Hey #NVEdChat, so excited to host tonight, especially since this is the first Twitter chat I ever participated a few years ago! The best law movie is clearly A Few Good Men. Is that clear? Crystal! #nvedchat
A1: In #middleschool math, Ss internalized number sense for integers much better when I had them line up on a number line based on their views about various “controversial” issues and having them move up or down based on persuasive comments made by their peers. #nvedchat
Q1) Law-related dramas are popular because they appeal to our inherent sense of justice and fairness. How do you capture this fascination with justice in your classroom? #nvedchat#thinkLaw#criticalthinking
A1-It's the fact that they are related and have real world applications. All of education should related to students in some way...that's how you get their engagement in learning. #NVedchat
Hello #NVedchat! Andy in Reno. I used to be addicted to The Good Wife because it portrayed a real system with real people, warts and all. The legal issues were very complex and interesting!
A1: Mock trials are classic for bringing debates to life and making them relevant. The Ss taking a position different than their own seem to get the most out of it. #NVedchat
A2-It's allowing students to have voice that is key. Whether you agree or disagree is not the point. It is the conversation. Boom Mic Drop! #stuvoice#NVedchat
Q1) The truth is stranger than fiction. Pull in real life examples whenever possible. The only thing I remember from my college level grammar class is talking about how experts are called to court to talk about commas and syntax. They make or break cases. #nvedchat

A1. Depends on the topic. With science there are some cut and dry topics. We debate the discovery of DNA and inclusion of various parties. I sometimes use a DNA/RNA which is the better of the 2 nucleic acids. #NVedchat

A1) We are studying Genetics this month, so I’m having my kids read about gene doping and then giving me their opinion on whether it’s considered cheating for athletes to use it. I’m also asking them som other bioethic questions. #NVedchat
R1: a lot of my kids know I used to be an admin. They ask me disciple questions and how a school can do things. I always refer to the law as I know it for rules and regulations. #NVedchat
A2: Questions, questions and questions. It’s great to see them challenge themselves to form their ideas more effectively. Such a critical skill. #NVedchat
A2: Have students evaluate the effectiveness of each other’s arguments, use fishbowls (the whole class watching one group in action) before breaking into group discussions, and help them get in the habit of using and demanding evidence to back up claims. #nvedchat#thinkLaw
A2: In law school, I had to be ready to have what could be a 20-minute back & forth with my professor, ready for every, “based on what?” “says who?” “what does that matter” she might throw out. Want to help Ss hone their arguments? Allocate. The. Time! #nvedchat#thinkLaw

Purposely violating justice in keeping score Teacher vs Ss during a lecture keeps their attn for sure. They don’t know if they should laugh at my self serving mistakes or complain. #NVedchat
A1:I love teaching the American documents: Constitution, Dec. of Independence, Bill of Rights. BOR--we make Hamiltonesque raps to remember them. #NVedchat

A2) You mean beyond “He said, she said”? 🤣 I won’t let them start an argument with “he” or “she.” It’s either “I” or they have to use the other students name. Then I make them listen silently while their opponent pleads their case. #NVedchat
A3: Making disruptive kids dissect the why of their actions may help them to think deeper in the future...well, maybe once they are adults LOL #nvedchat
R3: explain how your behavior is a benefit to the environment of the classroom and how would you deal with this behavior if I were doing it an you were re moderator of the room. #NVedchat
A3: Interesting that we praise leaders & companies for being “disruptive” but punish this with our Ss! Prioritizing #studentvoice through authentic & relevant discussions on topics that matter…that’s the “disruption” we need in education! #nvedchat#thinkLaw#criticalthinking
A3: Most disruptive students disengage because your lesson is too boring, too easy, or too inaccessible/irrelevant to them. Grounding your instruction in justice & fairness gives you an approachable hook that will enhance student agency & intrinsic motivation. #nvedchat#thinkLaw
Q3) This approach is very low-floor, high-ceiling. If you can get them hooked at the beginning of a lesson with a little drama they'll be immediately engaged to try to share their opinions! The trouble-makers are always interested in all the angles! #nvedchat
A3-You always have to look at both sides. Knowledge is power and if you analyze the good and the bad, overall you will be a stronger person. Sometimes we are afraid to "go there" with negative stuff, but when handled correctly...lots of learning can happen. #NVedchat

We recreated the Nuremberg trial as high schoolers (yes morbid) but I spent hours at the university library reading personal accounts and journals. I still remember my surprise research. #nvedchat
A3. If they like to argue, then use that to your advantage. Have them pick a point of view and play devil’s advocate. If they see it as a challenge, they will rise to the occasion. #nvedchat#thinkLaw#CriticalThinking
A3: S: Mr Kiyuna can I [add something ridiculous]. Me: so then what happens to both you and me? The discussion begins... The final sentence ends with them in the office and me in jail. They give up. Gotta hear them out tho. Make it fun. #NVedchat
This is simple, but powerful @KierstenBasch! Instead of lectures on why the behavior may have been wrong, reflections on why the behavior happened to begin with builds metacognition and could lead to some powerful a-ha moments! #nvedchat

A4: Use real-world problem solving on problems that really need solving like keeping our schools safe, making college affordable, and solving problems for businesses and community orgs! #nvedchat#thinkLaw#criticalthinking
A3: A disruptive S more than likely lacks a gilter of some sort. Me thinking out loud d, making the connections, talking them through what they just did usually leads them o a good decision. It allows the class to understand the individual and have compassion. #NVedchat
With any kind of innovation, you have to take something and alter it. It’s breaking rules, going past boundaries, sometimes being offensive. It’s OK. Set some guidelines before and request feedback throughout. #NVedchat
A4-It's kind of already there...the application of #STEM in a project #PBL, but when you reflection and have discussion about it, then the deeper learning and #CriticalThinking gets amplified. Need more reflection and less regurgitation. #NVedchat
I remember there was an interesting debate recently on whether disruptive companies ought to compensate/train employees displaced by new technologies. Very interesting!#nvedchat
It’s actually necessary, I found, to remind Ss that engineering affects real people and people can get hurt. I tought CS. Seemed to raise the stakes of cold coding. #NVedchat
A4: What is the price of freedom? Using wrongful conviction data, students can use basic multiplication to logarithmic functions to make persuasive STEM-based arguments on how much victims of wrongful convictions should be compensated. #nvedchat#thinkLaw
Q4) Knowing how to debate in STEM is more important now than ever! (Ahem #flatearth ) so many unreliable sources of "scientific knowledge." Hook your Ss in on the debate. How do we know what we know? How can they support their arguments with facts #NVEdChat
A4) Relevancy - The importance of patents (kids stealing other kid’s ideas) and lawsuits (importance of testing, improving, and testing again. #NVedchat
A4. In biology we discuss the fact that Rosalind Franklin was left out of the DNA prize (yes she died before the award). But we talk about her treatment during the rush to find the structure. We also looked at parenting genes (BRCA) and genetic editing. #NVedchat

Loving this @DanKos3 ! This takes your typical #WomensHistoryMonth biography-style lesson to ridiculously engaging and rigorous level, forcing Ss to ask some powerful questions. This is awesome! #nvedchat

@HowardKiyuna: There's an @NPR story about engineers who didn't think about how innovations like the internet could be used for evil purposes...so now #SciFi writers are now being looked to because their worlds are grounded in paranoia. #nvedchat
#NVedchat#thinkLaw#criticalthinking#STEMed A4 I can think of one activity that will do wonders when it comes to a lesson of being sensitive to scenarios and different perspectives. "Mikado Sticks". Might cultivate empathy too.
Friends, please consider joining @averyteach on Wednesday at 10:00 pm EST (That should be 7:00 pm for those of you in NV) for #IDedchat as we talk about reinventing schools. What would your ideal school look like? #NVEdchat
