#games4ed Archive
#games4ed discussions cover ways in which gaming can be used in education. Games mirror the way the human mind was designed to learn. They motivate players to take risks and actions, persevere through failures, set and achieve increasingly difficult goals, and devote attention, time, and effort to acquiring knowledge and skills. All this while the game is tracking the player’s actions and assessing the player’s achievements and skills. Isn’t this what we want from education?

Hey Mark! have your costume picked out yet? I should have picked up a head at !
I always thought that as an adult I would enjoy eating my children's candy, standing over them while they slept...
did your little guy have fun on Saturday?
Hey guys! We're from and ready for the chat!
Nathan and egging the Pearson office
Hey hey Katie here. Slayer of info aka teacher librarian in Cali. I live spooky Halloween decorations.
Welcome! So thrilled to have you join in!
I know right! Our school is doing a candy theme, I'm thinking the creepy candy man from the opening of Willy Wonka 1971
q1 for me its the critical thinking skills required for those unscripted responses
Hiya Katie! Glad to have you and your greatness again tonight!
great! What did you present?
Thanks for hosting, ! Our fav part of has to be 80s horror flicks! https://t.co/NnzlwsrVHZ
Welcome! So thrilled to have you join in!
So glad you're here! This topic is right up your alley!!
I think we are doing Alice in Wonderland to coincide with our musical this year
A1: Kids from 8 to 80, actually. We learn to present grounded arguments and respectfully listen to contrary views
listening to opp opinions is really hard for S's, esp in middle grades
A1: debating forces kids to think about the issues, research, formulate strong arguments, etc.
first you have to know what an hombre is in order to insult one
Milk or dark? (because white doesn't count as real chocolate ;)
Love debates, because Ss can plan points and counter points. Have you done philosophical chairs? Great debate tool
debates are the best form of evidenced based arguments
And in upper grades, too!
brings the bs right out in the open
A1. Civility! They learn that there's a diversity of thought.
of course! but hopefully more patient by 16, right? :-)
A1: Debate allows them to hear their own voice, which makes them think before they speak. (Can you tell I have a teen at home?)
A1 to process information quickly and make reasonable responses
A1: I'm thinking about asking DonaldTrump if he wants to debate my 5th graders. who would win?
I think so. Is that where there are two sides and the kids can go back and forth?
yes it does. White chocolate is awesome
Um, yes. Most of them. Not all :(
A1: To help Ss see their are two sides to every coin
LOL congrats to you! I've got about 8 months before I've got a teen...nervous about it!
Yes, it's a great one, also, not exactly a debate, but great discussion is Cat-Fish. Learned about it from
I love having S's argue a point they dont agree with..really makes them dig deep
we know who would win and we know who would say he won
A1 Philosophical chairs is a fantastic activity! 👊 https://t.co/v12vJDx4a8
Love debates, because Ss can plan points and counter points. Have you done philosophical chairs? Great debate tool
Like that actually needs an answer! :)
socratic circles, where an innner circle debates while an outer circle takes notes, are great reflection activities
glad to hear it - he's a super cute kid!
. In class competitions with edgames makes a lot of sense. We've seen some positive results.
You will love the new chapter. Don't listen to anyone who's negative about it. Challenges produce opportunities!
Had quite a few Ts loving the geocaching map!
A1 who to accept other people's thought
wonder if it would be rigged though?
Great answer! And glad to have you back, Mark!
It's so funny! I keep getting such positive feedback about that game! Thank you for using it.
S's love debates even more in character...works really well in history class
We shouldn't and don't have to always agree. My eyes roll when students say they agree with what everyone has said
A2: They can learn to debate who might play which role or story.
A2: Literature lends itself beautifully to LARP debates. Putting Lady Macbeth on trial. Or Capulets and Montagues.
right cause its a cop out answer..not digging deep
A2: Debate is totally a LARP! We need to leverage LARP in every curricular area - authentic experiential learning
Kids love to be in the time period...stokes their imagination https://t.co/R91GIIj90x
A2: Literature lends itself beautifully to LARP debates. Putting Lady Macbeth on trial. Or Capulets and Montagues.
A2 larping crosses a line that I am not willing to cross
geocaching map? I think I need to see that!
Ts love to see an easy way to get started and that is relevant. Using it tomorrow with our 6th graders.
the games creates makes it easy to be "in character" no matter what the topic
A2 Bring LARP to debates with historically accurate characters and judge/queen. Dress the part; be the part.
The more authentic the experience the more engaging it is! https://t.co/uZE7EHJGjf
A2 Bring LARP to debates with historically accurate characters and judge/queen. Dress the part; be the part.
I can share it with you, if it's not in the MIE resources or on site.
Was honored to hear shared it with some EU educators and they loved it to.
A2: I think did had his students as historical figures arguing who was more important. Sounded amazing
If any are local enough, join us for on Sat- Sunset Diner, Green Brook, NJ special guests
A2: Debates and LARP help sts realize the conquests we have as a modern society came from ppl wanting to make things better
LARP is easier in ELA and SS but i think we need great ideas for doing it in Sci and math as well. gotta think more about those
I am at this week (& away from Tweetdeck), so just following tonight. Keep up the good work everyone!
Snake Oil is so much fun! It was a hit at our thanks to
fantastic!! I pulled all maps down for don't recall seeing it - maybe slipped past me
Q3: What game elements are found in debates...or can be effective in debates?
q3 obv answer to me is their is a clear mastery component the "winner" is demonstrating..only one side can win
although mastery can be shown in a losing effort :-)
I could see Ss as a plant cell versus animal cell debating which is better (all the while explaining structures)
Hey Jason - great to see you!
A3 debate is point counter point like most games. Make a move and respond
best thing about debate is the non prepared answers..thinking on your feet is a real world skill
A3 Lots of problem solving. Trying to stay one step ahead of your opponent and predict their next move! https://t.co/GjQMFwLQ6G
Q3: What game elements are found in debates...or can be effective in debates?
A3: I love the strategy when Ss have really researched. They start planning their "moves" anticipating what opposition does
Agreed. Turn based combat. Could involve hit points/damage taken, voted on by student audience during!
sounds like a great hs debate..i just want s's to prepare:-)
having S's as debate judges really ramps up competition
I like this idea. It's a way to get audience involved, especially in large classes https://t.co/t3gBhuQpgj
Agreed. Turn based combat. Could involve hit points/damage taken, voted on by student audience during!
Love this. They must develop a game plan before the debate starts! https://t.co/SNhAjC2XgC
A3: I love the strategy when Ss have really researched. They start planning their "moves" anticipating what opposition does
gotta head out to drive the cheer carpool home. Have a great night everyone! I believe I'll be moderating this crazy party nxt wk
Definitely! I love having students judge. And when I can, I have the P come in, too!
A3: The art of bluffing and calling someone else's bluff; the art of storytelling and creating mystery
My favorite math debate in 4th grade...Is a square a rectangle? Fav in science...Is a tomato a fruit?
Yes, because you are a rock star! And I've got to go direct a drama practice :)
moderators are dropping like flies!
q4 taking points off for interrupting other S's is pretty effective for me
Those are fantastic ones! Truly, debate can be added to any class!
yeah has some great ideas
set the rules early and be clear with the points
Little late! Have Ss dress up & debate in Character! Or debate as an Avatar. Haha, even role dice to determine how to respond
points for team collaboration helps everyone stay involved...as said
A5: Have students track certain areas, such as providing a quote, statistic, etc. Then debaters earn points for what they've used
What roles have you used in the past?
Gotta run all! Thanks for helping me remember how important and engaging debate can be in my classes!
A4: In whole class debate, I give Ss tokens so they can only speak so many times. Tokens R colored, so we may be on "green" round
Have a great night, Jason!
Really good idea, especially for those kids who love to be center stage! https://t.co/wLqjH3TzML
A4: In whole class debate, I give Ss tokens so they can only speak so many times. Tokens R colored, so we may be on "green" round
Are all games play? Is all play, games?
A4: Turn taking, wait time, routines and sequences
Love the onscreen timer idea! And having a student in charge of it, too!
Yes taking quotes, evidence, questions, etc. is powerful. Great with Socratic seminar, too https://t.co/s5czyzsgEM
A5: Have students track certain areas, such as providing a quote, statistic, etc. Then debaters earn points for what they've used
I've used for debates before. Makes a debate more like Around The Horn on
all games can certainly be shaped as play
Defend. . Haha, just kidding, but that would be a good debate.
that would be a good meta debate topic some night
putting S's into small groups and changing their roles throughout a debate can help
Ok, gonna pass out now, was up early for an Training on Good Night
A5: four teams sends a "tribute" for each round to the middle of the room. Can get more # Ss into the debate
oh you're going hunger games debate! love it!
Great idea! And keeps them changing and not becoming redundant
does the S die if they lose the round? lol
Great idea with the comic strip...I love that! Creative!
A5: Students can be dvidied into debate teams, moderators, timekeepers, notateakers or secretaries, and adjudicators
alright great chatting tonight..see everyone next week!
Our penultimate question of the night! How do we make watching a debate outside the classrm more gamelike? https://t.co/4cyB4ud8lu
Thanks for stopping by, Aryah!
A6: a BINGO sheet with a list of fallacies, faults, and evidence examples. Write down example in square when heard
An excellent idea for them to be more aware of how well they are or are not getting their message across. https://t.co/P1bZVJX8Bw
A6: a BINGO sheet with a list of fallacies, faults, and evidence examples. Write down example in square when heard
A6 Ss track quirks- use of um and like. Number of dirty looks. Debate isn't just about what is said.
A7: Social media and blogs - official and unofficial ones. They provide us with different views and angles
Thanks for another great chat tonight! As always, great ideas...I'll be stealing some for sure! You all rock!
Good stuff, tonight, sorry I couldn't debate more with some of you- was in and out of the chat.
