Welcome #G2Great friends. We are so excited to have Drew Dudley on our chat tonight. We can’t wait to soak in his wisdom. I am actually joining you from Honolulu, This is my ocean view. Not bad to have DOUBLE inspiration.
@DayOneDrew@DrMaryHoward@hayhurst3@brennanamy
We LOVE that Drew because each of us know as educators that we must step outside of our comfort zones if we ask others to do so. That’s where the exciting learning reside - right in that messy uncertain part. We’re so grateful to you for meandering the mess with US! #G2Great
A1. Humble teachers who advocate for their students feel like they are swimming upstream. Leadership often feels like more responsibility/ accountability with few rewards.
#G2Great
A1 The examples of leaders we’re given as kids play a big role. Your first examples of anything shape your understanding for the rest of your life. Too often leadership examples are giants: presidents, scientific groundbreakers, conquerors. Most are also white men. #G2Great
A1 For too long, we've reserved leadership to a chosen few dubbed with that lofty title. When we view this role as a label to be worn, we put a great deal power in the hands of one person and limit the potential of what leadership can be. #G2Great
A1 I think we think leaders are meant to be someone else. I tend regard leaders as being bigger than life - certainly bigger than my life. But the truth is I am a leader and so are you. We have to be we teach. #G2Great@DrMaryHoward@franmcveigh@DayOneDrew
A1: Perhaps we think we have to know all the answers to be a "leader." Actually, I think we need to be curious and bring out the best in others. #G2Great#LitBankStreet
We must be careful not to spend so much time celebrating amazing things that hardly anyone can do that we convince ourselves those are the only things worth celebrating. #G2Great
A1: Part of being a leader includes having the humility to not call oneself a leader. A leader is someone who is part of the group and considers themselves the same as others. Often, other people view someone as a leader, but not the leader themselves. #LitBankStreet#G2Great
A1: I think we think to be a leader we have to know "everything." In fact, I believe we need to first lift other people up and always be curious and ask questions. #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A1. I think when your eyes are on your purpose and not on yourself, you don’t have time to think of yourself as a leader. You lose yourself in purpose #G2Great
A1: I think ppl are hesitant to call themselves leaders BC they come from a humble place of being a servant instructor/leader.
I think they are hesitant BC they may not have been formally recognized as a leader by their peers before. #G2Great
A1: Natural leaders take on the role authentically, and do not need the title or the credit. They are passionate people who have ♥️, strong interpersonal and communication skills, are active listeners, and have high emotional intelligence. #G2Great
A1 Too often great leaders think it must be about a grand gesture are big accomplishment, but as @DayOneDrew says everyone has the opportunity to be a leader, everyday...the small moments can have a big impact! #g2great
A1: The world "leader" does feel like something someone else should call you. The connotation being that if you have to call yourself one, maybe you aren't. #g2great
Very true! I try to tell my students that humility isn't denying what makes you awesome, it's recognizing that what makes you awesome doesn't make you BETTER than anyone else. #G2Great
A1 Our perception of leader in schools has long been designated to administrator (principal, vice principal, specialist, coordinator etc. or one person given that role.) We need to redefine leadership not as a “position” but as a mindset that leads to action. #G2Great
A1 As long as we evaluate our leadership by accolades and awards earned over time, rather than by evaluating our behaviours today, most of us won’t feel comfortable with the title. #G2Great
Absolutely and that’s why we need to surround ourselves with supportive others. It’s amazing how we can find the courage with people we trust! #G2Great
A1: I agree..the best leaders bring out the best in others and lead by example! It is so important to make sure everyone feels like they matter and are important and included. #LitBankstreet#g2great
A1: Perhaps we think we have to know all the answers to be a "leader." Actually, I think we need to be curious and bring out the best in others. #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A1 Adopt the idea that we all wake up having accomplished the same number of leadership behaviours today (zero), so each day we have an opportunity and obligation to behave as leaders. You can engage in more leadership BEHAVIOURS today than any CEO. #G2Great
For sure! For what it's worth, I think we should stay away from words like "small" and "little" though...they're "simple" moments. But simple doesn't mean little! #G2Great
A1 The examples of leaders we’re given as kids play a big role. Your first examples of anything shape your understanding for the rest of your life. Too often leadership examples are giants: presidents, scientific groundbreakers, conquerors. Most are also white men. #G2Great
For sure...I find a lot of people feel like calling themselves a leader calls for a level of cockiness or arrogance with which they don't want to be associated. But again - if we don't own it, our students won't! #G2Great
A1 Much of our perception of leader comes from the way our tradition leaders (principals) view their own role and the potential for shared leadership across a school. This shift in thinking can change our perceptions and open a door to shared leadership. #G2Great
For sure! And as educators we know that leadership isn't about having all the answers...it's about asking those powerful questions of ourselves and others. #G2Great
A1. I often think leaders are “them,” and not “me.” I know I display characteristics of a leader and teach my students how to be leaders in our world, but I fall victim to believing that leadership requires a responsibility I am unable to take on. #G2Great#CCED421
A1: We are sometimes hesitant to call ourselves leaders because we’ve seen leaders who use their “power” to their own advantage rather than for the greater benefit of others #G2Great#CCED421
Agreed. I don't mind the term at all. I find it even worse when leaders with real power act like they aren't in a position to make change, ask folks what their thoughts are to be polite and democratic, and then do what they want anyway. Like you said, own it. #g2great
So true. This is especially important to keep in mind when working with children. Making small steps is what life is all about, starting from childhood. It is so easy to forget that! It is something to remind ourselves of as well as our students! #G2Great
We must be careful not to spend so much time celebrating amazing things that hardly anyone can do that we convince ourselves those are the only things worth celebrating. #G2Great
Drew’s work (book) is all about "helping individuals and organizations increase their leadership capacity.” (from his website)> We need that desperately in education because we seem to be confusing that focus with BUYING a product. Not even in the same ballpark #G2Great
A2 An essential school value is a a sense of personal/professional responsibility. We can no long view leadership as something others do TO us but something that we hold in our own hands that can influence what happens around us. #G2Great
My students chose “impact” – a commitment to creating moments that cause people to feel better off for having interacted with you. That’s key: make sure that the value is defined by using the words “A commitment to…” so the focus is on actual behaviours #G2Great
A2. Single most important value:
Kindness.
Treat everyone as you would like to be treated.
Equitably,
with respect,
patiently,
and valued.
(Sneaky - could not stop with just one)
#G2Great
A2 We too often use words that sound good and we have no idea what they mean. Make sure your students define the things they want to define them. #G2Great
I once had a student from Africa ask "why would you walk in someone else's shoes? Why wouldn't you put on all their clothes?" Thought it was such a great way of looking at empathy. #G2Great
A2. I was going to say this as well. If we all could think from each other’s view points we could accomplish so much that would benefit all of us! #g2Great
So important Laura (and you have VOLUMES of that). If we don’t have empathy for other, we can’t have the impact we need because we see the world ONLY through our eyes. LOVE this #G2Great
A2 Personal/professional responsibility begins within but is also influenced by the atmosphere in which we reside. If schools promote obligatory compliance, we lose our sense of agency and thus our ability to embrace the values that give rise to shared leadership. #G2Great
I love the concept of "shared intention". We might go about it different ways, but it's that shared hope in the outcome that leads to collaboration. #G2Great

A2: Not sure if it's a "real" value but positivity. This time of yr it is easy to get down during the school year. Its so important to stay positive not just for each other but for our Ss too-they can sense when we are not. They are happy when we are :) #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A2, Value: Perseverance- the continued effort Ss put in and see to achieve their own versions of success will continue to motivate them to create means of cyclical success by their own design.
#LitBankStreet#g2great#GoBeGreat
A2: Respect is such an important quality to have as a leader. Every role in an organization holds so much value. It takes a village to help our students grow, and we need to constantly work together to make that happen! #G2Great
A2: Not sure if it's a "real" value but positivity. This time of yr it is easy to get down during the school year. Its so important to stay positive not just for each other but for our Ss too-they can sense when we are not. They are happy when we are :) #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A2 I absolutely love the idea of having this conversation with students about the values we could ALL embody. The idea of shared leadership is not just about our school “leader” but how we view leadership within our own classrooms (ie: My classroom vs OUR classroom.) #G2Great
A2: If I had the power for students to embody one value it would be finding the confidence that they deserve, not only as a student, but as an individual. #g2great#LitBankStreet
I think any concept that serves as criteria for decision making in your life is a real value. That's what values are: criteria for decision making. If you ask "what is a positive way of looking at this?", then it's a value for you! #G2Great#awesomevalue
A1: I think people are hesitant to call themselves leaders based on their fear of judgement from others. Calling oneself a leader can be going outside their comfort zone and seeing oneself in a different perspective. #g2great#LitBankStreet
"Finding the confidence they DESERVE". That's amazing. Stealing that...
Actually, in leadership you never steal an idea...you "benchmark a best practice". ;) #G2Great
A3 A wholistic approach to goal setting. Goals are more than content- they are related to life. As Ss experience success in goal setting the more they see that they can bend reality and make an impact on their own lives. #G2Great@DrMaryHoward@franmcveigh@brennanamy@DayOneDrew
A3 I ask them to create a list of 30 pieces of life advice they’d give to others. Then I ask them to “reverse-engineer” the values at the foundation of each piece of advice. #G2Great
A3 This begins by noticing & nurturing values students already bring to the learning table and helping them bring them to life. But to do this we must let go of a long tradition of teacher “in charge” and invite students to assume a leadership role in purposeful ways. #G2Great
A3: I have my students develop detailed and complete WHY statements for why they are in my class or what they hope to get out of it. We revisit these statements periodically to remind us what we are striving for. #g2great
A3: This right here is the million 💵question. We need to develop a relationship with our students to see what motivates them. Once we k me what makes them tick we must do what we can to empower them to reach their goals and become a leader #G2Great
A3: Understanding what makes them unique and encourage our students to accept themselves for who they are- because the way that they are is just right! #LitBankStreet#G2Great
A3 - sorry! I meant if their piece of advice is "get knocked down twice, get up three times", the foundational values might be perseverance and resilience. #G2Great
A3 Do that for 30 pieces of advice and you get 30-90 values. 3-6 tend to appear more than others. Also gets students recognizing they are already “wise”, regardless of their age. #G2Great
That shows such respect that we recognize that they bring themselves to the learning table and thus are at LEAST as important as what we bring. I love that George! #G2Great
A3: I have my students develop detailed and complete WHY statements for why they are in my class or what they hope to get out of it. We revisit these statements periodically to remind us what we are striving for. #g2great
A 3 Read and discuss books, videos. Have discussions on topics that have urgency and relevance. Teachers can provoke discussions with statements or a poem or article. Stir students’ thinking and a desire to talk. #g2great
A3- The first step is to build trust with the student, then through honest and open individual conversations we can help them to discover what is important to them, what drives them, we just need to be sure to allow them to decide and not decide for them #g2great
A3 As educators we cannot hope for students to embrace these values if we don’t change the way we see our role and theirs. A stand and deliver view of teacher as the almighty will not accomplish that. We must design student-centered learning spaces of shared values. #G2Great
This is how I ended up giving my TED talk: I used the talks in workshops, and my students started loving them. When they found out there was a conference in Toronto, they nominated me secretly! #G2Great
A3: Asking Ss, “Who is the person you want to be? Who is the person you admire most?” Motivating students to reflect on the traits their mentors possess and the reasons they have those attributes is relatable and helps them to set their own attainable goals. #G2Great
And we damn well better know our own values and demonstrate them. We can never ask students to do something we aren't willing to do ourselves. #G2Great
Thanks Mary. You are right what they bring to the table is so important. Everyone has an innate power within themselves. If I can help Ss realize this, I think they can do anything. #g2great
A3 Creating classrooms of shared ownership is an absolutely prerequisite to having the kind of classrooms that will nurture these personal values for ourselves & our students. This begins with how we create an atmosphere of shared responsibility vs compliance. #G2Great
A3. I try and model to my students positive self-talk. This includes telling my students the values I possess that are important to me and how they impact others. When students see an example of how to identify personal values, they will think about their own. #G2Great#CCED421
I love that Drew. The people in my life who had the greatest impact on me embraced that quality. I actually took surfing lessons in Honolulu today even though it’s only my second time on a board. I wanted to show that we have to see “learner” from the eyes of others. #G2Great
A3 - sorry! I meant if their piece of advice is "get knocked down twice, get up three times", the foundational values might be perseverance and resilience. #G2Great
And we damn well better know our own values and demonstrate them. We can never ask students to do something we aren't willing to do ourselves. #G2Great
Yes! Too many students become their own worst subjects because they've learned "pay closest attention to the things on which you're going to be tested. If we don't test them on who they want to be (instead of what they want to do), they don't think about it. #G2Great
And we damn well better know our own values and demonstrate them. We can never ask students to do something we aren't willing to do ourselves. #G2Great
This is awesome. One thing I teach is look out for the word "just" (I'm just a teenager, I'm just a kid, I'm just middle management even). It's usually used as a diminisher. Leaders never allow people of worth to diminish themselves in front of us. #G2Great
As educators I think we should do the same thing for each other. It can wear us down sometimes and we should have each others' backs. We're awesome damnit! :) #G2Great
A4 authenticity is non-negotiable we can't be leaders w/o knowing who we really are. Be yourself everyday and be interested in who you are and what's next for you. @DrMaryHoward@franmcveigh@DayOneDrew#G2Great
A4 Without question it would begin with students assuming personal responsibility for their own learning. Of course, this begins within a respectful environment that we create where these “non-negotiables” can both survive & thrive. #G2Great
Yes! Also noticing and supporting the assets and strengths that students bring with them into the classroom and learning process, and making space/stepping back to let them shine #LitBankStreet#G2Great
A4 We turned it into a test: each value had a question attached. You couldn’t answer the question without living the value. (ie. "How have I recognized someone else’s leadership today?" For the value of impact #G2Great
I love that Dana. And sometimes, we are the one who holds up the mirror so they CAN see these things. So many of our children don’t have people in their lives who let them know what makes them amazing! We can’t lose sight of that #G2Great
Yes! Also noticing and supporting the assets and strengths that students bring with them into the classroom and learning process, and making space/stepping back to let them shine #LitBankStreet#G2Great
Q4 I want Ss to demonstrate are empathy, passion, openness and kindness, if all of our students demonstrate these qualities our world will be a better place tomorrow than it is today #g2great
I love the idea of "thinking" as a core behaviour. A study recently showed that up to 80% of the decisions we make each day aren't decisions at all. They're unconscious habits. #G2Great
I love this! I think it is so important for students to further their learning through experience not only academically but socially, emotionally and behaviorally #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A4: I want to see my Ss active and engaged. I try to be understanding here though because I do feel like most of this is on me. If I'm positive, active, and engaged, I can bring the majority of the Ss along with me. I set the culture. I set the temperature. #g2great
In reply to
@franmcveigh, @DayOneDrew, @DrMaryHoward, @hayhurst3
A1: I think sometimes Ts think that leadership means boss or authoritative figure when really it means sharing your strengths with others while maintaining the building of relationships. I also think that some Ts think that leadership will make them look arrogant #G2Great
A4 Making our non-negotiables a reality for our students begins with our willingness to define non-negotiables for ourselves. We can’t just give lip service to this shared role but must nurture it from the first day of school to the last in every possible way. #G2Great
A4. Empathy. Leaders must have compassion toward those they lead. In order to be an effective leader, you must be willing to understand and listen to those who put their trust in you. #G2Great#CCED421
A4. Some “non-negotiable” behaviors I want my Ss to hold on to each day are: respect, empathy, and advocacy (upstanding and self). Through these values, responsive vision & strategies, we create growth-mindset classrooms.
#LitBankStreet#g2great
A4: My wish for all Ss is to embrace perseverance, stay determined, and have heart. I want them to have the ability to connect with people, show compassion, and empathy for others as they lead. #G2Great
We can’t expect from kids what we are not willing to GIVE. It’s a two way street. If we insist on one-size fits all, they will see themeless that way. If we do only stand and delivery, collaboration will be possible. We have to create what we want THEM to see and LIVE! #G2Great
A4: I want to see my Ss active and engaged. I try to be understanding here though because I do feel like most of this is on me. If I'm positive, active, and engaged, I can bring the majority of the Ss along with me. I set the culture. I set the temperature. #g2great

A4. I expect my college students to take care of each other in class. Look around and see who needs your help. You’re in a helping profession! #g2great
A5 “If you just work hard enough, it will all pay off in the end.” Without knowing how hard enough, what exactly they want the payoff to be, or when the end will come, that can be incredibly stressful #G2Great
A4 Creating a sense of shared ownership grounded in non-negotiables we want students to bring to life in our classrooms is not just a new mindset we want them to embrace. This shift in thinking for students is only possible if we too make a shift in our thinking. #G2Great
Like in life right? It’ not about the “School thing” but the LIFE thing. They will never be asked to fill out worksheets or do dioramas in the real so why would we even think that makes sense in school. #G2Great
I love this! I think it is so important for students to further their learning through experience not only academically but socially, emotionally and behaviorally #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A5 There are so many “untaught lessons” but the first one that comes to mind is the very dangerous perception of MY classroom vs OUR classroom. We can’t say that we want one thing but show by our actions we believe in something very different. It begins with us. #G2Great
A5 Whenever we teach compliance. It's done in a million different ways subtly and overtly. One example when teaching a whole group lesson and T says, "Tell me why..." s/be "us" #G2Great@DrMaryHoward@franmcveigh@brennanamy@DayOneDrew
A5. Untaught lessons:
Adults are more important than students.
Students should be QUIET.
Students should "please" teachers.
Gender & race stereotypes.
Zip code matters.
#G2Great

A5: One lesson we should be careful not to teach is that quick thinking, or louder voices should be listened to/respected over those who are more soft-spoken and/or need more time to share their ideas
#LitBankStreet#G2Great
A5: Don't challenge authority, sit down and be quiet. We don't explicitly say these things (although sometimes we do) but we need to be careful not to send that message. I like argument. I like contrarians. I like those who dance to the beat of their own drum. #g2great
In reply to
@franmcveigh, @dayone, @DrMaryHoward, @hayhurst3
A2: Empathy b/c I think many times we work excessively hard in our own bubbles and we need to remember to take the time 2 praise Ts & Ss around us for their hard work as well as listen to learn from others around us to be the best T/person we can be #G2Great
A5 These are conversations we MUST have in schools, both w/educators and w/Sts. We must be honest about things we do to stifle a student leadership role & stop pointing a finger of blame their way. We can’t hope to get what we don’t desire & nurture EVERY day. #G2Great
A5 Are our students living their lives for people they haven’t met yet? College admissions officers, future employers, future romantic partners? We can’t let everything they do be to impress someone they haven’t met yet #G2Great
This is exactly what I was thinking! Every voice should be heard, and just because one student is louder or participates more does not mean he/she is smarter or "better." #LitBankStreet#G2Great
A5: One lesson we should be careful not to teach is that quick thinking, or louder voices should be listened to/respected over those who are more soft-spoken and/or need more time to share their ideas
#LitBankStreet#G2Great
Yes! We love to do a social styles exercise to help people understand that being quiet doesn't mean someone doesn't know or doesn't care...it sometimes means you're not making space. #G2Great

I’m thinking as I’m watching the amazing discussion tonight how much the business world and the education world are really so much more alike than different Isn’t that true Kimberly Davis? @OnStageKimberly (you would love this chat with Drew Dudley right now) #G2Great
A5 My message to my students: you should work incredibly hard to make your grades extraordinary. Then work twice as hard to make them the least impressive thing about you. #G2Great
A5 These “untaught lessons” begin in the earliest grades and become exacerbated as kids move up the grades. None of this is possible unless we look into a reflective mirror and take ownership for the things we do to perpetuate this ‘leadership stifling’ process. #G2Great
Oh my how we need this mindset in an age of standardized testing and hyper focus on grading I think that we have to have that mindset as well. There’s a real danger in seeing children (or anyone) as a number rather than an amazing human with unlimited potential #G2Great
A5 My message to my students: you should work incredibly hard to make your grades extraordinary. Then work twice as hard to make them the least impressive thing about you. #G2Great
A5 My message to my students: you should work incredibly hard to make your grades extraordinary. Then work twice as hard to make them the least impressive thing about you. #G2Great
For sure...we need to be aware we play a role, but be compassionate with ourselves because it's unconscious. We were taught the same things after all. #G2Great
A5 These “untaught lessons” begin in the earliest grades and become exacerbated as kids move up the grades. None of this is possible unless we look into a reflective mirror and take ownership for the things we do to perpetuate this ‘leadership stifling’ process. #G2Great
A4: Giving respect to others will thus get respect from others. Always listening and making people feel that their voice is important as well. #G2Great
A6 We can’t encourage Its to lead in a positive way if we aren’t willing to take a step back and allow them to do just that. We have to let go of the ties that bind and invite them into the leadership experience. There has to be a handover of responsibility happening. #G2Great
A6 By no longer using the term “leader” to describe those who acquire power, prestige and influence through actions driven entirely by their own self-interest. We need to create a new term for those who acquire and use influence in a way that hurts others. #G2Great
A6. Model appropriate behavior.
Have those difficult conversations about inappropriate behavior.
Use INQUIRY.
Don't label good or bad.
What is effective or less effective?
#G2Great

A5: working on being more aware of how my own identity as a white woman impacts the way I unconsciously impart lessons that perpetuate white cultural norms #LitBankStreet#G2Great
A6 I have adopted the phrase “catalyst for harm”. Catalysts make things happen, so all leaders are catalysts, but not all catalysts are leaders. You can tell the difference by how they use fear. #G2Great
A5: We have to teach our students that it is okay to make a mistakes. Adults say this to children, but how do adults model it? We have to be willing to be okay with our mistakes. This can be hard for young teachers! #LitBankStreet#g2great
A5 My message to my students: you should work incredibly hard to make your grades extraordinary. Then work twice as hard to make them the least impressive thing about you. #G2Great
#g2great Not giving attention or talking negatively about them. Our attention is one of our most prized possessions and we can help our students by showing them where we choose to put it.
A6 Catalysts for harm add fear to try to win. Leaders remove fear to try to succeed. We need to use these different terms to make clear becoming powerful and famous is not leadership. #G2Great
A6: We can't worry about others. What we can do is be excellent people that Ss can look up to and show them what caring, positive, and kind people look, sound, and act like in society. #g2great
I actually did another TEDx talk focusing on this idea. This was aimed specifically at students about "untaught lessons".
https://t.co/Wt9uaodZDt#G2Great
A5 My message to my students: you should work incredibly hard to make your grades extraordinary. Then work twice as hard to make them the least impressive thing about you. #G2Great
Oh my yes, we see that in schools for sure. You can FEEL the difference when you walk into a building from both of those perspectives. It’s palpable and can lift a building to the highest heights of heights or squash the emotional climate like a bug! #G2Great
A6 I have adopted the phrase “catalyst for harm”. Catalysts make things happen, so all leaders are catalysts, but not all catalysts are leaders. You can tell the difference by how they use fear. #G2Great
A6 Encouraging Sts to lead isn’t something we put in a lesson plan book. It’s a spirit we nurture daily across the entire learning day. It isn’t act of DOING but a process of BECOMING that begins when we are willing to let go of the ball & chains of compliance. #G2Great
A6: I would ask my Ss to reflect on how their actions are making other people feel. A big part of leadership is being in tune with how others respond to you. #G2Great
A6 Those who lead with fear and intimidation can experince gains in the short tern but always crash and burn eventually showing examples of this can b helpful #g2great
A6 I also think we need to make sure we fight the idea that leadership, education, life and happiness is a competition. I tried to address that in this TEDxTalk:
https://t.co/SZTQmjEStp#G2Great
A5: I like to tell them about the importance of being a total package. I often like to tell them about 21st Century Skills being more important to businesses and how their actions can open/close the opportunit's door.
#G2Great
Encourage Sts to lead in a positive way through example: Teach about leaders from from today who lead from caring, thoughtful, and inclusive places (and who come from different places, backgrounds, experiences, races, genders... #LitBankStreet#G2Great
A6 Those who lead with fear and intimidation can experince gains in the short tern but always crash and burn eventually showing examples of this can b helpful #g2great
A6 I think that contemplating these behaviors that would give students a leadership role is a conversation that we must have with them. This begins by noticing and naming what they are already doing and then discussing other behaviors they can embrace anew. #G2Great
#g2great A6 Not giving in to negativity and politics. Being kind and empathetic goes a long way. The foundation of leadership is building positive relationships and caring for others.
A7 I don’t think we live in a society that traditionally invite others to consider & verbalize why they matter. Why is that and how can we make that a part of the learning conversation? We celebrate those we admire in history so why couldn't we turn this inward? #G2Great
A7. We MUST empower students and teach them to self advocate while they are at school.
This is a life skill.
Our democracy depends on providing students with choice and voice while in school.
#G2Great
A7 This Q, why do I matter is an important one bc it helps to focus the mind on your own value. I matter bc I am helping Ss to be independent in the world. I am all in knowing what they think about themselves! #G2Great@DrMaryHoward@franmcveigh@DayOneDrew
Ask Sts this question so that they can begin to see the positive impact that they have on the people around them, and environments, spaces, communities they inhabit... So they begin to understand that THEY HAVE A POSITIVE IMPACT #LitBankStreet#G2Great
A question I often ask teachers and students is, “how have you made a contribution?” In the book the Art of possibility they explain how focusing on contribution is the antidote for a narrow view of competition and success #G2Great

A7: Asking Ss, “Why do you matter?” Well, this gives them an opportunity to reflect. It is an entry point to conversation about purpose. When you have purpose, everything in life has more meaning. #G2Great
A7 How can we claim what we’re offering is an education when some of the most caring, compassionate, driven and well-educated people on the planet haven’t been asked “why do you matter?” as part of their education? #G2Great
A7 We need to ask students that question to show that we value wo they are and how they matter both to this world and to the learning environment. We should initiate these conversations from the first day of school. #G2Great
A7 When Kids and adults realize they mayter they have value they can begin to have a positive inpact on other and make good choices for themseves #g2great
You know what? I added that line to my talk after a principal told me that I can't stand on stage and tell students that marks don't matter. He told me I shouldn't speak to students if I was going to do that. #G2Great
A7 How often do we acknowledge that some Sts are not valued outside of school. We may not be able to change their home lives, but we certainly can change their school lives in ways that could widen our impact & thus their perceptions of who they are & why they matter. #G2Great
9:27 A7 Try asking your kids – if they’re under 5, they give amazing answers. Once they go to school, they’ve come to believe why they matter isn’t up to them to decide: it’s to be evaluated by others. #G2Great
A7: We need to remind one anther that our day to day lives with one another matter, and perhaps matter the most. The little things we do for each other like checking in and helping are vital and easily overlooked in our hyper-paced society. #LitBankStreet#G2Great
Ask Sts this question so that they can begin to see the positive impact that they have on the people around them, and environments, spaces, communities they inhabit... So they begin to understand that THEY HAVE A POSITIVE IMPACT #LitBankStreet#G2Great
If anyone has the book, if you tweet me a picture of yourself with it, I'll send a code for free access to the online, interactive version! #G2Great#shamelesspromotion.
I think that is very powerful. How much growth, and development could happen if we all took that stance? Amazing. #G2Great It's an important conversation.
