.@regieroutman my colleague @pranikoff and I use your book as a required text @bankstreetedu and it is one of our ss favorite. We are so excited to get your new book! TY. Welcome to #G2Great!
A1. Staying focused on the end goal of creating readers and writers! This means access to books and holding time sacred for students to do those very things-read and write. #g2great
A1 At the same time we pursue excellence, we need to create a thriving school culture of empowerment where students & teachers feel safe, valued, and celebrated. That all requires high trust, kindness & collaborative expertise. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A1 I’m not sure that we can accomplish anything if positive relationships aren’t the foundational undergirder of our efforts. Children need a safe space for learning where they know they’re valued above ALL ELSE. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A1: Every single day we read. Every single day we write. Every. Single. Day. How can we learn about reading & writing without being readers & writers? #G2Great
A1: For me it has been the mind shift that more than in depth skills my kids need books and time to read them. #G2Great The skills come with practice a love of books needs to be nurtured.
A1: Reminding teachers about the importance of artistic literacy as well, and that text can come in many forms - song lyrics, artwork, scripts and so much more #g2great
A1. Teaching with a sense of urgency means no time for time-wasters. Time needs to be spent on real reading, real writing, talking and listening. Forget worksheets, etc.... #G2Great
A1: Every single day we read. Every single day we write. Every. Single. Day. How can we learn about reading & writing without being readers & writers? #G2Great
Q1 One literacy essential that I have is the belief that I always have something to learn, so an essential for me is surrounding myself with a PLN that helps me grow as a reading teacher, and reader. #g2great
Hi everyone! SO excited for the #G2Great chat with @regieroutman! I am a former elementary teacher and literacy coach and am currently a teacher educator in SC.
A1 Books are the heart & soul of all we do so they must be everywhere kids turn w/ ample time to listen to & read texts they CAN & WANT to read. We must create a culture where book joy runs rampant! #G2Great#LitEssentials
A1 Also, student engagement, which depends on teaching with meaningful purpose, applying literacy to real-world contexts & issues, and building in some choice are necessities. Compliance on skills-based work is not engagement. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A1:read aloud, shared reading experiences, writing about reading, guided reading, uninterrupted time for read/write, being ready w/the right thing in the moment. #g2great
A1. Staying focused on the end goal of creating readers and writers! This means access to books and holding time sacred for students to do those very things-read and write. #g2great
A1: Having conversations with kids about what they love, what they want to do when they grow up, and how reading & writing will help them get there. #G2Great
A1: Giving students space and time to read and write. If I want students to be better readers, they must read. If I want them to be better writers, they must write. If I want them to affect the world positively, they must read, and share their thinking. #G2Great
A1: keeping in mind why I’m in this to begin with...to assist in the development and nurture life long readers and writers...remembering to say “yes” as often as possible #G2Great
A1 Make the most of our time with our students. Accept that there is never enough time to do it all. It starts with enjoyment. If you’re excited to be there, the students will be too. #G2Great
A1 Fostering a learning community where we are ALL learners and teachers in the system. I learn every day from teachers and students I work with. #G2Great
A1: Urgency means that we must use our time effectively and efficiently! Every minute with Ss and Ts count. Making choices with a targeted lens depicts an urgency to meet the needs of EVERY. SINGLE. STUDENT! #G2Great
A1: my literacy essentials include choice, variety of texts, time to read, discussions, goals & strategies to achieve them, and real relationships with your readers. #g2great
A1 Active engagement in meaningful literacy experiences responsive to the unique needs of kids that honor who they are as humans AND address what they need from us at that time. Lofty but achievable goals! #G2Great#LitEssentials
A1 Equity is perhaps the most crucial literacy essential- ensuring all Ss have equal access to the education they need & deserve. Too many Ss have lack of equity--low expectations, isolated skills teaching, sub-standard texts, & irresponsible assessment. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A1. Lots of quality books. Constantly reflecting on my teaching and learning with other educators. Studying how my students learn, what they need and responding accordingly. #g2great
A1. Trust that is built over time - not a "one and done" because someone in a leadership role likes to use the word - that all team members feel the minute they walk in the door. #g2great
You must foster trusting relationship with Ss, high expectations but providing them with the means to achieve them. Setting purpose with them. Providing authentic text and reading aloud every day. So much more!#g2great
A1: I have created a really enjoyable library for my kids! They get to go "shopping", and I love how they are responsible to find books they love! #kellerliteracy#kisdlit#G2Great
Not to get political but...in your answer @regieroutman we could substitute political culture for school culture and think how much better things would be....just sayin' #G2Great
A1 At the same time we pursue excellence, we need to create a thriving school culture of empowerment where students & teachers feel safe, valued, and celebrated. That all requires high trust, kindness & collaborative expertise. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A1 Absolutely sold out to the idea that every minute of the day students are involved in authentic tasks that readers, writers, thinkers engage in. #G2Great
A2. Knowing students strengths to build on as well as what they are not doing yet…THEN working to provide instruction to move them forward. This includes thinking about time, choice in text, coaching with feedback…#g2great
A1 Active engagement in meaningful literacy experiences responsive to the unique needs of kids that honor who they are as humans AND address what they need from us at that time. Lofty but achievable goals! #G2Great#LitEssentials
Hi #G2Great Faige substitute T in Los Angeles. Will check back on your tweets to read your ideas & questions. This week I subbed in 3rd $ 2nd grade. Moving out of my comfort zone. Authentic way learn about students & their concerns about new stuff, “if they can do it, so can I
A1: Supporting teacher thinking and instructional action around these essentials. T’s need a certain level of empowerment to make thoughtful professional decisions. #G2Great
A1 Active engagement in meaningful literacy experiences responsive to the unique needs of kids that honor who they are as humans AND address what they need from us at that time. Lofty but achievable goals! #G2Great#LitEssentials
A1: My catch phrase from NCTE 16 from @lester_laminack, “Reading and Writing reciprocity!” There is a sense of urgency because if we can make those connections we will have better readers and writers! #g2great
A2 It’s a mindset we need to adopt, that we are teaching readers & teaching writers and recognizing their needs and interests as unique individuals. We are not just teaching reading and teaching writing. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A2: Time must be spent on reading. Model reading. Teach whole-part-whole. Not about isolated skills. Independent reading. Joy of reading. Not logs. Share my love, passion and joy for reading & learning.
#litEssentials#G2Great@regieroutman@stenhousepub@PembrokePublish
A2 Teaching reading is little more than COMPLIANT DOING if reading won’t embrace the joy factor – reading for the pleasure of reading. If we sacrifice our goals for this one, kids lose (& so do we). #G2Great#LitEssentials
A1. If you celebrate the small things day in and day out before you know it ... the earth shaking, big things will come true in the lives of your students and change their futures! #g2great
A1: providing opportunities for students to share their reading lives/experiences with students throughout the school impacts the reading community within the school. #g2great
A2: I can get caught up in teaching my graduate students the skills & strategies they need to teach well, but need to hold what really being a reader is all about as most important. What good do those skills do if they do not help children feel like more capable readers? #G2Great
A1 The principal supporting and funding rich class libraries so students have access and choice. Responding to teachers and students need for longer blocks of time so students can collaborate and have time to read at school.
#G2Great
A1: Every single day we read. Every single day we write. Every. Single. Day. How can we learn about reading & writing without being readers & writers? #G2Great
A2. Don't get off track by confusing tests like DIBELS with real reading. Kids learn what we teach, so we shouldn't teach to a test, but to the end result of engaged lifelong reading. #G2Great
A2: I always wanted my students to read like they would in real life, magazines, articles, novels, on devices and TALK about what they were reading with me and one another #g2great
A2: Help students realize the importance of finding their passions, showing them why it’s important, and how reading (all forms of text) might help them grow those passions into a fulfilling future #g2great
A2: Balance and authenticity. If the end goal is building readers we should be doing what readers do. I am pretty sure that is not drill and kill skill work and a computer reward system. If we want Ss to be readers we need to let them read and help them where they are #g2great
A2 It’s about shifting our focal point solely on the instructional process to the reading process from the reader’s perspective and the thinking that reader does in the course of reading at that moment. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A2: Nudging then further in their reading lives with book talks, authentic questions, sitting beside them and talking about their reading lives, sharing my reading life, requiring them to reflect often about their reading choices and trends. #G2Great
A2:reflect on my daily practice and think, did I teach my students to enjoy books and reading for future years, or just for the task for the day. #g2great
A1: For me it has been the mind shift that more than in depth skills my kids need books and time to read them. #G2Great The skills come with practice a love of books needs to be nurtured.
A2: Give students choice over what they read and ignite their wonder/ curiosity with book talks and read alouds. Share reading experiences to help build a community of lifelong readers. #G2Great
A2. I always question how is what I'm doing making this student WANT to be a reader, NEED to be a reader? If I can't answer these questions, I need to rethink things. #g2great
A2 If we want students become lifelong, comprehending, inquiring readers, most of our reading time must be sustained time for reading mostly texts students self-select. Guided reading is a temporary scaffold to that end, although too often it becomes the main event. #G2Great
A2 being honest with kids the reading fits into all aspects of life - for pleasure, for learning, for information -long texts, shorts texts...trying to honour their choices #g2great
A2: By meeting students where they are and helping them with the skills they need to be a successful reader. I do this through strategy groups and 1:1 conferring #g2great
A2: Making what we teach feel authentic for the students in what they are reading and writing. They will buy in and gain more from what they're reading. #G2Great
A2:reflect on my daily practice and think, did I teach my students to enjoy books and reading for future years, or just for the task for the day. #g2great
A 2 I love sharing stories with my students about my reading life when I was little, books I loved, reading when I was supposed to be doing other subjects, everyone trying to check out a special book at the library... they know you were like them 2. #G2Great
A2 Nothing we ever do from an instructional standpoint will take the place of active engagement in meaningful CHOICE reading. Moment that bring a book & child together breathe new life into our instruction! #G2Great#LitEssentials
Q2 I remember that students are readers by being a reader myself. If I lose sight of what readers really do, I will lose sight of developing readers. Plus, we get to be readers together, connected by literacy. :) #G2great
A2 It’s about shifting our focal point solely on the instructional process to the reading process from the reader’s perspective and the thinking that reader does in the course of reading at that moment. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A2: Balance short-term and long- term literacy goals. Remember that you may help the snowball gather speed, but you might not be the one to enjoy seeing it fully formed at the bottom of the hill. #G2Great
A2: I catch myself gabbing with kids about the next book they should read...just like I do with good friends...I love when they recommend books back to me...it shows we “know” each other as readers ❤️ #G2Great
A2: Constantly asking myself what transferable skills am I teaching my readers so that they can become confident and competent readers who truly love reading.#g2great
A2 Teaching reading is little more than COMPLIANT DOING if reading won’t embrace the joy factor – reading for the pleasure of reading. If we sacrifice our goals for this one, kids lose (& so do we). #G2Great#LitEssentials

If the end goal is to create life-long readers then we must engage Ss with authentic texts and have conversations about these texts. We grow readers when we engage in the actual act of reading. Interacting with text gets us there #g2great
When reading aloud share your emotions and encourage students to share theirs. Cry, laugh, get angry, express joy... students need you to legitimize heart ❤️ and head.#G2Great
A2: By keeping my eyes on @ProfessorNana's TARGET. Trust. Access. Response. Guidace. Enthusiasm. Teen Appeal. Then, taking a Skywalker Approach of trusting I can reach hit this "TARGET" without the aid of a prepackaged program. Trusting in the force of my own reading. #G2Great
#G2Great#kellerliteracy A2 Be a reader vs Do Reading; Be: a choice, driven, internal, transforming, lasting; Do: compliant, motion w/o meaning, external, temporary; To BE is to understand the power of words
A2 So important to remember that reading dispositions and the thinking processes that typify a "readerly" life that we should also model and teach to our growing readers. #g2great
A3 No one ever says “mind and heart.” Reaching the heart is key to full engagement, effort, and highest quality work. Reading & writing poetry works so well in that regard. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A3 1st we look inward to ensure that WE bring heart & mind to the learning experience. We can’t ask kids to be emotionally committed and present in these precious moments if we aren’t. THE END! #G2Great#LitEssentials
YES!...and breathe purpose into the act of reading. I am having a hard time getting some middle school folks on board with the idea of choice reading. We are still using whole class novels, textbooks, and worksheets. Help! #G2Great
A1 Books are the heart & soul of all we do so they must be everywhere kids turn w/ ample time to listen to & read texts they CAN & WANT to read. We must create a culture where book joy runs rampant! #G2Great#LitEssentials
A2 having honest conversations about likes, dislikes and purpose, as well as why reading is meaningful to me - the chance to live a thousand lives... #g2great
A2: pretty neat to see a child grow as a reader as the T continually notices what behavior kids are controlling and what next step instruction they need #G2Great
A2: our actions speak volumes when it comes to teaching reading. We can set examples and make lasting impressions on our students when we share our passion. We must be passionate about our teaching of reading. #g2great
I was so embarrassed when I cried when I was reading aloud to students and I think that’s when a bunch of kids made a lifelong connection to both me and reading in general #g2great
A3. Heart and mind engagment happens when we go beyond just the book, and ask what does this mean for me, my friends, my family, my community? How am I impacted and what am I going to do about it? #g2great
A2: For some, reading comes easy. For others, it’s darned hard work. Either way: Kids need to feel its power, its magic ... help them get bit by the reading bug. Read to them. Read alouds are performances that beg encores. #G2Great
When reading aloud share your emotions and encourage students to share theirs. Cry, laugh, get angry, express joy... students need you to legitimize heart ❤️ and head.#G2Great
A2: Help students realize the importance of finding their passions, showing them why it’s important, and how reading (all forms of text) might help them grow those passions into a fulfilling future #g2great
I have used whole class novels but with choice as well. We read all the time 90% they choose 10% I choose. Works and we have fun. Textbooks and Worksheets for reading? Hard Pass #G2Great
A3: I have had great success with @KyleneBeers BHH framework. I push teachers to connect with other classrooms, near and far, and use technology to support authentic learning and connectedness. #G2Great
A3 Katie @ktkelly14 This is a common problem. I’ll get back to you when I can respond thoughtfully but trust what you know. You’re on the right track. #G2Great#LitEssentials@stenhousepub
YES!...and breathe purpose into the act of reading. I am having a hard time getting some middle school folks on board with the idea of choice reading. We are still using whole class novels, textbooks, and worksheets. Help! #G2Great
Q3 I think mind engagement comes from teaching students to have meaning classroom and club conversations around text. Perhaps the heart engagement comes from choice they have in books & the ability to choose conversation topics that matter to them. Their ideas matter. #g2great
A3 We must ensure that our values & actions aren’t at cross-purposes. We can’t say that we value joyful literacy endeavors but refuse to make room in EACH learning day for those endeavors. #G2Great#LitEssentials
Oh, Regie, so true! And, poetry seems to be on the back burner most of the time! Love your poetry books! Love what poetry can bring to the lives of our readers and writers...untapped potential, friends!! #G2Great
A3 No one ever says “mind and heart.” Reaching the heart is key to full engagement, effort, and highest quality work. Reading & writing poetry works so well in that regard. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A3: Finding passions and cultivating relationships. Without either their is no spirit or engagement at all. Celebrating the differences and recognizing what binds you all together. #G2Great
A3: I create heart by sharing stories that mean a lot to me. Whether it was a story I read as a kid or a book that gave me a strong feeling. This shows kids the enjoyment you can get! #kisdlit#kellerliteracy#G2Great
#g2great A3 Ss are offered choice in independent reading and limited choice for book club books. Putting themselves into characters' shoes engages heart and mind and great discussion!
A3 Very important, full engagement of the heart and mind go along with a culture of celebration, where we first “see” and comment on student and teacher strengths and efforts. This is still far too uncommon. #G2Great#LitEssentials
#g2great Engaged teachers engender engaged students. Teachers must consistently share their enthusiasm for what they are reading, have read, and are looking forward to reading
A3: By letting the students pursue the books they want and read about diverse characters and also ones they can relate to I think that helps with the connections. Also reflecting on our reading in a purposeful way #g2great
A3: honest, safe conversations with students...real feedback that celebrates what they’re already doing well with specific suggestions for taking it one step further #G2great
A3 We must commit to meaningful open-ended CONVERSATIONS (not question interrogations) that revolve around learning & books. This is not an activity we schedule but a spirit we live and breathe. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A3: A lot of modeling and telling them how lucky I am that I get to do what I love all day...talk about books! From K to 5, I love to tell them what a great choice they've made in their library check out. #G2Great
Absolutely @AffinitoLit it is not the strategic reading lesson we teach that makes the difference, (it plays a part) but keeping the students focused on the end goal of reading rich and engaging text, that's where the magic happens. #G2Great
A2: I can get caught up in teaching my graduate students the skills & strategies they need to teach well, but need to hold what really being a reader is all about as most important. What good do those skills do if they do not help children feel like more capable readers? #G2Great
A3 Bringing discussion back to 'what did the character face, overcome?' 'how did they learn and grow?' 'what do we learn from what they experienced?' #g2great
A2: For some, reading comes easy. For others, it’s darned hard work. Either way: Kids need to feel its power, its magic ... help them get bit by the reading bug. Read to them. Read alouds are performances that beg encores. #G2Great
A3: one of my favorite examples of this was when my students were learning about disabilities and they wanted to skype with someone we had learned about and they wanted to raise money for him as well, touched hearts and minds for students and myself #g2great
A3: Make your own reading life visible to Ss. Tell them stories about your strengths and struggles as a reader throughout the years. Engagement will be soaring! Ts are human too! #G2Great
And yes, you DO get a copy of @regieroutman's wonderful book! Congratulation @ML_Buchanan and thank you @stenhousepub! Please follow me and DM your name and address so we can get it out to you. #G2Great
@papabacher shared - As a reluctant reader, I never realized that my reluctancy was not from my ability to read it was from my lack of interest in the books available to me. Once my book diet expanded, I found I really loved reading literature focused on helping others. #g2great
A2: As I tell my incoming K/1st grd parents: "The very best thing you can do to create a reader is to... read! Just read." As Carol Avery said in "And With a Light Touch," it's not rocket science. Thanks to carol, @regieroutman & others, my tchg/lrng life transformed! #G2great
A3. When we teach isolated skills out of the context of meaningful text, we lose the heart. Readers tackle skills more readily when they are hungry to get to the meaning. The mind will follow the heart! #G2Great
A3: When I observe a teacher who consistently engages their own heart and mind and is articulate about their beliefs, they’re often successful in engaging the hearts and minds of the students in front of them. #G2Great
A3 We must commit to meaningful open-ended CONVERSATIONS (not question interrogations) that revolve around learning & books. This is not an activity we schedule but a spirit we live and breathe. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A4 From minute Ss step on bus/through doors, greeted positively by name, high expectations, supportive materials & resources, nec’y food, drink, play & recess to thrive! Ss help set up classroom space.

A3:I start by making sure my classroom library offers titles that match my Ss and their diversity. By having windows and mirrors to show diff perspectives/experiences my Ss are better able to make connections to their hearts and minds. #g2great
#G2GREAT I was reading Kadir Nelson’s illustrated picture book that has an excerpt of MLK’s “I have a dream speech” to my third graders and almost started crying my students could tell and clapped at the end as they were so moved. They feel what we feel.

A3: I share my reading life; engage my students in the reading world through twitter w/ authors, a vast selection of books, after school group to spread reading love throughout the school. Reading is w/in my heart & mind so it is not superficial. #g2great
A3: I think we miss the part of rigor that taps and grapples with the affect. We can do this. Even with older students. Today, I read LOVE to 16 and 17 year olds, followed by my letter (blog) to the author and the illustrator. Special book and writing moment in #Room407. #G2Great
There needs to be a wild sense of freedom, exploration, discovery, in reading for students to value it. That can be guided, but not mandated, by teachers or programs. #G2Great
A3: We can't overlook the value of CHOICE for students! Especially in regards to books, they need to be the ones making the decisions about what they read. Don't shackle them with levels! #g2great
A3 Again it goes to purpose and engagement. Give students choice and say in their learning so it’s relevant to them. Provide opportunities to take their learning beyond classroom walls. Publish their writing, book talk with other classrooms, write to real people. #G2Great
A3: I have had great success with @KyleneBeers BHH framework. I push teachers to connect with other classrooms, near and far, and use technology to support authentic learning and connectedness. #G2Great
A3: Make your own reading life visible to Ss. Tell them stories about your strengths and struggles as a reader throughout the years. Engagement will be soaring! Ts are human too! #G2Great
A3 Student models are one way to get at heart and mind engagement. Who in the class is responding, reading, or writing with heart at this moment? Let that child share his/her work. Savor it together. #g2great
A3: I ask students to follow their interests in their reading lives. When we write, I ask what stories are in their hearts. We create heart maps and constantly discuss the reading and writing they find meaningful. #G2Great
#G2Great#kellerliteracy A3 “Educating the mind without educating the ♥️ is no education at all” The mind is temporary but the heart is everlasting, when we value voice & honor diversity we tap into what matters most to our Ss
A3: one of my favorite examples of this was when my students were learning about disabilities and they wanted to skype with someone we had learned about and they wanted to raise money for him as well, touched hearts and minds for students and myself #g2great
A4 First we make sure the environment is based on shared ownership. Ts try to create a “perfect” room before kids even get there, How is this possible if they aren’t part of the design mix? #G2Great#LitEssentials
A4 So much depends on respecting all Ss & family’s culture, hearing all the voices, sharing the power & responsibility w/students, adopting a mind set of “our classroom” not “my classroom, & celebrating strengths before needs. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A3: when it comes to engaging both the heart & mind of my students, I often think, “How would I want someone to respond to me if I asked this question or expressed this struggle?”...and go from there... #G2great
A3. When we teach isolated skills out of the context of meaningful text, we lose the heart. Readers tackle skills more readily when they are hungry to get to the meaning. The mind will follow the heart! #G2Great
We have to see each reader in their own light. There is no one size fits all- thus we need reading and writing workshops to be daily non-negotiables. #G2Great
A3: My students would become engaged just by my emotional responses to books. I would share favorite books and authors and they would seek those same books out later. My reactions, grew theirs, whether love, outrage, empathy, pity, appreciation. Sharing matters. #g2great
A1 The principal supporting and funding rich class libraries so students have access and choice. Responding to teachers and students need for longer blocks of time so students can collaborate and have time to read at school.
#G2Great
Thanks, Regie! I appreciate it. I am fortunate that I can visit so many different classrooms as part of my work but sometimes it can be discouraging when you see some of these ineffective and damaging practices occurring often with our most vulnerable learners. #G2Great
A4: encouraging discussions where every voice is heard. Using mentor texts that address social/emotional issues to spark conversations. Just listen to Ss- validate their feelings. #G2Great
A4: Create a culture of empathetic learners. Model patience, understanding, and perseverance. Listen to and value one another. Ss are a product of their classroom culture. #G2Great
#g2great Engaged teachers engender engaged students. Teachers must consistently share their enthusiasm for what they are reading, have read, and are looking forward to reading
A4: I make sure that the Maslow's needs of my students are being met. Do they need sleep? Take a small nap. Are they hungry? Here is some snacks. "Maslow's before Bloom's!" #g2great
A4: I think allowing them to be themselves as readers, talk to them about their reading, encourage them to try something new, let them lay on the floor and read, encourage them to think about the character, learn empathy #g2great
Try making passion boards with them.... helps students that struggle with thinking of things. Throw down a bunch of magazines and what are the images and words they pull out? #G2Great
They are wonderful starting places. I ask students to return to them throughout the year and add books, characters, and pieces of writing that have moved them. #G2Great
Hello everyone. The inflight wifi just kicked on (after a lot of foot tapping and impatient whining). So happy to be here with Regie & our #G2Great family. TY for putting up with ROBO Mary for a bit! And thank you for being here Regie! @regieroutman
A4 Resources, time, joy, respect, dialogue, ownership, flexibility of purpose – and always with students at the center of our efforts. We must ensure that all of these are in the daily learning mix. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A3 We have to remind kids often that readers are changed by what they read. Doesn't matter the genre, I should engage to the point that I have a change of heart/mind when I read. Approach each text with the joyful anticipation transforming thoughts and feelings. #g2great
Q3 Being honest about our own reading lives- sharing strengths, struggles, talking about abandoning books, modelling that we read for a variety of purposes. #g2great
A4: tend to purchase books for my library that i know will reach/connect with my students. After I read some books, I know who will want to read it because I get to know each of my students. Ss are more than a body in the room. #g2great
A4 An intellectual culture is a necessity. The only way to teach meaningful, challenging content each day is to teach reading & writing across the curriculum—in social studies, science, & the arts-- & not as separate entities. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A4: Obviously, choice is a huge factor in thriving. But beyond that, also teaching them how to find books they can be independent with and not get frustrated and give up. #G2Great
I love the idea of a "culture of celebration" and starting with and noticing what the student controls/ almost controls. Also, so important in relationships with colleagues. #g2greathttps://t.co/awOT697230
A3 Very important, full engagement of the heart and mind go along with a culture of celebration, where we first “see” and comment on student and teacher strengths and efforts. This is still far too uncommon. #G2Great#LitEssentials

A4 students need to feel safe and valued. Show you care by inquiring about their lives, celebrate the things they share and share your own life with them. It builds a community that is conducive to learning #G2Great

A4 Notice who does most of the talking. When PD Pearson was asked how much we should focus on I DO of a gradual release (teacher-centered) his answer was, “As little as possible.” #G2Great#LitEssentials
Yes! Do we get joy about writing a book summary for our adult book clubs? Who would want to answer questions every chapter?? We need to ask ss to do what we do in the real reading world. #G2Great
A2: I always wanted my students to read like they would in real life, magazines, articles, novels, on devices and TALK about what they were reading with me and one another #g2great
#g2great I need to check this one out. We are using a version of accountable talk right now to keep Ss on track, but sometimes it can seem forced. Is this a resource appropriate for 4th grade? TIA
A4: I support their teachers to they are able to support their students. This was a great reminder that I can do this in more ways than just supporting teacher knowledge. Little things matter. #G2Great
A4: Honor their interests and let them build the environment with you. Let go the image of having the perfect room. The perfect room is the happy one where students can honor their choices and creativity. Just LISTEN to them and remember the power of your positivity. #g2great
Hello everyone. The inflight wifi just kicked on (after a lot of foot tapping and impatient whining). So happy to be here with Regie & our #G2Great family. TY for putting up with ROBO Mary for a bit! And thank you for being here Regie! @regieroutman
A4: we need to know who we are teaching in order to reach them. Using books to reach our students heart and minds means we truly need to know who they are. We need to figure out what will draw them into rdg life. #g2great
ONE NIGHT ONLY: #G2Great chat participants, get $5 off @regieroutman's new book, Literacy Essentials. Use code REGIE at checkout. Offer expires at midnight EST tonight, 1/11.

A5: Reciprocal by using writing products for more reading for OUR class or other classrooms. Use R to emphasize how reader is helped by author’s craft. Use W to show what notice and love in reading craft.
#litEssentials#G2Great@regieroutman@stenhousepub@pembrokepublish
A5. Looking at our mentors, in texts that we read, and saying, “I can do that!” Students writing like the authors they adore. Then reading that writing and celebrating the experience of creating our own pieces. #g2great
A4: We talk, we look at books that address real things. we stopped everything just to consider that we do not know everyones life so the jokes and things people tell can be hurtful so be kind. Little things. Tomorrow we are reading "Love" by @mattdelapena just because #G2Great
A3 Very important, full engagement of the heart and mind go along with a culture of celebration, where we first “see” and comment on student and teacher strengths and efforts. This is still far too uncommon. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A4: Recognizing the subtle differences between "engaged" and "ennui" as they appear on the screen. And then witnessing how they differ when they are manifest in the classroom. I cannot be both. They cannot be both. We cannot be both. #g2great
Absolutely! I highly recommend it. @pranikoff not only addresses strategic moves, but she also writes in the most beautiful way. A true pleasure to read. Let me know how you like it @MrsPalmer23#G2Great
#g2great I need to check this one out. We are using a version of accountable talk right now to keep Ss on track, but sometimes it can seem forced. Is this a resource appropriate for 4th grade? TIA
A4 I strive to know 10 things about each child outside of school #Kidsdeserveit, feed them when they are hungry, hug them when they need it. AND listen...#G2Great
Totally agree, we can not underestimate how important it is that our classrooms are places where students feel safe to take risks. Learning is built on connectedness in every sense. #G2Great
I believe students should negotiate class arrangement, create expectations, collaborate with each other and teacher as much as possible, and support each other. Put students at center and help them gain independence. #G2Great

A4: Never stop asking yourself if you would want to be a student in your classroom. Are you having them do things you wouldn’t do? If you are passionate about your teaching and what you are asking them to do, they will be inspired! #g2great
A5 Here’s where inspiring stories are crucial-- those we & our Ss love to tell, read, read aloud, write, and write together. It’s why I deliberately weave personal & professional stories into Literacy Essentials. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A5 Mentor texts kids love as much as we do is key. When they LOVE what they read then writing will be inspired by reading rather than simply assigned (or immersing vs. doing). #G2Great#LitEssentials
A4: Validating their reading choices, & listening to the personal stories they want to share through writing. I open up dialogue in my classroom by sharing my own personal writing. I try to be as vulnerable by sharing my reading/writing life & sharing my shortcomings. #G2Great
A4: By remembering the difference between expectations and stakes. High expectations and low stakes often go hand in hand when it comes to fostering significant literacy learning. #G2Great
A4: Having a learning environment where they can be confident and also be okay with errors. Understanding that we all have different weaknesses and strengths. My students know I make errors all the time and those errors just help me to learn something new! #kisdlit#g2great
A4 Absolutely relationships. Listening with care. Responding thoughtfully to their needs. Being present as a fellow human being. Sharing your life with students. #g2great
A4 help create a safe environment building trust with each and every Ss. Make sure they know they are safe to take risks and Ts take risks as well. Learn from failure and celebrate everything great! #g2great

A5: I just saw an idea the other day on Twitter...students wrote a note in the cover of the book to the nect reader....talk about a love letter! Love this idea! #g2great
#G2GREAT A5- I started early with my first graders to know if they can say it they can write it. Built their schema through RA so they had a lot to say…then write.
A4 An intellectual culture is a necessity. The only way to teach meaningful, challenging content each day is to teach reading & writing across the curriculum—in social studies, science, & the arts-- & not as separate entities. #G2Great#LitEssentials
Flexible seating this year with my middle schoolers and I LOVE it! It's changed my classroom so much. (Personally, I love not having to make the dreaded seating chart!) #G2Great
#G2Great#kellerliteracy A4 Ss must see themselves within the books that line our shelves, classrooms must be a safe space that honors risk taking and nurtures growth, a place that values voice, and a T who believes nothing is impossible and sees themselves as a fellow learner
A5 It’s so important for us to model how we honor the reciprocal nature of reading/writing in our own lives. If we wouldn’t be excited to write the answers to 10 Qs then why would we expect kids to? #G2Great#LitEssentials
A5: Use examples from books, magazines, newspapers as exemplars when we write. When we read we talk about craft, just like when we write we talk about craft. Model & talk about both interchangeably instead of in the subject times.#G2Great#LitEssentials
Oh Mary, you bring up such a good point... It's about thinking, not regurgitating facts! Isn't that why we value reading, b/c it makes us think? We need to show that that is what we value in the classroom...deep thinking! #G2Great
A2 It’s about shifting our focal point solely on the instructional process to the reading process from the reader’s perspective and the thinking that reader does in the course of reading at that moment. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A5 #g2great I celebrate the reciprocal nature of reading and writing by using them both for real purposes all day long, every day, all the time. They are the tools that help us expand our hearts and minds.
A5: Gove an authentic purpose for the reading and writing. Let students use it to take informed action on matters that mean the most to them. Let them see the impact their words can have. #g2great
A3: Again, it’s hard to beat the read aloud. Supplement with shared reading. “Let me read the opening lines of a few books, ladies and gentlemen... which one do you like best? Why? You know some people say it’s too hard for grade __ but we will read it together...” #G2Great
A5: Please bear with me celebrating @mattdelapena and @lorenlong's LOVE in one more thread. Here is a book that invites the consideration of defining the intangible by tangible means. Isn't this what writing by default is designed to do? Beautiful. Read/Write connection. #g2great
A5 Noticing & naming what authors do well—including student authors—is key to high quality writing, deep reading, and is one of the best ways to teach & apply author’s craft. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A5 Using Jeff Anderson's mentor sentence approach- helps students look for and appreciate good writing and use what they read as a springboard for writing (@writeguyjeff) #g2great
A5. For our youngest learners, many literacy skills are learned more easily in writing than reading --- so spending plenty of time writing will show up in their reading! And I tell them that. #G2Great
A5 With everything my students write, they always have the opportunity to publish and read it to an audience. We write to be read and we read what we write. #g2great
A4 This is key @mollienye72 The best way to teach author’s craft in reading and to apply that craft in writing is to read and hear read aloud lots of great literature and notice what discerning authors do.
#G2Great#LitEssentials@stenhousepub
A5: Give an authentic purpose for the reading and writing. Let students use it to take informed action on matters that mean the most to them. Let them see the impact their words can have. #g2great#g2great
A5 Begin with books worth reading! Writing about books worth reading make reading/writing kid worthy. Both matter and should be the guiding force of all we do to make this critical connection. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A5: When a S shares a piece of writing with me, I often tell them I can’t wait to read what they write next. I want them to know I am eager to be their reader and that they’ll always have an audience. #G2Great
I’m really getting into mentor texts too. It helps give a frame or style for those kids who have a hard time with written output or processing. #g2great
A4: So many essentials here, but one that sticks out to me is the modeling of vulnerability. What if ss see that we too have challenges in our reading lives...that it isn't always easy for us. We create a much more authentic reading community. #G2Great
I love how we can bring things back to what would we expect ourselves to do? It ties back to thinking and planning with authentic, meaningful activities! #g2great
A5 It’s so important for us to model how we honor the reciprocal nature of reading/writing in our own lives. If we wouldn’t be excited to write the answers to 10 Qs then why would we expect kids to? #G2Great#LitEssentials
A5: Using books and authors we’re reading, as mentors of our own writing...listening for their voices and styles & finding ways to reflect that in our writing #G2Great
Sadly my inflight wifi is not cooperating and keeps bumping me off. But well worth the wait to get on and see all of this wisdom waiting for me! #G2Great
A5: reading and writing feeds off of one another. I like to use writing, so that the students understand that writers have a message just like they do. They develop into readers, as they develop into writers. #g2great
A5: As a classroom teacher, I wrote when my Ss wrote. I told them about my reading and writing life.I made it seem like they were one in the same, to help them feel that way as well. #G2Great
A6: Real life reading is books, magazines, newspapers, etc. NOT stories chopped out of books. HOOK students on the JOY of reading to learn, to be someone else, to travel…(Ind. Rdg time Every Day)
#litEssentials#G2Great@regieroutman@stenhousepub@pembrokepublish
Wouldn't miss my chance to learn and share even more! Thursdays are special for this teacher! Thx for providing such a wonderful experience for all #g2great friends!
A6. Access to texts…and lots of it! Organized in an inviting way that draws in the browser! Knowing the readers’ interests in the class to be sure that there is something for everyone!#g2great
A5 Using more of an inquiry approach to mentor texts: What do you notice the writer doing here? How does this craft choice impact you as a reader? How might you try it in your writing? #G2Great
If we treat our classrooms like it’s OUR space, how can we possibly expect kids to feel that they are able to have ownership? We can’t say one thing and DO another. #G2Great
I believe students should negotiate class arrangement, create expectations, collaborate with each other and teacher as much as possible, and support each other. Put students at center and help them gain independence. #G2Great

A5: Using mentor text to identify what good writers do and then showing students that they are authors themselves by allowing them to write! ❤️❤️📝 #G2Great
A6 TIME is a gift we give kids. Award-winning classroom libraries won’t a difference w/o our time commitment. No time for reading? It’s inexcusable to allow anything to rob kids of this time. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A6 We teachers have to be readers & share favorite authors, reading habits, & reading strategies we use w/ Ss & colleagues. It’s hard to prioritize independent, free-choice reading if we are not readers ourselves. #G2Great#LitEssentials
Wouldn't miss my chance to learn and share even more! Thursdays are special for this teacher! Thx for providing such a wonderful experience for all #g2great friends!
A6 Lots of booktalks (by T and Ss) and well-stocked classroom library all kids to choose books they are interested in and excited about reading. #G2Great
A5: we also get to see more of who our students are through writing. We see the hesitancy, the low confidence, the ease with expressing oneself, and the lack of fear in regards to mistakes. #g2great
A5: The reciprocal nature of reading and response as we often see it out there reminds me of Billy Collins's poem, "The Lanyard." The story gives us this much to think about and we exchange all of its gifts with a list of multiple choice questions? Reading robbery. #g2great
A6: We budget portion of Title I to purchase books for classroom libraries. Spend time sharing teaching ideas to inspire writing, more reading. #g2great
A6: I ask my grad students to read children’s lit in every class I teach to remind them they need to be readers to connect with their students as readers. I also lead virtual children’s literature book clubs so teachers get credit for their reading…which leads to more! #G2Great
A5: workshop invites Ss to write and create books that others want to read...they experience such pride and joy watching someone else devour their newly published books #G2Great
A5 When I'm tching reading, I talk purposefully about noticing the things the author/illustrator did, when tchg. writing, I talk about what we can do as writers to interest our readers.#G2Great
A6: Get out of their way. Aside from that help them with what fits them at first. That does not mean choosing for them, it means being there to guide them if they need it. 1/2 #G2Great
Again, you must really know your students. Provide access and volume to texts that they want to read. @Stephharvey49 shared this thought with me, create the library for the kids you expect. Revise it for the kids you get. #G2Great
A6: I advocate for our striving readers. Many times teachers feel that read-to-self time is a waste of time for these students. Strivers deserve the time to enjoy reading self-selected books just as much as the higher readers. #G2Great
A6 You can't bring it to life without a huge, inclusive classroom library that you are always updating. The school library should strive for the same: a quality, updated, expansive collection. Our librarian listens to students and buys the books they WANT to read! #g2great
A5 Here’s where inspiring stories are crucial-- those we & our Ss love to tell, read, read aloud, write, and write together. It’s why I deliberately weave personal & professional stories into Literacy Essentials. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A6: I can proudly say I never told a kid they couldn’t read a book they chose, instead I gave them support as they were reading, checking in with them more often, talking about vocabulary, background knowledge...read anything you want and ask when it doesn’t make sense #g2great
A5: Let them inspire you! Challenge them to turn you on to books. Give them a topic that embodies life skills - like resilience, perseverance, success - and have them search for the best books that all connect. Let them discover how you can all connect through books. #g2great
A6: a well-stocked classroom library with old and new favorites. Explicit instruction in selecting books that will both move readers forward and captive them. Frequent conferring. #G2Great
Let children organize our library and request books. Books for children to borrow for home reading. Time, time and more time for reading of their choice #g2great
A6 It’s so crucial to set the stage by explicitly teaching kids how we choose books and supporting (and honoring) their efforts. We must also make sure we have the resources that will beckon our readers. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A6. Access to texts…and lots of it! Organized in an inviting way that draws in the browser! Knowing the readers’ interests in the class to be sure that there is something for everyone!#g2great
A6. We have areas all over the school where students can read and shelves filled with books they can select from - sure, just ask me how student achievement SOARED at this at-risk school w/ focus on reading! #g2great
#g2great Q5 I try to model how my being a writer drives my reading in so many ways. Because I write my reading is always, in part, a way to gather ideas for my writing. My reading is wide awake, because I am a member of the reading/ writing club h/t to Frank Smith
A4: “I am proud of you” and “I believe in you” and “You have come so far as a reader” often bring smiles - and renewed effort - on the faces of the most downtrodden children #G2Great
A6 Share your own passion about reading. Kids should know that you are addicted to reading great books. And that you are always looking for new book recommendations from them! #G2Great
A6: Open library! Lunch in the library! I try to be a constant presence in my Ss and colleagues lives that reminds them of the joy of reading. #G2Great
It is very hard to teach when we don't feel passion...and the ss can feel the lack of passion and lose interest. It is one of the continual check-ins we need to make as teachers...how can I make sure I am passionate about what I am teaching? #G2Great
A5 Here’s where inspiring stories are crucial-- those we & our Ss love to tell, read, read aloud, write, and write together. It’s why I deliberately weave personal & professional stories into Literacy Essentials. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A62/2 Today I had students decide their book club selection wasn't working. They decided that. Others tomorrow might do the same. This is how we support them by letting them know what they want to do is ok then helping them figure it out #g2great
A6:providing daily, protected time to read independently is a non-negotiable. I also continue to revisit with my Ss how to make good fit choices and the importance of reflecting on your reading life to adapt and change when necessary. #g2great
A6 We ruin reading enjoyment, efficiency, & engagement for many Ss by breaking reading up into bits & pieces and teaching skills in isolation. With whole-part-whole teaching, not part-to-whole, students are more likely to become self-teaching & see the big picture. #G2Great
A7 Esp. in HS-if they're reading Sparknotes, not reading at all, not doing assignments , or "cheating," who is at fault? Why keeping assigning things that have no value to students? Are you teaching what you WANT to teach, or are you teaching what kids NEED? #G2Great
By spending my waking hours, and sleepless nights, in the expansive work of creating possibilities of inclusivity w/ educational justice seeking, equity pursuing revolutionary edus coast to coast to create more inclusive spaces for ALL children. #g2great A4
A6 By having a well stocked living classroom library, daily independent reading time, daily book talks and recommendations from myself and by their peers, and by never limiting a students choice based on their level #G2Great
A6: I can proudly say I never told a kid they couldn’t read a book they chose, instead I gave them support as they were reading, checking in with them more often, talking about vocabulary, background knowledge...read anything you want and ask when it doesn’t make sense #g2great
A5 #g2great We use mentor texts as a read aloud, then as a springboard for discussion, then use the form or style for writing, then read our writing to each other aloud. We often use an app called @writereaderapp which honors the emergent writing of young learners.
A6: I can proudly say I never told a kid they couldn’t read a book they chose, instead I gave them support as they were reading, checking in with them more often, talking about vocabulary, background knowledge...read anything you want and ask when it doesn’t make sense #g2great
A6:You must be deliberate to provide opportunities for independent reading throughout the day. Promoting choice honors the reader’s mind, heart, & interests and speaks to their individuality. We can be equals when we share our thoughts & ideas around texts we’re reading #g2great
A5: As little kids lrn to read, they are also rdg to lrn. Through our attempts at wrtg (and those mimicked moves we make based on what we’ve seen our fav authors do), we become inspired to wrt even more. All the rdg & writing chngs us as scientists, mathematicians... #G2great
A6: It is important that Ts are familiar with what interests their readers have. Next, Ts must actually read books so that they can make recommendations. The other essential part is modeling independent reading! #G2Great
A6 Make room for authentic collaborations @ texts: book ads, discussions, exploratory ventures - NOT silly STUFF that dishonors what we claim we value (ie: collages). Put your efforts where your mouth is. #G2Great#LitEssentials
This is so incredibly important Matt. I wish that every school made expenditure on books their first priority. We make choices in the name of kids every day and so we have to choose how we expend our money (and efforts) wisely. #G2Great
A6: We budget portion of Title I to purchase books for classroom libraries. Spend time sharing teaching ideas to inspire writing, more reading. #g2great
#g2great A6 Reading takes you places - it's Ss virtual window to the world. By keeping up w/new @TitleTalk, sharing my reading life & inviting Ss to share theirs, we keep books as center stage. Energy is high & excitement abounds when we add new books. Just got @BNBuzz box today!
#G2Great#kellerliteracy A6 Make it a priority, protect the time, invest in quality diverse literature, invest in the relationships between T & S via Conferring and S & S via sharing books, priceless

#G2GREAT#kellerliteracy A6 Frequent book talks; lots of baskets of books around the room which students help to restock often; students can donate their own books which they enjoy
A7: Fight for funding equity-rural vs. urban. Schools-small vs. large. ALL means ALL. In a state the size of Finland, we CAN and WILL do better. Resist silly mandates, continue to educate parents & community.

A7. Knowing students strengths, understanding where they are on the progression, and providing support and instruction based on their needs. This may be more time for some, this may be enrichment for others. If it was my OWN child, what would I desire for him or her? #g2great
A5 Show Students that after reading and loving a text, they can return to it and read it with a writer’s eye to appreciate and learn about writing craft and technique. #G2Great
#g2great Q5 I try to model how my being a writer drives my reading in so many ways. Because I write my reading is always, in part, a way to gather ideas for my writing. My reading is wide awake, because I am a member of the reading/ writing club h/t to Frank Smith
❤ is at the center of it all. It's the only authentic way for us to grow in community with one another, in the classroom, in our homes, in our communities at large. #g2great A3 #RadicalLove ❤
Trying to bring whole-part-whole to our PLC and it's a struggle for teachers who want to attack skills (mercilessly) first...open to suggestions :) #g2great

Children are amazing self-regulators. They often abandon the book that is too difficult before I need to step in. I love watching their balancing act as they learn to find the books that are the right fit for them, regardless of "level" #G2Great
A6: I can proudly say I never told a kid they couldn’t read a book they chose, instead I gave them support as they were reading, checking in with them more often, talking about vocabulary, background knowledge...read anything you want and ask when it doesn’t make sense #g2great
A7 It’s a necessity we become advocates for our students, especially in high poverty schools where the needs are so great. That means knowledgably lobbying for better resources, literature, challenging curriculum, and expert teachers. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A7 We can’t accomplish this goal if we don’t know kids as human beings AND as learners. We must be good kidwatchers & value assessment embedded in the learning process above scores/labels #G2Great#LitEssentials
Two of my favorite lines from notebook reflections! "I am the boss of my own notebook..." and "The first notebook has changed my life..." I love my students! #haseltinenotebooks#BAMyr1@BAM_MS_Official
Great to have one of my dearest and wisest colleagues here tonight. Thank you @ThoughtfulRead for being my North Star. Yes, whole-part-whole teaching is crucial. We continue to waste kids’ time and brain power with bits and pieces. #G2Great#LitEssentials@stenhousepub
A7: Our books aren't leveled. We used to be an AR school, but we stopped spending the money on it and now students read what they want/like regardless of level. #G2Great
A6: I really, really appreciate that a friend here mentions @Stephharvey49 approach to building a classroom library. Even when I'm at a Friends of the Library sale, I keep thinking, "Oh. . ._________ would love this book." Readers are on my mind. Books go in their hands. #g2great
A7: Student Voice and Choice in what they read and as much as possible in how they respond to reading. I need to make more time to intervene with those that need a hand up but it is tricky in JH as the stigma of struggling seems much worse #G2Great
I just am studying @mattdelapena new, amazing book LOVE to use as a mentor text for a book I am writing! Yes, Bravo for the mentor texts and how reading and writing intertwine! #G2Great

A7: in order for this to be a reality, you have to really know each one of your students- academically and personally. Then you can determine what they need most. #G2Great
#G2GREAT A6-Believe in the students, provide them with books, time, and the instruction they need beginning where they are functioning, not a bunch of skill and drill sheets.
A6: Have a group called Reading Ambassadors (4th and 5th graders). They have selected books for read alouds for grades PreK-3 in our school. They are also going in & reading to the Ss. Time to rd creates reading love. #g2great
A6 By having a well stocked classroom library where they have free choice to choose books that interest them. Also by tchging them there are 3 ways to read a book. #G2Great
#g2great I pushed for $ to be allocated to classroom librarires in all K-5 classes at our school for new budget. Our amazing principal was successful in getting approval and has earmarked a little extra for our grade level. Now need to decide best way to spend $. Poetry is a gap.
A7: NEVER think a student can’t do something based on their abilities or resources. Set your standards high.... they will rise to meet them and be proud. #g2great
A7 Having worked in a Title I school for so many years, I have to say the number one way to achieve this is to truly believe every child can learn. Without that belief, there is no equity, there is no push to make sure they reach their full potential. #g2great
And even when they manage to muddle through we are giving them such a misconception of reading that can negatively impact reading for years to come. #G2Great
A7 Rigorous literacy focus in PLC keeping goals in mind for ALL students. Always making time for conferences, and many conversations with teaching team to discuss strengths and needs #g2great
A4: “I am proud of you” and “I believe in you” and “You have come so far as a reader” often bring smiles - and renewed effort - on the faces of the most downtrodden children #G2Great
A7: giving all kids opportunities, even if they can’t read the text, so we allow them to have it read and still do the thinking, do we encourage them and make them understand they will be able to read if they continue to practice... #g2great
#g2great Q5 I try to model how my being a writer drives my reading in so many ways. Because I write my reading is always, in part, a way to gather ideas for my writing. My reading is wide awake, because I am a member of the reading/ writing club h/t to Frank Smith
A6: The library is the epicenter & ♥️ of the classroom. Keep bulking it up with engaging, fun new titles that reflect a variety of interests. I wish my childhood classrooms reflected this literacy landscape. As a young reader, I was lost, I am glad I was found again! #G2GREAT
WHOA .... so many many literacy leaders in #g2great tonight! Please, please take a minute and follow each others as building your #PLN and learning from each other is so wonderful!
A7 Ensure, at the very least, that every classroom has an excellent, diverse, and accessible library that is organized & managed by Ss—and not by levels! If we believe students should spend most of reading time reading, then they need lots of books to choose from. #G2Great
All of our swap and shop time is done outside of workshop...it’s built into the morning routine...that way, there’s no interruption to independent reading time #G2Great
A7 I make sure my students have what they need, even if that means a snack, shoes, a pair of clean socks, to be listened to. There is more to helping a child receive an education than just academics and I try to look at all of those needs. #G2Great
A7 #g2great Our school partnered w/@Scholastic to offer each student 10 free books just before winter break. What an amazing gift to Ss and families. If Ss can't get to books, we need to get books to them.
A6 - I'm not a teacher but from personal experience, I'd read TV captions because I hated reading books. I'd mute the TV and just read the captions (I still had to read books too haha). #g2great
A7 Having worked in a Title I school for so many years, I have to say the number one way to achieve this is to truly believe every child can learn. Without that belief, there is no equity, there is no push to make sure they reach their full potential. #g2great
A7: Peolple everywhere want to help kids succeed. Use your own personal social network to showcase the workers in your room and don’t be afraid to look for sponsors - for things as simple as being a pen pal and giving authenticity to literacy. #g2great
A7 Our classrooms must reflect the children we have, not the children we were. Books, experiences, dialogue – all must honor who is sitting in front of us by our actions as evidenced by what we hold dear. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A5: I tell kids that what’s in the mind & heart of the writer jumps out to touch the minds & hearts of readers. That’s the magic of it all. Thinking & feeling new things. Or the same things in a different way #G2Great
A7 I’ve repeated this quote many times but I fully believe in it. We must ensure access to an education that is a mirror, a window, and a sliding door for our students. From the books we use to everything we do this must be true for our students #G2Great
A7 Ensure, at the very least, that every classroom has an excellent, diverse, and accessible library that is organized & managed by Ss—and not by levels! If we believe students should spend most of reading time reading, then they need lots of books to choose from. #G2Great
A7: I believe that Ss need to have a voice in there education. I try to provide them with what they need through listening to them. I encourage and support their reading life. All students have a voice and therefore a choice in my room. #g2great
A4: Validating their reading choices, & listening to the personal stories they want to share through writing. I open up dialogue in my classroom by sharing my own personal writing. I try to be as vulnerable by sharing my reading/writing life & sharing my shortcomings. #G2Great
A6: In my room we have our books categorized by ❤️ books and levels. The students can choose ❤️ books so they aren't always reading things that are their level. They love shopping for ❤️ books because they always find something they relate to! #kisdlit#g2great
A7: People everywhere want to help kids succeed. Use your own personal social network to showcase the workers in your room and don’t be afraid to look for sponsors - for things as simple as being a pen pal and giving authenticity to literacy. #g2great
#G2Great#kellerliteracy A8 Advocate for all Ss especially those who struggle, we are too quick to label and assign life sentences removing our most vulnerable Ss outside the classroom for intervention where much choice & voice is lost and we wonder why minimal progress is made
A8: 1 criteria-“Are we going to use data from the assessment to improve learning?” If no, why waste precious time/resources on ineffective assessment measures? Minimal test prep-format only-handful of days!
#litEssentials#G2Great@regieroutman@stenhousepub@pembrokepublish
We’ve undervalued the impact of conferring. Students value one-on-one time with their teacher. A 5 minute conference can make a world of difference in a reader. #G2Great
A7: To provide equity means to know the individuality of the learner. It means having high expectations for learners & high expectations for teaching those learners. As a coach, I desire to inspire T’s to become each child’s best teacher #g2great
A8. Using assessments that show me what the student knows, almost knows and what they don’t know yet. These assessments need to guide my planning and instruction to support the student to achieve. Running records are a must!#g2great
A4: “I am proud of you” and “I believe in you” and “You have come so far as a reader” often bring smiles - and renewed effort - on the faces of the most downtrodden children #G2Great
A8 Kidwatching! Rich assessment resides in the heat of precious learning moments if we’re willing to close our mouths and keep our eyes & ears open. My unquenchable curiosity @ kids is what drives me! #G2Great#LitEssentials
A8 Assessment is a huge equity issue. Too often we teachers are forced to prioritize what is most easily measured. For example, reading nonsense words for accuracy & speed remains a commonly mandated reading test despite being of questionable value. #G2Great
A7 By continuing to research and learn about reading disabilities and how to better serve my striving students. By advocating for them even when up against a wall. #G2Great
A4: “I am proud of you” and “I believe in you” and “You have come so far as a reader” often bring smiles - and renewed effort - on the faces of the most downtrodden children #G2Great
A5: I tell kids that what’s in the mind & heart of the writer jumps out to touch the minds & hearts of readers. That’s the magic of it all. Thinking & feeling new things. Or the same things in a different way #G2Great
A7 Leveled books is a huge and troubling issue @KarenECaine You’ve got it right. Ensure classroom libraries are not leveled, just like it is in the public library. Teach kids how to select books they can and want to read.
#G2Great#LitEssentials@stenhousepub
Conversations about what students are reading or might struggle with and a simple self assessment that I give them for their reading has been informative. Bonus no computer tests. #G2Great
I love his books! Thank you for exposing your kids to his work and reading aloud to them. I think we should be reading to kids at every grade level. It increases their reading interests, exposes them to new authors/genres, improves their vocabularies, and models fluency. #G2Great
A8: Being a responsible educator and assessing yourself. Making sure you are staying fresh and passionate so that your students are energized always. #g2great
A8 I try to ask myself how will this assessment change my teaching and impact student learning. If I don't have a clear answer, then it probably isn't worth my time or my students' time. #G2Great
A8: one of the best assessments I did with my readers was sitting next to them, have them read me a page and then tell me all about the book...I could work with them to then predict, infer, make connections, compare and contrast naturally #g2great
A6: Books are gifts! Christmas gifts to my Ss are bks! We hold new bks up 1 by 1 & cheer. When we are extra good or too talkative or a myriad of other reasons, we open our latest chapter bk. Bks are how we deal w/ life. (I rd Dahl's "Charlie & Choc Fac" 3x w/ cheers.) #G2great
Q8 Waiting for my copy of the book in the mail, so I haven't read @regieroutman's thoughts on this yet, but I have to say, taking to heart the phrase "Responsible Assessment" could push Ts in the right direction! #g2great
A8 Conferring conversations are high on my list. What better way to learn about readers and thinkers than celebrating the reading/thinking that happens while meaningfully engaged in the process? #G2Great#LitEssentials
A7: To provide equity means to know the individuality of the learner. It means having high expectations for learners & high expectations for teaching those learners. As a coach, I desire to inspire T’s to become each child’s best teacher #g2great
A8: whatever the assessment, make sure you and your students know its purpose and what can be learned from it. Give feedback: don’t reduce Ss to just a number or a score on a rubric. #G2Great
A8 - Assessment essential: ensuring that what we're measuring is worth knowing (readiness, leverage, endurance). Being willing to ask, "Why do we care that kids know this?" #g2great
A7 Make sure we use materials that reflect the cultures in our classes. Also, respond to students—we teach unique children and teachers need to continually learn to be responsive decision makers and build on what students can do. #G2Great
A8 Formative assessment must become our main assessment. That is, during everyday teaching, we use ongoing observation, conversations, students’ questions and responses, & more to adjust, improve, & enhance our moment-to-moment teaching so Ss learn more. #G2Great
A8: kidwatching, listening to them read not just RR, participating in their reading life within & outside of the classroom, monitoring their book selections to know who they are as a reader, discussing their current and past reads w/ them. #g2great
A4: “I am proud of you” and “I believe in you” and “You have come so far as a reader” often bring smiles - and renewed effort - on the faces of the most downtrodden children #G2Great
A8 Conferring conversations are high on my list. What better way to learn about readers and thinkers than celebrating the reading/thinking that happens while meaningfully engaged in the process? #G2Great#LitEssentials
#G2Great#kellerliteracy A8 assessment that does not result in informed instruction and a responsive reaction has no value & wastes precious time; we have to move past the collection of numbers and get back to the names & faces that represent those numbers
#g2great A8 A self-made Reading Interest-a-lyzer mash-up really helps to understand Ss as readers in first week of school. @JSerravallo's What Can I Work on as...a reader and as a writer are both invaluable. Kid-watching is the best deal out there!
A8 Assessment is reflection. We grow in reflection not judgement, so place value on the assessments that allow us to reflect on our teaching AND allow students to see their growth. #g2great
A8: It’s hard to know what embedded assessment looks like until you see it, but the best teachers make it a regular practice and not an event. #G2Great
A8: looking for trends in my conferrring notes is an enormous piece of formative assessment...I’m always amazed at what pops out...conferring naturally points me in the direction of what my Ss need next #G2Great
A9 Collective knowledge/wisdom of the group allows “true voices to be heard, raise hard questions, and risk failure.” Learn together w/ gr. level & vertical teams. Cohesive learning plan not random time.
#litEssentials#G2Great@regieroutman@stenhousepub@pembrokepublish
#g2great I have to do this as pre and post tests. I almost feel like crying. I end up apologizing to the kids and we just slug it out. The tests are meaningless to me personally and professionally.
A9 I love this distinction. PD tends to be what school do TO teachers while professional learning is how Ts can engage in meaningful personalized learning connected to their professional curiosities. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A9 “Random acts of professional development” is often the norm because there is always a new initiative and another demand. Professional learning means in-depth, long-term study, not moving too fast, & valuing deep knowledge in the area of focus. #G2Great
The whole purpose of assessment is to move our work with students in the right direction. Asking ourselves, "Does this assessment do that?" If not, DON'T waste precious classroom time! #G2Great Formative assessments are best--in the here and now, using what students are doing
A8 Formative assessment must become our main assessment. That is, during everyday teaching, we use ongoing observation, conversations, students’ questions and responses, & more to adjust, improve, & enhance our moment-to-moment teaching so Ss learn more. #G2Great
#G2GREAT A8- Listening to students read real books, take a running record to analyze, ask comprehension q through conversation. Reader and Writer Wksp time.
#G2Great#kellerliteracy assessment should provide multiple and varied lenses through which we learn about our S, both strengths and opportunities for improvement as well as room for their own reflection and voice as they learn about themselves; it should equip & empower T & S
Maybe by shifting responsibility of assessment results to students? Portfolio assessment a favorite of mine. Encourages shift in view to process, not just product. #g2great
A9. Move away from “sit and get”. Learning must be meaningful, focused on students, include support, collaborative, as well as include feedback. Hattie’s research indicates that teacher collective efficacy is one of the top on his list: https://t.co/fvEi7ukTDa
A8: Seeing assessments as tools that help me diagnose what each reader needs so that I can beat address those needs and help them to become better readers. #G2Great
A8 Responsible assessment essentials starts with consistent conversations with students. We need to provide formative feedback in the moment as often as possible. Also essential to keep anecdotal notes to track growth and be able to meet the next time with a purpose. #G2Great
#g2great I have to do this as pre and post tests. I almost feel like crying. I end up apologizing to the kids and we just slug it out. The tests are meaningless to me personally and professionally.
A9: I like the sound of professional learning because it is what we preach, keep learning all the time...and we can learn in so many different ways, I mean come on, look at this #g2great chat!
A8: While I don’t discount the need for formal assmnts, for me, the most powerful formative info is from 1-on-1 conferring. When I sit with a reader, we not only connect personally, but every strength and every gap becomes visible, awaiting thoughtful next steps. #g2great
Look @pranikoff So interesting right? Oh @regieroutman we wish this new book had been published just a month or so ago so we could use it as a required text. Perhaps you might be on a twitter chat with our @bankstreetedu class in the future? #G2Great
A7 Leveled books is a huge and troubling issue @KarenECaine You’ve got it right. Ensure classroom libraries are not leveled, just like it is in the public library. Teach kids how to select books they can and want to read.

A9: Peer visits, colleagues visiting their neighbors’ classrooms, is an under-utilized practice. Nothing like seeing literacy instruction in action. #g2great
A9: Round table discussions led by teachers who are passionate about a particular topic. Teacher leaders are invaluable when it comes to growth in an educator's life. #G2Great
A9 Professional learning requires an ongoing, schoolwide commitment led by a leadership team headed by the principal. Starting with developing shared literacy beliefs & common language is key. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A9 We must also shift our view from professional learning scheduled to what is inseparably interwoven in the very professional spirit of our schools so teacher learning can be inseparably intertwined w/students’. #G2Great#LitEssentials
A9 We must start to see ourselves as learners and come out of our comfort zones. Admin must provide a safe and trusting space for teachers to share and learn. Treat us like we treat our kids. #G2Great
A9: Honor the work teachers are already doing. Not trying to do everything new or different, but helping to constantly freshening up. Celebrate each other and showcase the internal talents and strengths in your building. #g2great
A8 I know exactly how you feel @ mrbgilson I’m right there with you. I am impressed with all the thoughtful and insightful responses from smart, dedicated educators. I will need a few hours to read through all these responses & LEARN!
#G2Great#LitEssentials@stenhousepub
A8 Responsible assessment essentials starts with consistent conversations with students. We need to provide formative feedback in the moment as often as possible. Also essential to keep anecdotal notes to track growth and be able to meet the next time with a purpose. #G2Great
A9: I love professional learning all the time, I do not always have the same feelings for PD. If I am not learning or interested I am not loving it. Funny how it is the same for Ss.
Absolutely. This is a just a small display. Wait until you see what we do in February. We bring in the card tables and fill our English foyer area with titles of all different types and text features. And we keep adding all through the month. It's really something. #g2great
A8 more and more I invite students to self-evaluate and when the work is in groups, debrief. Important for students to see their progress and know it’s ok to need support—more from themselves. Assessment ideally needs to come from student for them to to be independent. #g2great
A9: PD sometimes is seen as a “have to” on the school calendar. PL is a “want to” Ts engage in voluntarily. Just like with our Ss, we need to listen to each other and help increase the desire to *want* to learn. #G2Great
A9. #BookCampPD weekly chats are trying our best to offer ongoing discussions about current professional books each Saturday morning at 9:00 EST for educators to share and learn together - please join us! #g2great
A8: I find constant assessment really useful in informing my instruction and how I will go about meeting the needs of my individual students. I assess through conversation, casual note taking, and in more formative ways too. #g2great
A8: having a set of informative, research-based assessments...to use throughout the year...is another helpful way of highlighting growth & needs...I still depend on my Ss Lit portfolios for solid evidence of growth #G2Great
A9: love this idea. Development often denotes a negative vibe and often makes one feel it is one and done. Using the term 'learning' reiterates that it is a process, continuous. #g2great
A9. When PLCs are done right, you have ongoing, job-embedded professional learning because you are learning from your colleagues and being reflective about your practice. Reading Recovery has this type of professional learning built in. #G2Great
#g2great A9 Our school has had PLC's (communities) for last few yrs by grade level. It's a scheduled time to talk about kids - strengths & weaknesses.
It's all about the kids. We are also sharing ideas in monthly STEM and Humanities groups w/school wide initiatives. Good stuff.

A8:listening to and watching children read. Careful observation is the only way I truly know what my Ss can do and what they've yet to master. #g2great

A9: Just as it's important for our students as readers, I think choice is important for teachers when it comes to professional learnng. PD is often chosen for you and feels like an obligation or judgement. #G2Great
A9 Ts MUST take responsibility for their own learning. There is no excuse for any teacher not to read current professional books/articles & engage in social media in this day & age. This gift is ours for the taking! #G2Great#LitEssentials
Please join #G2Great next week as we welcome guest host Tom Newkirk to ponder Embarrassment and the impact it has on our practices (and student learning). Please join us friends! @Tom_Newkirk@heinemann
#G2Great#kellerliteracy A8 it should reflect authentic interaction with the text; I don’t remember the last time I sat down to read with a timer in my hand so why do we assess S in that way, what message does that send...we Do Reading vs Be a Reader🤔
#G2GREAT A-9 We provide professional learning opportunities without Ss, then in class coaching and support for the “deep dive” with students. Debrief. Reflection. Learning outcomes.
A8: I lrn from their answers to open-ended ?'s, narrative responses, written conversations & listening in on grp debriefings. When Ss words & drawings depict their understandings, so much content can be analyzed as well. If I don't understand s/t, I clarify w/ them. #G2great
