Good morning, #EduGladiators! Lauren from NY - I teach 6th grade English and write about empowering students and teachers to live their values at school.
Morning, #edugladiators. I'm Brian. I teach middle-school English in Colorado where, today, I expect an umbrella will be the gladiating tool of choice.
A1 It means that we have to do more than exist, have to look for more, the next step, take some risks, challenge ourselves, be active not passive #EduGladiators
A1 Must be able to see past the desire for instant gratification and chase a vision into existence. This is how we help motivate the unmotivated student. #edugladiators
A1: Everything leads back to your why. If you don’t know why you’re doing something, how important is what you are doing? No matter what field, but especially education, we need to know the purpose for our mission. That ensures everyone working toward the same goal #edugladiators
Good morning. Latoya, ed leader checking in from beautiful South Carolina and full of good energy after watching the #RoyalWeddding and listening to this amazing message, “When love is the way...”: https://t.co/CNno8wgDRF. #EduGladiators
A1) If we have no vision we have no purpose for what we do. This career requires a purpose, so you know why you do what you do everyday! #edugladiators
A1: You need a direction and destination if your journey is going to be successful. Your destination can change, but there should always be one. #EduGladiators

A1 Developing “capacity” is not enough. What values are guiding us? How will we commit to those values? How will we recommit when we inevitably struggle and fail? #EduGladiators
A1: To me it means being okay with the status quo. That "It's always been done this way." Not believeing that we can do more and do it better. #edugladiators

A1 seeing the need for change from a colleague or within the system itself but not having to the vision to see how you can addresss that change- #courageousconversations#edugladiators
A1) Having a strong vision helps guide us in all our educational decisions. Something new comes out? How does it weigh in against our vision? #edugladiators
A1. Having an idea but not implementing it or trying it with no purpose will usually be dropped pretty quickly. It’s easy to jump into things and they get over your head. Take your time, establish the goal, and chase it. #edugladiators
A1 Seeing without visions sounds analogous to hearing without listening. Though stimuli are coming in, thoughtful, purposeful responses are lacking; going through the motions persists in the former cases. #edugladiators
A1) It's important to see beyond what's there; beyond the obvious; to envision a better, different way; Otherwise progress will be slow and stagnant. #edugladiators
A1. We must lead our lives both personally and professionally in a way that demonstrates a strong belief that results happen because of what we do or fail to do and not in spite of us. It’s about believing in one’s personal power to make things happen! #EduGladiators
A1) Without vision you can not see the limitless possibilities that can challengethe status quo and enhance the greater good.
Having sight allows you to validate the #StatusQuo#edugladiators
A1: for me it goes along with "Not seeing the forest for the trees" I can have a vision, but if I don't see the kids sitting in front of me then really what is the purpose? #EduGladiators
A1.2: also, those things we see in others that we cannot see in ourselves. I often think about how my sight with others often doesn’t translate to vision for myself #EduGladiators
A1-Fear may hold us back from trying new things. We have to help create an environment that allows everyone the opportunity to achieve their vision. #edugladiators
A1. Visioning is about having a clear picture of what could be, having a sense of what optimum and peak performance would look like and being able to communicate that to others in a way that they can operationalize it and work toward making it happen. #EduGladiators
A1- Being able to see beyond the initial moment you’re in to the larger picture is crucial. It gives you meaning, purpose, sets you on a path of aligned goals, focuses your work. #EduGladiators
Yes! Unfulfilled potential is a haunting thought! What would the world be like if everyone truly was optimizing their potential both personally and professionally? #eduGladiators
A2 we have to be open to other ideas, be willing to step out of our comfort zone, look for different ways to provide more authentic learning exper for our Ss #EduGladiators
A1: Personal gifts and talents must be shared with others, particularly with others. Sight illuminates the path for the individual. Vision illuminates the path for all. #EduGladiators

A2 We need to teach our students how to encounter an issue and then find ways to improve it. This means looking for resources and people who can help come up with solutions. #edugladiators
A2 We need to be thinking about how what we do in class will prepare them not just for tomorrow, but the future, teach beyond the content, know our Ss and provide diverse learning for them #EduGladiators
A2: Your classroom should have a certain goal you are wanting to achieve with your students beyond teaching the standards. What are you really wanting your Ss to walk away from this year being able to do? Remember your why as a T and that will guide your decisions #edugladiators
A2 Students, too, need to connect their schoolwork to their values. They need to understand why their schoolwork matters—to them personally and in the world. #EduGladiators
A2) We must plan with the end in mind. What vision do we have for student success at the end. If we don’t have that vision for the end in mind, how will we know of students will succeed? #edugladiators
A2: we need to have a vision for the classroom and we need to instill vision in our Ss. We need to allow Ss to have different visions for themselves and then create lessons that speak into those visions. #EduGladiators

A2) When one way of instruction/learning doesn't work,it helps2B able2envision other ways 2get2 our Ss. This is also true for our school. What can we do as a school 2 be even more awesome? Even more effective? Then be part of the solution 2 move in that direction. #EduGladiators
A2: We need to give Ss a voice. I can't count the number of times I've veered off the lesson plan because of something my Ss were curious about. It's the way we excite them about learning and challenge their thinking! #edugladiators

A2 Seeing lack of engagement but pressing on to get task done for sake of doing it. Operating with lack of ‘seeing’ how great things could be and how much Learning could take place when passion guides your work. #EduGladiators
A2 begin with the end in mind! Know where Ss need to be and then work backwards to see how you can allow for voice and choice of processes and products to get Ss to the end goal #EduGladiators
A2- Ss need to know and understand the larger picture, the WHY and HOW the learning is relevant to them. They need buy in, and ownership of goals. Ts need a to have a vision that drives all they do, a purpose. #EduGladiators
A2) I always try to model that Education is not about what grade level you are in. Education is about learning on our journey to become productive citizens, leaders, and world changers. #edugladiators
Me too, which is why it is hard to write lesson plans, to focus on the content/covering curriculum limits the opps for more authentic, a-ha moments in learning #edugladiators

A2: As an Art Educator, Observational drawing goes beyond what is traditionally seen - I teach my students to evoke ALL SENSES...which is why all of our “penguins don’t have the lookalike Pinterest look” #EduGladiators#K12ArtChat
A2: asking the students at the beginning of the year; “what would make this class the best class you ever took?” Might he a good way to get a sense of vision #EduGladiators
A2: as a SPED T I don't follow the exact same pacing guide as the classroom. I take advantage of this & truly see what my Ss need & are telling me to change up the lessons as needed for my Ss. #EduGladiators
A2: also asking your students now; “what would you tell next year’s class at the beginning of the year that might help them be successful with me as a teacher” could help as well #EduGladiators
Right?!?! We're meeting next week to pace the PreK curriculum...
What?!?! Why do we need a curriculum when it's supposed to be about exposure to new learning and play-based? #edugladiators

A2 Learning experiences that demand from teachers & students alike visionary application or creation of new understanding for novel purposes, rather than only regurgitating what learners have seen before. #edugladiators
A2. We need to focus on the essential tenants of learning, IMO. I outline these in my new book, Burned Out, Beaten Up, Fighting Back: A Call To Action For America’s Public Educators. Book is available on Amazon. Checkmy ideas out here: #EduGladiators
A2 Creating a shared vision with your Ss at the beginning of the term helps them understand the "meaning behind their perceived madness" (of the content delivery) and opens up a window to the future. #edugladiators
We can plan FOR authentic engagement by creating lessons that intentionally encourage students to connect the content to their own interests. Provide models of work whose maker was clearly invested in it. Allow students to choose their own topics for further study. #eduGladiators

A1: So often we take for granted what we see each day...like a habit...but to have real vision calls us to ‘see’ with open eyes, hearts and minds and to respond to the reality of the world around us. #edugladiators
A3) Individualized and personalization. Where students are all learning based upon their interests and their individual paths. Building the skills they need to be successfull. Not a one size fits all model #edugladiators
A2: It is important for students to see their education as not just a personal vehicle to success, but also as the tools they will need to build a better future. Adjusting their lens to view the world is critical in building citizens. #EduGladiators

A2: I think this is all about purposeful planning. We can give students great things to "do" but if they see no purpose they are just tasks. Purpose creates a learning experience. #edugladiators
A3 I would expect to see engagement, excitement, collaboration, problem-solving for both Ts and Ss. Truly ‘individualized learning’ for all. #edugladiators
A3 Ss who ask for feedback and respond to it. Highly engaged Ss who are able to self-assess and decide on the next steps to take in their learning. #edugladiators
A3: You see students working cooperatively, engaged in their own learning. There could be an increased noise level due to the engagement and questions. Ss are happy. Eyes twinkling as they are held responsible for showing their own learning! #edugladiators

Also; for older students; having them write letters to next years class with “words of advice” to help them be successful can help expand Ss vision beyond the year to year. See themselves part of a bigger educational picture #EduGladiators
A3. If students are able to articulate a vision for their future, they have identified their passions and likely have a sense of purpose. They would be able to clearly communicate how the work they are doing is relevant to their passion, purpose, and future! #EduGladiators
A3: Students see more than test/benchmark scores on the walls- they see college/career pennants, positive letters from their teachers and peers, their artwork, and their overall acceptance as more than capable human beings #EduGladiators
A3. If students are able to articulate a vision for their future, they have identified their passions and likely have a sense of purpose. They would be able to clearly communicate how the work they are doing is relevant to their passion, purpose, and future! #EduGladiators
Honestly? I see students grouped by vision instead of age. We match students up with similar visions; especially in the older grades. The problem is how we get there without systemic issues (racism, sexism, etc) getting in the way #EduGladiators social norms impact vision.

A3: Not just see but hear...Ss knowing and developing their own Why as learners, self assessing and reflecting on their success, collaborating with others, hanging up work they’re proud of, wanting to show off what they know, setting and resetting personal goals #edugladiators
A4 by starting with and continuing to focus on the relationships, knowing our Ss, supporting them, and working with them through the process of learning #EduGladiators
A3) Hard work is the common denominator. Respectful dialogue and collaboration are essential. Soft skills are evident. Those who become successful know they cannot achieve their goals on their own. #EduGladiators

A2: Getting Ss involved in creating their own learning goals will help them develop vision, instead of just seeing what we want them to do. #edugladiators
A3 Globally in the school you have a feeling of community (school pride or spirit)... But, what has really been done is Ts have motivated Ss by creating passion to come to school to find their purpose in life! #edugladiators
A3: You would see Ss&Ts asking questions, searching for answers, working on bettering themselves but in whatever way that looks like for that individual #EduGladiators#TCT18
A3. Furthermore, when we pose the question, Why is what you are learning important?, the responses of students and teachers would point to their passions, purpose, future goals and dreams. Instead, often I hear responses that simply say this is a requirement. #EduGladiators
A3: Student passion and collaboration would be evident. Ss would be grabbing at your sleeves, dragging you to their classroom to show what they have learned or created. Nothing more amazing than a passionate & focused elementary student. #EduGladiators
A3 my vision would be Ss and Ts working together to better each other. Both Ss and Ts not manipulating the system, but no bells for classes, students earning more than grades, and striving for more than what’s offere Ltd in class. #edugladiators
A3 When students define success for themselves according to their own values, school becomes a source of meaning and vitality. #edugladiatorshttps://t.co/sQ9DwyrLJE
A3 Students actively engaged in learning, collaboratively problem solving with peers, and using technology to display and share their findings. #edugladiators
A3 Tongue-in-cheek thought: I don't see anyone because their visions have taken them beyond school halls to interact with & make impacts on the wider world ;) #edugladiators
A3) I see students who can speak to their personal goals and visions of success. I see kids breaking down their own barriers and moving their learning out of the 4 walls of their classrooms. I see empowered voices and #passionprojects. #EduGladiators
A2. @ the HS level, students would not be preoccupied with grades/GPA. They would take classes based on their vision & not take AP classes they hate just for the extra points. You would see kids enjoying school! #EduGladiators
A1: Four types of thinking and communicating :
1. Vision
2. Planning
3. Details
4. Drama
Where you spend your time tells me a lot about you! @davidrock101#edugladiators

A4 For me it takes a lot of one-on-one conferences, truly listening to them & asking clarifying questions to help them define their vision. Also, Ss love to create vision boards! #edugladiators
A4: Ss learn differently. You need to be okay with them showing what they know in a variety of ways-PBL. If they can explain what they know within the standard, they should get the credit for knowing the material. #edugladiators

A4: Regular individual conversations with Ss. Leaning more towards personalized learning, with Ss setting personal goals and reflecting on and readjusting them often. Like @CalebCAllen said it’s not a one size fits all model! #edugladiators
A4) Include students in conversations. What does learning look like to you. What do you need to be successful. Here’s a vision I have for you, what’s your vision? More things like this need to happen. #edugladiators
Honestly? I see students grouped by vision instead of age. We match students up with similar visions; especially in the older grades. The problem is how we get there without systemic issues (racism, sexism, etc) getting in the way #EduGladiators social norms impact vision.

A3: smiling, happy, energetic Ss working at their own pace and at the level that is best suited for them. Ts are relaxed and doing their job knowing that what is going on is the best for everyone. #edugladiators
A4 find ways to help Ss set goals and become reflective, self-assess and be self-aware, we are there to support and model this for our Ss every day #EduGladiators
A3: I see inclusivity, compassion, respect and gratitude being lived out each day...in the context of meaningful, collaborative learning opportunities, where student voice and choice are cornerstones. #EduGladiators
A4. There’s no way you can make cookie cutter plans for this type of differentiation. Yes, we must understand our overall goals (state standards) but how we get there must be individualized! #edugladiators
A4. It's not easy. They need time to think. They need exposure to things outside of what they currently know. They need time to try things. They need time to reflect and try again. They need classrooms that look very different than many of them do today. #EduGladiators
A4: I think age matters. Kids change vision more than they change their clothes sometimes. We need to start with an exploration. As they get older things should clarify, but we need to be in tune with their development and capacity for vision #edugladiators
A4 I've grown partial to design-thinking processes like student-friendly LAUNCH cycle to make abstract visioning processes more practically navigable. https://t.co/PQajMf0JZ1#edugladiators
A4: This could/should be how we start the year! Ss are matched up with a T who they connect with and use advisory/homeroom to check-in and update on progress toward reaching goals #edugladiators
Yeah. Today’s #EduGladiators is making me think. Certain Ss have more capacity to dream/vision big because of how they are being pushed at home because of how Parents have navigated the system. Not sure how to impact that with vision.
A3: Student passion and collaboration would be evident. Ss would be grabbing at your sleeves, dragging you to their classroom to show what they have learned or created. Nothing more amazing than a passionate & focused elementary student. #EduGladiators
A4:I have students that frequent flyers to my office create vision boards and we focus on those throughout the year. Would like to take it campus wide.#edugladiators
Also. Is there a way to match Ss with Ts based on expertise around vision? Could that impact how students are assigned to Ts? Just something I’m chewing on #edugladiators
Further some of our children need exposure to communities that look different than their own. Having only limited experiences can result in limited vision. It’s our duty to open their eyes, hearts, and minds to all the possibilities! #EduGladiators
A3 Tongue-in-cheek thought: I don't see anyone because their visions have taken them beyond school halls to interact with & make impacts on the wider world ;) #edugladiators
A4) Students have to design their own path. Rather than be told what to do via a homework assignment or one-off task, they must determine for themselves what is required to reach their end goal. Learning includes action and reflection too. #EduGladiators#Projectbasedlearning

A4 I don't think you can rush it. Every S needs time to input to the shared vision. Every S enters with diff levels of trust unfortunately caused by society. Ts need to build trust to help them understand we strive to get the best outcome for each one of them! #edugladiators
Love the idea of Ss creating a vision board in their classrooms. Could gave a digital version that they carry in their pocket and Ts and Admin could ask to see it and check-in... #EduGladiators
A4:I have students that frequent flyers to my office create vision boards and we focus on those throughout the year. Would like to take it campus wide.#edugladiators
A4- Each Ss has their own goal path to mastery of skills and have meaningful approaches to their goals through self-designed passion projects in an innovation lab. Math goals through interior design or coding, literacy goals through research for engineering. #STEAM#EduGladiators
A1: There’s a difference between having sight and having a vision, like seeing a problem and then delving into its root and ultimately its consequences. #EduGladiators

A4. By first asking them what is & truly support them. Don’t put our visions on them! Everyone does not want to go to college & there is nothing wrong with trades (for example). Have Ss write it down like a contract & remind them frequently. #EduGladiators
I guess where I see things going is towards “learning communities” instead of “grades.” This is where higher ed is going. It’s a different paradigm. Again, I’m not sure how we mitigate social constructs that inhibit vision #EduGladiators
We certainly live in a world where this is entirely possible. @globalearner talks about Ss choosing to write/create for the world instead of their T. #edugladiators
A3 Tongue-in-cheek thought: I don't see anyone because their visions have taken them beyond school halls to interact with & make impacts on the wider world ;) #edugladiators
Yes! And we need to do that in a way where we don’t treat Ss like they are educational experiences for other Ss. Often times that is how it feels. #EduGladiators
Further some of our children need exposure to communities that look different than their own. Having only limited experiences can result in limited vision. It’s our duty to open their eyes, hearts, and minds to all the possibilities! #EduGladiators
A2: It’s easy to tell students how to operate in academic settings, a step further is hearing their insight on matters and aligning our vision with what they need #EduGladiators

A4. I also think we have to support them in exploration. My high school daughter is often worried because she doesn't have a set "goal" or "dream" yet and feels like at school they keep telling her to chase her dream or stay focused on her goal. #EduGladiators
Yes. With how connected everyone is; the school model is really outdated. kids can google anything they are curious about (safe search FTW). My job isn’t to pass on knowledge anymore; it’s facilitation of learning. That is a paradigm shift we are still navigating #EduGladiators
A2. Teaching the curriculum like a robot just to pass the state test. Not seeing the “big picture “ that we must prepare our Ss for the 21st century. Teaching is meeting the individual needs for all of our Ss! #edugladiators
A3 I see collaboration and student centered opportunities for exploration, connections to experts in the field, and motivation/curiosity/excitement #edugladiators
Exploring dreams/vision needs to be a part of the journey. Really this doesn’t need to be formed up until later. But current practice should be answering the question; what are you doing to explore your dreams and vision? #EduGladiators
Current conundrum on my mind: Tipping that possibility into probability, both in terms of my mindset & (arguably more importantly) the mindsets of the students I serve -- and their families, for that matter. #edugladiators
A3: I see students untainted by the world around them which we all know aren’t always morally/ethically good or right. They are operating in their own way of learning and navigating in their own timing #EduGladiators

Again: the problem is systemic. Getting there and out of our current paradigm still hasn’t been solved. If we did this today, you’d see the impacts of sexism, racism, homophobia in how those communities are formed. #EduGladiators
Devote real time to inquiring and realizing their passions for authentic projects in class, as well as ample time for self-discovery (genius hour.) #edugladiators
This is where Ts project their own emotional needs/wounds onto their students. I did this for a long time. Ts want to be the one to give a kid the “lightbulb” moment because that’s what makes Ts feel good. I’d rather plant seeds & let them grow at their own pace. #EduGladiators
Yes, also ensuring that students understand that success is not the same for everyone. So many focus on common "prestigious" careers and money that they forget about what makes them happy! #edugladiators
How many of us are taking what we learn on twitter back to our administration? How many are sharing articles with colleagues to keep the learning going? #EduGladiators something I’m chewing on.
A4. It's not easy. They need time to think. They need exposure to things outside of what they currently know. They need time to try things. They need time to reflect and try again. They need classrooms that look very different than many of them do today. #EduGladiators
