Welcome to #globaledchat! I'm filling in for @hsingmaster tonight. Now that many of us are back in school/program mode, let’s discuss how we got ready for the year & reassess where we are now. Please introduce yourself and tell us your favorite back-to-school ritual.

I'm Heather Loewecke of @AsiaSocietyEDU tweeting from chilly NYC tonight. My favorite back-to-school ritual is to get new office supplies & clothes, just like I was back in k-12! I stop short of getting a new lunchbox, though. #globaledchat
#globaledchat please add a story about the value of being connected outside your school & country to this flipgrid. You will tremendously help my colleagues in a PD experience! Thank you! https://t.co/KllUhS0wJn code: GlobalEd
The first question is coming up! As a reminder, we use the Q1/A1 format and #globaledchat to help everyone track the conversation.
Here are the questions: https://t.co/XiUDiAbZ5T
Honestly we’re having a freak weather week! It’s finally warmed up to the low 50s today, but we’ve been in the 40s with crazy rain all week!! Sunday it was 90....I’ll be in NYC on Saturday! #globaledchat

So awesome that you’ve made an entire course! We started embedded current events into our 9th grade world history curriculum because it helped contextualize whats happening in the world and why we study history! #globaledchat
Q3: What new global learning tool, resource, curriculum, instructional approach, or assessment strategy are you excited to use/try out this year? Have you already tried any? How did it go? #globaledchat
Are Ss starting to see the connection, @jessicaraealt? Maybe history becomes more interesting when you use current events. I mean, it would help them see that social studies is SOCIAL, i.e. all about people, not something boring "over there." #globaledchat

I appreciate that emphasis on "social." There's a reason it's called that, just like SOCIAL media. Social studies is likewise about making connections. #sschat#GlobalEdChat

A3: We also host a group global learning blog on @educationweek, which is a great place to get some new teaching strategies and resources: https://t.co/jCnHAOEesI
(And, we're always looking for new authors, so contact me or @hsingmaster if you want to write!). #globaledchat
A4: Putting desks into a U shape or pods is my preference for collaboration & discussion. Moving desks/chairs/tables around for each lesson also signals that something different will happen and that learning is a process and flexible. #globaledchat
A3 I’ve been using video and curriculum resources from @goproject to introduce Environmental Sci topics with global reach. Like dam projects in central Africa to address #water issues #Globaledchat
That's great! How do you do #globaled at home? Parents are really the main influence on whether children are interested in the world and participatory in civics. Share some parenting tips, @JeremyDBond ! #globaledchat
A4? Resourcesfrom @YaleE360 cover #science topics with a global reach. Putting diverse researchers in front of Ss helps to build commonality #Globaledchat
A4: We have a library-like main learning lab set up with two classroom offshoots. It means that a large majority of the room are grouped around whiteboard tables, Ts & Ss collaborating. Lots of free movement among everyone #globaledchat
Q5: How will you develop your own global competence this year (e.g., travel, learn a language, read an international newspaper, get more training, etc.)? #globaledchat
If you check out @parlayideas and choose the sustainable development goals, you’ll be able to access them. They are guides for discussions. #globaledchat
A5: I am trying to read more int'l news to stay abreast of world events. I also plan to read more about educational systems abroad. And, I am getting up-to-speed on civics education policy & practices in the US, especially as we have an election in a couple weeks. #globaledchat
A5: I am DYING to go overseas again, I have had opps in China as well as UAE, but I just would like my kids to be a bit older. I wish there were some teacher/family travel opps I could connect with #globaledchat

I think it starts with being engaged ourselves, and sharing with our kids about the national/global issues we're engaged with. On a car ride I spoke about the midterms. I tried not to lecture. ;) #GlobalEdChat

How do you practically "create a classroom of inquiry"? Please share some tips in case anyone is new to inquiry-based instruction. @kmurfitt1#globaledchat
Q6: How will you engage partners (e.g., youth, colleagues, students’ parents, or community organizations) to advance your global learning goals for the year? #globaledchat
A5 The problems we face while studying env sci issues have global reach. The solutions that will be reached can only be arrived at when we bring people from diverse cultures together. Seeing other’s problems matter. #Globaledchat
A6: Continue to promote & grow our Global Issues class (we do it on a drop-in basis & it keeps growing! We are running out of space :) We also want to deepen our Sri Lanka Skype experience to cover civics in both countries #globaledchat
Aha, I think I understand: you mean roundtables, like discussions, not circular tables! Ha! Good resource, nonetheless. I now know about @parlayideas. #globaledchat@kmurfitt1

I'd love to be engaged as a parent beyond hearing from my kid what they're learning about. Share online the accomplishments of your classes toward global goals and encourage families to share on their own platforms. #GlobalEdChat A6
Q6: How will you engage partners (e.g., youth, colleagues, students’ parents, or community organizations) to advance your global learning goals for the year? #globaledchat
A6: I may have found my new #globaled director, a passionate teacher willing to use some of her free time to support teachers. Empowering her instead of doing it all myself will be such a huge advancement for Gimnasio Los Caobos! #GlobalEdChat
Q6: How will you engage partners (e.g., youth, colleagues, students’ parents, or community organizations) to advance your global learning goals for the year? #globaledchat
I’m super late to the chat. Hi my name is Jazmine. My favorite back to school ritual in my class is hot gluing labels. Icebreaker activities with colleagues is another favorite ritual. #Globaledchat
A7: Educators can just get started! They don't have to be experts on #PBL or current events or global issues. Learn with the youth, as global competence is a life-long process. #globaledchat
Wow @sarahyogidds! Is your class an elective or afterschool program? Sounds like there is a lot of interest! Maybe the Ss will create a cross-cultural project together (?). #globaledchat
A6: Continue to promote & grow our Global Issues class (we do it on a drop-in basis & it keeps growing! We are running out of space :) We also want to deepen our Sri Lanka Skype experience to cover civics in both countries #globaledchat
A1: Working at an IB school provides a framework where students are learning in an environment that truly fosters global mindedness. I’m learning the process but I want to connect my scholars to pen pals from another country this year. #Globaledchat
It is an interdisciplinary ELA/SS course. We just try to make options that our at-risk, nontraditional learners will want to engage in. #globaledchat Yes, I am hoping that will be an outcome
Hi @Harris_J27! Welcome to the chat. I think you are an organizer after my own heart (gotta love labels and a glue gun!). Tell us more about how you plan to develop global competence in your students, or yourself, this year. #globaledchat

Our time is up! Thanks for sharing your goals, strategies, & resources for the year. Here’s to another great year of global learning!
Next week, we're switching it up! #globaledchat will join w/#earlylang on Wed. at 8pm ET to discuss global education & early language learners.
I’m not sure yet but I sense I have to let go of my US lens more fully. I’m getting a lot of “that’s just Colombian culture” responses around what I consider unacceptable (sexist) behavior from boys toward girls... trying to figure out how to address it. #globaledchat
My school was created for Ss in my county to earn their HS diploma from their high school, but do it through an alternative learning model that emphasized interdisc. learning, flexible scheduling, & partnerships. So we do a LOT of things differently! #globaledchat
