A1 - Many PEGs are similar from year to year, but some are new based on my changes in philosophy or based on the Ss' input.
Procedures Expectations Guidelines
A1: establish my PEGS by getting going day 1!Kids help set the expectations and off we go! Class meetings and reminders as needed.
Procedures-explain, model, act out with students. Remind.
Next question coming up in one minute!
A1 always include Ss so they are invested
Modeling is so important!
Could you see Q2 before anyone else?
A2 Not for procedures, but for expectations and guidelines. Modify proc if Ss suggest good idea.
A1: I don't establish the major PEGs until I get to know my Ss. Need to individualize some PEGs so Ss know their boundaries.
A2, yes I think it would be good to include parent input as well--include all stakeholders
A2: S give input on a survey on day 1. Covers everything from peer relationship to teacher relationship etc. helps establish PEGs.
We personalize instruction, why not how our classrooms work? Not all PEGs will work for all Ss https://t.co/o8gKeQoTXc
A1: I don't establish the major PEGs until I get to know my Ss. Need to individualize some PEGs so Ss know their boundaries.
We send our classroom constitution home for parents to see.
A1- Last year I rewrote Ron Clark's Essential 55- completely changed my classroom
A2: Ss do set some PEGs for myself and Ss push to set some PEGs for me.
Gotta make it your own for sure! https://t.co/XutNf6p07C
A1- Last year I rewrote Ron Clark's Essential 55- completely changed my classroom
A2 teach procedures. we are departmentalized & proc. are fairly similar so Ss can quickly adapt to middle schools....
Like that idea-having Ss set PEGs for us. Might try that.
do you correct behavior as you see need during class time or reflect and create PEGS afterwards?
Ok, either someone hacked my account or we have some forward thinkers here. You're answering later questions already!
A2 contin....As far as Classroom some are from me and others from Ss
I would love to see that survey! Great idea 🎉
We talk about the Human Rights and then write our own Bill of Rights. It gets signed by the ss and parents then posted in the room
Consistency is huge!! https://t.co/9GTwbH970s
A2 teach procedures. we are departmentalized & proc. are fairly similar so Ss can quickly adapt to middle schools....
A2 My teaching partner and I do this whole group with Ss, so same in both classes. Also, I have some non-negotiables.
what a great intro SS lesson!
some behavior needs to be corrected during class, but time should be set aside for S reflection on behavior and PEGs!
Let's keep rolling! Q3 coming in one minute!
Take the opportunity for a learning/teachable moment! https://t.co/nCmLfo5f8c
some behavior needs to be corrected during class, but time should be set aside for S reflection on behavior and PEGs!
A2 procedures need to be in place so Ss can relax and know how to do this in the classroom. Procedures give the Ss security.
What I mean is if you have RULES now, how you could alter them into a positive spin.
A3 No-brainer-everything expressed as positive Dos rather than Don'ts
A3: avoid negative terms...say we will...we can! Avoid won't, can't, don't!
A3:instead of focusing on specific rules,my focus this year is S are a team:working towards best interest of the collective group.
A3 if the T sets up good procedures with a positive tone, rules will become naturally positive. Not don't statements.
Mistakes are a good thing. That's how we "Grow our Brains" Positive mind set.
This chat is bumpin! (Isn't that what the cool kids are saying now?) 4th Question coming in one minute!
It really does start with you and your attitude! I know that mine as a building leader matters so much! https://t.co/jdUoJXqYCA
A3 if the T sets up good procedures with a positive tone, rules will become naturally positive. Not don't statements.
A3- we only had 1 "rule" Rule#1- Never Give Up.I really don't like using the word rule-it has a neg. cono. https://t.co/FqXSzOKJxo
Got to learn to walk the walk...How to make Ss believe they can make decisions. Letting go =a challenge https://t.co/wanTlJkbQj
My 1 rule is Always be Kind.
A3 with the growth mindset rules should grow as Ss blossom
We need a moderator for 9/13. A great way to take a risk, add to your professional portfolio & collaborate w/ others! Let me know!
A4 The whole 5th grade has token economy. Fairly complex. Can earn money for "caught being good."
you said what i was thinking. Ss created their expectation using answer garden
A4: used to but no longer. Focus is on being the best you you can be and helping the "team". Reward is knowing you did your best.
A4: not really. I do be sure to watch for Ss doing the right thing when they think nobody is looking. I respond to that.
A4 I use class dojo Ss love extra credit points on tests
they simply love changing their monsters.
I do believe that a nonmaterial reward is something important. High 5 fistbump salute. Something that shows the S you recog effort
Caren from NC slipping in late! Hello all!
I agree. I call them expectations. Choose kind. Choose smart. Choose to grow.
A5 What do you mean by themes?
A5 whatever the students are into I try to use as a theme.
A5: When I was in the classroom I changed my theme every year! CRAZY! This year we are doing a school wide theme.
When Ss are involved in creating PEGs they feel a sense of ownership and understanding
A5: I follow the school theme. I build off of the school community, but I of course add my own flavor to it!
I have seen a variety of them from cowboys or fishing or monkeys. something that ties into your displan https://t.co/zSBwfgmu5z
A5 What do you mean by themes?
A5: no theme here. I like my room to be bright and inviting,my relationships deep and meaningful, but themes aren't how I do it.
A5 No theme then. Decorating/themes just not my thing.
A5 I admit I went through the themes...Survivor flames, Deal or No Deal. I suggest meeting Ss first to gain their interests
Pirates, jungle, sports, etc....this year we are doing a SuperHero theme for our Reading!
A5 (part 2): nothing wrong with themes and if a new T wanted to use one, cool! Just don't lose focus of what matters: the kids.
A4 yes tickets that a redeemed for things like free draw, wearing a hat in class, computer time, special seat, etc.
YOU are theme. YOU are the constant! YOU keep that classroom rolling!! https://t.co/q1xbwZaQNV
A5: no theme here. I like my room to be bright and inviting,my relationships deep and meaningful, but themes aren't how I do it.
A5 The only time anything looks cute in my classroom, it's because another T has kindly made it for me . : )
Q6 on it's way in one minute!
I will say though, the few times I do give a prize or a reward their fave prize is getting to trade desks with me for the day. A4
Newsletters home, call or e-mail something good during first week, need to start with a positive.
A6 Send class constitution home. Have "behavior" letter we send 2nd wk, Daily emails will mention big issues that crop up.
A6: constant parent communication through email. Send home proud notes when S go above and beyond.
Lunch parties are biggies for my Ss.
Experience at elem/secondary -themes more utilized in elem-stay consistent that's the main "theme" https://t.co/W0VHJzzknP
Just finished convo w/ colleague so she will help me know where things look good since I am moving my classroom.
Plants and fish are big in my room. Hard to go wrong with those.
That's what your PLN is for too!! Post the pics and make the adjustments you like. No hurting feelings! https://t.co/WRFZCRhYHp
Just finished convo w/ colleague so she will help me know where things look good since I am moving my classroom.
A5 Of course pirates for my theme but this year traveled with 4th graders to 5th so camping theme
A6: discuss them with them at meet the teacher nights or at sporting/school events. Be present for them and Ss!
Lucky #7 coming to you in one minute!
Honestly, these are my two favorite themes. Sorry to my AP, but we will be doing Pirate theme in 2017 https://t.co/3sHqz7AOZ5
A5 Of course pirates for my theme but this year traveled with 4th graders to 5th so camping theme
A6 I use , email and phone calls
pictures along with words posted around the room including bathroom!
A7 Class Constitution on wall. School rules poster are everywhere in our halls.
great to notice the positives!
A7: posters...quick little reminders on post-it notes...I want to start writing little messages in dry erase on the desks!
Ok, so I forgot to make the 8th question originally so the back ground is different! Don't pick y'all, coming up in one minute.
does your admin set up school wide reminders?
Our principal has an very long hour Rules talk the first day of school with each grade. Mid year too.
A8: compassion and empathy. Kids respond to kindness.
makes me cringe! https://t.co/FlwyxZhK5u

A8 Engaging work. Busy minds keep kids out of trouble.
There's a saying, can't think of it right now. Something about Fair doesn't always mean the same." I let Ss know this right off.
Me too. Especially the last 4 years when I was in 3rd.
A8: have a relationship with Ss. Know when they're happy or frustrated. Know what they're feeling. Work with them.
have to wonder if your Ps have secondary in their blood? That's an MO of HS admin.
He taught MS and was asst principal before he became our principal. Great guy otherwise.
Thanks everyone for an awesome hour! Cannot believe that it has run out already! Y'all have a great school year! See you next time!
A8 getting to know students personally, their likes and dislikes, making connections, SMILE😀
