Q1 (see slide for prompt)
"Mathematics teachers are professionals who do not do this work in isolation" (@NCTM, 2014, p. 99).
Be sure to begin your response with A1... and also include #OCTMchat to link our conversation
Jacqui Lehmkuhl, honored to be vice-president of secondary for @octm. Also Math department chair fo Troy High School. My math soul is fueled by hanging out with my math peeps. Tonight it was with @ShirleyEldridg3@jmamer1@MrsArnoldPlus1 planning some PD for the summer. #octmchat
Hello! First time math chatter here! I’m Rachel Skilliter and I teach algebra & algebra 2 at Shawnee High School! The relationships I’ve built through OCTM are irreplaceable! #octmchat
#OCTMchat
Ann Howard from Piqua Junior High School here! I fuel myself professionally by learning from advice that has been communicated to me. #8thGradeMath
A1 I have witnessed/been part of some very different structures. I was part of a great grade level conversation this week but the time and opportunity was put in place for the teachers to engage. Unfortunately, time and opportunity can often be lacking. #octmchat
A1: In our secondary schools, we have data teams, as well as professional learning communities across schools. I have the privilege to be part of many of these powerful teams. #octmchat
A1: A school where I used to teach had a half day for students every other Wednesday and an extended day for teachers. We had meetings, looked at data, and truly had a sense of community. It was wonderful. #octmchat
A1: We’ve been intentional about scheduling weekly common planning time for grade levels @BRN_Elementary. I’m grateful for the support of our staff & leadership team for prioritizing this time. @KatiLMiller@ringhiser#octmchat
A1: some options I've seen/been part of include PLC meetings within the school day, common plan times for teachers of the same course, vertical meetings quarterly... #octmchat
A1) Our best collaboration happens in bite size pieces, 5 minutes between classes. Most of Team Math's room are in the same hallway. We also have the same lunch. In addition, our district has provided time in the summer for us to collaborate as well as curriculum days. #octmchat
A1 Every month we have an in-service which occasionally gives us opportunities to collaborate. I find the biggest time for me is in-between classes in the hallways.. reflecting and sharing ideas! #octmchat
A1: #OCTMchat In my building, we have time scheduled after school for TBT meetings. This is time for us to reflect on the student's growth and communicate ways we have reached them. Also, all the math classrooms are next to each other so we are constantly collaborating lessons.
Hi! Happy to be here! I’ve been wrapped up in blankets for two days straight. Right now it’s “warmed up” to 0! Grateful for my heat and shelter. #OCTMchat
A1: We use collaborative time in same-subject teams and in departments to share best practices, try new things and encourage each other to think outside the box #octmchat
Q2 (see slide for prompt)
"Developing expertise as a mathematics teacher is a career-long process. The knowledge base of effective mathematics teaching and learning is continually expanding" (@NCTM , 2014, p. 102).
#OCTMchat
A1 Teachers are able to collaborate every six days in grade level TBT's. Our building leadership teams (across grade levels) look at data to discuss in district meetings #OCTMchat
A1: At the district level we do a rich problem at our monthly K-12 meetings. Solving problems from different grade level at different grade level perspective is awesome! #octmchat
Hi, Jodie! Thanks for joining #octmchat tonight... I totally agree... @ohioctm
definitely has connected me to some amazing educators across Ohio and beyond! :) #OCTMconnects
In reply to
@BaileyJodie, @ohioctm, @HilliardSchools, @ohioctm
A2: Learn from other awesome math teachers who share and question on Twitter, listen to podcasts, read, constantly question our instructional decisions - is this what’s best for my kids right now? #octmchat
What a great opportunity to collaborate! I love that there's a structure in place for this! #octmchat What are some of the benefits you've seen from your grade level TBT's?
A2 Love these chats and scan any number of resources daily. I have any number of books but often don't give myself the time to read. I took time today to listen to a podcast left over from November. #octmchat
A2: #OCTMchat the current teaching strategies are supported through consistent communication from the curriculum director in the district. I also reach out to other educators understand these strategies in order to keep my classroom evolving.
Hey Ohio friends!!
Annie, math coordinator for a k-8 district in Illinois (Chicago-area)
Fueling myself professionally often comes from sharing my ideas at professional conferences and in-district PD. I love teachers! ❤️ #octmchat

A2) I read, read, read, and read some more. Would that be (read)^3 or 3(read)? Anyway, then I follow mathmazing people on TWITTER. The people here are putting the principles into action, and are so very supportive. #octmchat
Hi, Allie! Thanks for joining #OCTMchat tonight from Nebraska! :) How often do you and your Kdg team get to meet? What are some of the things that have happened because you have that structure in place?
Principal, grade level teams, and math coach together looking at assessment data around power standards that we have identified. The rest of the details are still being worked out! #OCTMchat
Q3 (see slide for prompt)
@NCTM's Principles to Actions states that Mathematics teachers are "lifelong learners and doers of mathematics" (p. 99)
Begin your response with A3 and include #OCTMchat
We have 50 minutes every Wed before 1st period for professional time. Sometimes this time is planned for building work, sometimes dept work, and team work. And some teams are lucky to have a common plan period in their daily schedule #octmchat
I love that you have built a culture where it's safe to try new things and encourage new ideas... what are some of the ways you all have gotten to this point? What's your secret? #OCTMchat
Q2 (see slide for prompt)
"Developing expertise as a mathematics teacher is a career-long process. The knowledge base of effective mathematics teaching and learning is continually expanding" (@NCTM , 2014, p. 102).
#OCTMchat
A3 I find that my deeper understanding comes from answering students’ questions! I have to deeply understand to explain processes different ways and answer the “why” questions! #octmchat
I hate that you had to say "occasionally"... what are some of the ways you might be able to encourage more of this time with your colleagues? #OCTMchat
My Twitter PLN keeps me current... be sure to "follow" some of our #OCTMchat participants and check out some of the people they "follow" #bettertogether
Q3 Timing is always an issue but I take advantage of opportunities such as conferences and conversations. Today I was reminded of a few books on my shelf that I need to pick up for a closer read. #octmchat
A3) I continually question my "Mathematical knowledge". By that I mean, I can factor like a boss, get triggy with identitites, but do I really conceptually understand the division of fractions? I am obsessed with @mburnsmath#Growing#octmchat
And... sometimes my deeper understanding comes from LISTENING to my students! I always am amazed at HOW students think and learn mathematics! #bettertogether#octmchat
A3: #OCTMchat I deepen my own mathematical knowledge by reading blogs, watching videos, and discussing concepts. Even sometimes explaining concepts to a non educator is helpful because they can help me understand their own misconceptions.
I've been learning how parallel thought processes are used in real careers and passing that info along to Ss. I argue that Ss that are aware of STEM have a deeper appreciation of the power of algebra #octmchat
The math coaches in our district went through this training as a part of our role. I would have done it on my own too though. It helps you understand the professions of numeracy. if you go to their website you can see when it’s offered in your area. #octmchat
Clear district goals for teaching and learning and the investment with Instructional coaching are two major factors, plus amazing educators who are passionate about math and learning and always asking how they can do better for kids #OCTMchat
A4: I try to help others when they ask, offer PD during a staff meeting after attending annual @ohioctm conference, try to get others to talk about math...not literacy #octmchat
AMEN to all of this, @JacquiLehmkuhl! #OCTMchat (I feel like I always have a book in my Amazon cart)... how many minutes to commit to read each morning??
A4 #octmchat I am constantly referencing the great books I have read and the activities that support conceptual understanding and the need to make sense of mathematics
A3: As a writer of many resources, often in grade levels 6-8, which are not where my experience lies, I am always learning how to best help Ss and Ts make connections between the "maths" by thinking about them deeply myself... and researching ideas of others. #octmchat
A4 deleoping professionalism as the “baby” teacher is interesting but you can still be so influential! Being professional to me means that you are always evolving your methods for what is best for your students and being the best for your school! #octmchat
YES! We have so much to learn from each other... I'm so thankful for the range of expertise and knowledge that surrounds me! #octmchat -- and even as the "baby" teacher we have so much to learn from YOU! :)
A4 Book studies, invite others to present and become a part of math PD's. Get others involved in math nights and make a connection with the community. #OCTMchat
I have hosted a few book talks with my grade 6-12 teachers. They are a great way to promote a common focus for growth, as well as build connections between teachers of different grade levels & subject levels. #octmchat
A4 I want to help coworkers become exposed to more positive influences for change that can help us be better vs. just feeling as if they have been mandated to change for the sake of change or because they feel forced to jump on board with things that just seem like fads.#octmchat
