Kristen from Atlanta! Former K-5th iPad Lab Technology Teacher to my newest endeavor K-12 Instructional Technology Specialist! I Love Teaching Teachers Create>Uconsume #AppleEDUchat
A1: Creating = Critical Thinking! It helps the brain fire up in all areas! It all depends on what they are consuming and what it is inspiring! In classroom, it all about CHOICE. Give Ss tools and space to share learning through creating! #AppleEDUChat
A1 Encouraging students to be creative helps them to develop socially, emotionally and mentally! For my classroom it means all iPad projects look different and SS take great pride in their creations & ask to view others projects. #AppleEDUchat
A1: There is just so much potential in student created curriculum! My students thrive when they invest in developing the content. It always means more! #AppleEDUChat
A1: Our students will need to have these skills for the jobs that we are preparing them for. For my first grade classroom, this means offering choices for ways my students can complete tasks. #AppleEDUChat
Introducing the tools and available resources in the room is the goal early on! Letting students build with what they love makes it enjoyable for all! #AppleEDUChat
A1: Many of the barriers for learners to create have been removed. Learners can be authors, artists, musicians, and whatever else they are passionate about. #AppleEDUchat
A1: Creating means our students are empowered to make positive change. They can use their gifts to create something that is needed in our world 🌎 #AppleEduChat
A1: One Word: Blogger. Ten years ago this word did not exist. That job did not exist. Someone had to create it. Our world and 15 years??? I don’t think anyone knows what that looks like. Our classrooms need to prepare students for a world that hasn’t been created! #AppleEDUChat
A1) Through creation Ss empower their creativity while they learn more deeply. We create for ourselves & are trying to for other in the building. #AppleEDUchat
A1: Students retain what they do and what they interact with, not with facts that they regurgitate, or that they can find the answer in the text without thinking. Creating is meaningful.
#appleeduchat
So true! Another job that didn't exist - social media manager. Teaching our kids to create content reminds them that they also have an audience and a message to craft. This applies in any class, at any age #AppleEDUchat
Q2 What is a lesson in your learning environment that has shifted from consumption to creation? How did you make the leap? #AppleEDUchat#everyonecancreate
A1 Creating content makes learning accessible for all - low floor and high ceiling... consuming can be aimed at the average (and we all know that doesn't exist). #AppleEDUchat
Absolutely! Who can even imagine the careers that will be developed around #3dprinting#laserdesign and more! We have such possibilities ahead of us. #AppleEDUChat
I also like how when kids create they often collaborate as well. They see what others are doing and ask them about it learning from each other in the midst of the event. #AppleEDUchat
A1: As our students grow older and enter the workforce, one quality that distinguishes those who make things happen from those who “go with the flow”, is how much they create. #AppleEDUchat
A2- The first thing that comes to mind is @winland_mms math class where her students create their own ways to solve problems and showcase them through video! It’s awesome!! #AppleEDUchat
A2: Much of our PL has shifted to a focus on creation. We want our educators comfortable creating along with their learners. #AppleEDUchat#EveryoneCanCreate
Q2: In my new role, I teach pre-service teachers. This week was about TPACK, and instead of giving kids information they created videos expressing their understanding & application in a guided inquiry using @GooseChaseEDU. SO MUCH BETTER than me talking at them :) #AppleEDUchat
A1 Students will be creating for the rest of their lives, so it’s important for them to master these skills early on. Also, this ability applies to all subjects and disciplines. #AppleEDUchat
A2: I recently used @Flipgrid to make "channels" where students responded directly to me. I called it, "Flipgrid TV." They used all kinds of different apps to work on their ELA assignments.
https://t.co/koviKmDo7Q#appleeduchat
A2: Learning about erosion & deposition used to be the WORST lessons. Slide show death. I changed to asking students to create erosion prevention methods in an engineering challenge with a stream table, mixed materials, & #3dprinting Add in Clips videos…amazing! #AppleEDUChat
A2: retelling and sequencing stories read aloud with #LEGO and Stopmotion. By creating the events from the story with this purposeful manipulative and making a movie Ss were engaged in learning the literacy skill #AppleEDUChat
A2: I used to use content video clips for students to watch and then assess after, now they are CREATING the Clips, annotating and narrating to show that they understand! Yay for Clips! 🙌🏻 #AppleEduChat
A2: I have shifted most of my History to PBL. My history was boring and dry, I first started to incorporate making movies into history (I saw my wife @mindyjphillips using it successfully) so I incorporated it. And now being 1:1 anything is possible #appleeduchat
A2) Lessons changed with @waukeshaone rollout. Changing to creation allowed every student to participate. Reading & writing tasks - they couldn’t show what they knew. They were equal partners on that change - ownership & pride gave them determination. #AppleEDUchat
No one likes being bored. Especially me. I got a shock the other day. My student aides told me that their aide period is the best class and they are learning more here than anywhere else. I had them learning to use the laser cutter. #AppleEDUChat
Hi Jessica! I love TPACK! It all about that sweet spot where everything connects! You need Pedagogy, Content Knowledge, and Technology! Miss you friend. #AppleEDUchat
We need our generation of learners to be educational disruptors who are I afraid to take risks and challenge what currently exists in a creative, meaningful and positive way! #appleeduchat
In Maine this spring, I met a math teacher that had her students use Keynote animations to show their thinking as they solved math problems. They could then export as video and narrate. So cool! #AppleEDUchat
I also like how when kids create they often collaborate as well. They see what others are doing and ask them about it learning from each other in the midst of the event. #AppleEDUchat
Miss YOU, @TeachingJake!! I was so pumped to hear those future teachers talking about how to get to that sweet spot and analyzing their lesson ideas! Made my teacher heart so happy! #AppleEDUchat
In reply to
@TeachingJake, @GooseChaseEDU, @TeachingJake
A2: Also…LOVE teaching physics concepts with @Sphero Pulling in slow motion video with iPad and evaluating motion…brilliant! Engineering projects have never been so fun! @SpheroEdu always has awesome plans to work with. #AppleEDUChat
We need this current generation of learners to be educational disruptors who are unafraid to take risks and challenge what currently exists in a creative, meaningful and positive way! #appleeduchat
PREACH!!! I am so tired of sitting in my own PL experiences that seem to break every good rule of learning. Ts need to get excited about creating too! #AppleEDUchat
A2: Where was this chat yesterday? We were learning about the Berlin Airlift & how they planned to bring in 1,000's of lbs of food every day. I should have had them create solutions. #NextYear#AppleEduChat
Students definitely get invested in these projects! Amazing what some simple tools can do to encourage students to dig deeper. We will be using this as a choice for our Martian book study. #AppleEDUChat
So true, Mike! Creation leads to ownership, rather than fleeting understanding or memorization. Btw Trying to keep up but in and out of service - almost home #AppleEDUchat
A2 Our office runs a training program for faculty who are learning to teach online, and instead of giving them a list of popular apps and web-based tools, we have them pick one they’re interested in, try it, and report back to their colleagues on their experience. #AppleEDUchat
A3: My kids loved to create with coding apps! Taking coding instruction beyond structured curriculums to using coding apps to create and share their learning. https://t.co/PAU751OUfD#AppleEDUChat
A1: As students create they incorporate and practice skills they will need to be successful in college and careers – skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration. Creation bring Ss to the higher zones of Bloom’s Taxonmy. #AppleEduChat
A3: Students took screenshots in Google Earth street view, then recorded voice over explaining what they learned about that location in Spanish. #appleeduchat
A3: my favorite activity last year was app smashing @BookCreatorApp and @DoInkTweets for students to share research they had gathered to support their unit of study! We all loved it and it worked seamlessly! #AppleEDUchat
A3- So far this year…my students have been super pumped about using Apple Pencils with the iPads to draw out their science labs with Keynote. This was with our Hungry, Hungry @Sphero Engineering Challenge… https://t.co/0eLaukaxf1#AppleEDUChat
A3: My first graders always love doing research projects on local wildlife here in southwest Florida. After researching, writing a script, and collecting media, they create a green screen project where they present their findings.
https://t.co/rN6TVg5IUO#appleeduchat
A3: Right now my students are in love with @Plotagon. My wife showed it to me last year, and I showed my students and they love it. Right now I have a group creating a project about Calvin and Hobbes. It is a great app, gets Ss writing without them realizing it.#appleeduchat
A1: too many times Learning is something that happens to students. They have no ownership of it. When kids create, they own it. #EveryoneCanCreate#AppleEDUchat
A3: Other favorite was using Clips to record reflections as students explored the Chicago History museum. Turned in a single video of reflections. #AppleEduChat
A3 I think overall creating a program (usually with @scratch)is the most impactful to my students. They’re challenged, they build persistence & when their program works they’ve creating something that took so much work. The sense of pride is amazing and inspiring! #AppleEDUChat
A1: Our students will need to have these skills for the jobs that we are preparing them for. For my first grade classroom, this means offering choices for ways my students can complete tasks. #AppleEDUChat
Yes! Too many times I see teachers reach for a TPT worksheet for both content and assessment. Less worksheets = more creating - deeper learning. #AppleEduChat
A3: So far this year, students are loving Clips and @AdobeSpark Video for their ease of use. Keeps the focus on the creative process and the content rather than learning the tool. I'm using Apple Pencils and Keynote for the first time this week, and I'm so excited! #AppleEDUchat
A3: SO many to choose from! Keynote animations to show processes, Keynote to create infographics, Pages books to teach younger kids, Pages to brainstorm and plan labs, Clips to tell a story, Flipgrid to share it all with everyone! #AppleEDUchat
A3: My favorites are the ones were students incorporate multiple forms of media and have an opportunity to publish. When I worked with #APLang Ss we published books for other Ss taking the same class. https://t.co/Z0gaSZ98fm#AppleEDUChat
A3: my #FirstGrade💕 @seesaw on their iPads. they are able to be creative and respond in a variety of ways to meet their learning needs. Which makes me happy!! @Seesaw also smashes well with #Apple and other apps #AppleEDUchat
A3 My world is educator PL, so... I love giving them a chance to create to demonstrate understanding of content and/or pedagogy. My fav is when they’re using the camera to capture learning. #AppleEDUchat
This is AMAZING! And I love that she wore a "Save the Ocean" Shirt! This girl nailed it! And we would have never seen that had she simply written a paragraph. #AppleEDUchat
Hi everyone, jumping on a bit late.
A1: haven’t used the book creation in pages yet, but I love the features! Gave it as an option for Dot Day writing. Love that you can draw and insert photo galleries! #AppleEDUChat
A3 - Always love #sketchnotes to help students visualize learning and ideas! Currently my gr 7 loving sketching in Keynote with our new Apple pencils! #AppleEDUChat
I have been looking into what will makes it easier for the littlest of learners to create. The markup feature on the camera along with drawing, and audio in keynote and pages have become my favorite. No sign in, and no typing. I also really like draw and tell #AppleEDUchat
A3: On a personal level, my 7 year old and I used Clips to film his “Try It Tuesday” videos as part of his homework assignments. He loved the editing and adding the effects! #AppleEDUchat
I gave one of our teachers a PPT to introduce the Question Formulation Technique and a worksheet for the Ss using the QFT for the first time. He sarcastically said, "Thanks for the PPT & Worksheet" #AppleEduChathttps://t.co/dKjyFzXOKP
Q4 How has student creation changed the way your class functions and is organized? How has this enhanced teaching and learning? #AppleEDUchat#EveryoneCanCreate
Shoutout to @theipodteacher - just noticed you on #AppleEDUChat chat and just wanted you to know how much I enjoyed your presentation at the MLTI Summer Institute at Bowdoin College in June. Thanks for the inspiration! #edtech207
A3: My K ELL Ss are are working on creating a class book in #Pages. Beginning writers trace the yellow text then we lower the opacity to show their writing. Ss also practice speaking in complete sentences with audio feature #AppleEDUChat
I always feel like I want to teach all these areas after seeing everyone’s work with students! Except maybe preschool…they scare me. ;) Seriously…amazing opportunities given to students with these tools and support! #AppleEDUChat
A4: It has been empowering! It puts kids in the driving seat and gives them voice and choice in how they share their learning. It also levels the playing field providing more paths that use multiple intelligences! #AppleEDUChat
A4: When we focus on student creation we can facilitate and guide as students grow increasingly more independent. It's empowering for kids and a huge game changer, and I can't imagine going back to teaching any other way! #AppleEDUchat
A3. In the beginning of Feb, my students use the @decoraheaglecam to develop a wide variety of math & science skills that are started in their science journals & then become content for digital media, communicating & collaborating their learning experiences! #AppleEDUchat
A4: creation & innovation is hardly ever done in isolation. My students quickly learn that together is better. I love the communication and collaborative skills that naturally happen during the process #AppleEduChat
A4: From slideshows to infographics to videos. My Ss know that I'll never tell them exactly what to use, but each time I introduce something new for them to explore. They continue to grow. Choice, not recipes. #AppleEduChat
A3 I’ve noticed that students seem to like making their own videos as long as they’re given freedom and flexibility to interpret the assignment. #AppleEDUchat
A4: creating has changed my classes because it’s allowed kids the freedom to make their own learning. I don’t have to grade 30 of the same thing. More exciting for me. #AppleEDUchat
A4: Creating opens up such a new relationship. Working with students as a team to build is such a more powerful way to connect and educate. It’s not about me telling them what to learn…it’s about discover what ways are best for all to learn. #AppleEDUChat
A4: The biggest impact for me has been hearing my students voices. Being able to hear them read or explain their thinking demonstrates mastery in a way that paper/pencil activities can't. #AppleEDUchat
A4: creation & innovation is hardly ever done in isolation. My students quickly learn that together is better. I love the communication and collaborative skills that naturally happen during the process #AppleEduChat
I looked at the wrong set of questions earlier through the hashtag. A1: the device is another tool to really enhance the learning. I love giving students a choice in how they demonstrate their knowledge, making sure we have apps available that incorporate the 4Cs #AppleEDUChat
A4: As I adopted more of a creation mentality in my classroom, I changed the way it looks. I made the room more functional for group work, and to foster creativity. I teach less and facilitate more. #appleeduchat
A4) No longer teacher led. Young adults have equal voice in what we are learning & often they lead our learning. More ownership for young adults who report they have never worked harder nor enjoyed learning more. #AppleEDUchat
A3. I use the Green Screen app @DoInkTweets to help student join events they normally could not be a part of. These creations then springboard other creation content especially written reflections! https://t.co/2QbRMWZnEK#AppleEDUchat
A4: My classroom is filled with digital tools, resources and supports for students of all levels to successfully complete a center task or project. Ss can collaborate and demonstrate their creativity with also learning literacy and language skills #AppleEDUChat
A3 I’ve noticed that students seem to like making their own videos as long as they’re given freedom and flexibility to interpret the assignment. #AppleEDUchat
And with the littles they can show what they know so much earlier than they could when limited by paper and pencil. I feel this area is just taking off. #AppleEDUchat
A4 #AppleEDUChat This summer I rethought the seating in my classroom. I made spaces for #collaboration a #makerspace, quiet reading area, and some #writing spaces. I was able to get some mats to let my students choose the floor for class discussions or chairs. #EDT598#edtech207
A2: so many great examples in our buildings. I love seeing the students use @SpheroEdu for creating a colony and then coding their presentation. Love seeing students create their own books to retell events from history. #AppleEDUChat#innovate135
Q2 What is a lesson in your learning environment that has shifted from consumption to creation? How did you make the leap? #AppleEDUchat#everyonecancreate
A4: Even before I started incorporating technology into, the act of creating was always a priority for my Ss. Technology gave my Ss more options: the ability to do things like make movies, compose songs, & mix media,
creating opportunities for high-level learning. #AppleEDUChat
Q4 How has student creation changed the way your class functions and is organized? How has this enhanced teaching and learning? #AppleEDUchat#EveryoneCanCreate
Agree! I'm seeing some of my students just two hours a week; that time has to be used productively, and that's more likely when Ss are really engaged #AppleEduChat
My class feels the same way. They don't want to see 33 of the same version of a Rock, Paper, Scissors app. They are all trying to outdo each other. They are going to learn way more than I ever planned. #AppleEduChat
A3: My first graders always love doing research projects on local wildlife here in southwest Florida. After researching, writing a script, and collecting media, they create a green screen project where they present their findings.
https://t.co/rN6TVg5IUO#appleeduchat
I also feel like it leveled the playing field as it gives Ss so many different ways tho use their personal strengths to showcase their learning. No-one has to fit into a box anymore. #AppleEDUchat
Q5: How does student creation open doors to empowerment and stuvoice? How does student creation work well with student voice and student choice? #AppleEDUChat
A4 Creating content can take up a lot of time and resources. I think students eventually get to a point where they realize there’s value to the planning process and they start thinking ahead. #AppleEDUchat
A5 Giving students creative rights in their work let's their brain shift into soaring speed because the sky is the limit! They love thinking outside of the box and I love seeing what they come up with-Genius Students! #AppleEduChat
A5: If students are supported & celebrated as they create, voice strengthens & confidence builds. Putting yourself out there with creative endeavors isn’t always easy. Making risk taking, creative ventures the NORM is our job. Then, student voice builds. #AppleEDUChat
A5: allowing students to create lets them know that we trust their judgement. It lets them know there is more to life than just another worksheet or bubble test. #AppleEDUchat
This gave me an idea...my Ss could create videos of words for our phonics skills for the week! #AppleEDUchat
I LOVE this community! Sharing and getting ideas!!
And they get to use both sides at the same time. They are being creative and analytical at the same time. More neural connections = more and deeper learning. #AppleEduChat
A5: By giving kids options and effective tools, they take learning to a personal level -- they learn more and its meaningful to them - they can focus on their strengths and feel confident in their work #AppleEduChat
Having to cut out a little early tonight, but LOVING all the ideas in #AppleEDUchat this evening!! Thanks for hosting @KristenBrooks77 and @TeachingJake! Can't wait to scroll back through tomorrow and find even more inspiration!!
#StuVoice and creation takes engagement up a notch to empowerment. Ss are owning their learning and creating new knowledge, making connections #AppleEDUchat
A5: What I have noticed with allowing my students to use their creativity in class as a voice to demonstrate their learning, I see them working harder to create something better each time. Outdo themselves (and the other groups) #appleeduchat
This is so cool! I love how you can see the writing & letter formation (says the former 1st grade teacher in me that is analyzing handwriting)! #AppleEDUChat
A4: I see many more teachers giving options for flexible seating and student choice with final creations. Rubrics for learning targets in knowing all projects won’t look the same. Teachers are open to learning from students and listening to their voice. #AppleEDUChat
Q4 How has student creation changed the way your class functions and is organized? How has this enhanced teaching and learning? #AppleEDUchat#EveryoneCanCreate
A5: When we get kids creating for an authentic audience they greatly enhance a positive digital footprint. I know several who've been "discovered" and offered professional opportunities from school assignments posted on the web. #AppleEDUChat
Q5: How does student creation open doors to empowerment and stuvoice? How does student creation work well with student voice and student choice? #AppleEDUChat
A5) Ss are able to be themselves rather than trying to be what they think I want. Humbling to watch them share their voices & become empowered. #AppleEDUchat
A5: I LOVE watching our Ss when they are in the creative flow. There is an intensity and engagement that is palpable. As they share, they find their voice and inspiration! #AppleEduChat
A5: It really brings out the leadership in our students. Stepping out of their comfort zone to teach at our staff district summer PD and traveling to ISTE. They are excited and want to showcase what they learn and can create! #AppleEDUChat
Q5: How does student creation open doors to empowerment and stuvoice? How does student creation work well with student voice and student choice? #AppleEDUChat
Golf game this year has been a struggle. My brain was just not in it. Next season will be better. My #lose25gain30campaign is in full swing. Getting fitted on Thursday next week. #AppleEDUchat
I love that intensity! And their passion for making sure they get it "just right" because it is their vision and passion. Love witnessing that ownership! #AppleEDUchat
A5: I enjoy seeing student's personalities as they create! When they collaborate and create, a synergy develops and the incredible happens! #AppleEduChat
I love that intensity! And their passion for making sure they get it "just right" because it is their vision and passion. Love witnessing that ownership! #AppleEDUchat
A6 Students are running the show! They are in charge of their collaborations & discovery! I am the FACILITATOR OF LEARNING! The students are teaching each other! 💜#AppleEDUChat
A5 Isn't this all about student perspective???... Creation allows us to peek inside their mind to begin to understand the connections they are able to make and value they have to contribute. #AppleEDUchat
Love this, Marc - they can explore, apply, and then share so that everyone's path is unique that the learning can be collectively advanced #GreatIdea#AppleEDUchat
A5: When we give students opportunities to create & when we leave room for Ss to make their own decisions, we also give them opportunities to take ownership, develop pride & show accountability in their work. #AppleEduChat
Q5: How does student creation open doors to empowerment and stuvoice? How does student creation work well with student voice and student choice? #AppleEDUChat
A6: There is a balance. Ss need to consume before they can create. By designing lessons with workflows that allow Ss to create, Ss construct meaning in wonderful ways on a regular basis! I love a culture of creation! #appleEDUchat
A6 I think they prefer to create instead of consume. They’ve been consuming for most of their academic careers, and it gets to the point where they’re just bored with it. They’d rather be active. #AppleEDUchat
A6: When creating, my students find relevance in topics that they never thought that they would connect to. Ask students what they think about geology…meh. Ask them to create seismic safe buildings and develop PSA Clips about them…yeah! #AppleEDUChat
A6: there are so many more meaningful conversations. Not only are students teaching one another, but they are making more connections between content areas. They are also inspiring others to try new creations. #AppleEDUChat
A5: What I have noticed with allowing my students to use their creativity in class as a voice to demonstrate their learning, I see them working harder to create something better each time. Outdo themselves (and the other groups) #appleeduchat
A6: Allowing learners the freedom to create rather than just consume makes your curriculum more authentic. You can make it a heck of a lot more fun, too! #AppleEDUchat#EveryoneCanCreate
My students are just getting into it and are LOVING it! I watched an 8th grade boy spend an entire study hall drawing a cicada for his #SciComm project. The intensity and satisfaction when does was amazing! #AppleEDUChat
A6) Our mindset is set on creation, consumption is not our 1st or 2nd choice. We create a proposal for consumables to help us evaluate if there are other options before purchase. #AppleEDUchat
We run the program five times a year, and each cohort adds their reviews to one giant master list that’s now 3-4 years old. Sometimes an app/tool has multiple reviews, but you see different perspectives that way. #AppleEDUchat
Supporting them as they become critical and kind givers of feedback is my goal this year. I want to see more depth in their evaluations of each other. #AppleEDUChat
A6: I have found that as I enter year 20, sharing creation tools and watching students bloom, has made ME excited to learn and grow each day. I hope this excitement is making my students excited to be there each day, too!
#AppleEDUchat
Thanks so much for joining in the fun! I hope you are leaving with new Educator #PLN friends & lots of awesome ideas to try in your classroom! #AppleEDUchat Create>Uconsume! Great Job tonight to my co-host @TeachingJake
Fantastic conversation tonight on #AppleEDUChat I always leave these chats with my heart renewed! Thank you, @KristenBrooks77 and @TeachingJake for the great moderation!
