HSSocialMedia : RT CoachShiffman: We are a chat made up of Offensive line coaches around the nation! Please join us and have some fun talking the greatest sport in the world and the greatest position to coach! #HOGFBCHAT
Sorry I am having connection issues so I re-introduced myself!! Also if there are any 8 man coaches we have a weekly chat at 8 pm central on Thursdays called #8ManFBChat#HOGFBCHAT
We have an extremely important #TXHSFBCHAT this week regarding Player Safety and Coach Education. Coaches you need to participate in this to provide a public voice to the measures we take to provide the safest possible environment for athletes #hogfbchat#airraidchat#HSFBCoaches
A1: Everyday we step in some form or fashion. We incorporate steps in the grid drill, reach drill, 5 yard fight, etc...we keep it interesting, but are always stepping #Hogfbchat
A1: every day I expect my guys to take the first 15 minutes of PRE-practice and go over stance, starts, hand placement on the punch, and then walk through plays. #hogfbchat
A1: Oh God, there’s so many. Very blessed that our linemen are all one way guys, so we run through just about everything you could think of over the course of our practice #HogFBChat
A1: STEPS! have to work initial steps daily. Zone days we work IZ/OZ steps, Gap days we work down block steps. We work steps on doubles daily. We work initial pass sets daily (drive/catch). Vary tempo, vary drill set up, but always working steps #hogfbchat
A1: Footwork. Everyday. You can call it steps, bird-dog, first step drill, etc. this has to be done at all times. Followed by punch drills (focusing on keeping elbows in). #Hogfbchat
A1: first two steps of every block, reach, drive, and down all under the chutes with a board between their feet. Exploding out, thumbs up, and into live bodies.
#HOGFBCHAT
My guys go through down block step drill, a scoop step drill,a pull step drill and a gap hinge drill everyday before I ever step on the field. Older guys coach up younger. When I get out there, it's time to work. #HOGFBCHAT
A1) Wing T: T/TE/C must downblock, G’s: Must run/read all pulls. G/C: Must work together on nose combos. All: must work great fit position and learn how to legally hold. #hogfbchat
A1: Run game EDD-Fit, Fire, Finish of some variation. Pass game EDD-sets/stop charge/anchor. Drills must be relevant to what they will do on almost every play! #Hogfbchat
A1. Run step progression (boards) . Pass pro progression (on line sets). A drill that we added this year which was good for us is “knee drive” we start w/the knee down of the foot we want to step with and drive off the other foot to help concentrate on no false steps #hogfbchat
A1: when I was OL coach, I kept it pretty fundamental. Stance and then steps. You got to nail in steps. Shoots, sleds...i try to end it with a high energy drill. “King Kong” seems to be a favorite. 1 on 1. Gets them hype for team. #Hogfbchat
A1. Stance and start with all our basic steps worked. Down block drill every day. A pull and kick or pull to lb. And double teams. All the good wing t chit. #hogfbchat
This year I had a couple pass pro hand drills we worked everyday. When we were more run heavy I did first step and low to high hands on the board every day. #hogfbchat
A1) We do “Daily Must” were we do steps and pass pro fundamentals. DM is like if we only had 10-15 mins a day what drills would you do that are essential. #hogfbchat
A1: we do hip and ankle flexibility every day. We also do step progression every day. I like competing every day as well. We do PUP (pass under pressure) against the D to start everyday. #Hogfbchat
A1: Stance and Steps are still king. @OLineWorld65 reminded us last week just how important our stance is and it’s not to be forgotten anytime soon. Also early on, strike progression is a big one as @coachdustinfry displayed at the #LonestarClinic#HogFBChat
A1: 10 minutes of Hip Mobility *shoutout @lamobilitycoach
Working second step progression in run. And Pass Pro Christmas Trees (4 45 degree sets followed by 4 post sets 2 times) Once slow and explosive, once fast pace and explosive. #hogfbchat
Steps. Ladder progression (2ftx2ft) steps including t steps kick slides. Hand placement Double teams Combo. Pull steps 3 step vertical step head back #hogfbchat
A1: 1. Part, part, whole on one of our techniques. (Reach, down, base, pull) 2. Some type of pass set leverage/position drill 3. Maybe plays on cans? #hogfbchat
A1 Stance and Starts every day - boards and combos on zone days - pulls, down blocks, and gap combos on gap days. Sets, mirror and 1 on 1 each day for pass pro #HOGFBCHAT
A1: try to keep it fundamental when I was the OL coach. Stance, steps, gotta nail those down no matter how tedious it seems...Chutes, sled...I try to end it with a high tempo high energy drill. King Kong seems to be a favorite of my guys. Man on man. #Hogfbchat
A1: Just the basic footwork stuff. Step over the board, get on your track, hand placement is always a point of emphasis as well as repping the ever loving piss out of combos. #HOGFBCHAT
A1: "The Grid" (most call it bird dog) and Boards were EDD for us this season. Added the world famous "Trey pull drill" that I picked up from @CoachOrtizOL and MV half way through the season
A1. Love everybody’s answers! Step progression, punch, hand placement, etc. But don’t forget to have your centers snapping a ball during all of this. Get that 5th string freshmen QB to join in on the fun! #hogfbchat
A1:
1-stance
2-Form punch with partners at different angles
3-step progression (split the man, and accelerate the feet)
4- 4 eyes on backers 4 hands on down lineman
#hogfbchat
We call it Clemson Trey, Three linemen, allows you to work down, open, and skip pull. On sound, C blocks down, one guard open pulls, one guard skip pulls. Forces guards to work proper depth lest they knock each other out #HogFBChat
A1: I coach from the ground up. My EDDs start w/Stance, then feet - 1st step for each blk, then 1st -2nd. Can't generate MAX leverage w/bad ftwk. Coach queues are "Stick your instep!" and "Knees inside feet!" (I'm looking for triangle - ft-knees-hips)⚒️🐗⚒️ #hogfbchat
With our freshmen I start every day with board drill. Had some issues with competitive toughness and helped develop that plus set the tone for the day #hogfbchat Also like board progression steps, duck walks under the chute, and 1 on 1 vs DL in pass pro
A2: Depends on what you mean by hand usage. Proper strike targeting we use medicine balls in run fits. It really depends on what you want, but that’s something I’m looking into myself. #HogFBChat
A2: mirror dodge for pass pro. We do a hip sink and hand replace and drive drill for run progression. We need to have a video segment chat for these questions lol #Hogfbchat
A2- is this just a advertisement for @OLineWorld65? We use big med balls and hold them on our chest and emphasize hitting the crap out of them! Would love one of the bags from OLP #hogfbchat
A2: we use med balls prior to putting shoulder pads on. We also use handcuffs made out of belts during SPR drills to keep elbows tight and hands from flailing out. #hogfbchat
Since this is an offensive chat, very very little. We just bring the hands on standup dummies for the last two seconds after shoulder pads for five #hogfbchat
A2: in offseason use medballs for lunch, but during season tough to get from strength coach. Use shields and pvc chutes. Would love to acquire some @OLineWorld65 x-bags. Need to talk my coach into them. #hogfbchat
A2 for pass pro I worked a three punch drill where on hit 1 and 2 they punched hit 3 the punched grabbed and worked their feet.
I like using med balls for low to high run stuff. Also saves the kids bodies a little. I’d love to a a @OLineWorld65 version one day
#HOGFBCHAT
A2) We use specific hand drills for our OZ and then drive blocking. Also use 1 handed punch in pass pro, make sure they punch correctly. I use humans and a one/ two man sled. #beggedfor5man#hogfbchat
A2 Not a big fan of shields/pads because they aren't realistic for strikes. We do machine gun drill where we practice striking from 50% extension to 80% then resetting, while holding pad level and demeanor #hogfbchat
A2: We use smallest shield possible...used the linebacker forearm rips and it's great! Smaller shield forces OL into precise hand placement. Aim small miss small!! #Hogfbchat
A2: To emphasize violent hands early in the year, we will spend some time on the sled just punching and popping hips. As the year goes on, we emphasize the punch & hand placement on everything we do (drills, live go's, etc)it is also a priority during film sessions. #Hogfbchat
A2) Gator balls between the elbows to squeeze elbows and keep hands/face engaged on defender and not get called for holding. Also drive an unlocked lev-sled without lifting to emphasize driving through defender. #hogfbchat
A2: no special equipment for us when it comes to hand placement. The "Patriot" idea of "Aim Small, Miss Small" is a phrase you'll hear a lot. Just a matter of staying on top of guys to maintain the proper placement. #HOGFBCHAT
A1: Last year, focused more on hip mobility & stretching. Healthiest OL I've had in 10 seasons. Also, Drive-Catch (for run & pass) & driving the 2man sled. In summer, we do hip thrust with weight sleds. #hogfbchat
A2: we shoulder block because none of our guys bench press 400 lbs. We only punch LBs and tell our guys to get belly to belly. In the past we put a mat on the wall in the hallway and did punch drills in the off season, Always stepping and punching like Mike Tyson. #hogfbchat
A2. Start out down on their knees with a partner across from them with a hand shield, set back in thier calves and on the snap they "fire-off" and shoot their hands, and progress from there until in their stance and perform the blocks and shooting hands #HOGFBCHAT
A2: Good time for a shameless plug - recently invented and partnered with Rae Crowther to invent what we call the Shell Stick. Soft foam makes it easy to punch and helps coaches with rapid reps. Good for hand placement and hard punch
https://t.co/OIjHnwSJTw#hogfbchat
A2: call it old school but we really don’t use a lot of equipment. The guys I work w/ on the OL believe in working on realistic surfaces almost exclusively. #hogfbchat
A2) Gator balls between the elbows to squeeze elbows and keep hands/face engaged on defender and not get called for holding. Also drive an unlocked lev-sled without lifting to emphasize driving through defender. #hogfbchat
A2: I’m a fan of this one for pass. @DanB_60 is getting his hands and feet to work as 2 different units. I’m a big proponent of also having the kids use the P2Bar developed by Dave Pinto. @BigDuke50has used it in some of his drills. #HogFBChat
A2: I like the quick draw drill at the beginning of the season. I like using board drills and emphasizing hand placement on the chest plate of the shoulder pads. #Hogfbchat
A2: have gone away from hand shields. We use med balls for proper fit. Small rounded agility bags for full speed vs bag. Gives a small aiming point to work correct hands in a controlled block. Hate using flat shields. #hogfbchat
A2: pads that are about 15" or so across, we have some huge blue pads that every year I havr to explain that isn't a good pad for olinemen to use, wide pad = wide hands = not good #hogfbchat
A2) We have used med balls for hand placement and work other drills where we emphasize hand placement on certain physical landmarks on DL i.e. outside number. Pass pro work punch timing and placement in our sets using similar landmarks #HogFBChat
A2: I'm a fan of our OL getting fitted in on an opponent and doing a push/pull progression for run blocking and pass pro. But, this drill work is pointless if you don't emphasize inside leverage #hogfbchat
A2: nothing special in terms of equipment. Hand shields mostly, we’re only padded up once a week. Drills: post & punch using the 5-man, combos emphasizing our aiming points. We’ll film our 1-on-1’s. #Hogfbchat
A2: Hand shields for run blocking (hoping to get some bags from @OLineWorld65 in the near future) and nothing like a good period of birdcage with the DL for pass blocking (we do birdcage on Wednesdays - passing emphasis in offensive practice) #Hogfbchat
A2: Cinder Blocks... Just kidding no substitute for getting in someone's grill and working them over. Thins the heard too as you find out who needs to migrate to a manager role. #Hogfbchat
It’s all about leverage coach! I didn’t bench 400 in high school or college, but proper elbow to deltoid alignment and inside leverage can allow you to have them punch. #hogfbchat
A2. We don't use any equipment. We fit right on the body. We'll fit and finish in the run game. Magnetic hands for pass #hogfbchathttps://t.co/qXcuAQgDXr
Sled, med balls, resistant bands, hand shields. Med ball hip toss, sumo drill, punch the line, moon drill, push/pull, hand replace. #waxonwaxoff#hogfbchat
A2 I like to use med balls to teach/drill throwing upper cut punches on inside zone. Teaches them to throw 2 uppercuts and helps them feel the power from there hips. Helps them learn to create lift. Also good for teaching tight hands and elbows #hogfbchat
A2): Focus on proper placement of hands & striking w/in the #SKAQ Hands should be extended from shoulders. Thumbs out. I work independent hands on pass sets & teach usage w/in the run block but I don’t spend a ton of time on it. #hogfbchat
A2: One of my favorites is teaching my guys when to chop DL’s hands either on a bull rush, long arm, or a second move attempt. Very satisfying. Here’s my 10th grader using it #hogfbchat
A2: We work our Fit, Fire, Finish Drill. Want to use footwork and hand placement on a partner step 1. Step 2 same but this time power walk down the board on cadence. Step 3 All steps just with a rolling of the hips at the end and extending the arms at the end. #hogfbchat
A2 I saw a school that had jerseys painted on padded walls in their weight room. Oline kids hit a set, ran to the wall and got in there stance and fired off 10 strikes. I thought that was Awesome. #hogfbchat
A2: Love, Love, LOVE the OLP bags for hand placement & locking in on drive block. Turns wrists, "forces" elbow lock-in to sides. Really, I'm a sucker for all OLP products b/c I trust the research behind it. #hogfbchat
A2: i see a lot of people use Med Balls and hope to eventuallyget a couple but for now i use old school square shields when we aren’t in gear and we emphasize grabbing cloth all the time. When we are in gear it’s good ol fashion player on player contact. #hogfbchat
I think I found this drill on @XandOLabs last year. One man kick sliding, three guys holding shields. Shield dummies run in at different intervals and offensive lineman must kick slide and power step to get into position, emphasizing hand placement on each pickup. #hogfbchat
A2) I’m old school. If you can teach the boys the proper posture and how evenly distribute their weight, there’s nothing better than latching on to an old-fashioned breast plate. Bags are inconsistent in width and grip. Med balls sketch me out. #hogfbchat
A2: Want to use some bands this summer to address tighter hand placement and body position / leverage for lower body - great @WeAreAFCA tips I brought home.
#hogfbchat
A2: Also like a blind strong arm drill to fight pressure with pressure. Emphasize taking away the inside move with a firm post and an inside arm extension. #hogfbchat
A2) Sled, I really don’t want to beat the guys up too much but I hate bags, too much false response. I don’t want to beat the kids up too much so a lot of 1/2 speed things to focus on aim & muscle memory. Full speed in team session. Use Indy to sell them on the why! #hogfbchat
A2: Soft filled med balls. Smaller target than a shield, forces hands in thumbs up. Also easier for a scout guy to hold in chest and not raise it up for an unrealistic look #hogfbchat
A2: cont one year I challenged my linemen to punch and drive the sled and turn it over!! These guys killed the sled! They took it as a challenge to punch, drive, extend and flip that sled! A true thing of beauty! I almost teared up when they would do it!! Lol
#HOGFBCHAT
A2: Our biggest emphasis on hands is when we go through progression on the sled. We don’t do any “hand placement” drills. I believe you have to coach hand placement into your drills. Efficiency. #hogfbchat
A2: We use med balls for all our run game drills. We also utilize a leaning tower drill (shown below) to emphasis hitting different targets and tight hands for pass pro among others, 1st and 4th punches are incorrect. @debalsohard76#Hogfbchat
A2: I use both 6lb Med Balls for Team drills and boxing hand shields in my 1-on-1s. Always using the coaching queue/thought "Aim small, Miss Small" we also use @OLineWorld65 x bags for runblocking. #hogfbchat
I started a 6 on 3 drill on a 5 man sled so we don't step on each other 2 guys on every other dummy leaving the dummy 2&4 open we practice RUNNING that thing #hogfbchat
A3: every drill we do is high energy and up tempo. Plus we hit 1v1’s and inside run/team on a daily basis. Mix it up with defenders as often as possible. #HogFBChat
A2: We like the @OLineWorld65 shields, both the individual and double team styles in terms of punching and properly fitting our hands but there’s nothing better than a live DLineman, so as much work as possible versus a defender in a controlled rep 1v1 or dbl team.
#hogfbchat
Players are always encouraged to call each other out tug of war with tires, Have linemen line up against each other and try to push each other out of the ring. Also fun to have the other players to place their bets by standing behind the person they think will win. #Hogfbchat
Facemask to facemask Each player bends as low as possible. Hands by side. Five yard circle. HIT! Sumo rules. Low man quick hands hand placement more aggressive wins . #hogfbchat
A3: we have a compete session for every situation. Goal line, short yardage, medium and long yardage, first and ten. That’s our team. As far as offensive line, we do board drills, one on ones (which is favorable for DL), and inside run. #hogfbchat
We drilled setting up arm strikes from the DL while pass setting. We’d start with arms extended fit on a partner and rip through each arm and work to replace. Then we’d progress into ripping both arms at the same time and getting back into a strong set and press. #hogfbchat
A2)have a punch progression for passpro that use, any shield will do. Run game I’m going to use med balls this yr for any drill with striking. Hopefully down the line I’ll be able to get LB’s X bags. Also I’m also a big advocate of bodies for at least one day a week #hogfbchat
A3: We have “Pride Drill”. Requires 1 dice. Roll the dice... number (3 and under) is the down you are on... roll again.... that’s the number of yards... place the ball at the 10 yard line going in... 1s vs 1s. The winner GETS TO do push ups, up-downs, sit-ups, etc. #Hogfbchat
A3) We do 1on1 pass pro 3 days a week with DL. Also work some type of double team or base block with DL twice a week. @Big_twin84 is always down for some in week competition #hogfbchat
A3: Sadly we were a school that had most of our linemen playing both ways, not much opportunity for daily competition. Had a good one for early season where linemen started off in 2 or stances on a board and had to get proper leverage and drive the other man off #Hogfbchat
A2: cont. Does everyone that hates bags know how to hold them? The people overseas that sowed on the handles don’t know that we don’t use them. Hold that thing tight to your chest and it’s alright when we’re not padded up #hogfbchat
Q3: We try to find competition in all different things. Turned a cloudy day with some rain into a mud sliding competition. Sprinkler system helped with some extra water. #Hogfbchat
A3: Personal favorite. Tank drill or it's also known as Battle of Baghdad. Teams of 3. Goal is to beat 2 guys and tag the 3rd. Each guy rushes and then teams switch o and d. The hype is unreal. #hogfbchat
We had to deal with that same thing. We had two authorized vendors and then one went out of business. Really smart when you end up paying more because you can only buy from one place.... #hogfbchat
In reply to
@FISTFootball, @CoachMillerOL, @OLineWorld65
A4: Well, board drill is always fun. We like to split the OL up into teams and have mini pass pro/rush tourneys too. Gets heated and the guys like it. #HOGFBCHAT
A3: once a week will do a one hand/one foot up football toss standing in a circle. Works a little hand-eye & balance. A traveling bragging trophy from week to week. #hogfbchat
A3: one year I challenged my linemen to punch and drive the sled & turn it over!! These guys killed the sled! They took it as a challenge to punch, drive, extend & flip that sled! A true thing of beauty! I almost teared up when they would do it!!
#HOGFBCHAT recycled this answer
A1: Plus drill works all our steps each direction and can have 15+ getting reps at once downblock steps, outside zone steps, pull steps etc, double team drill on live guy holding a shield at his side , Toe board steps and finish. Kick jam cone drill #Hogfbchat
A3: boards, 1 on 1 pass rush is a big source of pride as well. I think one of the best times for competition is inside period, because the defense puts 47 guys on their side and you have to win anyway #hogfbchat
A3: Blitz pick up period or two, tracking pancakes and knockdowns daily and weekly for a winner, 1v1’s against DL and anything else we can compete with. We compete every drill. #hogfbchat
A3: Every drill is a competition. Two guys go at a time and loser has 5 pushups. Sometimes a relay cut block drill. Might be quickest steps, strongest push, most precise steps, most explosive, best fit. Even during the season as much as we can is a competition. #hogfbchat
A3) Used to have a Bedazzled Squat Belt that was passed from kid to kid. They signed it if they won it. We’d pick a drill or film category that won the belt for a week. #hogfbchat
A3) Inside run, we were fortunate enough to be able to go good on good with our inside run periods. Pass Skelly almost daily even if it's using scout plays. #hogfbchat
Top dog drill using dog pull toys. Tournament takes. 10 min. 4 pull toys. Lotta fun. Better than tire. Start on all fours like dogs. Bark get crazy. Give a leash to winner. #hogfbchat
A3: We will have situation drills at the beginning of practice most days or we will have Oklahomas to get the juices flowing! Also OL-DL pass rush at least twice a week! I tell my guys every rep you should be trying to either keep your spot or take someones spot! #hogfbchat
A3: I like to mix in competition in varied parts of our drills but we do 1 on 1 or live pass rush almost daily, mix in some 1 on 1 drive block occasionally and some "sumo" drill to work on leverage and foot drive #hogfbchat
A3 cont. Drive blocking competition called king of the mountain is a favorite of mine as well. Apply the techniques we rep to competitive situations so we are ready to rock on Friday Night! #hogfbchat
A3: we had a water squirting contest, dance off, etc. Low numbers keep is from much contact...but not from..mmbeing good and competing on Fridays. #hogfbchat
A3: varies by day, we usually do team board drills early in season, pass pro, I like working 2 on 1 combos vs DL. It's great for both sides. #hogfbchat
A3: weekly hookups with the varsity D-Line where we work full-line and one on one pass rush, zone blocks and sometimes some scheme stuff. We do it while the skill guys do 7 on 7. Then start mix matching 2’s vs 2’s and JV vs JV
#HOGFBCHAT
A3 At the end of practice on Wednesdays we do Bulldozer. Set up just like a UFC event... Undercard has sophs etc... Main card Has dudes early in the season. Main Event winner gets the strap. HC has done it his whole career... Kids go ape s*** #Hogfbchat
Towel Fight. Useful for all positions. Wrap a hand towel in athletic tape. Two men sit foot to foot and then one takes the towel from the other. BY.ANY.MEANS.NECESSARY #hogfbchat
A3: We do a version of the Oklahoma drill I call "meet your neighbor" on the first few padded practices. Most of our guys play both ways so OL competition during practice is somewhat limited #hogfbchat
A3 cont: another favorite we did in high school was Escape from Saigon. 1 on 1 in a circle with w running back. Goal is to tag RB. It's 30 seconds of full go until there's a winner. #hogfbchat
A3) Every Inside Run period is a competition in my eyes. Any Good v Good period too. 1v1’s are always good but I tried to back off those this season. Maybe 1-2x/week tops? If energy is down we get a step-over bag or board and do Cock Fighting to RE-set the tone. #hogfbchat
A3: We need to get better at this. Right now it's 1:1s and half-line goes vs the DL. need to make it more light-hearted throughout the season to keep kids engaged #hogfbchat
A3) We do 1on1 pass rush vs DL every single day in practice; some days vs younger guys if older DL is working something else but we usually get at least one day of good vs good in pass rush. We also finish Wednesday with 2 min 1s vs 1s and 2s vs 2s #HogFBChat
A3: EVERYTHING's a competition. One of my favorite - more of a Team Building between my dudes, is the "Sled Drag" where I have 4 harnesses attached to the 6 man sled. My olineman drag the sled 200 yds timed. How they rotate is up to them. They coach it - I run clock #hogfbchat
A3: A normal week will have 3 days of competition. We do alot of 1/2 line for our run game so that more kids are getting reps. The OL/DL do 1on1's at least 2 a week pass pro along with a group session. Full team 1's vs 1's . Conditioning 2--UR either winning or not! #hogfbchat
We compete in more fun ways. Fastest to bring me water gets 1 less rep of conditioning! We have 4 man sled, so I put them in even lines and see what side can turn the other side. It’s gets competitive in a hurry. #hogfbchat
A3) we love to compete in every drill, but you want to see real enthusiasm... 1 ON 1’s & put sprints on the line, that’s real incentive for 15-18 year olds #hogfbchat
A3 At the end of practice on Wednesdays we do Bulldozer. Set up just like a UFC event... Undercard has sophs etc... Main card Has dudes early in the season. Main Event winner gets the strap. HC has done it his whole career... Kids go ape s*** #Hogfbchat
A3: 1. Sled drive and standup 2. Fumble fetch 3. Perfect plays 1v2s 4. Pass rush pandemonium 5. “Mike Tyson “(once a season elimination board drill until one Guy is the baddest man on the planet) #hogfbchat
HSSocialMedia : RT CoachEch_: Q3: I’ve been blessed with awesome assistants that are willing to do things for the kids. Coaches 1 vs. 1. #hogfbchathttps://t.co/0MmqLayEXc
A3: one of the best things is when you get a good ol fashion tree drill competition. One on one OL vs DL is always a good time. We also like to have some fun every once in a while start a practice with a who has the best one liner joke. Funny to say the least. #hogfbchat
1v1! Any offensive lineman can call out another at any time! Line them up quickly in between yard lines. Winner drives his man past the line or eats pancakes! Sometimes winner will be rewarded with more reps, less reps, or more playing time. Always competing! #hogfbchat
We will also do a base/reach drill vs DL and sometimes being LBs and RBs down to work a combo/inside drill. Kids really get after it with everyone watching! #hogfbchat
Michelle Obama admits that Barack’s home country is Kenya & Barack Obama himself admits that he’s a Muslim.
This piece of shit MUST BE JAILED
#TrumpBudget
The strike stick is that pass pro one that allows players to use their leverage up to while practicing drive/catch. I’ll also be HOPEFULLY getting a kick board. #hogfbchat
Good on good 1 series to start practice each day in pads. Working different scenarios each day. Opening drive/ coming out. Red zone. 2:00 min drill. Quick whistle and stay off the ground. #HogFBChat
A4: That is put in place by the OC at beginning of the year! We as assistants know exactally what needs to get done and what to look for during games! Makes ir easy to communicate #hogfbchat
A3: I like to mix in competition in varied parts of our drills but we do 1 on 1 or live pass rush almost daily, mix in some 1 on 1 drive block occasionally and some "sumo" drill to work on leverage and foot drive #hogfbchat
A1: It really depends on the week for my guys. We try to work what will be required for the game that week. We will always work board step progression, fitting into a LB, and then from there it depends on what we need for that week. We go to skelly our time is limited #Hogfbchat
A4 two offensive coaches in the booth. One IDs fronts, other IDs coverages. Talk to the OC between drive with a tally of what we saw last drive #hogfbchat
A4: we have coaches in the box watching coverage and DB alignment. I position myself all of the way at the end of the sideline and see what we are getting alignment-wise in the box. #hogfbchat
A4: Always have one in the box at least and one on the field watching each play. We used Echo and iPad’s this year to help make corrections between series. It was a major help. Relayed from upstairs what play number and what was wrong. #hogfbchat
A4) 1) have a great OC. @CoachHellams 2) Each Coach was responsible for some aspect of film. Communicate with OC as freely and openly as you wanted. #hogfbchat
A4: in the option, each offensive coach has an assignment to watch on the defense. When I was in the spread, we would change it up where some games I watched our guys, and some I watched the defense. Depending on what we had a better feel for #hogfbchat
A4: We probably have more guys on phones than anyone else in the state. HC is main OC/Run Coordinator. He and OL Coach are watching the box. I'm upstairs looking at secondary, adjustments to formations, motions, etc. We're always talking. #hogfbchat
A4: I immediately pull guys over after each possession “anything you haven’t seen? What’s giving you fits?” While fine tuning what I see. Constantly watching defense and always in contact #hogfbchat
Q4. I communicate front to the HC. If they don't move it from the previous few plays then I'll look at backer technique. WR Coach looks at corner depth. Running back Coach looks at ends tech vs buck. We don't talk while HC is calling a play. Start talking after #HOGFBCHAT
A4: prefer at least a box & a secondary guy with boots on the ground & in the booth. Solid communication between coaches & between coach & players. #hogfbchat
A4: I am in box. I see and talk to field. DL coach makes any adjustments during timeouts and yells to field for me. HC talks for me when D is on field. #hogfbchat
A4: I’ll be honest...Hudl sideline and like programs have really changed things. We just spend every off series (defense out) watching the previous series to sort it out. #hogfbchat
A4) We are lucky, we have 2 angles from @Sky_Coach so the brains of the operation gets to look at the wide shot and I get a butt shot. No question anymore what the D is lining up in #hogfbchat
HSSocialMedia : RT CoachShiffman: Q4: How do you (or others) delegate your game time coaching assignments for watching defenses and how to communicate those ideas? #HOGFBCHAT
A4: As a freshman coach, my responsibility on the sidelines of varsity games is the hype man. In 9th grade games im the only o line coach so I keep my eyes on all 5 guys as much as possible. Rely on their feedback to help me coach them. #hogfbchat
A4: box watches secondary and far side. Try to get tackler or and penetration. Sideline looks for offense scheme. Communicate mostly after play call and/or defense on field. #hogfbchat
A4: Coach in the box helps with coverage recognition, force player alignment and corner depth. I’m usually good with identifying the box as long as it’s 25 to 25. He helps with that as well when I need clarification or inside the RedZone! #hogfbchat
A3: Hookups daily (Tuesday/Wednesday in-season) versus the DLine. Buckle your chinstrap and tape your ankles because you can’t hide in those reps.
#hogfbchat
At the school I was at last year I thought was perfect. I (QB Coach) watch the QB mechanics and the back side end on our runs, just in case of a naked slide. WR coach looked at Coverages and Routes and OC/OLine Coach watched the Front lines and run fits, perfect combo #hogfbchat
A4: Co-OC and I determine what I'm watching for while on the field. I have my Asst. OL guy watching front 7 (or 8) from up top. Any blitzes, stunts, etc. are relayed to me down to the field for adjustments between drives. #hogfbchat
A4: one in the box trying to watch b/s of D and anything lower guys ask about. HC/OC on ground watching b/f action. I watch dline and lb’s. QB coach focuses on QB progressions. #hogfbchat
A4) Delegated at the beginning of the year by the HC. However, if there is someone I trust then I’ll have them watch the far side of the OL & I’ll watch the near side. We also confer on blitzes or new looks. #hogfbchat
A4: with only 4 coaches on our staff, we just keep juggling as much conversation & input as we can. OL coach gets feedback from kids, though we always seem to get a 13 man box... #Hogfbchat
#Hogfbchat A#4 oline coach and RB coach watch front 7 WR and QB coach watch DB’s 1 asst charts the play and the front with coverage to review while D is on the field
A3) Sorry late to the party. We do typical 1-1 & group comp. We timed pulls- we want all our pulls to be fast & hoop comp. drills w/ DL. Want to do more this yr w/ winners & losers.
During work (bye) week we will do a few fun obstacle courses- coaches too. #hogfbchat
A4: I watch the F7. We’re pretty lucky. Our shop department made us a TV cart on wheels that’s waterproof, so when the kids come off we can hook up our Hudl sideline to the TV and make adjustments, see shades, coverages etc. #Hogfbchat
A4: I honestly think we need to get better at this as a staff, we are usually prepared well going into a game but need to work on delegating responsibilities in game better and communicating better overall #hogfbchat
A4 cont: after every series, OL comes to me and we talk our language on sideline about what we are seeing and adjustments if necessary. Looking into sideline replay this year, so that will help. #hogfbchat
A4) It’s been diff everywhere I’ve been. I’ll chart/scout whatever my HC/OC need me to. But I’m not going to rely on anyone else’s eyes but my own when it comes to Box Tendencies, Blitzes, Games, etc. Gotta see it/understand it myself before I pass the info to my boys. #hogfbchat
A4: All coaches watch body language. If a coach spots poor body language we try to get that kid out and fix it ASAP. It’s a little thing that leads to big things. #hogfbchat
A4: we have coaches in the box watching coverage and DB alignment. I position myself all of the way at the end of the sideline and see what we are getting alignment-wise in the box. #hogfbchat
We also have one iPad on the sideline for OL coach to show players. I have one upstairs for review as well. We replay drives and discuss as needed when D is on the field. #hogfbchat
Well, I waa the only guy in the box on my last staff. So, I called out coverages and personnel every time.
Would watch DL when it got away down the field from the other coaches on the sidelines.
#hogfbchat
Q4) try to split up and not give one too much so they can be efficient. One in box watching back end and one watching box. Those two should be able to come together to get front|pressure|coverage along with tackler. On field I’m watching the line and point of attack #hogfbchat
This year I’ll be in the box but I’ll have my QB coach and JV OC down on the sideline. I trust that between them and myself we can make any adjustment we would need. #hogfbchat
I am lucky to have two volunteers who have played for me in the past that help on Friday nights. I give one of them right side, one of left side. And I watch point of attack from behind. If they have a concern they bring it to me and then I take it to the Head Coach. #Hogfbchat
A4) Playcaller watching POA. OL watching box. WR watching secondary. Press box watching opponent sideline/secondary. We pick 4-5 keys per week from film that we must ID about defense (slants/blitzes, etc...) hudlsidline as increased what we see #hogfbchat
A4) We have had 2 OFF guys in the booth (myself & OC) & 2 DEF guys. I would watch the box and ID DEF front & relay that info to our OC & other OL coach down on the field who does a great job coaching them up down there. We also use @Sky_Coach for replay #hogfbchat
Q4: 1 of the biggest things is getting input from the OL. I may see something but they are the guys that know for sure what is happening in terms of alignment stunts games etc. I believe that if you coach them up we’ll enough thru the year they are my eyes on the field #hogfbchat
A3: once a week during kick off coverage the OL would compete in “fatman challenges” wagering breakfast burritos for things like jugs catches, blaster runs, Punt pass kick, deep snapping comps etc. gave them the chance to do all the fun things the skill kids do #Hogfbchat
A4: RB coach and I watch DL and interior LB. WR/QB coach watch perimeter & secondary. We gameplan Sunday night & determine who to attack by personnel & also formation. If they show us something different, we can vary to pace real easily to get them back into base D #HOGFBCHAT
A4: we have a guy in the box that tells us what he is seeing, and we make adjustments tbased off of that, issue is we play Ironman football so it's hard to do unless in a timeout or at halftime #HOGFBCHAT
A4: We has our Co-OL coach and QB coach up in the box this past year giving me and our WR, and RB coach information. Next year I might be in the box communicating down to the field to everyone. Whatever it takes to make us successful. #TheTeamTheTeamTheTeam#Hogfbchat
A4: Our JV OC is in the booth giving me d&d, and coverages, JV OL coach is also upstairs giving fronts, stunts, etc. So we'll have 4 guys on the same channel. Lots of info flying around. HC is usually right next to me or listening with his talk on mute. #HOGFBCHAT
A4: We have an offensive coach up top, if I need clarification on a front I will ask him to check it out, also we just got Hudl sideline this season, amazing! #hogfbchat
A4: I’m behind the defense on the field, HC (who was O-Line coach) is behind us. Have freshman OL in box to look for specifics. Lucky my players are really good at relaying information after a series. We work on the way we should talk on the bench.
#HogFBChat
Having a guy up in that box that’s on the same page and knows what to look for helps a lot. Or if you have two guys on the field watch from opposite ends #hogfbchat
We use skycoach and after each series it's my job to get with the OL and fix mistakes or adjust. If I see something we didn't during the play I relay it to HC who trust what I say and goes from there. He's good about listening so that's a plus #HOGFBCHAT
A4: Jealous of all these coaches using sideline replay. It’s still illegal in MA! We break our communication up based on front alignments, LB play, coverage, and where we’re winning in 1vs1 matchups to take advantage of it #HogFBChat
A4: One OL coach in the booth to watch fronts/stunts and far side of the OL, OL coach on the field to watch near side, OC in the box to watch certain areas targeted or secondary. WR coach looking at specific skill match-up and RB coach- signaler aficionado #HogFBChat
A4: Our TE coach is in the box is letting us know where the grass and the adjuster are.I’m on the field watching the front. The box guy always talks first and then me. #hogfbchat
A4. Have a veteran staff that's been running our system for a long time now. I'm in the box getting all the D alignments and where I think we need to run. HC/OC will listen to everyone and call plays that they suggest. #hogfbchat
A4 cont. me moving behind the defense has been huge to me. I know what we are going to do, so looking directly at the side I have the question on has been a game changer for me.
#HOGFBCHAT
A2: working the first two steps and striking a med ball that’s held chest level or striking shoulder pads. We’ll also work a fit and drive drill. That way they’re fit in and used to driving with their hands and elbows in the correct place. #Hogfbchat
A4: My focus in on the box and the POA for the playcall. The guy in the box & i have an ongoing dialog about fronts/games, etc. If we feel the need, we tell our HC/OC our thoughts...Having an ipad on the sideline with an endzone shot clears everything up! #hogfbchat
A4. Two coaches in the box- one for front recognition and one for secondary. OL Coach will watch for any movement (box will confirm) and the situation. We discuss in between drives and make small changes. Any major adjustments happen at half #hogfbchat
I’m superstitious. On offense I’m always toward our opponents’ endzone. When we’re on defense I’m behind the opposing offense hoping to be the first to greet our players after a pick six. #hogfbchat
A4: I like to call it from booth, so I only have 1 guy up with me to chart & watch front/stunt/blitz while I watch back end. @Sky_Coach makes adjustments easy. I let guys on sideline coach & signal. We talk between series about next series...move ahead, not behind #hogfbchat
The 2 Guys in the Box opinion holds more weight. Everyone on the ground contributes. The guy up top is the key, their view is usually better #hogfbchat
A2: callaway golf aid to work tight elbows and hands during fit and fit finish also homemade claw boards for pull push drill and emphasizing exterior rotation of the thumbs at all times #hogfbchat
A3: I love what I like to call the Leverage Drill. It’s two guys on a board facing each other. One gets “fit up” on the other. On the first whistle, he drives the guy. On the next whistle, the defender fights for leverage and then drives his partner. Keep it going! #hogfbchat
A3: with our limited practice time, difficult to have an in practice challenge. We do have 2's day. Where our 2's get 4 from 10 and in to stop or score on the 1's. #Hogfbchat
We use “hand cuffs” to teach hand placement and strength. I use a drill called “H.I.P.” drill “Hand In Place” which I use to teach the different angles I want them to use. It’s a great drill for me when teaching blocking 2nd level #hogfbchat
Had a blast and learned a ton as always! Appreciate you guys each and every week! Hope everyone has a tremendous rest of their week! Until next Monday! #hogfbchat
A4: having a veteran up front to communicate what they're seeing (preferably center) when they come off the field is huge! But I like to stand a little down field to get a better view of the front were getting #Hogfbchat
Most of the time, sideline man watches nearside and Boxman watches farside. Communication works best when discussed before the game, even practiced if possible. Often specify what want to know before a play so everyone knows what they need to be looking for. Workfast. #hogfbchat
Coaches, if you coach 8 man or want to learn some 8 man join us at 8 pm central on Thursdays for #8ManFBChat myself and @coachblosser are the hosts!
#HOGFBCHAT
A3: In practice competition is through skelly and combo blocks with the OL versus a D. We try to incorporate the best on best during team as well. #Hogfbchat
Facts of Life:
most important guy on staff is the OL coach
the next most important guy on staff is the strength coach
get a good OL guy that is also a good strength guy.... you have hit the football staff jack pot!

We’d like to thank our official sponsor GameStrat! They provide teams with the most reliable and advanced sideline replay system. Check them out https://t.co/zXhCj3fYlu@GameStrat_#hogfbchat
A:4 OC and I communicate throughout the game. During the game communication with your kids is key. Plays they like, who can handle who, and techniques. #hogfbchat
Thank you guys for all being here. I’ve been your host Tony Shiffman and I can’t wait for next Monday at 8pm CST for the newest installment of the #hogfbchat
A4: I signaled plays to OL so I was at los and saw half the play from my angle but thanks to Hudl sideline I was able to see whole play and make needed corrections. Also talk to guys about what they are seeing and make any necessary adjustments. #hogfbchat
A4) cont…That’s approach to film work. Game time it’s not my call but I prefer to be on the field. If I’ve got a set of eyes up top I’m good. Learning to communicate w the boys on the OL when the bullets start flying is priority #1. Can’t get anything done otherwise.
#hogfbchat
A4: I’ve been both on the field and in the booth. Pluses and minuses to both. On the field, I try to stand back as far from the play as possible to almost get an ‘end zone’ view. I take notes on each play as it’s executed and then compare notes with my GA in the booth before
Also coaches, I know we get in here and talk a lot of X's and O's etc but what about the other aspects of the game? If any of you have read Jeff Dukes book 3D Coach you know what I am talking about. Also what about a faith based chat as well?
#HOGFBCHAT
Sweet! Something you may want to do is instead of using “T or E” on diagrams use the numbers. Like “1, 2i, 3, etc.” so the guys can learn the shades & alignment. #hogfbchat
Been a fast but great chat, busy week coming up with state wrestling and parent teacher conferences, can't wait to talk trenches again next week #hogfbchat
A4: The OC (who is also the OL coach) and I are in the booth. I try to help out our HC (who is heavily involved in the offense) and OC however I can. Usually I get with our OC during the week and ask how I can best help. It varies by week in terms of what he needs. #Hogfbchat
A1: Steps under the chutes everyday, sled work (emphasizing hands and hip explosion),combo double teams (C/G, G/T, T/TE,), pull work (skip & trap), pass set wave drill (vertical, post, mirror) #hogfbchat
A4: It sucks to be in the booth and not have a role. I think it’s really important to have a plan for your staff, which our HC does a great job with. As some said, don’t just be a ball watcher. #Hogfbchat
A1 Combo drills. RT/RG, C/LG, LT/TE all work together. Right/Left Zone, Reach, Base/Combo vs different looks. Allows rapid reps and isolates a couple of OL working together to fix problems quickly. #hogfbchat
A4: We also have echo and when it’s working it’s great to talk through what we’re seeing with each other and our HC. We are in constant communication with our RB coach who coaches the OL and TE’s/H’s from the sideline. #Hogfbchat
A2: Don’t have a lot of fancy equipment so we end up just using hand shields or the sled just working on shooting our hands up and shooting our hips. Emphasize that those half to be in sync. Prefer going up against the DL when we can. #hogfbchat
A1: boards under the chutes gives us steps and level. Go to the sled and hit timing steps and hands. Put it all together with a drive and finish on the sled. Every day has variations of this. Footwork and hands are a must! #HogFBChat
A2: We use hand shields and sled pads. I like using bodies for teaching hands at first. That way my guys get a real feel of where they shoot hands. Different varieties of the same strike drills. #HogFBChat
For sure. I teach my guys of all sizes to “block with surface” when trapping. As long as they have profile of the defender, they use surface. #hogfbchat
A3: competition Tuesday! Hoop Sumo Wrestling with the DL is a favorite with my guys. Lock on and try to win the Hoop. 1 on 1 boards. Linemen do pat n go. Skill does OL warm up. #HogFBChat
A4: I really like @CoachHand here. I too stand back and watch POA. Our guy up top will watch far side OL/ TE. I get box count and watch for tendencies. My main goal is to find solutions and fix us first! #HogFBChat
