As a teacher, what is your responsibility for a staff member that is not pulling their weight with their students?
As an admin, what do you feel is a teacher's responsibility in this scenario?

@GruntledChalkie- yesterday ended up being (another) epic disaster / but here's proof they enjoyed your game on the long ride to pick up the van that wasn't actually fixed and the ride back with yet another rental #bfc530
Do what it takes to build a relationship first...work with them as part of a team (have them observe you and others, etc.). Model excellence, give them support to do the same, and use radical candor to help them grow. Don't just ignore and complain about it, however! #bfc530

First step is supporting that teacher. Is there anything you can do as a fellow teacher to help them? Help with curriculum? Navigate new school/job? Etc. Admin should already know about this T, but if not I think it is ok to mention concerns. #bfc530
This mornings question is tough! If you know the teacher well enough, you could talk with them. Maybe they are going through something in their personal life that is causing them to not be there totally for their kids. #bfc530
Fabulous! Just found out I was selected as a state STE ambassador 😊I learn so much from my Twitter pln, time to start producing & sharing. What’s up with you? #bfc530
Good morning #bfc530 I'm up before the roosters (only 3:30 in Colorado) but I have a lot of work to do before getting to school. Checking out the PLN live for once.
As a T, I make an effort to help get the staff member on track and to offer my assistance to them. But when the horse refuses to drink the water, I give up, which only hurts the students. I let admin know my thoughts on the situation, but I hate being the whistle blower. #bfc530
There’s a reason I am not an administrator (okay, there probably 20 reasons...) and this is it. We can inspire, model, share, but we cannot supervise colleagues unless we are literally in a position (of leadership) to do so. #bfc530
I was a mentor years ago..The teacher was drowning, but would not take help or advice from me. She actually “fired” me as a mentor. I am not her boss, she did not have to listen to me. (PS she is no longer a teacher) #bfc530

we should also try to remember that not all trachers are the same ... we shouldn't compare teachers as each one of us are unique. yes there are basic skill sets but our interactions with kids will vary #bfc530
As admin, I appreciate it when Ts or Ss let me know about an issue I may not be aware of (sometimes Ts change when I observe). Allows me to do all I can to help. #bfc530
I can't force my opinions/strategies on any colleague. But can keep my door open & put up an #ObserveMe sign so they know my room is open to them if they'd like to watch.
I can share ideas & strategies often so that they might then ask me more.

TRUTH! Complaining about said teacher is toxic and will erode trust throughout the organization. Part of being treated like professionals is owning the profession. That means having difficult, but supportive conversations instead of enabling what's not best for students. #bfc530
To answer today's question- I had this issue more as a coach then a teacher- was a very sticky situation since I consider my team my extended family #bfc530
Supporting each other through relationships and honesty is important for teacher teams. There needs to be trust built between teammates so that we can hold each other to a higher level of expectations through intrinsic motivation. #BFC530
I don’t pretend to feel that I can ‘fix’ anyone else...trying to model what I believe is best for students and the community is what I can do. If that helps to support/influence others, than I believe it is a step in the right direction. #bfc530

What's worked in my school - even with students - is the "BMW" code word. Just using it shuts down the negative, behind the back talk. Part of a the culture. #bfc530
I wish I worked in a setting where we all trusted one another’s intentions enough to coach one another -even informally, but competition and suspicion are strong. That’s why I come here for my PLC. #bfc530
I agree with @casehighprinc that each case is different. However, in my 30 years I have NEVER seen anything to go to the principal about. I work with dedicated teachers who work hard every day. #bfc530
Important to reach out to someone who needs help, but also important to remember that we can't fix everyone. Teachers have their own classrooms to focus on. At some point, admin needs to step in. If not, bring the issue to their attention. #bfc530
I have to say I'm in classrooms a lot and Ts are very open to feedback, but sometimes Ts who are new to the school don't yet understand that we're all learning & growing. Takes time to earn trust #bfc530
Typically, admin already has their eyes on the situation, if not, they soon will, better to perhaps talk to the teacher, see if you can assist in any way.... #bfc530

It depends on the situation and the relationships of people in the building. If a student feels threatened in any way or when multiple interventions or suggestions haven’t worked then I will certainly step in to do whatever I can. #bfc530
My A to the 1st Q: As a T - share your successes and try to motivate. If the other T doesn't change their ways you can't do anything more. As an Admin, same, and if that doesn't work call for a hearing and inform the school supervisor. At least that's how it is in Israel. #bfc530
Work on building a positive relationship and the engagement will result. You don’t have to be best friends but by sharing your best practices or asking them about their’s that fosters engagement. I’ve co-taught with reluctant teachers who then became my best colleagues! #bfc530
Yes our union doesn't allow for us to go to admin about a colleague. But sometimes when you've tried to model and given hints etc but no change... When their neglect of their Ss makes my job harder...
#bfc530
Start with a supportive conversation. Offer to model, co-plan, and share materials, and also be mindful of your time and responsibilities to your own classes. If, after offering support, there are no changes, admin needs to intervene to clarify expectations. #bfc530
It starts with you and how you approach a non-engaged educator. We have to remember that everyone is who and how they are for a reason and the only thing we can control is our actions towards them. To encourage their reactions (engagement) we can only adjust our actions. #bfc530
Finding support through my PLN's has been amazing! It's been a rough year and getting into Twitter in November has been one of the best decisions j have made. 😎 #bfc530

#bfc530 Good Morning! Delaine living in Buncombe Co and working in McDowell Co. The first response is not to assume anything. Find out through friendly conversation with the T in question if there is a personal crisis reason.
Thanks #BFC530. It was great to be live with you this morning. Now I need to get work done seeing that I am up so early. I've got 2 hours before I have to start getting ready for school.
That's the problem when you work as a team and someone isn't pulling their weight. It's not about judging it's making sure you don't end up doing all the work cause you care about the Ss too much. #bfc530

As a P, I’d like a heads up if you are concerned re a colleague’s performance. However, if you’re part of a union & your Admin is not, it’s impt to check in w/ your reps on how to report in a purposeful manner. Otherwise, be supportive & model great teaching practice. #bfc530

If it’s a true student safety concern, your union & Admin will work together in supporting both you & your colleague. As a P, I’ve experienced this directly & was encouraged by how well we worked together. If we start from a place of support, we can do great work. #bfc530
I’ve used @engineerteacher radical candor to motivate, involve, support other Ts before I moved to getting an admin for help. I think of how I want to be treated. Shifting the Monkey from @ToddWhitaker helped me develop these skills. #bfc530

If my Mr. Wooden Cube Man’s rockin moves doesn’t motivate you today, then I have nothing. You show this Wednesday what you are made of (not wood of course 😂). #WednesdayMotivation#bfc530

I was in my car and turning a corner and my power steering went. Was able to get the car home to be towed. Turns out a belt fell off! Yikes! I was so lucky! #bfc530
