#leadupchat focuses on school leadership broadly, culture, changing paradigms, and the growth mindset. It's an Ed movement focused on Leadership, Culture, Growth and Shifts on Saturdays at 8:30am CST, founded by Jeff Veal (@heffrey) and Nathan Lang (@nalang1).
Welcome to #LeadUpChat. Please share your name and where you are from. Thrilled to be co-hosting with my better half @VealHeidi today! Going to be a dynamic hour of learning together.
Morning tribe! Thrilled to be in the raft with you today and @VealHeidi. I'm a secondary administrator in North Texas, a husband, a dad, and co-creator of #Leadupchat! Ready to talk leading with a 360 life!
That’s so frustrating. There’s a lot of info about #RTI out there that’s “commercial grade” not “scientific grade.” It’s disappointing to see the spread of misinformation like this. #spedchat#satchat#leadupchat#inclusiveeducators
Good morning, #leadupchat! My name is Jeff Kilner, science teacher & cofacilitator of our school's makerspace. Also serve staff as co-planner & facilitator of our site's professional learning team in southern Delaware.

A1 Leading a 360 life. Look all around you all the time. Reflect on what's behind you and make moving forward as great as possible. Take it all in, all the time. #edet543#leadupchat
A1: I've not heard that expression before, but I immediately think about the power of circle time, connecting shoulder to shoulder, knee to knee, eye to eye, sharing balance and well-roundedness while you take cues from colleagues to stretch and grow. #leadupchat
A1 A 360 life is a full circle. I think it means that the inside (your beliefs, opinions, heart) are inside of everything you do, and the outside (professional, family, social, etc) is balanced around the center. #leadupchat
A1 I’ve never heard the phrase “360 life” but to me it sounds like living a full and meaningful life guided by values we can enact in a variety of contexts. #leadupchat
A1: I think it means being purposeful in all parts of your life. Being balanced and ensuring that you prioritize the important and live in the purposeful parts and try to control chaos and turbulence as much as possible. #leadupchat
A1: I think of a circle, that circle being divided into different aspects of my life both personal and professional, but the divisions move and change constantly. #leadupchat
A1: First thought is whirlwind - the complexity of life.
Second thought is balance - finding peace and satisfaction in people, purpose, and wholeness. #leadupchat
A1: To me it means trying to include a 360 of life; all areas, comprehensive. It also brings to mind taking something that is not working and doing a 360 to turn it in a positive, new direction! #leadupchat
To me 360 life means to make sure that all aspects are taken care of. Work, family, friends, and personal. When one is out of whack, EVERYTHING is out of whack #LeadUpChat
A1: Interesting that this 360 degree phrase is used because I use that phrase with my #PBL students. We practice seeing the world this way. I can share examples with others if interested. #LeadUpChat
A1 taking things in from all aspects, must say a vision of an octopus with tentacles dipped in every area comes to mind which can be overwhelming #LeadUpChat
A1: the 360 Life is encompassing, encouraging, rough sometimes, beautiful at others. A perspective to see & do “all the way around”. It’s taking care of the little things, the big things, the job things, and the YOU things. #LeadupChat
A1:. That life intertwines between work, family, social, leisure. Thanks hat it is all connected for the greater good and as educators we are often at the center of it all. #leadupchat
A1: Keeping your vision moving forward, but without forgetting where you’ve been and the successes and failures that have helped you grow to get to where you are #leadupchat
A1 being well rounded which to me means being balanced. As one bucket is getting drained another one is filling up to keep you on the level. #leadupchat
For me it’s all about balance and fullness. Must find balance mentally, physically, and spiritually. Must live a whole life and take care of all three because when one is neglected you can’t be your best self. A full life to me means giving back and helping others. #leadupchat
A1 To me living a 360 Life is living a well-rounded/balanced life. It’s about taking care of your heart, body, mind and soul. It means living life as an experience & an adventure, being open to risks & to many different points of view. Let’s model learning adventures. #leadupchat
A1: Passion and play are part of work and free time. Rather than worrying about "work-life balance," I immerse myself in whatever I'm up to. #leadupchat
A1) It means balance and alignment. With respect to balance, it's devoting time to the health of the aspects of life: family, friends, work, health, spirituality. etc. For alignment, it's having a consistent set of values that govern how we live & actually living it.
#leadupchat
A1: Leading a "360 LIfe" means to pay attention to life instead of getting hyperfocused one area. which is easy to do. Emily, a character from "Our Town" said, "Living people don't notice life, do they?" We MUST notice, be grateful & be empowered. #leadupchat
Life 360 = I’m on a swivel 24/7. The job of a leader/educator never stops. We’re constantly learning, thinking about ways to better educate our students. The future is dependent upon us.....
#leadupchat
A1: Balancing and connecting personal and professional. Ensuring your passion is backed by authenticity. That’s when I feel I’m living a 360 Life. #leadupchat
A1: Living a 360 Life means that I give and receive guidance in all directions. It doesn't matter who you are, I know I can learn something from you! I am also willing to lead up the chain, not just down. #leadupchat
A1 A 360 Life means living with intentionality in all areas of my life. Being influential & consistent with who I am & what I stand for at home, with my family, at work, & in my friendships. #leadupchat
A1: For me it’s full circle, which happens 180 degrees at a time. 180 degrees of doing. 180 degrees of reflecting, a constant cycle of turning myself upside down so I can find my feet again and be better. That’s the gist of my #project180. #leadupchat
A1: A true leader's life is a 360 lifestyle. Always looking behind and ahead. Keeping track of everyone and everything. Trying to stay ahead of some and keeping up with others! I am exhausted just thinking about it!! Lol!! #leadupchat
A1: I think about being at the center with your core values, and then from there, you can see the ripple - like in water - everything ideally comes from that center. #leadupchat
A1 - God has made me for His purpose & given me specific gifts and skills. A "360 Life" means using those gifts and skills to fulfill His purpose in every aspect of my life. #wawr2018#leadupchat
A1: To me leading a 360 life means finding joy in what you do, what you have and who you’re with every day. You don’t always have to be happy-but you should be joyful! #LeadUpChat
For me it’s all about balance and fullness. Must find balance mentally, physically, and spiritually. Must live a whole life and take care of all three because when one is neglected you can’t be your best self. A full life to me means giving back and helping others. #leadupchat
A1. 360 indicates full circle. When something’s out of balance-too much or not enough-so are we. We are best when we our hearts and heads are aligned and our intentions and efforts match. Requires constant reflection and an intentionality and deliberateness daily. #Leadupchat
A1 Never heard that phrase before but my first thought is the importance of making sure our core values/beliefs are the center of everything we do in each area of our lives. #leadupchat
A1: A true leader's life is a 360 lifestyle. Always looking behind and ahead. Keeping track of everyone and everything. Trying to stay ahead of some and keeping up with others! I am exhausted just thinking about it!! Lol!! #leadupchat
A1: I'm reminded of the 360 feedback process for leaders--gives you a full perspective of your leadership and the impact you are having. For me, a 360 life is one where you pause and really see the people around you. Reflect on your impact and adjust when needed. #leadupchat
sidebar....so do you and @VealHeidi sit next to each other during this chat-or separate rooms? Incredible how well you both model living a life worth leading! #leadupchat
I think a “360 life” for our students is enacting their values in all domains: academic, artistic, athletic, social, civic, familial, physical, and spiritual.
#leadupchat
A1 A 360 life is a full circle. I think it means that the inside (your beliefs, opinions, heart) are inside of everything you do, and the outside (professional, family, social, etc) is balanced around the center. #leadupchat
A1 My first thought is #VR which isn't way off. We need to be aware of all that is in our sphere and take time to honor the blessings around us every day. #leadupchat
A1 A 360 life is full circle, well rounded. Remembering to complete the cycle and not always staying where you are comfortable and ensuring all areas of your life are balanced. #leadupchat
That's amazing-- I've stopped worrying about balance because I just assume that whatever is in front of me needs to be handled. Sometimes big things happen that need more attention and take more time, but it's appropriate. #leadupchat
A1: 360 Life is finding the balance...and, recognizing that it is not a destination, but rather a journey of being better today and continuing to push for growth in all areas. #leadupchat
A1: For me it’s full circle, which happens 180 degrees at a time. 180 degrees of doing. 180 degrees of reflecting, a constant cycle of turning myself upside down so I can find my feet again and be better. That’s the gist of my #project180. #leadupchat
A1 I think of 360 degrees as ‘full circle’ so I guess it would be all the efforts you’ve made having an impact in all you do. Maybe kind of like seeing the results of your work so living with intention would be my thought. #LeadUpChat
A1: Give 100% of yourself to everything that you do. And always remember what @iamgrandpuba said “what goes around comes back around again”. #LeadUpChat@Principal_EL
In reply to
@heffrey, @iamgrandpuba, @Principal_EL
A1: I live very much in the present, I cannot change the past and cannot know what's happening in the future. My main focus is the here and now. #leadupchat
A1. 360 Living is knowing your WHY! For me, I believe my entire life is for a greater purpose & that my family & work is a calling for a greater purpose beyond myself. #leadupchat
A1: A true leader's life is a 360 lifestyle. Always looking behind and ahead. Keeping track of everyone and everything. Trying to stay ahead of some and keeping up with others! I am exhausted just thinking about it!! Lol!! #leadupchat
Great reminder. I life lived in isolation is not balanced. We need others. We need to experience give and take. We need to learn and teach.
#leadupchat
And find those moments. If you come in early and stay super late, it’s OK to FaceTime your daughter and talk to her and your new grandson for five minutes at lunch. #leadupchat
A1. 360 also brings to mind our need for connection, genuine and authentic connection with others. Living or working in isolation can also create a grand sense of imbalance. #Leadupchat
Haha! Well we try! Today we are side by side. Not always able depending on the littles and life. Today was supposed to be soccer at same time but rained out! Don't let us fool you...we are learning everyday! #Leadupchat
sidebar....so do you and @VealHeidi sit next to each other during this chat-or separate rooms? Incredible how well you both model living a life worth leading! #leadupchat
A 360 life means living & exploring life’s journey! Searching for meaning, belonging. Giving back, making a difference & impact! Leaving people around you feeling better! It’s an adventure & opportunity- don’t waste it! #LeadUpChat
A1: A true leader's life is a 360 lifestyle. Always looking behind and ahead. Keeping track of everyone and everything. Trying to stay ahead of some and keeping up with others! I am exhausted just thinking about it!! Lol!! #leadupchat
LIkewise - because I've come to believe that "balance" isn't actually what we want to achieve. We don't really want a work/life balance. We want fulfillment and goodness in all areas of life - and I'm not sure that means we can achieve balance. #leadupchat
A1: take stock of our energy depleters and what fills your reserves. Be sure you have enough to fill so that you have enough to give and live. Every day, I try to do something just for me. #leadupchat
A1: Jumping in late from Wisconsin. A 360 life is full. All sides of the story are seen and one understands that we all have different needs, desires, feelings. #leadupchat
A1 that we must life a live outside of the classroom AND share that with our students and colleagues. Set aside time in the day for non-academic chats and storytelling #GetOutside#leadupchat
A1: take stock of our energy depleters and what fills your reserves. Be sure you have enough to fill so that you have enough to give and live. Every day, I try to do something just for me. #leadupchat
Love this. The idea that balance has to mean equal time dedicated to separate things is so ridiculous. It can't be a constant. Balance just means you make time for everything; sometimes more sometimes less. Life happens. #leadupchat
LIkewise - because I've come to believe that "balance" isn't actually what we want to achieve. We don't really want a work/life balance. We want fulfillment and goodness in all areas of life - and I'm not sure that means we can achieve balance. #leadupchat
A1: Leila here. 360 leader makes me think of a person who is mindful of her past, able to be aware in the moment, and and always able to look to the future and dream. The circle represents the cyclical aspect of life. #leadupchat
This is so great!! I love how you distinguish between happiness and joyfulness. I agree--being truly present and content is the key to joy--facing challenges with optimism and trust helps us find joy even in the struggle. Thanks for your inspiring words! #leadupchat
A1: To me leading a 360 life means finding joy in what you do, what you have and who you’re with every day. You don’t always have to be happy-but you should be joyful! #LeadUpChat
A2 What a reflective question! I like to keep my momentum keeping myself in the company of amazing educators and resources. I like to converse with people willing to go out of the norm and share with others. #edet543#leadupchat
A2 Not very well sometimes! The most important thing is to stay focused on what you truly believe is important, taking time to reflect and get back on track. #leadupchat
A2: Plan parts of the day that I’m in classrooms, interacting positively with Ss and Ts, making time to write and reflect, and surround myself with a strong PLN to keep me motivated to move past the to-dos! #leadupchat
A1. 360 also brings to mind our need for connection, genuine and authentic connection with others. Living or working in isolation can also create a grand sense of imbalance. #Leadupchat
A2 - Maintaining and putting time into connections outside of work - family, friends, spiritual work. Also remembering that it's not all about me, and that the work we do is challenging. #leadupchat
I have to be careful because work likes to throw big things at me and stress an importance. I am not only an educator. #leadupchat sometimes what is important is quietly waiting for your time.
A1: take stock of our energy depleters and what fills your reserves. Be sure you have enough to fill so that you have enough to give and live. Every day, I try to do something just for me. #leadupchat
A1: Jumping in a little late from CA A 360 life - Being at the center and having the full view. Maybe not a complete picture but a bigger one. #leadupchat
A2. In my new book I talk about my why being disrupted. It’s not enough to simply know your why. You must revisit it often, and also know your what and your how. A why alone has no power if it lacks action...hence #call2action4ed my new book! #Leadupchat
A2: Honestly, if it weren't for this community on Twitter, I could easily get lost in the grind and burn out. Maintaining a larger "360 view" empowers me to keep pushing forward to be my best and encourage others around me. #LeadUpChat
A2) Having a long term goal which consists of small short term, measurable goals! Having a great support system both at work and at home. The power of believing that we are not there “YET” and of course no matter what, just keep swimming!! #leadupchat
A2) Those who successfully make it upstream are the ones who remember that there are always eddies in which we can rest, reflect, and plan our way forward. Remember, eddies are present in even the strongest rivers, but we have to plan to put ourselves in them.
#leadupchat
A2: For me it's the moments.
Quiet times on the water. Fun times with family. Good edu reads. Hard disagreements. Laughter at work. The right Friday sip.
#leadupchat
A2: Might be oversimplifying here: Our purpose is in those seemingly mundane tasks on the to-do list as well. And, by "bringing it" and finding the joy in those tasks too will lead to bigger impacts in all areas. #leadupchat
A2: Help build a collaborative culture within your school where you celebrate and support each other through professional and personal times of growth, while having fun in the process. #LeadUpChat
A2: Intentionally choosing joy and passionate, positive people helps me stay the course and fuels the journey when my energy runs low. We can't afford to let anybody or anything steal our joy or keep us from being our best WE. #KidsDeserveIt#leadupchat
A2:Continual reminders, self-talk and encouragement. Sometimes I have to have 5 minute jam session in my office to put things back into perspective and purpose.#leadupchat
I think personally I had to find some kind of balance because work was taking over, there was a lot going on in my life, that's the beauty of it all, isn't it? It means something different to all of us! #leadupchat
A2: I feel like the best way to achieve this is to always keep my "Why" at my center. It REALLY helps me to connect with others who are positive and who are dreamers to help me keep that why at my core. Otherwise it would be run over by the routine and mundane. #leadupchat
A2 The people close to me in my life help remind me of my purpose. My family keeps me balanced & focused on the important priorities in life. Friends like @MrCoachEli@bmilla84@GuysBride are always there to help me focus, to cheer me on, to celebrate my priorities. #leadupchat
In my opinion, Leaders are more prone to isolation. That’s why I’m advocating for leadership communities. Leaders need community just like kids and teachers. #leadershipwithlatoya#leadupchat
A2: I have to do things that are energizing, like engaging in chats like this with dynamite educators. I also try to be intentional about small conversations with. colleagues during the school day. #LeadUpChat
A2: I think it's important to practice mindfulness. When you're at school, you are fully present. You connect your "daily do's" to the mission and vision of the school. When you're at home, you're also mindful of what you need to do in order to be your best self. #Leadupchat
A2 I keep my focus on my why. Sometimes I write it on a sticky note and put it next to my computer. It helps to be in contact with like-minded people too...real and virtually. #leadupchat
A2. I have a journal where I collect emails, cards, or words that people share with me regarding things I have done that made a difference. When I am feeling lost in the weeds of day to day I read it and refocus. It helps me maintain focus on what really matters #leadupchat
Sometimes we have to do things in the short term that we don’t like for the cause of the big picture. Students need to learn this lesson as well. #leadupchat
I need to second this. I've often been asked what value I see in these chats, and I've often replied that they give me an opportunity to pull myself out of the day-to-day grind, to reflect, and to learn.
#leadupchat
A2: Honestly, if it weren't for this community on Twitter, I could easily get lost in the grind and burn out. Maintaining a larger "360 view" empowers me to keep pushing forward to be my best and encourage others around me. #LeadUpChat
I think we have to be cautious with that message. Wearing ourselves out in the service of others is an important goal but exhaustion is a different thing. Service leads to joy but exhaustion can lead to pain. #leadupchat
A2 Passion equals desire and desire equals power...... Be the change you want to be.... You are going to have to learn to swim with sharks. #leadupchat
A2 I remind myself of the struggles (known and unknown) that my students face in their lives and learning. I owe it to them and to myself to persevere and to find ways to motivate myself #SaturdayMotivation#leadupchat
A2: Picture the end goal, stay on the map or at least have a few routes to get back scouted out. Purposeful planning is key to navigating the small and large that come up during the daily "grind" #leadupchat
A2: I think it's important to practice mindfulness. When you're at school, you are fully present. You connect your "daily do's" to the mission and vision of the school. When you're at home, you're also mindful of what you need to do in order to be your best self. #Leadupchat
A2: when the turbulence of life surrounds you as a leader we must keep our moral compass and direction in focus. To do this we need to define what North, South, East and West is for us so we can stay our course. For me it’s serving other with their well being in mind.#leadupchat
A2 Connect with students. As admin when it's a rough day I go to spend time in a classroom to get recharged. Also, important to surround myself with my PLN and interact with them, right now for example! #leadupchat
A2 Keeping the students in the forefront of my thinking help me to navigate. When it feels like I am swimming upstream, I spend time with students. They remind me that it is ALWAYS worth it. #leadupchat
Yes! I love the "intentionally choosing joy"! I think it's amazing how we can rekindle our fires by being intentional about joy. For me that sometimes mean pretending until it is real. #leadupchat
A2: Intentionally choosing joy and passionate, positive people helps me stay the course and fuels the journey when my energy runs low. We can't afford to let anybody or anything steal our joy or keep us from being our best WE. #KidsDeserveIt#leadupchat
Yes! I always hang onto those little notes. I stick them to my board by my computer. Nice to have a reminder than you are important. #edet543#leadupchat
A2: You have to know what you “thing” is-your passion. Then, devote your energy to it. This isn’t a competition. And really-you don’t have to justify yourself to anyone when you’re living a life of integrity...it shows #LeadUpChat
A2: In our profession, our legacies are written in the futures that our students create and the well being of our colleagues in the present. I try and remind myself of that as much as possible. #leadupchat
A2: My ultimate educator purpose is to always #becomebetter in facilitating meaningful learning experiences for the #wholechild. My wonderful #PLN members, near and far, advise me, guide me, and hold me accountable. #leadupchat
A2 - Remembering that if don't take care of myself then I can't take care of others. Yesterday, I participated in the Work As Worship Retreat - great personal development. Love God, love people, abide in Jesus. #wawr2018#leadupchat
A2 When I need to rekindle my purpose, I get back in the classroom & teach - even just subbing for one class renews my energy & helps me focus on my vision. #leadupchat
I think we have to be cautious with that message. Wearing ourselves out in the service of others is an important goal but exhaustion is a different thing. Service leads to joy but exhaustion can lead to pain. #leadupchat
A2-Maintaining balance- God first, family, friends, students, community, church, personal/physiological needs. Find God in everything, and everything in God. I believe my purpose was chosen for me, and it's important to stay in contact with the one who chose it. #leadupchat
A2: The best fish are found upstream. I try to think the current thru- really know why it flows the way it does. Then, get the canoe, grab a paddle & go. Sometimes against it, sometimes with it, & sometimes stay on the bank! Not all currents are worth fighting! #leadupchat
A2: Small things - 2 minute meditations throughout the day to recenter, quotes or reminders that are visible to draw me back to my values, scheduled time for reflection each week. But it’s often a struggle. #LeadUpChat
Twitter chats are an amazing time to reflect, to learn and to build collaborations. I have almost one daily, some days several, so I can keep growing as a learner and leader. I need those times of reflection and sharing. #leadupchat
Great point. Reminds me of something I've heard many times in my life:
"Do what you need to do when you need to do it so that you can do what you want to do when you want to do it."
#leadupchat
Sometimes we have to do things in the short term that we don’t like for the cause of the big picture. Students need to learn this lesson as well. #leadupchat
A2. That’s why we’re all here. This chat gives us some of the connection we need to be good and feel good about our work. I’m going to keep saying it because I believe it to be significant: People need people. #Leadupchat
A2: I am so inspired by other educators and their passion, innovation, and strategies. My students also kindle my curiosity and love for learning on a daily basis. Remembering not to take myself too seriously also helps. #leadupchat
A2 Populate your life with positive. Not necessarily just those that agree, but those that drive you to be better. Ss, colleague, family (school and home). #leadupchat
A2: I'm a substitue teacher and have had so many experiences that remind me that these last 2 years of schooling for me are leading up to something great! #leadupchat#GEN2108
A2b Also, by making time for things I love and that refresh me: reading, writing, hiking, my dog, straightening my bookshelves at the end of the day, binge-watching Grey's Anatomy... #leadupchat
Yes and I really appreciate you making this point. It's helpful for me to see who on my staff might need relief or a break from work to find balance, while others might need to throw themselves into it because at that moment, it's fulfilling. #leadupchat
A2 being able to reflect on your personal state of mind and knowing when to step back from the extras or when to do a little more. this is a habit I'm working on - how to say no! #leadupchat
I try to find the quiet in the morning, and I have been working to make time for morning prayer (I'm so bad at this!). But I find if I can immerse in peace in the AM it really helps with my day. #leadupchat
A2: Pay attention to others. Reflect often. The important stuff will rise to the top. If you feel like you are losing focus, take some personal time to relax. Be careful who you are allowing to guide your choices. #leadupchat
A2: Finding balance is key. The work is immersive, but those with longevity figure out how to find balance (most of the time). Cutting the cell phone/email anchor after hours went a long way for me. It can wait! Family time is important to the daily recharge. #LeadUpChat
#ArmMeWith politicians who realize funding education & NOT CUTTING funding is the solution to a better future. #ArmMeWith the resources to ensure every child’s social & emotional needs are met & the necessary training & time to met our children’s needs! #leadupchat#moleg#edchat
A2: I have to have a clear focus or Why? When my brain feels foggy, when decisions don’t sit right, when things just feel off... I go back to the WHY. It’s my purpose & focus which allows me to be centered even when going up stream. #leadupchat
Yes! I say this all the time! Is this beneficial to the students, is his good for them, are we keeping their needs in focus, are you focused on the kids in front of you in the here and now? What’s your why in this decision making process? #leadupchat
A2 The upstream rowing is inevitable. We can look to our values as a compass to make sure we’re rowing in a satisfying and meaningful direction, and that dignifies the work when we ache from all that rowing.
#leadupchat
A2: In our profession, our legacies are written in the futures that our students create and the well being of our colleagues in the present. I try and remind myself of that as much as possible. #leadupchat
A2: You have to know what your “thing” is-your passion. Then, devote your energy to it. This isn’t a competition. And really-you don’t have to justify yourself to anyone when you’re living a life of integrity...it shows #LeadUpChat
A2: you have to move from survival mode to significance. You do that by putting people first. Change your thinking from what’s in it for me to how can I don for others. This brings happiness, fulfillment, and significance. #leadupchat
A2: My faith helps keep me grounded and focused on my WHY. When I become shaky it is because I have not leaned into HIM. When I focus on God my WHY is clear. #leadupchat
A2) Communicate your core values to others. Clearly and redundantly. People will respect times when those values anchor your time, energy, and effort. #leadupchat
A2: I have a "clinical" mindset, can see the big picture and break it down piece by piece, can also build it back up and see how everything fits together. (usually) #leadupchat
A2: Again my personal and professional mantra is Do. Reflect. Do Better. I push the same in my classroom with my kids, helping them navigate the “Do World” of education. We have a chasing better chant. #leadupchat
A2 stop & really look & listen to Ss. This observation is a reminder of the most important item on the To Do list. Leaders keep the proper focus & perspective daily #leadupchat
A2 Reflection is SO important. Taking time to remember why we do what we do. How well do our conversations, our calendars, our to do lists match our purpose? #leadupchat
A2: In our profession, our legacies are written in the futures that our students create and the well being of our colleagues in the present. I try and remind myself of that as much as possible. #leadupchat
A2. This can be difficult at times. Balancing responsibilities requires focus, energy, and resilience. Relying on family and friends helps. #leadupchat
Agreed! I think balance isn't reality - but knowing it's okay for work not to be life! That's huge - and it's so difficult when we love our students and our staffs! #leadupchat
A2: I maintain a strong PLN, folks that can lift me up in those moments. Sometimes we pull the “little red wagon” Other times we need to be pulled”. #leadupchat
I tend to have a similar pattern. I just do better when I have morning time to re-set for the day without rushing in. Have been also listening to some sermon podcasts on the way to school instead of the AM news. #LeadUpChat
A2: When things start getting out of whack I remind myself of the long term goal and create a short(er) - cycle plan to create some momentum and success! And as a building leader I remind myself that it’s all about reaching kids and supporting teachers ! #Leadupchat
Dan Pink’s latest book, “When” has some great ideas on this subject - for example the imperative of recess for both students and adults.
#leadupchathttps://t.co/jJcGOx85a1

Such an important point. #servantleadership can also be about stepping back and letting others shine. Building capacity in others so they have the confidence to serve well. #leadupchat
Agree 100%, Jennifer Gonzalez! I know that because of your podcast w/Zaretta Hammond @Ready4rigor. I listened to it two times and I have the book—powerful. Excellent for staff book study. I subscribe to Zaretta’s website/blog. I value her messages & updates. #satchat#leadupchat
A2) Simplify! Don't complicate the simple and understand that our ability to be contributors is an overflow of our capacity. Hard to have clarity if you are in a fog. My guess is most could cut 20% of something out of their life starting now. #LeadUpChat
That's awesome! At one point, I NEEDED work to help with some things happening personally and then my needs changed. I love that you said that!!!!!! #leadupchat
Q3: Living a 360 life isn't about tasks, the cascade of meetings, or products.
How can we ensure that we’re investing most in collegues and students rather than checklists?
#leadupchat
A2 We maintain our purpose by aligning our actions to our priorities. In the to-do routine of the educational world there are many tasks that can distract from keeping the main thing, the main thing. We have to stay focused on affecting positive change for Ss #leadupchat
Great points. As leaders, we have the opportunity to show others that taking a rest or handing something over to others isn't a failure, it's actually great leadership. #leadupchat

A2: It’s also about small meaningful actions. The other day I moved my desk to face the wall of my room so that there is no physical barrier between me and students. Nowhere to hide. #leadupchat
A2: First and for most we are teachers of students who need us to show up daily despite the grind. I try to remind myself of this reality when the grind starts to distract me. #leadupchat
A2 Purposefully balance your life. Although, or maybe, since educators’ vocation and passion is the same thing, we need to make sure we have a hobby or spiritual element that requires us to broaden our focus. #leadupchat
A2. In my most challenging moments, it has been dear friends and colleagues who have lifted me up or carried me through to the other side. Our need for authentic relationships as leaders needs more attention. Perhaps a restructuring of solo leaders to leadership teams?#Leadupchat
Often times leaders, especially those at the top become so disconnected from the students and day to day operations they lose the why. It’s important to keep those guide wires in place to direct the sails ins the right direction to catch the wind! #leadupchat
A2: Navigating the upstream requires me to step back and remember my "why." Connect with others, find opportunities to grow & reflect, and taking care of myself during the challenging times. #leadupchat
A2 A full life demands taking time for you which is not selfish. Loving yourself and filling your own bucket is one of the best things you can do for those around you. #leadupchat losing yourself to the grind breeds resentment... that is not a 360 life.
A2: When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Or... .they take a break, join an awesome Twitter chat, have a beer with a friend, go for a run, it read a book. That's part of a 360 life! #leadupchat
Such a good idea and reminder-- I used to jump in and teach more to get out of the office and it always inspired and energized me. And is buckets of fun. #leadupchat
I start with bible verses before getting out of bed. Then at school I choose joy, celebrating the day sharing smiles with all I pass. Joy can spread!#leadupchat
That's why I went #gradeless- to simplify. My school life has improved immeasurably due to that one decision. Find the thing that makes you feel most stressed and out of control, and figure out how to change it. #leadupchat
A2) Simplify! Don't complicate the simple and understand that our ability to be contributors is an overflow of our capacity. Hard to have clarity if you are in a fog. My guess is most could cut 20% of something out of their life starting now. #LeadUpChat
We all juggle multiple roles in life. It's important to be able to prioritize the importance of each. Sometimes one will out pace another temporarily. That's ok as long as you are aware of it and remember to switch back. #LeadUpChat
A2 Joining in a little late from Cape Town, South Africa. Find what energizes you and carve time in your weekly schedule to make it happen. For me, it's reading. #LeadUpChat
A2. I think there is this mindset that things and people can’t be led if more than one person is at the helm. I disagree with that because I believe the best results come from collective efficacy. See the tension there? The power is in the people not the person...🤓 #Leadupchat

A2 Sometimes knowing that the daily grind and the to-do items come with the journey makes it more doable. Staying focused so those things don’t ‘overtake’ your why is part of being intentional for me. #LeadUpChat
I used to feel like I was protecting others by doing things, but now I try to look at it as stepping back and giving them opportunities to rise and shine. It is a hard job to do alone. #leadupchat

A2b; I also love the idea of swimming upstream. There are times in life that the task at hand is so grurelling that you don't have time to look upstream to keep your eye on the goal. Other times, you can lazily paddle along with your eyes fixed on the destination. #leadupchat
A3: Anything that can easily be accomplished is a checklist item. If what we are doing takes time, isn’t completed in one day, and leads to more questions rather than answers - we are investing. #leadupchat
A2 Keeping the students in the forefront of my thinking help me to navigate. When it feels like I am swimming upstream, I spend time with students. They remind me that it is ALWAYS worth it. #leadupchat
A3:By getting in the classrooms, leading a lesson, co-teaching, eating lunch with students, spending time with staff just talking about topics not related to school. #leadupchat
A3: I find myself using the word intentional a lot; I could truly stay in my office all day long with my checklists but that would NOT fuel my purpose or my passion, so I walk the halls, take kids to our Peace Garden. Get up, connect, move, grow, love. #leadupchat
A3: Be present. Where you spend your time there lies your heart. The best leaders and educators know that everything we do is about the people we are with. Kids won’t care about your learning target until they know you care about them. #leadupchat
A3) Take a look at your checklist and assess how involved other people are in the completion of your tasks. Is one of your daily "to-do's" interacting with the people you're charged with leading? Do you involve people in the decisions you have to make?
#leadupchat
Q3: Living a 360 life isn't about tasks, the cascade of meetings, or products.
How can we ensure that we’re investing most in collegues and students rather than checklists? #leadupchat
A3 We have to be about building relationships. To be present, be there. Be in the halls, cafeteria, outside, in the classrooms. Knowing Ts & Ss as people & learners is much more valuable than numerical data. Let us impact and make a difference in lives. Lead with ❤️ #leadupchat
Q3: Living a 360 life isn't about tasks, the cascade of meetings, or products.

Whew! @heffrey and @VealHeidi are throwing out the really tough questions this morning! My poor Saturday morning brain isn't so sure about this! #leadupchat
A3: Talk to them, ask them the hard questions, listen to them, hear them, and respond to their dreams, needs, concerns, and emotions. Become invested in your people and utilize their strengths and the processes will be much easier to achieve! #leadupchat
Q3: Living a 360 life isn't about tasks, the cascade of meetings, or products.
How can we ensure that we’re investing most in collegues and students rather than checklists? #leadupchat
A3-I think it's important to look at your schedule/plans for the day. I look at my schedule and strive to be at at an 80-20. 80% of my time with kids and colleagues. 20% on planning, phone calls, etc. Some days are harder than others. #leadupchat
The reflection piece is essential, Lorie. In our rapid-paced environment, we must remember to evaluate our habits, make adjustments where necessary, and move forward. #leadupchat
A3: This may seem counterintuitive to some, but making those things a part of checklists works for me -- calendar reminders to connect with colleagues, add to my gratitude list, learn something new, etc. Those can easily be lost in the day. #LeadUpChat
Yep! I reflected on the thought of leaders as shepherds in a recent blog post. It was inspired by these words: "A leader's job is to shepherd, not necessarily to always shine." I think it is applicable to this conversation: https://t.co/usqW7ChUXw#leadupchat
In reply to

Recently, I have learned to listen without volunteering. I don't always need to take things on in order to be supportive of someone else's efforts. #LeadUpChat
A3. It has to be intentional. It has to be on your calendar. AND it has to be sacred. If you block time on your calendar to walk your building or check on a colleague then honor that time. The humans in our buildings deserve our intentional focus. #leadupchat
A3) There is beauty in work when done w/ skill, passion, integrity, and love. Encourage & love people to empower them to do the sacred work. #wawr2018#leadupchat
A3 Invest your time in what is important. Make sure you designate a time to explore new things yourself that you can use to change the thought process of education. Knock out your checklists early and focus on something new. #edet543#leadupchat
A3: We have to take the time to nurture relationships with colleagues and children-that extra chat in the hall, noticing when someone is upset, acting on an impulse to pump someone else up...when you feel a positive emotion, act on it and let your heart lead! #leadupchat
Surround yourself with people who are running the same race as you. Hire and grow people with the same shared purpose. Are you doing this? Our job as leaders is to ensure we protect our purpose & values for self & others. Momentum builders, not killers. #LeadUpChat
A3. For me it is all about building relationships no matter what. As an SRO sometimes that is difficult, but it’s about being creative and finding different avenues to make Ts and Ss know that I care about each of them. #LeadUpChat
Q3: Living a 360 life isn't about tasks, the cascade of meetings, or products.
How can we ensure that we’re investing most in collegues and students rather than checklists? #leadupchat
A3: For Ss, I think about building relationships, making connections and then getting to the academics. 1:1 conferencing, meeting them where they are, etc. They are individuals. #leadupchat
A3 Conversations and relationships. Often, and genuine. I have to remind myself of this. I fall into the "get things done" mode too often. #Aware#leadupchat
I have utilized 12 week year-setting goals and then setting short term benchmarks to get there-has helped me with those big rocks in work and life. #leadupchat
A3 This is very difficult to do sometimes when expectations are coming our way. I try to schedule the time to get out of the office and enjoy the people around me as often as possible. #settingpriorities#leadupchat
Yes - because if you do not intentionally build in time for that it can easily get swept out of the way and then you'll find yourself saying, "I'll get to it tomorrow" every single day. #leadupchat
A3 cultivating and maintaining strong meaningful deep relationships with colleagues and students will provide the pull/push needed to move out of the undertow and back to the center and your “why” #leadupchat
Q2: @Leadupnow#leadupchat Hard work! Have to make sure I remember to lean on those who will lift me up & keep me accountable. Easy to lose sight in the fast pace of ed. This little light of mine-I’m gonna let it shine 🎤!
A3: This is hard because tasks must get done, but PASSION lies in people! That balance that has to exist gets way off in my world as tasks have to be done during bs hours too. I’ll be honest- this is a “fail” for me right now as I do both HS pr & Supt in my dist. #leadupchat
Whew! @heffrey and @VealHeidi are throwing out the really tough questions this morning! My poor Saturday morning brain isn't so sure about this! #leadupchat
A3: You listen, learn alongside, and reflect. You continue conversations about Ts and Ss learning, not about your own. You maximize the time you spend in classrooms. #leadupchat
A3 - checking in often with our own mental health. Tasks will often drain us, investing in colleagues and students will bring us joy. People over things. #leadupchat
I am also learning this! more often than not, people just need a listening ear and a smile. They don't really want to hear my brilliant solution to their problem! lol #leadupchat
A3:Focus on the student/staff/parent that needs me. Prioritize the relationship that is in front of me over the checklist item that I can take care of later #leadupchat
A3: Take time to build relationships with students and colleagues. Spend time getting to know them in the halls and during recess. Sit down next to them and find out what they’re doing. Get to know their lives beyond the walls of the school building. #leadupchat
A3. This is about moving from compliance to empowerment. We can move beyond compliance by allowing a sense of ownership & autonomy over the work by those who will be doing it. When something is demanded of you without your input, it’s easy to detach from it. #Leadupchat
A3 It's all about relationships and connecting with students and colleagues. Know details about their life in order to have a conversation with them about something that isn't school related but life-related. #leadupchat
A3. Put your phone away. When I have scheduled meetings with people-my phone is put away and silenced. If people make the time to meet with me-I want to make sure I am 100% present. #Leadupchat
A3: 100% of what we do is centered on relationships! We need to create safe environments for ideas to be shared and voices to be heard and cultivate connections with high-levels of trust. Interactions & true dialogue matter! Checklists can take the interaction out! #leadupchat
Q3: Living a 360 life isn't about tasks, the cascade of meetings, or products.
How can we ensure that we’re investing most in collegues and students rather than checklists? #leadupchat
A3: Look at agenda items and ask...Am I wanting approval or am I enlisting thought partners? Too many times, the work’s already done before the meeting. If you aren’t learning something new together or making a decision as a team....scrap it! #leadupchat
I used to attempt to find a ‘balance’ but for me it is more like ‘harmony’ where one aspect may lead for a time and then another slips in and has a bigger role. #LeadUpChat
A3. There are many tasks that can be done on your computer while in a classroom. I check email, compose my weekly memo, and read articles in the comfort of our classrooms. #leadupchat
A3: When we have team meetings we begin with celebrations. These are often professional, but we hear a lot from each other that is personal. Helps us connect and have a better appreciation and understanding of each other. #leadupchat
A3: Relationships and connections are key. Listen to student and other teacher's stories. Ask questions and know about their lives outside of school. #leadupchat
I work at a Drop Out Prevention and Recovery High School and my SRO is my right arm and the students go to him often when they are struggling. We work very well together and I lean on him. Positive Relationships with law enforcement makes an impact! #leadupchat
Exactly -- I have also moved to having both tech calendar reminders as well as paper ones to help me with this. I am definitely still a work in progress! #LeadUpChat
A3 It depends who and what the items on the checklist serve. What’s most important? Who is better off for my having done this? How is the time I’m investing now leading to better learning? Better relationships? Increased creativity, empathy, and equity? #leadupchat
A3: it may sound odd but I actually schedule time in my day to be visible, and I have a large spreadsheet where I keep up with how I’m interacting with staff members. We have abt 130 teachers so it’s easy to miss someone if I’m not intentional. #LeadUpChat
✨This is the secret sauce!! 💫 I LOVE this tweet, Jessica. LOOK for good and SHARE the good that you see, how it made you feel, how it impacted you/others. #edugladiators#leadupchat#moedchat#ksedchat
Whenever you have a positive thought about someone don’t let the thought pass without saying it out loud - to that person or to someone else - every time. Then watch the incredible way that your students, staff, school, and world evolve.💫 #JoyfulLeaders#LoveWorks#KidsDeserveIt
A3: Get out of the office and talk with kids, teachers, staff, families. Build relationships. Time consuming - yes, but so worth the investment. #leadupchat
Colleagues- drink with them, party with them, experience off-site collaboration of some sort be human!
Students- show them that you're human, model positive interaction between your peers at work! Don't be nasty...... #leadupchat
A3: Pay attention to people. Take the time to interact as humans. It may look like you aren't "working" but the benefits are far greater. You need to develop/maintain relationships to build positive culture. The paperwork can be done later! #LeadUpChat
Q3: Living a 360 life isn't about tasks, the cascade of meetings, or products.
How can we ensure that we’re investing most in collegues and students rather than checklists? #leadupchat
A3 This is one I struggle with. Some days it feels like I have to choose between the to do list and the Ss. Working on being more organized so that the paperwork takes less time. #leadupchat
A3 Daily connections that empower & build Ss & Ts up. Maintaining a growth mindset and interacting in a manner that encourages others to do the same #leadupchat

A3:We have to remember that they are human, and education is above all a human endeavor. It is our common connection. I believe in beginning all work with Smiles and Frowns. This places the people in front of the work. How I begin every period, and every dept meeting #leadupchat
A3. Keeping my focus on people is most important for me. I can get so consumed by tasks & to-dos. People are my priority and I can’t ever forget that. #Leadupchat
I write a series at my blog (https://t.co/CXyzC0rz0W) about the gradeless classroom. Check it out if you want, and join us tomorrow night at 9 PM EST for #tg2chat where we talk about gradeless learning! #leadupchat
A3: Self-awareness.
You know that feeling where it's like you are at the center hub of a large spinning wheel and you're churning out work?
Know how to step out of the hub and into the moment with a human.
#leadupchat
A leader who shared the burden of his/her to-do list with others equips others for future leadership and creates time to spend his/her energy investing in people. A leader who does everything himself/herself is a leader who's likely not connecting with people.
#leadupchat
Reflection is so important. We must make space in our busy lives to pause and reflect. Are we sufficiently humble? Are we learning from our experiences? Are we having the impact we are seeking? How do we know? #leadupchat
Such an incredibly good point. We need more of this kind of thinking as we approach our time with people. Their time is too precious and they don't need us to put on a show. #leadupchat
Colleagues- drink with them, party with them, experience off-site collaboration of some sort be human!
Students- show them that you're human, model positive interaction between your peers at work! Don't be nasty...... #leadupchat
A3.2: Do your actions match your message? Want to go fast- go alone. Want to go far- go together. Our ability to build capacity and efficacy lies within our ability to connect with people and lead with people at the center. #leadupchat
It’s easy to fall into that zone. I have learned over the years if I stay in my office I see all negatives that are brought to me, if I get out into the school and classrooms I get to see the amazing happen! #leadupchat
Q3: Living a 360 life isn't about tasks, the cascade of meetings, or products.

A3. Keeping my focus on people is most important for me. I can get so consumed by tasks & to-dos. People are my priority and I can’t ever forget that. #Leadupchat
YES! The Ss we have right now at this moment. With looping, I have also come to realize the student standing in front of me is NOT the same student I had last year. #leadupchat
A3. Put your phone away. When I have scheduled meetings with people-my phone is put away and silenced. If people make the time to meet with me-I want to make sure I am 100% present. #Leadupchat
A3. We must never deny the human element of our work. No matter how scientific our approach or methodologies become, the critical variable is that we work with human beings. We must invest in their hearts and their minds. We don’t have to choose one over the other. #leadupchat
agreed! I am more intentional about the questions I ask-if I already know the answer it isn't worth wasting other's time discussing it-lets work on things that impact everyone. #Leadupchat
Q3: Living a 360 life isn't about tasks, the cascade of meetings, or products.

A3) Establishing a "rule of life" for self. Having order in our day where our purpose drives the outflow. Many people unintentionally are not intentional about their day. If you can't drive 60 mph all day long without stopping to put gas in it daily! #LeadUpChat
A3: It’s about genuinely creating, nourishing and maintaining relationships. Take heart... it takes time to create authentic relationships. #leadupchat
A3 - take the time to get to know them. Be present in the halls, in the staff room, get to know the people big and small that we spend our days with. #leadupchat
Q3: Living a 360 life isn't about tasks, the cascade of meetings, or products.
How can we ensure that we’re investing most in collegues and students rather than checklists? #leadupchat
A3We solidify & maintain our investment in colleagues & Ss, by being purposeful in our communication with, support of, & continuous collaboration with them. Our colleagues should know we are on the same team & our Ss should recognize our desire to support their growth #leadupchat
Q3: Living a 360 life isn't about tasks, the cascade of meetings, or products.
How can we ensure that we’re investing most in collegues and students rather than checklists? #leadupchat
A3 I consistently look for ways to authentically thank those around me for all that they do to support Ts & Ss. It makes such a difference to them (and me) and keeps me searching for positive actions and interactions. #leadupchat
A leader who shared the burden of his/her to-do list with others equips others for future leadership and creates time to spend his/her energy investing in people. A leader who does everything himself/herself is a leader who's likely not connecting with people.
#leadupchat
A3. Be grateful. Put people first. Define success as sowing, not reaping. Keep growing to keep giving. Giving of ourselves leads to the most rewarding harvest: leaders who attribute their growth and success to our dedication to development. #LeadUpChat
Awesome! We started one with a "Norm Check-In". Instead of reading the norms and moving on, we did a quick write where staff wrote about which norm they feel they may struggle with during the session, then they shared w/partner. #leadupchat
Teachers who take the time to greet students at the door save the time other teachers spend dealing with increased management issues. Show the kids you care.

Q3: Living a 360 life isn't about tasks, the cascade of meetings, or products.
How can we ensure that we’re investing most in collegues and students rather than checklists? #leadupchat
Curiosity is generosity! How often do we take the time to really notice the creative, thoughtful ways our colleagues approach their work and their students? #leadupchat
I love this. In a large organization, it's so smart to keep track of "face-time" and assume we've given people attention when in their minds, we haven't. #leadupchat
Q1: #leadupchat@Leadupnow Living a 360 life means you are ever evolving into what HE designed you to be. As an educator I know that I must never stay stagnant and that I must be a catalyst for keeping those on my campus rocking the 360 with me.
A2 Bring your passions into your work. You didn’t get to this point by following every job description and compliance expectation. You got here by being passionate, dynamic, unique and valuable. #leadupchat@Leadupnow
I block time on my calendar to make sure I do just that. Meetings can really drain the time during the school day. If time is ‘blocked’ no meetings can be scheduled. #LeadUpChat
A3. I find myself constantly trying to raise my level of consciousness to be more connected, mindful, and intentional about my actions. I want to live and lead on purpose. I don’t want my life to be a by product of coincidence. #leadupchat
A4 Remember, change is good. Make the things you do reflect on your values. But be sure you are being relevant with the times. Be yourself in all things. Be the change. Kindness is supreme. #edet543#leadupchat
True. And in a larger district meetings appear on calendar not made by you. Start with 80/20 and realize you may have to move things. Be OK with that but make 90/10 work later to make up for it. #leadupchat
A4: Compassion, patience, support, empathy, and growth. Learning how to orchestrate conflict and hold courageous conversations are in there for good measure. #leadupchat
A4: Is this best for my students first followed by does this have a positive impact on my life or negative? The second guides how I tweak things or adjust. I have found I have never had to abandon something that is great for students but I have had to balance it. #leadupchat
Q1: #leadupchat@Leadupnow Living a 360 life means you are ever evolving into what HE designed you to be. As an educator I know that I must never stay stagnant and that I must be a catalyst for keeping those on my campus rocking the 360 with me.
A4: It starts with emotion; sadness and rage about the way we treat each other in society. Then moves toward resolve; the desire to forge a better future through education. #leadupchat
A4 Staying true to your values is SO important. I always strive to live & lead with heart, kindness, compassion, emapthy, understanding, generosity, happiness. I try to make others’ lives better because we are meant to be servant leaders, to live as a family. #leadupchat
A4: Lead through strength and empower others in their areas of strength; listen and listen again; don’t let fear infiltrate your organization; we can always get better; there is always a solution. #LeadUpChat
A4 first and foremost I try to always remind myself of my behavior and decision-making as a student. Compassion, mutual respect, and encouragement will almost always go further and feel better than sterner, stricter stuff. #leadupchat
A3: I try to think in terms of what will be the most impactful use of my time while school is in session. Non urgent matters can wait until kids go home ; what support can I offer teachers and students while they are on campus . #leadupchat
Good thing for all of us to remember. Try to do only those things that can only be done when students are in the building during the school day. I need to improve at this.
#leadupchat
A3: just try to remember why you got there in the first place- for the people and passion for helping others and making a difference, not a checklist. #LeadUpChat
One principal who greeted students at his door told me, "I handle 90% of my school's discipline problems by greeting my kids here every day." #leadupchat
A4 Situations may change, people may change, dynamics may change, but our personal and professional values should remain the same. Commitment to build others, supporting our Ts & Ss, & remaining steadfast through adversity are value staples #leadupchat
My guiding principals in life are simple. God will take care and provide. His will has gotten me to this point and his plan is what I should focus on. With everything i do in a school, Kids have to come first and I trust that God is taking care of the rest. #leadupchat
RTQ4: 360 Living requires abiding by enduring values that stand the test of time.
What are the values that serve as your compass to navigate through the upstream currents of change and challenge? #leadupchat
A4: Joy- I LOVE what I do & who I am #JoyfulLeaders. Still a work in progress but I love it! Impossibility- bring me the impossible, we will defeat it together! Faith- God guides me, with His grace I can be much more for this purposeful life He built me for. #leadupchat
My early hours and late hours - before everyone wakes and after everyone leaves are most productive for those tasks. More time during the day to be with the living! #leadupchat
A3: By prioritizing PEOPLE & nurturing #Relationships. We need to put aside "the work" for THE REAL WORK. As leaders, we need to lead, inspire, empower, & give people all the tools & conditions to do their work. Remember, we cannot lead if no one is willing to follow.
#LeadUpChat
A4: I want to help guide people toward finding the sweet spot where their passions, their abilities and the needs of our world converge. That’s the path to a better future in my opinion. #leadupchat
Ohhhhhh!!!! I would drink a beer with you right now... I have this stapled my office door.... Move, be agile, be with-it, captivate their inspiration by meaningful, memorable, and motivational interaction...#leadupchat
A4: Is this best for my students? Will this stifle or ignite curiosity and learning? Is this kind? These are questions and values I never want to lose. #leadupchat
completely agree. People who are new to the building are amazed at how little I am in the office, and how much I am out in and outside of the building. #leadupchat
A3: my schedule has built in "email time" and I build in paperwork - then spend 80% or more with staff and students - also TAKE YOUR WORK EMAIL OFF YOUR PHONE! #LeadUpChat
A4: Keeping the "main" thing, the "main" thing --- decisions, strategies, resources, schedules, etc. focused on student needs...and being the BEST for Ss every day....to guide our decision-making #leadupchat Love this by @SteeleThoughts
Q3: Be present and intentional. Mindfully plant, water and grow relationships. Show you sincerely care! Doing so secures the joy factor when balancing your 360 Life.
But sometimes, there's a deadline-- and let's be real, in those cases, you gotta handle the checklist. In those moments, that's how you are serving your school. #leadupchat
A4 Compassion, empathy, silence to let other voices be heard, change can be good, the capacity to roll with the punches... but the greatest of these is love. #leadupchat
A4: I am NOT the most important person. My thinking may be good, but I should NEVER believe that my idea can't be improved. I AM here to serve a valuable purpose for my family, friends, students and staff. Hopefully with significant positive impact. #leadupchat
A2: I have objectives and a system. I intentionally organize each and every day with the help of my calendar 📆: block of time for reflection/reading/blogging, for checking emails, and for family time. #leadupchat
A4: When it come to only “enduring” I’m reminded of this quote! For me enjoying life means: gratitude, reflection, laughter, a good home cooked meal, snuggling with my littles, connecting with friends, dancing in the living room, being kind to others & myself. #leadupchat
A3. Well, I do rely on Check lists and my calendar to stay focused and organized. However, I work to make sure I spend time with students and staff during the school day. #leadupchat
Q3: Living a 360 life isn't about tasks, the cascade of meetings, or products.
How can we ensure that we’re investing most in collegues and students rather than checklists? #leadupchat
A1 Leading a 360 life. Look all around you all the time. Reflect on what's behind you and make moving forward as great as possible. Take it all in, all the time. #edet543#leadupchat
A4: Change is good, but change is hard. If adding to plates, have hard conversations and commit to take something else off plates. Build in more time that you think for that change. #LeadUpChat
RTQ4: 360 Living requires abiding by enduring values that stand the test of time.
What are the values that serve as your compass to navigate through the upstream currents of change and challenge? #leadupchat
A4 Every action, discussion, and decision must start with a question. Is this best for kids? I also often times ask myself, “is the juice worth the squeeze”? This keeps me from making knee jerk reactions. #leadupchat
A4: I keep Love at the forefront of everything I do. I remember that where there is hope there is possibility. I tell people I love them, I remind them there is always hope, and remind myself and others that we all are “enough” #leadupchat
Agree. That's why I think we have to try. Oftentimes, there's not a really tight deadline, and we still choose to focus on the task rather than the people. At least, I'm guilty of this sometimes.
#leadupchat
A4: Be dedicated, positive and real. Be present and motivate around what you believe in. Maybe the most important, check my ego at the door every day!! Always child centered!! #LeadUpChat
A4 Service before self, I won't make millions, but I will reach millions- I will do this with honor, integrity, and a level of crunkness that cranks everyone around me up to eleven and we melt faces. #leadupchat
A4: Core values matter and reflecting on these values matters more! Trust, empathy, and autonomy to share a few. My core values mentioned here:
https://t.co/kKdknX13m3#Leadupchat
A4 #kindnesmatters every day. This drives me. I am aware it doesn't drive everyone. But at the end of the day I can be proud of my actions and what I tried to accomplish. THAT is the example I want to be for my kiddos. #leadupchat
A4: Keeping the students as the focus and their needs and well being at the forefront. Doing what’s right for students as well as for my staff and the community as a whole. #leadupchat
That is great advice! I do not have email on my phone because I would be too obsessed to keep checking. Our admin team has used texts to stay in touch if situations arise. #LeadUpChat
completely agree. People who are new to the building are amazed at how little I am in the office, and how much I am out in and outside of the building. #leadupchat
A4: My message regarding our mission is the same every day. I am guided by my moral compass. As this is year 1 for me, I try to spend more time listening to understand, rather than w/ the intention to reply. I enjoy bringing others into the conversation to help lead. #leadupchat
A4: Lead with integrity, honesty, and authenticity. Be real. I make mistakes...I apologize. Recognize that others are dealing with many challenges and find ways to support and help and not judge. Above all - be grateful for my many blessings! #leadupchat
Couldn’t agree more. I was once told in an interview that they were looking for someone who loved kids and loved their subject. If you have that, everything else will fall into place. #LeadUpChat
Q3: Living a 360 life isn't about tasks, the cascade of meetings, or products.
How can we ensure that we’re investing most in collegues and students rather than checklists? #leadupchat
Improving at this, but I like the idea I just saw about doing this with my students at the end of the week -- helping them build this pattern but building my own as well. #LeadUpChat
Absolutely, find those that have no problems giving 200% and immerse yourself. It takes time, effort, and tenacity to search for them, but once you have it, you have it. #leadupchat
Q5: 360 Living is influential.
How are you influencing others to stay the course against the currents of distractions and obstacles that would swamp the team's best efforts? #leadupchat
A4 Giving my Ss a foundation that will support long term positive outcomes is my why. Being a lifelong learner is my how. Supporting and collaborating with other educators is key to success. #leadupchat
Morning all, Jen, Supt from OR where we had snow this week, a rarity in the #PNW. A4- values include family, love, continuous learning and growing, equity & as my Twitter usually states #learn#grow#live#work#lead. #leadupchat.
A4: Remembering my mission to improve the life of children and families through education; closing acheivement gaps. As a child of an illiterate father and a child of poverty I consider my life in education along with being a mother my most high calling from on high! #Leadupchat
Couldn’t agree more. I was once told in an interview that they were looking for someone who loved kids and loved their subject. If you have that, everything else will fall into place. #LeadUpChat
A4 Students first. Teachers and admin also need to make sure they take time to #sharpenthesaw and do what they need to in order to recharge their batteries! #leadupchat
A3: Log how we spend our time. How we spend our time reflects our priorities. Reflect on whether we are communicating the right message. Our words & actions should demonstrate that we are about building capacity in others to transform teaching & learning. #leadupchat
As always, I am inspired to be more for my campus as a result of the talented Ed’s here on #leadupchat thank you! Time for baseball ⚾️ practice! @VealHeidi@heffrey

Q5: 360 Living is influential.
How are you influencing others to stay the course against the currents of distractions and obstacles that would swamp the team's best efforts? #leadupchat
A4: Knowing people, helping them to WANT to continue to learn and grow, finding ways to build upon their strengths and overcome their struggles #leadupchat
Q5: 360 Living is influential.
How are you influencing others to stay the course against the currents of distractions and obstacles that would swamp the team's best efforts? #leadupchat
A4: Serving others. My challenge is staying focused on my WHY because then I can serve without cynicism. When I become lost and unfocused my service is becomes selfish and full of resentment. #leadupchat
A5: I'm an eternal optimist and remain positive. I think challenges are inevitable, but if you are patient, kind, supportive, and celebratory, and you praise effort over outcome, the intended outcome will follow. #leadupchat
A5) I try not to get bent out of shape about things I can't control and/or things that don't really matter. I hope I model this for my team and I hope it helps keep them focused on the main thing.
#leadupchat
Q5: 360 Living is influential.
How are you influencing others to stay the course against the currents of distractions and obstacles that would swamp the team's best efforts? #leadupchat
A5 Lead by example. Love your neighbors and show them support in what they do. Help out. Share your thoughts and ideas. Be the glue your team needs. #edet543#leadupchat
Q5: 360 Living is influential.
How are you influencing others to stay the course against the currents of distractions and obstacles that would swamp the team's best efforts? #leadupchat
A5 Can't just live 360; must also lead 360. When troubles arrise to you vent, troubleshoot, and repair, or do you complain and became the problem? #leadupchat
A5: Struggling with this a bit right now. Soooooo many distractions in play at soooooooo many levels. Stay engaged, share the "why" whenever possible. Listen and make sure to keep encouraging dialogue and productive feedback. #LeadUpChat
Q5: 360 Living is influential.
How are you influencing others to stay the course against the currents of distractions and obstacles that would swamp the team's best efforts? #leadupchat
A5: I work really hard to keep the main thing the main thing, and encourage my team to focus on what we can control and let go of what we can't. I'll take from them whatever I can to help get that done. #leadupchat
Q5: 360 Living is influential.
How are you influencing others to stay the course against the currents of distractions and obstacles that would swamp the team's best efforts? #leadupchat
A4: In my office I have this quote! As an admin. you never know what can or will be thrown your way. What you can control is your attitude, how you strive to make others feel and your actions. Come what may... love it! #leadupchat
A5-I believe in living by example. I want my actions to speak louder than my words. We can't "MAKE" people do things, I believe we can only influence them by our efforts. #leadupchat
A5 That’s what I write about—how students and teachers can explore and enact their values at school, so that their work and relationships at school can become a source of meaning and vitality. https://t.co/gJkpGucobu#leadupchat
A4.1 Be real, and I mean real.... Edutainment should be rolling off the tips of everyone's tongue in these chats. It is just as much entertainment as education. It's a partnership. Motivate... We have good days, we have bad- there's always tomorrow #leadupchat
Definitely has to be right fit to make the move. You will know if/when it’s right. I still have lots of Ss connections so I love my AP role. I’m in a unique looping experience where I have worked with some HS Ss since K as an admin so relationships are strong! #LeadUpChat
In reply to
@teresagross625, @jedikermit, @MsVandeborne, @JasonKohls
A3. Be grateful. Put people first. Define success as sowing, not reaping. Keep growing to keep giving. Giving of ourselves leads to the most rewarding harvest: leaders who attribute their growth and success to our dedication to development. #LeadUpChat
Thank you @heffrey and @VealHeidi for a great chat today. I have to duck out early to take my son to practice. Loved learning with everyone this morning #leadupchat
A5) ALWAYS stay positive. High fives and smiles are contagious! No matter the mistakes made, it is not the end of the world. Work through life TOGETHER. Everyday is a new day to make a new relationship or build on a current one! #LeadUpChat
Q5: 360 Living is influential.
How are you influencing others to stay the course against the currents of distractions and obstacles that would swamp the team's best efforts? #leadupchat
A5 Just trying to admit mistakes and failures, be honest about what I'm doing, do less "shut the door and teach", be more transparent. Still failing a lot, but I am trying to do better. #leadupchat
A5: Communicating and collaborating with like-minded people who are moving in the same direction (while simultaneously jogging to the back to encourage others to keep others moving in the same direction). #leadupchat
Maybe we need to follow every agenda item with (Why?) Seriously. Type it and make copies. Without it, our work runs the risk of doing/being nothing. #LeadUpChat
A5, By just moving forward each day. Sometimes you fail but fail forward.

Q5: 360 Living is influential.
How are you influencing others to stay the course against the currents of distractions and obstacles that would swamp the team's best efforts? #leadupchat
A5 Because there are more & more distractions in our world, I've been actively teaching Ss (and some Ts) strategies for overcoming procrastination. #leadupchat
A5: being a constant support, helping the to take a moment to refocus on the big picture or goal. nudging them to stay on the positive thought train. Most of all, setting the example of positivity, staying goal oriented and wholly invested in the process #leadupchat

A5: Have a vision & focus the vision. The everyday struggles can overwhelm us; venting is good, allow it & embrace that not everything has to solved. Encourage, Empower & Embrace all people to be good & do good. LIFT people daily! #LeadupChat
#leadupchat
A5: There is a HUGE element of modeling here, as well. When something doesn't go as planned or my way - I can't react by throwing a fit, letting everyone see me upset, aggravated, etc. It's not good for anyone and it certainly doesn't keep the raft moving. #leadupchat
A3: Be present in the moments that you are connecting with others. Ask questions, learning something new about them, share something about yourself. #leadupchat
A5. You walked right into this one, but it’s all in my new book. I’m Fighting Back and encouraging other educators to be advocates for our profession! #leadupchat
A5 I know my attitude affects everyone, so staying positive is key. Bringing the team back to our "why" and how we can meet expectations and stay true to that. #leadupchat
A5: By being in it together! Building a culture of community that has trust and respect, that allows us to open doors and see what others are doing to further our vision. #leadupchat
A5 As a leader, I have to remain relentlessly focused on our goals because one small deviation by me could change the course of the entire team’s efforts. #leadupchat
A5: When we engage in the work alongside others, it shows them that the course is worth following. My dad taught me “Never ask anyone to do that which you aren’t willing to do yourself” #leadupchat
A5: We have to live what we preach! Grateful that in our school our mission and vision statements are not framed posters on the wall! We strive to live our mission & vision every day! #leadupchat
One way is to be a model. Do it yourself and others will follow. Another way is to intentionally bring the group back to core values and away from that “checklist” aka “the agenda.” #leadupchat
A5: Show them that you understand the challenges and that you recognize the struggle. And then model positive ways to handle it. Be there for them. Find the positive and celebrate small achievements. Laugh a lot! #leadupchat
A5: No matter how busy I am, I always have time to talk to a staff member who needs support to in staying strong. Supporting them supports me. It's rejuvenating. #leadupchat
What a great idea! Would love to see what you've done with this. As a horrible procrastinator myself, I think I'd have benefited from some teaching about how to overcome it. #leadupchat
A3: Self-awareness.
You know that feeling where it's like you are at the center hub of a large spinning wheel and you're churning out work?
Know how to step out of the hub and into the moment with a human.
#leadupchat
A5 - trying my best to lead by example. Allowing my Ss to see me own mistakes and apologize for them. Creating lessons that inspire my Ss, supporting my colleagues to do them same. #leadupchat
A5: keep your energy high! Celebrate and find the positive - and as much as possible take on the distractions for the staff and if you can't empower them to overcome them! #leadupchat
A5 Trying to stay invested in the horizon while also appreciating and carrying on the work we have done at @hightechhigh I’m always wondering #HMW tend to our culture like a gardener instead of injecting and deconstructing like a surgeon. #leadupchat@Leadupnow
Q5: 360 Living is influential.
How are you influencing others to stay the course against the currents of distractions and obstacles that would swamp the team's best efforts? #leadupchat
A5: Let’s face it, the work of education is hard. As a leader I must be willing to listen to the good , the bad and the ugly . I also have to ask a lot of questions . And give teachers the permission to FOCUS on kids by offering teachers the support they need. #leadupchat
A5: Practice what we preach. If we are living a 360 life, then ALL aspects of our life need attention. Take time for yourself and relationships. Stay the course, persevere through the currents & always cycle back to the positive. #leadupchat
A5We stay the course by constantly referring to the collaborative vision that we have set. Planned events, immediate disruptions, & new ideas should be evaluated by that vision. If they do not link to our purpose we limit our time with those so that we keep our focus #leadupchat
Q5: 360 Living is influential.
How are you influencing others to stay the course against the currents of distractions and obstacles that would swamp the team's best efforts? #leadupchat
A4: Connecting them to key leaders, teachers, mentors, etc.....to have another support to lean on. It takes a dedicated community of leaders to support each other & stay the course #leadupchat
Q5: 360 Living is influential.
How are you influencing others to stay the course against the currents of distractions and obstacles that would swamp the team's best efforts? #leadupchat

Q5: 360 Living is influential.
How are you influencing others to stay the course against the currents of distractions and obstacles that would swamp the team's best efforts? #leadupchat
A5 The most important thing-to be there for them. To support, listen, to cheer. I always try to celebrate others & who they are. It’s important that people know they MATTER. I always encourage risk-taking. I believe in them & do what I can to help make things happen. #leadupchat
Q5: 360 Living is influential.
How are you influencing others to stay the course against the currents of distractions and obstacles that would swamp the team's best efforts? #leadupchat
A5 leading by example first. Also when you sense someone else is sinking or caught in the muck reach out to them, support them, and lead them back to the “why” #leadupchat
A5: I put the students’ needs first in conversations and try to promote growth. I teach the kiddos how to have a growth mindset. I keep my door open for staff when they need to talk but strive to look at positives and how we can grow. #leadupchat
#leadupchat
A5. I try to remember that we all have the best interest in mind for our students. Sometimes we take different paths to get the same end results. That’s ok. #leadupchat
Leaders understand that people are their bottom line. Lead through others. Many leaders self sabotage when they either micro-manage or believe less than best about their people. #LeadUpChat#leadership
A5: Stay true to the vision, mission, & goals established. If you are always referring & people helped to develop & believe in, schools/orgs will stay focused and moving forward. Being a broken record in this context is not a bad thing 😉. #leadupchat
A3: Self-awareness.

"Withitness" you better come with it- saw Attitude (needed), Resilience- be able to bounce back, how hard can you get hit and keep moving forward, you won't discover oceans unless you push away from the shore (be brave), be an upstander. #leadupchat
A6. Team decisions-before anything comes into our school system we discuss if it will amplify our current practices or distraction us from the work we are attempting to complete. Saying no can be hard-but necessary. #Leadupchat
Q5: 360 Living is influential.
How are you influencing others to stay the course against the currents of distractions and obstacles that would swamp the team's best efforts? #leadupchat
A5. I’m putting my passion in my purpose, in my preparation, in my productivity, and on a page. Writing for my life and working with all my heart. That works for me. #leadupchat
A5) Ignore the naysayers. There's a distinct difference between people who give constructive criticism to move the whole team forward and other people who are actively rowing in the opposite direction.
#leadupchat
Q5: 360 Living is influential.
How are you influencing others to stay the course against the currents of distractions and obstacles that would swamp the team's best efforts? #leadupchat
A5: I believe that maintaining those strong, comfortable, personal connections can build confidence in others. When the work is done by the group, supporting each other's efforts, the currents don't have as much power to disrupt the flow. #LeadUpChat
Q5: 360 Living is influential.

A4: Compassion, and the drive & motivation to always want to be the best version of myself. Make it about people, about adding value to others. #leadupchat
A4: At my core is adding value to people. Inspire. Empower. Transform. Believe.
Integrity, empathy, compassion, passion, drive, determination, and most of all service to others. #leadupchat
A5) Starts with monitoring myself. Being more intentional with raising the heat. Laying low is hard for me but your edge fades without exercising intentionality. Trying to get better at that. #leadupchat
Q5: 360 Living is influential.

@VealHeidi and @heffrey are bringing it! Great conversation this morning, but I have to go make breakfast for my family! I think banana bread sounds good! #leadupchat
A5 Relationships that are genuine creates trust where authentic collaboration and support can thrive. Being there and present in every interaction sends a strong message to all. #LeadUpChat
A5b) part of not swamping the boat and influence is found in the power of anticipation. Anticipatory leadership requires being a proactive influencer rather than a reactionary leader. As the one steering the boat our job is to have the experience and strength of will. #LeadUpChat
Today (Saturday) the entire staff at my new school (30 ppl or so) are at a retreat at a convention center working on equity and sharing our successes and best practice. What other creative ways do people bring staff together to learn? #leadupchat#edchat#satchat
A4.1 Be real, and I mean real.... Edutainment should be rolling off the tips of everyone's tongue in these chats. It is just as much entertainment as education. It's a partnership. Motivate... We have good days, we have bad- there's always tomorrow #leadupchat
A5: Be a continual reminder of what is possible. Helping people remember to take the time to recharge. Our students need us at our best if we are going to help them achieve great things.
#leadupchat
I'm passionate about seeing people (teachers, friends, students, colleagues, family, etc.) succeed. I think that's what we're supposed to help people do.
#leadupchat
A5: Keep the main thing the main thing and help streamline things that can become overwhelming and time consuming for staff taking away focus. #leadupchat
A6: My passions change but what I think stays constant is I want my students to think critically, to grow outside their bubble and see the world, through others perspective be it through text or experience. Kids will change the world but we need to help them see it #leadupchat
A4: Thanks to the book H3 Leadership, I have been reflecting on calling versus assignment. My calling is to impact teaching and learning. I fulfill my calling when I stay true to my values: lead with integrity, humility, empathy, creativity and courage. #leadupchat
A5: A few nuts & bolts on this one...leverage tech to manage time, empower staff to clear your emails, frequent 2-minute meetings, anticipate objections, preempt challenges. #leadupchat
A6: Going to need more time to look back through the responses and process. Super thankful for this hour and all of the amazing peeps who were part of this #leadupchat!
A6 My passion is giving up control as much as possible. Letting Ts design curriculum, Ss choose learning targets & how they'll show they've met them, personalized PD #leadupchat
Life 360 = I’m on a swivel 24/7. The job of a leader/educator never stops. We’re constantly learning, thinking about ways to better educate our students. The future is dependent upon us.....
#leadupchat
A6 I am passionate about reading. I am passionate about writing. I am passionate about notebooks. I am passionate about learning. But at the heart of all of that, I am passionate about communication, and how to continually be better at it. #leadupchat
A5: Remember that everyone is a teacher to someone. Set the example for those you serve. Get your hands dirty. Know the way, show the way and go the way with your team. #leadupchat
A6 Helping my students become good people is my passion and working as a strong team including students, staff, families, and community. I am starting my week with some positive notes and showing gratitude to my staff and students. #leadupchat
RTQ6: Leading a a 360 LIfe requires passion!
As an educator, what are you most passionate about and what are you going to do differently as a result of ideas shared on #LeadUpChat today?

A6: I'm passionate about growth and reaching potential. as a VP I need to invest more into my people, know them, support them and encourage them to strive for excellence. I need to say thank you more often! #leadupchat
Q6 The tweets about not trying to do it all alone really hit home. I’m going to find ways to empower my IAs to take more responsibility. They have the skills and are willing. I just have to give up some control. #leadupchat
A6: Thanks #LeadUpChat for reminding me of what is important. Modeling optimism and enthusiasm are personal strengths of mine. I needed to be reminded to make sure my game face is ALWAYS on, even when worn down! They are worth it!! #LeadUpChat
So true-- if your best people feel like they can count on you and that you value coaching them rather than see them as an interruption, they'll stick around. #leadupchat
A6 I am passionate about making a difference, about transforming education and about spreading kindness. I am passionate about leading with my heart and trying to find ways to spread joy, generosity and celebration. Making life a bit better for others. #leadupchat
A6-My passion and drive comes from wanting students to see that they can change the world with one small word, act, or initiation, and that changing the world starts with a good foundation of education, service, and self-awareness. #leadupchat
A6 I'm passionate about celebrating growth. I aspire to show how awesome people are, celebrating them each day. Ss & faculty people want to be celebrated, acknowledged, loved, so I truly try every day to love on my people! #leadupchat
For me this is A4and A5.. authenticity and reflective when things don't work out. When our ss see this they may become more comfortable and therefore confident to perform which in turn guides the both of you #leadupchat
A6. I want schools to be more of a reflection of our current world where students are part of developing the questions we ask and are empowered to engage in meaningful realistic solutions. Our schools today must be incubators for the 🌎 we want tomorrow #leadupchat
I have to call this out in such a positive way. Having an SRO on this chat today is fantastic! @OfficerJohn326 thank you for joining & sharing as it is important people understand how SRO’s are such a positive influence for S’s, staff, community & education. #leadupchat

Q5: 360 Living is influential.
How are you influencing others to stay the course against the currents of distractions and obstacles that would swamp the team's best efforts? #leadupchat
A6 I think that it's beyond passion- more so a duty at this point- to present facts, details, and information to everyone around us to decide for themselves what they are willing to process. My influence now goes beyond the classroom- so does yours.... #Leadupchat
A6: I am passionate about supporting students who are struggling. We cannot give up! Helping Ts to see all of their Ss strengths and to build on these. All can accomplish great things with the right support and belief in ability! #leadupchat
