Today's : Humor is a great way to build community. How do you use humor in your classroom? - https://t.co/sHuT2ryWI8
what a great question. this may take a bit for me though.
how do you use humor in the classroom?
My Ss are hysterical. Sometimes I just need to relax and pay attention.
Cool. How you going Carlasaurus?
I cant imagine being successful in the classroom without the ability to laugh at myself.
Who needs coffee when there's Google Sheets to learn about.A huge thanks to for teaching me the ways of the force
Happy Thursday from cold,wet Massachusetts.
Brian, HS principal
Humor is another tool one can use to get Ss excited and engaged about what they are doing. Engagement = increased DOK.
She who laughs last...
Didn't get teh joke
Morning all Eric in NJ saying Good Morning
I try to put a comic on my morning message
A humorous story can sometimes make a dry social studies topic more tolerable ... heck sometimes we just need a good laugh.
Be unexpected. I am not "purple" but I sure did it up for a school event. Be able to laugh at yourself. https://t.co/1Zp3DvQX9T
Especially b/c the beginning of a teaching career is often filled with failure. You need to be able to laugh about it.
I walls try to add silly quotes in my emails to staff or memos to brighten up the message
hahahahahaha Thanks for the laugh between the coughs this morning! https://t.co/hUbECcvU9c
She who laughs last...
Didn't get teh joke
Have to have a sense of humor in administration. Only way to get thru the day.
Up since 3:00 - so I think I deserve a Carlasaurus Rex this morning!
Humor is the fuel of learning ->
Humor in a 1st gr clas means silliness. Making faces, talking in different voices, making fun of myself when I make a mistake.
If I get into full humour mode the Ss have to watch out. Also if I'm unhappy I stop being funny. they pick it straight away
So true! I must first be willing to "let go" and laugh at myself & my mistakes.
I teach MSers and I love them but they aren't as funny as 3rd graders sometimes
A little humor can also smooth over situations in the classroom. especially in High School.
Good morning fam! How are we this fine Thursday morning? david MS Principal from VA here.
Not just admins....we all need to laugh.
3am would be a Carlasaurus Rex Majoris
I love laughing, so enjoy it in my classroom.
No reason to be overly serious, learning is fun...
3rd graders are hysterical. They do some crazy stuff.
Laughing at yourself makes Ss like and LISTEN to you more
"Humor builds a learning relationship through the joyful confluence of head and heart."
Have to have humor -- so many days are Fellini-esque!!
Soon as I'm done with , I'm going to watch this with Gwen Stefani, and George Clooney ! ❤️💋 https://t.co/wrCqra5tsl
that's no fun! Feel better soon!
It also just makes you seem more human.
my jokes are beyond corny Have to make fun of myself. Makes classroom safe for Ss to see me laff at myself https://t.co/9tbUKpf7RT
yes, first graders love that
I always put cartoons on my science tests; a lot of times Far Side ones related directly! https://t.co/9A54kXnlze
I try to put a comic on my morning message
Good Morning family! Connie from NY here, checking in a tad late. Happy to be starting my day with all of you!
helps us get our silly on. Smiles and joy during a brain break = <3
Gooood Morning !! Love today's topic!!! 😊😂 Debby from NY
A day without laughter isn't much of a day...
My "back in the day" stories or "you won't believe what I did today" are usually good for a few laughs.
Good morning ! I'm very serious by nature, but I do attempt humor as a way to model taking risks/getting out of comfort zone!
Yes! Applicable to all ages: even my high school Ss get a kick out of the sound effects I always use in physics class...
Every classroom should have a hint of Vegas lounge act in it. Humor and laughter are the best parts of how we interact w/others.
Turning to humor helps me redirect a child without having to sound like a witch.
The 1st way to get away from the 'sage on the stage' is to point out that you dont know everything.
Good Morning ! Humor, good positive humor, is one of the fastest ways to connect. Never be afraid to laugh, alone, or as a class!
I cannot sing, dance, or draw. This does not stop me...or the laughter.
One of my Themed days is Tell a joke Tuesday
So true, and when we model this, Ss pick up on it and realize they can have fun learning too! https://t.co/7hnBbGVN9w
No reason to be overly serious, learning is fun...
Sorry...Depth of Knowledge. Thanks for asking!
Join our for at 9pm ET tonight with Greg Richards {} as our Guest Moderator!
Learning to laugh at myself...when I make mistakes and say something goofy...important for students to see/hear.
yes, it humanizes me, & builds trust
Like to get running jokes. Put S in fantasies, keep running with it. You look like a pilot I once met then keep asking about planes
And when we can laugh at ourselves, Ss learn to stress less about their own mistakes. Good modeling
yes, I agree humor builds relationships
I had a part in r play, The BFG. Lets just say it involved an air guitar scene to a Queen song. Gotta b able to laugh at yourself
Good morning. Ss like to hear and tell funny stories about real life funnies. Listening to Ss stories helps build bonds.
Ss that laugh together learn together. I make awful science puns everyday & the Ss respond back in kind & put new vocab to good use!
Yes! I do use humor to de-escalate situations...but careful b/c sarcasm can make things worse! https://t.co/L5N846KxfN
A little humor can also smooth over situations in the classroom. especially in High School.
Hmmm...I quite like middle school humor!
sometimes I deliberately say something wrong so they can correct me and we can laff about it
Hi everyone. I see we're talking humor today
If you think your classroom needs to be buttoned up at all times pls leave this profession.
Humor with the students is tricky. my go to is sarcasm but that's not always good. Know your audience 1st.
I'm also a huge fan of Bitmoji in my texts to Ts and replies to help desk requests
Humor is a delicate thing because you have to teach st that it's ok to laugh, but then they have to focus again. Tough 4 1st grdrs
6th graders have to re-learn to be comfortable in their own skin. Dorky teacher 2/bad jokes puts them at ease w/their awkwardness.
When I teach, I use a mixture of voices and imitations. Ss find it funny when the voice of Mickey Mouse explains manifest destiny
Good morning! One of my favorite subjects!
yes, not sarcasm but self deprecating can do wonders
Humor makes us human. Teaching should not looked prescribed
Sharing laughter and humor can brighten everybody's day ☀️☀️. Humor sets the tone for a positive/energetic classroom culture.
Laughter is the best medicine for the mind body and soul. Use humor daily-not planned-in regularly interactions.Laugh at self a lot!
Love the idea of keeping a quotable quotes bulletin board...posting humour quotes and encouraging students to do the same.
Me too! It's just different
absolutely..sometimes it gets taken too far and hard to redirect, especially this time of year.
that was a thing i had to learn early. You need to earn the right to use sarcasm.
Humor is effective for making Ss feel like a "team" with inside jokes, allows Ss to process information, humor brings joy
I love laughing with, and at, my students. They laugh at, and with, me. We keep it respectful, and it makes for a great learning env.
Good morning! Joining in 2 days in a row! 😊
Of course there are boundaries: One should never use or tolerate humor to disparage others. Model this as well.
Oh definitely! Laughter eases stress and makes life worthwhile.
Laugh at yourself first -- it's wonderful modeling lesson in humility.
I tell stories all the time in class. If none had any humor it them, things would not have gone well.
As a MS teacher I poke fun at the middle school experience/awkwardness ...makes it less stressful for kids to know they're not alone
yes, children love they are super smiley and happy when doing the breaks
A fellow T and I have been called Lucy & Ethel...but we are not an act. We love what we do.
Yes! https://t.co/lrTzflrgAc
If you think your classroom needs to be buttoned up at all times pls leave this profession.
I love when I am reading a read aloud and Ss get the humor in the book
You know what they say, Live Laugh Love. Humor is important...
Breaking out in song, or telling Ss everything we "say" we MUST "sing", is always good for laughs in 1st grade 😉
That. Is. AWESOME! authentic. https://t.co/E5Apn4pGIU
A fellow T and I have been called Lucy & Ethel...but we are not an act. We love what we do.
Exactly! We must remind our Ss and ourselves of the joy & wonder of learning. Early & often.
I often try on personas in the classroom. Maybe that's my theater minor getting a workout. It works though.
Have students bring in books they think are funny. Ask them to talk about why, and to use examples from the book to support writing.
My "classroom" being Professional Learning/PD, I use humor to lighten the mood when starting sessions/workshops.
knock knock jokes make Ss laugh.
So true! Humor connections students with teachers. It can be part of the cement of the relationship
Definitely. But we can teach that you can have humour without disparaging
One of my favs: 8th gr girl: I know they didn't have phones in 1800s, but couldn't they just use a pager thingy to get in touch?😂😂
Humor's the best way for school/district teams to get thru tough parts of K-12. (There are a few!) https://t.co/iYN0VBhkqV
oh yes! Just happened in my cl yesterday. Had to turn on my "serious" voice. Lol.
Great chat to start the day.
Hope it is filled with humor as well.
Interesting thoughts-some say never use sarcasm-I only use whenI have good relationship w/ S-maybe I shouldn't?
yes we are often like actors on a stage but at the same time being real ! https://t.co/jszruM9iZx
I often try on personas in the classroom. Maybe that's my theater minor getting a workout. It works though.
I I use accents that just don't work
Each teacher has their own shtick https://t.co/U5lDOPugLa
Every classroom should have a hint of Vegas lounge act in it. Humor and laughter are the best parts of how we interact w/others.
... and it is pretty low brow humor ... flatulence has a way of disrupting a class ... not a pretty thought but it happens
I NEED to use sarcasm. its how I talk. but curbing and properly aiming it is an important skill.
I always try, but somewhere in the middle of the book I get tired and give up lol
Good morning! How did things go yesterday? I was thinking of you...
And that its OK to laugh with someone, not at them. Tough concept 4 middle schoolers!
yes that's the key bring genuine,
Good morning humor helps to break the ice when used in a positive manner
first week or so you have to feel out your kids ... once you know them and they know you ... thats when it gets awesome
Start with a smile...grow from there ->
I use sarcasm too, but never directed at students. It's a fine line https://t.co/XAjp25O03B
Interesting thoughts-some say never use sarcasm-I only use whenI have good relationship w/ S-maybe I shouldn't?
Silly metaphors and visuals are memorable and can help students brains connect to new information
Every day occurrence in my room.. ugh! https://t.co/2nAs8nOahR
... and it is pretty low brow humor ... flatulence has a way of disrupting a class ... not a pretty thought but it happens
Modelling the ability to laugh at yourself is so important for HS kids to see.
Exactly. Ss are not target practice for sarcasm. Know how and when to use it, and it's a great tool.
I hear you on that https://t.co/puaxivCBtW
I NEED to use sarcasm. its how I talk. but curbing and properly aiming it is an important skill.
Very true! We have to help Ss learn these boundaries through good modeling.
I tell my Ss all the time, if you aren't laughing, you aren't learning...acquire the skills, but learn to love the process!
I am totally sarcastic with my peers/friends but as of late have tried hard not to be with my S's.
remind them as often as poss by joining in. I rotate as a partner in my stu math games.
Sorry whats the question/topic of today?
my mother is 90 and she says her favorite thing in life is to laugh. Hmm does it extend our lives?
you mean like when I greet students with G'day mate !
Today's : Humor is a great way to build community. How do you use humor in your classroom? -
i have a sock puppet who comes to teach grade 7 once in a while
you are 100% correct!! That's the tops in my class!!
I'd love to have a class Twitter feed and have a daily question like this for kids to respond to and follow.
Beautiful https://t.co/KSbmv1YOP0
my mother is 90 and she says her favorite thing in life is to laugh. Hmm does it extend our lives?
Hello Happy Cinco de Mayo - Ending class with a joke is a great way to launch the kids & have them look forward to the next class.
My heart hurt reading "S's R not target practice!" Sadly many T's do put a bullseye on S's.
Hey folks, lighten up...we're not going to get out of here alive! Might as well be joyful and enjoy the time we have ->
Doesn't quite have the same effect in my classroom. They all just Gday back
Laughter reduces stress, helps to build community and can help to make learning fun! 😄😄😄👍
Sharing fun stories w/ Ss not only builds relationships, but can also bring tons of laughter & promote a safe sharing environment.
My grandma used to say,"We don't have a lot of money, but we have a lot of fun." Thanks for the memory.
We had T who would shave his beard & come saying he was Mr. Elder's twin. Some Ss believed.. for awhile. Sadly he died in car crash.
Inexplicably, this delights me to no end! I love GREAT student engagement. :)
https://t.co/1qM3Q4ncSs
i have a sock puppet who comes to teach grade 7 once in a while
Oh Yeah. today is cinco de mayo.. or Cap: Civil War day!!!!!!
Good for you! I so cannot teach with puppets. Tried and failed! :)
Ah. Thank you. Humor is huge for me. No long term relevant learning without it.
I love those moments when I can get my students rolling their eyes at me. They laugh, and they're also engaged.
Right On Robin. It all adds up ->
Simply modeling happiness is important. Someone at a recent conference suggested this book. https://t.co/aOyuO0LVZX
That would be fun! https://t.co/v4K8ybkKQX
I'd love to have a class Twitter feed and have a daily question like this for kids to respond to and follow.
Amen...Enjoy the ride! https://t.co/piGLtx1J14
Hey folks, lighten up...we're not going to get out of here alive! Might as well be joyful and enjoy the time we have ->
Extremely hard concept to teach in general. https://t.co/YiHjRsBLIO
And that its OK to laugh with someone, not at them. Tough concept 4 middle schoolers!
I just explained to my daughter what a pager was. Such a funny conversation!
It does. Observing odd quirks about Ss and highlighting it w/out offending them is lot of fun. Ss love it too.
this... https://t.co/xJtLpmPt0e
Laughter reduces stress, helps to build community and can help to make learning fun! 😄😄😄👍
I also become other characters! Example when we did word study, I was "dr. Word" lab coat and all!
I can argue with puppets. never ends well
When appropriately used humor can help de-escalate a stressful situation
Still smiling, Friends. Have a great one!
We're all in this together!
hahaha you are on a roll today!
Ok folks. be well. I gotta go suit up. Be well.
yes! MS is hilarious! ❤️ it!
I hope you all have an amazing day today! Thanks for the bright start to my day!!
We had T who would shave his beard & come in saying he was Mr. Elder's twin. Some Ss believed for awhile.Sadly he died in car crash.
We're on a topic I use every day. that's how my class rolls
Seriously, let's have a humorous and impactful day!!
I just love this group. Thanks for the laughs. Ready to tackle my Ss!
Encouraging humor encourages learning, b/c we have to understand something WELL to know why it's funny. ;) https://t.co/hpf2st1j58
Goofiness allows me to model risking taking and failing fabulously. MS Ss are too embarrassed to look, yet they can't look away.
Sometimes I have messed up on purpose to highlight to Ss that I can laugh @ myself. Helps confidence building.
Have a happy, fun day everyone. Remember, laughter is the best medicine
use sarcasm w/o malice or negative tone, not related to S perf. Ss infer & learn non-verbal cues
Time to go. Go out and make someone laugh today
Chris has awesome words of wisdom! I learn a lot from him!
Hadn't thought abt the ripple effect or the positive impact on me. Just thought "my Ss need this". Cool.
https://t.co/BQ1dFqpMGr
Agreed! Like a breath of fresh air that is needed throughout a busy day of learning!
Don't tackle them too hard. Lol https://t.co/qbDhjojXE2
I just love this group. Thanks for the laughs. Ready to tackle my Ss!
Have a "lighthearted" day everyone! 😉
Go just below the knees when you tackle them Kathy. That's what i was taught
breakdown the affective barrier so that learning can happen
Every Tues. I wear a tutu all day while I teach. On my bday, the Ss wear tutus. Even the boys can't help but twirl
Carlasaurus Rex Majoris with coffee in hand, is ready to go out and laugh at herself. Have a great day everyone!
It happens. It's awful. But usually, it's by accident and not being conscious about it.
Live, love, and laugh... to start the day off!
My dad the football coach would say chin up!
Humor gets people behind your message! This sign at a local bakery made me laugh (and comply!) https://t.co/DzrBHJxT0u
I often walk out of teh staffroom saying, "I'm going to go and teach those kids a lesson"
Modeling it helps Ss realize that mistakes happen for a of is and embarrassment isn't necessary emotion!
Learning doesnt seem like work if humor exists. Every sub that matters deserves that much.
And we're both smart enough to use Twitter and as well.
I'm ordering this one too....my reading pile is getting a little out of control!
A 'crazy' dress up day...socks, pants, shirts, hats, foot wear...not all at once...can bring humour and laughter to classrooms.
Never let them see you flinch
Taught my kids that and strangely they learnt it.
laughter is the best medicine and smiles are contagious! Have a great day! 😄
Agree. Plus I pull legs of the smarter kids too so that the ones a bit behind can see the flat playing ground.
For public speaking skills, have each give a one minute speech on a random topic using a puppet.
Make that a puppet and an expresso
Hey share the stories over at voxer group !!!
Hey share the stories over at voxer group !!!
I always love these signs at businesses! I can't help but smile when I see them 😊
Confession-sometimes I threaten to sing songs from the 70's if students don't work.Barry Manilow keeps them on task
He who laughs last, has to buy teh next round of drinks
I am happy the kid knows how to hold a chalk using his fingers. Huge huge accomplishment already. 😊
yes I just did a whole unit on the 1950's they are so sick of Elvis and Buddy Holly !!! ( this week the '60s BEATLES!)
Have you seen the video where teh kid thinks the number 11 is teh pause button
...mine too! Loved seeing all those titles earlier this week 📚
FAB chat @ Feel bad can't stay need to prepare myself for a fun day w/colleagues & Students~ but looking forward to reading later!
Time for me to head to the rain locker. Have a great day everyone!
People gasp when I tell them I teach 8th grade. I tell them, "I love it. There is no other job where I could laugh every day."
I brought in a turntable & records for our 60's fair on Fri. Kids were in awe of that amazing thing!
I must fix the bit where my spell check recognises teh
Mt friends - as we head out to our Ss, pls keep the Ss in in mind. Many are a bit stressed heading to school today.
TYVM
Still quite literal at that age. Many HS age S's don't "get it" either. I say don't use.
100% understand you. I have been allowed to be a teenager for 30 years
My friends - as we head out to our Ss, pls keep the Ss in in mind. Many are a bit stressed heading to school today. TYVM
I'd like to put in a request for Copacabana 🎤
Love engaging in discussions where are views aren't all identical-Pushes my thinking-TY!
Love engaging in discussion where all views aren't the same. Challenges my thinking-TY!
the other day we were doing knock knock jokes and the S delivering the joke put his own name in, the whole class fell apart!
Shh don't tell people that
Some folk might try and do it just for the money
You do the same for me every day! Thank you, my friend!
Have a great day laughing with your Ss. They need us to show them how amazing the world can be. 🌍
Actually my real preference is Year 9. they remind me of between chicks and hens no-one ants to know the bird
Most powerful song to really get Ss working - I write the songs.Ss hate it... I on the other hand...
And for those who are sarcastic, apologize when you realize it hurt instead of humored.
Loved the question today, Annie! :) Have a great Thursday!
Loved reading the tweets from EST-- almost time for The Central Time Zone to tell us how they use humor! https://t.co/eoy5L07DOo
Today's : Humor is a great way to build community. How do you use humor in your classroom? - https://t.co/sHuT2ryWI8
You ROCK! Thanks goodness for humour and fun in learning!
Today Q: Humor is a great way to build community. How do you use humor in your classroom? - https://t.co/K3CDx84Aur
Good morning! K-5 Reading Specialist here. Glad 2B up bright & early to support my crew member, !
I use humor to make fun of myself in the classroom-If you show Ss you're okay with laughing @ yourself, they will be too!
Have to be a little silly to teach middle school. Create safe culture, no one is made fun of, but laughter brings you all together!
Since I'm a Reading Specialist, I love using silly read alouds w Ss; since I'm human, I make loopy mistakes & laugh about them w Ss!
When time permits, my Ss take turns reading jokes from our set of joke books; jokes energize the kids & spark enthusiasm
Channeling my inner Olympic sprinter to make
Love using humor in the classroom. Sometimes just to see if the kids get it 😂
Love joking with students- it shows you're paying attention to them!
I don't always know where to draw the line- can't reel them back after the punchline. Classroom mgmt is not my strength 😳
Creating a safe culture *brightens* to room for all Ss to have fun! https://t.co/P4dFqYjxjv
Have to be a little silly to teach middle school. Create safe culture, no one is made fun of, but laughter brings you all together!
Have a great day crew! Thanks for a positive start to the day, !
Specially HS kids. Going through the terrible stages of teenage years, they need this affirmation.
Creating a safe culture *brightens* the room for all Ss to have fun! https://t.co/P4dFqYjxjv
Have to be a little silly to teach middle school. Create safe culture, no one is made fun of, but laughter brings you all together!
Haha oh no! https://t.co/9Gi1IyyKtx
I don't always know where to draw the line- can't reel them back after the punchline. Classroom mgmt is not my strength 😳
Funny books make the whole class see the positive side of things. Here's our current title by Judith Viorst. https://t.co/nrUZL0QHlU
People love to laugh. It does make connections in the classroom. Students can relate to you through laughter
'Making it real' for/with our students can make learning 'real'...more enjoyable...fun!
. videos make the kids laugh. Those guys are crazy! Thanks
Whew... got a few tweets into the MST time zone.
Happy Thursday everyone!
Use humor to build relationships. We compete with everything to make learning memorable and meaningful.
Laughter is the best medicine and helps people create connections in groups, imp to teach your Ss that!
I will try to laugh about it, maybe in June when I have some distance from it
i.e. Use 80s L❤️VE ballads when teaching now that brings it to a totally different level for 😂
We make each other laugh. I have one that when someone is being silly, he looks at me, shakes his head & says "Kids these days."
Authentic laughter is the best kind of 'real medicine' out there, ! 😀👊🏻 At least, I think so. https://t.co/of0wB82LsT
'Making it real' for/with our students can make learning 'real'...more enjoyable...fun!
esp my own middle school experiences such as when I was walking to school, & dodging the pterodactyls... :)
"Just a spoonful of laughter helps the (insert subject area) go down in the most delightful way"
good morning! Coming in late. Oona from NJ.
Hi, . I teach MS students English, so making & enjoying puns is a professional responsibility.
I think as an ELA T, I need to seek out humorous texts, teach funnier works. Shakespeare's comedies need more attention.
Ss often ask why we can't study happy texts. They're a great way to teach esoteric concepts like tone, voice, etc.
Doesn't sound to me like you missed *anything.* What flavor?
I laugh at myself! Sometimes it gets awkward, so they start laughing, too. 😂😁
we do same or Ss share joke they heard/read on Mondays & Friday's in comm circle 2 start & end week on funny note
Recently used excerpt from 's One More Thing to teach alternate P-o-V. One of the Ss read it w/ such great interpretation
Sense of humour is a must in the classroom - it connects you with sts!
Yesterday in class, noticed 8th graders playing T bingo, using my catchphrases, verbal tics. Good chance to laugh at myself
I use essays from Food: A Love Story to teach rhetorical modes: argument, comparison-contrast, classification/division
couldn't agree more esp on days before & on state assessments!
Or it unites them -- groaning & eye-rolling together -- against me :)
I put on the queen's hat and a posh voice when ah teach spelling I get to say today is Wed-nes-day 😂
When you show Ss you have a sense of humor, they're freer with their feedback to you.
Teaching the kids when it is the RIGHT time to laugh! Also important to be able to laugh at yourself 😝
When the room gets tense, I tell Ss a fake laugh eventually gets you to start to a real laugh. It works! Soon we are all rolling!
Using humour can often be a useful memory tool.
It's often the Ts job to play the fool, to break the ice. Ss taking a long time to respond to a Q? Hum the Jeopardy theme!
Nice. Another lesson in POV! MS Ss tend to keep me more humble than hero ;)
it's easy to laugh with the kids about things that went wrong… Harder to not feel like a failure in the teachers lounge.
They're likely all gone by now. I have 4 sons!
Like Shakespeare's fool, perhaps our best jests hide sneaky wisdom.
Banana chocolate chip. Made with love at the crack of dawn.
Love Shakespeare's texts b/cyou can make funny what mightn't on the surface seem so. So many facets, even in dramas
I use "crickets" as the alarm for my timer and ask for someone to kill the crickets when the timer goes off :)
Cute idea to add humor to the classroom. 😊👌🏻
I bet because MS Ss are the age where relationships are the end all be all. I guess that's true for everyone, though!😀👌🏻
Reading books with dialogue speaking in exaggerated character as read aloud - also a must read BJ Novak's "The Book with no Words" 😭
Wait! Adolescence has been the 57 years of my life! https://t.co/5LqgtzL9q0
As a MS teacher I poke fun at the middle school experience/awkwardness ...makes it less stressful for kids to know they're not alone
