#TeacherFriends INTROS! Where are you? What's your edu-role? New here? New to Twitter? Need Twitter support?
***What's your favorite way to 're-group' in the summer time?
Hi #teacherfriends I’m Kristen! I teach K in Indpls & am the 2014 Nat’l Shell Science Teacher Award Recipient, PAEMST Recipient & 2018 Robert E. Yager Awardee! I'm a co-mod here and giver of prizes! Be sure to follow me to win! :)
#TeacherFriends I am a music-lady, turned author/illustrator of picture books. I am fortunate to be included in conferences, presenting my perspective on integrating the Arts into Early Childhood classrooms.
*That's me last summer at @FrogStreet Splash!
Good evening, #teacherfriends. Glad to be back in such good company. Finishing up the last 12 days in 5th before going back to the early years. I'm teaching #transitionalkindergarten next year.
#TeacherFriends I have had 9 End-of-Year school visits (as author & illustrator) in 6 states over the last 6 weeks. That's a new record for me professionally. It is such an honor to be welcomed into your hearts -- and buildings.
Q2: #teacherfriends My teammates and I were just commenting on this yesterday during lunch. There were not alot ofelectronics and we all remember playing outside, running around and hanging out at friends houses. My cue to come home was when the street lights came on.
Tweeting from Clarkston. Just finished 4yrs of teaching 3rd graders 💃🏾💃🏾. Looking forward to reading a ton this summer (@RethinkSchools@lilshopostories@EdWeekTeacher) and applying to new jobs. Also enjoy just laying in bed until 8am. It’s the little things. #teacherfriends
Yes! Not any different from this year for me. I've learned alot from this experience and hope to take that into account in my new role. :) #teacherfriends
Q2: #teacherfriends: I would’ve LOVED to attend the iteach national conference in Las Vegas, but try as I might I couldn’t get my district to pay for it..lol... Maybe next year
I'm Brenna -- I'm lucky enough to get to work alongside @fuzzlady77 in Indianapolis! I'm spending my summer thinking about all things literacy and cheering on two little guys who play a whole lotta baseball! #TeacherFriends
#TeacherFriends Here are the questions for our chat tonight 6/5 with Brenna @livewriteteach on Loving Literacy and specifically #WritersWorkshop.

#TeacherFriends Q1: How do you define #WritersWorkshop? What
routines, rituals are essential when launching writing workshop? How do they add to/support the experience for your students?
#teacherfriends One of my favorite rationale pieces for writing workshop: @inyoungwriters shares why writing workshop is the instructional framework that supports ALL students. How do your ideas connect with theirs? https://t.co/QNOabPmEQZ
A1: Writers Workshop is my favorite format to teach writing. Mini Lesson, the ind writing/conferencing and then share. Sadly, schedules are making this harder and harder. #teacherfriends
A1: #teacherfriends We start from the beginning and introduce the parts of a WW lesson and build our stamina everyday! I find that slow and steady the 1st 6 weeks helps to grow amazing writers!

#teacherfriends Teach kids the format, pacing, and roles of writing workshop! This graphic is based on roughly a 60-minute writing workshop -- how might you tweak to fit your schedule?
Question for all my #teacherfriends I will be starting student teaching in the spring semester any tips to make the best of that experience for me, my cooperating teacher, and the kiddos? #EDSP454

#teacherfriends Here's another visual for the predictable structure of writing workshop. There’s power in predictability! "Writing workshop goes this way each and every day!" It's catchy, right?
I would check with your cooperating teacher to see if you can observe the first few days of school in the fall, so you know how that looks! #teacherfriends

A1: I am an IST (Intervention Specialist Teacher/reading/math) grades first - fourth...although I do not specifically teach writing, it is connected to EVERYTHING! When I was in the classroom, I learned that setting rituals was the essential to success #teacherfriends #5305
A1: It is essential that we explain writers are writing when hey draw a picture or make a “meaningful” mark. They must understand writers are never done. #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends Q1: How do you define #WritersWorkshop? What
routines, rituals are essential when launching writing workshop? How do they add to/support the experience for your students?
#TeacherFriends A1: for my Ss it's building writing endurance. Most this area is no. 2 least liked thing to do at school. So we start small in Aug. with simple editing until that's easy and by May we eagerly write semi-research pieces.
This yr my kids wrote more than ever because they were given the space, time, and freedom to do it. I would do a 10-minute mini-lesson and get out of their way. It was beautiful to see the works they produced. #teacherfriends
Yes. Also, some students my need digital supports or others to help with scribing. Especially little ones or those w/OT issues. Writing can take place in many forms. Everyone has a story to tell. #teacherfriends

#teacherfriends Designing a magical meeting area for your writing community is a critical workshop planning piece…it's equally important to figure out how we'll work within it.
Here are some tips to begin your brainstorming: https://t.co/ZWo1WEoYsa
I have reluctant writers. We've been working on handwriting much of the year. This week we look at a picture, talk about wonderings/noticings/Qs then free write. I've gotten best writing all year from this format #teacherfriends
#teacherfriends Here's another visual for the predictable structure of writing workshop. There’s power in predictability! "Writing workshop goes this way each and every day!" It's catchy, right?
#teacherfriends Our goal for writing workshop is that students become better writers. Let's involve students in creating our space to do this! Advice for working alongside students to generate class expectations... https://t.co/uOCpezCWfh
For sure! That is one reason I love this graphic -- it helps me remember that the most important part of the workshop is actually the time to practice what I'm learning in authentic ways! #TeacherFriends
#teacherfriends Creating powerful partnerships is important, too! @Melaniemeehan1 shares tips for working with students to set up productive matches based on likes, goals, and offerings! Have you tried this method yet? https://t.co/1wEbol1mzT
I wish I could have done more of this. Time to share is super important. Even if kids only had time to share a sentence they were really proud of, they were beyond excited to share. That's the power of voice. #TeacherFriends

#teacherfriends Gathering student writing data is a unit’s starting point (and ending point)! Follow @BethMooreSchool tips on giving on-demand assessments, and consider her insights on their joys, curiosities, and challenges. https://t.co/f2ipAdgHbN
A2: I love to study the traits of writing. We begin with looking at pieces of writing using a rubric. We "discover" what "good" writing looks and sounds like. #teacherfriends
A2) I have been using Lucy Caulkins for three years. This year I will attend homegrown #TCRWP that my district is providing. I pick and choose which are appropriate 4 Ss, then supplement w/ team resources. #teacherfriends
This yr my kids wrote more than ever because they were given the space, time, and freedom to do it. I would do a 10-minute mini-lesson and get out of their way. It was beautiful to see the works they produced. #teacherfriends
A2: this has been a struggle the last few years, we are trying to get away from Lucy C. writing but our reading program doesn't have a good writing component to it so it's kids of a free for all. #teacherfriends
This is true! Writing looks many different ways! Are you familiar with the book "A Squiggly Story"? Check it out if you aren't -- it is perfect for young writers learning that every mark is meaningful! #TeacherFriends
#teacherfriends What are the phases of a unit of study and how do they progress? @ruth_ayres created this awesome graphic to show us! Do the 'phases' sound familiar? Check this link for more info from Ruth... https://t.co/Rvx5oEbsQg
We focus on personal narrative, opinion and then, informational writing as these are all CCSS. My mini lessons will change base on the type of writing and S needs. #teacherfriends
#teacherfriends Dear me! Our internet is slooooow tonight. I am missing an amazing chat. :(Welcome to #teacherfriends monthly chat. We are thrilled to have you here. I am Maggie, co-mod and k teacher.
#teacherfriends Designing a magical meeting area for your writing community is a critical workshop planning piece…it's equally important to figure out how we'll work within it.
Here are some tips to begin your brainstorming: https://t.co/ZWo1WEoYsa
#teacherfriends hi good morning. I am Aprajita Ralli from Pathways School Noida India. I teach individuals and societies to grade 6 to 8 and history to 9 and 10
SS/Sci content determines overall flow of units. We choose best WW unit to accompany. Unit on Natives & Exploration was perfect for opinion writing, where Ss had to defend their stance on whether those deemed explorers were truly explorers or conquerors or both. #teacherfriends
#teacherfriends Are you wondering how to weave what you know about students into planning a unit? That’s actually Step 1 in unit planning! Check out this & other unit planning steps by @BethMooreSchool! https://t.co/u24tZxn56L
#teacherfriends Agreed! So much more is being thrown at us that we non longer have a full 60 minutes to teach writing. I try to break it up over several days so they get the content.
A2: #teacherfriends My team just re-organized our unit of study for the upcoming year. We added in 1/2 that are non-genre specific and others that work on developing craft. So excited to put it into action!
#TeacherFriends ILLUSTRATIONS are part of writing process!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
#teacherfriends Our goal for writing workshop is that students become better writers. Let's involve students in creating our space to do this! Advice for working alongside students to generate class expectations... https://t.co/uOCpezCWfh
#teacherfriends In kinder, it is very important to learn each word we say is represented by lines, letters or words. I use KidWriting to instruct my kids at the beginning of the year, then directed drawing once a week to help with spatial awareness.
It's a bit of both. I also like Would you rather type questions. Great for ELL students. The word because always has to support their reasoning. #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends A2: our units tend to be interest motivated and second to that tied to our science or reading concept for that same time period. The detour following an interest is often where we find our "Pot of Gold".
#TeacherFriends If you are new to Twitter, you may wish to follow the "@" of those being quoted by our guest tonight (and other participants tonight as well)
#teacherfriends Creating powerful partnerships is important, too! @Melaniemeehan1 shares tips for working with students to set up productive matches based on likes, goals, and offerings! Have you tried this method yet? https://t.co/1wEbol1mzT
#teacherfriends The first phase of a unit is immersion, which is sometimes forgotten yet super important! Here’s my favorite immersion resource from @OaklandELA that will help you help kids see all kinds of writing possibilities! https://t.co/uP3GFxH0hF
#teacherfriends Once structures are in place for conducting writers workshop, we begin conferring. Building confidence in the how to is so important, and necessary to make our writing time run smoothly.
#teacherfriends Sometimes units go on and on because we think our kids aren’t ready to move forward or we’ve had schedule interruptions. (#truth) I love @BethMooreSchool strategies for keeping units efficient and focused. https://t.co/szc1Ut0nSe
we also have the issue of kids being pulled for title services, so some are there at the beginning and never get to finish, or they miss the first part & seem to be a step behind. Next year this all changes because we are going with a push in rather than pull out. #teacherfriends
This is so true. When we jump into conferring too soon, we miss out on developing the structure as well as some really high-quality kid-watching at the beginning. :) #teacherfriends
Most important lesson for was to demonstraste to my little learners that I was a writer just like them. They loved seeing my doodles & mistakes in process, which they would gladly help me with as editors. Also, scratching the mini lesson when it wasn't fruitful. #teacherfriends
#teacherfriends We still use a hand sign for when we need a restroom break during conferring. 2 fingers (like boy scout sign) or a letter d hand sign for water. It keeps things flowing.
#teacherfriends The minilesson has four parts -- connection, teach, active involvement (or active engagement, as it is sometimes called), and link. The first part of the connection draws kids into work…here are 4 different ways we can invite them in!
#TeacherFriends Q3: What
is important to remember when planning/teaching mini-lessons? What suggestions do you have for teachers new to #WritersWorkshop?
Not really. My team has diff ways to do things and I use the unfilled time to review and keep practicing.
#teacherfriends I also have If...Then....available to use.
Another round of applause from the visual learners in tonight's chat with #TeacherFriends
Brenna you are ON FIRE! We so appreciate your time & resource sharing!
#teacherfriends What are the phases of a unit of study and how do they progress? @ruth_ayres created this awesome graphic to show us! Do the 'phases' sound familiar? Check this link for more info from Ruth... https://t.co/Rvx5oEbsQg
#teacherfriends ...And the second part of the connection tells kids what the work is... See the next tweet for more info on where the teaching point shows up throughout the minilesson!
Writers will write when given the chance to freely write about things of interest to them. If the only writing in our classrooms is editing and handwriting practice, WE build reluctant writers. Choice and patience in WW can build stamina. #TeacherFriends

#teacherfriends In the Workshop Help Desk Series title, "The Quick Guide to Making Your Teaching Stick," Authors Shanna Schwartz & Lucy Calkins recommend tucking in the teaching point six times in a minilesson! Here's where...
#teacherfriends hi good morning. I am Aprajita Ralli from Pathways School Noida India. I teach individuals and societies to grade 6 to 8 and history to 9 and 10
I've yet to see a boxed curriculum that has "free choice" writing. Ts need to find a way to add it in. Kids need a creative outlet too. #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends Q3: What
is important to remember when planning/teaching mini-lessons? What suggestions do you have for teachers new to #WritersWorkshop?
A3: Look at conference notes. What do Ss need? Be sure to model and show models (even students). I plan with showing the traits in different genres...not just one. #teacherfriends
#teacherfriends After the connection in a minilesson, teach through demonstration, guided practice, inquiry, or an explanation. Demonstration is often most powerful method! Here are some tips to make your next demo high-impact!
#teacherfriends A2. We start with any hook Activity , but the standard instructions are that each student must take down notes. Infact the INTERNATIONAL BACALAUREATE does prescribe a Cornell note taking style which helps students stay organised.
I've yet to see a boxed curriculum that has "free choice" writing. Ts need to find a way to add it in. Kids need a creative outlet too. #teacherfriends
#teacherfriends After teaching in a minilesson, we try out the new skill and strategy! Active Involvement right there on the carpet in a ML builds muscle memory and is a super mini-assessment op! Here's how @LannyBall plans for success! https://t.co/GmTYoViHZe
Choice of writing topic is so important in genre units of study! After all, when we can pick the topic we want to write about, we can focus on the actual writing. If I have to focus on the topic AND the writing....well, that's a lot harder. #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends Q3: What

#teacherfriends The first phase of a unit is immersion, which is sometimes forgotten yet super important! Here’s my favorite immersion resource from @OaklandELA that will help you help kids see all kinds of writing possibilities! https://t.co/uP3GFxH0hF
#teacherfriends Finally, comes the last part of the minilesson -- the link. It's smallish, at around 1 minute. Here's some advice on ending your minilesson smart and strong: https://t.co/eWgbilHHzf
#TeacherFriends A3: this may not apply but I spend time pinning (Pinterest)and then printing lists of words for sight sound emotion etc. Like a thesaurus but maybe more broad. My kiddos expressive language stalls out. This tends to be a kick-start. Like this one for example.
#TeacherFriends A3: Realistically, I try to meet with each student 3x/week. Mini-lessons are focused around letter and sounds, but allow for freedom of expression. Brainstorm "your B thing", chart itt, draw and write about it. We do this the entire first semester.
A3: I think the most important part of teaching is modeling, especially in writing. Giving a safe place for students to create, take risk, be themselves and be accepted is key! And...KNOW your students! Just as they are learning, learn about THEM! #teacherfriends #5305
#TeacherFriends INTROS! Where are you? What's your edu-role? New here? New to Twitter? Need Twitter support?
***What's your favorite way to 're-group' in the summer time?
#teacherfriends A3. Mini lessons could be trying to incorporate any skill depending on the need of the class...it's always nice to start with a collaborative skill activity&have Ss understand what all is a must for being a"GOOD STUDENT".
These also set the culture of ur classroom
#teacherfriends Tight teaching in a minilesson = more writing time! Dive into these 10 super-valuable tips for keeping minilessons ‘mini.’ https://t.co/DR1zwjRw5r
#teacherfriends The minilesson has four parts -- connection, teach, active involvement (or active engagement, as it is sometimes called), and link. The first part of the connection draws kids into work…here are 4 different ways we can invite them in!
#teacherfriends A3: when teaching a mini lesson I am very explicit on how their writing should look and whag I want included. I use chart paper and different colored markers and sometimes the magnetic notebook paper from Lakeshore. That way I am modeling explicitly.
#TeacherFriends Q4: How can we meet kids’ needs during independent writing? How do you design #WritersWorkshop to reflect the interests of your students? How much flexibility do you have?
Writers will write when given the chance to freely write about things of interest to them. If the only writing in our classrooms is editing and handwriting practice, WE build reluctant writers. Choice and patience in WW can build stamina. #TeacherFriends
Best thing I can do during indep writing is to move out of their way. Just let them write. Before all units, they create a "Heart of My Writing" heart, where they list topics they are interested in for quick reference. Ss also leave space to add during yr. #TeacherFriends
#teacherfriends Do you ever wonder what is best to teach in a conference? I do! Read up on tips from @AnnaGCockerille on this topic, note-taking, and other important details to sharpen your conferring routines! https://t.co/CYld0sAUC3
A4: Quickly. Ask, how's it going? Point out something you like, and something to work on or try. Others around will hear, it is more instruction. When you find a wow, stop the class and share it. #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends A3: A good benchmark for beginning K writing is to 1)use at least 5 or more colors, 2)label your pictures with the first sound or all of the sounds you know 3)include your name/names Labeling drawings will translate into written language that sticks with story.
#teacherfriends@ConferringCarl shares this helpful graphic to unpack T-S roles in a writing conference in "How's It Going?" --the ultimate book on conferring well in writing workshop.
The magic in creating a strong demo is planning out the strategies we want to show --- figuring out how they work in our own writing -- and then thinking through them with kids. Lucy Calkins calls this "undoing to redo". Find the predictable point of difficulty! #teacherfriends
A4: During the time I have to confer with students, I am able to individualize what we chat about; if I see many students in need of that same skill, I turn it into a mini-lesson in the near future. #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends A3: A good benchmark for beginning K writing is to 1)use at least 5 or more colors, 2)label your pictures with the first sound or all of the sounds you know 3)include your name/names Labeling drawings will translate into written language that sticks with story.
#TeacherFriends Q3: What
is important to remember when planning/teaching mini-lessons? What suggestions do you have for teachers new to #WritersWorkshop?
A4: #teacherfriends My students are always able to choose their topic (to fit their interests) within our unit of study. They can usually try out most everything I share with them in any genre. Usually. :)
#teacherfriends A4 .so while everyone would say hand writing is important , I am inclined to believe that writing a thought in a coherent fashion is most imp..so I would allow Ss to write their answer, notes online as well and then they share it with me on #googledoc or #OneNote
#teacherfriends Mentor texts are an important part of a conferring toolkit! Which texts are in yours? Pick the ones you love and know well. Pick the ones that are sticky with students!
#TeacherFriends Doesn't that just "burn your toast" @FirstAtBat ? I am thrilled to see pictures labeled with one meaningful letter and a variety of colors!

And when you ask, "How's it going?" expect the student to be able to tell you exactly what he or she is working on as a writer. Listen to what they are saying and then restate using a writerly word. Elevate the conversation by including new terms. :) #teacherfriends
#teacherfriends Anchor charts promote student independence and are an incredible teaching-learning tool! Read tips from @MrazKristine & @Marjorie_Writes on using anchor charts! https://t.co/c2Kmv5bGmp (P.S. Check out their book, “Smarter Charts,” too: it is FAB-U-LOUS!)

#teacherfriends Student ownership, goals, paper, and more zombies (You know you have this writer in your class!) -- A collection of posts on really intentional ways we can we provide students choice in writing workshop ---> https://t.co/0if3zT5KUQ
#TeacherFriends There’s power in an inquiry into touchy-feely words through careful analysis of a stack of texts from authors we love because they use those words. The emotion from this discovery feeds their motivation and learning. A teacher found poster just can’t do all that.
#TeacherFriends Q5:
How can we invite students to share at the end of workshop each day? How can we celebrate learning at the end of a unit? How do you involve parents/home in #WrtitersWorkshop?
Time is ALWAYS a struggle, but I make time for Ss to share a word/sentence they are most proud of at the end of WW. I also use StudentTreasures to publish a book of 1 writing piece for each Ss, & we have a publishing party to celebrate, b/c obviously we SHOULD #TeacherFriends
Yes, but is already bound. I write the dates across the top. Their name in each box. I take notes on things I notice and deem important to supporting that child. #teacherfriends
#teacherfriends So, why is the share session important? For starters, it helps us zoom in on student products and processes. @MermelsteinLeah shares her five favorite types of ‘shares’ here... https://t.co/lns6GQHhhE
#TeacherFRIENDS MARK YOUR CALENDARS for our next CHAT, July 10th Tues.
WE WILL CELEBRATE FOUR YEARS of being together with EXTRA PRIZES for PARTICIPANTS!
#TeacherFriends A5: I appoint two recorders to go around and photograph or record student writers sharing in @Seesaw . We put it on the big screen later and watch. Big motivator!
#teacherfriends Have you ever been tempted to skip share because time is slipping away or writers have finally found their rhythm? @DanaMurphy68 begs us to reconsider in her post, “Don’t skip the share!” https://t.co/mbKZkVPV1O
#teacherfriends...totally off topic but has anyone ever tie dyed shirt with their class. Any recommendations of products. Plan to dye 26 shirts. Help appreciated.

Love the idea of sharing what you are most proud of. I remember hearing someone once say, "Have the kids circle what they are most proud of --- these are their own personal mentors." Perfectly motivating. #TeacherFriends
Whoohoo!!! Happy Anniversary to us!! Many thanks to @KweezleQueen for having the AMAZING idea to start this little chat! See you July 10th #TeacherFriends

For Ss voice & choice apps like @Seesaw👍.https://t.co/9aPqAVkwFn.
Ss write on the question in discussion, they are able to add pictures, comment on each other's work.T has the right to approve of the posts or have Ss rewrite it. this is shared with parents
#teacherfriends But what if our special guests can’t make the writing celebration? Virtual celebrations include all family members and friends! https://t.co/fbDSguVwVR
#teacherfriends Add this one to your stack -- @ruth_ayres and Christi Overman wrote a thoughtful book called “Celebrating Writers.” This will be your go-to guide for motivating, inspiring your authors. https://t.co/rh2ttPdNt9
Thank you Brenna for being such an amazing guest tonight!! I've got at least 25 tabs open on my computer, waiting to be read first thing in the morning! :) #teacherfriends@livewriteteach
"Celebration is to writers what air is to fire." When we get to share what we've worked so hard to construct, we keep growing. When we teach kids how to give each other really thoughtful compliments,we want to do more of that thing, right? #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends We distribute #AlternativeSeating at https://t.co/wuux2Fumde and are happy to process your POs.

#TeacherFriends I blogged this week about making @Seesaw part of the summer before kindergarten! We are enjoying it, and parents get a wake up call re just how much is expected in k. Lots of collaborative efforts going on between Ps, Ss, and T. https://t.co/UErgqBh4cy
#TeacherFriends Heidi (Heidi Songs), Drew Giles, & I just presented a "PHD" "Palma, Heidi & Drew" workshop for Pre-K - K teachers in NorCal. So much FUN!
#TeacherFriends I choose two Ss each morning to be our recorders for writers workshop. They round up Ss the rest of the day and interview them or take a picture. We share during snack time.We also use activities I upload to @Seesaw to annotate. eg., draw an A thing and label it
#teacherfriends So, here’s a little parting motivation to dip your toe into writing workshop with next year’s class. Let’s support each other as we try out some new ideas! You know you want to... :) https://t.co/PIjXjymfHk
I'm also doing a lot of planning for my new teaching position. I'll be launching our TK program at my school. Help and suggestions welcomed. #teacherfriends
Thank you, #teacherfriends, for inviting me into tonight’s conversation about writing workshop. It's been super to hang out, hatch new ideas, refine old ones, and learn together. Please reach out if I can be helpful to you! Happy to. Night!
