#OHEdChat was started by an ad hoc group of Ohio educators and other interested people. For information and updates about the chat, visit https://ohedchat.wordpress.com/
Tricia Ebner, gifted coordinator in NE Ohio. My new year's school resolution is to remember to take a bit of time each day--if only a half hour--to feed my own professional growth, so I can continue to support my students and teachers. #ohedchat
A1: My educational goal: renew my National Board certification. What that really means: continue doing those things which support the growth and learning of my students and fellow educators, and that means continue reflecting! #ohedchat
The strategies are a work in progress! I am prioritizing better eating and sleeping habits. Im carving out time during the week for exercising. Finally, perhaps most significantly, spending 10-15 mins a day, at least, to unplug and just rest. @TebnerEbner#OhEdChat
That unplugging and resting is the hardest thing for me. Sometimes I feel like I have TOO much of the family work ethic in my genetic code! (It's genetics, right? ;) #ohedchat
A1: To continue to improve myself to make an impact on a daily basis and be relentless in establishing a quality school culture and academics! #ohedchat
Tutorials on #CAD for my intro engineering Ss, tutorials on #robotc for Principles of engineering, algebra vids for STEM Alg 2. So far so good. Intro uses them the most, but the other classes are catching on to there usefulness and it saves me from answering the same ?s #ohedchat
A1: To continue to create great learning experiences for my students. I've already tried some new things this school year with success, so I want to continue finding new and innovative ways to change things up! #OhEdChat
Thanks! I keep a list of frequently asked question from students and my videos tend to come from that list. When students are absent I can send them to a video that I know shows them everything I want them to see. It's work on the front end, but easy later on. #ohedchat
I've been working on my blog about my #OneWord2019 . It's delight--both noun and verb definitions. I want to focus on finding the joy in each day, in each situation. Not always easy. #ohedchat

Thanks! This will be my second renewal. Truly, the process has been one of the highlights of my career. I recommend doing it if you can! It's challenging and also so affirming--I rarely take the time for the deep analysis and reflection of my practice and its impact. #ohedchat

Thanks. I had one student out sick Mon. & Tues. this week. She watched all the videos I had for #robotc and was able to blaze past her peers. Not everyone likes them, but they think it's interesting that their teacher is creating YouTube vids. #ohedchat
Hello all! Sorry I will be out tonight, little one has an ear infection and all the fun that goes along with that! Looking forward to reading through all of these. #ohedchat
A1: Robin - IL, to make connections with students by “listening” & more importantly hearing what they have to say. Building Relationships! Somehow I always find the most innovative PD online...because https://t.co/EuYWV8x4G8#ohedchat#hivesummit
Thank you! I just sent @MrHartzlerMath an idea for our last big design challenge of the year for our freshmen. Plus, I'm looking at getting some more real-life experiences for my BioMed juniors. #ohedchat
A2: to be trusted with new opportunities, but also when given new responsibilities to provide access to the resources needed to complete the tasks to my greatest abilities. Given responsibility but no resources leads to struggles. #Ohedchat
I can't "like" an ear infection--hang in there, both of you! Those are no fun, especially with little ones. Looking forward to "seeing" you soon! #ohedchat
A2: Honest, objective feedback from both peers and admins. Beyond that, I’m always looking for new ways to collaborate and brainstorm improvements. #ohedchat
A2: I always treasure thought partners in any of my endeavors. So grateful I didn't scare off @theJoySama when we first started working in gifted together and I asked for her thoughts on my crazy ideas. Still rely on her, @edtechgirl, @DrBDrost, and many more! #ohedchat
A2: I've had great support from peers and admin so far through them saying they thought the idea was good and providing ideas on how to improve. There are several Ts in my school that make vids for students and they all have good ideas to share. #ohedchat
A3: slow down, reflect, take time for myself. I’ve always been one to take on more than I could handle. I’d lose focus on personal life...this year I’m working to find a better balance. #Ohedchat
A3: Working go find more time for myself. Whether that is professional growth, time to get away, recharging, family, whatever. Just finding time for “me”. #ohedchat
A3: Strategies: Intentionally scheduling time to reflect, write, and work, making sure I have my favorite fuzzy socks and plenty of good coffee for my reflection & writing times, and asking others for feedback on my work. #ohedchat
A3: Strategies: always ask one question: “how does it help kids?” Looking forward to seeing what strategies you all have; this is a constant growing edge of mine! #ohedchat
A3: I've been having conversations with Ss I trust to see what works for them and their peers. Before Christmas break I sat down with my STEM alg.2 class and discussed changes they wish I'd make. 1 S said today how impressed he was that I actually made those changes. #ohedchat
My problem is I immediately go to my scrapbooking side and want to make it look like one of my best-ever layouts. Yeah, I'm working on that balance thing. #ohedchat
A3 I plan to collaborate & reach out more to broaden my circle of support & bring new Ss centered initiatives to the classroom even if I'm a bit unsure of how to implement them. Ts should feel empowered to implement new ideas today & not wait until the time is "right". #ohedchat
A3: I will continue to seek #relevant PD for my skill set. I will continue to use my blog https://t.co/EuYWV8x4G8 to learn and practice blogging & technology skills. #ohedchat
Love this---and it's a bit intimidating when we're not sure. One thing I like is the potential of sharing with Ss and reflecting together on the successes and the opportunities for revision and improvement. #ohedchat
RT2: Drive teachers to individualize their instruction and focus on those students who struggle through extra-mile interventions (getting them individualized / small group tutoring, etc.) #ohedchat
A4: don’t take it personally. Students have needs that we need to find. Take this as an opportunity to reach out to other Ts and the student to learn more about how to grow with the student. #Ohedchat
A4: Perspective---try to set everything aside, and think about how school and even life looks from those students' eyes. What might they be feeling, seeing, thinking? Sometimes this can help us see a new approach to take. #ohedchat
A4: Try to make connections with those students... find out what makes them "tick." Is it sports? Music? Video games? Whatever it is, try to make it a part of your class/lessons. Let them know that you understand them #OhEdChat
A4: I had a period of struggle my 1st yr and I created a schedule for the next month (that made me feel better). Then I took the entire next day to explain to the students what my goals were and asked what they needed from me in order to get there. #ohedchat
A1: build on the first half of the year. Have a strong voice in meetings and continue to contribute to the mission of creating individualized education for every kid.
#ohedchat
RT Q4: #ohedchat
Never give up on students. I don't know how many times I've had a student struggle and struggle for months, and then BAM, there's a breakthrough in Q3 or Q4. Know who struggles early, help them often, and do whatever it takes to help.
A4: We all have a “back story”...talk with your student, ‘listen’, learn their “back story” & sometimes that helps to have #empathy. Sometimes the most difficult Ss, help us see something inside of ourselves! #ohedchat
A2: continue to understand that as a new administrator that there are going to be coachable moments and I will take all the coaching I can get.
#ohedchat
In one of @realrapreynolds videos he says he has watched tv shows just so he can better understand what his students are interested in. Little things like that can lead to huge connections with students. #ohedchat

A4 Ss struggle is not all about you. Listen, wait, ignore just a bit of what you're seeing, & make a solid connection w/ the Ss that's not related to the content area or school, so they have a "safe" space to connect w/ the T. Kids just want to know we care about them.#ohedchat
A4: dont be afraid to reboot. Nothing like the new yr to reconnect or if you failed to connect. Take the time to get to know ur student through questioning and developing norms with their input.
#ohedchat
Really well! They told me what kinds of notes they liked and what order they wanted for class. They were very realistic with their desires. When they saw I actually made changes I started getting emails saying this was good/that needs work. It was awesome! #ohedchat
A5: listen. Sometimes not talking or giving advice is what is needed. Listen to them. Give advice when it is asked for, not when you think it’s needed. #Ohedchat
All caught up!
A5: I will support colleagues bu listening, trying to support them, presenting best practices, and doing what is asked to do my part to make our lil ecosystem thrive.
#ohedchat
A5 Judgment is a rampant issue. We need to encourage, support, guide & refer our colleagues to sources, & people who will build them up, to make them better teachers & people. We need to build better bridges rather than tear down walls. #ohedchat
A5: Try to have as many authentic conversations as possible. Listening, sharing ideas, learning from each other. I’m a firm believer that collaboration is the key to success. And if there’s any way that I can help someone, I will! #OhEdChat
A student that I always thought hated me said, "that was a really good lesson Mr Hartzler" and it was a day I really needed to hear it. It got me through the rest of the week. #ohedchat
A5: Its important to check in and be just as engaged with our colleagues as the Ss. Sometimes a colleague can seem “off” its good to make sure they are ok, & offer support whether that is listening, advising; support a Teammate! #ohedchat
A5: I'm trying to figure out a project for #EarthDay with one of our science teachers. And on a broader scope I want to do a better job of talking to more teachers. My school is big enough that it's easy to not see everyone. #ohedchat
A6: I am going to engage Ss even more than I have done. I am going to be more AWARE of my colleagues & cues they may give me that I might have missed before. Positivity & Gratitude are my “GoTo’s!” #ohedchat
1. Read 1 nonfiction book a month
2. Create 1 video per school day (average)
3. 4 hours dedicated to being outside and ENJOYING nature per weekend
