave till they turn it in #kinderchat

A3: During my field experience I have observed teachers using a practice called strategic ways to have students answer questions. The students seemed to really enjoy the change of instruction. I will definitely use this practice to keep my students engaged. #kinderchat
Something I would want to implement in my classroom is reading logs! It was in a video for my class this week where students document important things about books they're reading for future use! @barbersclass#barbersclass#kinderchat
A3: teachers can create a “gofundme” type of fundraiser online for their students. Parents or anyone can donate. I will definitely use this in the future so my students have the materials they need in the classroom and then some. #kinderchat

Exit tickets are a type of formative assessment for the teacher and, with little children, a quick check in and conversation is a perfect "ticket" before you leave #kinderchat
I have donated to a few “gofundme” projects for classrooms over the years. It’s sad we need to do that to fund education, but I think it’s a nice way to use that resource for sure #kinderchat
I love that! One of my favorite things I have learned in my studies is how incorporating natural materials creates so many opportunities for learning! #kinderchat
A3: I also hid the car bucket because it was becoming an issue and many many many discussions and interventions didn't help. Kids now create their own vehicles and they've shown some real creativity #kinderchat
I used to take pictures of my students creations, but now I have them draw a sketch of what they’ve done. Some really love the extension, others you have to “encourage”. What I like about it, is it allows them to take more ownership of their work #kinderchat
A3: I also changed our outdoor exploration time to first thing in the morning. We spend 45-60 minutes outside two times a week digging, creating cooperative games, imaginative play, hunting, talking about our trees and rocks. #kinderchat
Last question of the night #kinderchat If there was one thing you could have in your class that you either don’t have now, or don’t have enough of, what would it be? #DreamBig
True!! My dad took my sister to Lego Land (I went with them) in KC last September and they had this thing where you could build a car and send it down the ramp. It was cool to see all the creations the other kids made! #kinderchat

A4: One thing I would want in my future classroom would be a humungous classroom library! I think it would be amazing to have so much different literature for students! #kinderchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A4: #kinderchat In my future classroom I would love to have a few animals! Animals can be therapeutic, and having Ss take care of them taches caring and responsibility that carries over into other activities! #barbersclass
A4: One thing I wish I could have in my future classroom is the time/support for more small-group and individual instruction. I feel that working with small groups gives you a better opportunity to get to know your students and vice versa! #kinderchat
A4: Pencils, supplies!!! Some of the classes I've been in for field experience always have kids scrounging around for a pencil and get nervous to ask for one. Nothing to be embarrassed about!!! #Kinderchat@barbersclass#barbersclass
A4: In my future classroom I think I would want more supplies to do fun activities with my students. My teachers in the past would run out of supplies for all students to use. #kinderchat#barbersclass
A4: more room. I'd love to have an area dedicated to clay, maybe like an atelier (sp?), and an area with mirrors for free movement and dance. And BIG WINDOWS. And a real garden plot. #kinderchat
A4: I'm not sure what one specific thing would do this, but more of a teaching method that would help me attune to the different learning styles of students to maximize their learning would be a great thing to have/have more of! #kinderchat
One thing that I don't believe that classes have enough of is school supplies! I come from a hometown that struggles supplying the students with supplies and many students come from homes that can't afford them! #kinderchat@barbersclass#barbersclass
